TO DINE FOR

The Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland has awarded The Tudor Pass at Great Fosters a coveted star. This is a tremendous achievement as The Tudor Pass only opened in September 2022, it’s highly unusual for the Michelin Guide to award a star so soon after opening, but it reflects head chef Alex Payne and his team’s talent, dedication and passion.

Born in Egham and raised less than a mile from the hotel, Alex joined Great Fosters last September to launch The Tudor Pass, an intimate, gastronomic restaurant with only seven tables and open Wednesday to Saturday for both lunch and dinner.

Alex and his team explain and serve many of the dishes directly to diners to bring some of the excitement and theatre of the pass into the restaurant giving a truly unique experience for guests.

Alex adds, “I’m thrilled for the whole team that Michelin has recognised our small restaurant and look forward to welcoming clients both old and new to The Tudor Pass in the coming months. It’s such an honour to be recognised in this way and this award will definitely spur us on to achieve even greater things.”

NEW LAUNCH

Coppa Club has launched The Townhouse Guildford, Surrey’s third location for the Coppa Club Group. The Guildford Townhouse has the same club-ethos as the other venues with all-day dining, co-working, drinking and socialising all under one roof. Located on Guildford’s bustling high street, in the iconic and locally loved Burton’s building, its set across three floors with a home away from home layout. Each floor of the townhouse has its own distinct palette and feel, created by award-winning interior designers, Run For The Hills. The interiors are stylish, laid-back and welcoming; a light, fresh and vibrant scheme on the ground floor, the brasserie has soft warm tones, and there are deeper, dynamic shades on the top floor. The interiors are designed to morph seamlessly throughout the day from light mornings to laid-back afternoons and from dusky evenings to atmospheric nights.

PRE-WEDDING TLC

If the wedding planning has taken its toll, as exciting as it is, it can be a little overwhelming, where you lose sight of who you are and why you’re getting married! Surrey celebrant Helen Noble and bridal coach Vicci Massey have created the ‘Healthy Wedding Success’ course to see you through the planning, the wedding and beyond – here’s to a happy marriage!

Helen adds, “You love them, but life and wedding planning is taking over, and you really want to go back to basics, feel the love again rather than the list, and be romantic for a moment rather than efficient! Well, I’m delighted to tell you that there's a solution. A place where you and your partner can come together outside of the hustle and bustle and the opinions of friends and family. A place where you reconnect about what marriage means to you both and to get all loved up again.”

BEE-AUTIFUL

Bee Friends is a small family-run honey bee farm in the Surrey Hills. If you’re considering a more organic and eco-friendly wedding, the company now offer small beeswax candles and honey pots for favors, or tall tapered beeswax candles for your ceremony or reception. All are handmade in small batches, the candles are non-toxic and don’t emit soot and its honey is raw, natural and delicious!

Pop over to www.beefriends.org.uk for more information.

Taking place in the County Club at the top of Guildford’s high street on a Saturday, it provides a safe space of excitement, romance, connection and marriage talk.

PHOENICE FIELDS, LEATHERHEAD

Fiesta Fields is an outdoor wedding and events company, representing a variety of beautiful outdoor venues dotted across Surrey and Sussex.

Phoenice Fields are set within the beautiful Trust Reserve of Norbury Park, which lies within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Located just outside Leatherhead, it offers the benefit of nearby accommodation and great transport links. The space combines idyllic, expansive views, with a feeling of total seclusion. It’s exceptionally peaceful and offers plenty of space for camping, guest parking, an outdoor blessing and tipi or marquee.

Access is via a rural track that quickly transports guests from town to countryside, and couples can take advantage of the long grasses and wildflowers in the field and the pretty woods just outside the tree-lined field for their photos.

Celebrant-led ceremonies can take place in whichever part of the field couples choose with a flower arch, ceremony tipi or similar providing a focal point, and guests can be seated on bales or chairs, depending on preference.

Receptions are held in the desired structure ie tipis/marquee, this is ‘blank canvas’ wedding in its purest sense! Fiesta Fields offers full flexibility for choice of suppliers so couples can piece together every element of their reception. A tipi or marquee is generally supplied with

matting, lighting, tables, chairs, dancefloor, with other finishing touches available, ready for couples to add flowers and décor. The team bring a wealth of event and project management experience, along with creativity, attention to detail and a knowledge of local suppliers; offering full or partial coordination or an essentials package that includes land hire, power, loos, security and on-the-day coordination. Cream canvas tipis are offered through Feista Field’s sister company Canvas & Light (https://canvasandlight.co.uk).

PAINSHILL, COBHAM

Designed in the 18th century as a living work of art, Painshill landscape garden is ideal for those couples looking for an outdoor venue. The garden boasts areas with beautiful flower beds and manicured lawns, the perfect location for from an elegant marquee or tipi-style covering. Around every corner is a romantic folly, beautiful temple or a stunning view. With more than 150 acres of woodlands, meadows, vineyard and lake to explore; couples tying the knot here will be provided with a golf buggy and driver to ensure you can take advantage of the amazing photography opportunities.

Ceremonies are held in the Gothic Temple with up to 75 loved ones, a beautiful white pavilion with stunning views over the lake. The open-sided Temple has a tree-lined aisle leading up to it and perfect arches to frame you while to exchange your vows. A marquee is provided for the comfort of your guests during the ceremony and for a drinks reception afterwards.

Receptions at Painshill can take place on the Amphitheatre, an oval lawn near the Temple, or in the Walled Garden ‒ an exclusive enclosed area on the banks of the River Mole. The spaces can hold different sizes and styles of marquee and, with views over the vineyard and lake, the Amphitheatre is a beautiful venue for a wedding breakfast. The Walled Garden has power facilities meaning it’s the perfect choice if you want to stay at Painshill all day and party into the night.

Painshill has featured in Married At First Sight and TV dramas such as Netflix’s Bridgerton and ITV’s Vanity Fair. Throughout the grounds there are distinctive and unique features; one of the most beautiful is the Grotto, a sparkling cave full of crystals that shimmer and shine with reflections from the lake.

MANOR HOUSE SCHOOL, BOOKHAM

Voted one of the UK’s most beautiful schools, Manor House School is situated on a seventeen-acre site in Surrey’s commuter belt. The photogenic 17th-century manor house sits amidst formal areas around a main front lawn with a natural wildlife area and an orchard. Couples have exclusive-use of its beautiful Grade II listed Queen Anne building and landscaped grounds for weddings or special occasions.

The venue’s sunlit south-facing function hall has windows both sides and a sprung ash floor for dancing. There’s a wow-factor entrance hall for your arrival drinks, Georgian fanlight doors that open out onto the pristine lawn and a magnificently grand staircase, and a warming log fire for cosy winter weddings.

Although you can’t tie the knot here, wedding breakfasts and receptions take place in Arcot Hall comfortably accommodating up to 100 guests and up to 50 additional evening guests. Larger parties are possible in marques or tipis during school holidays on the front lawn.

When hosting your wedding day here, couples can make the most of a quiet room upstairs and will also have access to the balcony for pictureperfect shots. There’s also access to a fully equipped commercial kitchen

BROOKLANDS MUSEUM

First opening its doors in 1907, Brooklands Museum has been through two World Wars, the Jet Age and beyond. It’s a place of great endeavour, achievements and has spawned many great pioneers, drivers, aviators and engineers. There are several impressive exhibits for couples and their guests to explore and get an insight into the venue’s wonderful history, with plenty of photograph opportunities, such as under the wings of the Concorde, the oldest remaining British motor racing track or next to remarkable motor racing vehicles. There’s also the opportunity to book a driving experience on part of the old track in an exhilarating vintage car.

All of the function spaces at Brooklands Museum are licensed for ceremonies, but the standout space is the Concorde, which is capable of holding 60 friends and family.

Alternatively, the Art Deco-style rooms which are flooded with natural light and offer views of either the Motoring Village, Original Finishing Straight or the Aircraft Park, are available.

The Vickers Suite can be used with space for 100 guests throughout the day, and The Bluebird Room can hold 80 loved ones for the ceremony and 100 for the evening celebration.

The largest space, The Napier Room, can accommodate 180 people for the service and 250 for the reception.

The museum holds one wedding a day, ensuring couples have the team’s undivided attention. They’ll also receive a complimentary menu tasting and concessionary rates at some of the local hotels.

BROOKLANDS HOTEL

01932 335 720 | www.brooklandshotelsurrey.com

Brooklands Hotel is an elegant, design-led, four-star property located in the heart of Surrey on the site of the iconic Brooklands race track. Predominantly glass, the hotel is the ultimate combination of contemporary design and vibrant history. Due to its location, the contour of the world’s most historic motor racing track runs through the hotel’s reception which features a sunning Charlie Whinney sculpture. Conceived as an integral part of the building, rather than a stand-alone piece, the sculpture is suspended in the lobby as a centrepiece. The course of the track is mapped out in plaster on the ceiling of the atrium and beneath hangs more than 100m of steam-bent oak which twists and leaps around the space, illustrating the route of the racing cars.

Within the perimeter and adjacent to the hotel is Mercedes-Benz World, a multi-purpose centre for one of the world’s most famous brands, offering driving experiences for adults and children alike.

Taking inspiration from its historic location, Brooklands Hotel has a 1920s Art Deco-inspired interior. The hotel features 131 bedrooms and suites, some of which are the largest of any UK hotel. Every bedroom boasts an abundance of natural light and many benefit from their own private outside space with panoramic views over the neighbouring track. TO THE

moon and back

Abi and Ben’s wedding day had the ultimate al fresco vibe Images courtesy of Kirsty Mackenzie Photography

Abi and Ben’s big day was on 2nd July, 2022, with Fiesta Field’s Spirit Lake, Dorking, setting the scene. Spirit Lake is a beautiful 30-acre space that includes manicured gardens, two lakes, a walled garden and surrounding woodland. “Our wedding day at Spirit Lake was absolutely perfect. The first decision we made while planning was to have an outdoor venue, so that we had total flexibility with vendors and other elements of the day,” shares Abi. “We loved that we were able to customise every aspect of the day and we are so grateful to all our vendors and family/ friends who worked to make it happen! It was also important to us to provide a range of easy accommodation options for our guests, so Spirit Lake was perfect with nearby hotels, on-site glamping and free camping!”

The wedding styling was both classic and modern, with white florals paired with accents of gold, pink and neon. Abi adds, “The ‘to the moon and back’ phrase set the theme for the day, as we often say it to each other, and have written it in many celebration cards over the years.” Here, we find out more about their day..

REAL WEDDINGS 31

Abi wore a gown from Made With Love, teamed with a veil and silver glitter Jimmy Choos! “I’d seen the dress on Instagram before we were even engaged, so when the proposal happened I knew that Made With Love would be a stop on the wedding dress hunt. In person, the dress was even more beautiful than online, covered in beaded vines that were perfectly suited to an outdoor wedding, with just the right amount of sparkle! I wasn’t expecting to wear a nontraditional dress but when I tried it on I knew immediately that it was the one”.

Canvas & Light provided three, giant hat, cream canvas tipis with a smaller nimbus tipi to offer a shaded chill-out area. Victoria Lily had set up a curve of bell tents around the main lake for guest accommodation. The ceremony was conducted by their dearest friend Marcus, who has known both Abi and Ben since they met. Readings were given by parents and a bespoke, dinosaur-inspired reading was given by their friend and flying trapeze instructor James. Abi and Ben had legally married a few days before at Leatherhead Registry Office. On their wedding celebration day, they had a lakeside-ceremony at Spirit Lake, followed by reception drinks in a walled garden. The six bridesmaids wore strapless blush pink dresses, ruched at the hip with a high leg split. They carried bouquets of white roses and dahlias. Abi’s bouquet had large white roses, mini orchids, dahlias and stocks. Ben and his groomsmen wore black two-piece suits from Moss Bros with black velvet bow ties. His sister, Pippa, was his best woman.
32

A beautiful ceremony arch had been covered in foliage, large white roses, orchids and dahlias by Zuzanna of Bloomantic.

A string quartet played as guests arrived via the woodland path.

The table names, seating plan and order of the day were super-stylish; white with letter-pressed gold foil from Ink & Paper London.

The tipis, which had been set up in a triangle formation, were decorated with white paper lanterns. The dancefloor and stage were in the back tipi, and dining stretched across the two front tipis, with space for the bar and indoor fireplace in one end.

Tables were named after the flying trapeze rigs around the world that Abi and Ben had flown together, with the top table ‘High Fly Trapeze’ their current and favourite training rig.

On the tables were gold beaded charger plates, gold cutlery, white napkins and white tapered candles.

Abi and Ben added so many personal touches to their day with the moon being a key theme incorporated in the cake, bespoke neon sign and large wooden crescent moon.

Ben surprised Abi with the large wooden moon they had on the day. She’d seen it online early in the wedding planning journey and fallen in love; unfortunately, their budget didn’t allow for it. Ben contacted The Little Wedding Warehouse and they were happy to work with Ben to keep it a secret, even going so far as to distract Abi on set-upday so the moon could be wheeled into place!

33 REAL WEDDINGS

Gastro provided a bespoke, delicious, fully vegetarian menu so that Abi and Ben could eat everything on their wedding day. Evening food was wood fired pizzas served from Gastro’s vintage horse trailer.

The bespoke neon signs, ‘Till death do us party’ and ‘To the moon and back’ came into their own in the lower light.

The evening finished with a silent disco and guests partied on until the early hours.

The band kept everyone dancing with a short break to capture beautiful sparkler images. In the evening, Abi changed into a tea-length dress and comfier dancing shoes. Their first dance was to Lucky by Jason Mraz. Two photo walls near the dancefloor captured the couple’s history and a table was set out with photos dedicated to those who sadly could not be part of the day. At the wedding breakfast Abi and Ben gave a joint speech, and there was a father-of-the-bride and best-woman speech from Ben’s sister Pippa.

Monochrome MAGIC

Lydia and Michael’s timeless wedding, was elegant with a black and white edge, lots of champagne and cocktails!

and Mike met while at work, Mike was the general manager of a gastro pub and Lydia worked there while at Uni. “We got talking and he eventually asked me out on a date,” shares Lydia. Although, their first date was a disaster where they ended up driving round the M25 for a few hours! “We spent that time getting to know each other and realised we had a lot in common and a similar sense of humour,” adds Lydia. “I was attracted to his beautiful smile, humour and the ability to always put a smile on my face, no matter what!

“We’ve now been together for 13 years and wouldn’t change it for the world, we are best friends and soul mates rolled into one.”

Mike proposed on 7th April 2021, on the day the couple picked up their puppy, Norman. “We’d got home and I’d gone upstairs to work (I was working from home during lockdown). Twenty minutes later Mike was calling me to come downstairs and he’d filled the lounge with flowers, candles and my favourite champagne and was on one knee with Norman next to him, asking me to be his wife! We spent the day celebrating and drinking then our family joined us in the evening. I was shocked and didn’t expect him to propose when he did but it will forever be one of my favourite days.”

The big day was set 2nd September 2022, with Bingham Riverhouse, Richmond setting the scene. Here, we find out more about their day…

PLANNED TO PERFECTION

When dating, Lydia and Mike would always go to Richmond for dinner and drinks and always said they would marry there. “It was actually the only area we considered when looking at venues, it has a very special place in our hearts,” shares Lydia.

Wanting a black-tie wedding with champagne and cocktails, Bingham Riverhouse was everything the couple imagined it would be and knew from the moment they saw it, it was the one. “We wanted it to feel more like an event than a wedding,” shares Lydia. “The reception room and gardens are stunning, and the interior matched our vibe exactly. The inside of the venue is pale green with lots of gold accents and has an Art Deco feel to it. It has the most beautiful reception bar, decorated with extravagant floral arrangements, for guests to get a drink before the ceremony, and it boasted an extensive cocktail list!”

The venue has stunning grounds offering al fresco nuptials, which the pair had set their hearts on, and luckily for them the weather was dry and they were able to host their ceremony outside.

For the finer details of the day, the couple’s table plan was a black and white design fitting to the ‘modern and elegant’ design brief. The flowers even reflected the theme, a mix of roses and orchids in neutral tones in a black vase. “Our florist designed our table centrepieces and they were perfect. We wanted floral displays which would stand out, not take up too much space and have a contemporary, timeless aesthetic,” shares Lydia.

LOOKING THE PART

Knowing years before tying the knot that she wanted a crepe-style material, tight-fitting dress from Made with Love it was a simple dress shopping experience for Lydia. “I wore a dress called Rosey by Made with Love. I saw Made with Love on Instagram a few years back and knew it would be one of their dresses. I made an appointment with the London shop and it did not take me long to decide and I managed to buy the sample dress meaning I took it home the same day!”

Day to day, Lydia loves wearing headbands so made sure she wore one on her wedding day. “I choose a pearl headband, from Six Stories, which I paired with a plain cathedral-length veil also from Made with Love,” shares Lydia. Wanting the dress to speak for itself, Lydia felt little jewellery was required and simply opted for her mum’s gold and pearl drop earrings and a couple of her sister’s bracelets.

The groom wore a black custom tuxedo from Suit Supply which had satin

details and a pale blue/silver lining to the suit and back of the waistcoat. His shoes were patent black evening shoes with gold accents from ASOS, and he completed his big-day look with gold and black cufflinks.

The best man wore a complementing suit from Moss, while Lydia’s sister and bridesmaid wore a stunning gold/champagne maxi evening dress.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

To entertain guests, Lydia and Mike booked a singer for the drinks reception who also played the guitar. “We saw him at a friend’s wedding the year before and loved him so much we booked him there and then. All the guest enjoyed this and it created much more of a party atmosphere for the day,” recalls Lydia. “After the evening meal, we arranged a cocktail hour on the terrace. As an insight to our relationship, we decided to serve three cocktails that meant something to both of us: Mike chose a negroni, I a picante and we both enjoy espresso martinis.”

After their much-loved cocktail hour, a DJ and sax player entertained guests with a half-hour garage set and then a house/Ibiza set. “The guests loved it and everyone was on the dancefloor,” shares Lydia. “We also provided a glitter/face gem table to encourage people to decorate their faces as if hitting the clubs in Ibiza. The photos of this are epic!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“It was the most amazing day of our lives, it was incredible from start to finish and felt like a dream,” recalls Lydia. “Everyone said it would go by so quickly but until you are in it you can’t quite understand what people mean. We remember smiling all day and just feeling like the luckiest people in the world. I was incredibly relaxed and excited whilst getting ready but I understand Mike was extremely nervous mainly because he would be greeting all the guests and the one who would be doing the speech.”

After the ceremony, the newlyweds had time on their own for photos and decided to have a number taken in the upstairs bar. “We each ordered a cocktail and just sat and had a conversation,” remembers Lydia. “It felt like such a special moment for us, having only just got married, to take some time to be alone. We have some stunning photos of this moment which we will cherish forever and have made an agreement to go to the venue for a drink every time we are in the area.”

The couple’s incredible photographer also specialises in champagne spray photos which the couple were excited to try. “The photo is stunning, and the champagne spray looks like something from a movie! For the rest of our lives, on our anniversary, we are going to get a bottle of champagne and recreate this photo, we want to make an album of these photos to give to our future children.”

Finally, another standout moment for the happy pair was a sparkler shot they were able to capture in the evening. “Before the photographer left, we really wanted a photo of a few people holding sparklers around us. We didn’t expect it but almost all the guests got involved and we have epic photos and videos of us walking down an aisle of our guest holding sparklers whilst we are holding flares.”

FUN AND GAMES

“It’s a tradition in our families to ask all of the guests to bet on how long they think the speeches will take. My uncle decided to take this very seriously and went round to everyone with his clip

REAL WEDDINGS 39

board and change box to get them to bet. Our best friend won the bet and all the money and the sheer excitement on everyone’s faces was amazing.

“The speeches were perfect and everything we wanted. It’s always a worry they are going to be rubbish and paint people in a bad light, but they were all amazing, we were touched by the words of the best man and my dad.

“We also asked a very close friend to sing our first dance song: I Will Wait by Mumford & Sons. It meant so much to us that he was able to do this on the day, he’s a very talented singer and it’s something we can cherish forever.”

WISE WORDS…

“We made a pact when we began planning the wedding to not get obsessed with the detail and it was the best thing we could have done. We agreed to tell suppliers what we were thinking and imagining for the day but to let them run with it and come up with something amazing. They are the ones with the knowledge and talent in their field and people need to trust them. We did our research on who to book and made sure their Instagram pages reflected our style but other than that, we put our faith in them and couldn’t be happier we did. It can be such a stressful time, but couples just need to relax and remember why they are doing it. No one on the day will know if something goes wrong as no one other than the couple know what is meant to happen.” – Lydia

Lisa and Allan met in modern fashion on a dating app over Christmas 2019 but didn’t meet in person until February 2020; it turned out that Allan was only in the UK to see family at Christmas and was actually living in Dubai! “He came back to the UK on a business trip in February, and we met up for a drink and then another couple of dates during the week he was here,” recalls Lisa. “It was all a bit of a whirlwind, but we knew straight away that we really liked each other and who was going to let the matter of a couple of thousand miles come between us!”

After Lisa then visited Allan in Dubai, both the UK and the UAE were going into lockdown due to the pandemic, she didn’t know when they might see each other again. “Allan had always wanted to move back to the UK and that plan was brought forward in the April when he was made redundant and decided it was time to put that plan into action,” adds Lisa. “In June 2020 he arrived back, with all his worldly possessions from living overseas for nearly 30 years following behind in a shipping container! It seems a bit mad after only spending 10 actual days together, but we were suddenly living together during lockdown in the UK! Luckily for us our instinct about each other was spot on and our relationship continued to go from strength to strength.”

After the whirlwind start to their relationship, Allan’s proposal was just as exciting which took place in Koh Samui, Thailand on Valentine’s Day 2022. “We’d gone out for a holiday but also to check on a condo he owned on the island that, for obvious reasons, he hadn’t been able to travel to and check on during lockdown. It was very romantic, being served dinner on the beachfront but the proposal was a complete surprise. We both knew we wanted to be together and that it would lead to marriage eventually, but I was surprised when he suddenly produced a ring and asked me to marry him. I had no hesitation in saying yes!”

The big date was set, 10th September 2022, with Leatherhead Registry Office and The Station pub Nutfield, Surrey setting the scene.

Top planning tip: Concentrate on the overall look and feel you want to achieve and build around that. We decided to focus a large chunk of our budget on a free bar, yes it meant we had to be inventive in other areas, but we really wanted to create a party atmosphere and a free-flowing bar was one of our requirements for this!

PLANNING THE DAY

Having both been married before, both Lisa and Allan wanted a small wedding with their respective families and then a party for friends in the evening. “It was important to us that it was relaxed and informal, with a party/celebratory feel to the whole day,” shares Lisa. “Leatherhead Registry Office has lovely grounds for photos; I had been to a 40th birthday party at The Station pub in the past and had a brilliant time, so it seemed an obvious choice after talking to Jeanette the pub manager, who had some great ideas and suggestions.” The happy couple and 14 loved ones dined at the pub in a little side room, called The Waiting Room. “It turned out to be a beautiful September day so we had drinks on the outside terrace before eating,” recalls Lisa. “After the meal, the DJ arrived to set up in the main bar area and we had 60 guests turn up to dance and drink the night away with us. The Station served a delicious Asian-inspired menu, starting off with sharing platters of chicken wings, spring rolls, pork dumplings and barbecue ribs. We then had fish and chips or gourmet burgers, followed by chocolate brownies with ice cream or sticky toffee pudding! In the evening there was a selection of pizzas from their wood fired pizza oven for guests as well as slices of wedding cake.”

THE FINDER DETAILS

Lisa and Allan’s intimate wedding breakfast was hosted around a horseshoe-shaped table; the tables had old apple crates personalised with their names and the wedding date, they were filled with flowers to match the bouquets in a very relaxed, country-style arrangement of pink and cream roses with eucalyptus leaves. “Greensleeves Florist in Redhill, Surrey, provided bouquets for the bridesmaids and I, the groom and best man’s buttonholes, centrepiece flower arrangements and flowers for the cake,” shares Lisa. A home baker in Redhill, Hannah’s Cakes and Treats, provide the big-day cake. “I’d seen cakes she had made online, and she came highly recommended. I wanted a two-tier naked sponge cake with a strawberry and cream filling decorated with wedding flowers.”

For their place name settings, guests found their seat with a card featuring a eucalyptus leaf design which Lisa, after practising some basic calligraphy, had written each guest’s name on, “There were a few dud attempts, but I was able to write my own place cards!” adds Lisa. “The venue has a lovely vintage shabby-chic look, we felt we didn’t need to add any additional décor. Our romantic flowers, cake and centrepieces were perfect for the type of low-key wedding we wanted to have.”

When Allan came back from Dubai he also shipped back his large Jeep, that he used over the desert dunes, so the couple used this as their wedding car with some cream ribbons added. “My friend’s partner is a London Cab Driver, so a Black Cab with wedding ribbons was our other car. Vinnie our French Bulldog loved travelling in the cab with the grownup kids who were all involved in the wedding!” shares Lisa.

BIG-DAY ATTIRE

“I wanted a dress appropriate for a registry office wedding and being an older bride, but also something that was romantic and suited my personal style,” shares Lisa. “I tried loads on! But finally settled on a vintage-style lace design with a button-up back. I accessorised with high strappy heels and a headband of dried hydrangea petals.”

Allan and the groomsmen wore dark navy suits with pale pink ties and buttonholes, while the bridesmaids, Lisa’s daughter Lulu, Allan’s daughter Lizzie and his granddaughter Kylah wore dresses of their own choosing in either navy, pale pink or sage. “As it turns out, they each chose one of the three colours I’d suggested,” adds Lisa. “Kylah, who’s not a fan of dresses, chose a jumpsuit. Their matching bouquets pulled everything together and I felt that informal look and feel complemented the overall theme and our approach to the whole day.”

ON THE DAY DELIGHTS

The day passed in a whirlwind for the happy pair, “All I can remember is my cheeks aching from smiling so much,” shares Lisa. “We were both on

45 REAL WEDDINGS

an absolute high all day long. I think we were both nervous in the morning but once we saw each other that all melted away.”

For Allan, his standout moment of the day was seeing Lisa for the first time coming down the aisle. “He said it took his breath away,” adds Lisa. “For both of us, saying our vows was very meaningful and emotional especially in front of our families who all get on brilliantly, there was a lot of love in the room. Everyone was on brilliant form, the drinks were flowing and we had a fabulous time with everyone in the evening too!”

“Not funny at the time, but we were due to leave to go to the registry office at 2pm, and I received a text at 12 noon from our DJ to say he wasn’t well and had tested positive for Covid! Cue some very frantic ringing around to find a replacement,” recalls Lisa. “I was sitting on my bed, with my daughter, doing our wedding make-up while simultaneously calling DJs left, right and centre. Thankfully we managed to secure a replacement who went above and beyond to help us out and who proved a great hit on the night!”

Continuing the festivities, the newlyweds and all of their children and their partners, who were staying over, all went for a celebratory breakfast the next morning. Feeling a bit worse for wear, Allan decided ‘hair of the dog’ was the answer and ordered a glass of sauvignon blanc with his fried breakfast! Needless to say he turned green after a few sips!” laughs Lisa.

WE ARE FAMILY

It was a true family affair; Allan’s son Robert was his best man, and Lisa’s son Jack walked her down the aisle with their French Bulldog, Vinnie, in his new cream bow tie and lead. “My bridesmaids were my daughter, Allan’s daughter and his granddaughter, and our witnesses were my brother and Allan’s oldest daughter Shana. Having them all involved made the day so special and having both our mums there too was amazing. Getting lastminute permission for Vinnie to accompany me down the aisle made the day, he was very well behaved and was picked up from the venue by his dog walker before we sat down to eat our wedding breakfast.”

Pretty in pastels

Reimagining these popular hues, this local collaboration is modern, stylish and oh-so dreamy

49 LOCAL INSPIRATION

Photographer and coordinator of this stunning shoot, Pippa, of Surreybased Pippa Volans Photography, wanted pastel and ombre tones to be the heart and soul of this editorial. “I’ve rarely seen it in the styled shoot world, but I wanted something different for my portfolio,” shares Pippa. “I also really wanted to shoot with new models; Charlotte and Dexter are expecting – Charlotte’s five-months pregnant and looked absolutely stunning in Sassi Holford and Ellis; Jade and Jake – who’s partially deaf and wears a hearing aid – I’ve been friends with for years and Jade looked an absolute vision firstly wearing Jenny Packham and then Sassi Holford; Jane and Matthew – these guys are professionals bringing their expertise to the shoot – Jane is an absolute goddess, firstly wearing Jenny Packham and finishing off in Suzanne Neville.”

It was a true friendship group supporting each other on the day, Pippa is friends with both the hair and make-up artist Emma Louise from Emma Louise Bridal and Holly Louise from HL London respectively. The florist Jamie-Ri, another dear friend of Pippa’s, were childhood buddies, “We were in high school together and it’s been lovely bringing our visions to life, she is amazingly talented and I adore her and am so proud of the collaborations we have worked on together.”

Additionally, Pippa could only sing the praises of the other suppliers she’s worked with, “Bella’s cakes from Bella and Bean are insane and she nailed the brief! While Frankie from Ink & Pixel created absolutely gorgeous stationery. Becca from @1940bridal is also a very good friend, she’s so talented and her hair pieces and accessories are unmatched. Rebecca Anne Designs supplied the showstopping veils they are absolutely, bloomin’ stunning, works of art!”

Janel from Grant’d Beauty was also there to add the finishing touches to the looks, creating one-of-a-kind nails for all the ladies! “Janel is a very young ambitious queen who, since meeting me, has worked at London Fashion Week!”

Stephen Bishop Suiting provided the grooms’ attire for the day, Pippa adds, “Steve is such a delight, an absolute gentleman and his customer service is en pointe. The dresses were all kindly lent to us from The Dress in Teddington. Bri from Parea Photography captured the behind-thescenes of this wonderful day and she definitely needs a mention as she did so pregnant – what a trooper! Finally, Cynthia Hoyi is from Bristol, due to unforeseen circumstances was unable to attend in person but she sent us videos and all the tableware in order to get it set up as she’d imagined. I had a lot of compliments about the tablescape!” – Enjoy!

HAND-PICKED bunch

Meet talented local florists to help plan your big day

NICOLA WRIGHT, OWNER THE WRIGHT CHOICE

How long have you been a wedding florist, when did your passion begin?

I’ve been a florist for more than 25 years and I’ve wanted to be one for as long as I can remember! I found an old primary school book a few years back showing my drawings of a flower shop with me behind the counter. The statement read ‘Nicola aged nearly 9, I want to be a florist’.

I started to work as a Saturday girl in a beautiful flower shop from the age of 14. I became a junior when I left school and worked my way up to management over the years. I was very fortunate to have worked for an incredibly talented florist and businesswoman. Their creativity, passion and skills inspired me to be the florist I am today. They pushed floristry to another level, and I never stopped learning from them. They encouraged me to attend college, to learn about the trade both behind the scenes and front of house and helped me get my qualifications. I was pushed out of my comfort zone, encouraged to think outside the box and inspired to do incredible things with the amazing team I lead. With my own passion, creativity and determination, these two ladies inspired me to achieve my goals and some of my most memorable, proudest moments were thanks to them. I’m thankful for what I’ve been taught over the years and never stop learning. There’s always something new to learn and the ways in which things are done never stop changing. I grow and evolve with every creation and am even more passionate now than when I started. I absolutely love what I do and with my holistic approach I know my creations bring so much joy not only to me but to others as well ‒ I couldn’t imagine my life without flowers.

What’s your favourite floral element of the wedding day to create?

I’d have to say the table arrangements. Whilst I absolutely love bridal party flowers and all the beauty of the bouquets/buttonholes I feel that everything flows from the tables. They are the first thing you see when you walk into the venue and give the most impact on the day.

I feel that flowers add value to your event; and really notice when corners are cut or attention to detail is missed. This doesn’t mean you have to overstretch your budget but focus on doing what you can well. I love the look on people’s faces when they walk in to see how beautiful it all looks.

The displays are a great icebreaker, a talking point for your guests, especially for those who may be socially awkward, struggle to make conversation or simply just don’t know anyone on the table. No need for an awkward silence or eye contact when you can avert your attention to the flowers – for me they do more than just sit there

looking pretty. I love them because they enhance the day, make people feel good, you can add personal touches and meaningful blooms, plus you can give them to special guests to enjoy after the wedding!

How can couples ensure their choices are sustainable during a time when everyone is conscious of their green credentials: For anyone trying to be more sustainable with their choices perhaps look to hire your glassware/accessories as they are always being re-used –less for you to have to personally store and transport too. Perhaps look at pre-loved items in charity shops and online. Not only saving you a pretty penny but pre-loved is re-loved. Choosing items you can re-use or gift after ensures its life doesn’t just have to end at the end of the night. Speak to your suppliers about contacts they may know too as we are a network of experience and knowledge.

I know it’s hard to choose, but do you have a favourite flower?   There are so many beautiful varieties to work with. I love each season for what it brings. Daffodils are what I buy for myself as they make me feel happy and a reminder that spring is on its way. I’m in my element when I get to work with different textures and colours and feel this is really when I get to work my magic. Scented flowers, fragrant foliage and plants have the power to improve our mood, reduce stress and help ease anxiety helping you feel calmer and more relaxed. Just one more reason to love what I do. Never underestimate the power of flowers!

ANNABEL GRANGE, OWNER BUTTERFLIES & BOWS

How long have you been a wedding florist, when did your passion begin?

I started Butterflies & Bows in 2004, I’ve always loved flowers and was a keen gardener from a young age and my passion grew very quickly from about eight-years-old!

What’s your favourite floral element of the wedding day to create?

I love unusual or wilder-looking bridal bouquets, I let my imagination run with it. I also enjoy making pedestal arrangements as they are so beautiful, such a wide range of flowers and textures can be used.

JAYNE AND ROZANNA, OWNERS BIRD EVENTS

How long have you been a wedding florist, when did your passion begin?

Bird Events is a family run mother-daughter business. Jayne has been a florist for more than 30 years, so Rozanna grew up surrounded Jayne’s floral creations and the passion was instilled at an early age! Fast forward a few years and we had both been in the wedding industry working independently but always knew we would have our own business together one day. We opened our doors in 2019 and never looked back.

What’s your favourite floral element of the wedding day to create?

Bridal bouquets are our favourite to make as they’re so personal to each of our brides. We create a bespoke bouquet design for each bride, made to complement their wedding dress and reflect the personality of their wedding day. A very close second favourite is our floral arches as we can let our creativity run wild and create something truly showstopping!

How can couples ensure their choices are sustainable during a time when everyone is conscious of their green credentials: Talk to your florist about their green credentials to ensure your values align with theirs. At Bird Events we work with as many reusable and recyclable elements as possible and are always finding new ways to create designs without the use of floral foam. Behind the scenes, we work with suppliers who share our values and aim to work locally to reduce our transport footprint.

Make the most of your flowers by thinking about what happens to them

How can couples ensure their choices are sustainable during a time when everyone is conscious of their green credentials: Try to choose flowers that are in season in Europe the week of your wedding so that we don’t have to ship them in from far-reaching countries such as South America or South Africa. Fresh flowers can all be composted after your wedding. Think carefully about using artificial flowers as most are made in China and shipped over and 99% use plastics and materials that are not recyclable.

I know it’s hard to choose, but do you have a favourite flower? I love dahlias which come in some stunning colours and have a longer season.

Butterflies & Bows, Lingfield, Surrey 01342 892 392 | www.butterfliesandbows.co.uk

https://davidbostockphotography.co.uk

at the end of your wedding. Our favourite thing to do is turn them into thank you gifts for your guests to take home at the end of the evening, giving them a second lease of life.

Consider incorporating plants into your displays, which can either be used again by us, or you can take them home to enjoy in your garden.

I know it’s hard to choose, but do you have a favourite flower? Roses are timeless for weddings and are available in many varieties and colours. We love blending different varieties together, especially in bridal bouquets. Our current favourites are garden rose varieties as the scent is so beautiful at this time of year. Peonies are always a firm favourite for us and our couples too!

SHANNON KENYON, ASSISTANT WEDDING SUPERVISOR LONGACRES GARDEN CENTRE

FLOWERS

How long have you been a wedding florist, when did your passion begin?

I’ve worked as a wedding florist for the past five years, but prior to that, I was employed with a fresh cut flower buyer. My typical day would begin early in the morning, where I would unload trolleys of flowers straight from Holland and fulfil customer orders. It was during this time that my love for flowers grew and my passion began. I was captivated by the variety of blooms and marvelled at how the skilled florists would turn them into beautiful wedding arrangements. This inspired me to learn floral design and pursue a career in this field.

What’s your favourite floral element of the wedding day to create?

I love creating larger installations such as floral walls, staircase arrangements, archways, and suspended arrangements. These pieces usually serve as the focal point of the wedding ceremony or reception, the mechanics behind it and the process of crafting them with a variety of flowers and foliage is a fulfilling challenge.

How can couples ensure their choices are sustainable during a time when everyone is conscious of their green credentials: Couples can choose to use compostable or reusable floral arrangements instead of using floral foam, which is not biodegradable and can harm marine life. There are many different alternatives to floral foam such as chicken wire, moss and reusable floral netting.

It’s hard to choose, but do you have a favourite flower? My favourite flower is a hydrangea, but sweet peas are a close second!

Longacres Garden Centre, Bagshot, Surrey  01276 486 428 | www.longacres.co.uk

POPPY EMUSS, OWNER POPPY WILD FLORAL

How long have you been a wedding florist, when did your passion begin?

I enjoyed playing with flowers from a young age, my parents had a beautiful garden providing me lots of material to practice with. I officially began training in 2018 while living in Australia.

I started with basic evening classes followed by a wedding flowers course which I completed alongside learning ‘on the job’ at a large retail and event florist. On my return to the UK in 2019 I attended Tallulah Rose Flower School in Bath, before setting up my business Poppy Wild. My business has always been mainly focussed on wedding and event flowers.

What’s your favourite floral element of the wedding day to create?  I love making large-scale doorway installations as I’m able to get really creative with them, each piece of work is completely unique, the seasons change as do the doorways at different venues. I also love creating large freestanding arrangements such as urns and floor meadows.

How can couples ensure their choices are sustainable during a time when everyone is conscious of their green credentials: Arrangements that sit directly in water mostly eliminate the need for floral foam, I’m able to use chicken wire to anchor stems in vases and large urns and I aim to replace floral foam with moss which retains moisture in a similar way and can be reused multiple times. I can also help my couples choose elements that can be relocated throughout the day which also saves financially!

I know it’s hard to choose, but do you have a favourite flower?  It’s impossible to choose, but I will always love Chocolate Cosmos, the bounciest, dark red flower which actually does smell of chocolate.

Q&A Beauty

Considering a spray tan for your wedding day? Here’s some myth-busting advice

Reigate’s Sonja Bowden, of Blush Effect by Sonja has some stellar advice for those considering a fake tan before their wedding day. “We have all heard the jokes about being an oompa loompa or Ross from Friends when it comes to a spray tan, so I understand your concerns about getting one for your wedding day,” shares Sonja. “Do you want to hear the questions I get asked on a regular basis? Let’s dive in…

Will it come off on my dress? Normal tan would leave a transfer mark on your lovely and expensive dress. This is because it has a guard colour which makes it easier for spray tan artists like myself to see where the tan is going and make sure we don’t miss an area. However you can use a specialist clear spray tan, which I do, which will look like you’ve been sprayed with water and look no different until it’s developed. It’s the tan guard colour that can rub off on your dress, especially as wedding dresses tend to be very fitted and can rub on the skin.

Will I be orange? Not a chance! Spray tan solution has come a long way in recent years. I’ve worked with Nouvatan for three years and I get the most amazing feedback from my clients about how natural it looks on their skin. With Nouvatan, orange spray tans don’t exist, its unique formula is specifically formulated to counteract orange tones.

Will it be streaky? The solution is sprayed directly onto your skin in a fine mist so it goes on evenly. However, you want your skin to be in great shape before your spray tan as it gives a brilliant finish and prolongs the life of your tan. My advice is to exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! It really is so important to start this twice a week for two weeks before your tan.

Will it last for my honeymoon? This depends how long after the wedding your honeymoon is. If it’s a day or so after the wedding, if you have followed your skincare preparation, your tan lasts 7 to 10 days so it will still be looking good for the start of your honeymoon.

I don’t want you to see me undressed! Not a question but I get this a lot. I can promise you that as soon as we start having the consultation and you’re telling me all about your wedding and how you got engaged, you will completely forget that you are about to get down to your underwear. I will make you feel comfortable, and we will have a good laugh. I completely understand how nerve-racking it can be to get down to your undies. I have had to do this myself when I trained in tanning and when I had my advance training, and as someone who’s also not very body confident, I was so anxious. You do not need to apologise for: body fat, cellulite, wrinkles, veins, scars, your bum size, your tummy, big/small or no boobs, or anything else that has to do with being a woman!

YOU LOOK Made

Our local experts have some stellar advice for pre-wedding preparation and on the day itself

TRIAL AND ERROR

Linda Leonard says: In the run up to your wedding, cleanse your skin every day and use a mild face pack or treatment weekly, but not the day before the wedding! Don’t get any strong cleansing treatments in the month prior to the wedding, just to be on the safe side in case you have a reaction to the products.

If you’re doing your own make-up, practise beforehand with the exact products you will use on the day to be sure you’re happy with how you will look. My advice is use a professional, and have a trial run a few months before the wedding. You don’t want all that stress on the morning of the big day. There are many artists to choose from check their portfolio, have the trial and get to know them before the day so you feel comfortable and confident that they’lll make you look your absolute best!

LESS IS MORE

As for hair, make sure your hair is cut about two months prior to the wedding and discuss with your stylist what’s going to happen such as are you going to have high/lowlights for the wedding? If so, do that one week prior. Again, you should have a trial run to work out how you want the hair on the day. Brides think they need long hair for occasion hair ‒ that’s a myth ‒ shoulder-length is perfect for both up dos and down styles.

BRIDAL SPRAY TAN

Sonja Bowden says: You want your skin to be in great shape before your spray tan as it gives a brilliant finish and prolongs the life of your tan, so exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! It’s so important to start this twice a week, two weeks before your tan:

•Be very gentle

•Get your partner to do your back for you

•Use a mitt rather than scrub as these can leave a residue

•Pay extra attention on knees, elbows and heels

Use an oil-free body and facial SPF every day in the run up to the wedding. There are a few reasons for this:

•Sunburn can affect your spray tan even weeks after it has healed

•Prevents tan lines forming ‒ a spray tan can help disguise tan lines but it will not hide them completely

Emily Watkins says: Let the sparkle speak for itself and opt for some simple diamond studs and a pendant to keep it dainty. The wedding rings don’t have to match, they should reflect your personal style not your partners!

F.Hinds, www.fhinds.co.uk

•It’s also a good idea to think about what neckline you’re wearing Wash off your tan eight-hours after application. The best thing you can do to make sure your tan lasts longer and fades evenly is to moisturise twice a day with an oil-free moisturiser. This will ensure your tan lasts long into your honeymoon.

TOP TIPS

Amy Lacey says: Leading up to the wedding, always have a trial and try and arrange it for the same day you’re having a dress fitting so you can see the complete look. Look after your skin and have a facial or two leading up to the day. Finally, treat your hair to a nice deep-conditioning mask a couple of times in the month before the wedding too.

THE SKIN HAS IT

Sonja Bowden says: The best skincare advice in the run up to the big day would be to not change your skincare routine in the month before the wedding. If you want to improve your skincare, start no less than six months before the wedding. This will ensure you don’t react to a new product or have a skin purge. Other things you can do to help your skin are:

•Double cleanse in the evening! Your first cleanse will remove the make-up, SPF and dirt from the day, your second cleanse will clean deeper into your pores removing bacteria, sweat and dead skin cells

•Get enough sleep

•Look after your gut health, beauty really does start from within

•Drink plenty of water, it helps your skin and your spray tan  Blush Effect by Sonja

www.blusheffect.co.uk

Rob & Jason say: As a groom, you want to look your best on your big day, here are some tips for styling ahead of your wedding:

•Dress for the occasion: Make sure your outfit is appropriate for the wedding’s dress code and venue. If it’s a formal wedding, wear a tuxedo or a dark suit. For a more casual wedding, you can wear a lighter-coloured suit or even a single-breasted jacket and chinos. Research looks that you will feel comfortable in if formalwear isn’t your normal style.

•Plan for the season: Think about the time of year you’re getting married. Choose a colour and style that complements your skin tone and body shape. Think about who else will be your groomsmen and make sure they are complemented by your choice of outfit. Choose a best man or woman who will support you on visits to choose outfits and accessories.

•Get the right fit: The fit of your suit or tuxedo is essential. Make sure it fits well and doesn’t look too baggy or too tight. You may need to have it tailored to get the perfect fit. We work closely with Dapper who offer formalwear for men to hire or to buy.

•Accessorise with care: Accessories can elevate your outfit and add some personality. Consider wearing a pocket square, cufflinks, a tie bar, and a watch. Make sure they all match and complement each other. Here at Dapper & Suave we have everything from a conversation starter print to statement prints in a range of neck ties, cravats, pocket squares, bow ties and more.

•Dress as a team: We would encourage you to pick colours from your bridal party to pull the whole look together or a print that joins up the groomsmen. It’s also important to put the right people in the right accessories. We often see the father-ofthe-bride in a tie, whereas a pageboy will look great in one of our bow ties or even a cravat.

•Keep it simple: Don’t overdo it with accessories or flashy patterns. Keep it simple and classic, so your outfit doesn’t distract from the bride.

•Invest in good shoes: Your shoes will be a crucial part of your outfit, and you’ll be on your feet for most of the day. Invest in a good pair of dress shoes that are comfortable and stylish or a good quality smart trainer if you have a more relaxed vibe on the day.

Remember, the most important thing is to feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles and colours to find what works for you.

HEAD TO TOE

Amy Lacey says: Keep hydrated, drink plenty of water whilst getting ready. Use a setting spray for make-up, especially in the summer. Don’t wash your hair the morning of the wedding (unless you’re having a big bouncy volume blow dry!) dayold hair is best for styling and setting.

Amy Lacey Bridal Hair & Makeup www.amylacey.co.uk

GROOMED TO PERFECTION

TEARS OF JOY

Sonja Bowden: Ask your make-up artist what lipstick they’ll use, and buy one for yourself. Ask one of your bridesmaids to hold on to a small bag and include some blotting paper and perfume so you can top up later in the day. Weddings are of course very emotional, from walking down the aisle to listening to the speeches; when those tears do come, remember to dab your tears away with a tissue rather than rubbing to help your make-up stay in place.  Relax and enjoy the morning as by the time you’re in your make-up artist’s chair everything is done ‒ it’s time to take a few breaths and enjoy your magical day!

Blush Effect by Sonja www.blusheffect.co.uk

Rob & Jason say: Planning and making sure everyone knows what is happening will take some of the stress away and allow you to enjoy the day even more. Here are some tips for styling on your wedding day:

•Start with a fresh haircut: Visit your barber a few weeks before the wedding day to get a fresh haircut. This will give your hair some time to grow out and settle into the style before the wedding.

•Consider a professional shave: If you usually have a beard or facial hair, it can be a relaxing and pampering experience, and you’ll look extra sharp. This could be a great activity to share with your best man or groomsmen.

•Take care of your grooming: Make sure your hair is styled and your beard or facial hair is well-groomed. Brush your teeth and use mouthwash to keep your breath fresh. Ensure your nails are clean, your skin is clear, and you’re well-groomed overall.

•Iron your clothes: Make sure your suit is freshly pressed and free of wrinkles. Iron or steam it the night before and hang it up to prevent any wrinkles from forming. Our range of accessories are made in a cotton poplin fabric that will hold its shape during the day.

•Consider the weather: If it’s likely to be a hot summer day, opt for a lighter-weight fabric and skip the jacket if necessary. A waistcoat with rolled up sleeves, bow tie and lapel accessory still give a formal but relaxed look. Check out some of our accessory options including cravats and neck ties to suit your look on the big day. If it’s cold, bring a coat or overcoat to stay warm before the main ceremony.

•Pay attention to details: small details can make a big difference in your overall look. Make sure your tie is straight, your shoes are polished, and your accessories match. Wear your favourite aftershave or beard oil and keep a miniature version to hand to keep smelling great throughout the day.

•Have a backup plan: Accidents can happen, so make sure you have a backup shirt, tie, or other accessories in case of emergencies.

A LOVE LETTER TO YOUR SKIN

I recently attended a masterclass with Super Facialist’s resident skincare expert, Charlotte Connoley, which posed the question: do we really know our skin type? If like me your answer is somewhat hesitant, it may interest you to know that there’s an easy way to find out. Charlotte suggests simply splashing your face with water and leaving it for 20-25 minutes. If it feels prickly afterwards, you have sensitive skin; if the water’s gone, then it’s dry; if the skin is tight, it’s dehydrated; and if it feels perfectly comfortable you’re blessed with a normal skin type. Whatever you discover, Super Facialist has a range of products specifically tailored to each type, recognising this can change throughout the year. This allows you to affordably create your own individual skincare routine to support your skin throughout the seasons.

Having learned that my skin is dehydrated, I tried the divine Rosehip Hydrate Calming Creamy Cleanser (£9, www.lookfantastic.com) and my annoying dry patches have been banished!

KEEP CALM AND MARRY ON

Professional nutritionists from Wedding Wellness share their stress-beating tips

Feeling the pressure to get everything right and done on time is inevitable when it comes to wedding planning. With a seemingly endless todo list and preparing to expect the unexpected, the sense of overwhelm can quickly take over. This, in turn, results in its own issues such as impaired sleep, digestive issues, skin breakouts, low mood and anxiety. While it isn’t helpful to tell someone planning their big day to simply not stress, thinking about ways to support a stressed body and maintain overall good health, can help prevent some of these unwanted symptoms and make the whole process more manageable.

Read on to discover five ways to support yourself against stress in the run up to your wedding day, courtesy of Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews at Wedding Wellness...

PRIORITISE SLEEP

One of the most underrated activities when it comes to your health is a good night’s sleep. Quality sleep isn’t purely about how many hours of shut-eye you get, but also about being mindful of eating and lifestyle habits, and how they can affect rest. When we consistently sleep well, our brains and bodies are more resilient, making us better at healing, fighting infection, concentrating and making decisions.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the run up to bed time, as both disrupt the brain’s natural restorative activity and block deep sleep, which is key to optimal health.

MAKE TIME FOR MOVEMENT

Exercise is great for physical health but

movement is just as important for our mental health, and ability to handle stress. Our bodies react to stress in the same way they might if encountering a bear in the wilderness! Allowing them the chance to move and release the build up of tension that comes from being in a stressful state, helps them to calm down and return to a state of normal. Movement in any shape or form also encourages deep or mindful breathing, which is another brilliant way of reducing stress and calming the mind and body. Aim for at least 20-30 minutes of your movement of choice per day.

EAT FOODS THAT HELP TO LOWER INFLAMMATION

The reason stress is so harmful is that it causes damage to the body known as oxidative stress. This can result in aches and pains, slow healing and a higher chance of catching a cold. Eating foods that help reduce this damage, are commonly referred to as antiinflammatory, as they promote healing and calm the stress response, aiding everything from gut and hormonal health to improving mood. Some of the best anti-inflammatory foods to include in your meals are: berries, ginger, garlic, dark green leafy vegetables, oily fish, nuts and seeds, avocado and wholegrains.

TAKE REGULAR BREAKS

When you have an endless to-do list, it’s easy to assume every spare moment should be used to work through as much of it as possible. Taking

proper breaks and using that time to actually relax, will calm your otherwise overworked nervous system and help your body return to a rested state. Use those moments to distract yourself with something calming, such as music, conversation or a proper lunch break away from a screen. Not only will this help reduce how stressed you feel, you will digest meals better and feel less fatigued too.

EAT REGULAR, WHOLESOME MEALS

It might sound obvious, but one of the best things you can do for your health is to eat wholesome, balanced meals at a regular time each day. The body loves habit and thrives on routine, so regular meals will help nourish and support a stressed body. Making sure you’re eating foods that include complex carbs will help you maintain energy, support normal body function and improve general health. Look for wholegrains and vegetables; protein like fish, chicken, beans and pulses; and healthy fats such as oily fish, nuts, seeds, avocado and olive oil.

Even if you’re planning a small wedding, it’s important to take into consideration care and entertainment for your littlest guests. While really exciting and enjoyable, weddings can at times be long and overwhelming for children, so having childcare in place ensures that both parents and little ones alike can relax and enjoy the day!

Some of our most favourite weddings have been small and intimate occasions! But even with a scaled-back wedding your reception can still pop and have all your guests enjoying themselves. We have a few ideas that can make small and intimate super-sized in terms of fun and laughs:

1. The first dance

The traditional first dance is the way to make the transition from wedding breakfast to wedding party. Your first dance is such a lovely way for you and your guests to see the newly married couple take to the floor and showcase their love and commitment to each other. Choose a song that means something to you both, from romantic ballads to rock, whatever works for you.

and relatives to fully switch off. We always recommend setting aside a room/quieter space for little ones, kitted out with a few toys and crafts, allowing children a calm space to relax throughout the day. Your nannies can not only assist with nappy changes, mealtimes, playtimes, walks around your venue and all other daytime elements, but can also assist with bedtime and babysit into the evening, meaning you and your guests can party the night away without distraction!

While you may not require a full créche set-up, putting these simple steps in place ensures everyone, big and small, has a brilliant day.

2. Get on the dancefloor

After your first dance your guests are up for a party. Make sure you pick a second song to fill that dancefloor. Talk to your DJ/band and pick something that will get your wedding party throwing some shapes.

3. Group dance

There’s always that one song, that everyone magically knows the moves to. Is it the Macarena? Is it YMCA? Whichever it is, get everyone involved on the dancefloor. We’ve even been to a wedding where the whole wedding party throw an invisible air guitar to each other in a massive circle! Whatever song choice you go for, commit and you’ll get everyone having a good ol’ time.

EXPERT ADVICE 81

STYLED TO PERFECTION

For our bijou wedding we still want our styling elements to be impressive; what can we do to achieve this?  Just because you’re having a small intimate wedding, doesn’t mean you can’t have that wow-factor! Different textures, heights and colours can really enhance your overall look of your tablescape. Texture can be incorporated with soft linens, fluffy flowers and structured glassware; while varying heights can be achieved with candles as well as high and low floral arrangements. This creates an interesting view as your guests enter your wedding breakfast room.

We love to add a chosen pop of colour be it through fresh florals, elegant coloured glassware or even in the use of napkins and table linens.

TAKING THE LEAD

We’re having an intimate day but still want it to run seamlessly ‒ would we still benefit from having a toastmaster at a smaller event?

However big or small your wedding you’ll benefit from securing a toastmaster to help with your big day. As The Society Toastmster, I will make sure that I provide you with any advice on all aspects of the planning and preparation, setting the tone and making sure that the day goes as you want it to with agreed levels of formality and fun.

On the day itself all aspects of the occasion are managed, from your guests’ arrival through to the evening celebrations, this can include liaising with the photographers, caterers and entertainment to ensuring that timings are adhered to so that you, your family and guests can relax and enjoy the best day ever. Nothing will be too much trouble!

SMALL BUT MIGHTY

We’re having a micro-wedding but still want our big day album to have the wow-factor ‒ what do you suggest?

Having an intimate wedding will create the opportunity for great memories with every single guest as you won’t be having to work your way through a long list of people. This is great when it comes to having pictures taken. A smaller guest list means your photographer will have more time to visualise capturing those sentimental moments. A trusted and experienced photographer will recognise this and be ready to capture the laughter, the tears and the excitement of not only the bridal couple but your guests also. They’ll be able to work the ‘crowd’ more easily too, perhaps putting a spin on the more traditional group shots. They’ll be less of a restriction on time, which means more attention can be put into the details of the picture and will mean you can easily have photos taken with every single guest. This will absolutely give your wedding album the all-important wow factor.

HONEYMOON NEWS 89

OF LOVEThe city

Aftera speedy trip on the Eurostar and a leisurely stroll, we arrived at the Shangri-La Paris. With all that Paris has to offer, the actual accommodation you find yourself using can often feel like an afterthought. However, with the history and majesty of the Shangri-La Paris, the hotel is as much a tourist destination as the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe or even the Eiffel Tower. A former home of Prince Roland Bonaparte, overlooking the River Seine, the hotel is centrally located in the 16th arrondissement and seamlessly blends European grandeur with traditional Asian hospitality.

FIT FOR ROYALTY

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a welcoming member of the hotel concierge who checked in our bags while we were given a guided tour. The building is a stunning feat of architecture and the location alone is enough to take your breath away. The hotel has plenty of stand-out features (too many to mention), but the impressive marble-lined swimming pool converted from the former stables, the relaxing spa, state-of-the-art health club and stunning entrance hall are all must-sees.

If you want to relax with a drink in your hand, then you’ll feel right at home in the stunningly decorated Le Bar Botaniste or Les Lounges, both of which offer a friendly and impressive service.

SUITE DREAMS

Catching our breath for a moment, we were shown to our suite. In all honesty, the view of the Eiffel Tower a few hundred feet away, in plain sight of our room, made it very hard to focus on the suite itself for a good few minutes! But after wiping the stardust from our eyes, we discovered that we had been treated to a magnificent space. The biggest bed I’d ever seen, a walk-in wardrobe and a lavish bathroom greeted us; with every aspect of the room designed around that view. The attention to detail was beyond anything I could have imagined with every amenity you could possibly need at your fingertips.

One of my favourite aspects was the balcony, which showed the tower in all its splendour and views of the city at every turn. Sitting there with a cup of tea and homemade macarons was one of the highlights of the trip, and I opted to be out on the balcony every spare moment I had.

EAST MEETS WEST

There are two restaurants at Shangri-La Paris, both of which are beautifully decorated with stand-out food. Shang Palace, where I had the pleasure of dining, is France’s only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant and what a treat it was! Inspired by Southeast China’s culinary traditions, the restaurant offers authentic Chinese cuisine by chef Samuel Lee.

With so much choice, we were a little lost for words, but thankfully the charming hostess was very helpful and suggested options that she felt we would enjoy.

Every dish was incredible and the food complemented the surroundings perfectly. We started with the chef’s special sashimi; immaculately prepared, it set the standard for what was to follow. The lobster dumplings were a particular favourite of mine and is something I’d eat every day if possible. After several dishes, it was safe to say I was stuffed, but when the dessert arrived, I couldn’t help myself; the rice balls with mixed fruits and whipped cream was delicious and one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime meal, then this is it. It’s been months since we visited, but we still talk about how delicious everything was.

TRUE ROMANCE

With such awe-inspiring surroundings, we couldn’t resist a short stroll over to the Trocadéro and across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. As beautiful a sight at night as during the day, we couldn’t believe our fortune.

When we eventually headed back to the hotel, we wearily made our way up to our bedroom. The suite had an impressive TV, but it almost felt like a redundancy next to the view from the windows. I’m typically a blackout sleeper, but on this occasion, I had to sleep with the curtains wide open.

After a wonderful night’s sleep, we ordered breakfast to our room and enjoyed it out on our balcony terrace. Barely noticing the brisk February weather, we dined in what felt like the historic heart of Paris. Breakfast was up to the high standards we’d come to expect from the Shangri-La Paris, and when it came to checking out, we felt devastated to be leaving. I can say with absolute certainty that we left with our chi restored and look forward to returning in the near future!

Melissa Cullen reveals why Paris is the perfect honeymoon destination
90

For our second evening in Paris, we had the fortune of being hosted by the Hôtel Dame des Arts. Just a stone’s throw from Notre-Dame, it’s located in the Latin Quarte, which is considered the artistic heart of Paris. The hotel boasts terrace rooms looking out to the Eiffel Tower, a spacious and luxurious rooftop bar, and a charming secret garden courtyard – a gem in the centre of a bustling, metropolitan area.

Entering through a sleek, sliding door, we felt like we’d been invited into an ultra-secretive club. The hotel’s lobby, with its dark motif, stylish sofas and low lighting simultaneously blended Art Deco architecture with the feel of a futuristic nightclub. After checking in, we were shown up to our room, which continued the theme exhibited in the lobby. The architectural vision of the hotel is singular, drawing you completely into the world the owners have created.

SLEEK AND SOPHISTICATED

Our room was the natural extension of the hotel; with all the amenities any couple could desire. Every aspect had been well thought out and cleverly made use of the space available. A sliding, frosted-glass door separated the bedroom from the bathroom area, and the use of lighting and sleek, curved panelling made us feel like we were on the set of a high-budget movie. Our room even had a terrace looking out to the Eiffel Tower, bringing us back into the heart of Paris.

DRINK IT ALL IN

After dropping off our bags, we were given a guided tour of the hotel. The beautifully arranged restaurant and bar giving way through an impressive door to a stunning garden space. A mix of comfortable furniture and grounding flora, the tranquillity of the area makes you forget being mere feet away from the busy streets surrounding the hotel – a true feat. Our next stop was the hotel’s gym. The curved, wooden panelling enveloping the walls of the room is really a sight to behold. The final stop of our tour was the building’s rooftop terrace, and I assure you, our guide had saved the best for last. The terrace looks out in every direction across Paris, choosing a seating location is an almost impossible task!

Major sightseer locations such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and the Panthéon are all visible from the terrace; with stunning pieces of Parisian history everywhere you look. I can imagine sitting at the bar on a summer’s evening watching the sun go down over one of the most beautiful cities in the world being a truly transformative experience.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Once our tour had ended, we made our way down to the restaurant for dinner. Starting with a cocktail in hand, the space had a buzzing atmosphere and was full of people laughing and enjoying the splendour. My hubby and I ordered the corn ribs with magic mayo and cotija cheese as a starter and were impressed by the delicious taste and presentation. After examining the menu and struggling to choose just one dish for our main, we asked our friendly waiter for his recommendations. We chose to share the pork ribs in a Roja and Verde sauce, and when it arrived at our table, we were both incredibly excited for what was to come. Every part was wonderful, and although we were sure we wouldn’t be able to fit any dessert, when we saw the menu, we just had to try the chocolate ganache cake with coffee cream. I’m a big sweet person, so the dessert ticked all of my boxes, and I would happily eat it over and over again if I could!

A FOND FAREWELL

After a busy few days exploring the city, it’s safe to say we were in need of some sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I drifted off and awoke never wanting to leave.

When we eventually motivated ourselves to go downstairs for breakfast, everything looked delicious and we couldn’t decide between the continental or cooked option or which of the vast array of drinks to go for. The food was delicious and when it came to checking out, we felt incredibly sad to be leaving and wished we could re-live the experience all over again. We’ll be heading back to Paris soon, and when we do, we’ll definitely be staying at both of these fabulous hotels again.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 91

HAMPSHIRE! Hooray for

the New Forest to find out what makes it such a special spot for mini-mooners

I’ma huge advocate for mini-mooning in the UK (obviously), and since the dark days of lockdown it’s increasingly become the thing to do –short trip post W-day here in Blighty followed by an overseas vacay later on if you’re so inclined. I’m here to tell you that for the former you’ll struggle to find better than the glorious New Forest. I recently visited two incredible hotels in Hampshire, each one perfect for newlyweds in their own way.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

After a picturesque drive through the New Forest spent pony spotting, we pulled up at Grade II listed hotel The Montagu Arms, tucked away in a quiet corner of Beaulieu, our first port of call on this trip. Incidentally, thanks to the rain I never did see a pony! The ample car park is located behind the hotel, so our introduction to the place was via the absolutely delightful grounds, reminiscent of the eponymous childhood story, The Secret Garden. Scattered with water features, beautifully tended flower beds, lawns and cobbled paths wending their way to the entrance, I only wished the weather had been kind enough to let us enjoy them more.

AN IDYLLIC RETREAT

Boasting 22 bedrooms and suites in the main house, with 33 in total within the hotel, each has it’s own unique design and layout, featuring the ultimate combination of comfort and sophistication. Decorated in a chic and charming country-house style, the soft tones and textures used to create a peaceful space were right up my street.

Our home away from home for the night was one of the property’s stunning Courtyard Retreats hidden amongst the aforementioned gardens and converted from the house’s original 1920s chauffeur’s garages. I don’t know what I was expecting, but to call Hazel a “room” would be doing it a gross disservice. With the look of a space taken straight from the pages of Home & Garden magazine, its vast glass façade looked out over the central courtyard allowing the best of the outside in, and

the team have left no stone unturned when it comes to providing all the comforts you could wish for. This even extends to the smallest of details such as the mini torch attached to the retreat’s keyring, to help you find your way safely through the gardens to the hotel at dinner time, or stagger back after a hearty meal and perhaps a wine flight.

Let’s talk about the bathroom! Possibly on a par with the footprint of my entire house, it boasted a roll top bath, twin sinks, walk-in shower, bidet, and the necessary, of course. You’re never going to step on each other’s toes getting ready here, and the SenSpa toiletries were a real treat, as well as a hint of what awaited on day two.

I can’t recommend this spot highly enough to newlyweds. It’s the perfect retreat for a secluded, romantic, relaxing break.

TIME TO DINE

It was time to see if dinner in The Terrace, the hotel’s awardwinning restaurant, was equal to the benchmark laid down by our accommodation. Marketing hails it as offering an unparalleled finedining experience, and I can’t argue with that. Led by executive chef, Dan Burrell, the menus here champion seasonality and fresh, hyper-local Hampshire ingredients, including produce from the hotel’s own bountiful organic kitchen garden.

Looking at the menu it was a difficult choice, but ultimately I opted for the 42-day aged beef tartare with horseradish and onion purée to start; followed by Cornish red mullet with champagne sauce, artichoke, mussels, and pink fir potatoes. I finished my meal with a delicious selection of local cheese and biscuits. Every mouthful of the entire meal was an explosion of flavour and culinary discovery, while the knowledgeable and charming sommelier, Paulo, selected the perfect English wine to go with it – a Kentish Chapel Down Bacchus, plus a cheeky taste of Norfolk’s Winbirri Bacchus. No evening would be complete without a nightcap, so we headed to the tranquil lounge for a Brandy Alexander, which I’ve since decided is my new favourite cocktail!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Incredibly sad to leave the hotel and it’s charming, friendly and helpful team, we set off after a hearty breakfast and hit the road again. Our destination was a mere six miles away in beautiful Brockenhurst: Carey’s Manor Hotel, The Montagu’s sister establishment. Although downhearted to see the latter in my rear-view mirror, it didn’t take me long to turn my thoughts to the planned day ahead spent in SenSpa at my next destination – the excitement was back!

It’s worth pointing out at this juncture that residents of The Montagu Arms can enjoy complimentary access to SenSpa, including it’s indoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and gym, with treatments and access to the hydrotherapy pool available at an additional cost. The kind folk there even offer free transfers. The choice of where you decide to rest your head is, purely down to your personal style. Where The Montagu Arms is intimate, boutique, tranquil, and secluded; Carey’s Manor offers 18th-century grandeur, vibrancy and a myriad of spaces to enjoy from the aforementioned spa, to its three restaurants, including modern British brasserie Cambium, traditional French bistro Le Blaireau, and authentic Thai restaurant Zen Garden.

PERFECTLY PAMPERED

On arrival, I wasted no time whatsoever in heading straight to the awardwinning SenSpa. A world-class Thai spa focusing on holistic wellness, inspired by ancient Eastern rituals, it was unlike any I’d been to before, so I was interested to see what the experience would have in store. We’d been treated to Hydrotherapy Pool access, and I was like a kid in a sweetshop. But where to begin? Across two floors, this state-of-the-art facility features the pool itself, crystal steam room, ice room, experience showers, herbal sauna and so much more. Adding this to your visit is something I would most definitely encourage as it’s not to be missed. My treatment was booked for the afternoon – a relaxing, full-body Thai massage using SenSpa’s very own natural products, which lifted me away on a cloud of aroma and ultimate relaxation. My therapist was incredible and really listened to me when I talked to her about problem areas and the amount of pressure I’d like. I headed back to the pool with a spring in my step, feeling revitalised and light as a feather.

There’s a wide range of spa packages available, so there’s bound to be something to suit you both and help you unwind following the highs of W-day.

BON APPETIT

By the time I managed to tear myself away from the calming waters of

SenSpa, there was just enough time to pop back to our gorgeous suite to brush up for dinner. Mum and I were thrilled by its two bathrooms, meaning we could both get ready in double quick time without fighting for mirror or sink space! The hotel has 77 bedrooms and suites all designed with tranquillity in mind. Some Manor Rooms in the main house feature a four-poster bed – honeymoon romance goals. Meanwhile, The Garden Rooms are more contemporary, each with a balcony or patio overlooking the grounds. The newly-designed suites offer a luxurious escape with features such as a roof terrace, spacious living area and chic, marble bathroom.

Our table was booked in Le Blaireau, which promised a menu of regional French food. Given it’s location at the other side of this vast hotel, and the fact the rain still hadn’t let up, we were happy indeed to hear that we didn’t need to set foot outside and could cheerfully wend our way through the cosy corridors to reach the restaurant. As I pushed open an unassuming door at the end of a corridor, I let out a gasp of delight. Was this the Hampshire equivalent of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? It was as though I’d stepped into the cobbled streets of Paris with the iconic Art Nouveau Metro sign in front of me and shop fronts complete with awning to my right. Past a vintage Citroen DS, lies the main restaurant, every bit the classic French bistro of a bygone era. So... much... fun!

The menu here is humble and indulgent – fine by me – I was ravenous after such a tiring day in the spa! I dined on a soufflé au fromage, a tasty burger from the specials board and crème brulee, all washed down with a glass of French wine, before going to bed full, relaxed, completely content, and dreaming of those illusive New Forest ponies.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 93

TREASURE A hidden

Danielle Harvey enjoys a blissful stay in the Surrey Hills

There’snothing my husband and I love more than finding boutique accommodation and treating ourselves to a night or two away to relax, rejuvenate and reconnect. From treehouses to converted shepherd’s huts we’ve enjoyed romantic getaways throughout the UK and our stay at The Barn in Surrey Hills was no exception – a serene setting offering complete tranquillity.

Nestled in the quaint English countryside, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it’s hard to believe you’re such a short drive from bustling towns and a train hop from the City. Upon arrival, you’re immediately blessed with sweeping views across the property’s six-acre offering of gardens and fields. Perched between two farms, with sheep and cows for neighbours, the beauty of the barn is its breathtaking landscape. Complemented by the owners’ historic, wisteria-clad country house, it’s a sight to behold and a romantic location for newlyweds.

Welcomed by host Jo – whose warm and friendly personality will leave you thinking ‘have we met before?’ – her attentive service is as much of the contribution to a delightful stay as the setting itself.

Separate from the main house, guests have total privacy. Accessed by a solid oak staircase with views across the fields, the barn also boasts it’s own private garden area for guests.

The accommodation is pristine, loving curated with comfortable décor and accessories providing a home-from-home feel, with little luxuries to truly celebrate post-vows. The bright open studio-style space has a feature freestanding double slipper bath with a stunning baroque screen for privacy. Its beautiful oak beams and 300-year-old bathroom door channel the country manor aesthetic and highlight the owners’ reclamation passions. The large double bed, sumptuous duvet and luxurious pillows created a slumbersome sanctuary for a peaceful night’s sleep. We adored the thoughtful touches throughout, candles and bubble bath, drinks facilities

and homemade biscuits, and the bottle of Prosecco on ice went down a treat ‒ we also enjoyed a glass (or two) at sunset in the private garden!

Guests are lucky that, not only is Jo a remarkable host but she’s an exceptional chef and provides all the cuisine while staying at the accommodation; whether you fancy a cosy private dinner in the barn, or al fresco in the garden with stunning vistas and a firepit to keep you warm.

Jo’s culinary passion The Ruby Supper Club, a pop-up supper club in the ‘secret garden’ space of the property, is a fusion of her Anglo-Indian heritage. Our evening meal – served al fresco as the sun set looking out to the fields beyond – was the aptly named ‘Ruby Murray’. An explosion of flavour and feast for the senses, from the takka dhal to the Kachumba chutney and raita, we both proclaimed it was ‘the best curry we’d ever had’. The same was said at breakfast, we indulged in a delicious full English (his) and eggs/avocado on sourdough toast (mine) and it rivalled anything we’d had in five-star hotels. It really is testament to Jo’s passion: serving food that her guests, friends and family, will love and enjoy.

It was hard leaving the tranquillity of The Barn in Surrey Hills. It really is the perfect stay for newlyweds on the night of the wedding, or a romantic break after the big day. The sanctuary created here is good for the mind, body and soul ‒ topped off with food for the soul to boot! The hosts make you feel welcome in their home surroundings, and after whirlwind 24 hours, we felt we were leaving friends. We’ll be back!
