A piece of cake
Welcome to another issue of Your North West Wedding
EDITORIAL
Senior Editor Melissa Cullen | 01376 535 611 melissa.cullen@county.wedding
As always, our August/September issue is full of inspiration, but my favourite part has to be our cake feature. Over the last few years, wedding cakes have become more than just something sweet to eat, they are works of art that look stunning in photographs. When you start thinking of ideas for your big-day bake, begin by narrowing down how many guests will be attending; if you have 30 guests, then a three-tiered cake will be too much or too little if you have 200 friends and family coming. Once you have a rough number, your cake maker will be able to advise how many tiers you need and how much it will cost. Don’t worry about there being any leftovers, as you can always provide cake boxes for your guests to take home, or you can freeze the cake and enjoy it on your first anniversary.
If you’re struggling to find the perfect company, begin by searching online and looking in magazines for inspiration. Once you’ve found a business you like, look at their past work to see if they can create the design that you’re after. It’s also important to read their reviews, check if they’re in your price range and that they’re available on your wedding date.

When I got married, we purchased a personalised cake topper of us dressed in our wedding attire with our beloved cat, and I cannot recommend this enough. All our guests commented on how wonderful it was, and a year later, I still look at it every day. If you have the budget, it’s worth investing in a memento that you can display in your home after the wedding. Believe me, when I say the day goes by in a flash, so you’ll love having something to look at regularly.
Happy planning!

BELOVED PETS
INNSiDE by Meliá, part of Meliá Hotels International, has revealed an in-house dog sitting service at its Manchester location. The new service will give couples the flexibility to travel with their dog, whilst also enjoying nonpooch-appropriate activities and attractions in the city.
To complement this new service, Manchester-based company Sticks & Socks have created pet hampers available to purchase at INNSiDE’s kiosk. The hampers contain grooming items such as a pampering nose and paw balm, eco-friendly organic shampoo, travel pack dog wipes and snacks, including organic and natural dog treats, a box of sausages and tasty biscuit bites. It’s also full of useful accessories to make your dog’s stay at INNSiDE more comfortable, such as a collapsible bowl, dog blanket and toys.
Garry Fortune, the UK director of operations, adds: “Over the last year, we’ve seen a big rise in guests booking into our hotels and bringing their dogs too. The UK has a reputation of being a nation of pet lovers, and we are definitely seeing that at INNSiDE UK. We are delighted to launch a dog sitting service at INNSiDE Manchester. The dog sitting service will give our guests the flexibility to spend their stay with their pet, but also engage in activities in the city such as visiting the theatre or a gig that may not be pooch appropriate. We have also seen guests celebrating their dog’s birthday with us, so the dog stores have created the ultimate birthday treat box available at the kiosk.”

Jodie and Matt met during their first year of university. They were both members of a drama society and involved in the yearly student pantomime. “I was creating a pole out of cardboard tubes, and Matt came over to tell me that it had started to sag,” says Jodie. “In my frustration, I swore violently at him and from that day on, Matt says he fell head over heels for my Northern charm. Matt was (and is) like sunshine. He makes everything brighter, more fun, and we have so much in common.”
Matt proposed in their flat on their 10 year anniversary by tying the ring to the collar of their friend’s dog, Billie. “We had been together a long time and talked about getting married,” shares the bride. “After several personal losses, it just felt right to celebrate what we had and do something for joy’s sake. On the day of our anniversary, we had planned a trip to Chester for the weekend to visit the zoo. We exchanged anniversary presents before we left, but Matt held us up saying he was waiting on a delivery. Suddenly Matt disappeared to get the door, and I heard a dog running up the stairs. I was understandably confused until Billie appeared, and Matt told me to check her collar. There was the ring! Billie joined in all the excitement when I said yes, running up and down the flat and bouncing on the sofa! We knew we didn’t want anything lavish, so we decided early on that we wanted to get married on our 11th anniversary. We also knew we wanted to have a small intimate ceremony, with a big party later in the year, as it seemed like less pressure and meant we could enjoy each part of the day.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...
23 REAL WEDDINGS
After a quick online search for small wedding venues in Manchester, we found The Portico Library. We both studied literature at university, Matt is an English teacher, and I write for a living, so it made a lot of sense! We got in touch with Michelle at the venue, and she invited us for a visit. As soon as we walked in and saw the rows of old books and stunning domed skylight, our minds were made up. It was the first and only venue we saw, as nothing could match up to that!
As we only had 29 guests, we wanted to give them something personal as a memento of the day. Sustainability was also really important to us, the wedding industry can be really wasteful, so we wanted something people could keep and use. We found some dark green recycled leather bookmarks on Etsy from a company called Undercover UK with gold bees on them that could be personalised with initials. These were paired with literature-themed postcards from Bookishly, on which we handwrote individual messages.
When discussing the wedding with our families, one of the main things they were interested in was the food. So, we decided to make sure they were well-fed throughout the day with some heart-shaped vegan shortbread from What Leila Bakes – Vegan Bakery.
Our flowers were created by Jilly at Into the Garden. We wanted to hire a local florist who works as sustainably as possible, and Jilly’s practice fit the bill perfectly. We went to her studio and had in-depth conversations about the kinds of flowers and colours we liked, what would be in season, and how we could commemorate members of our family that we had lost.
We left the bridal transport to my dad, who smashed it with an old VW Campervan from Boho Brides. Matt and his family were transported by a minibus from local firm, Belle Vue Manchester Limited, who were so accommodating and professional.
Grand Pacific Manchester provided our catering. We booked them mainly based on their Instagram pictures. It seemed dark and moody and in keeping with the romantic look of The Portico Library. Fortunately, it was just a five-minute walk too! They gave us a stunning private room, which was panelled in dark wood with lots of atmospheric lighting.

I wore a boho-style wedding dress by Rembo Styling, which I got from Serendipity Bridal in Stockport. I didn’t really know what I wanted, and I was worried that I wouldn’t find anything that looked like ‘me’. I had begun to give up a little bit when a friend spotted Serendipity Bridal. I made an appointment and Sara made me feel so relaxed. Her boutique is beautiful and chilled, and she was very helpful, making suggestions and listening to how I felt about everything I tried on. When I tried on my dress, I immediately knew it was what I wanted.
As a teacher, Matt wears a suit every day to work. He knew he didn’t want to wear something that would remind him of the working day, so he chose something a little more alternative. He went to Moss Bros and found a lovely blue suit with subtle pink pinstripes. He had a tie he knew he wanted to wear, burgundy with three birds on to commemorate the three close family members he had lost, so the suit had to go with that. He also picked a dark blue shirt, which helped the tie stand out, and a tie pin which once belonged to his dad.
I accessorised with a bespoke cream and white dried flower crown from Luna and Wild and a personalised leather jacket from Niamh Designs. The addition of the leather jacket helped give it an alternative edge that made it feel a lot more me. I can’t wait to wear it again on our honeymoon.
After the wedding, there was a drinks reception under the dome at The Portico Library. We are also having a wedding party later in the year, which will be themed around Jurassic Park, as it’s our favourite film.
Sharing our own vows was our favourite part of the day. Whilst writing them took a lot of time and thought, it was definitely worth it! There were lots of tears and laughs from both us and the wedding party.
We planned the wedding ourselves, but every supplier we worked with went above and beyond. Our guests have frequently spoken about how brilliant Maddie was as our photographer, and Jilly made sure the flowers were perfect. We were so impressed by them!

DAY Adreamy
Jess and Sam incorporated warm, autumnal colours into their big day at Gisburne Park Estate

Jess and Sam met in drama class when they were both teenagers.
“Sam asked if he could help me with my lines one day, and we hit it off straight away, becoming the best of friends,” says Jess. “We didn’t become an official couple until we were a few years older and realised our bond was something more than friendship.”
Sam proposed on the day they moved into their first home together. “He originally planned to do it in Italy (my favourite place in the world), however, due to the pandemic, he had to make other plans,” shares the bride. “The day we got our keys, Sam worked with his best friend to set up the front room with candles, fairylights, flowers and rose petals. He was there waiting for me, and it was a big surprise! I never thought he would do it then, considering we had just spent all our money on the house! It was so romantic and intimate. I loved that it was just the two of us, and I cried my eyes out! Sam was very nervous, although I don’t know why as we had been together for seven years by this point, and it was very clear we were going to spend the rest of our lives together.”
SETTING THE SCENE
The couple came across Gisburne Park Estate at a wedding fair. “I found it by accident when searching for wedding inspiration, and it just so happened that the wedding fair was happening that weekend,” explains Jess. “Luckily, we were both free, so we decided to go. When we got to Riverside House, we were invited to have a look at the outdoor ceremony tent. It’s situated in the forest behind the house, and as soon as we saw it, we knew it was our venue. I started crying almost immediately, as I could already envision the day. It was so beautifully set up, with candles at the end of each bench and a backdrop at the end of the aisle. It blew us away, and we booked our wedding that same day.
“We wanted everything to be chilled and laid back, so our guests could enjoy the day just as much as we did without any fuss or stress,” adds Jess. “We decided to have a top table with three long trestle tables coming off it, as we wanted to make sure that all of our guests were sat together and there wasn’t a divide between our families.”
For their favours, the couple gave their guests ginger biscuits in the shape of a maple leaf, which doubled up as place settings. They also created gift bags made up of sweets, snacks, a perfume tester and a scratch card.
“Our flowers were a mixture of fresh and dried blooms provided by Milly Davey Flowers,” remembers the bride. “The bridesmaid posies were a smaller version of my bouquet, and Sam and his groomsmen had buttonholes in the same colours. Our mums also had a corsage each, and Sam’s best woman wore a floral hair comb.”
The couple’s cake was created by Rosehill Cake Studio. “The amazingly talented Margaret made a square cake with three tiers in different flavours,” recalls Jess. “The base was made of clear acrylic with fairylights, leaves and acorns to reflect the autumnal theme and colour scheme. The cake itself was a marble effect and had a beautiful vine winding down it with edible acorns and berries. It was so spectacular that people thought it was a decoration rather than a cake. They were gobsmacked when we went over to cut it!
“Our catering was provided by Betty’s Tipis,” continues Jess. “We decided to have a barbecue for our main meal and wood-fired pizzas for the evening. Later in the day, we had firepits and benches on the grass area outside, along with sparklers and marshmallows.”
DRESSED TO IMPRESS
“My wedding dress was called Teegan by Ronald Joyce,” shares Jess. “I never envisioned myself wearing a mermaid-style dress but was intrigued by how I would look in one. I found Teegan in Orchid Designs in Clitheroe, and as soon as I put it on, I knew it was the one. I loved my silhouette in that style and was dazzled by the embellishments and how the dress fell. It also had a train which had always been a dream of mine. I accessorised with a long veil, which sat on a hair comb at the

back of my hair.”
Sam and his groomsmen chose the same suit design. “It was a blue jacket with a small tweed effect and a waistcoat with a burnt orange tie,” says the bride. “Sam wanted to be matching with his entourage and even got the same suit for his little cousin Isaac, who was the honorary best man. Sam’s best woman wore a beautiful burnt orange dress, which matched the groomsmen’s ties. My dad also wore the same suit, which was a really nice touch.
“I bought the bridesmaid dresses from JJ’s House,” adds Jess. “I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the material. Each bridesmaid wore the same style in a rich burgundy colour. The dresses were tied at the waist, floor length, with a bell sleeve which was fitting for the time of year. I made sure that they all chose a design that they were happy with, and they all looked beautiful.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE
“My beautiful sister sang Christina Perri’s A Thousand Years as I walked down the aisle,” recalls the bride. “She sang it so beautifully, and it was one of the most special moments of the day for me. We then had entertainment between the ceremony and the reception as we wanted to ensure there was never a dull moment for our guests. We began with our wonderful friend and extremely talented wedding singer Joel Brown, who performed some of our favourite songs.
“We asked Sam’s best woman and founder of Just Imagine UK to provide some form of entertainment later in the evening,” adds Jess. “Our nearest and dearest came together to perform a mash-up of our favourite musical numbers. They even got Sam up on a chair and dressed him in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’s robes and made him sing all the colours of the coat from the song. It was the most spectacular moment, and so amazing to see so many of our loved ones putting so much effort into making the performance extra special. We knew something was happening but never expected that, and the guests certainly didn’t either! Our first dance was also a very special moment for us; we kept looking at our guests and couldn’t believe that they were all there for us. At that moment, when we were dancing and looking at each other, it was like we were all alone with our entire future ahead of us.”
The couple hired a fire-breather, who performed outside around the firepits. “The guests could not believe their eyes,” shares Jess. “Lastly, when the party was in full swing, we had a saxophonist/DJ called Saxo Dan, who had a light-up saxophone and played along to well-known, popular tracks. It was absolutely incredible and really set the party off!”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
“It was a surreal day for us,” explains Jess. “We had been doing nothing but planning the wedding for two years, and neither of us could believe that the day had finally come. Sam was nervous, but I was relaxed and people couldn’t understand how I wasn’t more apprehensive. I was marrying my best friend and the love of my life, a moment I had dreamt of for so long, so anything else that came with it was too late to worry about. All that was left to do was enjoy the day, which we did in abundance. We kept stealing moments together, just watching the day unfold, and we couldn’t believe that it was our wedding day!
“My dad’s speech was a special moment, as he kept telling me he didn’t think he could do it as he was too nervous,” adds the bride. “My mum had one prepared in case he couldn’t do it. He ended up writing it on the back of a parking ticket he found in the car that morning! It was the perfect mix of funny, beautiful, emotional and moving. Everybody loved it, and as soon as he was handed the mic, he was a natural.”

DAY perfect
Charly and Mark celebrated their intimate wedding at The Belsfield Hotel
Images courtesy of West View Photography
Charly and Mark met in Kirkby Lonsdale at a mutual friend’s party. “We were introduced by a friend who thought we would get on,” says Charly. “Mark was a keen rugby player at the time, so for me, the physical attraction was instantly there, he then charmed me with his good humour and quick wit! By the time Mark proposed to me, we had been together for over 11 years, had a mortgage together and a young child, so it wasn’t necessarily a surprise proposal, but I wasn’t expecting it when it
happened! We were on a walk at Tarn Hows in the Lake District with our daughter. We stopped to enjoy some lunch while sitting on the edge of the lake, and as we started to think about continuing our walk, Mark got down on one knee and pulled out a box containing a gorgeous ring! It was an immediate yes from me!”
Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...
33 REAL WEDDINGS
We chose St Annes Church for our ceremony as it contains a lot of family history for Mark’s side of the family. It’s a beautiful venue and was the perfect size for the number of guests we were inviting. We chose The Belsfield Hotel for our reception as the space was gorgeous, and we wanted to be in the Lake District as we have spent a lot of time there as a couple. The staff at The Belsfield Hotel were so welcoming and friendly, and we felt it was the right place for our special day.
For our favours, we gave our guests wildflower seeds. Mark keeps bees, so we wanted a favour that would support a cause that we enjoy. A lot of our close friends have small children, so we chose something that could be enjoyed as a family activity and was suitable for all ages.
We chose to have one big table, laid out in a U shape, with Mark, our daughter and I at the head of the table, and our friends and family coming off either side. Given the small number attending the wedding and the intimate feel we were going for, we felt one big table would bring everyone together.
I wanted our flowers to look as though they had been picked from a hedgerow or wild meadow. I found some ideas I liked on Pinterest and sent them over to our florist, The Quirky Petal, and let her run with them. I knew I wanted to have eryngium in my bouquets and some of the buttonholes, but beyond that, I left the other floral choices up to her and she well and truly delivered!
We hired a car through Enterprise Rent-A-Car, so that we would have use of it over the weekend and wouldn’t be restricted in any way. We were given an Audi Q7 and it was lovely to have a beautiful, spacious car for the weekend.
All of the catering was provided by The Belsfield Hotel; we opted for afternoon tea, which was delicious. They also provided children’s versions for the little ones who attended, which was a lovely way to include them.

My dress was designed by Maggie Sottero; I didn’t have a particular style in mind when I went wedding dress shopping, but I knew I wanted something fitted at the top, flowy from my hips down and not at all puffy. I tried on a few dresses and felt lovely in them, but it was this gown that really took my breath away, and when I first saw myself, I knew it was the one. I was 19 weeks pregnant when we married, so I was very fortunate that The Bridal Collection were able to alter my dress to accommodate my growing bump.
Mark’s suit was by Marc Darcy from a boutique called The Black Bicycle in High Bentham. He wanted something that he could wear again at future occasions. The best man had a similar Marc Darcy suit already, so we got the groom and best man matching waistcoats and ties.
The bridesmaids wore beautiful sage green dresses bought from ASOS. We chose a floor-length, long-sleeved style so it was a similar shape to mine.
Mark and I were excited more than anything else; there weren’t many nerves as we were both pretty sure the other would turn up! Mark was nervous about his speech, but other than that we shared a wonderful, happy and exciting day. It was over too quickly and it felt like we were in the church for just a matter of minutes!
The ceremony was lovely and was exactly what I hoped for. Given there were six children under the age of four there, there was a bit of worry that there would be tantrums to deal with, particularly from our daughter who doesn’t really like to be separated from us. However, our vicar was fantastic; he was reassuring and welcomed the children to roam freely around the church, which our daughter took full advantage of. This meant Mark and I were able to focus on each other and exchange vows with sincerity, which meant so much to us.
One stand-out moment was when my sister got left at the church! Everyone believed she’d hopped into someone else’s car, so we all drove off without her! Fortunately, one of the vergers was heading towards Bowness, so kindly gave her a lift. We only realised our mistake when she arrived at The Belsfield Hotel and let us know what had happened!
35 REAL WEDDINGS
For our honeymoon, we stayed at The Quiet Site in Ullswater for two nights. We took our daughter with us and stayed in one of their burrows. It snowed heavily whilst we were there, which made the views even more picturesque. We spent our time exploring, eating, playing and just being together as a family, which was what we wanted.

Local cake makers share some of their favourite seasonal wedding bakes
Wedding cakes are quickly becoming something more than just a sweet treat. They are works of art that can incorporate your personalities and the time of year. With so many options to choose from it can feel overwhelming, but don’t panic, there is something out there to suit everyone. Start by thinking about how many guests are attending your big day; if you have 30 guests, then a three-tiered cake will be too much or too little if you have 200 friends and family coming. Once you have a rough number, your cake maker will be able to advise on how many tiers you need. Don’t worry about there being any leftovers, as you can always provide cake boxes for your guests to take home or you can freeze them. Check with your supplier that it wasn’t frozen previously and enjoy it for months to come; you could even save some for your first anniversary.
The time of year is a great way to narrow down flavours, colours and designs for your big-day cake. With this in mind, we’ve asked local talented suppliers to send in some of their favourite seasonal creations to help inspire you…

LET ME GO Never
Lakeside Hotel & Spa was the backdrop for this autumnal styled shoot
Images courtesy of Clare Gelderd Photography
This beautiful shoot at Lakeside Hotel & Spa was part of a wedding open day. “We wanted to showcase the venue with the help of a few local suppliers who we highly recommend,” says Ashleigh Campbell, the sales manager at Lakeside Hotel & Spa. “Clare, the photographer who was coming to showcase her work and take a few shots, came up with the great idea of creating a staged photo shoot. She quickly got to work with Andrea from The Flower House, who helped make the day really special; she even acted as a photographer’s assistant, which was a great help. As the Lake District presented a chilly display of winter weather, it gifted an opportunity for the suppliers to pull together, work with the elements and add a sprinkling of warmth. Beginning with soft glowing natural make-up and warming lips, teamed with subtly styled free curls, all set to last the conditions of the day. With a typical autumnal palette, The Flower House styled a cascading, vintage bridal bouquet, which tied in perfectly with Belle Lueur Bridal’s Cameron dress by Made With Love. To further enhance the warmth of a loving ceremony, the suit was a Marc Darcy burgundy design from A Family Affair Bridal & Menswear, rich in colour, texture and certainly a cosy layer for the bride as the snowfall began. Moving through to the Windermere Suite, dressed welcoming, warm and homely with a variety of blossom trees that please the eye and only amplify the spacious and exclusive space. With a private patio area, we embraced the heat of the outdoor firepit, ideal for keeping warm as the snow falls or even toasting marshmallows. As always with Clare Gelderd Photography, the shoot was captured naturally and then processed with warmth, colour and depth – magnifying the idyllic Lake Windermere landscape, venue and efforts by all involved.”

Tohelp make your wedding stand out for all the right reasons, it pays to get the entertainment right. For the happy couple, the big day may go by in a flash, but for family and friends, especially travel-weary guests or those with young children, any lulls in the proceedings can dampen the feel-good factor. To make sure your celebration is one to remember, we’ve put together a feature showcasing some of the best musicians and entertainers in the North West…
BECKY & JOSH
Becky & Josh is a laid-back acoustic duo based in Lancashire, providing music to weddings and events all over the North West and UK, putting their spin on a variety of pop, soul, R&B, Motown, jazz, and rock classics. A blend of acoustic guitar and vocals with additional percussion means you can expect to hear your favourite songs, but not in the way you know them. From your ceremony to the first dance, Becky & Josh will bring an upbeat atmosphere to your wedding day. The duo offers three packages designed to add music throughout the day, so whether you’re looking for romantic classics, cheesy pop during your drinks reception, or classic soul and Motown for your wedding breakfast, they have something to suit.

HOT TOPIC: wedding worries
Our experts solve your problems
FALL IN LOVE
My wife-to-be and I are getting married next autumn and want some couple shots both in the venue and at the nearby beach. Do you have any suggestions?
Beach shots in autumn can be tricky, so I recommend setting aside some time just before sunset or what is known as ‘golden hour’ to get some lovely shots, as the colours at that time of day will look wonderful.
Chat with your photographer about possible locations in and around your venue. Meet with them at your venue and walk around the grounds, or if that’s not possible, your photographer should visit the space anyway or know it well so you can chat through options in your final meeting. You could always use Google maps or look on the venue’s website to get some ideas as well.

PICTURE PERFECT
I want to book our photographer and was wondering how I can keep the price down without compromising on quality?
When you’re planning your wedding and have a strict budget to work with, it can be hard to know where to save money. When it comes to your wedding photography, knowing what’s important to you will help you make the best decision. Most of my couples value photography and want to feel relaxed knowing they have booked someone easy to get along with, who has years of wedding photography experience and will deliver a gallery of images consistent with what they’ve seen on my social media accounts and website and are happy to pay what I charge for my services. Having said this, once you have found a photographer whose work you love, you could have a look at the different packages that they offer.
For instance, I offer a full-day photography package with a second shooter and a pre-wedding shoot included, but if you wanted to save a bit of money, you could book me for a full day without the extras. I also have a part-day option that would cost less than a full day.
Talk to your chosen photographer and be honest about your budget constraints; it might be that they could meet you in the middle or do a couple of hours less on the day to accommodate your budget.

EXPERT ADVICE 51
CAPTURE THIS
We’re clueless when it comes to photography; is there a list of shots we should ask our photographer to capture?
Absolutely! While every event or occasion is unique, there are some common shots that you can ask your photographer to capture. Such as wedding prep, guest arrivals, important details like family heirlooms and key moments like cake cutting, speeches and first dances.
If any special activities or traditions are happening during the event, tell your photographer about them so they can capture those moments.
These are just suggestions, and it’s important to communicate your specific preferences and requirements to your photographer. Discussing your vision and any specific shots you have in mind will help them understand your expectations and capture the moments that are most important to you.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS
What are your top tips for planning an outdoor wedding?
Probably the biggest challenge you’ll face when planning an al fresco wedding is – all together now – the weather! But if you plan, plan, and plan some more, you’ll find ways around it, while still having the best open-air celebration you could wish for.
Make sure everyone’s adequately informed. When you send out your invitations make sure you’re clear which parts of your day will be celebrated outside, so that guests know to make their own arrangements, in terms of attire and protection. Keep an open line of communication with your suppliers too and collaborate with them on wet-weather backup plans. For example, at which point will you be prepared to make the decision to take it all inside? Who is going to be responsible for moving the whole shebang?
Check on the access to your venue. If you’re tying the knot in a field, is there parking nearby? Are there accessible roads and paths to get to you? If not, have a think about how you can overcome these challenges. Perhaps you need to lay on extra transport from a local car park for example. Also, think about accessibility from a point of view about any less able-bodied guests you may have coming.
Sound tends to drift away in the open air, so make sure you have all the tech in place to ensure everyone can hear you as you say, “I do.” You’ll also need to check with the venue whether there are any restrictions on late-night music, as you don’t want to be disturbing the local wildlife or residents! Also on the tech front, do you have all the creature comforts in place such as loos and generators?
Have a think about what cover you want to provide for you and
DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
What style of music would you suggest to please everyone?
Include all genres on your wedding day, from soul and Motown to funk. Spice it up with house music and nu-disco for the under 40s. If you add in some current chart pop music, everyone will be happy and dance the night away.
Simon Levi www.simonlevisax.com
your guests. This is, of course, crucial for the comfort of all, not only in terms of wet weather protection, but also from the sun – we’ve had some scorchers in recent years. Once you’ve settled on a vibe for your nuptials, this should all become clear. An elegant, lined marquee is ideal for a classic wedding, whereas a tipi is the perfect choice for a boho or rustic vibe.
When it comes to styling, really look at your setting and plan ways in which you can complement it with your theme. Nature can do an incredible amount of heavy lifting on this front if you strive to work with it, rather than against it.

BEAUTY NEWS 69
Being Sophie
Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin
Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.
What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?
The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.
What have you been up to since you left the show?
I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.
You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?
Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.
Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?
I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being
70

a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!
How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?
I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.
Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?
I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.
For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?
As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the
whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.
Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!
Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?
I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.
What make-up products can’t you live without?
Cream contours and eyebrow gel!
What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?
At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

One of the easiest ways is to get some layers put in it. If you’ve got collarbone-length locks or longer, then longish layers are best with the shortest being chin or jaw length. This way, you take weight out of the hair but keep the length while creating body.
Having a fringe put in is also a great way of achieving more volume. Because a fringe is made up of hair taken from the top of the head, you’re removing weight there and pushing it to the front.
Blow-drying your hair properly is a good idea too. So, dry using a small, round brush dry from roots upwards. People think a big brush is the best way to create body, but actually a smaller size is better as you can get right in at the root lifting from the scalp. Blow-drying hair with your head upside down is also a good trick. Remember, you’re trying to defy gravity, getting the hair away from the head. The MDLondon Blow with a large nozzle and a really good bristle brush will give you a fantastic blow-dry with flyaway- and frizz-free shine and lots of volume!
You’ll want to look for resin-based blow-dry products containing PDP VA core polymers such as mousse, blow-dry sprays, and hair protection sprays. These can go hard or a bit crispy but as long as you’re constantly moving the brush while you’re drying you’ll avoid the worst of this. But bear in mind that you do need some of that crunchiness as it’s this texture that supports the volume. I love a product called Sugarlift by Wella EIMI.
Dry shampoos and texturising sprays are good at supporting volume too. I use Umberto Giannini Texture Boost on myself and on my clients. You can use it throughout the day, so if you feel your hair getting a bit flat, just flip your head forward and spray it in at the roots whenever you need to. Above all, you don’t want anything oily on the hair – no oils, no serums, nothing greasy as they’re heavy.
Another good method for creating body is adding waves. If you put a curling tong through sections of your hair, it creates push against other sections and that in turn creates volume. But if you don’t put enough wave in at the roots, the hair sits a bit flat, so make sure you concentrate the tongs at the root, which is where you want the lift.
On the big day, put medium Velcro rollers in your hair and leave them while you have your make-up done. Try a bit of backcombing at the roots too, teasing the hair with a wide-toothed comb.
You could do one of these things or all of them and it will help you. I guess what you don’t want is unrealistic volume so that it looks like a parody. You want to find a happy medium where the hair is healthy looking, so I’d recommend experimenting before the wedding until you find that sweet spot.

THE PERFECT FIT
How long before the wedding should I book my alterations and what should I expect from my first appointment?
It’s best to contact a seamstress as soon as you’ve bought your dress – even if it is going to take a full 12 months to arrive into the store. Bridal seamstresses can get booked up to a year in advance, so it’s best to be ahead of the game with your appointments. You can also ask for a rough price so you can budget this into your costs.
You may find that seamstresses work in different timescales and various ways. Generally, I recommend having your first fitting around eight to 12 weeks before your wedding date. This fitting will allow you to discuss any design changes you’d like to make (adding belts, sleeves etc), and we will also pin and measure the work that needs to be done to create the perfect fit.
We will then book your check fitting, which generally takes place around two weeks before the big day. We will check everything fits perfectly, and if it does, your dress will be steamed and ready to take away. If there are still adjustments to be made, we have time before the wedding date to make them. If you have opted for some design changes, you may find that you require a couple of extra fittings to make sure everything is perfect. If you’re looking to create something custom, it’s best to let your seamstress know during your first enquiry, so they can schedule enough time ahead of your wedding to create any custom pieces.

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.
Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

Dressed TO IMPRESS
The team at Colour Me Beautiful share their fashion advice for the groom-to-be
Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:
CHOOSING A STYLE
There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.
Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.
Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.
Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.
Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.
Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.
HIRING
Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance
and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.
Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.
ACCESSORIES
The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.
Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.
Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.
Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.
Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.
A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.
If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!
Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.
Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf.
Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.
Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.
GROOMING
Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

MY EVERYTHINGMy first, my last,
Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.
AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?
A ROOM WITH A VIEW
I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.
UNDERWATER LIFE
Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene

Rachel Westall experienced five-star, desert island luxury at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.
indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.
A FOODIES’ PARADISE
Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.
Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.
FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL
Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...
TRUE ROMANCE
It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I

HONEYMOON REVIEW 81
HAVEN A Celtic
Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland
WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!
Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.
A SPOT OF R&R
The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.
If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!
We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...
This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.
As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!
The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.
HEARTY FARE
The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.
This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.
Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.
I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.
When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.
I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.
For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.
If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 83

Olivia Gibson ventures to Staffordshire for a spa minimoon at Moddershall Oaks
Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.
I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.
REST YOUR HEAD
With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.
All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.
When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.
THE ULTIMATE SPA SESSION
Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to
snuggle up.
The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.
I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.
Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.
