lovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your Hampshire and Dorset Wedding! Summer has entered the chat, and I couldn’t be more excited! The time of year is so popular for weddings with more consistent weather, summer nights, various blooms in season and extra daylight for celebrations – plus, you can utilise any outdoor areas.
Hello
If you’re embracing the outdoors, remember to provide loved ones with some shaded areas so they can take breaks from the sun. Why not supply guests with sun cream for favours and opt for an ice cream truck for some real summer vibes? Avoid direct sunlight at the hottest points of the day if possible and look for breathable attire. If you’re concerned about the heat, talk to your suppliers who can advise accordingly.
As the time of year is so popular for weddings, ensure you book companies as soon as possible as they get booked up quickly. Start the planning process with an open mind and ensure you ultimately plan a wedding that symbolises you both. Remember that teamwork makes the dream work! Once you have set a budget, decided on a theme and booked a venue, everything else will fall into place.
To help with the process, we’re hand-selected suppliers all around the counties to help bring your vision to life. We’ve got you covered from showstopping venues, styling inspirations, expert advice, the latest wedding news and stunning local weddings. We even have stunning-styled shoot full of local suppliers – the dream team could be a few pages away!.
That’s all from me; happy planning! Olivia

HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Hotel du Vin Poole has fully refurbished its guest bedrooms, suites, and bathrooms to refresh the décor with nautical nods that ooze quiet luxury and sophistication.
The refurbishment of the 38 rooms found within this impressive Georgian-style building includes the addition of a bold colour scheme that blends statement orange hues with relaxing blue, teal and grey tones that speaks to the seaside location in a modern way.
The four-star Hotel was initially built in 1776 as the Mansion House, and the refurbishment blends original features with the signature Hotel du Vin style. The newly updated décor embraces texture and warmth while taking inspiration from Poole’s maritime heritage and its popularity as a seaside holiday resort. Many rooms feature whimsical beach hut print wallpaper, with artwork and accessories featuring seagulls, shellfish and nautical motifs informed by the area’s culture.
The rooms feature comfortable hand-sprung mattresses, fine Egyptian linen, deep baths, powerful drench showers, plasma TVs and air-conditioning.

Perched by the sea overlooking The Solent, Highcliffe Castle is a dreamy wedding setting thanks to its prime clifftop location, beach access, surrounding woodland area, showstopping views and characterful features. First inspired by the work of Capability Brown, the grounds and estate have seen many changes through the centuries but still retain some of his original touches. Today it makes an excellent location for woodland walks, outstanding viewpoints and picnics.
From the moment guests arrive at the impressive driveway to the portecochère, the remarkable architecture with historical and Gothic revival features will wow guests. Ceremonies take place in The Winter Garden with 110 people. The conservatory-style building is flooded with natural lighting, offering views over the castle grounds and a romantic setting for the vows. The room’s design creates fabulous music acoustics, whether for baby grand pianos, media centres or string quartets.
Why not dine in the majestic Great Hall after the “I dos”, which can host 110 people and creates a spectacular backdrop for wedding breakfasts? With its carved stonework, exposed brick and 30-foot-high stained glass Jesse window, guests will be in awe of the special ambience this room creates. For a more intimate setting, the Dining Room offers a romantic and elegant backdrop to celebrations with whimsical exposed brickwork and impressive views over the lawns to the sea for up to 80 guests. Dance into the night in the atmospheric Drawing Room with a band or DJ. Its blank canvas allows couples to add fairylights, a disco ball, drapes, illuminated letters and a dancefloor. The Castle Bar links the dining and dancing areas of the castle to create a lively hub for all celebrations.
We love… that the dedicated wedding team will ensure that all plans run smoothly. A rehearsal will be booked before each wedding to ensure the wedding party and couple will unwind on their special day, knowing everything is under control.

The venue is ideal for weddings all year round. The Queen Mary Lawn provides the perfect spot for drinks receptions in the summer months, while the Tudor-style Music Bar is cosy in the winter.
The Ballroom is the spectacular centrepiece of the venue. It offers couples the most magnificent setting for sumptuous wedding breakfasts for 100 people, followed by evening celebrations with 180 nearest and dearest. The original fireplace takes centre stage, and the adjoining Music Bar provides extra seating in the evenings.
When couples book the venue for their special day, they’ll receive a menu tasting session to try some tasty dishes, a complimentary stay in the Honeymoon Suite on the big day, help from the dedicated wedding coordinator throughout the planning experience and a list of recommended suppliers.

Rownhams House was built by Sir Isaac Newton’s nephew in 1762 for his new and beautiful bride Catherine Barton, a lady of some fame and fortune. The Georgian house and the Medieval Coach House are situated on 12 acres, home to manicured lawns, woodland areas, a picturesque lake and an ice house. The trees, flower borders, wild meadow and mature plants offer the perfect setting for many stunning photo opportunities. The large and flat top lawn is well placed for drinks receptions and games such as croquet. It can also be used as a seating area for outdoor wedding ceremonies under the clock tower arch. Weddings for up to 120 people can occur in the Grand Library with its attractive plasterwork walls and ceiling, in the dabbled shade of the woods or by the shimmering lake. Wedding receptions can occur in the Grand Library with 110 people,
in a hired marquee or in the Coach House for smaller weddings. The calming and comfortable Billiard Room and Morning Room offer the perfect spaces for indoor drinks receptions and photographic backdrops should the rain come tumbling down. Couples can use these areas for smaller, more intimate weddings for up to 60 people.
The Coach House, built in 1600 by the Knights of St John, comprises several large rooms perfect for evening receptions. The Harvest Room has seating and eating areas, the Sofa Room is great for relaxing, and the hall serves food and cake. There’s also a dedicated room for live music, DJs, bands and a bar. What’s more, the owners want brides to be at their best on their special day and offers a private Brides Room.
To help ensure the day runs without a hitch, the team offers prewedding planning meetings and allows the bridal party and approved caterers access to the house the day before weddings to set up and the day after for collection.

THE LIGHTS way Love
Sam and Steve had a beautiful wedding at Macdonald Elmers Court Hotel & Resort
Images courtesy of Robbie Khan Photography
These lovebirds met in 2018 through Plenty of Fish, where they immediately hit it off and never looked back! Steve proposed on Christmas day three years later in front of the kids and the bride’s mum. They had talked about getting married over the years, but it was still a complete shock to Sam who was over the moon. Here the bride shares details about their special day…
27 REAL WEDDINGS
We aimed to enjoy every second of the day when planning the wedding.
We visited Elmers Court Hotel a few years ago for a spa night, and booked the property immediately after revisiting. The team were so helpful and offered great packages!
I’m not the most confident person and felt self-conscious about walking down the aisle. As soon as I saw Steve, my worries melted away.
We brought personalised mini-wooden noughts and crosses as well as ring toss for the tables, which were such cute keepsakes.
Our welcome sign, table plan and table numbers all tied in with our theme.
Our centrepieces were large glass vases that were so pretty. We just added some dusky rose flowers to match our wedding theme.
28
Our magician Colin Phillips was terrific! He had everyone laughing and floored by his tricks.
Blake Entertainment provided a DJ and photo booth; both were big hits with guests.
My bridesmaids wore floor-length dresses in dusky pink.
I wore a designer dress from Avenue 51 Bridal, which I adored!
Steve and my son Jacob wore ivory waistcoats, while the groomsmen wore grey and pink ties.
29 REAL WEDDINGS
We dotted around smaller vases full of flowers, along with fairylights and balloons to bring everything together.
I was so happy throughout the wedding; I was on cloud nine and didn’t want the day to end!
Steve was very nervous about the speech, but he relaxed once that was out of the way.
Seeing each other down the aisle was the most special part of the day! Having all our loved ones there on the day was just amazing.
My son Jacob was emotional due to being so happy and was in tears after the ceremony. He had been so excited leading up to the day that Steve would become his legal stepdad.
We bought a new caravan last year as we love going away to the New Forest, so this seemed the most fitting thing to do for our honeymoon. We just spent a long weekend at our favourite campsite eating fantastic food from the butchers, walking the dog and relaxing!

True love
Highcliffe Castle provided a stunning backdrop to Tom and Katherine’s wedding Images courtesy of White Chalet Studio and Photography by Chantel
34
These lovebirds first met at school and have been together ever since. Tom proposed to Katherine during the Jubilee weekend on a trip to Evershot. She says, “We went for a walk in deer park when he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!”
Here the bride shares details about their special day…
SETTING THE SCENE
When planning their special day, the couple wanted a timeless and elegant wedding to remember for years to come – they achieved just that.
Built-in the 1830s, Highcliffe Castle is a stunning property known for its stunning architecture, cliff-top location and peaceful atmosphere. So, it was no surprise that the pair fell in love with the setting when they drove down the winding driveway and saw the big stained glass windows. The bride used to work for Merlins Catering, so she had waitressed at a wedding there before and knew the castle was stunning. It’s right on the coast and the perfect spot for some beach shots.
After getting ready, the bride was driven to Highcliffe Castle with her dad in a classic Jaguar Mark V, while the bridal party was taken by a friend in his VW Campervan.
The ceremony was beautiful, with guests eagerly waiting for the bride to walk down the aisle. As Katherine took her first step, she walked towards their next chapter with Tom proudly and lovingly waiting for his bride. Katherine’s childhood piano teacher played during the ceremony and wedding breakfast, which added so much to the atmosphere and made the day even more memorable.
A mirror decorated with greenery and white roses made up the table plan, with each table name held in place with personalised wax stamps. Natural dried flowers attached to little brown tags were used for the place names, while guests received wildflower seeds for favours.
The centrepieces were large candelabras with greenery and white flowers. The added height elevated the room and drew attention to the lovely grand space with a stained glassed window. All along the middle were floating candles, and at the end of the rows were lanterns with large candles inside. Fairylights hanging from the ceiling with a disco ball and spotlights added a magical atmosphere to the day.
A pizza van kept the guests happy, serving numerous flavours to ensure no one went hungry. Guests also enjoyed the twotiered cake with a vanilla and salted caramel tier, while the other was white chocolate and raspberry. There were also cupcakes in different shades of green to tie into the colour scheme.
LOOKING THE PART
The stunning bride wore a Sophia Tolli gown called Emma, a bardot classic fit-and-flare dress. She accessorised this with a cathedral-length veil and her nan’s necklace for something borrowed. She says, “It was exciting to get into my dress, having had my hair and make-up done. My mum did up the buttons on my gown and I felt emotional at this point that after 12 years together, we were finally getting married today.” The bride had a classic and timeless bouquet of cream roses with greenery and gypsophila. She’s also planning to have the blooms preserved in resin and is excited to see the results.
Tom wore a herringbone tweed three-piece suit in navy. His groomsman wore the same, but Tom wore a beige waistcoat with a navy tie to stand out. The bridesmaids were in elegant sage green and dusty blue dresses in chiffon.
35 REAL WEDDINGS
TIME TO CELEBRATE
The pair hired a band called We Are Robot to keep guests entertained. They were amazing and had everyone up on the dancefloor all night. They played various hits from all different eras, so it catered for everyone. Tom and Katherine had been to see them before the wedding, so they knew the band would be a big hit at the wedding. They also had an open-air photobooth and audio guestbook, which went down well, and guests got photos all night.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
Everything came together beautifully on the day and was perfect from start to finish. The couple loved having all their loved ones together; seeing everyone chatting and having fun was so special. The bride says, “We took lots of moments just the two of us to take everything in, which was very special. We were unsure whether or not Tom’s dad would be able to attend the wedding due to an illnessbut he not only attended the ceremony as we were hoping but stayed the whole day and into the evening.” The maid-of-honour Emily went above and beyond to help with the wedding process, not just in the lead-up to the wedding with the hen do’s and helping with prep but being Katherine’s right-hand woman on the day. She helped curl the bride’s hair, checked in on her grandparents, helped her down to the beach for photos and much more!
The lovebird’s little furbaby Digby the cockapoo appeared on the day, both for the bridal prep in the morning and after the ceremony.
The speeches were amazing, and everyone absolutely nailed them! The bride’s dad had everyone in hysterics as he had chopped down a tree branch on the field between the two schools the pair used to meet under at lunchtime. Tom’s speech was also excellent, and he held the room before his brother/best man’s speech, whose dry sense of humour had people falling out of their chairs in laughter like they were in a stand-up comedy room.
HONEYMOON
After all the wedding planning and the main event, it was time to jet off for a romantic honeymoon to celebrate as newlyweds. What location could be better than two weeks in Mexico? The bride says, “It was nice that we didn’t rush off straight away; we had a barbecue at my parents’ house with lots of people the day after the wedding before spending Monday packing and getting ready to go early Tuesday. We stayed in a relaxing hotel with eight a la carte restaurants and 24 bars, which kept us going! We went on many excursions, including a boat trip to a national park, an adventure park of ziplines, buggies, rafting and underground caves – the highlight had to be snorkelling with turtles!”

DREAM
Woodlands Lodge Hotel provided the ideal location for Chris and Netty’s beautiful wedding Images courtesy of Faye’s Photos
These lovebirds first met through a mutual friend but didn’t go on a date until a few years later to the New Forest. They enjoyed some time at Lepe Beach, followed by a walk with ice cream before dinner. They shared many ideals, including an interest in classic vehicles as Chris is a Volkswagen owner while Netty has an affinity with Minis. Initially, Chris planned to get down on one knee on a beautiful
day within the grounds of Tintern Abbey, but he couldn’t find the right moment and ended up popping the question on holiday. After a coffee, the pair strolled to the water’s edge to enjoy the beautiful scenery while listening to the chorus of grey seals. With no time like the present, Chris proposed against the dramatic backdrop. Here he shares details about their special day...
41 REAL WEDDINGS
Our aim was to creatte an intimate wedding that reflected the season.
We wanted to remain close to home as that means we can return to the venue to enjoy it more informally, reminisce and share our memories of the day.
The team at Woodlands Lodge Hotel were lovely, accommodating and supportive – they made the planning process less stressful.
The venue’s gardens are particularly lovely in the summer – we were lucky to enjoy some wonderful sunshine.
Wooden frame boxes filled with local fallen flora made up our stunning centrepieces.
42
Guests received sweets, miniature bottles of alcohol and wildflower seeds for favours.
We left the flower selection to our expert florist, who did an excellent job selecting florals to match our autumnal colour scheme.
A local baker created our wedding cake with icing to resemble bark and autumnal falling leaves cascading down the side. Our cake topper reflected Netty’s love of cats.
As classic car lovers, there were multiple options for transport on the day. Netty has always had a soft spot for a Moggy, and it was an immediate ‘yes’ when we saw this beauty.
The Hotel provided all the catering, and guests enjoyed a set menu with tasty dishes for the wedding breakfast.
For Netty’s something borrowed, she wore the headpiece from her mum’s wedding.
REAL WEDDINGS 43
We used small branches with moss and heather for the place names to reflect the New Forest.
My mum has Alzheimer’s, so it was essential to make these memories with her presence while we could. We hope she’ll recognise the venue to relive those memories together.
Aside from the thrill of becoming husband and wife, we both enjoyed a slow-paced drive through the forest while residents offered their best wishes as we drove by.
Sharing the day with family and friends made our wedding extra special – what more do you need?

The Bugle is a picturesque location for memorable weddings overlooking the Royal Pier. With its beautiful décor, showstopping chandelier and large windows, this venue was perfect for this high-end shoot coordinated by Sabrina Buck at Love Is in The Hair
By Sabrina.
The Bridal Mill provided three stunning gowns for model Charlotte who looked incredible. One dress was simple but chic; another was playful, and a showstopper ended the night with a bang. Sabrina says, “We had fun with this shoot by laying Charlotte on chairs, putting her in the venue’s bath and playing on the stairs. It was fantastic and, at moments, gave us Chanel vibes!”

ALL IN THE DETAIL
Our experts share venue styling inspiration to help couples plan their dream wedding
Venue styling is essential to any wedding as it sets the tone for your day while matching your colour scheme and vibe. A simple space can be transformed into your dream location with just a bit of magic and help from the experts. Once your budget, theme and venue are confirmed, book a venue stylist as soon as possible to help guide you through the experience and answer any worries or concerns. We’ve hand-selected companies to share their top tips for styling the perfect wedding while incorporating the time of year.
SPRING HAZE
Kate says, “Keep your main colour palette simple as spring flowers will add a pop of colour, or go modern with a metallic accent colour. Add the wow factor with statement pieces such as blossom trees, which can be repurposed after the ceremony.”
Caroline says, “Embrace the season’s freshness by opting for soft pastel hues with one or two statement pieces, such as a large foliage-based arch, to welcome your guests and as a backdrop throughout the day. Greenery and foliage will add texture and create a garden-like atmosphere.”
Caroline says, “Spring is the perfect season to fill the air with delightful scents, using room fragrances or incorporating scented candles into your wedding décor. Consider using lavender, jasmine or rosemary for a fragrant but soothing ambience.”
Anna says, “Embrace the pastel tones of the seasonal florals in the floral arrangements, table decorations, invitations and props. Transform the venue with rustic crates, milk churns or floral China teacups as an alternative to champagne flutes.”
Anna says, “We love low trestle tables with gorgeous vintage rugs and comfy cushions as an alternative to a formal wedding breakfast. Enjoy this unconventional and intimate setting by playing around with the colours.”
Rebecca says, “Pastel tones are the season's colours and will be the most sustainable of stems. My go-to is hand-dipped candles such as Ester & Erik in varying hues that can elevate a table setting by adding height. Add napkins and glassware to complement the colour palette.”
Rebecca says, “ This time of year is the perfect opportunity to introduce jam jar or bottle designs as pockets of flowers look so pretty throughout a long table setting or on a wood slice in the centre of a round table. Add a cheesecloth runner in a complementary tone, and you have a beautifully romantic scene.”

Kate says, “Flowers wilt quicker in the heat, but you can prevent this and hay fever with truly beautiful faux arrangements. Consider keeping your wedding sustainable with linen napkins and a handwritten mirror table plan is a must.”
Caroline says, “Summer lends itself towards soft pastels to evoke a sense of romance, or more vibrant colours such as electric pink, red, yellow, orange and cobalt blue. Balance the colours with beautiful neutral tones so it's not overwhelming. White is also a popular choice for a crisp and clean aesthetic.”
Anne says, “Incorporate as much of your wedding outside as possible for a relaxed summer vibe. Add a boho-shaded lounge area for your guests to escape the heat and rest their dancing feet. It's also great for photo opportunities and to spend time together away from the crowd.”
Anne says, “Why not add lawn games for your guest to enjoy while taking advantage of the sun for your outdoor photos? Consider croquet, Jenga, Connect 4, lawn bowls and limbo. Outdoor games bring fun and laughter to all guests while uniting everyone. You can relax and enjoy your day knowing guests are having a great time.”
Rebecca says, “Summer brings a host of taller florals perfect for creating pockets of interest in different areas of the venue. Delphiniums, larkspur, hollyhocks and lupins offer great height for flower meadows down an aisle or against interesting features. Remember that you can reuse your arrangements.
Rebecca says, “Summer is the ideal time for arches as you're more likely to have good weather and capture the shots you desire. Many venues or churches can have an arch, whether attached to the wall or freestanding. By introducing this feature, you're creating an area where guests can capture the perfect photo.”

The Old Milking Parlour at Cavokay House Beautiful rustic wedding venue Henstridge, Somerset, BA8 0TQ
Kate says, “Embrace the darker night and warm rich colour pallets while bringing in a mixture of textiles to add depth. Natural, earthy colours such as stone, champagne and rust are coming through for weddings with dark green still making an appearance. It’s all about deep purple for 2024.”
Anne says, “It's the season of fallen leaves, with deep red, orange, brown, copper and gold shades. Wooden furniture will elevate the natural autumnal colours with unlimited tones, textures, shades and grains. Reclaimed wooden trestle tables are impressive coupled with beautifully worn vintage mix-and-match chairs that can accentuate nature’s pallet.”
Caroline says, “Carry the vibrancy of nature this time of year through your design with an eclectic mix of colours. You can bring in the season’s richness by layering different textures, such as velvet, within your table place settings or even as the ribbons bind your bouquets. Use elegant chandeliers, fairylights, candles and lanterns to create a romantic atmosphere as the sun sets.”
Rebecca says, “Festoon lighting, fire pits and lanterns can create a great outdoor feature at a minimal hire cost, ensuring guests can stay out and use other parts of the venue. An apple crate of throws can also ensure a cosy night by the fire pit.”
Anne says, “The Halloween season offers the perfect opportunity for an alternative, edgy and dramatic look. There can be something ominous about vintage apothecary bottles. Resembling potion bottles are great for flower displays or as small props and decorations. With dripping candles, black linens and moody florals, you can forget tradition and give your guests a spooktacular day.”

Rebecca says, “Although florals are abundant, foliage is also a great way of styling a space over the winter. I try to create layers of interest so you don’t have a flat horizon. A floating foliage installation is fairly cost-effective and can create an incredible feature above the dancefloor. Add a few fairylights, and you have a magical design.”
Kate says, “Think about candlelight as it gets dark around 3 pm. While a taper candle looks amazing when first lit, they get shorter and black wax is all too common. So go LED to keep that wow factor for your evening guests too. Add a neon sign to add a pop of light to brighten up a dark corner.”
Caroline says, “Incorporate romantic dusty pinks to add elegance, slate grey for a sophisticated modern look or deep jewel tones for added depth to the venue. Use accents of gold to add a touch of luxury or shimmering silvers for a slightly cooler tone. Use an abundance of candles in fireplaces, on the tables, aisle, walkways, windows and around floral displays or signage.”
www.samburgephotography.co.uk
Anne says, “Add a lounge area with comfy sofas, armchairs, rugs and blankets to let guests relax with a blanket and a warm drink. Offer guests the option of hot chocolate, mulled wine or cider to enjoy and embrace the festivities.”
Rebecca says, “Reds are everywhere seasonally, but it doesn’t mean your wedding needs to look like a Christmas wonderland. Burgundy tones can be softened with light pink metallic tones to create a warmer feel this time of year. Muted gold accents for votives and candle holders are great for creating elegant tablescapes to wow your guests.”

BEAUTY NEWS 69
Being Sophie
Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin
Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.
What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?
The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.
What have you been up to since you left the show?
I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.
You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?
Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.
Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?
I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being
70
© James Rudland
a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!
How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?
I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.
Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?
I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.
For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?
As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the
whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.
Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!
Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?
I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.
What make-up products can’t you live without?
Cream contours and eyebrow gel!
What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?
At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

LUSCIOUS LOCKS
I’m wearing an off-the-shoulder dress for our wedding and wanted to know what hairstyle would work best. What would you suggest?
An off-the-shoulder dress is one of the easiest necklines to work with when planning a hairstyle, as you don’t need to rule any style out. The hard part is then narrowing down the options.
Look at the gown’s details to help. A sleek bun will be perfect if you have a lot of lace, detailing or embellishment. If your gown is more classic with satin or sheen material, wearing your hair down with a wave looks fantastic. Or, if your dress has a chicfitted style, go for a modern twist or Kim Kardashian high bun. Consider how you wear your hair usually, any accessories you’ll be wearing and your overall wedding theme. Have a hair trial to discuss all these considerations and styles to find the perfect look.

STYLED TO PERFECTION
What style of dress will give me a timeless look for my manor house wedding?
When you start scrolling through Instagram for wedding dresses, you’ll be bombarded with all types of gowns, including celebrity styles. While celebrities often choose dresses on the cutting edge of fashion, many looks will be out of style by next season. Diana’s dress was iconic with many details that make it easily identifiable as 80’s fashion – think big puffy shoulders and V-shaped waistline.
Choose dress shapes that have proven to withstand the test of time. A-line, ballgown, or sheath silhouettes have been around for centuries and stay in style. Invest in high-quality fabrics that drape beautifully. Timeless fabrics like chiffon, satin and lace are classic. If you choose a style or fabric that’s a current trend, then the chances are that the fad will die off at some point. Instead, opt for simplicity, clean lines and minimal embellishments. If you want to add an edgy look, do it with accessories such as statement earrings, a bow veil or even a detachable overskirt.
Another way forward would be to have two dresses! You could start with a more traditional look for the ceremony before changing to a more ‘on-trend’ evening dress or a bridal mini. We’ve just received the most amazing short bridal cocktail gowns where you can show a bit of leg, show off fabulous shoes and hit the dancefloor without worrying about your train.

ARRIVING IN STYLE
We’re having a vintage-themed celebration and want to incorporate this into our transport. Do you have any ideas on how we can do this?
There are many ways to incorporate transport into your vintage-themed wedding. Whatever your dream vehicle, there are many options to help make a stunning entrance to your vintage wedding that will create a fantastic statement – just dare to be different.
At Radiant Retro Rides, we have a truly remarkable example of the iconic VW campervan. But you could also check out our latest addition.

My mum wears trousers daily but feels like she must wear a dress on my wedding day. What would you suggest?
A wedding is an extraordinary occasion for the wedding party, especially when getting the outfit right for mother-of-the-brides.
Here at Charisma, we pride ourselves on giving a one-to-one personal service to assist our ladies through trying different styles and outfits. We suggest coming out of their comfort zone, away from their usual style, to try something different to get that wow factor. Some customers wish to have their legs covered and feel more comfortable in a trouser suit, which is great, but try a tea-length style dress such as the Condici Balmoral with its three-quarter length soft and feminine look, which can be dressed up with a fantastic hatinator for a church wedding or down with a simple flower for more relaxed weddings.
We’ve had so many customer reviews telling us how they came into our boutique with style in mind but went out with something different and always had terrific comments on the day.

For a real head turner, how about a classic 1968 Vespa Piaggio moped in white, with Union Jack painted decor? Both are unique additions to any vintage-themed celebration.
We love all vintage cars, and there are so many to choose from. A 1950s Jeep is a classic option for this style as well as an Austin, which is possibly a vehicle we’ll look at one day, as it matches our family name and is an excellent option for weddings.

IT’S A BLING THING
What advice can you share when it comes to creating bespoke wedding jewellery?
Know your style, as the pieces will be with you for a long time! Do you want a sleek contemporary look, something more romantic and traditional or an art deco style – there are many design styles available. Consider your precious metal as you can have white and yellow gold in the same carat weight, while platinum has always been considered the purest of metals and rose gold has made a big comeback.
Next, think about the carat size in mind for your gemstones. You may want the most dazzling or clearest possible diamond despite the carat count. Buy a diamond just shy of desirable half and whole-carat weights to save money. Ensure you get measured correctly, as you don’t want a ring too tight or large, as you’ll risk losing it.
Consider how your engagement ring and wedding band will look together, especially if you’ve opted for an unusual engagement ring. Most of us will have a budget in mind for our rings, but remember it will be a forever purchase. Sometimes it’s worth going a little further to achieve the rings of your dreams.

BAKING UP SOME LOVE
We want our wedding to be as sustainable as possible; what should we consider regarding our cake?
When it comes to ordering your wedding cake, there are several things you can consider to make your wedding as sustainable as possible.
Avoid wastage by dropping your guest list for dessert by 20 per cent, as most people won’t have both dessert and cake – this helps avoid too much food and help with your budget.
Pick a supplier who uses only ethically-sourced organic ingredients and plastic-free products for the cakes and across their kitchen, just like us at Olivia Bakes. We do this to ensure your wedding cake is made with sustainable ingredients and is as guilt-free as delicious!
Work with a local company that will supply and deliver the bake if possible. We travel up to an hour from our kitchen and make all our deliveries with an electric car, which helps keep our carbon footprint low. Find a company that works with small, local suppliers to source ingredients and other supplies, such as flowers and cake toppers!

A PASSION FOR FASHION
My bridesmaids are all different shapes and sizes, and I want to ensure everyone feels comfortable on the wedding day. What advice can you share?
Bridesmaids all have different preferences as everyone has different facial structures and body shapes. Plus, we’re also our own biggest critics. Get your best girls to look at different styles to find their perfect fit in your chosen colour to keep everyone happy. Try to shop at one location to hopefully receive a discount if several gowns are needed. I know colours suit different skin tones, but the bridesmaids should support the bride on her big day.

NOW THAT’S
ENTERTAINMENT
Keep your guests amused with these talented entertainers
Whenit comes to creating memorable nuptials, it’s vital to keep guests entertained throughout the day from when you walk down the aisle to dancing the night away. With so many fantastic companies out there, we’ve selected some of very best entertainers to help provide inspiration.
TAKING FLIGHT
CSR Falconry specialises in providing unforgettable experiences with birds of prey for your wedding day. The team offers wedding ring delivery, static displays to greet guests and opportunities to handle these truly beautiful birds.
Make your special day unique and magical by having your wedding rings delivered by one of the barn owls, who will fly down the aisle to deliver your rings safely. The owl will return to the falconer, and your ceremony will continue. After the vows, the special guests will be available afterwards for photographs and to meet the rest of your wedding party.
The team can offer tailor-made packages to make your day truly special; this could include a variety of other owls to be available to meet guests, handling opportunities and displays.
Owner Clare Ryder started training birds of prey at nine after her parents opened a falconry centre. Fast forward, Clare started CSR Falconry with help from her husband Paul and their daughters, who are all involved with the birds and assist at special events. All owls are family to Clare, who has been hand-rearing them from their very first weeks. The health and wellbeing of the birds are paramount to the team and always will be.

LET THE BEAT DROP
Iggy Wedding DJ creates a fun, relaxed and happy atmosphere at weddings, ensuring everyone feels included and has a good time.
Some couples are surprised owner Iggy Davis offers more than just the evening reception music. If you book his full-day service, the entertainer can play background music as the guests arrive at the ceremony using a compact yet powerful PA, which will blend in with the décor and be discrete. Processional music is arguably the most important piece of the day, so seamless timing is everything. Rather than the noise of cutlery on plates during the wedding
breakfast, the entertainer can play background music, make announcements, introduce the speeches and make guests feel involved in many different ways.
End the night on a high with all your friends and family on the dancefloor; it’s the perfect way to finish such a memorable occasion.
Iggy offers a money-back guaranteeto give nearlyweds the confidence and peace of mind that he’s fully committed to doing the best job possible. He has never had anyone ask for their money back in more than ten years.

The international best-selling Orient Bambino Watch Series now includes a long-awaited 38mm diameter case perfect for grooms-to-be.
The Classic and Simple Style Series, known as Orient Bambino by dedicated fans, features traditional design features such as a convex dial and domed glass. The series has been a consistent best-seller over the last decade in 70 countries around the world. Until now, they featured mostly 40.5-mm case diameters, however, these latest models feature a more compact 38-mm case.
The beautiful finish can be admired through the see-through back, and the domed glass and convex dial create a vintage feel. The dial is available in beige as well as black and white, which complements the simple design perfectly.

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.
Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

Dressed TO IMPRESS
The team at Colour Me Beautiful share their fashion advice for the groom-to-be
Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:
CHOOSING A STYLE
There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.
Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.
Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.
Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.
Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.
Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.
HIRING
Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance
and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.
Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.
ACCESSORIES
The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.
Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.
Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.
Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.
Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.
A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.
If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!
Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.
Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf.
Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.
Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.
GROOMING
Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

HONEYMOON NEWS 91
MY EVERYTHINGMy first, my last,
Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.
AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?
A ROOM WITH A VIEW
I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.
UNDERWATER LIFE
Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene

Rachel Westall experienced five-star, desert island luxury at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.
indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.
A FOODIES’ PARADISE
Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.
Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.
FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL
Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...
TRUE ROMANCE
It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I
ONCE IN A LIFETIME
Bond. The name’s Bond. No this isn’t a new film location of an upcoming James Bond movie, it’s The Muraka - a first-of-its-kind, luxury two-level residence with a master bedroom submerged some 16ft below sea level in the Indian Ocean. If money’s no problem, then honeymoon like Paris Hilton and go for it!
There’s so much more to say, but I’ll leave you to find out the rest for yourselves. Do indulge, it’s worth it. To book, visit the website: www.conradmaldives.com
HONEYMOON REVIEW 93
HAVEN A Celtic
Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland
WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!
Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.
A SPOT OF R&R
The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.
If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!
We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...
This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.
As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!
The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.
HEARTY FARE
The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.
This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.
Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.
I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.
When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.
I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.
For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.
If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.

Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.
I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.
REST YOUR HEAD
With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.
All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.
When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.
THE ULTIMATE SPA SESSION
Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to
snuggle up.
The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.
I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.
Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.
