Here comes the sun

Hellolovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your Herts and Beds Wedding!

I hope you’ve all been enjoying spring. There’s something so refreshing about this time of year; it’s all about fresh starts and new beginnings. I’m looking forward to the warming weather and longer days as we slowly creep towards summer. There’s nothing I love more than venturing outdoors; I’m talking picnic dates, barbecues with loved ones, forest walks with the dogs and beach days with friends.

Summer is a wonderful time to tie the knot, not just because of the glorious sunshine – although that’s a huge perk! Thanks to the longer days, you’ll be able to have a later ceremony with plenty of time for your photographer to capture memorable shots. Imagine roasting marshmallows with loved ones around fire pits, enjoying outdoor games on the lawns or eating from food trucks. Thanks to the more consistent weather, the opportunities are endless.

Planning a wedding is an exciting experience where you can create a dream-worthy day to celebrate your love and commitments. This issue is packed with local suppliers who would be honoured to be a part of your magical day. They’ll work with you to offer advice and help bring your visions to life.

If you’re stuck with wedding planning and need inspiration, don’t forget to check out our beautiful weddings and styled shoots. I’m talking showstopping venues, gorgeous styling, oh-so-beautiful blooms and wow-factor touches.

That’s all from me; happy planning!

I’ve fallen head-over-heels for this stunning shoot at Turvey House, which features luxurious styling and modern touches.

Tie the knot in these stunning East Hertfordshire venues

FANHAMS HALL

01920 460 511 | www.exclusive.co.uk/fanhams-hall

There’s a surprise around every corner at Fanhams Hall, which is the perfect venue for weddings. The house never stops being a feast for the senses with a Medieval hall, Jacobean mansion, stunning surroundings and 21st-century mod cons all rolled into one.

The grounds are a magical outdoor oasis featuring Japanese gardens complete with a tea house, regal water fountains, a wisteria walkway, woodlands and manicured formal gardens. The venue has many showstopping wedding spaces to pick from. The Long Gallery is located up a grand wooden staircase and can host 120 people for the vows. Wood-panelled walls, high ceilings, original chandeliers and large bridge windows overlook the stunning gardens. Alternatively, The Hertford & Ware can accommodate 130 and is a blank canvas space that matches any wedding theme. The mid-century Japanese-inspired space provides a modern touch with panoramic views, natural lighting and wooden windows. Guests can transform their wedding day into a fairytale by saying “I do” amidst the trees, bridges and blossoms

with 120 loved ones. Exchange vows on the gazebo lawn and formal gardens surrounded by clipped hedges and a trickling water fountain. For something a little different, jump into an ethereal wonderland in the Japanese gardens and marry under the veranda of the tea house before crossing the bridge to discover secret spaces for photos.

Continue the celebrations in The Great Hall with 120 seated guests and 200 in the evenings. The space provides a big fanfare with a beamed ceiling, stone-framed windows, a feature fire place, intricate wood carvings and a harlequin-tiled room at the back that opens out onto the gardens. Or opt for the Lakeside Pavilion with 130 guests for wedding breakfasts or 200 for evening celebrations. Its Japanese-style theme is tranquil, bright and breezy – it feels almost like a zen gateway with nothing but the sound of the fountain on the lake. There’s even a private veranda outside so guests can make the most of the sun when it shines. After celebrating all day, guests can retreat to the on-site rooms for a peaceful sleep.

WARE PRIORY

01920 460 316 | www.warepriory.co.uk

Situated on seven acres of picturesque gardens, Ware Priory is a traditional Grade I listed building with contemporary touches and architecture dating back to Medieval times. The main Ware Priory building has lots of character and historical features, whereas Fletcher’s Lea offers a more contemporary feel. The riverside grounds provide the perfect backdrop to weddings and photography. Here couples will find river life of narrowboats, swans, geese and ducks. The back lawns are well kept and are a great location for drinks receptions and team-building games, while the wisteria archway offers a beautiful space for those iconic confetti pictures. Situated in what were the cloisters of the original Friary, the Priory Hall can accommodate ceremonies with 100 loved ones. With stained glass windows and a series of French windows that open onto the riverside gardens, the hall is the perfect destination for the

“I dos” and receptions with 80 people. Alternatively, The Conservatory offers a bright and spacious interior with space to accommodate 100 people for the vows. The area was completely rebuilt during extensive renovations in the mid-1990s and is ideal for wedding breakfasts with 120 people or receptions with 140. The Hadsley Room, part of the Lady Suite, dates from the 15th-century and boasts a superb example of a crown post roof. The large refectory table used by the registrar to conduct ceremonies dates back to the 14th-century and is believed to be from the original Friary. The room is named after Robert Hadsley, who purchased the Priory in 1685, and his family owned the estate for the best part of 200 years. The location is now popular for intimate weddings with 40 guests for ceremonies and receptions. Or why not exchange vows in the Riverside Suite with 200 nearest and dearest? Situated within Fletcher’s Lea, the larger suite can host wedding receptions with up to 160 guests for dining and 220 for buffet settings. The standalone building has all the catering and bar facilities needed.

MANOR OF GROVES HOTEL  01279 600777 | www.manorofgroves.com

Located on 150 acres of stunning grounds, the Manor of Groves Hotel is a stunning venue where Georgian splendour meets a modern twist. The neo-classical property features traditional white pillars and tall glass windows that provide showstopping views of the 18-hole golf course and beautifully kept gardens that are the ideal settings for wedding photography. The original manor house has been extended into an additional wing housing many of the bedrooms, and the exterior has been designed in keeping with the traditional property. Ceremonies and receptions can take place in several spaces. The Library Suite and

Drawing Room are perfect for intimate weddings, while the Colonnade Suite can hold up to 100 guests for the vows and wedding breakfasts, plus 150 for evening receptions. The Manor Suite is perfect for grand events and can host 400 people for ceremonies and 100 after the vows – it’s home to a private Japanese-style garden that’s perfect for photographs. The property also offers two charming gazebos within the grounds for outside ceremonies. The venue offers a variety of packages, many including menu tastings ahead of weddings and a complimentary night’s stay for newlyweds on their wedding night.

The venue doesn’t have a ceremony license, but the 12th-century church is available for blessings with permission of the Churches Conservation Trust. Celebrant-led ceremonies occur in the 18th-century barn at Edworth Manor, a genuinely rustic space that’s one of the largest in the area with

THE PERFECT DAY

Amy and Gregg had a festival-styled wedding surrounded by loved ones

Images courtesy of Angels With Dirty Faces Photography

These lovebirds first met on Bumble and instantly clicked on their first date – it was like they’d known each other for years. After creating many amazing memories together, it was time to take the next step in their relationship. Gregg proposed during a beautiful sunset on a beach in Cyprus, which was a complete surprise for Amy. She says, “I did nearly ruin it by unknowingly having the ring box in my hand wrapped in a pair of shorts at one point when we were packing!”

Here Amy shares details about their special day…

REAL WEDDINGS 29

Our main aim was to throw a bloody good party!

Tewin Country Weddings was a chilled-out venue that allowed us to create our dream day. It had a very festival feel, which matched our vision.

We legally had to get married at a registry office, but we held an outdoor blessing at the venue with guests sitting on hay bales.

Loved ones could pick food from four different food vans, including pizza, hog roast, burgers and fried chicken.

Guests enjoyed brownies, cheese, a sweet cart and a wedding cake for dessert.

I wore a Stella York dress, which I knew was the one as soon as I tried it – a veil and pearl jewellery finished my look.

bridesmaids looked beautiful in sage green dresses. We had an musician playing an acoustic guitar during the afternoon.

The rodeo bull and bungee run was a massive hit with loved ones. A saxophonist and DJ entertained guests in the evening. The

We had my horse come and visit for a photo shoot.

My cousin carried out the ceremony, and he did a surprise song at the end! He got everyone to sing Angels by Robbie Williams but changed the words to ‘I’m Loving Amy and Gregg’.

Everyone having fun and being very relaxed stood out to us.

Our wedding organiser Claire made everything perfect on the day.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG

Matthew and Genna’s stunning wedding featured a dusty blue and white colour scheme

Images courtesy of Jeff Oliver Photography

Matthew and Genna first met with friends while climbing Cader Idris mountain in Snowdonia National Park. The weather that day was terrible and many climbers were turning around to going back down the mountain, but both groups were determined to reach the top and decided to group up for safety reasons. Genna comments, “I hadn’t noticed Matt too much romantically until we had accomplished the mountain and was drying off in the tea rooms at the bottom. He gave out this amazing smile with dimples on each cheek. Matt became fond of me when I gave him some spare sandwiches on top of the mountain. It’s true; food is a way to a man’s heart.” The pair exchanged Instagram accounts and went their separate ways. Three months later, they met up for a date and the rest is history!

Matthew planned a special easter egg hunt in the garden for Genna and their daughter, who was four months old at the time. He originally wanted to propose during a breakaway in the Cotswold, but that was cancelled due to the Covid lockdown. Genna recalls, “It was honestly adorable, so heartfelt and personal. Matt had put so much effort into writing cute place cards of our special moments and memories over the past few years –he even made his very own Cader Idris mountain with chocolate sheep around." Matt got done on one knee and was shaking with nerves, but it's a moment they will treasure forever. Here Genna shares details about their special day…

SETTING THE SCENE

Now living in Hertfordshire, the couple drove through Baldock quite a lot and Genna was always drawn to the beautiful St Mary's Parish Church. She says, “The spire and the entrance arch always caught my eye – everything about it was beautiful. I felt a sense of warmth and community in a church as I was brought up as a Christian in a Catholic education. I really wanted the ceremony to be special and traditional.” She adds, “Reverend Andrew was so friendly, we connected with him so well and he made our wedding day relaxed and joyful.”

The ceremony was special from start to finish, and the pair tied the knot surrounded by loved ones. The bride’s grandma read a lovely blessing, which was so personal and tailored to the nearlyweds. While they signed the marriage register, a friend beautifully sang Can’t Help Falling In Love by Elvis Presley to add to the romantic atmosphere. After exchanging vows, the church bells rang for all to hear and gave the bride goosebumps.

Letchworth Golf Club was the perfect location for the reception, and the sun was sunning down on the newlyweds. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, the venue is a hidden gem with stunning views overlooking the golf course. The venue’s manager was so attentive and took the stress of wedding planning away to allow the pair to enjoy the experience fully. The bride says, “We loved the terrace that overlooked the beautiful grounds, especially as we could have the French doors open to allow the outside in. The food was delicious, and the presentation was spot on! We opted for a hot buffet to achieve a really relaxed atmosphere and allowed guests to sit anywhere.”

The table centrepieces were kept simple, with candle holders wrapped in artificial eucalyptus for the perfect finishing touch. The photobooth and sweets area featured LOVE light-up letters to add the wow factor.

LOOKING THE PART

The bride looked stunning in a Pronovias dress called Alcycone, a mermaid style with a plunging V-neckline and stunning lace. The illusion straps and bodice left the bride feeling amazing. She accessorised her look with a cathedral-style veil with lace trim and

REAL WEDDINGS 35

a family heirloom pearl necklace, bracelet and earrings. The groom looked dapper in a lovely three-piece Donegal tweed suit with a dusty blue satin slim tie and pocket square. He looked slightly different than his groomsmen with his engraved tie holder, cufflinks and buttonhole.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

The bride felt calm and excited on the wedding morning, trying to soak in every moment as she knew the day would fly by. The emotions and nerves kicked in just before she walked down the aisle. Genna says, “It was such a lovely feeling to devote my all to Matt during the ceremony, as I love him so much! It was amazing having everyone we loved around us supporting and cheering us on. I remember Matt being extremely nervous for his speech, which he absolutely smashed, and anxious for the first dance.”

A funny part of the day was that the bride was slightly late to enter the church as one of my bridesmaids got lost on the way, the bride forgot to put her underskirt on and nearly left her bouquet behind.

HONEYMOON

After the perfect wedding, the couple went on a two-night trip together before a two-week honeymoon with their daughter on the Amalfi coast a week later. Genna says, “The honeymoon was a dream and went so smoothly, considering we had our two-year-old. We really enjoyed having her with us and sharing the experiences of Italy. The places we visited, food, gelato and prosecco were to die for! It was such a child-friendly place, so our girl had a fuss made about her everywhere we went." The family stayed at the Grand Hotel Moon Valley on the Sorrento Coast, which had beautiful views of the mountains, sea and Mount Vesuvius. They used the train, local ferry and coaches to travel around and visit places such as Capri Island and Positano.

IS Naturecalling

Charlotte and Josh’s wedding at Shuttleworth House had a yellow and cornflower blue colour scheme

These lovebirds were studying for their A-levels when they first met. After getting the only A in the class, Josh helped Charlotte revise for their exams, where they discovered their shared love of being outdoors. Just like that, their love story began! Josh popped the question on a woodland walk hunting for fungi on their 10th anniversary while Charlotte was engrossed in taking pictures. Here the bride shares details about their special day...

39 REAL WEDDINGS

We love being outdoors with nature, so getting married amongst trees and flowers was a must!

We had a tree with the table names hanging from the branches for our wedding breakfast.

Felt animals and foliage inside different bottles made up the centrepieces. The bouquets were made from sunflowers, gypsophila, hydrangeas and wildflowers.
40

We wanted a more relaxed meal, so we had a family-sharing menu.

We had a live band called Mona Vale to entertain guests, who we’d highly recommend as they played a great range of songs. The band even learnt one of our favourite songs for the first dance.

Josh looked dapper in a tweed three-piece suit, while the groomsmen wore plain navy suits to allow him to stand out. I wore a Justin Alexander fit-and-flare style with flower details to match our nature theme.
41 REAL WEDDINGS
The bridesmaids wore cornflower blue dresses with floral detailing across the top.

We had a firework display as we started dating on the 5th of November.

The confetti throw, speeches, booging on the dancefloor and everyone singing along to the night’s final song were moments we will treasure forever.

We were so happy and couldn’t stop smiling – it was the best day of our lives!

A massive thank you to Kate Atalay Bespoke Hairstyling for not only stepping in after my original hairdresser cancelled the day before the wedding, but doing such an incredible job with all our hair.

Our photographer Lorna captured the day perfectly and made everyone feel at ease in front of the camera. She helped organise all the guests and get them moving along to the next part of the day.

Hall of fame

Adrian says, “This shot is full of emotion! It sums up the joy and love my couple had for each other. We discussed several key shots they wanted me to take, but this image was pure impulse. I saw the bench and perfect lighting, but left the posing to them.”

Adrian says, “A great wedding photo captures the couple’s personality and tells their story, whether that’s a candid moment that reveals their sense of humour or showcases their style. This gorgeous golden hour shot captures the essence of my couple and their relationship – I love it!”

Adrian says, “Lighting can make or break a photo. Skilled photographers know how to use natural and artificial lighting to their advantage. The right lighting can create depth, highlight important details and add drama to a scene. I was gifted the perfect combination of both here during this bridal party entrance.”

Erica says, “I adore looking for moments like these at weddings! You can see the energy, noise and fun a singing waiter brought to this wedding reception in one frame. Ultimately, it was not for every guest's liking.”

Erica says, “Not every moment at a wedding is full of happiness. This photo not only shows a woman missing her husband, but the importance of acknowledging those who are missed at weddings. This photo is special because it shows the connection I gain with clients and their families, allowing me to capture them when they are vulnerable and joyous.”

Erica says, “I gravitate towards children at weddings, and when I spotted this little guest’s expression during a church service, I had to capture it! I just loved the humour in the moment; storytelling shots like this are my favourite.”

Sarah says, “After their initial disappointment, this pair embraced the wet weather and weren’t afraid to venture outside in the rain for some photos on their beautiful day. The colourful lighting in the Garden Court at Hanbury Manor made this after-dark rainy shot even more magical.”

Sarah says, “This is one of my all-time favourite images, encapsulating the pure happiness of that just married feeling. I loved capturing this bridal party procession through Berkhamsted on a busy market day, led by these two joyful brides who were congratulated by everyone they passed.”

Sarah says, “I adore this natural moment where the bride and groom had to pause exchanging rings as they were overcome with emotions. It perfectly captured the day, which was full of love, laughter and happy tears.”

Nik says, “I love a girl gang picture! The bride's hair is so beautiful and complements her colour scheme. Candid shots are always my favourite; everyone is so genuinely happy and having the best time enjoying the wedding together.”

Nik says, “Confetti pictures are by far my favourite to take; I particularly love this image because it was early in my wedding photography career. I love the couple's story, their colour scheme, the amazing venue and how excited they both look – it really makes me smile.”

Nik says, “Young love at its finest; this is the cutest picture of these two newlyweds enjoying some fun during the cake cutting. This picture set the scene for their evening; it was very fun and laid back – these two had great energy and were so in love.”

Top tips for picture-perfect images!

THE PERFECT STYLE

When finding the perfect photographer, it’s important to research local companies online. Check out their website and social media pages for examples of their work. Photographers have different styles, from documentary, editorial, contemporary and traditional. Flick through portfolios to view different weddings and create a short list of favourite photographers as a starting point. It’s essential to find companies that stand out to you.

THE DREAM TEAM

Review previous clients' reviews to read all about their experience from start to finish. Remember your budget and theme to ensure the team can meet your expectations. Contact the supplier to discuss details about your wedding and any concerns to ensure they're the perfect fit. It’s also a good idea to ask to see their full galleries to see their work throughout weddings from start to finish, not just the highlights.

PRE-WEDDING SHOOTS

For those worrying about having their photos taken, a pre-wedding shoot is an excellent way to get used to being in front of the lens while getting to know your chosen photographer. Having a big lens pointed at you can be intimidating, especially as many of us have never had a photoshoot before. Once the gallery returns, you can look at what poses you love and which didn’t quite work.

ONE-ON-ONE

Meeting your photographer in person is critical, as you’ll spend most of the special day with them. If meeting in person isn’t an option, Facetime or Zoom are great alternatives. It also allows you to ask more questions and discuss your day in more detail. If your photographer has never visited your venue, meet for a show around so they can get ideas for different backdrops.

WHATEVER THE WEATHER

Ensure you have a backup plan for photographs indoors in case of any April showers. Photographers can capture stunning images no matter the weather, so embrace the rain with a funky pair of wellies and an umbrella for the ultimate photo shoot if you’re feeling brave.

CAPTURING MEMORIES

On the day itself, try not to focus too much on the photographer and relax – you’re in good hands. Trust the expert to blend into the background while snapping away to capture memorable moments with loved ones. You’ll look lovely on the images no matter what, so enjoy the day and let the photographer work their magic.

A LOVE LETTER TO YOUR SKIN

I recently attended a masterclass with Super Facialist’s resident skincare expert, Charlotte Connoley, which posed the question: do we really know our skin type? If like me your answer is somewhat hesitant, it may interest you to know that there’s an easy way to find out. Charlotte suggests simply splashing your face with water and leaving it for 20-25 minutes. If it feels prickly afterwards, you have sensitive skin; if the water’s gone, then it’s dry; if the skin is tight, it’s dehydrated; and if it feels perfectly comfortable you’re blessed with a normal skin type. Whatever you discover, Super Facialist has a range of products specifically tailored to each type, recognising this can change throughout the year. This allows you to affordably create your own individual skincare routine to support your skin throughout the seasons.

Having learned that my skin is dehydrated, I tried the divine Rosehip Hydrate Calming Creamy Cleanser (£9, www.lookfantastic.com) and my annoying dry patches have been banished!

SKIN DEEP

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with Angela Langford whose eponymous brand offers a wide range of skincare designed to make you feel great

The idea for Angela Langford as a brand started when Angela was working in a stressful, pressured, corporate job in Gibraltar, from which she was eventually made redundant. She knew she wasn’t meant for that world any longer, and set out to create her own business based on her passions. “I was travelling less, which meant I couldn’t easily get my favourite skincare from the UK anymore,” Angela says. “So, I started making my own products for personal use, with no intention of turning it into a career.” But, having discovered a love for the whole process, she did a lot of research and eventually decided to turn her new-found passion into a business, sharing her products with others. She went on to study cosmetic formulation in depth, which in turn opened up a completely new world for her.

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to Angela recently to find out more about the brand and its products, as well as how they can help you feel skin confident for your wedding day, complete with that gorgeous bridal glow.

possible I use glass jars and bottles, but this isn’t always compatible with the product. If a container is plastic, I use post-consumer recycled packaging. This is an area I work hard to constantly improve on, and over the years, I’ve made a great deal of progress.

Using high quality, concentrated products can help too, because you don’t need to purchase so often. Keeping your routine simple and using up what you do buy can also help.

What are your favourite skincare ingredients that you recommend we look out for?

This is a bit like being asked who your favourite child is, or in my case, favourite pet! It’s a tough one to answer, but I think oils rich in skin-loving omegas and essential fatty acids are vital for our skin’s health. Rosehip, chia seed, argan, and evening primrose are in a lot of my products and I always try to source organic versions.

I’m a huge fan of active plant ingredients too. My current favourites are electric daisy and sea buckthorn. The former has been referred to as nature’s botox and can help to smooth, firm and tighten our skin; whereas sea buckthorn is like a superfood for it. It has so many amazing benefits –it’s calming, soothing, repairing and can help with cell regeneration. Rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants, it’s a skincare powerhouse, which is why I use it in my best-selling face oil, Bloom & Glow.

People are becoming more conscious of what’s in their skincare products as well as how its produced. How can we ensure our beauty products are as harmless to the environment as they are good for our skin?

I’m a very small-scale producer and I make everything myself in small batches. This means, there’s very little wastage and the products aren’t stored for months on end in a warehouse. I also use organic ingredients wherever available as these are also better for the environment.

We’re primarily an online brand, so I don’t use any outer packaging, and this small change can help to make a positive difference. Where

What would you recommend as the best approach for a bride or groom concerned about sensitive skin in the run up to the big day? Don’t introduce a new product to your skincare routine too close to your big day. Also, avoid any treatments or introducing new make-up. If you have regular facials, that’s fine, but going for something different a week beforehand may upset your skin. If you’re having your make-up applied by a professional, make sure you discuss this with them during your trial and ask to use your own make-up products if you’re worried.

Can you suggest a skincare regime that will ensure skin is in tip-top condition, providing the perfect base for a W-day make-up artist? Cleanse every morning and evening. A double cleanse with a balm or

“My aim is to make people feel great about their skin no matter their age. When we feel good about our skin, we feel better about ourselves in general, so my goal is just that – to help you feel great.”

oil in the evening is great too. The first will remove the make-up and SPF, the second is to cleanse the skin. Unless you’re very sensitive or have rosacea, I’d recommend using an exfoliator twice a week too in the evening after cleansing. Look for something with fruit acids (AHAs), which help to slough away dead, dull skin.

A once-a-week brightening face mask will really help to liven up your complexion and even out skintone. As long as you introduce them a few months in advance of your wedding, a mask the night before is wonderful. It will help to soften and smooth your skin ready for flawless make-up application and it’ll help you to relax too. Also, be sure to moisturise daily, keep skin hydrated with a tonic, and by drinking plenty of water.

Finally, if there’s one thing I think can make an enormous difference, it’s using a face oil. Even if your skin is oily, it can really help and there’s one out there for everyone. Brightening and balancing versions are wonderful, and you can use a drop after your make-up has been applied for extra luminosity.

What would you suggest to those worried about congested or oily skin and the effect this will have on their overall make-up look?

I always come back to cleansing as the key to great skin, yet it’s often the step people either skip entirely or skimp on. Cleansing wipes are a real no-no for me, they just move dirt around your skin and don’t cleanse properly. They aren’t great for the environment either, so I’d really avoid these.

The other important thing, particularly when you have oily skin, is to choose balancing products. Often, those aimed at this particular skin type are harsh and strip skin of its natural oils. This doesn’t solve the problem though, in fact it has the opposite effect, making your skin panic into producing even more oil.

It may surprise you to know that oil isn’t the enemy, being oil-free can be though. I even advise people with oily skin to use a facial oil in the evening. It can take time to get used to, and might take longer to even consider, as it does sound counter-intuitive! The key is to use the right

ones – light, easily absorbed and balancing are what you need. Look for ingredients including rosehip, kiwi, thistle (also known as safflower) and jojoba, all great for oily, congested and combination skin. Massage a couple of drops into clean skin every night. Plus, if you aren’t sensitive to them, essential oils can also help to clear congested skin. Look out for palamarosa, cypress, bergamot, lemon, lemongrass and rose geranium.

When is the best time to make changes/improvements to a skincare regime in preparation for a wedding?

It can take time for our skin to adjust to new products and new ingredients. When you try something new, it’s not unusual for your skin to become dry or for you to experience a little redness or even breakouts. This is just our skin adjusting. It does depend on the individual and also what products your skin is used to, but to be safe, I’d give yourself at least two months to introduce changes and new products. This also leaves time for you to see the results.

What products couldn’t you live without?

I use either Clean Sweep Cleansing Balm, and I Can See Clearly Now Make-up Remover. I then follow with a second cleanse using Sweet Cheeks Non-Foaming Face Wash. I exfoliate a few times a week using Scrub Up Exfoliator and use Look on the Bright Side Face Mask once a week – mixing it with some Freshen Up and a few drops of Bloom & Glow. In the day I’m never far away from a bottle of Freshen Up Hydrating Skin Tonic – I love to use it when my skin needs a hydrating boost. Most of the time I use A Little Lift Serum followed by Bloom & Glow face oil in the day and at night Bloom & Glow or Repair & Renew face oil on its own – I just love face oils and the benefits they have on our skin.

INTERVIEW 65

WhenI met with celebrity hairstylist and OGX ambassador, Michael Douglas to mark the launch of OGX’s new Colour Retention range, I can say with confidence that I was definitely having colour retention problems. I’d recently taken the plunge with my dream pastel violet hair colour, but my beloved shade was quickly running away from me. Michael very kindly offered to top my colour up, and while he mixed together a stunning new violet for me, I asked him about OGX’s new range. “All of the brand’s products are PH-balanced with sulphate-free surfactants, which don’t bind to anything you don’t want them to meaning they’re all very gentle on colour,” he told me.

I’m sure we can all agree that there’s not much better than that fresh-from-the-salon feeling, which is why OGX created the new collection, to extend salon or at home colour for up to four weeks. The new products also contain a colour bond plex technology, which helps to protect and strengthen strands for healthylooking, vibrant hair.

With the gorgeous colour applied, Michael began to style my short crop and I was curious whether he had any advice for brides-to-be thinking about colouring their locks pre-

wedding. He said, “It’s so high risk isn’t it? Do not do anything experimental, that’s the main thing! A lot of people seem to want to look like someone else on their wedding day, but I always think it’s better to look like the best, sexiest version of you – make you look great that day!

“Unless you wear your hair up a lot though, I never think it’s such a good idea. Remember, photos are forever. My favourite look was when Jennifer Aniston married Brad Pitt. She had great hair, everyone knew her for her that. So, actually she just had it down with some little diamonds sewn into it on a thin thread, which pinned it really nicely. I’ve tried the technique myself with a thin fishing wire woven through the hair before a blow dry and it just supports the style beautifully.”

Michael continued, “I also like the idea of doing something for the day and changing it up for the evening.” I was totally on board with this, having noticed an increasing trend in brides pulling off an outfit switch-up between the ‘I dos’ and celebrations. Michael suggested: “There‘s something nice about having the hair scraped back for the morning and then something a wavy in the evening or vice versa.”

By now, I was delighted with my own hair and wanted to know more about achieving the same look at home. After all, we can’t all have a celebrity hair stylist on call! He said, “A lot of people want frizz-free shiny hair and ask me on Instagram what shampoo and conditioner they need to buy, but it’s actually down to styling technique. Use a decent bristle brush with a metal barrel, hold the dryer at a particular angle for a long time, about four seconds longer than you think you need to, and keep the brush moving. So, how did you come to work with OGX as it’s brand ambassador? I asked. “During lockdown when all the hairdressers shut down, I decided to go on social media and talk about the best consumer products to use at home. I was getting around 4,000 people a day watching the lives, so a lot of brands got in touch asking me to talk about their products and OGX offered to send me some of its range. When I realised that most of my audience aren’t going to be spending £20 on a bottle of shampoo, yet were the very people asking for help, I agreed to try them. When I saw the huge range of products all PH balanced and with sulphate-free surfactants, at £6.99-£7.99 a bottle, it peaked my interest. I was able to send hundreds of OGX goodies out to my followers, and you wouldn’t believe the amount of people who came back to me saying how much they loved them. We shot 45 one-minute videos for OGX looking at common hair problems with the products to solve them. It’s a great match!”

I left the studio with a spring in my step confirming that indeed, it is difficult to beat the feeling of a fresh new do!

Q&A Beauty

Look your big-day best with top expert advice

LOVE IS IN THE HAIR

What advice can you share when it comes to summer hairstyles?

Above all, work with your hair’s natural texture when choosing a style to achieve lasting results.

Heat and humidity will be your biggest hurdles, leading to frizz and limp locks. A lightweight leave-in conditioner will tame the frizz, and a smoothing serum will help stray flyaways but use sparingly – too much will lead to limp and greasy hair.

An updo will guarantee hair stays in place all day. A bun or chignon looks elegant, while a twisted do gives beach vibes and a soft-messy bun creates a romantic feel. Go for side-swept curls if you want to wear your hair down – braids are great for this!

When choosing flowers or accessories, opt for the most heat-resistant option like baby’s breath (gypsophila) or faux flower pieces. Fresh flower crowns look romantic, but the head gives off a lot of heat. On a sunny day, flowers would be wilting before you can exchange vows.

PAMPERING SESSIONS

The nerves are kicking in for my summer wedding; what can you suggest to help me relax?

Preparing for a summer wedding can be exciting and nerve-wracking, but relaxing is essential. Here are a few suggestions to help you unwind while enhancing your natural beauty.

•Treat yourself to a rejuvenating spa experience with a relaxing massage, facial and body treatment to help release tension and achieve a radiant glow.

•Engage in meditation or yoga to calm your mind and reduce stress. Mindfulness techniques can help you stay present and enjoy the journey towards your special day.

•Pamper your hands and feet with professional treatment like a manicure and pedicure. Choose a long-lasting gel polish in a shade that complements your wedding theme.

•Create a pre-wedding skincare routine! Consult a skincare expert who can recommend a personalised routine to ensure your skin looks flawless on your big day. Remember to stay hydrated and protect your skin from the sun.

•Set aside time for self-care activities such as reading a book, taking a leisurely walk or enjoying a bubble bath. It’s essential to recharge your batteries and reduce wedding stress.

Remember, your wedding day is about celebrating love and happiness. By taking care of yourself and indulging in beauty treatments, you won’t just feel more relaxed and confident but ready to enjoy every moment of your special day.

Feeling the pressure to get everything right and done on time is inevitable when it comes to wedding planning. With a seemingly endless todo list and preparing to expect the unexpected, the sense of overwhelm can quickly take over. This, in turn, results in its own issues such as impaired sleep, digestive issues, skin breakouts, low mood and anxiety. While it isn’t helpful to tell someone planning their big day to simply not stress, thinking about ways to support a stressed body and maintain overall good health, can help prevent some of these unwanted symptoms and make the whole process more manageable.

Read on to discover five ways to support yourself against stress in the run up to your wedding day, courtesy of Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews at Wedding Wellness...

PRIORITISE SLEEP

One of the most underrated activities when it comes to your health is a good night’s sleep. Quality sleep isn’t purely about how many hours of shut-eye you get, but also about being mindful of eating and lifestyle habits, and how they can affect rest. When we consistently sleep well, our brains and bodies are more resilient, making us better at healing, fighting infection, concentrating and making decisions.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the run up to bed time, as both disrupt the brain’s natural restorative activity and block deep sleep, which is key to optimal health.

MAKE TIME FOR MOVEMENT

Exercise is great for physical health but

movement is just as important for our mental health, and ability to handle stress. Our bodies react to stress in the same way they might if encountering a bear in the wilderness! Allowing them the chance to move and release the build up of tension that comes from being in a stressful state, helps them to calm down and return to a state of normal. Movement in any shape or form also encourages deep or mindful breathing, which is another brilliant way of reducing stress and calming the mind and body. Aim for at least 20-30 minutes of your movement of choice per day.

EAT FOODS THAT HELP TO LOWER INFLAMMATION

The reason stress is so harmful is that it causes damage to the body known as oxidative stress. This can result in aches and pains, slow healing and a higher chance of catching a cold. Eating foods that help reduce this damage, are commonly referred to as antiinflammatory, as they promote healing and calm the stress response, aiding everything from gut and hormonal health to improving mood. Some of the best anti-inflammatory foods to include in your meals are: berries, ginger, garlic, dark green leafy vegetables, oily fish, nuts and seeds, avocado and wholegrains.

TAKE REGULAR BREAKS

When you have an endless to-do list, it’s easy to assume every spare moment should be used to work through as much of it as possible. Taking

proper breaks and using that time to actually relax, will calm your otherwise overworked nervous system and help your body return to a rested state. Use those moments to distract yourself with something calming, such as music, conversation or a proper lunch break away from a screen. Not only will this help reduce how stressed you feel, you will digest meals better and feel less fatigued too.

EAT REGULAR, WHOLESOME MEALS

It might sound obvious, but one of the best things you can do for your health is to eat wholesome, balanced meals at a regular time each day. The body loves habit and thrives on routine, so regular meals will help nourish and support a stressed body. Making sure you’re eating foods that include complex carbs will help you maintain energy, support normal body function and improve general health. Look for wholegrains and vegetables; protein like fish, chicken, beans and pulses; and healthy fats such as oily fish, nuts, seeds, avocado and olive oil.

Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas

PICTURE PERFECT

We want our wedding photos to be memorable and beautiful. What advice can you share for the perfect confetti shot?

We’ve all seen the picture of a couple basking in the pure joy of just being married while their loved ones shower them with confetti. But how do you get those perfect confetti shots?

Location is key! A beautiful backdrop will ensure the image has a big impact. Be sure to check with your venue in advance, as many have restrictions on where confetti can be used.

Bright-coloured confetti always stands out and looks fabulous in photos. My favourite is bio-degradable tissue paper as it’s environmentally friendly, comes in various colours and floats beautifully. Avoid anything too large like rose petals as they tend to be heavy, drop quickly and block faces. More is better when it comes to confetti! One or even two handfuls per guest is preferable.

I always recommend that loved ones form a tunnel for the couple to walk down; this gives everyone a chance to throw their confetti and multiple opportunities to get different shots. Enjoy the moment! Try not to look down; walk slowly, look at each other and have fun! For more intimate weddings, have guests gather around and throw confetti while you stand still.

AL FRESCO NUPTIALS

We’re planning an outdoor wedding but are worried about bad weather. What advice can you share?

It’s genuinely true every time I’ve told a couple how we have a great success rate with good weather at weddings! Across six wedding seasons, we’ve only had two quite rainy weddings. But those two days were incredible, and our couples had the most fantastic time. Don’t worry about the weather; just prepare for it. Ensure you’ve got a big enough structure for mingling as well as dining with an extra structure or shelter like a stretch tent in addition to the main marquee to ensure any outdoor aspects of the day, like the ceremony, can continue rain or shine. Have umbrellas on standby and consider a marquee heater. Ensure deliveries and suppliers don’t drive across the key areas of the site, as it can quickly create muddy tracks. Use matting to create walkways along the main routes across the site for guests to walk on.

PLANNING SOS

We want our wedding to be a hit with guests; how can we create an unforgettable experience?

Why not create a wedding website? Your guests can easily hop on to find any event updates and access all the same information online if they misplace their wedding invitation.

What better way to start your wedding celebrations than with a welcome party? It can take place the day or night before the wedding; it’s more casual than your wedding reception and gives loved ones who don’t know each other a chance to meet before your wedding day. It’s a popular reason to extend your wedding beyond one day. Show your guests you’ve really thought about their comfort on the day and book some transport from different venues if applicable. It’s a nice touch and an excuse to have fun with a vehicle like a double-decker bus decked out in your wedding colours for all your guests excitedly awaiting your reception. Additionally, if your wedding venue has limited parking, guest transportation is so handy!

STYLED TO PERFECTION

We’ve just started planning our summer wedding, but we have no idea where to start! What would you suggest? Most people associate weddings with the summer, and we’re not surprised. The lighting uplifts the photos, beautiful flower options are available and outdoor weddings become an option. Unfortunately, this means venues get booked quickly. Book early to avoid disappointment if you have a dream venue, as some get booked up years in advance. You might sigh in relief once the venue is booked, but you must also book your main suppliers for a summer wedding. Photographers, florists, cake designers, videographers, registrars and wedding planners get booked up in advance quickly.

If you’re a bride, you have probably envisioned your dream outfit. But while a luxury summer wedding means enjoying the season’s beauty, you must also consider the heat. You don’t want your guests melting in the sun, so ensure your wedding outfits or suggestions are lightweight, airy and comfortable. You want to dance the night away, not sweat it out. As an experienced wedding planner, I also recommend having cover-ups and jackets for the evenings.

Everyone likes to get away in the summer, so ensure you give guests plenty of warning before your wedding. Save-the-date cards are an excellent way for your guests to mark their calendars, sort out any childcare needed, get time off work and sort accommodation.

It can be challenging to think of all the aspects you need to consider with a summer wedding and all the little details you need to arrange to ensure the day runs smoothly. That’s why we’re here to help with planning and on-the-day coordination.

BLOOMING BEAUTIFUL

My wife-to-be and I are going for a relaxed bohemian theme for our wedding, but we don’t know where to start with our flowers – what would you suggest? When choosing flowers for a boho vibe, it’s always best to go with not just the season’s availability but also for cost. Talk to your florist, who will advise what blooms will be in season and available for your big day.

Don’t be afraid to be creative with colour! The relaxed just-picked look can be lovely with soft pastels or fresh white and green shapes, or will be equally gorgeous with a bright and vibrant mish-mash of colour! Your florist will know what varieties and colours complement each other to create an effortless look.

Top tips and advice for dressing the wedding party

Onceyou’ve got your dream dress in the bag, getting your squad sorted is one of the following big things on the to-do list. It’s most likely that as a nearlywed, you already know what your wedding day will look like. But for the wedding party, finding the perfect attire can be difficult as everyone has their own style and preferences. To help with the task, we’re sharing our top tips to help with the process!

THE BRIDAL PARTY

Ensure everyone feels comfortable, relaxed and happy on the big day, as this will shine in the photos. As much as we love our friendship groups dearly, many personalities are grouped together. The same goes for fashion styles; we all have bits we love about our bodies and bits we don’t. Suppose geography or other restrictions prevent you from getting together with your besties to choose and try on dresses beforehand; multiway ranges can be worn to suit different sizes and shapes. A mismatched look can be stunning! Choose the key colour or send out a fabric swatch before letting your girls pick their outfits to

coordinate with your theme to pull everything together. Alternatively, you can always go bespoke for something truly original to stand out from the crowd.

Keep in mind the colour scheme, as you’ll want to create a cohesive look throughout the day. Consider the time of year as deep shades are better suited to winter, bright colours are perfect for spring, light shades are great for summer and warm tones look lovely in autumn. For the flowergirls, a classic ballerina dress with a sash to match your colour scheme is a great option.

DRESSING THE WEDDING PARTY

MOTHER OF THE BRIDES

The mums play a star role in the bridal party and will want to shine on the big day too. Many agonise about what to wear, choosing the right colours and accessories. With so many fabulous looks available, the choices can be overwhelming – especially if you’re not used to shopping for occasion wear. These factors can undoubtedly strain what should be an enjoyable experience. As the bride, try to make them feel as reassured as possible with plenty of support and advice. As with everyone else on the day, they should feel comfortable and themselves – leading to a happy and confident mother!

Sophistication is key, but this doesn’t mean frumpy! If you love your clothes, then go for a bold colour or striking pattern. Keep it demure by avoiding low-cut necklines or short hems so you can look back on the photos for years with no regrets.

THE GROOMSMEN

Finding the proper attire for the guys can be difficult, especially as more men are taking pride in their wedding appearance. Shopping should be a fun experience where the groomsmen and father-ofthe-groom come together to find the perfect attire. Wherever you go shopping, keep in mind expert advice because the team will have plenty of experience dressing groomsmen. They’ll be aware of the latest trends, what styles suit different wedding themes and how to add the wow factor through different accessories.

For those that have never had a professionally fitted suit, the wedding day is the occasion to have a bespoke-tailored look. The perfect fit is essential for comfort, and you can add little personalised elements such as your initials and wedding date stitched into the lining. A current trend we’re seeing is using earth tones such as sand, beige, brown and green tones.

Grooms who still adore the traditional tuxedo can go for it but think about variations like a velvet material, a bright colour or a patterned effect. Have fun and try different colour combinations until you find the perfect look. Make your personality stand out with your accessory choices – here’s where you can get creative with a dashing waistcoat, a funky watch, an artsy pocket square or braces.

The first place to begin when considering different looks is the venue and wedding theme as a bold tropical print will look out-of-place at a stately house wedding, as will traditional looks at tipi nuptials. Keep in mind the time of year too! You’ll want to ensure you’re warm enough for winter or cool enough for summer. Boleros, jackets and wraps will be your cosy friend for winter.

Our top advice would be not to leave shopping till the last minute as occasion wear differs significantly from the high street. With limited deliveries yearly, many shops cannot reorder an outfit once it has gone. So once you start shopping, ensure you’re ready to commit to a look.

The key is to complement the bridal party and not compete with it, so be aware of colour palettes, themes and what the rest of the bridal party is wearing.

SHARON COUSANS AT CHIMNEY FORMAL MENSWEAR

When did your passion for fashion start?

I’ve always been interested in fashion, but my career began in the wedding industry more than 18 years ago. I’m passionate about styling the groom as an individual because his wedding is the most important day of his life. Feeling and looking confident is the most important consideration.

What do you offer the wedding party?

We have suits and accessories to hire and purchase with a great variety of waistcoats and wonderful patterned ties to add that special touch to an outfit.  We greatly enjoy not only styling the groom but the best men, groomsmen and fathers in slightly different ways to show their relationship to the groom and help them confidently fulfil their roles. We can also style page boys, best women and bride’s men so the whole party is welcome.

What trends can we expect this summer?

We have seen a continuing request for shades of green in suits and accessories. There has also been a keen interest in lighter-coloured suits as well as the mix of chinos and jackets or even chinos with tailcoats to create a very individual look.

What is your favourite part of the job?

The best part of my job is to see the transformation of a nervous and self-conscious groom into a confident guy standing tall and holding his head high while observing himselves in the mirror in one of our amazing

INNA VORONOVA AT INNA VORONOVA BRIDAL

When did your passion for fashion start?

As a child, bright colours and fashion were always very high on the social agenda. As the high school proms drew closer every year, I would dream of arriving in a magnificent dress of my creation. As I grew older, my thoughts turned to marriage and the dream of being the centrepiece of my wedding. I used to draw and paint, which eventually turned to occasion wear. Dour years of professional training and a host of positions in bridal wear stores across Europe led me to the inevitable conclusion that I must open my own store.

What do you offer the wedding party?

We’ve been running since mid-2021 when the impact of Covid was causing many other high street stores to close. We took this as an opportunity to rent a space and get started – we’ve been getting busier every week since! We offer an extensive range of evening wear and flowergirl dresses all highly desirable at great value. We can also produce custom-made and fitted bridesmaid dresses with many design templates and fabrics to work from.

What trends can we expect this summer?

We’re seeing many brides opting for different-coloured gowns for their bridesmaids. Multi-way gowns and satin dresses are growing in popularity, as are neutral shades and sequin dresses. Colour-wise, moss green and sapphire blue seem particularly popular this year.

What is your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part is the final fitting when the bride or bridesmaids try on their dress for the last time before taking it home. We aim for 100 per cent customer satisfaction in every single case and try to implement every

outfits. Helping customers discover their style is especially rewarding –it’s not just about getting a suit.

What’s one piece of advice that you can share with couples?  We advise couples to consider looking for the groom’s suit reasonably soon into their wedding planning journey. It’s not an afterthought and is as essential as a wedding dress. The wedding venue and time of year may influence the suit’s choice, but how special the groom feels and how the outfit compliments his complexion and personality matters.

design element the client requests with perfect execution. This all adds up to a delighted customer; many get emotional and tearful with joy. We completely understand how important the dress element is to one’s appearance and self-esteem, and it’s almost impossible not to be touched by the joy we help to create.

Watch this space

The experts at WatchPilot advise on how to choose the perfect watch for your big day

Awatch should complement a groom’s suit, however it should also be a timepiece that they will want to wear for years to come. Co-founder of WatchPilot.com, Tim Harrison, has shared with County Wedding Magazines’ grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, his expert advice on buying and investing in a timepiece for your big day...

What type of watches are available for grooms-to-be?

The most common watches are quartz, which offer accurate timing with minimal maintenance. Quartz watches also have the most affordable watch movements.

Then there are automatic watches which selfwind using kinetic energy. These store energy by using the movement of your wrist but are typically more expensive than quartz options.

Mechanical watches function via an intricate series of tiny components working together to power the watch. These never need batteries because they require hand-winding to operate. They are super reliable and often very attractive to look at but they do come with a higher price tag than other timepieces.

The final type is the solar watch, which has the ability to convert light energy into electrical energy; they do not require battery replacements and feature a quartz crystal movement for accurate timekeeping.

What are the latest watch trends?

Watches mean so much more than just telling the time; they represent every second of our lives. Some of the most recent style trends include vintage watches with nostalgic elements such as thin cases, minimalistic dials and those with beautiful heritage.

Smart watches are continuing to be a big

trend as people are increasingly investing more in their health and wellbeing, and these timepieces are the best for staying in tune with your body while you meet your fitness goals.  There has also been a huge increase in using bold colours in both jewellery and watches. Blue, green and other pastel colours have been particularly utilised by many brands, producing a variety of new lines and limitededition pieces.

How can grooms-to-be add a personal touch to their wristwear?

A wedding is a great opportunity to add a sentimental item or two to your wardrobe. Potentially borrow a watch from a family member or someone very close to you. If you are wearing a new watch, consider having it engraved to provide a memory of your special day – this could be a date, initials or a quote.

Appearance is one of the largest factors for grooms when choosing what to wear on their big day, with this in mind, what are your tips for grooms-to-be when selecting a watch to complement their suit?

The most common watch worn with a suit is the dress watch. Consider a simple design with no flourishes. A plain black leather strap and simple dial is understated and refined.

When gifting a watch to a groom, what details should be considered?

Opt for a classic and elegant design. Much like an engagement ring, the watch should stand out, however not be too extravagant. Consider taste and style preferences for example, if he’s sporty look for a classic chronograph.

If you know what colour metal the groom prefers to wear as part of his wardrobe i.e. on belt buckles or cufflinks, then this could be a hint for the colour of watch they may like.

Lastly stay within your budget! Don’t forget that weddings can cost quite a bit of money, so set yourself a price limit and work within it.

How do you suggest cleaning and maintaining a watch?

Whether you wear it every day or just for special occasions, it’s important to make time to give your watch a bit of TLC with a regular clean. This not only keeps it looking good, but it’s also essential for making sure it works well,

keeps time effectively over a long period as well as for general hygiene.

How often you should clean your watch varies. If you wear your watch every day, then a thorough clean, once a month, should keep it free of dirt and grime. If you’re more of an occasional wearer, then a six-monthly deep clean is recommended.

The first step is to take a look at the manual that came with your watch. This should give you a good idea of what you can and can’t do during the cleaning process. Next, you’ll need the proper equipment. A few essential items that will help you give your watch a thorough clean include a microfibre cloth, cleaning fluid, brushes, a watch strap remover tool and a Cape Cod polishing cloth.

If your watch strap is made from leather, fabric or silicone, you’ll need to remove it before you can start cleaning. You’ll also need to push or screw in all the crowns (the winders) and buttons to prevent water or moisture from damaging the internal workings of your watch.

There are some parts of your watch, like the crown and buttons, that might be too small to effectively clean with your cloth, and this is where your cleaning brushes come in. They’re perfect for getting into all the nooks and crannies, including the crown, buttons and inside the lugs. Always spray the cleaning fluid onto the tip of each brush, not the watch itself, and use a dry part of your microfibre cloth to remove any excess.

Now it’s time to buff or polish your watch using your Cape Cod polishing cloth. Not only will this remove any streaks and brighten up the surface of your watch, but it’s also a great way to buff out any fine scratches or blemishes.

HONEYMOON NEWS 83

OF LOVEThe city

Aftera speedy trip on the Eurostar and a leisurely stroll, we arrived at the Shangri-La Paris. With all that Paris has to offer, the actual accommodation you find yourself using can often feel like an afterthought. However, with the history and majesty of the Shangri-La Paris, the hotel is as much a tourist destination as the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe or even the Eiffel Tower. A former home of Prince Roland Bonaparte, overlooking the River Seine, the hotel is centrally located in the 16th arrondissement and seamlessly blends European grandeur with traditional Asian hospitality.

FIT FOR ROYALTY

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a welcoming member of the hotel concierge who checked in our bags while we were given a guided tour. The building is a stunning feat of architecture and the location alone is enough to take your breath away. The hotel has plenty of stand-out features (too many to mention), but the impressive marble-lined swimming pool converted from the former stables, the relaxing spa, state-of-the-art health club and stunning entrance hall are all must-sees.

If you want to relax with a drink in your hand, then you’ll feel right at home in the stunningly decorated Le Bar Botaniste or Les Lounges, both of which offer a friendly and impressive service.

SUITE DREAMS

Catching our breath for a moment, we were shown to our suite. In all honesty, the view of the Eiffel Tower a few hundred feet away, in plain sight of our room, made it very hard to focus on the suite itself for a good few minutes! But after wiping the stardust from our eyes, we discovered that we had been treated to a magnificent space. The biggest bed I’d ever seen, a walk-in wardrobe and a lavish bathroom greeted us; with every aspect of the room designed around that view. The attention to detail was beyond anything I could have imagined with every amenity you could possibly need at your fingertips.

One of my favourite aspects was the balcony, which showed the tower in all its splendour and views of the city at every turn. Sitting there with a cup of tea and homemade macarons was one of the highlights of the trip, and I opted to be out on the balcony every spare moment I had.

EAST MEETS WEST

There are two restaurants at Shangri-La Paris, both of which are beautifully decorated with stand-out food. Shang Palace, where I had the pleasure of dining, is France’s only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant and what a treat it was! Inspired by Southeast China’s culinary traditions, the restaurant offers authentic Chinese cuisine by chef Samuel Lee.

With so much choice, we were a little lost for words, but thankfully the charming hostess was very helpful and suggested options that she felt we would enjoy.

Every dish was incredible and the food complemented the surroundings perfectly. We started with the chef’s special sashimi; immaculately prepared, it set the standard for what was to follow. The lobster dumplings were a particular favourite of mine and is something I’d eat every day if possible. After several dishes, it was safe to say I was stuffed, but when the dessert arrived, I couldn’t help myself; the rice balls with mixed fruits and whipped cream was delicious and one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime meal, then this is it. It’s been months since we visited, but we still talk about how delicious everything was.

TRUE ROMANCE

With such awe-inspiring surroundings, we couldn’t resist a short stroll over to the Trocadéro and across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. As beautiful a sight at night as during the day, we couldn’t believe our fortune.

When we eventually headed back to the hotel, we wearily made our way up to our bedroom. The suite had an impressive TV, but it almost felt like a redundancy next to the view from the windows. I’m typically a blackout sleeper, but on this occasion, I had to sleep with the curtains wide open.

After a wonderful night’s sleep, we ordered breakfast to our room and enjoyed it out on our balcony terrace. Barely noticing the brisk February weather, we dined in what felt like the historic heart of Paris. Breakfast was up to the high standards we’d come to expect from the Shangri-La Paris, and when it came to checking out, we felt devastated to be leaving. I can say with absolute certainty that we left with our chi restored and look forward to returning in the near future!

Melissa Cullen reveals why Paris is the perfect honeymoon destination
84

For our second evening in Paris, we had the fortune of being hosted by the Hôtel Dame des Arts. Just a stone’s throw from Notre-Dame, it’s located in the Latin Quarte, which is considered the artistic heart of Paris. The hotel boasts terrace rooms looking out to the Eiffel Tower, a spacious and luxurious rooftop bar, and a charming secret garden courtyard – a gem in the centre of a bustling, metropolitan area.

Entering through a sleek, sliding door, we felt like we’d been invited into an ultra-secretive club. The hotel’s lobby, with its dark motif, stylish sofas and low lighting simultaneously blended Art Deco architecture with the feel of a futuristic nightclub. After checking in, we were shown up to our room, which continued the theme exhibited in the lobby. The architectural vision of the hotel is singular, drawing you completely into the world the owners have created.

SLEEK AND SOPHISTICATED

Our room was the natural extension of the hotel; with all the amenities any couple could desire. Every aspect had been well thought out and cleverly made use of the space available. A sliding, frosted-glass door separated the bedroom from the bathroom area, and the use of lighting and sleek, curved panelling made us feel like we were on the set of a high-budget movie. Our room even had a terrace looking out to the Eiffel Tower, bringing us back into the heart of Paris.

DRINK IT ALL IN

After dropping off our bags, we were given a guided tour of the hotel. The beautifully arranged restaurant and bar giving way through an impressive door to a stunning garden space. A mix of comfortable furniture and grounding flora, the tranquillity of the area makes you forget being mere feet away from the busy streets surrounding the hotel – a true feat. Our next stop was the hotel’s gym. The curved, wooden panelling enveloping the walls of the room is really a sight to behold. The final stop of our tour was the building’s rooftop terrace, and I assure you, our guide had saved the best for last. The terrace looks out in every direction across Paris, choosing a seating location is an almost impossible task!

Major sightseer locations such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and the Panthéon are all visible from the terrace; with stunning pieces of Parisian history everywhere you look. I can imagine sitting at the bar on a summer’s evening watching the sun go down over one of the most beautiful cities in the world being a truly transformative experience.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Once our tour had ended, we made our way down to the restaurant for dinner. Starting with a cocktail in hand, the space had a buzzing atmosphere and was full of people laughing and enjoying the splendour. My hubby and I ordered the corn ribs with magic mayo and cotija cheese as a starter and were impressed by the delicious taste and presentation. After examining the menu and struggling to choose just one dish for our main, we asked our friendly waiter for his recommendations. We chose to share the pork ribs in a Roja and Verde sauce, and when it arrived at our table, we were both incredibly excited for what was to come. Every part was wonderful, and although we were sure we wouldn’t be able to fit any dessert, when we saw the menu, we just had to try the chocolate ganache cake with coffee cream. I’m a big sweet person, so the dessert ticked all of my boxes, and I would happily eat it over and over again if I could!

A FOND FAREWELL

After a busy few days exploring the city, it’s safe to say we were in need of some sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I drifted off and awoke never wanting to leave.

When we eventually motivated ourselves to go downstairs for breakfast, everything looked delicious and we couldn’t decide between the continental or cooked option or which of the vast array of drinks to go for. The food was delicious and when it came to checking out, we felt incredibly sad to be leaving and wished we could re-live the experience all over again. We’ll be heading back to Paris soon, and when we do, we’ll definitely be staying at both of these fabulous hotels again.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 85

HAMPSHIRE! Hooray for

the New Forest to find out what makes it such a special spot for mini-mooners

I’ma huge advocate for mini-mooning in the UK (obviously), and since the dark days of lockdown it’s increasingly become the thing to do –short trip post W-day here in Blighty followed by an overseas vacay later on if you’re so inclined. I’m here to tell you that for the former you’ll struggle to find better than the glorious New Forest. I recently visited two incredible hotels in Hampshire, each one perfect for newlyweds in their own way.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

After a picturesque drive through the New Forest spent pony spotting, we pulled up at Grade II listed hotel The Montagu Arms, tucked away in a quiet corner of Beaulieu, our first port of call on this trip. Incidentally, thanks to the rain I never did see a pony! The ample car park is located behind the hotel, so our introduction to the place was via the absolutely delightful grounds, reminiscent of the eponymous childhood story, The Secret Garden. Scattered with water features, beautifully tended flower beds, lawns and cobbled paths wending their way to the entrance, I only wished the weather had been kind enough to let us enjoy them more.

AN IDYLLIC RETREAT

Boasting 22 bedrooms and suites in the main house, with 33 in total within the hotel, each has it’s own unique design and layout, featuring the ultimate combination of comfort and sophistication. Decorated in a chic and charming country-house style, the soft tones and textures used to create a peaceful space were right up my street.

Our home away from home for the night was one of the property’s stunning Courtyard Retreats hidden amongst the aforementioned gardens and converted from the house’s original 1920s chauffeur’s garages. I don’t know what I was expecting, but to call Hazel a “room” would be doing it a gross disservice. With the look of a space taken straight from the pages of Home & Garden magazine, its vast glass façade looked out over the central courtyard allowing the best of the outside in, and

the team have left no stone unturned when it comes to providing all the comforts you could wish for. This even extends to the smallest of details such as the mini torch attached to the retreat’s keyring, to help you find your way safely through the gardens to the hotel at dinner time, or stagger back after a hearty meal and perhaps a wine flight.

Let’s talk about the bathroom! Possibly on a par with the footprint of my entire house, it boasted a roll top bath, twin sinks, walk-in shower, bidet, and the necessary, of course. You’re never going to step on each other’s toes getting ready here, and the SenSpa toiletries were a real treat, as well as a hint of what awaited on day two.

I can’t recommend this spot highly enough to newlyweds. It’s the perfect retreat for a secluded, romantic, relaxing break.

TIME TO DINE

It was time to see if dinner in The Terrace, the hotel’s awardwinning restaurant, was equal to the benchmark laid down by our accommodation. Marketing hails it as offering an unparalleled finedining experience, and I can’t argue with that. Led by executive chef, Dan Burrell, the menus here champion seasonality and fresh, hyper-local Hampshire ingredients, including produce from the hotel’s own bountiful organic kitchen garden.

Looking at the menu it was a difficult choice, but ultimately I opted for the 42-day aged beef tartare with horseradish and onion purée to start; followed by Cornish red mullet with champagne sauce, artichoke, mussels, and pink fir potatoes. I finished my meal with a delicious selection of local cheese and biscuits. Every mouthful of the entire meal was an explosion of flavour and culinary discovery, while the knowledgeable and charming sommelier, Paulo, selected the perfect English wine to go with it – a Kentish Chapel Down Bacchus, plus a cheeky taste of Norfolk’s Winbirri Bacchus. No evening would be complete without a nightcap, so we headed to the tranquil lounge for a Brandy Alexander, which I’ve since decided is my new favourite cocktail!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Incredibly sad to leave the hotel and it’s charming, friendly and helpful team, we set off after a hearty breakfast and hit the road again. Our destination was a mere six miles away in beautiful Brockenhurst: Carey’s Manor Hotel, The Montagu’s sister establishment. Although downhearted to see the latter in my rear-view mirror, it didn’t take me long to turn my thoughts to the planned day ahead spent in SenSpa at my next destination – the excitement was back!

It’s worth pointing out at this juncture that residents of The Montagu Arms can enjoy complimentary access to SenSpa, including it’s indoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and gym, with treatments and access to the hydrotherapy pool available at an additional cost. The kind folk there even offer free transfers. The choice of where you decide to rest your head is, purely down to your personal style. Where The Montagu Arms is intimate, boutique, tranquil, and secluded; Carey’s Manor offers 18th-century grandeur, vibrancy and a myriad of spaces to enjoy from the aforementioned spa, to its three restaurants, including modern British brasserie Cambium, traditional French bistro Le Blaireau, and authentic Thai restaurant Zen Garden.

PERFECTLY PAMPERED

On arrival, I wasted no time whatsoever in heading straight to the awardwinning SenSpa. A world-class Thai spa focusing on holistic wellness, inspired by ancient Eastern rituals, it was unlike any I’d been to before, so I was interested to see what the experience would have in store. We’d been treated to Hydrotherapy Pool access, and I was like a kid in a sweetshop. But where to begin? Across two floors, this state-of-the-art facility features the pool itself, crystal steam room, ice room, experience showers, herbal sauna and so much more. Adding this to your visit is something I would most definitely encourage as it’s not to be missed. My treatment was booked for the afternoon – a relaxing, full-body Thai massage using SenSpa’s very own natural products, which lifted me away on a cloud of aroma and ultimate relaxation. My therapist was incredible and really listened to me when I talked to her about problem areas and the amount of pressure I’d like. I headed back to the pool with a spring in my step, feeling revitalised and light as a feather.

There’s a wide range of spa packages available, so there’s bound to be something to suit you both and help you unwind following the highs of W-day.

BON APPETIT

By the time I managed to tear myself away from the calming waters of

SenSpa, there was just enough time to pop back to our gorgeous suite to brush up for dinner. Mum and I were thrilled by its two bathrooms, meaning we could both get ready in double quick time without fighting for mirror or sink space! The hotel has 77 bedrooms and suites all designed with tranquillity in mind. Some Manor Rooms in the main house feature a four-poster bed – honeymoon romance goals. Meanwhile, The Garden Rooms are more contemporary, each with a balcony or patio overlooking the grounds. The newly-designed suites offer a luxurious escape with features such as a roof terrace, spacious living area and chic, marble bathroom.

Our table was booked in Le Blaireau, which promised a menu of regional French food. Given it’s location at the other side of this vast hotel, and the fact the rain still hadn’t let up, we were happy indeed to hear that we didn’t need to set foot outside and could cheerfully wend our way through the cosy corridors to reach the restaurant. As I pushed open an unassuming door at the end of a corridor, I let out a gasp of delight. Was this the Hampshire equivalent of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? It was as though I’d stepped into the cobbled streets of Paris with the iconic Art Nouveau Metro sign in front of me and shop fronts complete with awning to my right. Past a vintage Citroen DS, lies the main restaurant, every bit the classic French bistro of a bygone era. So... much... fun!

The menu here is humble and indulgent – fine by me – I was ravenous after such a tiring day in the spa! I dined on a soufflé au fromage, a tasty burger from the specials board and crème brulee, all washed down with a glass of French wine, before going to bed full, relaxed, completely content, and dreaming of those illusive New Forest ponies.

Riverside romance

TheMitre Hampton Court could not be placed in a more romantic location; just a five-minute walk from Hampton Court Palace and nestled on the bank of the River Thames. So, when my other half and I whizzed down to the home county of Surrey for a night away around Valentine’s we had high expectations for our stay.

Before checking in, we busied ourselves in The Mute Swan, a pub conveniently placed next door, for a few hours. With the February sun shining down, much stronger than expected, we couldn’t have started our visit in higher spirits. It’s here I left Daniel, basking in the spring weather, while I headed to the Pamper Room, inside Mitre Hampton Court, to experience a life changing massage from the in-house masseuse, Alex.

The combination of soothing music, Alex’s expert touch and delightful spa products from Lola’s Apothecary (www.lolasapothecary.com) meant my hour of tranquillity flew by and I left feeling refreshed and renewed. Whilst my treatment was designed to instil calm and correct energy imbalances, there was a variety of other therapies to alleviate both mind and body. The Stimulating Treatment designed to eliminate toxins and encourage lymph drainage is perfect for those looking to reduce swelling and improve circulation in their bodies.

I found my partner, where I left him, feeling like a new woman, and we checked into our room for the night. The river-facing Royal Rooms are aptly named as they are indeed fit for royalty. Named individually after historic characters who have famously influenced our part of the world, they boast stunning décor, king-sized beds, complimentary toiletries and – the standout feature of any room – a huge free-standing bathtub. These suites truly are a welcoming space for mini-mooners where you can leave your worries at the door.

The interiors throughout this boutique hotel are certainly breathtaking. The old building has all the grandeur of an English country house, but the modern, inner-city inspired furnishings give the place a kitschy charm. The perfectly curated style looks as though it’s jumped straight out of your Pinterest board, and you’ll end your visit with a strong desire to redesign your living room!

After unloading our bags and freshening up – and admittedly indulging in the orange and ginger liqueur gifted to us in our room – we were more than ready for dinner. Our evening meal took place in the

Mitre’s 1665 Riverside Brasserie. With a centrepiece bar, wine room, and gorgeous al fresco terraces perfect for the warmer months, the restaurant is rich in atmosphere.

We were lucky enough to sample a delicious selection from both the seasonal menu and house specials. Starting with a local Berkshire venison tartare and the warming truffle and Jerusalem artichoke soup, this was a wonderful indication of the restaurant’s dedication to combining locally and worldly sourced delights.

Moving on to our mains we were thrilled with both the pan-fried salmon and beetroot risotto, the fish pairing wonderfully with the French Sancerre our waiter was kind enough to recommend us. But the real star of the show from the whole evening was the duck fat chips loaded with Wiltshire truffle hollandaise – seriously naughty and certainly calorific but they tasted so good it doesn’t even bare thinking about.

The wait staff throughout our entire meal were friendly, welcoming and reassuring – making all the difference to our experience. We ended the night toasting to our stay with two – equally delicious as they were splendid looking – espresso martinis.

After dinner, drifting off to the land of nod was easy, and we had a wonderful night’s sleep.

My other half and I both share a great love for breakfast foods and are known to spend all week searching for the best brunch spot for a Sunday morning, so our morning meal the following day was arguably one of the things we were most excited for. It’s no understatement to say we were certainly not disappointed. At the buffet you could find a huge selection of delicious pastries, cereals and fresh fruit that made your mouth water just from the sight of it. The barista-made coffee was the perfect pick-meup to start the day, especially whilst enjoying the famous river-side views.

New from The Mitre team this spring, is The Coppernose café. With more of the superb breakfast, brunch and lunch options in a relaxed environment, it’s perfect to pop in if you’re in the area.

If you’re planning a romantic night away to escape from the stress of wedding planning or looking for the perfect staycation destination for your mini-moon, The Mitre Hampton Court is undoubtedly the place for you. I couldn’t fault my stay and I know it won’t take any convincing at all to get my other half to consider a second trip there.
