Fall In Love With An Autumn Ceremony

There's a little chill in the air, all of a sudden. The scent of pumpkin spice is rising from lattes across the land. Thanks for everything, summer, but it's time to make way for the understated champion of wedding seasons. Autumn, come on out and strut your cozy, hygge, laid back wedding stuff.

Aldwick Estate Interlace Photography

Why do we love an autumn ceremony?

Well, whisper if if you have to, but some of us prefer the temperature a little cooler! Layers of lace and petticoats, three piece suits - dressing up in your finest can be so much more comfy when the thermometer is a few degrees lower.

The food is amazing! It's harvest festival time, so local produce will be at its best. Roasted squash, mushroom and hazelnut wellington, blackberry and apple tart - what's on your menu?

Some of the most stunning bouquets and floral arrangements are all about the foliage, and suddenly there's a whole new colour palette to play with.

Leave the pinks and purples of summer behind and really lean in to those rich, warm tones and hedgerow accents.

Some of our venues really come in to their own with the change of seasons. Ask the wedding coordinators what they do differently to their summer events. The backdrops are still beautiful but in a whole new way. The autumn flowers, dramatic foliage and softer afternoon light mean your photographer has the chance to use some great new spots.

Inside, your guests can really make the most of the cosy corners they might not have noticed in sunnier weather. If it's raining outside, who cares when there's a log fire and some warm canapes to bring everyone together in celebration.

Halloween and Bonfire Night are some of our best loved annual events, and you can channel those sweet treat, fancy dress and firework vibes into your do.

Now is the time to have a look around our venues and feel the romance of an Autumn wedding. Find the full list of everywhere licensed for civil ceremonies in our directory.

MOLE VALLEY FARMERS LINK UP WITH UK BARBECUE EXPERT

Mole Valley Farmers has linked up with UK barbecue expert, food influencer and cookery book author Marcus Bawdon to promote their fresh food and drink expansion. Marcus is internationally renowned for his barbecue expertise and he runs the UK BBQ School near his home in Cullompton, Devon.

He said, “I’m a big fan of Mole Valley Farmers and I was impressed by the food offered at my local store. There are some top-quality meat and dairy products and they stock everything you need for a decent barbecue.”

Marcus filmed at the Cullompton store using equipment and food from the store including the Mole Valley Farmers’ own-brand cheddar which is hand-turned by the oldest surviving cheddar makers in the world using west country milk; Westaways sausages and an award-winning pickle from Waterhouse Fayre.

Mole Valley Farmers were keen to raise awareness of their food and drink offering after opening fresh food and drink departments in 14 of their stores offering everything from meat and milk to baked goods and beers. Both the Cirencester and Penzance stores have recently undergone

major refurbishments and now boast brand new fresh food and drink departments.

Penzance store manager, Tamsin Thomas, said: “Everybody loves it. We have a new food and drink department, packed full of Cornish products and selling local bread, Trink milk, groceries and local gin and ciders.”

PAXTON & WHITFIELD LAUNCHES NEW CHEESE TO CELEBRATE

225TH BIRTHDAY

This year marks Paxton & Whitfield’s 225th birthday and to celebrate, the UK’s oldest cheesemonger with a store in Bourton-on-the-Water in Gloucestershire launches ‘Cullum’ – an exclusive, brand new British hard ewes’ milk cheese.

This cheese has been developed together with one of Paxton & Whitfield’s long-standing partners, the award-winning cheesemaker Martin Gott of St James Cheese, Cumbria.

James Rutter, managing director of Paxton & Whitfield, says: “We are delighted to work with Martin and his team at Holker Farm on this exciting and exclusive new British ewes’ milk cheese. We named the cheese ‘Cullum’ after Stephen Cullum, who was the original founder of the market stall back in 1742 which started the roots of our business. Cullum is the first of many innovations to come out of our new cheese maturation rooms in the Cotswolds as we continue to champion the incredible craft of artisan cheesemaking and support our cheesemakers in more sustainable farming initiatives.”

To shop, visit www.paxtonandwhitfield.co.uk

Sourced from locations ranging from West Bengal to Mozambique, the teas include Darjeeling, Jasmine Green and Elderflower Green. Featuring flavoursome botanicals from liquorice to lemongrass, the refreshing infusions include Radiance and Dreamtime.

Those visiting Daylesford cafes can enjoy ‘tea for two’ where the collection of blends will be served on trays with brewing instructions and timers for guests to create the perfect cup. There will also be the option to enjoy the teas over ice. Tastings of the new collection will also be held daily in the Daylesford farm shops with customers having the opportunity to experience the flavours and scents of the blends.

Nemi Teas, which employs refugees to give them local work experience to enter the UK workforce, have also manufactured fully-biodegradable tea bags for Daylesford. Lined by a Polylactic Acid (PLA) mesh filter, derived from 100% non-GMO sugarcane, the bags are constructed ultrasonically, without the use of heat or glue. Each of the teas and infusions is available in pillow or pyramid bags, or loose tea caddies.

THE FROGMILL, SHIPTON OLIFFE NEAR CHELTENHAM

This property has been named Best Pub in Gloucestershire by the National Pub & Bar Awards 2022. More than 500 British pubs nationwide entered the awards and each was subject to intensive judging covering overall best practices across several operational categories including interior design, outside space, customer service, menus and drinks lists.

The National Pub & Bar Awards aims to put exemplary on-trade businesses nationwide in the spotlight whilst showcasing the hospitality industry’s diversity, creativity and vital importance to the UK economy.

Tristan O’Hana, the editor of Pub & Bar magazine, which runs the National Pub & Bar Awards, said, “This is an industry that never stands still – the operators of the best pubs have to be at the top of their game 100% of the time. Our 94 County Winners are shining examples of that energy and creativity. With visitor numbers increasing, it’s more important than ever for operators to deliver a standout service during every visit. These winners are wonderful examples of the brilliance of today’s modern trade and the team at The Frogmill are to be congratulated.”

The Frogmill is a stylish and spacious retreat of Cotswolds stone buildings with a 16th-century inn at its heart. Contemporary, rustic-inspired

interiors contrast with exposed stone walls, flagstone floors and old oak beams. Outside, the terraces are edged by landscaped grounds and enjoy far-flung views over the quintessential Cotswolds countryside. Overnight guests can enjoy boutique hotel-style accommodation in its 28 bespoke, en-suite bedrooms.

The Frogmill’s general manager, Simon Stanbrook, said, “We are so excited to be named Best Pub in Gloucestershire by the National Pub & Bar Awards. We’ve worked hard to make The Frogmill both a wonderful destination pub and wedding venue and a welcoming local at the heart of the community.”

Weddings take place in the Mill Room with its high vaulted ceiling and French-style decadence. Exclusive use of this and The Snug is available from 9 am until midnight and the sun terrace is the perfect spot for a drinks reception.

BRUERN COTTAGES

Located in the heart of the Cotswolds, between Chipping Norton, Stow-on-the-Wold and Burford, Bruern is a collection of luxury cottages to welcome guests just as a hotel does. Available for two nights (sometimes even one) or an eight-week hire, they’re available during the week and at the weekend.

Because Bruern offers luxury self-catering, guests are not expected to provide for themselves on their first night, so when they arrive, there are essentials including milk, butter, eggs and sausages waiting along with a few little luxuries like champagne, homemade cakes and local artisan

produce including cheese varieties.

Twice National Winners of VisitBritain’s England for Excellence Award for Luxury Self-Catering, and current holders of EnjoyEngland’s Gold Award for quality, these holiday cottages set a new benchmark for selfcatering.

Bruern Cottages offer the comfort and attention to detail of a good hotel, combined with the privacy, independence and space of home, amidst the civilised ease and style of English country house living.

It is situated in the tranquil setting of the cathedral close and the wonderful garden leads down to the banks of the river Avon. With the rolling countryside beyond, it is difficult to imagine a better location within the Salisbury city limits for any outdoor event, be it a wedding reception, celebration or garden party.

The walled garden is totally enclosed and private covering over half an acre. It also has numerous specimen trees including one of the finest copper beach trees in Wiltshire.

The walled garden can be privately hired for your wedding, party or event.

A marquee will be positioned in the beautiful garden (your choice of style) and we can accommodate up to 150 guests. For smaller numbers a reduced sized marquee is available.

The on-site caterer is the award-winning Vanilla Catering & Events. Vanilla’s key ethics are attention to customer service and the use of top quality local ingredients. These result in bright, modern food styles presented with attention to detail in an unfussy yet friendly manner. A bespoke menu is created for each client and a complimentary wedding planner is provided to run your special day.

An interesting fact: did you know why we are we called The Wardrobe? The original building on the site was constructed in 1254. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and was used to store the robes of the Bishop of Salisbury; hence it was known as the “Bishop’s Wardrobe” or “The Wardrobe”!

A newly launched wedding and events venue in the heart of historic Salisbury.

WORCESTER LODGE ON BADMINTON ESTATE

Designed by William Kent in 1746, Worcester Lodge is a Grade I listed building that faces south along the three-mile avenue that leads to Badminton House in South Gloucestershire. It boasts spectacular views of the surrounding fields, woodland and Badminton House itself. An idyllic wedding venue, it combines the grandeur of a historical building with the versatility of a modern outdoor wedding.

Inside Worcester Lodge is a grand room flooded with natural daylight through the large windows that are reflected by the mirror suspended above the working fireplace. There are stunning period features including an intricate ornate ceiling.

The venue is in the process of securing a ceremony licence for ceremonies to take place inside the lodge for an intimate 30 guests, under the archway or in a marquee in front of the lodge which is where receptions also take place for up to 40 loved ones.

Ceremony licence? Yes

Love at first swipe

Emily and Will’s wedding followed a rustic theme styled with touches of blush pink Images courtesy of Rebecca Casey Photography

Emily and Will Standen married on 25A June 2022 at Manor Estate Wiltshire.

22

Emily and Will met at Bath Spa University but it wasn’t until years later that they came across each other on a dating app and decided to go from a drink. “Will proposed on the evening of 17th September 2020, on a pier at the Liberty Lara resort in Antalya, Turkey,” Emily tells us. “We visited the pier to take some photos and everyone seemed to be leaving so we had it to ourselves. Will told me that he had an accessory to add to our photographs and got down on one knee before presenting me with a stunning solitaire ring that he had designed himself and had made which was a wonderful surprise - I didn’t even see the ring for the first few minutes because I was crying happy tears!”

SETTING THE SCENE

The Manor Estate was the first venue that the couple viewed and they both fell in love with it. “We knew that we wanted to have the ceremony and reception in the same place and this allowed us to do that,” Emily says.

“It’s a 17th-century manor house with beautiful gardens and grounds and the barn itself has exposed brick walls. I could visualize how our wedding would be decorated and the venue coordinator, Pippa, was so helpful - we knew as soon as we met her that she would be able to deliver the perfect day exactly how we wanted.”

Emily designed the couple’s centrepieces

using artificial flowers which they were able to keep afterwards. “It was a fun and creative task for me to do in my spare time and it meant that I could have the flower varieties and colours that I wanted,” she tells us. “We also had an archway decorated with artificial flowers and white drapes as well as a flower wall and giant LOVE letters which all looked incredible.”

Emily also made the table plan using a template which was then printed by TavernCreative on Etsy. “All 12 tables were named after cities around the world that we had visited together and each one featured a photograph of us in that place,” Emily says. “Our place names were made using brown paper tags and our favours were packets of personalised Love Heart sweets.”

The couple chose an all-vegan menu and a three-tier cake with a dark chocolate and raspberry layer, a lemon and elderflower tier and a carrot cake covered with naked buttercream. “We had a cake topper that said ‘Mr & Mrs Standen’ and we had the names of our cat, Flo, and dog, Teigan, made out of icing decorating the cake,” Emily says.

LOOKING THE PART

“I loved getting ready at the venue with my bridesmaids,” Emily tells us. I wore a beautiful fishtail-shaped dress with a long train. I accessorised it with a Cathedral-length veil and a pearl and gemstone belt.”

Will and his groomsmen chose blue suits teamed with blush pink ties and pocket squares along with brown shoes. “Will wore a grey chequered waistcoat whilst the others wore navy braces,” Emily says. “Our beautiful bridesmaids wore blush pink dresses featuring sparkly belts. “They chose their shoes and wore their hair in different styles that were created by my friend, Lily.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“I loved the speeches – I felt so proud of my dad, my new husband and his groomsmen for putting so much effort into them and making us all laugh and cry at the same time!” Emily tells us. “I’m also really grateful to one of the guests who audio recorded the speeches on his phone. We hadn’t planned to do this, but I’m so glad that he did because we’ve been able to listen to them again.”

The couple both loved performing their first dance. “We practised it for weeks in the kitchen, so it was incredible to do it in real life with everyone watching and cheering us on!” Emily says. “We hired a DJ who played Motown and 80s classics which got everyone in the mood for dancing!”

“It was such an amazing occasion to have everyone we love gathered in the same room which included friends who had travelled across the world from New Zealand, Australia, Denmark, The Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Spain and Scotland to celebrate with us. Considering we hadn’t seen many of them in recent years due to the pandemic, it felt extra-special to have them there.” - Emily and Will

24

REAL WEDDINGS“Give yourself enough time to plan for the day. We had almost two years which was great because we could take our time and if we hit any bumps in the road then we had time to resolve them without worrying. Ask your bridesmaids and groomsmen for help because they’re there to support you. Ours were fantastic and did an amazing job ensuring the day ran smoothly for us.” - Emily and Will

A family affair

Cotswold House Hotel & Spa in Chipping Campden was the stylish setting for Hollie and Lewis’s big day Images courtesy of AJT Photography

Hollie and Lewis met when they both worked at the Noel Arms Hotel where she was a receptionist and he was the deputy manager. “His sense of humour first attracted me to him,” Hollie tells us.

The couple became engaged on the 2nd March 2019 in Stratford-upon-Avon. “We’d enjoyed a lovely meal and then Lewis asked me to marry him on a bridge over the river which was so romantic,” Hollie says.

Cotswold House Hotel & Spa was the natural choice of wedding venue for the couple because Hollie works there. “My mum, Mandy, is the wedding and events manager there,” she tells us. “My mum got married at the hotel so Lewis and I both knew this was where we wanted to have our special day. It’s the perfect venue, the gardens are stunning and it’s a very special place for us.”

Here, Hollie tells us about their wedding decorated with rose gold and blush pink hues and a nod to Harry Potter

Hollie Denyer and Lewis Harry Keeling married on Saturday 23rd July 2022 at Cotswold House Hotel and Spa in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire.

We had the registrar Jean Heasey conduct our ceremony who had previously married my mother and is a friend of hers which was lovely.

I made our table plan with a pale pink background androse gold font. I also created our table and place namesthat featured a matching rose gold font.

Our flowers included ivory and pale pink roses mixed with astilbe and ivory freesias. We also incorporated silver eucalyptus, ivy, and rosemary foliage and I loved our pretty floral arch made from pink and white flowers and green foliage.

A LOCAL

love story

Raegan and Jack’s rustic-inspired barn wedding enjoyed a grey, green and white theme

Images courtesy of Daniella Marinos Photography

Raegan and Jack Robson married on 1st October 2021 at Saxon Barn in Leonard Stanley, Gloucestershire.

32

Raegan and Jack met when she started working for his mum.

“Jack used to visit the office to see his mum and we caught each other’s eye,” Raegan tells us. The couple became engaged during a trip to Vienna to celebrate her birthday. “It was a big surprise when Jack popped the question in a beautiful park, about an hour after we had landed!” Raegan says.

SETTING THE SCENE

Saxon Barn was the natural choice of wedding venue for the couple because it’s situated on their good friends’ farm. “It’s a converted barn with a high ceiling that offers a rustic-inspired setting,” Raegan says. “The local church is located just behind it and, along with the pond on the farm and the beautiful fields surrounding it, it was the perfect place to host a relaxed day which is what we wanted. We enjoyed canapés by the pond in the sunshine and then walked through the picturesque orchard to the marquee, where the sun set behind us. The marquee was covered in festoon lighting which lit up the field all evening and looked so romantic.” The couple styled their day with plenty of white flowers and greenery that complimented the surrounding scenery.

33 REAL WEDDINGS

LOOKING THE PART

Raegan wore an ivory satin backless dress with a high neck from the White Rose collection. “I knew that I wanted something stylish and simple and I fell in love with this gown straight away,” she tells us. “I teamed it with a two-tier veil, a hair comb and a pair of drop earrings.”

Jack and his groomsmen wore green tweed jackets with beige chinos and grey bow ties with brown shoes. “Jack chose a different waistcoat to his groomsmen,” Raegan explains.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Raegan and Jack hired a duo of acoustic singers to perform during the drinks reception. “Their full band joined them for the evening entertainment which was a big hit with our guests,” Raegan says. “The dancefloor was packed until the end of the night creating such a happy celebration!”

“We were touched and humbled that everybody we loved made the effort to celebrate with us.” – Raegan and Jack

Our experts answer your big-day questions

WITH LOVE FROM JAPAN

My hubby-to-be is Japanese so we want to incorporate some traditional elements into our Cotswold wedding – what do you suggest?

Meet the expert: Cathy and Yukki run a small family-run online business, Zusetsu based in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire importing authentic furoshiki and other gifts from Kyoto in Japan.

Cathy and Yukki tell us: We are new to the wedding industry and have something unique to offer. Authentic Japanese furoshiki are high-quality cloths printed with beautiful designs that share symbolic meanings. Often the motifs are flowers such as Kyoto which has traditionally been aligned with the seasons. Furoshiki are a big part of Japanese wrapping culture, which includes kimono and origami. It originated in the old capital of

Japan more than a thousand years ago, when the cloth was used to wrap the precious objects of the Emperor when they were not on display. There was a spiritual element to the wrapping, which is echoed in the meditative nature of furoshiki wrapping today.

Furoshiki are on-trend, owing to their reusability – in a wedding setting they make wonderful keepsakes because they absorb the memories of the special day. Historically in Japan, a bride would be given furoshiki on her wedding day and then continue to use it throughout her life, wrapping gifts for her family when she returned home.

These photographs show an Easter wedding that the couple requested furoshiki-wrapped favours for. They chose the bunny ears wrap to go with their Easter theme and the favour boxes contained chocolate mini eggs.

As a same-sex couple, we’re planning a joint stag celebration and gathering all of our friends together. What activity can you suggest?

Meet the expert: JDR Karting and Activity Centre based in Gloucester offers go-karting, laser tag, axe throwing and segway experiences.

Richard says: We offer one of Gloucestershire’s most exciting visitor attractions - a great venue for hen and stag parties, family fun, birthday parties, team-building events, office parties and other celebrations.

Visitors can enjoy karting, laser tag, segways and axe throwing. Our most popular option for stag and hen gatherings is an organised race event on the go-karts priced at £50 per person. An adrenaline-fuelled activity choice is axe throwing priced at £20 per person. Why not combine karting, axe throwing and food? A package is offered for a three or four-hour session with a pizza buffet for £70 per person.

Our happily ever after

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Cullen shares her wedding planning journey Images courtesy of www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

My husband (it still feels weird saying that) and I were engaged for 18 months before we finally tied the knot. Planning our wedding during a global pandemic wasn’t something I ever imagined happening, but thankfully, despite the ups and downs, we managed to have our

special day. I know it’s cliché to say, but we really did have the perfect day, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Now that I’m finally Mrs Cullen, I thought I’d take the time to share with you some tips that I learnt from planning our big day...

We chose a rustic property that looked gorgeous all year round. Our wedding coordinator, Eloise, took care of all the details andmade sure everything ran seamlessly. We arranged a last minutemeeting with her to run through the plan for the day, whichwe found was a great help and meant we knew exactly what toexpect. I recommend booking a venue with a dedicated weddingcoordinator or hiring an external company, so that you can relaxand enjoy yourself without having to worry.

Flowers can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to us. If like me, you’re awful with flower names, I’d suggest going for a ready-made package. I told our florist what I liked and left the rest to her - a decision that saved me hours of stress! One thing I didn’t consider was just how many flowers we would need to take home the next day. We gave our friends and family some of the centrepieces as gifts, which they loved, and it meant we didn’t have to take them all home with us - win, win!

I didn’t anticipate how I would feel after purchasing my dress. I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-with-emotion moment when wearing it, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. My poor bridesmaids had to deal with so many meltdowns about it, but now that the day has been and gone, I can say that the dress was perfect for me. If you start to panic that you’ve made the wrong choice, think about how you felt when you first tried it on and cling to that feeling. I had several photos of myself in the dress that I would obsess over and criticise, and if I could go back in time, I would delete those photos so I wouldn’t waste time worrying. On the day, with your hair and make-up done, you’ll feel amazing, and all those doubts will drift away. Go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, and do what makes you happy!

Dave and I met our photographer while he was working at a friend’s wedding. He has an amazing style that we both loved, and we found him really easy to be around. One of the best things we did in the run-up to the wedding was book a prewedding shoot. We were both quite nervous in front of the camera, and this put us at ease and meant that when we got to the big day, we both felt relaxed having our picture taken.

52

As some of you may remember, make-up is not my forte, and I’m embarrassed to tell you that I can’t tell the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! I booked a trial with my hair and make-up artist a few weeks before the wedding. If you’re worried about how you’ll look on the day or want to try different styles, I would definitely recommend doing this. I’m so glad I did, and it meant that I felt relaxed knowing that my suppliers had everything under control on the day.

One thing that we learnt after the wedding is that everyone loves cake! We purchased 50 cake boxes as we’ve both been to weddings where it gets left at the end of the night, so we thought that would be more than enough. However, those 50 went within an hour, and we had guests asking for additional pieces, so I would definitely provide more boxes than you need.

Surround yourself with people that you trust and love. My bridesmaids were amazing in the run-up to the wedding and on the day itself. They spoiled me with two hen dos, which were fabulous, a wedding-themed advent calendar full of fun and thoughtful gifts and endless support and love throughout the planning process. Trust me when I say that you will feel calmer on the wedding morning if you’re surrounded by your best friends. They made sure I looked and felt perfect, and I don’t think I could have done it without them.

Dave and I knew we wanted a band for our evening receptionthat would get everyone up and dancing. We booked an amazingtrio who learnt our first dance song and incorporated someof our favourite tunes into their set list. We were a bit worriedthat people would get bored or restless throughout the day, butall of our guests were quite content chatting during the drinksreception, and I’m quite glad we kept things scaled back as itallowed us to catch up with friends and family who we hadn’t seenin a long time due to the pandemic.

Our ceremony was performed by a registrar, who we didn’tmeet until the morning of the wedding. Originally, this mademe feel anxious but the whole process went smoothly, and theladies conducting our service were calming and reassuring. Weincorporated promises to each other in our vows that we feltrepresented us as a couple. For those of you about to tie the knot, try and forget about all of the small things, as there’s nothing morespecial than looking into your partner’s eyes and telling them howmuch you love them in front of your loved ones.

Talk to your friends and family and see if they’d like to have an active role in your day. Our mums were really pleased that we asked them to be our witnesses, and it was a lovely way of including them in the ceremony. My beloved bridesmaid, Kelly, also sang a song accompanied by Dave on the guitar during the wedding breakfast. It was really touching and one of my favourite moments from the day.

BRIDE & TESTED

As you’ll know if you’ve been following her Bride’s Dairy features, our own CWM bride, Melissa Barker (now Cullen), tied the knot this summer. When her make-up artist advised at her trial that she begin a skincare regime and invest in a moisturiser, exfoliator and eye cream, we leapt into action to find the best products for her. Here, Melissa shares her skincare journey to W-day…

Glossybox Skincare Exfoliating Clay Scrub

£13, 100ml, www.glossybox.co.uk

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this exfoliating scrub, but after just one use, my skin felt smoother and healthier. Unlike many other exfoliators I’ve tried, this wasn’t too harsh on my skin, but still did a great job of cleaning my pores. After six weeks of use, I still have over half of the 100ml bottle left, so it’s great value for money, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Ameliorate Replenishing Facial Cream

£24, 75ml, www.ameliorate.com

I was a little apprehensive about trying this face cream, as more often than not, new products make my skin break out. I was pleasantly surprised that after just one use, my skin felt hydrated and smooth and best of all, it didn’t cause any unwanted reactions. I’ve been using this twice a day for six weeks, and I’ve definitely seen a smoother and softer result.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus + Eye £83, 15ml, www.lookfantastic.com

This cream is designed to reduce the look of dark spots and smooth the appearance of lines, wrinkles and uneven texture underneath your eyes. I’m 27 and like to think I don’t have too many wrinkles yet, but I do have dark circles, so I was interested to see whether this cream would help. After six weeks of use, it had decreased the puffiness around my eyes and has made the dark circles less noticeable. It’s left my skin feeling soft and hydrated, and a little goes a long way.

JUST CHILL

When Patchology’s Rosé Sheet Masks landed on my desk in the middle of the summer heatwave I couldn’t wait to get home and chill. Literally that is, as the pack states “served chilled,” so I popped them in the fridge post haste. I’d been suffering with very dry skin, which had me in a panic about Melissa’s impending wedding day and how it would affect the look of my make-up – one more reason to take this mask out for a spin as it’s packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid. Even the pack adorned with champagne glasses looks wedding ready!

So, I smoothed one of these chilled sheets masks onto my hot and bothered face and settled myself on the patio with a glass of wine and a book. Let me tell you, after a scorching day, this was heaven. It calmed my angry skin right down, but not only that, the dry patches were much improved after massaging the remaining serum into my skin. In fact, my make-up artist wasn’t sure what I was worried about when I shared my dry skin woes on the big day, and my foundation went on a dream. Thanks Patchology!

THINK PINK

Premium Spanish spa brand Germaine de Capuccinni will be ditching the usual grey bottle of its hero product, Timexpert SRNS Repair Night Progress Serum, in favour of a pink version in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

The brand’s most technologically advanced booster serum for youthful, rejuvenated skin is packed with no less than 22 active ingredients. Having evolved over the years, its new formula includes an innovative ingredient that increases the power of absorption by eight, making the serum penetrate deeper for fast, effective results. At night, while your skin is more receptive, it repairs damage and re-activates cellular regeneration. During the day it protects skin against environmental factors and external aggressors.

RAISING THE BAR

Far from an ordinary bar of soap, le savon lune from silver-based brand ARgENTUM is an ingenious cleanser in solid form, making it perfect for popping into your suitcase as you head off on honeymoon.

Any water content in the product is replaced with the brand’s patented fusion of silver hydrosol and DNA HP, and targets blemishes while leaving skin clean, cushioned and visibly healthier. Great for men or women, the formulation is also enhanced by bentonite, a colloidal clay composed of aged volcanic ash, traditionally used for its healing effect. Combined with other winning ingredients, this ensures a purifying action without dehydrating or irritating your skin, keeping it in check without upsetting its natural balance. £80, www.argentumapothecary.com

SILKY SMOOTH

According to experts, keratosis pilaris or strawberry legs is something that’s present in 80 per cent of adolescents and 40 per cent of adults and is aggravated by heat and sun exposure. At last count #strawberrylegs peaked at 144.9 million views, but is still growing. Enter Luna Daily’s Everything Oil, this skincare saviour is clinically proven to visibly reduce ingrown hairs, scars, stretch marks, dark spots, redness and bumps for smooth, soft skin. Plus, this lightweight and deeply moisturising, multi-tasking oil is gentle enough to use anywhere on your body.

£18, https://luna-daily.com

AU NATUREL

If you prefer to de-fuzz at home, check out Parissa’s 100 per cent natural cruelty-free and leaping-bunny-certified wax range. The products and their packaging are all made from sustainable, ethically-sourced, natural materials, so if you care as much about the environment as you do about what you put on your skin, give them a go. Say “no” to synthetic waxes!

There are a wide range of options available depending on your experience and hair type. I tried Parissa Legs & Body Warm Wax (£13). Just pop it in the microwave to warm it up and you’re off! Everything you need is included from spatulas to strips. I decided to wax one leg and shave the other for comparison. There’s a slight chance I over heated the product as my waxed leg was livid with me afterwards. However, the redness had all gone down by the morning and I was left with a silky-smooth result versus the shaved leg, which was dry and still a bit rough. The waxed leg was good to go beyond the spray tan too, so I didn’t need to risk any damage, and lasted past Melissa’s wedding and well into the following week before I needed to take further action. My advice would be to start with the wax strips if you’re not used to waxing at home or have sensitive skin, but I was super-pleased with the results.

TIME TO SHINE

The days of using a wealth of products on your hair are over with TAOH, as the brand makes taking care of your locks a doddle with its line of key products with all-in-one solutions to help you achieve the glossiest, most luxe-looking and healthy tresses no matter the type or condition.

The Hydrate Shampoo (£17) and Conditioner (£18) are now a mainstay in my shower and are infused with organic plant oils that have breathed new life into my hair. By far my favourite product in the range though is the TAOH Oil (£20). Argan, macadamia and kukui oils help to restore the life and shine of locks, while promoting scalp health to encourage growth and vitality. It also prevents split ends, calms frizz and detangles. I used it after washing my hair the morning of Melissa’s wedding and received multiple compliments throughout the day about how shiny it looked!

WEDDING-READY SKIN

We all know stress can play havoc with our skin and let’s face it, planning a wedding can be trying. Peace Out skincare has a range of solution-based products to ensure your complexion is picture-perfect on your big day.

It all starts with the prep and so it’s time to bring your A-game… vitamin A that is! Peace Out’s Retinol Face Stick (£28) and Retinol Eye Stick (£25) offer an encapsulated retinol blend that softens the look of wrinkles and texture without any of the harsh side effects. In addition, the fruit enzyme complex combines papaya and pumpkin to target pores and reveal brighter, smoother-looking skin. Start using three-months prior to the nuptials to ensure you’re wedding ready.

Nicole Petty, haircare expert for Milk + Blush, shares 2022’s most popular wedding hair trends and how to achieve them

MESSY BUN

Although, achieving the perfect messy bun can feel like an impossible task TikTok has the answer with a viral hack that’s seen more than six million views…

Section your hair into two ponytails and twist into rope braids. Next, tie the ends of the hair back into the pony to create two loops. Finally, thread one loop through the other to create the bun and secure in place with bobby pins. To elevate the look into the bridal realm, pull out some face-framing tendrils and loosely curl them for the ultimate romantic up do.

POLISHED PONYTAIL

With heatwaves expected to become more frequent, ponytails are a popular and chic style to sport for comfortably enjoying your summer wedding. Take inspiration from Ariana Grande, who showed off her trademark sleek high pony at her wedding last year.

To get this voluminous look, make two ponytails with your top and bottom layers. Next, create a gap in the top pony that you can thread the bottom through to create a layered look. If you need more length, why not invest in clip-in extensions?

FLIPPY BOB

We often think of long hair being the height of romance, but shorter wedding hair is having a moment in 2022. Many have taken inspiration from Kourtney Kardashian's latest look and have adopted her flippy bob for their big days.

To get the look, use a hair mousse for plenty of volume. Then, with a round brush, blow dry the ends upwards to create the flick. Follow with the cool setting to help your locks stay in place and finish by spritzing with hairspray.

HOLLYWOOD WAVES

Nothing exudes glamour like Hollywood waves, a firm favourite among brides. Jennifer Lopez showed just how stunning the style can be at her recent wedding to Ben Affleck, styling her hair in loose curls, with the top layer pulled back into a subtle bouffant.

To recreate the look, use a oneinch curling iron to curl the tresses in layers from the bottom up, holding the curling iron horizontally and rolling the hair downwards as though you’re using rollers. Finish by gently combing through and positioning the hair to create continuous waves before holding the still-hot curling iron against where they dip and clip them in place to cool and set.

HALF-UP, HALF-DOWN

Romantic, versatile and effortlessly elegant this has been one of the most popular styles for brides to wear this year.

Almost anyone can wear a half-up, half-down do, but for those with fine hair, consider investing in some extensions for more body. Focus on creating some height at the crown with some volumising spray and backcombing.

Grooms editor Melissa Cullen reveals the latest best buys and product launches

British independent designer, The Camden Watch Company has announced its move into jewellery. The new Memento Mori 925 sterling silver unisex ring is adorned with the company’s Memento Mori design.

Memento Mori translates as: ‘Remember you must die’, a recurring theme in Victorian jewellery and art. Contrary to how that may sound, Memento Moris was intended as a celebration of life, to remind us that life is short and every second counts.

Anneke Short, designer and co-founder of The Camden Watch Company, said: “While watch design has always been a passion, I originally studied jewellery making and decided it was time to pursue this. While I love all the products we make, the Memento Mori seemed most natural, especially with its link to the Victorian era who had a fascination with collecting Memento Mori keepsakes.”

FROM MADRIDWith love

Editor Claire Ridley spent Easter in Spain’s vibrant capital city

From the moment I arrived in Madrid, a two-and-a-half hour flight from London, I was greeted by a myriad of narrow streets and large squares filled with landmarks to fill my Insta feed at every turn, from the iconic Royal Palace of Madrid and Plaza Mayor to the eclectic mix of boutiques, tapas restaurants and bars. This extended bank holiday is a great time to visit when the weather has warmed up (average temperature 67 degrees) but the heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended on the city.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this largest city in Spain, tucked away on Calle de Echegaray, sits the five-star Gran Hotel Inglés, Madrid’s oldest hotel having opened its doors for the first time in 1886. Located a 25-minute drive from the airport, I was excited to visit this boutique property, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, that oozes the glamour of bygone times from the moment you step into the decadent 1920s-inspired lobby with its feature bar, mirrored walls and Art Deco touches.

into a delicious menu of pastries, cold meats and cheese, eggs benedict and a selection of miniature desserts washed down with a Cosmopolitan cocktail, all while enjoying live music from talented singer, songwriter and guitarist Gigi McFarlane (www.instagram.com/gigimcfarlane).

with a choice of L’Occitane bath products. A highlight was the balcony providing outside space in the city –stepping on to it and admiring the view, I felt like I was in a movie.

DINE IN STYLE

Restaurant Casa Lobo in the hotel is well-known on the Madrid dining scene, with its open-plan kitchen serving traditional dishes. A highlight for me was the Show Brunch, priced at 45 euros per person and served every Sunday in the lobby, where I tucked

TAKE A DIP

A fun way of giving my body a little TLC after a day spent sightseeing was a visit to the dedicated spa facility and wellness area where I reserved the jacuzzi and had exclusive use of the entire spa. Tempting treatments on the extensive spa menu that uses Sisley products include an aromatic Californian massage.

WHAT TO SEE

A visit to the tourist hotspot Sol-Gran Via is a must, where adjoining streets blend culture and history with theatres, restaurants and shops. El Retiro Park provides a green oasis in the heart of the city, the perfect spot for a picnic with its pretty Rosaleda Rose Garden and a large artificial lake where rowing boats can be rented.

DO NOT DISTURB

The hotel boasts 48 luxurious rooms and suites, from the spacious Deluxe and Grand Deluxe Rooms to the Echegaray Suite (bearing the same name as the street outside) which was my home-from-home for three nights. This stylish space sleeps up to four people in two large suites interconnected by a hallway (perfect if you’re enjoying a family-moon).

There are two king-size beds with a pillow menu that guaranteed my beauty sleep, two fully equipped bathrooms with waterfall showers and a freestanding vintage-inspired bathtub

Last but certainly not least, the La Latina neighbourhood situated in the heart of Madrid, dating back to the Middle Ages, is home to the famous El Rastro Flea Market which was top of my list to discover. Allow some time in this bustling area that offers a romantic mix of old meets new. Viva España!

HONEYMOONS 79

The ultimate

destination

Olivia Gibson discovers why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

After what felt like an eternity of not being able to travel due to restrictions, I was so excited to visit the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel – especially after seeing images of the stunning property online. For the first time in three years, I packed my bags and headed to the airport!

Dubrovnik is a wonderful place to visit, evident even from thousands of feet up in the air. The crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes create the perfect backdrop for honeymoons –no wonder it’s known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. After a short flight, we touched down and the real adventure began!

THE PERFECT SETTING

With a beachfront location and a showstopping backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, the five-star hotel offers some of the best views in Dubrovnik. From the moment I arrived, the staff were so welcoming and accommodating –nothing was too much trouble.

With 292 luxurious rooms, I couldn’t wait to see where I would spend the next few nights and wasn’t disappointed when I entered the spacious deluxe double room. The air-conditioned space featured double sinks, a waterfall shower, bath, seating area and a queen-sized bed. My favourite part of the room was the balcony, where I spent most of my time soaking up the sun on the loungers.

The hotel has everything needed for memorable holidays from restaurants, bars, pools, a spa area and a gym – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The well-maintained facilities were excellent, and I especially loved the outdoor pool area surrounded by sun loungers – the perfect location to relax your senses.

The beach was located only a few meters from the property and was a wonderful place to relax. With a peaceful atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and the sound of crashing waves, what better location to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life?

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to try some local delicacies. The hotel is home to three restaurants; each offering something different to cater for all tastes.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we had a welcoming meal in the Momenti Restaurant. Here I enjoyed a prawn and beetroot starter, sea bass with potatoes and asparagus for main and a tasty chocolate cake

for dessert. The food was divine, especially the fluffy and dreamy potatoes!

Each morning I was greeted with a delicious sea of food, from cereals, pastries, granola and fresh fruit to a selection of hot food, including sausages, omelettes, bacon and hash browns. The buffet restaurant was superb, with a laid-back atmosphere and a variety of food on offer. Every night the chefs used fresh ingredients to create a fantastic selection of Mediterranean and international specialities that even the fussiest eaters would enjoy. A highlight of my trip was sitting outside on the terrace during dinner, it had a romantic atmosphere and was the perfect location to watch the sun set. For those chilly evenings, guests can sit indoors while enjoying the stunning views thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. One of my favourite meals from the restaurant was a spaghetti dish - the flavours were unbelievable and I wish I knew the recipe!

For more of a relaxed meal, the Miramare is a beachfront restaurant that offers panoramic views and a wide range of food. It was here where I enjoyed a chicken BLT, the best sandwich I’d ever eaten, and sipped on some cocktails.

We had a farewell meal at the Momenti Restaurant on our last night at the hotel’s sister property – Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel. After a short walk, we arrived at the sophisticated space and enjoyed a goose liver pâté with puff pastry pears, followed by scallops and a hazelnut and chocolate cake to finish. Croatia is well known for its wine, so of course I had to try a few glasses.

80

I couldn’t fault the service, the staff were always very attentive, friendly and professional. My glass was never empty, and I felt thoroughly looked after.

TIME TO EXPLORE

What better way to explore Dubrovnik than on an electric tuktuk? The tour started at the portside market in Gruz Harbour where we got a chance to see the local area and fishermen. We had so much fun whizzing around the streets and enjoying the incredible views, especially from the Franjo Tuđman Bridge. I loved visiting the top of Srđ Mountain and seeing the beautiful islands off the coast. The guides were excellent and they shared so much history and knowledge.

The hotel is only a few minutes from the charming Old Town, which is enclosed by Medieval walls, and is a must-visit destination. Game of Thrones fans would recognise the spaces from the much-loved show as the town was a filming destination for some very iconic scenes.

In the Old Town you’ll find cobbled streets, bars, shops and restaurants, alongside many awe-inspiring historical features and architecture. The town has survived chronicled events, such as the 17th-century earthquake and The Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s.

REST AND RELAX

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is home to the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Here we truly indulged in the facilities and treatment menu. I had a 35-minute de-stress massage which I was nervous about at first, as I’d never had a massage before, but the team were fantastic and put my mind at ease. My body felt amazing and I will be getting another one soon! I walked out of the room completely at peace and headed straight to the waterbeds in the relaxation room. There are many other treatments guests can book too including facials, pedicures, manicures, body treatments and more.

The facilities in the spa were great with a steam room and saunas, indoor pool and, for ladies-only, The Afrodita Spa.

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is perfect for those on a budget who still want to enjoy pure luxury. This four-spa hotel has many stylish rooms, a refurbished lobby and pool area.

FUN IN THE SUN

I highly recommend visiting the Coral Beach Club Dubrovnik for those staying in either hotel. With beach activities, excellent dining, entertainment, bars and spa elements, this popular space is not one to miss! The food here was fantastic and it’s the ideal space to spend a few hours relaxing with a cocktail in hand.

THE FINAL VERDICT

I couldn’t fault my stay at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel. If you’re searching for the perfect honeymoon destination, look no further. The hotel provides the most romantic setting to relax and enjoy quality time with loved ones.
