"We are so happy we chose Pollards for our wedding reception, Cara and her team did a superb job being attentive to our needs in the planning. On the day she made sure everything ran smoothly throughout and the staff were extremely helpful, we had a great day!
The food was delicious for every course, and the canapés went down extremely well in the outside Barnhouse and gorgeous gardens with our guests. They catered for our guests with dietary requirements superbly, and they were well looked after.
It was the perfect venue for the number of friends and family that we wanted, and it created a lovely intimate wedding which we will never forget!
We particularly loved the private bar area and decoration of the main room which made the whole day feel so special and we couldn't recommend Pollards enough!"

2022: The year of the veil
Well,
hasn’t 2022 just flown by? I can hardly believe it, here we are, fast approaching Christmas. It’s only natural as you reach the end of a year to reflect on all that’s happened as well as what’s to come. For me, the highlight has been CWM senior editor Melissa’s nuptials. Celebrating that amazing wedding day really brought home to me how far we’ve come this year from the dark days of 2020 and 2021 with its lockdowns and restrictions. It felt like the normality we’d been praying for, when many of us had been left plagued with doubt over whether our wonderful world of weddings would ever be back in quite the same way.
There’s even been the usual flurry of celebrity weddings this year, leading the way as ever with trends we expect to see featuring in your weddings very soon, notably on the veil front. There was Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck with the bride dressed in that oh-so elegant Ralph Lauren turtleneck column ceremony dress and a sleek silhouette with removable veil hood for the evening. Personally, I’m hoping we see more bridal hoods on wedding dresses next year, following on from the amazing capes that made inroads in 2022. Meanwhile, Kourtney Kardashian made pairing a short dress with a long veil a thing when she married Travis Barker. The showstopping cathedral-length veil was personalised with hand-embroidered flowers and a large image of the Virgin Mary inspired by her new husband’s tattoo. If you love the idea of going bespoke have a look out for locally-based suppliers such as https://thebridallounge.co.uk who can embroider your veil with your wedding date, lyrics, initials or even a poem.
In September, when we sadly lost Her Majesty the Queen and TV channels were airing wall-to-wall documentaries looking back over her incredible life and service, we were reminded of her wedding day in 1947, when she was still Princess Elizabeth. Seeing these images brought me back full circle. Sure, J-Lo’s veil was new and edgy, Kourtney K’s was modern and oh-so personal, but looking at these 70-something-year-old images of our beloved Queen made me realise: Her Majesty did it best! Her breathtaking 13-foot tulle veil attached at the shoulders was symbolic of rebirth and growth after the Second World War and was said to be inspired by Botticelli’s painting of Primavera.
So, enough musings from me! I hope you enjoy this, the last issue of the year. The region’s photographers have shared their 2022 highlights and we talk to local caterers about setting the right tone with your wedding breakfast.
Enjoy and keeeep planning!

Summer nuptials are fantastic, but for me cosy winter weddings snuggled up together in a snowstopping venue are very much their equal in the romance stakes.
This showstopping bake isn’t the only element that paints a frostily elegant picture at The Venue at The Royal Liver Building in this oh-so fabulous wintry styled shoot.

Also on my Chester trip I got to experience Oddfellows. While its facade and main structure sing of another iconic time period, the Georgian era, its public spaces and rooms offer something quite different.
I’ve been lucky enough to visit not one, but two Chester wedding venues recently. First up, The Queen at Chester. Being a history buff, I fell in love with its nods to the city’s Roman heritage.
I love, love, love cheese! So when I saw this cheese wall from Kings’ Cheese and Wine my heart did a little somersault of joy! This is a great savoury alternative to a doughnut wall for the less sweet-toothed among you.
I can’t get enough of bride Victoria’s incredible Zavana Bridal gown. With its modern glamour and silvery hue, it was the perfect choice for a New-Year’s-Eve wedding.

VINE TO SHINE
It’s no secret that English wine has been a work in progress since it first launched in the 1990s. But now, thanks to the change in the weather and thriving soil quality across the country, the British beverage is having a real moment. Carden Park Estate’s production of English sparkling wine from its vineyard tucked away towards the back of the Estate is no exception. With a story that dates back to 1988, the vineyard has thrived year on year since the vines were planted. Following dedication, hard work and a lot of nurturing, the 4,000 vines are now able to produce up to 6,000 bottles of quality Carden Park Estate Reserve Sparkling every year and the Estate’s fine-dining restaurant, The Vines, has now hired a new head sommelier, Patryk Kapelinski. Bringing an in-depth knowledge of wine, how to perfectly pair it with food and identify its characteristics, Patryk has been working in the industry for more than 15 years.
Having worked with the team through a record hot summer, Patryk shares his predictions for the future of English wine: “Throughout the summer, I walked past the vines every day on my way to work to see how they were doing and each day, they were visibly thriving more and more. With less moisture and dryer air, this year’s harvest in October is set to be the best yet. I can’t wait!”

Please tell us about Lilac & Thyme. We’re a wedding florist based on The Wirral and are passionate about all we do! The business was born out of my passion for all things floral. I’m a self-taught florist and am fanatical about learning new skills. We work with creative flair to put together beautiful fresh and faux flower displays for all occasions. We love what we do and put our heart and soul into our work to ensure that your wedding flowers are all you’ve dreamed of and more. From consultation to the actual day, we’re with you every step of the way, guiding you and recommending seasonal flowers and styles to suit your theme.
What do you love most about working with weddings?
It has to be seeing the look on a bride’s face on the morning of the wedding, when she sees her bouquet. It’s an image I never tire of!
What’s your proudest achievement so far?
We’ve had the privilege for two years in a row to be nominated for wedding florist of the year at a local prestigious wedding awards event, and we got through to the finals both times too. To say this was a huge honour for us is an understatement. The fact that our brides nominated and voted for us made what we do even more satisfying than it already was. We’re a small business and were up against large florists with up to 10 staff, so to be recognised like this was a huge achievement.

ROYALTY Fit for
Being a total history nerd, I was giddy with excitement when I pulled up outside The Queen at Chester Hotel, so impressive is its Victorian facade I felt as though I might be about to step back in time. The grand and impressive lobby didn’t disappoint with its theatrical four-storey staircase, complete with ornate iron balustrade – a showstopping setting for wedding photographs. Built in 1860, directly opposite Chester station to serve first-class rail passengers, the Grade II listed Hotel, which is part of the BW Premier Collection, has quite the past and is thought to be the first skyscraper of its time. Indeed, I knew we were in good company as it lists among its former guests such icons as Charles Dickens, Cecil Rhodes and Lillie Langtry, and standing in the lobby it’s easy to imagine them checking in just as I was about to. What’s more, located a mere 10-minute walk from the centre of Chester it offers a great base for guests in town to attend your wedding and being so close to the station it’s easy for them to reach you. I was delighted to find a large on-site car park too – so rare in city-based hotels.
KINGS AND QUEENS
This huge hotel boasts two parts, the original Victorian building of course, and to the rear the more recent addition, Kings at The Queen, which was our home for the night. As I made my way through the historical venue to reach my room I soon discovered that the Victorian era wasn’t the only period embraced. Heading past The King’s Grill and onto the link the place transformed into a different era richly and rightfully celebrated in Chester – that of the Romans. The historical building is indeed Italianate in style and this became more evident passing the gorgeous courtyards and terraces with their Roman-esque statues, classical urns and arches. On a glorious day, you could almost find yourself transported to Italy for your nuptials.
Each floor of the Kings section is dedicated to a different country and every room is named after one of that nation’s kings. Our floor was Chinese themed and Emperor Hongwu was our host, founder of the Chinese Ming dynasty, who reigned from 1368 to 1398. The room was hung with paintings of our Emperor in ornate gold frames and the décor was accented with luxurious reds, I enjoyed its character. No doubt, your guests would enjoy swapping stories at breakfast about what room they’re staying in and googling their own king!
TYING THE KNOT
The Queen at Chester boasts eight event areas with two al fresco spaces
and six banqueting suites, all catering for every type of reception, civil ceremony and partnership. The Hotel has been hosting weddings for more than 150 years, and the team’s expertise has been handed down to its various members over that time, allowing them to carefully and deftly plan each special day from intimate gatherings of 50 to larger parties of 300.
The Colonnades can play host to 300 loved ones. The perfect space for large ceremonies and celebrations with a nod to the Roman period, it’s brimming with character. Plus, the high ceilings with opulent chandelier centrepiece, make this a grand place to host your big day.
Natural light floods in through overhead skylights in the glass-fronted Palazzo, where there’s space for 120 nearest and dearest. It also boasts stunning views over the magnificent Baltic Exchange Gardens, which can host 150 guests themselves.
The Victoria Room is one of the Hotel’s original lounges, located in the Grade II listed building, and as you’d expect is brimming with Victorian character and décor making a it a beautiful setting for ceremonies. Here 60 of your loved ones can witness your vows. Similarly, The Disraeli Room is located on the first floor and is packed with style and Victorian features. It overlooks the Baltic Exchange Gardens and is ideal for intimate weddings with 25 nearest and dearest.
Finally, The Jubilee Room based in the modern Kings’ building is a stylish suite able to seat 100 guests. It’s flooded with natural daylight, is fully air-conditioned and boasts its own private terrace.
At the end of a wonderful day, you can then retire to the honeymoon suite with its stunning four-poster bed and feature bath.

A BREAK FROM
the norm
Oddfellows Chester has a myriad of quirky and memorable wedding spaces for couples looking for something out of the ordinary
Oddfellows
Chester is housed within a gorgeous Georgian townhouse, built by Lady Mary Calverley in 1676. Located in the heart of the city it’s just moments from the River Dee and the city centre where the iconic Tudor Rows sit alongside Victorian and Georgian mansions, and Roman ruins. The hotel boasts an idiosyncratic and whimsical interior where nothing is as it seems, and the period features are boldly juxtaposed by playful elements that offer a fun and super-stylish setting for a wedding to remember. Editor Kelly Andrews paid this fabulously quirky hotspot a visit to find out more.
WHERE TO WED
Given the first impression the hotel had made I was excited to explore the wedding spaces. Heading upstairs via the grand staircase to the first floor I was welcomed by The Grown Up Rooms. This suite of private event spaces occupies the whole floor, which is where the drawing rooms of the original house would have been. Dramatically high ceilings and sash windows feature in each of the spaces here: The Grown Up, The Grown Up Bar and The Roof Terrace. You can opt to hire the entire floor or just the bar and terrace if you prefer. The venue is licensed for ceremonies here for anywhere between six to 63 guests. Many decide to say “I do” surrounded by the glamour of the The Grown Up, before moving across the landing into the bar with its fabulous boxing hares willow sculpture for the drinks reception, which offers you the opportunity to spill out onto the terrace on a sunny city day, before returning to The Grown Up for a seated wedding breakfast with 63 loved ones. For the evening revelries you can invite additional guests, bringing the total up to a maximum of 130 across the whole first floor.
For more intimate celebrations, the oh-so fun Alice In Wonderland Tea Rooms is also an option. Fulfilling its promise on the quirky front, you’ll find a tea table all set up on the ceiling. Here, you can dine in style, comfortably seating around 16 of your nearest and dearest.
It doesn’t stop there! For an al fresco city vibe, why not choose to celebrate in The Secret Garden? Set at the rear of the hotel and tended to by in-house florists, it offers a magical setting for photography set against seasonal planting, oversized lamps, water features and outdoor fires.
A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD
During our stay we had the pleasure of relaxing in The Newbrook Loft. Located on the second floor of the hotel’s newer section, it’s a brilliantly characterful room named after the famous Cestrian cinematographer, Peter Newbrook, who shot the Oscarwinning epic Laurence of Arabia. The enormous six-foot circular
bed immediately caught my attention with something of the Hollywood-era opulence about it. I must admit to being a little sceptical though until I enjoyed the best night’s sleep I think I’ve ever had! A sumptuous seating area and separate loo are also located on the first floor of the split-level loft, with the double shower upstairs on the mezzanine level.
In fact, all of the rooms here offer a talking point, so if you tie the knot at Oddfellows Chester your guests will not only be able to enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep, they’ll also be cocooned in history and a playful sense of fun. The Calverly Attic and Lady Mary’s Loft are both inspired by the formidable woman responsible for the building the hotel now inhabits. Exposed beams and period features take you back to how Georgian Chester might have felt. The Caldecott Classic and Caldecott Cottage are influenced by another famous Cestrian, Randolf Caldecott who filled children’s books with his humorous illustrations throughout the 19th century. Finally, the Douglas Duplex Suite is a nod to architect John Douglas who shaped much of Chester. Further accommodation for your nearest and dearest is also available a mere three-minute walk from the hotel in the shape of Apartments by Oddfellows.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
Create your own wedding-day cocktail to complement your theme. Oddfellows’ mixologists can dream up a bespoke creation or add a twist to your favourite for your drinks reception.
The Roof Terrace allows you to experience an al fresco post-ceremony reception that’s secluded and private in the heart of the city. You can even decide to have your first dance here!
I love the panelled bar downstairs with its stunning nature-themed frescos. It has a wonderful atmosphere and was almost as if they knew I was coming with The Steeldrivers’ Reckless album playing while I sipped on my post-dinner Baileys!
• The Potting Shed is the Secret Garden’s super-fun bar complete with buckets and pitch forks! Stop here for some quirky couple portraits.

WINTER VENUES
A NEW YEAR,
a new beginning
Victoria and Christopher said “I do” on New Year’s Eve at the beautiful Mottram Hall
Images courtesy of Helen Williams Photography

Victoria and Christopher met on a blind date at the Manchester Christmas markets, having been set up by their friends. Three years later, and now a couple, they moved to Dubai and that’s where they still live, happily ever after.
Christopher proposed at Pier Chic in Dubai. He’d taken Victoria to brunch there and afterwards surprised her with all of her closest friends looking on.
They chose Mottram Hall to host their big day. The location, stunning grounds and new Champneys Spa sealed the deal for them. The day after the wedding, they enjoyed massages in the Spa with their close family and friends. The gents in the wedding party even got to make the most of it the night before.
Here, the bride shares her memories of the wedding day, New Year’s Eve, 2021...
SETTING THE SCENE
Joseph Massie Flowers set an incredibly impressive scene for the big day in line with the couple’s palette of white, blush and gold. The showstopping centrepieces on four of the tables featured statement gold vases filled with a lush combination of hydrangeas and roses arranged in a full dome. These were accompanied by a curated selection of cut glass vases, each filled with a collection of fresh blush and ivory blooms. Tea lights in golden cut glasses accented the tables, as well as the aisle, which was also lined with the statement gold vases atop clear acrylic plinths. The remaining reception tables were adorned with a collection of cut-glass vases filled with blush and white blooms, accented with golden candlesticks, chunky ivory pillar candles and golden tea lights. On the top table there was a gorgeous luxury run of fresh flowers lit by floating candles and hurricane lanterns.
The bride’s incredible hand-tied bouquet was filled with soft, fluffy garden roses in shades of soft blush and ivory. The sweet-scented avalanche roses were paired with blush hydrangeas and ivory akito. It was chic and glamorous without being too fussy, and beautifully clean and modern.
The tableplan was crafted from gold acrylic and designed to match the theme of the couple’s save-the-dates by AE Design. The place and table names too were fashioned from the same material. Also, tying in with the glam gold theme were the bottles of Bottega, gifted to each guest as wedding favours so they could all raise a toast at midnight.
The big-day bake featured four showstopping tiers decorated with gold pearls placed around the bottom of each tier. The base boasted an impressive ruffle effect. The table and the cake itself were adorned in flowers to complement the rest of the décor.

LOOKING THE PART
“I opted for a New-Year’s-Eve-glam dress. I’m not usually a sparkly girl, but it caught my eye and with it being new year I had the perfect excuse,” Victoria tells us. She found the dream Zavana Bridal dress at The White Gallery in Ramsbottom. The bride continues, “It had a detachable cape, which I removed towards the end of the night.”
The groom and his groomsmen all wore black tie. Christopher’s tux from Ascot and Chapels in DIFC, Dubai, had chic velvet lapels.
The bridesmaids, Victoria’s sister and two best friends, wore Pretty Lavish Bridal dresses, all white but in different styles.
CELEBRATE IN STYLE
Singer Abbie Hanlon entertained guests during the ceremony and drinks reception. As Victoria walked up the aisle towards Christopher she sang Can’t Help Falling In Love With You. They signed the register to Forever Young and exited the ceremony to Send Me On My Way, also sung by the oh-so talented Abbie.
During the evening, String Infusion a vibrant, electric and acoustic string group filled the dancefloor with a DJ, saxophonist and two electric violinists. Victoria remembers, “The electric violinists played Auld Lang Syne after the countdown to new year. We wanted a party atmosphere and that’s certainly how it felt. The firework display at midnight was magical too.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
“I felt extremely nervous, but when I walked down the aisle all the nerves vanished and it was time to enjoy the day,” Victoria shares. “We had friends who’d travelled from far and wide to be with us and celebrate – Australia, Scotland, Dubai and Spain to name a few. I probably had the most drunk bridesmaids in history. There was a lot of dancing on chairs!”

Ceri and Michael opted for a pink palette for their day’s styling, which featured both bold and subtle hues Images courtesy of Caroline White Photography
Ceri and Michael both belonged to North Wales-based running club The Nightcrawlers when they met, and it was during one of their runs through the muddy, wet woods and mountains of North Wales that they started chatting for the first time. Ceri works for Snowdonia Cheese Company and was telling her auntie about her day at work as they jogged along. Michael overheard this and boldly proclaimed: “I don’t like cheese!” Certainly a conversation starter! Michael proposed in the couple’s favourite spot on Anglesey, Rhoscolyn’s headland. “He got down on one knee on the cliffs above a beautiful rock archway. I was photographing it when I turned to
find him presenting me with the most incredible engagement ring,” Ceri remembers.
The venue search was on and the couple chose Arley Hall in Cheshire as the place that would have the honour of hosting their big day. “It is absolutely stunning in every way. It’s both majestic and perfectly maintained despite its age. The grounds surrounding the Hall are beautifully kept and the staff couldn’t be more helpful,” Ceri explains.
Join us as the bride gives us the lowdown on W-day, 6th May, 2022...
41 REAL WEDDINGS
I felt very relaxed and took it all in, but Michael was nervous before the ceremony. He settled in to the day later though and we both loved it so much.
I had the most gorgeous mix of pink flowers in my bouquet. It included garden roses, peonies, astilbe, hypericum berries, anemones, ranunculus, eucalyptus, parviflora, green thalaspi, celosia and eryngiums, and was finished with cerise satin material wrapped around the stems.
The church ceremony was incredibly special. I’ve frequented the church since I was born, so it was amazing to finally be married there. I wore Pepper by Hayley Paige. As soon as I tried it on I absolutely fell in love. It was the perfect blend of princess style and a more fitted silhouette. I paired it with a Swarovski crystal necklace and droplet earrings. My shoes were sparkly Kurt Geiger heels, and I later changed into a pair of glittery Kate Spade trainers allowing me to dance the night away.
The groom and his groomsman wore the same navy tweed-style three piece suits, personalised with a distinctive floral lining embossed with ‘Ceri & Michael 6th May 2022.’ Michael wore a bold pink tie and pocket square, while his groomsman’s accessories were blush pink. His suit was further personalised with pink buttonholes and he wore cufflinks made from amethyst geo, to reflect his career as geologist.
My bridesmaids wore navy ASOS dresses, which had a glittery top half. They accessoried with name necklaces – a gift from myself and Michael.

Our favours were wooden coasters with our guests’ names engraved on them. We wanted something that people would be able to keep. It’s great to visit friends’ and family’s homes now and see them on their coffee tables!
The table plan featured jars of pink flowers matching my bouquet
The reception tables were all named after our favourite places. Rhoscolyn was the name of the top table as this is where we got engaged.
Michael is a geologist, so we went back to Anglesey a couple of weeks before the wedding and borrowed lots of pretty rocks from near the spot we got engaged. We had them dotted around the venue, forming part of the centrepieces. Each table also had a gorgeous goblet of bright pink flowers at the centre.
Our four-tier cake of lemon, vanilla and chocolate was iced in white and decorated with bright pink and navy dots.
We had a BMW 7 Series to get us from A to B. Collette and Steve, the owners of the company we hired it from, were absolutely awesome and a pleasure to have as part of our day.
We started the day’s dining with a selection of five canapés that seemed to never stop coming! Our three-course wedding breakfast featured leek and potato soup, roast chicken with roast potatoes and mixed root vegetable mash, and chocolate brownie with white chocolate ice cream and caramelised popcorn to finish. In the evening we had fish and chips, plus a variety of pizzas. The food throughout was sensational!

During the evening live band Ukebox entertained us all and we can’t recommend them enough. They engaged everyone of all ages and were great fun. They play ukuleles and percussion instruments with utensils, such as an electric drum kit with spoons!
Our photographer, Caroline White, was phenomenal from start to finish. From our very first Zoom call we had such a laugh and could see how passionate she was about providing a great level of personal customer service, alongside an incredible standard of photography. She made us feel so relaxed and brought a sense of fun to the entire day. Along with the video footage captured by Sam from Woodpecker Films, these images provide wonderful memories of the most special day of our lives.
We’d been taking dance lessons and learned to do a Viennese waltz. We performed it to our song, Tightrope by Michelle Williams, from The Greatest Showman and finished with a move called the death drop!!

Gemma and Paul said “I do” at Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa at Christmastime Images
Although Gemma and Paul officially met online, Gemma already knew of Paul from their local area. They clicked right away and the rest is history. During lockdown, on their seven-year anniversary as a couple, Paul proposed at home over a cheese box. “It was a huge surprise,” Gemma tells us.
Conveniently located close to the couple’s home, they immediately fell in love with Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa and set the date to celebrate their big day there on 30th December, 2021. Here, the newlyweds share some of their gorgeous, festive, wedding album.

Gemma recalls, “Saying ‘I do’ was the highlight for me, as was seeing family on Zoom who weren’t able to make it on the day due to Covid.”
Gemma was thrilled with the reception space styling, “Formby Hall and The Wedding Rooms made it look fabulous,” she says.
“I remember feeling very calm in the morning and was just looking forward to the day.” – Gemma

“
We
met in the famous, albeit dingy, nightclub Acapulco in Halifax when we were teenagers,” Emily tells us. She and Sam were both out with their friends who were dating, and when they disappeared to the dancefloor, Emily and Sam were left to get to know each other. “What attracted me to Sam were his cheeky-chap persona and amazing blue eyes, as well as how hilarious he is,” Emily remembers. After bumping into each other again on various other nights out, Sam finally asked Emily for her number. Love soon blossomed and a year into their relationship they both decided to follow their dreams. Sam joined the Royal Marines and was stationed in Somerset, while Emily went to the University of Birmingham. “The long distance was difficult and I think I cried every night for the first year, but it only made our love for each other stronger,” Emily shares. Fast forward five years and Sam left the Royal Marines and Emily had graduated, reunited they bought their first home together.
When they’d been dating for seven years, they took the trip of a lifetime to the Maldives. On the second evening there, Sam told Emily that he’d booked for them to have a meal on the beach. When they arrived Emily didn’t think anything of the hotel photographer being there, snapping away. So when Sam got down on one knee and asked her to marry him, it was a huge surprise. “I don’t think I spoke to him for a few minutes,” Emily says. “He even had to ask me if I was going to say ‘yes’!”
Read on as the bride tells us all about their wedding day, 29th April, 2022...
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Before they even got engaged, Emily and Sam always said they’d get married at Peckforton Castle, having been there for an afternoon tea once and falling in love with it. In fact, they didn’t even look at any other venues, so sure were they. “It’s such a romantic, tranquil, fairytale venue. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and the interior has so much character and charm,” Emily says.
SETTING THE SCENE
The couple opted for a white, gold and glamorous theme for the big day. Flowers were really important to them and Emily had a vision of white roses and hydrangeas everywhere. White blossom trees lined the aisle and white roses decorated the ceremony and top tables. The bride’s bouquet featured more white roses, hydrangeas and peonies, and the bridesmaids all had smaller versions. The men also wore white roses as their buttonholes. Centrepieces were white blossom trees.
The stationery continued the white and gold theme and carried a similar design to the invitations. “We named all our tables after places that are special to us, either where we’ve lived or been to on holiday,” Emily says. Every guest also had a personalised menu and miniature white chocolate vodka-shot favours. “At every party we host, there’s always white chocolate vodka so it reminds our friends of us,” Emily explains. 54
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
For the wedding breakfast the couple and their guests dined on goat’s cheese tart to start, followed by braised shin of beef for main course, while chocolate brownie was served for dessert. Their three-tier bake boasted a bottom layer of Victoria sponge adorned in frosted flowers, a middle layer of chocolate cake bearing the newlyweds’ monogram, and a top layer of lemon sponge decorated in glitter.
LOOKING THE PART
Emily wore a stunning gown by Berta Couture. “I always knew I wanted to wear a Berta dress on my wedding day. I’d seen this particular one on the website and found the only UK stockist. I rang to enquire and discovered it was due to arrive in store the following week as part of a trunk show, so I immediately booked train tickets to London to go and see it. As soon as I tried it on, I knew it was the one,” Emily tells us.
Sam chose a bespoke tuxedo by Whitfield and Ward. It was important for him to stand out and match the palette of the wedding, so he wore an ivory jacket whereas his groomsmen where all dressed in black.
The bridesmaids looked gorgeous in their white dresses with cowl neck and fishtail. They had low backs to complement the back of the bride’s dress. “The girls all looked absolutely amazing,” Emily says.
TIME TO CELEBRATE
The entertainment was a key part of the day for Emily and Sam. “We wanted it to be one big party all day long,” Emily says. A string quartet played as guests arrived and during the ceremony. During the drinks reception they played electric strings and were accompanied by a DJ. The sun shone as they entertained guests with Ibiza-style music.
During the wedding breakfast, master of ceremonies and entertainer Howard Wing, hosted the meal and sung. “The atmosphere he brought to the afternoon was wonderful. People are still talking about him now,” Emily tells us. Guests were up and dancing, waving napkins and doing the love train around the room.
In the evening, 10-piece band The White Keys filled the dancefloor and a DJ, sax and percussion player followed, ensuring everyone was partying well into the night.

A touch of frost
Demonstrating how beautiful winter nuptials can be, this team of wedding professionals got together and styled The Venue at the Royal Liver Building to snow-stopping effect Images courtesy of Rachel Clarke Photography
“
Lots of couples opt for a summer wedding, which is understandable, but you’re never guaranteed good weather in the UK, so why not consider a beautiful winter wedding?” says shoot coordinator Amy Wilkinson from Sweetpea and Ivy. Indeed, the season lends itself so well to warm, cosy candlelight against a backdrop of frosty weather. So, the team opted for a colour palette of white and grey woven together with subtle, soft blues and created this gorgeously glam shoot packed with seasonal inspiration.

What a wedding-packed year it’s been – 2022: our first full year of restriction-free celebrations since the start of the pandemic. Surely it’s one for the history books. Our local wedding suppliers have never been so busy turning their couples’ wedding dreams into longawaited reality. “Finally” is certainly a word we’ve heard a lot this year! Before we bid farewell to 2022 we asked the region’s wedding photographers to guide us on a look back at their year’s highlights. They’ve been rushed of their feet and are no doubt ready to put them up in front of the fire and enjoy some Christmas telly, but we reckon they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Wedding catering ideas to suit your vibe
So much of the atmosphere you create for your big day comes from the catering. If you dream of a traditional, elegant and grand affair, then a seated wedding breakfast with three courses (or more) will send you well on your way to setting the right tone. On the other hand, if a relaxed and informal celebration is on the cards, you’ll be looking for something flexible and free-flowing. But when all’s said and done, as long as you ensure loved ones have plenty to indulge in they’ll be well-fuelled with a spring in their step by the time they’re ready to hit the dancefloor. Whatever your vision, we have some food for thought...
Don’t know where to start? Ashley Whittington-Orford, events manager at Chester-based Elite Bistro Events has a few pointers...
What will guests have eaten already that day?
Did they skip breakfast and lunch? Are you serving canapés? What time of day will it be when they sit down? Weddings can be a long day so make sure guests are suitably sustained. If this will be their first meal of the day, you might want to go for something a bit more robust. Alternatively, if they’ve been snacking for most of the day already, something lighter that won’t overwhelm or go to waste might be a good option. Three courses can be a lot to manage after endless canapés and a few glasses of fizz!
Dietary requirements
It’s never good to feel like an afterthought, so try to incorporate some vegetarian or gluten-free options into your menu naturally, perhaps with the starter or dessert. There are some wonderful gluten-free and vegan desserts that are sure to be crowd-pleasers and impress your guests who are plant-based or have intolerances.
Think about how your menu will come together with the other elements of your day
The plates, the cutlery and centrepieces can all help to bring your theme together and set the tone. If you’re looking for a more laid-back vibe, then sharing platters served on rustic boards will bring a general air of conviviality. Or if you’re wanting a more traditional affair, you’ll be reaching for the white, pressed table cloths and bringing in traditional elements like a bread course of amuse-bouche. Think about how the menu can complement the mood you’re trying to create and make sure everything is working together in unison.
ABOUT ELITE BISTRO EVENTS
Since opening neighbourhood bistro Sticky Walnut in Chester, back in 2011, Elite Bistros has gone from strength to strength and now encompasses six bistros throughout the North West. At these eateries the team make everyone who walks through their doors feel special by doing what they do best: fancy food in a relaxed environment with a warm welcome. Having received many an enquiry about helping folk with large events and parties over the years, they decided to expand further to meet this demand and Elite Bistro Events was born.
At Elite Bristro Events there’s a dedicated events manager, a development kitchen and an experienced team ready to deliver signature Elite Bistros food and service at your wedding. The team have developed special events menus and have taken their Bistro favourites, such as braised featherblade of beef to pop-up tents and venues across the UK. They’ll work with you to create each menu bespoke, filled with the things you and your guests will love.

RAISING THE BAR
As well as keeping guests well-feed, you’ll also want to ensure the drink is free-flowing. Chat to your venue about bar options as they might be happy to work with you on some creative drinks reception ideas. The ever-popular pimp your prosecco station where guests can add various mixers, fruit, colourings, glitters and so on to the humble glass of bubbly always leads to heaps of fun as guests get creative. You may even be able to create your own themed cocktail for a super-glam post-ceremony cocktail hour. There are plenty of converted horse-box bars out there too serving a myriad of locally-sourced bevvies. Check out Juniper 1993 (https://juniper1933.com), which offers its signature G&Ts, classic cocktails, fizz and full bar service from its lovingly restored bohemian Gin Tin. The team can create a bespoke wedding package and the JuniperGeo dome allows you to set up your very own 15metre bar area with space for 250 people standing.
If you’re having a rustic-style wedding we’d recommend including lots of wood-inspired features. Log slices make a great addition to your tables as name tags, cake stand and for layering food on your catering table. Based on our extensive experience our top tips for catering a relaxed, informal wedding would start with avoiding the three-course meal, which makes everyone full and sleepy for the evening party and can cause
ABOUT KINGS CHEESE AND WINE
guests to be less interactive. My advice would be to opt for catering that gets your loved ones up. A grazing table not only looks beautiful, but allows guests to start mingling and enjoying the day. Then, keep wowing them with more exciting food options throughout the night. Think doughnut wall, graze charcuterie cones, or our rustic cheese wall for the ultimate wow factor.
Kings Cheese and Wine located in Northwich, Cheshire, specialises in curating locally-sourced cheeses and carefully selected wines from around the world, with luxury packages delivered straight to your door. The team can cater for weddings of any size and offer a host of different options from wedding breakfast baskets to grazing tables. Check out the mouthwatering cheese wall, which allows you to choose from a range of cheeses and chutneys to make the wall tailored to your tastes. It’s a terrific talking point and a delicious snack station, on hand to keep tummies happy and fuelled for the dancefloor. We’re obsessed! 07809 109 524 | www.kingscheeseandwine.co.uk
FOOD AS THEATRE
Your wedding breakfast will constitute a significant portion of your day, so why not have it work even harder for you and bring an element of entertainment too? Singing waiters are oh-so popular across our region thanks to such talented local titans as Singing Waiters in the UK (https://singingwaitersintheuk.com) and Silver Service Singers (https://silverservicesingers.com). Part shock-and-awe, part floor show, part audience participation extravaganza they’ll certainly ensure your wedding breakfast is one to remember.
Sharing food is a fantastic way to ensure your guests interact whether they’re seated at round tables, banqueting style or even if there’s no seating plan. This style of dining creates a wonderful sense of community as they pass dishes between them or break the ice with a friendly, “Ooh have you tried that?” Have them provide their own entertainment or theatre with a roast as a brave representative from each table dons an apron and chef’s hat to carve and serve the joint.
When it comes to the bar, why not see if you can hire a professional trained in the art of flair bartending to mix and serve your cocktails? Guests will visit again and again, if only to watch the magic happen!

FESTIVE FLOWERS
How can we give our reception
flowers a Christmassy vibe?
Christmas is truly magical and, like many couples, I love it! If you’re after a festive vibe, draw inspiration from how you decorate your own home during the holiday season: the palette, style and scent. Take the elements you love and ask your floral designer to combine them for your special day to make it truly personalised to you.
I’d also suggest embracing seasonal florals such as berries, waxflowers, and lush foliage, which look amazing with candles or twinkly lights. This is the idea we went with for the wedding pictured. We layered the tables with drapes, foliage garlands, pea lights and candles to create the mood, keeping it cosy. The favours were dried lavender garlands with handmade clay stars, which guests could hang on their trees for years to come, remembering the special occasion.
If you get married at Christmas, it’s important to consider the flower cost, as they’re in demand at this time of year, so prices can increase significantly. It’s also worth checking your venue’s colour palette, and ensure it complements your chosen scheme. There’s nothing worse than clashing styles.

ALL HEART
How can we make sure our ceremony is a unique reflection of our personalities?
I don’t just learn about your love story, I learn your entire life stories! Every experience, good and bad, not only put you on the path to meeting, but also to being the perfect match for one another. The end result is so worth it. In fact, the greatest compliment I’ve ever received is when a couple’s congregation all assumed I was one of their lifelong friends.
Twelve weeks before the wedding is when I send out your Couple’s Workbook. It’s a great date-night opportunity, allowing you to reminisce about all those relationship and milestone moments. It was designed with a relationship psychologist to be purposefully emotionally triggering but in the most wonderful way. Eight weeks before the big day, we design the ceremony running order and four weeks ahead we write vows. It’s also at this point I’ll send out some self-care treats and arrange a wellness session if you’re feeling the pressure of planning.
Your ceremony will set the tone for the rest of the day. A wedding will likely be the one and only time in your lives that you’ll have everyone you care about in the same place at the same time. It’s so important to evoke emotion, excitement and a happy mindset to ensure everyone has the time of their lives; and that starts at the heart of your day, your highly-personal ceremony.

73 EXPERT ADVICE
IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK
A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS!
What can we add to our barn-venue wedding celebration to give it a warm and cosy Christmas feel?
Taking inspiration from the sights and sounds of the season can make your winter reception shine. Achieve warmth with a rich feature colour in your décor, such as burgundy or forest green with glittering gold accents. Plus, nothing evokes rustic charm in a barn space like foliage to bring the outside in. Add some delicate mistletoe or eucalyptus to tables, or go all-out with a dazzling Christmas tree.
There’s plenty of time to pop champagne throughout your big day, so why not offer the warmest welcome to your guests with a glass of mulled wine or a boozy hot chocolate on arrival?
The soundtrack to your celebration can elevate the occasion: an acoustic live act or playlist featuring romantic guitar covers of your favourite Christmas tunes is a subtle way to spread the festive cheer.
Once daylight gives way to the dark of a winter’s evening, there’s no better décor accent than candlelight. You don’t have to be limited to adorning your tables either: floating tea lights from centrepieces and stacks of pillar candles around your reception will amplify the romance and warmth of your gathering.
A LIFELONG COMMITMENT
We both have jobs where we work with our hands and are a bit worried about our wedding rings standing the test of time. What would you recommend?
There are two points to consider when choosing wedding bands, the metal itself and the thickness of it. With 18ct and 9ct white gold, the bands are rhodium plated to give them their high shine finish and this is something that needs to be maintained. So, if you’re in a job where you’re using your hands a lot or using alcohol sanitizer gels, then I’d suggest staying away from this material. It’s worth considering a brushed finish to the outside of your band to make any scratches less noticeable, this is especially popular with gents’ bands as they’re usually wider.
If your budget allows, then platinum is an excellent metal for a wedding band, as it’s hard wearing, dense and naturally white. It also polishes beautifully if scratched. However, if you’d prefer a yellow gold or rose gold, these are still perfect for a wedding band, but I’d recommend considering at least a medium-weight band.
Remember, it’s one of the few items you’ll ever buy in life that you’ll use and wear every day, so really consider the ring and your budget carefully before buying.

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals
RED HOT
We’ve opted for a vintage vibe for our wedding and I’m wearing a tea-length dress. How can I wear my make-up to complement the theme?
Sarah says: A vintage make-up look is truly timeless, thanks to its iconic flick of black eyeliner and red-lip combo. A semi-matte base and medium to full coverage foundation gives us a flawless 50s face when followed with a pressed or loose powder to set. The classic liner can be tailored to different eye shapes and will define and brighten your eyes. This looks amazing in pictures! Make sure you use a waterproof eyeliner, so that it’s smudge-, sweat- and tear-proof! Liquid liner can be a tricky one to master, but a gel or pencil version can be easier to control keeping your flick nice and neat. Have a cotton bud to hand to clean up just in case.
Lipstick has to be the classic 1950s red. A true matte red adds glamour and style to your make-up look. In my experience this looks perfect with white or ivory dresses, brightening your whole face, making your eyes sparkle and teeth look whiter. If you’re into the idea of rocking a red lip, but aren’t sure which hue is for you, try a few shades before your big day to find the one you feel most confident in and ask your make-up artist to test some at your trial.
You’ll need a lip product that’s going to stay put throughout your big day. I’d recommend fully colouring in your lips with the matching lip liner first, then applying your lipstick over the top. For a modern vintage look try MAC’s So Chaud.
FROCK THE FESTIVITIES
I’d love to include a subtle nod to the festive season in my gown, without going overboard! Do you have any suggestions?
Ali says: You may be wary of your wedding becoming lost amid the seasonal decorations and activities, but there are ways of acknowledging the spirit of the season, without turning your big-day into Father Christmas’ grotto!
Colour schemes can play a wonderful part – don’t just think of the traditional red, gold, green of the Victorian Christmas. How about something more subdued? Frosty palettes such as pale blues, silver, pewter, pastel pinks and even the palest of greens can look stunning together.
You could use a favourite Christmas tree decoration as a bouquet charm, this could be really poignant if it’s a family heirloom. Perhaps you could incorporate a splash of the season into something usually unseen. I’m thinking of an embroidered wedding dress appliqué sewn into the lining of your gown. Or maybe your underskirt or shoes could bring a festive flash of colour. CONTACT OUR EXPERTS

LUXURY BEAUTY LIVE
The Bridal Beauty Festival takes place twiceyearly in the heart of London and features many of the beauty and wellness world’s biggest brands, all there to talk to you about you and your wedding. With live workshops, expert talks, guest appearances and even incredible live music, it’s the place to be if you’re thinking about your big-day look.
I visited the event in September at the luxurious Rosewood London and it was packed with plenty of my favourite brands. On the beauty and cosmetics side there were such titans as Charlotte Tilbury, Pixi, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown, while Penhaligons and The Wedding Scent Edit were on hand to talk big-day fragrances. The latter showcased an impressive array of highend perfumes from brands such as Juliette has a gun Parfums, Parle Moi De Parfum, Atelier Materi, Maison Crivelli and Mizensir. They were arranged in an inspired edit according to your wedding day vibe, be it elegant, beach, boho and more. I took home a sample of Une Tonne De Roses by Parle Moi De Parfum and have been receiving complements every time I wear it – highly recommended. In fact, I’m a huge fan of floral fragrances and also fell in love with Penhaligons’ Elisabethan Rose.
Experts were on hand from each brand offering complimentary makeovers, trials and tips for those with questions. I couldn’t tear myself away from the programme of talks taking place throughout the day. These included A Pixi Perfect Glowing Bridal Masterclass, Bridal Scenting with Carolina Herrera, Create a Radiant Wedding-Day Look with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and Beauty Complex: Skin, Hair and Nails with Dr Anita. I learnt a thing or two myself! My top tip gathered on the day was to always look down into a mirror when applying mascara. You’ll catch more of your lashes and are far less likely to get product all over your eyelid.
Check out the video above for some masterclass inspiration from Carolina Herrera and Bobbi Brown, and look out for the super-stylish customisable lipsticks from the new Caroline Herrera make-up range. You can choose your own cap design, bangle, charm and tassel for the ultimate wedding-day handbag accessory for on-the-day touch ups.
The next Bridal Beauty Festival is due to take place in October 2023, so keep an eye on the website for tickets to this must-visit event, www.thebridalbeautyfestival.com

PEEL POWER
Dr. Craft launched its sustainable mandarin skincare range recently and what makes this a world first is the use of mandarin peel. There’s currently no commercial use for it meaning 10 million tonnes are incinerated and wasted annually. However, the range’s creator, Professor Richard Blackburn, an expert in green chemistry, has been able to harvest the peel’s extract and produce this exciting range of products including the Soothing Cream Cleanser (£18), Gentle Brightening Exfoliator (£20), Purifying Toning Mist (£18), and Antioxidant Rescue Serum (£26). Bioflavonoid ingredients promote skin repair, soothe the complexion and have anti-inflammatory benefits. They also prevent oxidative stress, a type of environmental skin damage caused by pollution and UV rays. Find out more at https://drcraft.co.uk
KIND AND CARING
Our skin is the largest organ in the body and the first line of defence from environmental threats and lifestyle stress, but its barrier is a delicate balance of natural lipids, which without care, can become compromised. Olverum’s diligently-crafted solution to effective, gentle cleansing is a combination of botanical mastery and scientific know-how. The new Body Cleanser contains an innovative formula that’s been five years in development. Created for dry or dehydrated skin, it’s soap and sulphate-free and features a complex of five mild surfactants, derived from sugar, amino acids and responsibly-sourced coconut and palm. It turns into a dense, luxurious lather when wet and cleanses the body while respecting the skin, to leave it soft, supple and nourished with avocado oil. What’s more, its heavenly aromatic blend of essential oils, synonymous with Olverum’s hero products, helps to ease stress and relax tension. £26.50, www.olverum.com

A RESTORATIVE SLEEP
It’s a well-know fact when it comes to skin that sleep is a great beauty ally, but did you know this also applies to our hair? During the night, the release of the hormone melatonin allows our tresses, as well as our skin, to regenerate. Consequently, its in ideal condition to receive a stronger dose of nutrition than during the day and so your night-time routine is essential.
Christophe Robin has developed a new nighttime ritual composed of two treatments targeting different types of damaged hair: The Night Recovery Cream with White Lotus Flower formulated for fine to medium damaged hair, and the Night Recover Monoi with White Lotus Flower for medium to thick damaged hair. Apply to dry, freshly brushed locks before you going to bed, working in sections from root to end. Wrap, leave overnight and rinse and shampoo in the morning, by which time the beauty of your hair, deeply nourished, is revealed. £35, www.christopherobin.com
WASTE NOT, WANT NOT
After agriculture the beauty industry uses the most water. On average a bottle of shampoo contains 70 per cent water with around 90 per cent in conditioner. So, pioneering new beauty brand We Are Concentrate is on a mission to create sustainable and essential products using as little water and plastic as possible. No water is added to the production process and with only a marble-sized amount needed per hair wash, these concentrated pastes contain all the actives and benefits of traditional haircare products, without any of the added water. Plus, to make sure nothing goes to waste, the tubes can be paired with a squeezer and shower hanger to ensure every last drop is used. We Are Concentrate Shampoo and Conditioner are both priced at £14 and can be found at www.weareconcentrate.com
AN EYE FOR ROMANCE

Inspired by all things romance and love, these shadows evoke passion with complementary warm pinks, cherry-hues and deep burgundies taking you all the way from fun and flirty to sultry siren. Meanwhile, the formula means the product glides on with ease, and the ultrapigmented rich tones give minimum fall out and maximum impact. £69, www.karlastore.co.uk

Continuing the no-filter beauty revolution, Sisley has revealed a new concealer. Hailed as a one-of-a-kind product it offers a new way to enhance natural beauty. The texture offers lightweight full coverage that blends in so well it’s virtually undetectable, and the smart doubleended format features a fine tip for precise application with a foam tip for blending. Its soft-focus effect and immediate radiance leave the skin looking more even and disguise any pigmentation flaws. So you can say “so long” to dilated pores, spots, fine lines, roughness, dark spots and redness. SKIN FOOD
Discover how to achieve that much-desired bridal glow the natural way, through a healthy diet of skin-loving foods
Flawless, blemish-free skin is high on the priority list for many brides wanting to look and feel their big-day best. There’s a world of popular skincare advice out there from variations on the daily three-step routine to alternative products, but the impact that food has on our long-term skin health is often overlooked.
Healthy skin is a sign of a healthy body so it’s worth knowing what foods can help protect, nourish and encourage a gorgeous complexion. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more. Here, they share their skin-loving food suggestions to help you glow from the inside out.
BERRIES
Berries such as blackberries, blueberries, acia and strawberries are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. A rich source of antioxidants and vitamins, consuming a handful of these little treasures regularly can help reduce oxidative damage that may contribute to signs of ageing. Mix up the colour and types you eat to get a variety of phytonutrients.
OLIVE OIL
Fats are often associated with high cholesterol and weight gain, however certain fats are essential for good health, namely Omega 3 and 6 found in olive oil. With its anti-inflammatory properties it can help to calm damage in the body, boost brain health, contribute to effective hormone production and maintain healthy cell function, while supporting the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it looking dewy and nourished.
NUTS AND SEEDS
Vitamin E is widely used in skincare products due to its powerful antioxidant capabilities. It does this by safely trapping free radicals that otherwise cause damage within the body. By acting as a mediator between harmful substances and our natural defence systems, it can help calm irritation and redness, prevent blemishes and protect against environmental damage. The oils naturally found in sunflower seeds along with other nuts and seeds such as almonds and pumpkin seeds, are a great source of vitamin E for the skin.
CARROTS
The chemical compound or phytonutrient that gives carrots their vibrant colour is known as carotene, a powerful antioxidant. This is a natural form of vitamin A that supports the growth and quality of new cells, contributing to healthy skin cell renewal and helping to achieve that post-facial glow. When eaten with a healthy fat such as butter or olive oil, carrots will help the body to absorb vitamin A more efficiently.
TURMERIC
One of the best-known superfoods, turmeric is a powerhouse of medicinal properties beyond skin care. It’s a great spice to include in meals or hot drinks in the winter to fight against infection. Interestingly, it’s a traditional custom for an Indian bride to have a paste made with turmeric applied to her skin, helping to promote a calm, natural glow for the main event. Turmeric is also a great natural remedy sometimes used topically to treat skin blemishes and acne.
ROCKET
Rough, dry, congested skin may be a sign of toxin build up. Cruciferous vegetables such as rocket, aid the liver to detoxify the body and help eliminate the build up of toxins that can present as outbreaks on the skin. Dark greens such as rocket also contain chlorophyll, which is also one of the best-known antioxidants found in food, further protecting the skin from breakouts and damage.
CUCUMBER
Foods that are high in water such as cucumber, are a great way to keep the body hydrated. Water helps the body to naturally flush away toxins that can result in breakouts if left harbouring. Water also aids the gut in functioning normally and prevents constipation, which if left unmanaged, has direct implications with the skin. Other foods that are high in water and will help you to help stay hydrated include watermelon, grapefruit, grapes and celery. What’s more, these foods also contain fibre that further support gut health, and vitamin C to help brighten and protect the skin further.

HONEYMOON NEWS 91
The Standard
Greece is
Santorini is often referred to as the supermodel of the Greek islands and I can see why. Surrounded by the inviting Aegean Sea, it’s reached by direct flights from the UK or a short 45-minute flight from Athens Airport. It can also be accessed by boat from Piraeus Port for island-hopping honeymooners wanting to escape to the sun. On arrival, Europe’s most glamorous getaway greets visitors with unbeatable views and the famous white-washed landscape dotted with the instantly recognisable blue domes on the many chapels and churches that are perched on the steep Caldera cliffs.
VILLA WITH A VIEW
Hidden down an accessible track off the main road linking the Insta-worthy town of Oia to the capital, Fira, sits Villa Mellow, one of more than 500 luxury vacation rental villas located in a choice of more than 25 dreamy destinations offered by The Greek Villas. Promising privacy, it’s perfect for honeymooners wanting to get away from it all. The authentic architectural design is built in the island’s signature style with sunny bursts of yellow cheerfully decorating the exterior. The fully furnished interior enjoys a pop-art vibe created through playful splashes of colour in the living room, on the mezzanine level (which provides a great snug area) and in the kitchen. It sleeps up to six people in three spacious bedrooms with the master one (which was my weekend hideout) commanding unrivalled sea views and doors leading to the patio. It’s the perfect place if you want to enjoy a family-moon or holiday with friends.
I couldn’t wait to take a dip in the heated infinity swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, both perched on the cliff edge, and laze on the comfortable sun loungers perfectly placed to admire the view stretching across to the town of Imerovigli. There’s even a spectacular wedding arch above the
patio for couples wishing to marry in Greece and enjoy their honeymoon at the villa (civil ceremonies can take place here with up to 70 guests seated around it and music and dancing can be enjoyed into the early hours).
WISH YOU WERE HERE
Eager to explore, I headed straight to the tourist hotspot of Oia to witness one of the world-renowned sunsets I had heard so much about. To grab a great spot at the ruins of the castle of Agios Nikolaos or beside the Glitzy Windmill, be prepared to set off early. Don’t forget the essentials - a glass of Ouzo (a Greek aperitif) or a local beer!
The winding narrow marble streets in Oia are home to high-end restaurants, traditional tavernas and designer boutiques and the best time to visit is in May or October when it isn’t too crowded. Visitors wanting to hike from here to Fira can follow the 6.5-mile path (stopping for a picnic or lunch at the Avocado restaurant for some tasty Mediterranean cuisine) while those looking for a more laid-back vacation (yes, that’s me!) can hire a car or a quad (or even book a one-hour donkey ride) to see this volcanic island.
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
I was very impressed by the private 24-hour, hotel-standard service at the villa meaning that I didn’t need to lift a finger. My host was Michael who prepared a fresh Greek breakfast every morning that I enjoyed outside on the patio (dinner cooked on-site in the outdoor oven was also an option).
Those
Gino and Fred Go Greek is another option but getting there isn’t for the faint-hearted with the main access being down more than 270 steps. It’s well worth it though to dine on the crystal-clear water’s edge surrounded by traditional fishing boats. A highlight for me was the cuttlefish, homemade tzatziki and saganaki.
Party-lovers should head to Fira while those wanting another spectacular sunset from a different angle across Fira and Oia should book a table at the recently opened wine bar and restaurant Madame Sousou located in Pyrgos where they make their own wine (and gin) and serve tasty small tapas plates chosen around the wine varieties. The wine cellar itself is impressive, built into a cave. Also in Pyrgos is the vintage-inspired Agaze bistro and deli offering traditional greek flavours in a cosy atmosphere.

From the moment I arrived in Athens, a three-and-a-half hour flight from London, the energy of this bustling city greeted me. A myriad of vibrant streets crammed with landmarks promised to fill my Insta feed, from the iconic Acropolis of Athens (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) to the Plaka district, the oldest in Athens that lies beneath the Acropolis where the cobbled streets are filled with eclectic shops and rooftop restaurants. Being a shopper, I loved the boutiques in the fashion district and the markets (especially the flea market, where a romantic mix of old meets new). May is a great time to visit when the weather is warm (the average temperature is 25 degrees) but the intense heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended.
PERFECT PAMPER
After a busy day spent sightseeing, I was booked into the SPA Suite, an oasis of calm in the middle of this bustling mecca offering an extensive treatment menu. With a focus on wellness, I felt rejuvenated after a relaxing full-body massage using Elemis products followed by a steam bath. There’s also a 24-hour Gym Suite, where guests can enjoy pilates and rooftop yoga is also offered.
A WARM WELCOME
Nestled in the heart of this capital city opposite Old Parliament House sits the five-star hotel xenodocheio Milos. I was excited to visit this boutique property, a food destination which is the first luxury gastronomy hotel of the world-renowned Greek restaurant Estiatorio Milos. It boasts 43 stylish rooms and suites including the 501 Milos Terrace Suite which was my home-from-home for the night. The highlight of this wonderful space is the private rooftop terrace complete with a jacuzzi and far-flung views, the ideal spot to soak up summer in the city.
DINE IN STYLE
The Estiatorio Milos restaurant situated on the ground floor of this popular hotel is well-known on the Athens dining scene for its fantastic Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant offers private dining events, an all-day al fresco sidewalk cafe bar located just outside on the terrace and there’s
soon to be an oyster bar. It has sister properties in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Cabos, Montreal and London where the extensive seafood menu tantalises tastebuds with delicious dishes made using only the freshest and finest ingredients from the Greek islands. Founder and chef Costas Spiliadis has personally chosen the fishermen and farmers to work with. A highlight for me was the sashimi and ceviche followed by the lightly fried zucchini and eggplant before the grilled fish of the day was served. For dessert, I tucked into a mouth-watering bitter chocolate tartrate served with homemade cream washed down with a glass of delicious Cretan Vorinos wine.

THE LAKES In love with
A myriad of delights lie in wait in The Lake District for UK honeymooners
The four-star Belsfield Hotel, located mere moments from the charming town centre in Bowness-on-Windermere, exudes class, sophistication and historical splendour. From its enviable spot on the banks of Lake Windermere, there can surely be nowhere better to enjoy the rest, relaxation and beauty of the area cocooned in sheer luxury. Whether you’re looking for an active honeymoon break filled with hiking and outdoor adventure; or a peaceful, romantic escape, the Hotel offers the perfect base. County Wedding Magazines’ deputy managing editor, Kelly Andrews, paid a visit to find out more.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The Lake District is a long old drive from CWM’s Essex HQ, so the eventual sight of The Belsfield’s impressive facade, was welcome indeed. The perfect marriage of the historical and ultra-modern immediately had my attention. We were met in the car park by charming hotel porter Sean, who gave us one of the warmest welcomes I’ve ever received and kindly waited for us to check in before showing us up to our room. He wouldn’t hear of us carrying even one item of luggage, so we knew within the first moments of our stay that we were going to be in good hands here. Sean’s wasn’t the only welcome we received though, as Lake
Windermere itself already had this in hand. The moment we set foot inside the reception area, it became immediately obvious to me why its architect chose to construct it from glass, anything else would have been a travesty. My breath was literally taken away. Through the open double doors directly opposite me was one of the most incredible views I’ve ever witnessed. The vast expanse of the Lake glistening in the late summer sunshine and the rolling hills and peaks partially shrouded in mist. I didn’t want to tear my eyes away, so it was fortunate indeed that we’d been treated to one of The Belsfield’s showstopping suites complete with Lake view.
HOME AWAY FROM HOME Mum and I were like kids in a sweet shop once Sean had wished us a pleasant stay, closed the door of our suite behind him and left us, such were the levels of excitement already reached thanks to our stunning surroundings – both inside and out. By the time reception called to ask if everything was ok, we’d already decided we wanted to move in... permanently! While the best way I can think to describe it is a home away from home, that’s not entirely accurate as I can only dream that my home was this stylish and luxurious! Indeed, each of the designer rooms features elegant furnishings and delightful fabrics. From the oversized sofa and antiqued chest coffee table, to the oh-so comfortable super king size bed and huge TV, we were hooked. I’d only just managed to tear myself away from the window and that view when it was time to head down for dinner.
A TASTE OF THE LAKE DISTRICT
Dining at The Belsfield Restaurant & Brasserie offers a treat for the taste buds. A fine-dining experience sure to delight even the most committed of foodies, the varied and flavour-packed menu includes such seasonal dishes as butternut squash and pine nut pithivier; slow braised shoulder of lamb; and spring pea and goats cheese risotto.
Like everything else here, dinner is an experience. The staff excel at making their guests feel welcome and like VIPs. Shown to a table in the box bay window, surely the best seat in the house, we settled into our armchair-like seats looking out at that incredible view as we ate. As is the case throughout the hotel, the muted, neutral tones of the décor in the restaurant play a huge part in its calming vibe and don’t compete with the
94
idyllic surroundings, where Mother Nature does all the talking. As the sun set behind the hills and mist rolled in over the Lake we opened our menus and sipped our wine, the stresses of the motorway now a distant memory.
I opted to start my meal with the crispy pork belly with black pudding and cider cream sauce – so good I ordered it again the following night! This was followed by the main course of Cumberland sausage with whole grain mustard mash, pickled red cabbage and red wine jus. Being a cheese fanatic, I finished with a selection of local and British cheeses, which were paired with artisan biscuits, chutney, celery and grapes. But sweet treats on the menu included glazed lemon tart, date pudding and strawberry and mascarpone cheesecake. Every mouthful was a joy and the service was impeccable.
Located at the heart of the hotel is the glamorous Lounge Bar. With a warm and inviting ambience it also boasts a suite of further immaculately decorated lounges, where you can take your drink and relax overlooking Lake Windermere. That’s just what we did as we made the most of the last rays of sunshine dancing on the Lake and enjoying our extremely delicious chocolatinis (vanilla vodka, Baileys and crème de cacao –highly recommended). The smallest of the lounges we found boasted décor that reminded me of a stately home’s study. I could imagine Austen’s Mr Bennett sitting there reading a book while taking refuge from Mrs Bennett’s ‘nerves.’
Breakfast too is served in the restaurant. A welcome combination of continental self service and hot food table service, the first meal of the day is just the sort of hearty fare you’d hope to fill up on before heading out for a day exploring. Again it bears repeating how great the staff are. We were looked after by the lovely Dominika, who put a smile on our faces with her friendly manner.
THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE
After a restful night’s sleep we headed out of the Hotel via it’s rear terrace, which brings you straight out to Bowness’ waterfront, where we boarded a steamer for a half-lake cruise. Windermere Lake Cruises offers an extensive programme of options when it comes to cruising the lake, whether you want the scenic option, the full tour or island exploration. There are also combined tickets where you can incorporate another attraction. We opted for the cruise and steam train, which allowed us to see and experience much of the local area in the short amount of time we had. The steamer let us off at the Lakeside Pier and we took The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Heritage Railway to its terminus in Haverthwaite. Here, there’s a station tea room and gift shop, which we enjoyed before heading back to make our connection back at the pier.
We returned to Bowness and jumped in the car to Hill Top in Sawrey near Hawkshead, the 17th-century farmhouse once home to Beatrix Potter. It was the house she bought with the royalties from the first of her books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and is well worth a visit. Not only is the house a time capsule containing many of the author’s belongings, the village itself offers a picture-perfect spot for a romantic stroll.
Keen for more of Miss Potter we wended our way back around the Lake to the opposite side and Bowness. A mere five-minute walk from
The Belsfield you’ll find The World of Beatrix Potter. Primarily a family attraction it’s nevertheless well worth a visit for bigger kids for whom the tales of Peter and friends occupy a special place in the heart. These enchanting stories are brought to life in a magical recreation of the characters and their antics as you get to meet many of the famous furry faces we all know and love from our childhoods.
Welcomed back to the hotel by charming manager Mark, who was surprised to hear about all that we’d packed into one day, I realised just how much I appreciated the location. Another string to The Belsfield’s bow is its location – right in the centre of Windermere’s eastern shore it’s at the heart of the action and with so much to see and do within easy reach. So, it’s definitely possible to get the most out of your honeymoon here whatever you decide to make of it.
With hearts heavy at the thought of leaving the hotel we’d fallen head over heels in love with, we bundled our luggage into the car the following morning and made for home, having resolved to be back at the first possible opportunity.
STEEPED IN HISTORY
Built in the 19th century for the Baroness Von Sternberg, the building’s most well-known former owner was Henry Schneider, director of the steel works at Barrow, the Barrow Flax and Jute Works and the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, who established his country residence at the Belsfield in 1869. His departure from the house early each morning was preceded by his butlers and staff descending the lawns to the lakeside carrying the entree dishes for his English Breakfast.
The house became a hotel in 1892 and between 1910 and 1911 drastic alterations were made, when an entire storey was added between the existing first and second floors. During the Second World War the Hotel was requisitioned as a training centre for WRAF officers.
