Walking on sunshine
Icannotbelieve that my dear friends Melissa and Dave have just celebrated their first anniversary! Where on earth did that year go? For those of you who are new to the magazine and, possibly happily for you, missed my endless and excited rambles about preparing to be a bridesmaid for fellow CWM editor Melissa, I hope you’ll indulge me as I reminisce!
Not wanting to start out on a negative note, but hands up: I hate the summer. It’s just too hot! Many a time I’ve contemplated taking a summer home in Iceland, but alas the budget doesn’t permit. But in 2022, my season horribilis was made all the merrier by the excitement of a wedding. Sage green and blush pink was the palette of choice, while the vibe was rustic. Still on trend this year, I would hazard to say that it’s a timeless theme. On 22nd July, we’d just about made it through the hottest days of the year, when thank goodness, the temperatures started to cool to a bearable level. An al fresco ceremony, a reception with the venues’ folding doors flung open, and some memorable moments for the newlyweds spent with their photographer in the nearby cornfields during golden hour: It was all a summer wedding should be, and more.

I’ll admit to liking one thing about the season though, and it came into play on Melissa and Dave’s big day, as indeed it would at any wonderful summer wedding. First and foremost, it’s the long days. Making the best of the great outdoors is something we can do to the max at this time of year. There are no more hours in the day, of course, but somehow it feels like there are, which is a huge plus when you’re celebrating such a momentous occasion. So, if you’re thinking about hosting your entire day outside, you won’t want to miss the advice of our experts over in Hot Topic from page 53. Or if you want to at least have the option to spill out of your venue and into some glorious surroundings, check out our country havens venue feature from page 21.
I hope you find inspiration aplenty among the pages of our summer issue. And, as ever, enjoy and keeeep planning!

26 DANCING IN THE MOONLIGHT
Charvi and Josh’s DJ played a combination of Western and Indian hits keeping the dancefloor packed. “The Indian contingent enjoyed teaching the English guests a thing or two about dancing!” the bride told us.
It’d been a childhood dream for bride Ellen to have a horsedrawn carriage at her wedding. “Riding through the village and having people wave to us like royalty was such a special touch,” she says. 45 WHAT A STUNNER I can’t get enough of the images from this issue’s stunning styled shoot. The fashion-forward dresses, the multi-tonal pink palette... it’s everything!

We love weddings!
We really do. Which is lucky, because we conduct around 3000 every year. With a team of over 100 registrars, ceremony officers and support staff, you can relax knowing the essential "I Do" part of your day is covered. Each of our 6 districts across Somerset & North Somerset has its very own ceremony team, so we all get to know our local venues and how they like to run their events. Our professional celebrants are fully trained to make sure all the legal aspects of your ceremony are carried out. Not only that, they also adapt our beautiful ceremony script to add those special personalised elements that will make your day unique. You want to be given away by your mum, pause for a moment of remembrance for a loved one who can't be there, or exchange necklaces instead of rings? No problem - it's your day and we want it to be truly memorable.
How to do it
Marriage or Civil Partnership - work out which one is the right fit for you. We are happy to perform either ceremony, and there's more info about the differences on our website if you're unsure.
Choose your venue. This really is key. You'll need to book a registrar in the district where the venue is, even if you live elsewhere. We'll need to know exactly where the venue is to book the right team.
Pick a date and time. We do normally have teams available, even on our busiest days, but it might need to be a little earlier or later than you were planning. That said, the vast majority of our couples do get their first choice Book that registrar! We take bookings up to 2 years in advance here in Somerset, though other districts may vary. Fill in our request form online and we'll phone you back to make sure it's in the diary and you know what to do next.
We know you'll be busy contacting florists and bakers and DJs and caterers for a while but put a reminder on your calendar to give notice a bit nearer the big day. This is the appointment where you visit your local registrar in your home district with your ID documents to sort out the legal stuff. It needs to happen at least 28 days in advance, but we recommend between 3 and 6 months before. If it's with us, you can book your own appointment on our website. If it's in another district, just get in touch with the registration service through your local council website and they will send us the paperwork when it's all done, ready for your ceremony.
Ceremony planning is the final step. We need your choices around 1 month before the big day so we can get to work personalising your ceremony. Readings, music, vows and any special requests - just download the form along with our guidance pack and email it back to us. It really is simple. Our main requirement is that there can't be any religious content at all. There's just a couple of lines that you have to include to make it all legal, but otherwise you can get creative with your own ring vows.
Turn up on the day and say yes - Congratulations!!!
Our fabulous venues are really something else. We have over 110 locations across the region licensed for civil ceremonies, and there is something for every style and budget. Country houses and historic castles, rustic farms and boho barns, cosy inns and boutique hotels. What takes your fancy? There are some really quirky gems too, like Secret World Animal Sanctuary, Haynes Motor Museum, Wookey Hole Caves and the iconic piers at Weston and Clevedon. Browse the full list in our online directory to make sure you don't miss out on that perfect spot, and check our supplier directory for all the extras that will complete your day.
Booking is really simple. Just fill in a request form on our website when you know when and where you want to have your celebrations. We'll call you back to check the details and run through next steps. Even better, our fees are simple and straightforward toono hidden extras like cancellation fees, amendment charges or non-refundable deposits. We understand how complicated organising a wedding day can be, so we aim to make it as easy as possible.
We get so many queries about what to do and where to start - don't worry! Most people have never done this before either, and we're happy to walk you through it all.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY
This summer, husband and wife team Victoria Collins and chef Alasdair Clifford are celebrating five years since taking over the reins of their critically-acclaimed restaurant and pub with rooms, The Barrington Boar. The team recently acquired a large site for development adjacent to the venue and are celebrating the anniversary by commencing work on it. Baker’s Farm, a 3,000 plus sq ft period farmhouse is set on a plot of approximately 0.38 acres of South Somerset land and features a large garden and several outbuildings including a former cider barn and hayloft. Subject to planning, the couple hope to build a bakery, further accommodation and a market garden, which will supply Clifford’s kitchen.
The Barrington Boar loves to host weddings and its new Private Dining Room is perfect for rehearsal dinners. Complete with its own small events bars, this versatile space is ideal for pre-wedding get-togethers and can seat up to 24 guests. You’ll be treated to a meal to remember as the restaurant and pub has recently featured in The Michelin Guide United Kingdom 2023, Harden’s Guide, and Top 100 Gastro Pubs. It was also a finalist at the 2023 Trencherman’s Awards for Best Pub.

Montigo Resorts, Somerset, at Charlton House has opened in the idyllic market town of Shepton Mallet, in the Mendip District of Somerset. Mere moments away from the rolling hills of Frome, Wells and Glastonbury, the hotel is a discreet country retreat with a relaxed, informal vibe.
The opening ceremony was graced by the likes of the Mayor of Glastonbury, Cllr Indra Donfrancesco, Chairman of The Street Parish Council, Cllr Bryan Knickerbocker, and team Your Bristol & Somerset Wedding! We were super-excited to roll into town to check out this stunning Regency-period estate, featuring the historical 28-room country house hotel and spa, three restaurants, and stunning gardens. The venue is currently heralding a new future following its recent acquisition by luxury hospitality experts KOP Limited, and it was an honour to celebrate with the team.
Speaking at the opening, Ms Chih Ching ONG, executive chairman and executive director of KOP Limited, said: “We’re thrilled to be introducing Montigo Resorts’ warm, welcoming blend of excellence in Asian hospitality to Somerset, where our guests will feel cherished, and pampered for generations to come. Charlton House is an impressive property of distinction, and we’re committed to honouring its history, and working with the local community to thoughtfully restore the estate to its full potential.” Indeed, it’s just this commitment to working with and for the local Shepton Mallet and wider Somerset communities that really struck me during the event, as well as at the incredible Celebration Showcase the following day, packed with local wedding aficionados. Every effort has been made by the new owners to bring Charlton House back to the locals, and I can report that the hospitality is second to none. Since purchasing the estate in March, considerable investment, and effort to improve the facilities has already been made by KOP Limited, using nearby businesses and materials wherever possible with even more stunning restorative refurbishments still to come.
Music to my ears was the fact that the new owners are all-in when it comes to hosting weddings at Charlton House, and it’s such an unbelievably idyllic rural oasis that it would be a waste not to be. With exclusive or non-exclusive use available, we were assured that whatever you want for your wedding here, it’s yours!
The glorious Regency Orangery has spectacularly grand iron windows, stunning chandeliers and elegant parquet flooring, and to
see it decorated to its full breathtaking glory by Sage and Belle at the Showcase was a real wow moment. What’s more, the oh-so pretty and gloriously romantic orchard has created a natural aisle, recognised by the weddings and events team who have set up the dreamy al fresco ceremony area at the end of it.
We wandered along kooky hallways, peeked into sumptuously furnished lounges, and stood in awe of the fabulous bridal suite. Additional on-site experiences include a thermal spa and bathhouse, spa treatments and fitness facilities. You’ll also find effortless access to Somerset’s finest, most creative local artisans for additional distinctive touches for your big day, many of whom we met at the Showcase.
These charming folks couldn’t be more supportive and enthusiastic about the new direction Charlton House is taking. Final refurbishments to the spa are expected to complete by early 2024, and further exciting programmes are in the pipeline including a dog grooming spa in association with dog groomer, Kelly Davis. I for one can’t wait to be back.

Spotlight on... BATH AND MENDIP
Tie the knot in a local hotspot
Charlton House in Shepton Mallet, complete with its Regency grandeur, has greeted many a guest in the years following its conversion from a former family home in the 1960s, including royalty in the shape of the King of Thailand and the Duke of Edinburgh. This history of the building is just as much tied up with the vision of its proprietors, and Montigo Resorts, now at the helm, is working hard to take the venue to even greater heights.
The Regency Orangery boasts spectacularly grand iron window frames and as such it makes a fine backdrop for all parts of your wedding day. However, if al fresco “I dos” are on the cards, the dappled light of the orchard lends itself beautifully to this part of the day. Meanwhile, TIIGO provides a welcome air of informality for barbecues and hog roasts, while the bright and botanical conservatory represents a strong choice for the wedding breakfast.
The team would love nothing more than to lay on a feast for your
guests, which maximises the immense potential of locally-sourced ingredients. Just give them a sense of the direction you’d like to take and they’ll take the reins. Best known for their modern European fare, the team are happy to try their hand at anything from Asian fusion dishes to flamegrilled exotic meats. And don’t even get us started on the talents of the amazing pastry chef!
Exclusive use of the venue is available and when they say “exclusive use,” they mean it! You can turn the venue’s spaces around to suit the various stages of your big day and have family and friends to stay. You can even make use of the spa, wellness, and fitness facilities. Charlton House doesn’t believe in prescriptive packages. There’s only one thing that matters, and that’s you! So, you can have your wedding, your way. Once your guests leave, why not treat yourselves to a spot of rest and recuperation with a quiet mini-moon at the hotel. Then, if you so desire, you can be whisked away to one of Montigo Resorts’ locations in Asia. Picture yourselves reclining on a beach in picturesque Bali, or watching the sun set on Singapore across the straight of Malacca.

I CAPTURE THE
castle
Charvi and Josh had their hearts set on marrying at a castle venue as a nod to their first date
Images courtesy of Jon Warr Photography

Charvi
and Josh met online and soon after organised a first date at Cardiff Castle. They both felt an instant connection that day, enjoying each other’s company and laughing the whole time. “It was like meeting an old friend,” Charvi explains. We fast forward to 2022, and the couple had booked a May Bank Holiday break in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. Charvi had actually asked Josh if he was planning to propose, but he managed to throw her off the scent by bending down on one knee to pick something up, then later to tie his shoelace. Having convinced her it wasn’t going to happen after all, he finally got down on one knee for real back at the AirBnB, and brought out the ring. By this time, Charvi thought it was a joke and was in utter disbelief. He had to physically give her the ring before she’d accept it was real!
As a nod to their first date, the couple decided early on that they wanted to get married in a castle, but were later forced to give up on this dream due to the cost. However, they drove past Branwell Castle one day and immediately fell in love with it. Nestled in the hills of Somerset complete with breathtaking views, it was more intimate than most and they discovered it fit within their budget.
Here, Charvi tells us all about the wonderful wedding day –13th May, 2023...
SETTING THE SCENE
As Charvi is Indian the couple were keen to represent her heritage in their wedding day. On a trip to India in late 2022, they created small boxes in keeping with their blue colour palette and filled them with incense cones. “They worked really well, as when we burnt some of them in the evening, they filled the courtyard with the fragrance of India,” Charvi remembers. The bride’s mum also made table runners and brought them over. There were sashes for the ceremony chair backs too in the same fabric, as well as bags to hold the confetti.
The centrepieces were composed of a range of cut glassware collected from charity shops during the preceding months. These were used to hold candles and flowers, and were surrounded by pebbles. The tables were all named after castles the couple have visited together.
The day’s florals featured a range of blue hues, with the focal points being a beautiful light shade. These ones were silk roses allowing the newlyweds to keep them forever as a memento of the day. Each bridesmaid carried a mini bouquet, while Charvi’s was the main showstopper. Each groomsman wore a buttonhole as did Josh. Flowers were also arranged on the reception tables and ceremony aisle, as well as crowning the wedding arch, beneath which the couple said “I do.” Also adorning the ceremony space were floral displays placed on plinths framing the two at the all-important moment.
As a wedding gift, Josh’s sister baked the wedding cake. It featured three tiers, one of Biscoff, one of salted caramel and one of vegan Oreo for Josh. To accompany it, Charvi and Josh set up bride and groom Beanie Babies in the positions they sit on the sofa at home.
The newlyweds and their guests dined on a wedding breakfast of roast lamb and nut roast. “We felt this fit with the castle banqueting feel we were going for,” Charvi explains.

LOOKING THE PART
The bride wore Hester, a Willowby by Watters gown from the spring 2018 collection. “The dress perfectly fit the castle surroundings, and made me feel like a princess,” Charvi says. Josh’s mum provided her with a freshwater pearl necklace and shoes from her hometown of Jaipur. Charvi’s Honiton lace veil has been in Josh’s family for years, was made by his great grandmother, and has been worn by members of his family across the years, including his mother and sister.
Josh wore a navy suit with floral pocket square and tie to complement the bridal bouquet. He paired this with a waistcoat, and cufflinks gifted to him by his sister. The groomsmen’s suits matched the groom’s, while the bridesmaids were dressed in dusky blue dresses, each in their own style.
CELEBRATE IN STYLE
“Our DJ played both Western and Indian hits, which meshed very well and kept guests dancing for hours,” Charvi says. The newlyweds’ first dance was performed to Makeba by Jain, which many guests commented on as being unusual, but it started the dancing off on the right foot and had everyone itching to join in. This was followed by Mundiya to Bach Ke
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
“I felt shaky in the morning while getting ready, but Josh was surprisingly calm,” Charvi remembers. “It wasn’t until the bridesmaids started to walk down the aisle that he started to well up, and was finally in tears by the time I made my entrance. Then, seeing him, I cried too! It was an incredible feeling, we’ve never experienced such joy and love. For the rest of the day, smiles never left our faces. We experienced pure elation and seeing everyone there celebrating with us really brought joy to our hearts.”
The bride continues, “The speeches were exceptionally well delivered, especially the maid-of-honour, who finally got to tell the embarrassing story about Josh she’d been saving up for exactly that moment. Our suppliers were all fantastic, I don’t think we could have asked for more from them. Our photographer captured the day so perfectly and the venue made everything run smoothly. My make-up and hair ladies made me look better than I could have dreamed! Meanwhile, our florist also did an amazing job elevating the already beautiful venue.”

LOVE YOU
Ellen and Alex’s love story took them from the supermarket aisle to the church aisle
Images courtesy of Louise May Photography
Ellen met Alex at the local supermarket. “I walked past him while he was working and it was love at first sight,” she tells us. We fast forward now to Ellen’s 21st birthday, which she was celebrating with friends and family when Alex handed her a beautiful card asking her to marry him. “He proposed with my grandmother’s ring that she gifted me before she passed away,” Ellen shares.
St George’s Church, Dunster, holds special childhood memories for Ellen, of Christmas and Easter events. So, it was the number one choice for the ceremony location, and with Dunster Tithe Barn nearby it was the perfect location for the celebrations.
Read on as the bride shares her memories of the special day, 21st May 2023, and gives us the lowdown on the preparations...

Dunster every day as a little girl knowing I wanted to get my wedding dress from there. Owner Susan was just magical. I ended up choosing the first dress I put on. Mum couldn’t stop crying! It was off-the-shoulder and just me all over.
Alex says, “I spent quite a while trying to find somewhere that would cater for myself, my groomsmen and best men, and I was so fortunate to have found Clifton Suits, as Andrew and his team were nothing short of amazing. They made the whole process stress-free and very comfortable, and our suits were absolutely spot on.”
I had my veil made longer to trail behind me as I walked down the aisle.
Alex had a three-piece bespoke suit made allowing him to stand apart as man-of-the-moment. It was navy blue with a tweed waistcoat. His groomsmen meanwhile looked dapper in all tweed three-piece suits.
The highlight for me was walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Alex watching me. For Alex it was our first dance, when they announced us as Mr and Mrs Rogers.
I wore Tiana by Margot Bridal. I walked past Parham House Brides in

Riding through the village in the carriage and having people wave to us like royalty was such a special touch.
The centrepieces featured mainly roses, which I adore. The flowers were one of my favourite details of the day, they were magnificent! My grandmother helped us choose them, but she sadly passed before the wedding, which made it so special to have them as part of our day.
We both felt so nervous, and full of butterflies. But there’s no better feeling than knowing you’re going to marry your best friend.
I’ve loved and ridden horses since I was very young, so it had always been a dream to have a horse-drawn carriage on my wedding day.
The food was a massive hit with guests. We chose a roast dinner, which is my all-time favourite meal!
35 REAL WEDDINGS
Prescott Entertainment provided our DJ, Ben. He was fantastic from start to finish. He captured the dancefloor, so by the end of the night everyone was on their feet. He chose the best songs at the best time, it just felt right!
The cake was also decorated with roses. It was chocolate heaven flavour with strawberry and cream, along with a fruit layer and lemon zest.
We went to Kos on honeymoon. We didn’t plan it, but found the perfect destination right by the beach,
My top tip would be to find suppliers you feel comfortable around and make a connection with. This will make your day feel so much more relaxed and it’ll run much more smoothly, especially in the months building up to it.

Love in lilac
Kayleigh and Elliott styled their rustic wedding day in a pretty palette of lilac
Images courtesy of Calum Bradley Photography, Video courtesy of Pixaplace Weddings
Kayleigh and Elliott met 10 years ago, while studying IT at Bridgwater College. Elliott noticed that Kayleigh was quite shy, as she’d hide behind the sleeve of her jumper so that he would copy her and make her laugh. So, he decided to reach out via Twitter.
Six years flew by and Elliott decided he wanted to ask Kayleigh to marry him. He took her to Paignton Beach, which is a place that means a lot to her as her late nan would often take her there for days out. The proposal was a huge surprise for Kayleigh, although
she had wondered why Elliott was so keen to go to the beach at 10am and had to make a last-minute dash to buy a beach mat!
Beautiful venue Hornsbury Mill caught the couple’s eye, as a remote location was just the ticket for them. “As soon as we drove up the gravel drive and saw peacocks roaming around, we knew it was the one,” Kayleigh says. “Then to see the watermill in action just sold it to us even more!”
The date was set for a beautiful springtime wedding on 20th May, 2023. Read on as the bride tells us more...
39 REAL WEDDINGS
I wore Rosa by Morilee. Initially, I wanted a dress with long sleeves, but I instantly fell in love with this one, as it complemented me beautifully and gave me the confidence I didn’t know existed. The sparkles made me feel like a real-life princess!
My maid-of-honour was dressed in a grey lilac gown with a band around the waist, and floral detail on the chest. Our flowergirl wore a white dress with a lilac ribbon around the waist, tied in a bow at the back.
I had a teardrop bouquet with a selection of lilac and purple shades of flowers including roses. The flowergirl, our daughter Sophia, carried a lilac rose with a ribbon on a wand, while the maid-of-honour had a smaller version of mine.
Elliott wore a grey tweed suit with a lilac tie and brown leather shoes. His groomsmen all wore the same.

Creative Collections and the décor team were just incredible, they made our entire day beautiful.
I was so excited all morning and although time was flying by I couldn’t wait to meet my future husband at the altar. Elliott was very nervous to say the least, but he was excited too! He cried multiple times throughout the day, especially when he first saw me walk down the aisle.
We chose to give each guest a scratch card and a shot in little glass bottles with a cork stopper. The flavours were apple and cherry Sourz, as I love them and Elliott’s partial to a scratch card every now and then!
The centrepieces were log slices, which worked for our rustic theme. They were topped with silver vases containing lilac floral arrangements with a lilac runner bunched underneath, all complementing our palette.
Each place name was decorated with lilac flowers in the corner, and a sticker on the back to remind guests of their food choice.
Our cake had two tiers with ombre lilac icing, topped with an arrangement of lilac blooms. The bottom tier was chocolate Guinness with cherry jam and the top was lemon drizzle. We also had four cupcakes for my mum as she has a wheat allergy.
I presented Elliott with a gift of a framed letter from Arsenal Football Club, which made him cry... again!
REAL WEDDINGS 41
The children were given activity packs with colouring, funky glasses, a chocolate bar and bouncy balls, all secured with a lilac ribbon.
We dined on a three-course meal for our wedding breakfast, and enjoyed a buffet in the evening, including quiche, sandwiches, chicken nuggets and more.
Keep calm and let everything fall into place. If it’s not there, it’s not meant to be there.
We had a DJ who played some great hits and was happy to take any requests.
Each of our suppliers went the extra mile. Our videographer and photographer couldn’t have been more helpful. No request was too much for them. They made sure they captured all the special moments.
We went on a mini-moon to Poole in Dorset straight after the wedding for two days. We’ll be going on our honeymoon to Cape Verde later this year.

Pink-city
Inspired by the city of Bath and this year’s Pantone colour of the year, Viva Magenta, this team put together a shoot that made our jaws hit the ground

ROMANCE
The biggest source of inspiration for the team putting together this shoot was the location. Choosing the beautiful city of Bath with its honeycoloured, Georgian buildings and vibrant spirit, meant it’s character needed to flow through the images and No.15 Bath by GuestHouse was the perfect spot. Within walking distance of the city centre, central churches, and the Bath registry office, this luxury boutique hotel can accommodate an intimate wedding reception or city elopement. Taking the lead with the concept and planning of this vibrant shoot, photographer Bo Leray paired the city location with a bright and bold colour palette; and together, a team of local suppliers created a contemporary and romantic theme to excite and inspire. Influenced by
Pantone colour of the year, Viva Magenta, the creatives set to work using varying shades of statement pink and red tones.
Featuring bridal outfits from Love Story Bride’s Amare Collection, the images exude a fashion-forward, yet timeless, appeal that we adore. Meanwhile, the showstopping floral displays created using fragrant roses, delicate cherry blossoms, frilly ranunculus, statement anthuriums and fluffy grasses in an array of pink hues are an incredible sight to behold. Completed with fresh and oh-so on trend tablescapes with pink macarons in place of the traditional wedding cake, everything is decorated with palette perfection; and the bold, modern vibe of the stylish stationery suite is deserving of a frame.

ENTERTAINMENT NATION
www.entertainment-nation.co.uk | 0800 530 0035
Alice from entertainment booking service Entertainment Nation says, “How you want your day to feel is a really important factor when nailing your wedding entertainment. If you have visions of a serene atmosphere with elegant musical backdrops, then a string quartet, singing guitarist or instrumentalist would be ideal to keep the drinks and chatter flowing. However, if something quiet and understated just isn’t your vibe and you’d prefer everyone to be dancing and singing while non-stop partying leads to sore feet in the morning, an awesome pop, indie or rock band is a no-brainer. Alternatively, perhaps a funky soul and disco band would go down a treat with you soul music lovers.
“Want to make a statement at your wedding and make sure it’s unforgettable? Alternative entertainment like singing waiters and DJ live bands, who are known for involving the crowd, are stand-out options for a memorable wedding celebration that’s personal to you. For top advice, recommendations and a really friendly expert team, contact us at

SMOOTH SAX STYLING
LUCY HARVEY VOCALIST & SAXOPHONIST
https://lucyharvey.co.uk | 07764 740 162
Lucy is an award-winning wedding musician who adores the special element live music provides at a wedding. From the ceremony right through the evening entertainment, there are plenty of opportunities to weave music into your day.
Live saxophone is such a trend at the moment, and alongside a DJ it can absolutely bring the Ibiza party vibes to your evening dancefloor or afternoon drinks! Don’t just take our word for it, Lucy’s most recent review from a very happy bride stated: “Lucy absolutely brought the party and the atmosphere she created was better than I ever could have imagined! Apart from marrying my other half, she is the best decision I ever made!”
If club classics aren’t your style though, some chilled soulful ballads on vocals or saxophone can bring a more elegant feel. Or, you could combine a bit of both to keep your guests on their toes!

Lee from The Wedding Players says, “Well, how wedding parties have changed... yet the one most important element is the same: guests just want to relax and have fun.” Since the pandemic, Lee and his team have noticed their couples taking a a far more laidback approach to their entertainment requirements. For example, Lee continues, “Song request lists seem clearer, with a simple brief: Party! We’re free again, and it’s showing with the music choices. There are now fewer obscure requests, which of course helps the party achieve rip-roaring success!”
The Wedding Players is anticipating an even more relaxed vibe to come, whether it’s a DJ outside on a summer’s evening or chilled-out grooves from 7pm to 9pm in late October. “Customers are starting to realise the significance of music programming,” Lee explains. “Respect the time and the mood, and the music will take its own path. We’ll guide it at the right tempo and style towards it’s natural conclusion, the climax of the celebrations.”
Lee has also seen an increase in demand for mini golf at weddings, complete with a garden speaker to the side playing summer music, for that perfect seasonal vibe. “It works, and everyone is happy,” Lee says.

Now, digital caricatures are available for weddings too. Picture a mash-up of a close-up entertainer, a photo booth and a caricaturist! Your loved ones are drawn in full colour on an iPad, taking only five minutes each, and the pictures are then emailed to the guest and printed too. Each participant gets a digital copy for social media and one to show off at the party.
There are options for a fully mobile, mix ‘n’ mingle artist, or a stationary attraction, where the guests can watch as the caricatures are created live on a big screen set up. The caricature templates are fully customisable, with your choice of colour, theme, title or message. They’re also all available after the big day to download, reprint, share, or simply gather together in one group picture.
One of the best in the business, Christian has 20 years experience of entertaining thousands of happy couples and he’s the top choice for many agents and wedding bookers. One of the pioneers of digital caricaturing
in the UK, he was instrumental in turning this new art form into a unique and exciting form of entertainment.

AWARD-WINNING WEDDING SINGER
SAXOPHONE PLAYER
HOT TOPIC: THE GREAT OUTDOORS
This issue, we asked the region’s experts for their advice on planning an outdoor wedding
BE PREPARED
Simone Parkinson, sales and marketing manager from Berwick Lodge (www.berwicklodge.co.uk) says: Keep all suppliers (including registrars) informed of your plans and always check in to see if they’re happy and able to host outdoors. Some areas of the day may need to be tweaked to accommodate various elements: sunshine causing candles to melt, wilting flowers and even bowing musical instruments! Let your guests know too, so that they’re dressed and prepared for all eventualities. You may consider supplying parasols, water bottles and even heel stoppers for the grass.
Utilise the outdoor elements as much as you can. Being outdoors means
you can use the natural flora all around. Perhaps a beautiful natural aisle, wildflowers for additional decoration, or orchards and woodland for shade.
Remember to manage your own expectations! This is England and the weather may not be on your side. Ensure you’ve mentally prepared yourself and that the change of plan doesn’t disappoint or spoil your day. Prepare for plan B, C and D! You’ll need to talk through a weather contingency with your venue and suppliers. If it’s too hot, cold, windy... these things will all affect the day differently. Producing alternative plans will ensure the day runs seamlessly and is just as beautiful and enjoyable wherever it takes place and whichever way things go.
OPEN-AIR “I DOS”
Jackie Aldrich and Deb Stogell of Just Ceremonies (https://justceremonies.co.uk) say: One of the best things about a celebrantled wedding is that you can hold your ceremony anywhere outside. You’ll have no legal restrictions on the content, or the time and length of your nuptials. Your guests can sit or indeed walk around the area as you spread the ceremony over several different spots. You can even have a toast to start your ceremony or to end it. And if you have four-legged friends, they can be included very easily in the great outdoors.
Most choose a place that feels special, but outside you’re offered a different set of walls, bringing you together with the world around you. This gives you the chance to declare your love to that special someone close to nature with the sounds of other life such as birds or water enveloping you as you enjoy the view. Weddings that take place al fresco don’t just offer the fresh air but, when led by a celebrant, can encompass the whole wedding party in celebration. The “I dos” aren’t just a set of words, they’re a story waiting to be told and an open-air setting can only enhance that story on your wonderful wedding day.
https://greenantlersphotography.com 53 EXPERT ADVICE www.richardlewisphotography.co.uk
SUMMER SCORCHERS
CEO and co-founder of The Gilchrist Collection, which owns Crowcombe Court (www.crowcombecourt.co.uk), Samantha Gilchrist says: With the summer wedding season in full swing and the English weather as unpredictable as ever, you may get more than you bargained for when it comes to wishing for a sunny day for your al fresco nuptials.
Don’t compromise your photographic backdrop for finding shade. Your wedding venue is the backdrop to your day and it’s important that it’s not lost in your photography when avoiding squinting eyes. Work with your venue and photographer in advance to discuss where you’ll take your couple shots and allow for early evening snaps in the iconic areas of your venue that might be too bright for the day. Ensure you have someone on hand to bring you water and canapés during your photo session and to top you up with suntan lotion, which can often get forgotten. Nobody wants a sunstroke headache on their wedding day!
As you’d make the decision to move your ceremony indoors if it rains, don’t feel pressured to stay outside if the sun becomes too hot. Consider
PIMMS O’CLOCK
Helen Sworder-Penman from The Sweet Tricycle (www.thesweettricycle.co.uk) says:
The Sweet Tricycle is the perfect addition to an outdoor wedding! Decorated with white roses and eucalyptus leaves, this characterful tricycle often stands out and offers the ideal treat for your guests. It can be used as a sweet stand, doughnut wall, crisps station or Pimms stand.
Sweets are an extremely popular choice as they go down very well both with adults and children. Pimms is also a lot of fun to serve al fresco on a warm summers day. But always check with your venue regarding their policy on serving alcohol.
We love being outdoors, especially during the summer. The tricycle has a lot of character, and really shines when among the great outdoors where we have enough space to show it off. If you’re looking for something special for your spring/summer wedding, The Sweet Tricycle is the perfect al fresco feature.
your dress or suit and consider whether you’ll be too hot to enjoy the moment. If you’re intent on staying outside, maybe ditch the suit jackets and instead opt for braces or waistcoats that buttonholes can be pinned to. Think too about your guests, will some be older and struggle with the temperatures? Work with your venue to understand if the area you’ve chosen is shaded or exposed to the sun. Otherwise, make the most of your venue’s inside space and move things to shelter so you can keep your cool at the altar.
If you’re worried about guests struggling with the heat while enjoying your venue’s grounds, incorporating some cooling wedding favours can help them deal with the soaring temperatures. My favourites include paper fans, sun cream, flavoured water dispensers, cooling mist stations, or even offer ice cream or ice lollies.
Don’t for get to take time out to refresh. Whether it’s packing a few extra shirts, arming your chief bridesmaid with powder for keeping the shine away or popping some refreshing towels and sprays into the venue’s toilets, all this can encourage that moment to refresh allowing your guests to feel their best.

The international best-selling Orient Bambino Watch Series now includes a long-awaited 38mm diameter case perfect for grooms-to-be.
The Classic and Simple Style Series, known as Orient Bambino by dedicated fans, features traditional design features such as a convex dial and domed glass. The series has been a consistent best-seller over the last decade in 70 countries around the world. Until now, they featured mostly 40.5-mm case diameters, however, these latest models feature a more compact 38-mm case.
The beautiful finish can be admired through the see-through back, and the domed glass and convex dial create a vintage feel. The dial is available in beige as well as black and white, which complements the simple design perfectly.

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.
Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

Dressed TO IMPRESS
The team at Colour Me Beautiful share their fashion advice for the groom-to-be
Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:
CHOOSING A STYLE
There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.
Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.
Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.
Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.
Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.
Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.
HIRING
Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance
and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.
Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.
ACCESSORIES
The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.
Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.
Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.
Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.
Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.
A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.
If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!
Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.
Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf.
Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.
Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.
GROOMING
Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

ALL UNDER CONTROL
I’ll be getting married in the height of summer and I fear that getting my make-up to stay in place all day could be an issue. What would you suggest?
Jane Dare from Eye Do Makeup (https://eyedomakeup.co.uk)
says: With this time of year getting hotter, brides frequently ask me how to ensure their make-up looks great all day in the heat. Follow my top tips and you can’t go wrong!
• If applying a fake tan, make sure it’s professionally done, and not streaky or patchy, as this can prove time consuming on the morning of your wedding if your make-up artist has to balance and match colour.
• After your morning skin routine apply sunscreen and a good oil control primer.
• Use a matte foundation instead of a luminous one, as they stay on longer and are a must for oily or sweat-prone skin. Avoid building the base layer too heavily or it’ll slide in the heat.
• Apply an eyelid primer to prevent smudging and creasing, and also apply underneath the eye with a little translucent powder to prevent lines from sweating. Refrain from using heavy eye colour – natural matte colours look great with just a pop of shimmer. Also, look for a waterproof liner, not a kohl to achieve longevity. Finally for the eyes, apply a waterproof mascara.
• Contour with matte bronzers, rather than shimmer. Use powder highlighter sparingly as they can be too reflective in brilliant light. Set with a light, translucent powder and setting spray, but don’t constantly reapply powder during the day if you’re starting to feel sweaty, as this results in caking. Simply remove excess oil from the surface of the skin with blotting papers if necessary, before resetting.
• Use powder blushers, rather than cream, as these will help to absorb any excess oil.
• Opt for matte lipsticks or lip stains, as glosses may feel slimy in the heat.

SUMMER SPECIAL
Our bridal beauty experts address your summer wedding worries
BARELY THERE
I’m loving the no make-up make-up look, and would like to go with something similar on my wedding day. What do you recommend?
Roxie Cotter from Roxie Makeup (www.roxiemakeup.co.uk) says: This look is all about achieving a natural-looking glow. A great base is the best route to fresh-faced skin and I’d recommended investing in some good quality skin care in preparation. Also, prepping the skin using a hydrating face mask before make-up application can help to ensure your complexion is glowing and moisturised.
When you’re going for a no make-up make-up look, avoid foundation. Instead, use a skin tint CC cream and concealer to give your skin some sheer coverage while allowing some of your natural skin and freckles to show through.
For colour, cream products are best for a fresh-faced finish. Give yourself a natural flush by adding a small amount of blush to the apples of your cheeks. If you want your no make-up look to give you a sunkissed complexion, apply a light layer of a warm-toned bronzer or blush across your nose too. To keep everything in place all day, and keep your glow looking fresh, finish with a setting spray.
Eyes should be kept simple, almost bare. I’d advise using a lash curler to give your natural lashes a boost, along with a coat of mascara. Use an eyebrow pencil to fill in your brows and finish with a brow gel.
FEELING FRAZZLED
The humidity this summer is causing my short style to go flat by lunchtime! How can I combat this on my wedding day?
Victoria Spicer from Tory B Hair (www.torybhair.co.uk) says: This is definitely one of my strong subjects having had short hair now for more than 20 years. So, I completely understand the joy of leaving the house looking shamazing only to find it’s dropped into the no-so-shamazing by the time I’ve made it to the car! Dry hair can frizz up and oily hair can hang down, so keep it prepped with some nourishing hair masks in the run up to your big day, but don’t use anything too heavy the day before. Have it clean ready for your hair stylist, but not overly conditioned, as too much could cause product build up and it’ll inevitably fall flatter sooner. If you’ve prepped it well, the styling products will work their magic.
Apply mousse on wet hair, then blow-dry to give maximum root lift and hold, but if your hair is fine opt for volumising powder instead. I always finish the style with hairspray and love those that come with a bit of added shine. You could also get a mini travel hairspray and keep that nearby on the day if you need a quick top up before the speeches.
For super short styles, I love to use a paste or putty on wet hair. Rough dry into position, then soften and tease with wax or even some coconut oil – just the smallest amount. The paste holds the style while the wax shines it in place. Curls sometimes love a quick spritz of water halfway through the day with a soft scrunch to take them into the evening. With any luck, you’ll be slow dancing by the end of the night and still looking fresh!

Being Sophie
Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin
Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.
What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?
The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.
What have you been up to since you left the show?
I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.
You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?
Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.
Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?
I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being
80
© James Rudland
a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!
How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?
I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.
Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?
I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.
For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?
As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the
whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.
Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!
Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?
I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.
What make-up products can’t you live without?
Cream contours and eyebrow gel!
What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?
At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

HONEYMOON NEWS 83
MY EVERYTHINGMy first, my last,
Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.
AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?
A ROOM WITH A VIEW
I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.
UNDERWATER LIFE
Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene

Rachel Westall experienced five-star, desert island luxury at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.
indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.
A FOODIES’ PARADISE
Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.
Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.
FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL
Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...
TRUE ROMANCE
It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I
ONCE IN A LIFETIME
Bond. The name’s Bond. No this isn’t a new film location of an upcoming James Bond movie, it’s The Muraka - a first-of-its-kind, luxury two-level residence with a master bedroom submerged some 16ft below sea level in the Indian Ocean. If money’s no problem, then honeymoon like Paris Hilton and go for it!
There’s so much more to say, but I’ll leave you to find out the rest for yourselves. Do indulge, it’s worth it. To book, visit the website: www.conradmaldives.com
HONEYMOON REVIEW 85
HAVEN A Celtic
Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland
WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!
Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.
A SPOT OF R&R
The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.
If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!
We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...
This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.
As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!
The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.
HEARTY FARE
The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.
This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.
Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.
I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.
When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.
I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.
For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.
If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 87
Do not disturb
Olivia Gibson ventures to Staffordshire for a spa minimoon at Moddershall Oaks
Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.
I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.
REST YOUR HEAD
With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.
All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.
When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.
THE ULTIMATE SPA SESSION
Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to
snuggle up.
The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.
I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.
Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.
