HEDINGHAM CASTLE SETS UP FOR SUMMER

Working with local suppliers Evelyn Rose Floristry and Andy Griffin Photography, Hedingham Castle is delighted to unveil its stunning outdoor ceremony space on the lawns of the Georgian House, overlooking the lake. New for 2023, couples can now say their vows in this incredible peaceful setting, with seating for up to 150 guests. Further to the UK’s new outdoor wedding laws brought in during the pandemic and made permanent in 2022, couples can now get married outside at licensed venues without the need for a permanent structure.

THE NIGHT BEFORE

New for 2023, you’re now able to book The Wedding Lodge for the night before your wedding. Arrive and relax with a meal (perhaps a takeaway, or something prepared for you by one of the venue’s caterers) and maybe a bottle or two of prosecco! You can then get ready in the house the following morning, with hair and make-up being able to arrive early to ensure enough time to get ready, before moving over to the wedding cottage in the main venue prior to the ceremony.

Hedingham Castle is set within 160 acres of stunning Essex countryside including the beautifully restored gardens in the immediate area below the Castle – the perfect backdrop for wedding photography. Our favourite spot is the lake, with the Castle behind, or in between the huge Wellingtonia trees at the bottom of the formal pond. ’TIL DEATH DO US PARTY

Itwas on holiday in Dubai, a trip to celebrate Lindsey’s birthday, that Chris proposed. Soon enough they started planning their big day.

Viewing Gosfield Hall, was love at first sight. Lindsey tells us, “As we drove down the drive, I was in tears. When we got there, they told us they’d had a cancellation for three months’ time. We decided to go for it and paid a deposit there and then. It just felt right. Unfortunately, we then went into lockdown before the wedding and had two cancelled dates. But it was obviously meant to be, as I managed to have my second son Sid in-between.”

On 14th October 2022, the pair said those special words, ‘I do’, amongst family friends. Here, Lindsey tells us all about their day...

I’ll never forget seeing Chris’s face at the end of the aisle and my two boys there looking so handsome. It was everything we dreamed of and more. I wish I could do it every weekend!

It was incredible my Mum made it to the ceremony. She is disabled and hadn’t been to an event in seven years.

I wore a couture dress called Riverside Iris by Hermione de Paula.

The dress was shot in a Vogue shoot, I then had it customised with their embroidery the designer is famous for. I had my son’s names added, a quote on the veil and initials on my arm.

My bridesmaids each wore a different style of taupe blush outfit from Maya.

We didn’t have a top table, just long tables of friends and family and round tables either side.

The cake was made by our lovely friend Susie and flowers added by us.

Our centrepieces were big floral arrangements in gold stands on the round tables, and garlands in the long tables.

The flowers were all created by myself and my amazing florist friend Rebekka Clarke who flew over from Helsinki for the wedding. I couldn’t have executed it without her.

Favours were wildflower seeds (a nod to my floristry business The Wildflower Garden).

Our band were incredible and had everyone on the dancefloor in a planned dance off. We then finished it off with the most amazing house music set by our dear friend Glen Manley.

We had tealights and candles dotted around. Along with a Till Death Do Us Party sign.

We hired the fantastic Trevor Cline, who is the most amazing magician.

We had lots of guests fly over and make such a huge effort to be there. It really was the best day of our lives. It was just a huge party!

I had a bespoke crown made from St Beth. I also had a feather coat which I wore for the sparkler shot.

Make sure you plan in your wedding schedule to take a minute to yourselves just after you get married. It goes so quickly!

After a three-year engagement, Alexandra and James Arthur said their I do’s at Braxted Park – and what a party it was!

The couple met on a night out in London in 2017 –Alex was celebrating her birthday and James was on his Christmas night out with his mates. It was James’ dance moves that first caught Alex’s eye!

James proposed in Dubai in February 2019. Alex explains, “It was really beautiful and James had arranged with the hotel for the room to be set up for the proposal with a rose petal bath and champagne on arrival. It was a total shock and I was blown away but in hindsight I wish I wasn’t wearing my travel outfit because I looked scruffy in all the photos we took to capture the moment!” Due to Covid, the wedding was postponed, but after a three-year engagement, the pair tied the knot at Braxted Park on 9th July 2022.

Here, Alex tells us all about the special day...

SETTING THE SCENE

Alex and James knew they wanted to get married in Essex and after some research, found Braxted Park. It was fair to say they searched no more as Alex tells us. “It’s a real mix of modern meets traditional. We also knew that we weren’t going to have a church wedding as neither of us are religious so seeing the Orangery and how beautiful it was sold the venue for us. The grand entrance when you drive down the long pathway to the main house at Braxted Park is really special. It makes a great impression straight away!”

The pair married in The Orangery. The Ceremony went really smoothly – and as a civil ceremony was quite short – which worked out well as James had to hold their 11-month-old daughter throughout the service as she would cry if anyone else tried to hold her. Alex remembers, “She’s a total Daddy’s girl! We love looking back at the ceremony on the wedding video as having her there with us throughout the ceremony was special, especially because if we’d got married on our original pre-covid date she wouldn’t have been there at all. It felt like a really special moment.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

Alex’s dress was by Essence of Australia. “I searched a few shops locally and ended up going back to my original location, the Bridal Shop in Romford.” Alex tells us, “The ladies that work there are so lovely and it was one of them who asked me to try on the style of dress that I ended up going for. I don’t think I’d have picked it myself but when I tried it on it fitted like a glove and it just felt like The One. I’m so glad I took the assistant’s advice and tried it on!”

James wore a three-piece navy suit from Jack Bunneys in Upminster. The groomsmen then all wore the same suit but had a different colour waistcoat and tie so that James stood out. The bridesmaid’s dresses were long, navy in a mix and match style. They all looked stunning.

Cheryl listened to all of our ideas, and added invaluable experience and expertise to create perfect flowers for our special day. She went above and beyond what we had hoped for. We couldn’t recommend Cheryl’s Flowers enough.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

The sun shone and the wedding party enjoyed a drinks reception outside. The couple chose a saxophonist called Sister Sax who played throughout the drink’s reception and then into the evening party! The couple add, “She gives off cool Ibiza vibes which was totally the vibe we were going for. We then had the most unbelievable band play throughout the wedding meal called The Royals who are an acoustic duo that we booked through Bands for Hire. Then in the evening we had DJ Liam Bone who is so talented and played exactly the right mix of current songs and club classics for all our guests to dance the night away to. Finally, we had a photobooth from Devoted Photobooths which was the perfect way to capture all of our guests having a good time and each photo was printed twice for the guests to use the extra one to stick in the guestbook and leave a message.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“The Events team at Braxted Park are second to none, they really are fantastic and so quick to get back to any queries,” Alex explains. “Nothing was ever too much trouble and they really make you feel as though you are the only couple to ever get married at the venue. We really didn’t have to think about or worry about anything on the day because the events team cover every little detail that you could think of – even down to bringing the bride and groom drinks during the evening reception so that we didn’t have to leave the dancefloor!”

A TIME Once upon

Danielle and Tony Straker styled their day in an oh-so stylish sage green palette

Danielle and Tony met 12 years ago at a mutual friend’s 21st birthday night out. As many a night goes, they ended up in The Pink Toothbrush nightclub, Rayleigh, and the rest was history! In 2019, on the same day the happy couple completed the purchase on their first flat together, Tony popped the question. Even though an Ibiza wedding was initially the plan, Covid cancelled that. However, this different path led them to the purchase of their first house together and falling pregnant with their daughter, Layla. On 23rd March 2023 at Apton Hall they became Mr & Mrs Straker. Here, Danielle tells us more about their day...

When we first viewed Apton Hall, we knew it was the one. The location, the rustic feel, the décor and the food were just right.

My make-up artist and hair stylist really helped on the morning. We laughed a lot which distracted me and put me at ease.

I found ‘the dress’ in Serena Bridal, in Wickford. The dress was made by Romantica of Devon, called Moire

It was the perfect venue for our intimate ceremony with family and close friends, followed by a party into the night with our evening guests!

We woke up and saw each other on the morning of the wedding day as we still had to do our normal morning routine for Layla before heading to the venue to get ready. We feel that helped take the edge off a bit as you didn’t have that extra pressure and buildup of not seeing each other before the wedding.

Tony and the groomsmen wanted the same style suit, so we approached Slater Menswear in Chelmsford. They recommended a deep blue three-piece tailored fit wedding suit from their Sawyers & Hendricks collection.

When guests were arriving and during the ceremony we had a violinist, Caroline Pattrick, play. As soon as I heard her play some Disney songs, I fell in love as I had always wondered how I could include a touch of Disney without making it too cheesy - this was the perfect way.

We opted for a seminaked, chocolate sponge with vanilla buttercream. The cake was decorated with a Mr & Mrs cake topper and foliage from our florist. Of the 96 doughnuts, we ended up with only one box left which we gifted to Apton Hall staff.

The flowers were picked and designed by Elisha’s Floral Design.

Elisha was really friendly and came to visit me on the day when I was getting ready to show me my bouquet and to wish me luck. She helped with adding the bouquet charm which had the photos of my grandparents on, so they’d be with me on my wedding day.

The colour theme for the wedding was sage green and Corlia Creation created the perfect shade as the background for the table plan, centrepieces, places names and table names.

Our wedding favours were kept simplepersonalised packets of heart shaped mints.

For the evening reception entertainment, we hired DJ Pete Ferrant who kept the dancefloor filled all night.

My husband and I are trying to be as eco-friendly as possible whilst planning our wedding. How can I ensure I’m doing the same with my dress?

There are many eco-friendly reasons why you should hire your dream wedding dress and not purchase it. The fashion industry already has an enormous impact on the environment, and this includes the manufacture of bridalwear. By renting a wedding dress you’re helping to lessen this impact by lowering the need for new raw materials and cutting down on material waste, reducing the energy and litres of water consumed in the production of new dresses and the carbon emissions from shipping.

As most purchased wedding dresses are only worn once, by renting your dress you’ll also be minimising waste ensuring less wedding dresses end up at the bottom of the wardrobe or in landfill. Wedding dress rental is not only good for the planet but also for your pocket!

SAVE YOUR SKIN!

I have particularly oily skin. How can I best prepare it so that my make-up stays on all day without looking shiny?

Having oily skin comes with its challenges, especially in the summer. However, here are a few of my tips to ensure the longevity of your make-up even in warm weather.

The best way to start your make-up is with a clarifying toner. The Mehron skin prep pro or La RochePosay clarifying lotion are some of my favourites. These help get rid of excess oil on the skin. I apply a little bit of this with a cotton pad all over the face.

The next step is to apply anti-sweat cream. The 3B Saver Gel or Carpe sweat absorbing face lotion are quite effective at controlling skin moisture levels. If you can’t find these, then make sure you use an oil-free moisturiser. You don’t want to add any unnecessary grease to skin that already has a tendency to get oily but you still want to moisturise because sometimes skin produces oil to overcompensate for the lack of moisture.

Next, I’d use a mattifying primer and add a layer of a loose translucent powder, especially to the T- zone and smile line. Don’t be afraid to add some of this to the brow area - this will help create a barrier between the skin and the make-up and should help stop excess oil coming through. My favourite product for this step is the Milk Makeup Pore Eclipse Mattifying Primer, the RCMA No-Colour Powder or Laura Mercier translucent powder. Now that you’re done prepping the skin you want to make sure your foundation is matte. Fenty Beauty

Pro Filt’r foundation or Estee Lauder foundation are some of the best

foundations on the market for this! Once applied they don’t budge!

Don’t forget to go back and apply your translucent powder all over the skin to set this in place. I apply this with a slightly damp sponge, but you can use a velvet powder puff. You may even want to apply a pressed powder for extra insurance.

The final step to this routine is to seal your makeup with a setting spray. The Charlotte Tilbury setting spray is a current favourite in my professional kit.

PURPLE REIGN

Purple is my favourite colour and I want to incorporate it into our flowers. Do you have any ideas of what blooms we should look for?

Purple is often a complementary colour when adding to a bridal selection. It works well with a lot of other colours. Or just blended with whites also looks good as well - it’s a very dominant colour, striking and bold, so sometimes you have to be careful that it doesn’t over dominate the design.

I would personally suggest adding hints of colour like the clematis flower. The clematis flower is not just a wall climber, in the garden, we can actually use cut flowers and they last really well and have a beautiful purple country garden hint to your bouquet.

However, if you wanted to use a softer purple more like a lilac you can have lilac roses Memory Lane’ or sweet-scented stocks that also come in a bold purple as well.

There are not many focal purple flowers but the ever-popular hydrangea in the calming colour of purple is truly beautiful, the variety ‘Moonstruck’ is a lighter shade or the rich tones in of ‘Deep Purple’ are sure to steal the show! Freesias are a sweet, scented option and Lisianthis is a bold but delicate wild looking flower with lots of heads for colour. The colour purple resembles luxury and devotion, so it’s the perfect add on your special day!

LIGHT ME UP

I want to decorate my dancefloor but my sister used light-up initials a few years ago and I want something different. Are there any new options?

Light up letters are still a very popular way to decorate the dancefloor with a lot of couples choosing to be different by going for an alternative font or style rather than the usual white lights. Very popular are initials in our art deco lights or vintage circus style letters. For the couples who want or to personalise their day further by having their surname with the matching Mr&Mrs (or Mr & Mr/ Mrs&Mrs) topper with the rustic letters very popular for weddings at barn venues. A great way to soften the dancefloor and to add the extra sparkle for your first dance photos, as well as continuing your colours and themes into the evening, is to repurpose some of your floral decorations. Blossom trees for example look great lit up by coloured uplighters and can be perfect for stunning evening photos or for framing your DJ, while flowers or floral decorations can be used for evening centrepieces and buffet and drinks tables.

What can I do to make my ceremony that little bit different?

There are many ways to make the ceremony a little bit different with a celebrant. Within a fairly traditional ceremony a ceremony enhancement is a great option. Of the many available I find the most popular are Tying the knot, Unity Candle, and Sand ceremony. These enchanting ceremonies acknowledge the traits that each individual brings to the relationship whilst honouring and celebrating their union. Family members, parents, children or friends can be practically involved in these ceremonies, and the colours of sand or ribbons can also represent various characteristics.

A similar idea of the blending of two families into one new union can be achieved by other creative ways. A cocktail ceremony for example, where you create your signature cocktail or if you’re Harry Potter fans by creating a special potion. These beautiful and colourful ceremony additions all have a real wow factor for your guests and are incredibly photogenic. There are some other original and different ways to involve friends and family within your ceremony. All of your guests can be asked to make a vow of support to you both. A family member can do a reading or if they’re a bit shy they can choose or write something which the celebrant can read on their behalf. Pre ceremony a celebrant can interview younger children to get their perspectives and stories about what they love about you as a couple and this can form a funny and emotional reading for your ceremony. A celebrant can also have ideas to surprise your guests during the ceremony, for example by including some lighthearted moments in your vows, with your agreement of course!

And finally, you can make your ceremony a bit different with your choice of location. So if you want your ceremony to be at a zoo, on a beach, at a famous museum, theme park or art gallery just let your celebrant know. We love the more adventurous locations and ceremonies just as much as the traditional ones!

Louise Prance visited Warwickshire’s Ardencote Spa, where she experienced total body bliss and a weekend of wellness…

Located in Warwickshire, Ardencote Spa is easily accessible for a spa day or weekend away, however, upon arriving down the leafy drive, you feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Set in 83 acres of landscaped gardens, Ardencote is a modern hotel and destination spa offering everything needed for a weekend of wellness after the big day. A pool, treatment rooms,18-hole golf course, leisure facilities, tennis courts and a restaurant and bar await for a blissful UK-based honeymoon.

Upon arrival my partner and I were shown to our sizeable, wellequipped room, one of 110 at the hotel, that overlooked the stunning outdoor pool and jacuzzi. After settling in, this was exactly where we headed first. Whilst the weather was on the cold side for the pool, the temperature of the jacuzzi was just right for a lengthy soak, glass of fizz in hand.

Not much could have dragged us away from this lap of luxury, but a full body massage was calling and much needed. Of all the massages I’ve had, this one was up there and highly recommended. If the jacuzzi float had left any aches and pains, the massage certainly rid me of any further niggles!

Furthering our relaxation, we induldged in the many spa rooms, including the Himalayan salt sauna, and after final dip in the atmospheric indoor pool the sun loungers were just perfect for whiling away the hours with a good book or post-wedding reminiscing.

Feeling a world away from the stresses of everyday life, we enjoyed a luxurious afternoon nap on the sumptuous bed, before getting ready for a delicious dinner at the 1 Rosette Brasserie, which complements the existing and ever-popular Conservatory Bar. I was treated to a delicious vegan burger, while my companion enjoyed a mouth-watering tagine, of course polished off with sizeable desserts.

Heading to the bar for a night cap, the aura of calm permeates every aspect of Ardencote and it wasn’t long before we took ourselves to bed,

feeling fully rested, content and peaceful.

After a leisurely lie-in the next morning, we headed down for breakfast before another dip in the pool and a stroll around the extensive grounds.

If you’re so inclined, you can take part in racket sports tennis, squash and racquetball or table tennis, or take in a round of golf ‒ the winddown options are endless.

AN ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY

Ardencote dates back to 1863, when it was built as the dowry house for Mary the daughter of Thomas Phillips, a wool manufacturer from Manchester. Having passed through many hands, and having undergone many extensions and updates since then, the beautiful estate was purchased by local entrepreneur Mr Huckerby in 1996. The Huckerby family still retains ownership, making Ardencote a truly family-run, independent hotel.

Nestled on the north coast of the island in Anse la Raie (a popular kite surfing spot) sits the five-star, eco-committed boutique hotel Paradise Cove. With Mauritius fast becoming a sustainable island, Paradise Cove’s effort to go green includes being part of the Positive Impact Movement (created by the Attitude hotel group) ensuring local sourcing and no single-use plastic.

ROOM WITH A VIEW

I was excited to visit this adults-only tropical paradise, an acclaimed Small Luxury Hotels of the World, having benefitted from a renovation in 2019. It offers a warm welcome with 75 rooms and suites including the Deluxe Premium Rooms, one of which was to become my home for three blissful nights. This honeymoon hideout has been authentically designed in the island’s signature style with wood, rattan and tropical palm-print wallpaper and furnishings.

The rooms have been positioned to admire the panoramic cove views, along with the cluster of other areas that make up this glamorous getaway. Centred around the main reception built under a charming thatch roof is the stylish STAY bar; the complimentary tea bar boasting locally grown flavours; the main swimming pool where I enjoyed an early morning dip each day and The Dining Room restaurant where the delicious buffet breakfast was brimming with exotic flavours.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

There’s so much choice between the four restaurants at this dreamy destination with a Dine-Around experience available in three of them for half-board and all-inclusive guests. For delicious sushi, the à la carte Japanese XO restaurant won’t disappoint while if it’s seafood you’re after, try the Cove Restaurant’s private kiosks on the sand for catch of the day.

I was in for a treat at the trendy Peninsular Restaurant and bar perched

overlooking the jetty and lagoon with far-flung views stretching across to the five north islands in one direction, and the new infinity pool (that’s heated during the winter months) in the other. A highlight was an invite to the launch of the new five-course vegan fine dining experience by Michelin-starred Chef Alexis Gauthier. I tucked into a fondant heart of palm made with pressed watermelon followed by a semi-confit cut of giraumon with a medley of grains and wild rice. The lychee wine is a must-try while you’re on the island, it became my favourite tipple of the trip!

RIDING THE OCEAN WAVES

I was lucky enough to hop on board the hotel’s 12-seat catamaran for a full-day cruise around Îlot Gabriel and Île Plate (also known as the Flat Island). After settling in for a suntan, and a delicious barbecue lunch, the boat reached Coin de Mire where it was time to grab my swimmers and jump into the warm Indian Ocean to snorkel (dive enthusiasts can scuba dive here).

Looking to make a memory on a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon? Then book a sunset cruise or the Stargazing experience with an astrologer out on the jetty which is just one of the many You&Me Moments the resort offers.

Back on land, activities include yoga, Tai Chi, a gym plus two floodlit tennis courts. One of my favourite pastimes was relaxing in the cute love nests dotted around the grounds, promising privacy for honeymooners.

ISLAND ESCAPE

The wellness journey starts the moment you enter the lush open-air spa where

the tempting treatments are known as Beauty Rituals of the World of the organic French brand Cinq Mondes. I indulged in a 50-minute full body massage with therapist Samantha who used a scented pure coconut oil made on the island. Dreaming of a couple’s massage in one of the love nests at the water’s edge? Consider it done!

WITH LOVE FROM MAURITIUS

Step back in time at the historic Château De Labourdonnais, a twostorey, colonial-style Creole mansion and heritage site which was once a sugar plantation. This local landmark boasts French-style furnishings plus an orchard in the grounds that contributes to the fruit production on the island. A WARM WELCOME

I was invited to stay at the newly opened adults-only Sunrise Attitude, a four-star hotel committed to tourism with a positive impact with 153 rooms commanding prime position on the east coast. It’s opposite the powder-white sandy beach at Belle Mare boasting picture-perfect views of the clear lagoon which I couldn’t wait to swim in. Beach volley is a pastime here, along with sundowners on the shore - the local Phoenix Beer is a must-try!

Stand-out features include eight villas with plunge pools where you can wake up to room service. The 28 swimup rooms are another fab offering for honeymooners, linking each terrace to the main Papaya Pool and swim-up bar, plus there’s also Bar 31 boasting a stunning view of the beach and pool.

As with all eight Attitude properties, Sunrise Attitude has been designed in keeping with the local surroundings, marrying earthy tones with on-trend, hand-crafted furnishings created by local artisans using locally sourced materials including raffia. In their bid to eliminate single-use plastic, this eco resort provides you with a reusable water bottle and tea and coffee are collected from reusable glass jars at the Bulk Shop - don’t miss sampling the local passionfruit, mango and vanilla tea!

DINE IN STYLE

I had high expectations for an authentic tapas-style dinner at the brand’s signature Kot Nou restaurant (present at all Attitude hotels) and I wasn’t disappointed – you can take a cookery class here to learn the local recipes.

Similar to Paradise Cove, the DineAround option allows you to pick between three restaurants on a halfboard basis where you’ll be spoilt for choice! The Market restaurant specialises in local and international delicacies using the freshest seasonal and sustainable ingredients – I tucked into vegan pancakes for breakfast.

The Social House restaurant and bar is an informal setting playing live music during the evening where I shared tasty vegan platters, and my favourite spot for lunch had to be Taba-j, the brightly painted kiosk serving traditional takeout street food. I couldn’t get enough of the local roti washed down with alouda (a Mauritian milkshake). Experience one of your first meals as newlyweds with an invite to a local team member’s home for an Otentik dinner. My host was Concita Fortuno, who welcomed me for a wonderful evening of food, music and dance – she even taught me how to cook gateaux piment (chilli bites!)

EARLY TO RISE

I couldn’t wait to experience the Secret Sunrise guided meditation to music on the beach – even if it did mean getting up earlier than normal! Chilling out wearing headphones, it was an experience I’ll never forget. It’s free and takes place twice a week and a private 20-minute session can be arranged, with large groups invited to experience the interactive dance session.

LET THE MAGIC HAPPEN

I indulged in treatments at the new Spa POZ (meaning to relax and take a break). Dotted within this tranquil leafy space are single and double open-air creole treatment huts, a salt hammam (that helps to soothe skin problems) and a beauty salon. The vegan spa products packaged in reusable tins are handmade on the island using local plants with 5% of each purchase at Spa POZ (and from the Otentik Bazaars selling souvenirs) donated to

the Green Attitude Foundation helping fund sustainable development projects.

WISH YOU WERE HERE

I couldn’t wait to take the raft over to Gran Zil for a beach barbecue lunch and chill out in an over-water hammock - I didn’t want to leave. Olivia Gibson discovers the delights of Provence at Hôtel Crillon le Brave

Known for its diverse landscapes, picturesque views, iconic lavender fields, vineyards and Mediterranean coastline, Provence is the ultimate honeymoon destination that oozes romance at every turn. When the opportunity arose to visit Maisons Pariente’s Hotel Crillon le Brave, I packed my bags and headed to the airport alongside my partner for a magical stay at the sought-after property.

After a short flight and transfers to the five-star destination, we were welcomed by the oh-so-accommodating staff, who gave us a personal tour of the hotel. The charming spaces captured our hearts from the moment we arrived – it was like something out of a movie! The architecture made from blond Crillon stone is perched at the top of the village, boasting captivating views of Mont-Ventoux and the surrounding rolling countryside. Every corner of the private setting offered a stunning backdrop to escape the outside world and disconnect for a while.

BREAKFAST IS SERVED

While strolling through the labyrinth of 17th- and 18th-century buildings, hand-in-hand, we had to take a step back to bask in the gentle breeze, chirping birds and the occasional church bells. Together it created the ideal atmosphere to relax while enjoying a delicious Provençal buffet for breakfast on the panoramic terrace. What better way to start the morning than by eating delicious food while enjoying such breathtaking and wide-ranging views? We tucked into homemade pastries, fresh fruit and granola on our first morning before enjoying a cooked breakfast with freshly baked breads on our second day ‒ the Nyons olive bread is a must try!

PAMPERING PLANS

The Spa des Écuries is the perfect location to relax with various beauty,

body and facial treatments. Located in an ancient 18th-century stonevaulted stable with three treatment rooms, one of which is a double room, the team has paid close attention to the spa with cosy features and charming touches to create a calming atmosphere. After being greeted by the beauty therapist, I was whisked away to a room for an expertly executed massage. During my hour-long treatment, the masseuse went to town tackling my problem areas using traditional massage techniques to help me relax, reduce muscle tension throughout my body, and promote blood circulation. I felt all my worries melt away, as well as my knots. An aroma of essential oils filled the dark-lit room and I almost drifted off! The intimate setting combines gentle and effective approaches to enhancing overall wellbeing – I felt fully disconnected from the outside world, bliss!

REST AND RELAX

With 17 bedrooms and 17 suites, the hotel offers a stunning range of spaces for all celebrations. Our beautiful suite was complete with a spacious bedroom, lounge area and bathroom with all the amenities needed. The interior was something out of a storybook with a charming style, plush furnishing, neutral materials, an ornate fireplace and a green colour scheme. The red floor tiles are typical of Provence and can be seen throughout the space, through to the bathroom, which has a freestanding bathtub, double sinks and a spacious shower. The luxurious touches continued to the living room with a flat-screen TV, minibar, tasteful artwork, comfortable sofas and armchairs. With the summer approaching, we were thankful for the adjustable air conditioning too!

Sleeping in the large, king-sized bed was like laying on a fluffy cloud. The large windows overlooking the valley allowed plenty of natural light for a gentle and calming morning wake-up call, leaving us feeling wellrested and rejuvenated.

MAKING A SPLASH

I was desperate to catch some rays after the winter months, and the pool area at Hôtel Crillon le Brave was just what we needed! The heated, turquoise water overlooked the surrounding countryside and provided just enough space to get some morning lengths in. We spent most of our time in the tranquil setting, whether having a dip or enjoying the peaceful atmosphere with a good book. With multiple sun loungers scattered around, guests can easily find the perfect location to sit, whether it’s in the sun or under an umbrella.

For the fitness-fanatics, the on-site fitness room boasts all the equipment needed to break a sweat; I recommend enjoying some morning yoga to start the day off before breakfast.

Alternatively, I would recommend taking part in some friendly competition with a game of Pétanque, a French sport with the objective of getting boules closest to a target. I’m happy to announce that I won most of our games!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As a massive foodie, I was excited to try the local cuisine. Hôtel Crillon le Brave has two on-site restaurants offering local produce. Head chef Adrien Brunet has presented new menus with locally sourced delicacies, inviting guests on a gourmet journey through Provence. La Madeleine is a Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant that offers a spectacular experience on a panoramic terrace with must-see views. Expertly balancing textures and flavours, the team has created a gourmet menu with extraordinary dishes exquisitely presented.

The bistronomic restaurant, La Table du Ventoux, has a relaxed atmosphere, and Adrien has created a classic menu inspired by the best of southern France. We were privileged to dine at the restaurant twice. On the first night, I enjoyed the tempura scampi for starter, with shiso and juice extract, before tucking it into the Ardèche trout with watercress ravioli and lemongrass broth. I finished off the meal with a soft and fluffy Fraisier cake, which melted in my mouth! On our second evening, I opted for the fish bouillabaisse with a delicious sauce and spring vegetables, followed by the lamb Wellington with chlorophyll, nut-brow buttered polenta, and bay leaf. What better way to finish the meal than with a lemon cheesecake finger adorned with gold flakes? Thanks to the attentive staff

and passionate chefs, the service was impeccable on both evenings. My favourite beverage of the trip was the La Douceur de Crillon, a must-try cocktail featuring white peach, apricot from Roussillon, homemade lavender syrup and prosecco – yum! After our meals, we spent time in the bar area, the oldest house in the hotel. Located on the ground floor of the Maison Roche, this gorgeous space provides a cosy setting to relax with a drink in hand, especially with the extensive wine menu! An equally wonderful setting to relax during the day with a game of chess, whilst taking a break from the sun.

THE FINAL VERDICT

After such a memorable experience, I cannot recommend Hôtel Crillon le Brave enough! It’s the ultimate setting for romantic honeymoons, with a rural location, spectacular views, delicious dishes, charming buildings and a tranquil setting. The magical trip will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we have many memories to treasure for years – we will definitely be returning!
