ello, lovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your East Midlands Wedding! With spring approaching, we’re excited to embrace this beautiful season and see what couples have up their sleeves. The weather can be unpredictable this time of year, so it’s always essential to devise a wet-weather plan to relax, knowing you’ve covered all your bases in the run-up to your wedding – especially for those opting for al fresco celebrations. The seasonal availability for flowers offers an excellent choice for the time of year; think daffodils, tulips, hyacinth, crocus, Lily of the Valley, Iris and more blooms. It’s an excellent opportunity to embrace a colourful and bold colour scheme using nature’s palette. Who doesn’t like abundant flowers from bouquets, gorgeous arrangements and installations? Remember to move your florals throughout the day to ensure a picture-perfect backdrop for the vows, wedding breakfast and reception while staying on budget. Floral arches are my personal favourite! Expect Pantone’s colour of the year, Peach Fuzz, to grace the wedding industry. The compassionate and nurturing soft peach shade conveying a heartfelt kindness will surely become a huge movement that we’re so excited to see. Read more about this shade on page 8! Another popular trend making a statement is champagne towers that add a touch of fun and class to weddings while serving guests a glass of bubbly. If you’re at the start of your planning journey, you’ve come to the right place because we cover everything from fashion, beauty, cakes, venues and more. When searching for a property, I advise seeing if any of your shortlisted venues are hosting wedding shows, as spring is a popular time for these events. It allows you to look around the spaces, meet local suppliers, discuss your big day and ask plenty of questions. For those creeping closer to your special day, we have plenty of last-minute tips and tricks to ensure a stress-free wedding and the perfect finishing touches for that extra wow factor – there’s something for everyone. That’s all from me, happy planning!

WINNING IN LOVE

FEELING PEACHY Pantone, the global colour authority and provider of professional colour language standards and digital solutions for the design community, has introduced the colour of the year that’s sure to impact 2024 weddings PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz! The velvety and gentle peach embraces the spirit by enriching the mind, body and soul. In times of turmoil in many aspects of life, the need for nurturing, empathy and compassion grows stronger, as do imaginings of a more peaceful future. The warm and cosy shade highlights the desire for togetherness with others and the feeling of the sanctuary this creates. It adds a sense of tenderness, communicating a message of caring, sharing, community and collaboration. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director at Pantone Color Institute, says. “A cosy peach hue softly nestled between pink and orange, PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz brings belonging, inspires recalibration and an opportunity for nurturing, conjuring up an air of calm, offering us a space to be, feel, heal and flourish from whether spending time with others or taking the time me to enjoy a moment by ourselves. Sensitive but sweet and airy, the year’s colour evokes a new modernity. It’s a quietly sophisticated and contemporary peach with depth whose gentle lightness is understated but impactful, bringing beauty to the digital world. Poetic and romantic, with a clean peach tone with a vintage vibe, PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz reflects the past yet has been rephrased to have a contemporary ambience. 8

For fashion-forward bridal luxury in the heart of the Peak District, look no further than Charlotte Elizabeth Bridal! The multi-award-winning boutique in Derbyshire provides beautiful gowns from some of the world’s leading designers. The team is over-the-moon to have been announced as the East Midlands Regional Winner for the Bridal Retailer, est. less than four years at the Wedding Industry Awards 2024. Owner Charlotte Burton says, “I was ecstatic and very proud when they announced it. It’s taken lots of hard work and it feels like my biggest achievement to date, especially as we’re an independent business unlike others in the industry that have big teams to do all the different roles. I think it’s down to my personal approach to my customers. They deal directly with me through the whole journey, so I often get to know them over a year, from when they first shop for a dress to all the fittings and then on the morning of the wedding. Some stores won’t offer that same level of personal service.” From timeless classics and ultra-feminine and supermodern designs to dazzling headpieces and elegant veils, the boutique offers the ultimate setting, offering styleconscious brides everything needed to turn heads. The team is dedicated to helping couples every step of the way to ensure they can relax and enjoy every moment of the experience. But, most importantly, they’ll ensure brides have fun along the way! REAL WEDDINGS

T

hese lovebirds met while working on Blue Peter during a team lunch, and their smiles attracted them to each other. After chatting back and forth via emails, followed by a friend’s leaving do, the pair decided to go on a date. They played 20 questions over dinner, then spent a further four hours talking in the car till 2 am before Bec flew off to Australia for a couple of months. They didn’t want to make anything official too quickly, but Tim picked her up from Heathrow when she returned, and the rest is history. The couple became engaged on a motorhome trip on a Northumberland beach in May 2022. A few years earlier, they were visiting the area and stumbled onto the most picturesque beach, where Bec said to Tim, “I don’t need a fancy proposal; this would be perfect.” He didn’t propose on the exact beach because he was determined it would be a surprise and Bec was already at a stage where she assumed a ring was coming. She says, “We spent the rest of the trip having barbecues on beaches, bubbly in cute seaside pubs, eating lobster and crab sandwiches, coffee on the side of the road and ringing every single person we knew cause the joy was addictive!”

SETTING THE SCENE The couple wanted to include fun elements to reflect them and their favourite things on the big day. They wanted people to leave feeling like they knew more about them and their story. Kilworth House Hotel had the most incredible orangery, perfect for Bec and Tim’s wedding with plenty of natural lighting, original black and white mosaic floor and a metal structure. The couple didn’t even consider anywhere else, and made the venue work with the budget. The Hotel was incredible throughout the whole experience from start to finish, making the pair feel extra special. Their kindness and dedication made it clear that the couple were always the priority. The reception space was beautifully decorated with round tables featuring seasonal blooms in bud vases with a few candles for the centrepieces to complement the beautiful room. Each table was named after significant locations important to the pair, and the couple wrote a little about each area so guests could walk around the tables to discover the couple’s love story. Favours created by the bride and her mother-in-law were a big hit! The biscuits were shaped like Blue Peter badges, all wrapped in a blue ribbon with a “Here’s one I made earlier” tag. The pair decided to scrap the canapés and booked a popcorn cart instead, their absolute addiction! They also chose a Chinese buffet for evening food as it’s their favourite takeaway. During the planning process, the coupld knew they wanted a Lambethstyle cake! Tim had to seriously appeal for more subdued colours because Bec was ready for bright pink icing. He made a great choice; the light pink was beautifully classy and allowed the cherries to pop. Family is essential to the pair but sadly, none of the grandparents could attend the wedding. So, the couple made a sign called “Generations of love”, which included a little backstory from how their grandparents and parents met, with the date they got married and photos. Bec says, “We felt this was the perfect homage to those who were no longer with us or couldn’t attend. My mum also made us a big banner that said ‘Simple Exceptional’, a slogan on the top I wore on my and Tim’s first date, that I bought specifically. It’s become a common reference in our relationship. The banner is now hanging in our hall as a keepsake.”

LOOKING THE PART As a slow fashion advocate, the bride chose a pre-loved dress as the thought of spending a lot of money on something she’d wear once was the furthest thing from her comfort zone. As one of the last of her friends to 27

get married, Bec never saw anything that resonated with her personal style. She says, “I went to Butterflies Dress Agency, which specialises in the most exquisite second-hand designer clothing. I tried on roughly six dresses and appreciated their beauty – I’d have been happy in any of them! The gown I chose didn’t remind me of any of my friend’s wedding dresses. I altered the sleeves so they hung loosely off-the-shoulder to add my own personal style and changed the buttons to something more sparkly. I borrowed my friend’s garter and my other friend’s veil – both were my bridesmaids on the day.” The bride splurged on vintage gold heart drop earrings and wore a simple gold bangle from her mother-in-law. Her shoes were from Vinted, and her handbag was from a small business called Rommy UK that Bec has supported for years. She adds, “I felt absolutely stunning! Everything all came together perfectly, and I wouldn’t change a thing. I felt so excited that I was finally getting married that I stood outside my parents’ house and screamed, ‘I’m getting married’ before we left for the church!” Tim wore a suit from Moss, it was a navy lightly checked style with a pink tie. He’s not a big suit guy, but he was most excited for his shoes! He purchased a pair of Loakes leather and suede brogues. Bec says, “When we looked through our wedding photos, he mentioned how much he loved them on multiple occasions. He was also the only one of the wedding party to wear a waistcoat to stand out.” The bridesmaids all picked their own dresses in hot pink not knowing how much of a trend the colour would become. Bec comments, “I wanted the dresses to resemble my best girls and their own styles, I wanted them to feel confident as I know that’s sometimes difficult when you haven’t chosen your own outfit.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Bec and Tim’s wedding was full of memorable moments from start to finish! The best man and bridesmaid sang in the church together during the signing the register, a special moment the lovebirds will always treasure. A violinist played during the drinks reception and wedding breakfast to enhance the romantic atmosphere too. Other entertainment included a photo booth that was a great hit with kids who enjoyed the limitless photos and props, as well as a band for the evening reception. Bec says, “The band was fantastic and got everyone up dancing! Tim surprised everyone by playing the drums during a few songs, which was very special as I’d never heard him play before. My jaw hit the floor as he was great!” “For both of us, the love we felt from everyone was incredible. Looking around the room and seeing so many different faces was very special! We had a lot of speeches and I was worried we might have had too many, but it was perfect in the end as everyone shared something very different. Tim and I both gave a short speech while my mum incorporated lyrics from different ABBA songs as they’re our favourite band. Tim’s mum wrote a poem and held up different items from the groom’s childhood while my dad made a video of mine and the best men shared something special too.”

HONEYMOON The couple sailed from Dubrovnik to Split in Croatia, which they booked through Yacht Getaways. They spent seven glorious days on the Adriatic Sea, stopping in little ports or buoys, being cooked delicious meals, watching the stars, popping bottles and exploring stunning towns and national parks. The bride says, “We normally book an adventurous holiday that involves lots of walking. It was glorious not having to think about anything for a whole week while also not being stationary. We had the best group of like-minded people on our boat. Waking up at sea to the sunrise, the sound of water and a fresh coffee was simply exceptional.” 28

hese lovebirds met on their first day of university! Hannah says, “We wouldn’t say it was love at first sight, but it was friends at first sight! We were extremely close throughout this time, and our relationship blossomed!” Jay proposed on Barricane Beach in September 2021 – a complete surprise for Hannah. It was his third attempt in the four days they were away. The first one got messed up by a storm that stranded the pair at sea, and the second was interrupted by a minor surfing accident, but the third time was the charm! He popped the question at a cosy and hidden spot on the beach, which was the perfect setting. Here the bride shares details about their special day...

Spring

FEVER

Alice and Ryan exchanged vows at Doddington Hall surrounded by loved ones Images courtesy of AWPhotographic

T

hese lovebirds would always see each other around but started talking during sixth form, where Alice was instantly attracted to Ryan’s humour. She officially became his girlfriend in 2012 after he came back from his first year at university – the rest is history! Alice has been going on family holidays to Cornwall since childhood! So naturally, Ryan joined these special trips over the years. On 17th April 2021, Ryan proposed on Porthminster Beach in St Ives, which was a complete surprise! Alice comments, “We’d already been together for nine years, so all of our friends and family asked when he would pop the question, but I was never expecting it. He asked the question the evening before my parents arrived so that we could enjoy the rest of the trip celebrating with my family.” Here, the bride shares details about their special day… 36

REAL WEDDINGS

I was expecting to be quite stressed the morning of the wedding when I was getting ready, but everyone was so calm and I thoroughly enjoyed the lead up to the ceremony. The hair and make-up teams made us all feel so relaxed, and we enjoyed some bucks fizz plus pastries while listening to music.

We had rain and clouds in the lead up to the wedding – it was quite cold! When I woke up at 6 am, there was so much mist I was starting to feel disheartened as we knew we wanted to get married outside in the Walled Garden. By 9 am, it was blue skies and sunshine for the whole day and it just made it so much more perfect.

Ryan was much more nervous than me, particularly about his wedding speech. He had to be at the venue about an hour before the ceremony to greet all the guests and said it felt like a lifetime before I eventually came down the aisle.

I felt like a princess after getting ready! I remember feeling really confident and comfortable in my dress, which is exactly what I wanted. I just couldn’t wait to see Ryan’s reaction when I walked down the aisle.

My nanna and grandad used to volunteer at Doddington Hall & Gardens, and I sometimes joined them during school holidays when I was younger. The owners used to send my grandparents Christmas cards and invite them along to events, which I occasionally attended. We didn’t even have to look at any other wedding venue as I had always told my family I wanted to get married there.

We wanted the flowers to be the main event at the wedding, so we had four tables with high floral centrepieces and four tables with smaller arrangements to give that wow factor. 37

The tables had gold charger plates along with sage green napkins, table runners and candles dotted around the flower arrangements.

We wanted to include the flowers on our bake by Cake & Thistle. We chose a buttercream design with gold flecks running down the front and the flowers tumbling down almost like a waterfall effect.

My dress was from Belle & Bouquet by the designer Maggie Sottero. As soon as I tried the gown on, I knew it was the one! It had a beautifully beaded bodice and a satin organza skirt with buttons leading all the way down the train. The ceremony flowers were used on the top table, and there was a beautiful long and low arrangement with champagne-coloured roses, white peonies, rosemary, gypsophila, eucalyptus and trailing greenery – our florist did a fantastic job!

Ryan hired a dark grey tweed suit from Andrew J Musson Ltd with a matching waistcoat, a tie and pocket square that matched the bridesmaids’ dresses. 38

The bridesmaids’ wore made-to-order multiway dresses from Lá Closet Dé Chánel in a dark sage green. I always wanted my best girls to wear the same colour but feel comfortable wearing a style however they wanted. Each bridesmaid had gypsophlia in their hair.

REAL WEDDINGS

Our venue offered a DJ who played our favourite music! We asked each guest to provide a song on their invite for the playlist so we could ensure as many people were on the dancefloor as possible.

There was a vintage ice cream trike that we hired from Flossy’s Ice Creams, which was in the Walled Garden once the evening guests arrived. It was a great addition to the beautiful spring day!

We absolutely loved the speeches! All the guests said how great they were, and we’re so pleased we got them recorded to rewatch.

Our photographer and videographer really went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable while capturing the best moments of the day. We wanted to practice our first dance one last time in my dress before we did it, so they pulled us away so we could get a moment to ourselves and captured some beautiful photos outside the front of the hall with the sunset in the background.

REGIONAL SHOOT

Timeless LOVE

Local suppliers came together to create this elegant and classic shoot Images courtesy of Cherished Photography by Claudia

T

he team of talented suppliers involved in this showstopping shoot wanted to showcase the elegance and charm of the relatively unknown venue, The Buttercross. The property provided the perfect backdrop to create a timeless and elegant shoot thanks to the high ceilings, large bay windows and sweeping staircase. Not forgetting the ornate decorations, along with the local sights in the town to encompass some of the photos. Shoot coordinator Genevieve Smith at Gen’s Cake Shed says, “Being part of this shoot was fantastic; the venue was stunning, the atmosphere was so relaxed and everyone did their best to produce some amazing opportunities to showcase each other’s talents. Having worked with some collaborators before, I expected it to be an amazing experience, but the day surpassed all my expectations. Thanks to the team for making it all come together – each of you is so talented.” 41

MESMERISING MOMENTS Stapleford Park Hotel provided a showstopping setting for this winter-inspired shoot Images courtesy of Elen studio Photography and Film

A

s there are more winter weddings these days, Elena Bocharnikova at Elen Studio Photography and Film decided to organise a seasonalthemed shoot with a difference to highlight the time of year beautifully. What location is better than Stapleford Park, an ideal wedding venue year-round? The combination of the gold and white colour scheme created a luxurious, high-end look in The Orangery and the Grand Hall. Bourne Bridal offered several dresses; one gown featured a gorgeous cape to help the beautiful model keep warm outdoors, which could quickly be removed when indoors. Complementing the bride, the groom looked dapper in a black suit with a gold tuxedo. The white and gold wedding cake was a true masterpiece with intricate gold accents and ethereal white flowers, a testament to love’s enchanting allure. The floral arrangements looked stunning with roses, the embodiment of romance, intertwining with golden foliage to create a mesmerising contrast. The table settings were a symphony of white and gold stationery, gold-rimmed plates and gold cutlery to create an opulent atmosphere. 45

More and more couples are choosing to have a personalised wedding ceremony, where you can quite literally ‘throw out the rule book’ and have a ceremony that is unique and bespoke, and reflects a couple’s personality. As a celebrant, I will create a script that will be filled with lots of love, fun and laughter, telling your love story to all your family and friends.

This is the most important part of the day when everyone that you love has been invited to witness this special moment, so why not include them by having a symbolic ritual, ie sand ceremony or candle ceremony, or even jump the broom! – these are just a few ideas, there are so many more to choose from. If the venue allows, you can also include your four-legged friend, where I will create a personalised certificate with room for them to sign with their paw, using a pet friendly ink pad of course!

The ultimate A-Z guide to wedding-dress shopping

C

D

IS FOR ALTERATIONS Once you’ve ordered your dream dress, start looking for a seamstress. Even though you’ve ordered your size, chances are it’ll still be a little tweak here and there as gowns fit everyone differently. Often, the bridal boutique can make a recommendation or may even have one in-house. If not, look for those with plenty of good reviews on social media.

IS FOR CATWALK Our top tip for newly-engaged couples is always to hit the wedding shows as soon as possible. It’s the best way to meet suppliers and assemble your W-day team. While you’re there, be sure to experience a catwalk show. It’ll help you find the inspiration you’ve been looking for, from silhouettes to fabrics and designers, as well as guide you towards a boutique you might want to make an appointment with. IS FOR DOS It’s essential to wear nude underwear when trying gowns and avoid bright or bold patterns at all costs! If you plan to wear shapewear on the day, bring this along to get the full effect. Also, wear heels similar to those you'll be wearing to see if alterations are needed.

IS FOR BODY BEAUTIFUL Everyone, without exception, deserves to feel beautiful on their wedding day. We all have concerns about our bodies, but remember, there will be something stunning out there just for you. Dress for you and your gorgeous shape, ensuring you're confident and comfortable – you can’t go wrong. Recognising that the modern woman isn’t size 10 and six-foot-tall, more and more boutiques are stocking a much wider range of dress sizes and crucially, sample sizes, in 8 to 36.

IS FOR ENTOURAGE It can be tricky deciding who to bring along to your bridal appointment, but avoid bringing a whole crowd as everyone will have different opinions, which can quickly become overwhelming. We suggest inviting only a select few most important to you, such as your mum, grandmother, siblings or closest friends. Make sure to call ahead to check how many people the boutique allows.

G H F IS FOR FABRIC The fabric you opt for will largely be governed by the style you’ve fallen in love with. Gorgeous floaty chiffon and tulle are delicate, lightweight materials often found in soft, effortless, boho-chic gowns – ideal for summer nuptials. Sparkly tulles, in particular, have been experiencing a heyday. Meanwhile, classic satin with modern twists is also very much en vogue regarding beautifully structured shapes and clean lines.

IS FOR GOWNS There are so many silhouettes and styles to choose from, so start by looking in your own wardrobe to see what vibe you usually veer towards for a special occasion or what you know feels comfortable on your body. If you’re not used to something fitted, your wedding day might not be the time to try – so avoid the fit and flare looks for A-line styles. Likewise, think about your overall vision. For example, a boho rustic event cries out for something relaxed, soft, non-structured and flowing.

IS FOR HAPPY TEARS Fear not, when you find the one, all is not necessarily as we see it on TV with much arm flapping and tears. If you’re not emotional, it’s unlikely you’ll suddenly start while you’re dress shopping, and that’s completely fine. Sometimes, it will simply be a case of weighing up your options and feeling satisfied with your decision. As long as you feel comfortable with that, there’s no reason to doubt it, so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! 59

I

K

IS FOR IVORY Here comes the bride, all dressed in white... or is she? While Queen Victoria made it popular for the bride to wear white, having done so on her wedding day, commitment to this tradition has, by and large, been relegated to the annals of history. More popular hues now are warmer ones such as ivory, of course, as well as Moscato, almond, rum and champagne. If you’re daring, you could even go floral or with something bold. Just be sure the colour complements your skin tone and doesn’t wash you out.

J

L

IS FOR JEWELLERY The fun doesn’t end when you order your dress, as now you can start shopping for your accessories. It’s generally recommended to do this after you’ve decided on your attire, as it’s easier to make the jewellery work with the dress rather than the other way around. The right piece can elevate your look or solve and niggles you may have. Your choice can depend on your neckline, hairstyle and dress details.

M

IS FOR LACE We adore lace! It has long been used in wedding dresses largely thanks to its luxurious nature, having historically been labour-intensive to produce. Once again, Queen Vic is partly responsible for its popularity, sporting handmade lace on her wedding dress. But if you’re now thinking of grandma’s doilies – stop! Modern lace is as varied as it is beautiful.

N

HEELS Once you’ve ordered your gown, it’s time to consider footwear. You’ll need to have your shoes in the bag by the time your alteration appointment comes around, as it’s important to make sure the seamstress knows the exact length the dress needs to be. Heels versus flats will make quite the difference. Make sure you’re comfortable. If you generally live and die in trainers, some gorgeous bridal options exist. Alternatively, many brides make their shoes their wedding treat to themselves and spend months saving for the ultimate Jimmy Choos. Your footwear offers another opportunity to put your stamp on your attire.

IS FOR MONEY It’s easy to get swept up in all the gorgeous gowns on offer, so how do you avoid busting the budget? Before that, how do you settle on one? There’s a general rule of thumb on the internet that says you should allocate five to 10 per cent of your overall budget to the dress. Still, it does depend on what you feel comfortable with and whether this is one of your nonnegotiable elements. We recommend, above all, that you’re realistic about what you want, and the rest will fall into place. For example, if you love lots of detailing and heavy beading, accepting that this isn’t come cheap will stand you in good stead; it’s then up to you whether you want to compromise.

IS FOR NECKLINES As there are many silhouettes to choose from, there is also a world of necklines, each having its part to complement or accentuate your figure. Head to Google and research sweetheart, plunging, off-theshoulder, high, halter, one-shoulder, V, illusion, boat, empire, queen, scoop... we could go on!

O

P 60

IS FOR KICK UP YOUR

IS FOR ONLINE INSPIRATION We know how stressful finding your dream gown can be, so it’s important to look online for inspiration on what features you like or dislike – Pinterest will be your best friend. Many brides go into their appointment with a dress in mind but come out with something completely different, so be open-minded and try on a few different styles to see what suits your body shape and personal style best.

IS FOR PRELOVED If you’d rather invest your cash in other areas of the wedding but don’t want to compromise on your look, you may want to consider looking at preloved gowns. Kinder on the pocket, these dresses will have been worn only once, some not at all, and may be no older than last season.

Q

IS FOR QUICK A sample sale is another budget-saving solution or an idea if you’re short on time. At the end of the season, bridal boutiques will often hold special events where they sell their sample dresses at a reduced cost to give them room for the new lines in the boutique. You’ll be limited in size, so be prepared to spend more on alterations. But they’re ready and waiting for you to take away, so no yearin-advance ordering is required.

T

R

Y

IS FOR REVIEWS As you would when researching any supplier for your W-day team, check out your local bridal boutique’s reviews. They’re understandably proud of the kind words their past brides have shared, so many will have a tab on their website to look through. Alternatively, Facebook is a good place to see what’s hot. If nothing else, they’ll help to reassure you that you’re in good hands if you’re nervous.

S

IS FOR TRENDS County Wedding Magazines’ fashion editor, Claire Ridley, tells us what’s hot in fashion right now... •Plain dresses featuring clean-cut lines with a minimalist aesthetic. •Statement sleeves are here to stay with lightly puffed styles, adding the wow factor. •Lace bodices adorned with beautiful beadwork and voluminous skirts made with layers of organza offering a new take on princess-style dresses. •Contoured corsetry boasting square or strapless necklines. •Wide, low backlines provide a fresh update to the illusion look, as does the option to include a cape veil. •Couture details such as structured box pleats with hidden pockets, lace appliqué and floral motifs

W

BRIDAL BOUTIQUES

IS FOR WILD CARD Our golden rule in wedding dress shopping is to go in with a completely open mind, as tunnel vision could lead to a stressful situation if the style you set your heart on just doesn’t work out how you thought.

IS FOR SLEEVES Sleeves are becoming incredibly popular and offer a multitude of flexible options. Many designs are available with or without them, with detachable sleeves allowing you to change the look from daytime to evening; you can choose the length. Why not chat with your seamstress about adding to gowns that don’t already have them?

U

IS FOR UNIQUE If you’ve found a gown that’s nearly there but not quite, discuss options with your consultant, whether it be a few extra sparkles, lace, appliqué details or buttons. They can often work with you to ensure your dress is everything you ever dreamed of and completely yours. You could even make it super-personal by adding a swatch of fabric from a loved one’s wedding dress or go all out and commission a bespoke gown.

V

IS FOR “YES” How do you know this is the dress for you? We have some ideas... •You don’t want to take it off. •You compare every other dress to it. •You feel beautiful and confident •You can picture yourself walking down the aisle in it. •You’ve already started accessorising in your mind

IS FOR VEIL In day-to-day life, accessories can make or break an outfit; the veil is the bridal version. There's nothing to say you have to keep it on all day; you might switch your look with a hair accessory later on and keep the veil for that ethereal look as you walk down the aisle. Our advice is not to rule it out until you've tried it on.

X Z

IS FOR X-PERT Ok, we cheated a bit, but we couldn’t finish up without extolling the virtues of the fantastic local boutique consultants. They have your best interests at heart, and they know their stuff. When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll have an initial consultation, which will help your stylist understand you and your vision.

IS FOR ZOOM Your dress will inevitably have a little travelling to do like when you collect it and take it to the venue. To keep it in tiptop condition, invest in a good quality, acid-free garment bag to store it in. Once it’s home, keep it away from any harsh light or temperatures. When heading for the venue, lay down the car seats and place the dress flat if you can, or hang from the garment hook. If that fails, just be sure to hang it up again as soon as you arrive. 61

Fashion & Beauty

Q&A Look the best version of you with our expert advice

www.gettyimages.co.uk

RING-A-DING-DING What top tips can you share for cleaning my engagement ring? I’ve heard many old wives’ tales when it comes to cleaning jewellery and more often than not, these tactics won’t give the best sparkle and could cause damage. To clean your gold engagement rings, I’d advise soaking them in warm water for around 20 minutes, then gently brushing the setting with a soft-bristled brush. If you have a significant buildup, add a small amount of soap to the water. Once you’ve finished brushing, gently rinse the ring and dry it with a soft cloth. If you have a white gold engagement ring that starts to look discoloured over time, it might benefit from rhodium plating to regain a bright white appearance. Platinum is one of the harder-wearing metals, so these rings are very durable but will still need regular cleaning to maintain the sparkle. Wash the piece in warm water and soap for around 20 minutes, then gently brush and wipe clean. Ultrasonic machines are another great option as they vibrate away dirt, leaving the ring clean and bright without brushing. It can be common for silver jewellery to develop a dull finish over time, but rest assured, you can get a sparkly finish to your ring once more. The easiest way is to use a silver cleaning cloth, which is readily available and affordable. A few minutes of gentle swiping around the ring band will see the tarnishing come away and the shine return. Silver cleaning solutions allow you to soak your ring to break down any buildup around the setting. You can then follow the same rinsing and drying process as gold. It’s essential to choose the right solution for the metal of your ring and avoid any abrasive cleaners so you don’t cause any damage. If unsure, it’s best to stick to a cleaning cloth. If your ring has developed scratches or small dents or is looking little dull, professional jewellers can offer a more advanced clean and polish with specialist equipment, which can get your ring looking sparkling and new again. Sally Hill | Berry’s Jewellers www.berrysjewellers.co.uk

BRIDAL BEAUTIFUL What advice can you share to ensure I receive the best results for my wedding day? It’s essential to have clean and dry hair for your wedding day! Dirty hair will be oily, which makes your hair heavy and weighs the locks down; this makes it harder to achieve volume and hold curls. For the trial and the big day, wash your hair the night before with two good shampoos. The first removes dirt, while the second cleanses and gives volume. Blow-dry your hair, but don’t use any products and avoid styling tools. Ideally, have any hair accessories, a veil if you’re wearing one, and some inspirational photos during your trial so your hairstylist can understand the vision to bring ideas to life. For the bride and her best girls, wear tops that can be unzipped, unbuttoned or taken off the shoulder to avoid ruining your hair once it has been done – don’t opt for T-shirts or high-neck tops. If wearing robes, ensure there isn’t a huge collar like on a bathrobe. Natalie Marriott | NLM Bridal Hair www.facebook.com/BeautyNatalieNottingham 63

SKINCARE 101 with Adele O ’Donoghue

Holistic therapist and SBC Skincare’s head of education shares her ultimate guide to wedding-prep skincare

A

dele O’Donoghue has gained more than 20 years’ experience working in the skincare industry, which for her all began when she trained as a holistic therapist. During her time practising the valuable techniques she learned, she felt a passion to share her practical, relatable and affordable beauty tips, which is just what she gets to do as a regular guest presenter at QVC and TVSN. Plus, as head of education for SBC Skincare she strives to ensure the brand brings relatable conversations to the forefront, ensuring everyone feels understood

and included. So, who better to turn to for advice on handling wedding stress and the toll that can take on your body, as well as on achieving that flawless complexion in time for the big day? Beauty and wellness editor Kelly Andrews quizzed Adele in search of answers. What do you love about SBC, what makes it different? SBC is a small independent British skincare brand that has an exceptional reputation within the industry. We’ve been supplying skincare solutions to the professionals for over 30 years. The trust and reputation we’ve built over that time makes me extremely proud. Every formula is made in small batches in the UK, which gives us complete ingredient traceability and quality control. SBC Skincare remains an affordable, luxurious brand with exceptional customer loyalty built upon results. What are your top skincare tips for our brides-to-be? Wherever possible, begin to take care of your skin and wellbeing sooner rather than later. Don’t make dramatic last-minute changes a few weeks before your wedding that may cause a reaction. Great results don’t rely on one facial the week before your wedding but on consistent care over a longer period until you’re glowing on your day. Try to cut out overly processed foods too. Eat a diet rich in colourful vegetables and fruits, as well as protein, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Great skincare starts from within so eat your skin beautiful. How can holistic therapy help with wedding planning fatigue and stress? Holistic therapy doesn’t have to be complex or reserved for expensive retreats. Simply having an awareness that our everyday rituals including the small habits and thought patterns could have an impact on our emotional and physical wellbeing can improve our stress levels. Taking the time to understand your own personal stress triggers and circumstances can help you to adjust to a demanding lifestyle. Changes to diet and sleep habits will improve energy levels and by prioritising yourself in these ways, your self-worth, mental clarity, and confidence will improve. 66

Breakouts are a common side effect of stress. How can we prevent and treat these so as not to jeopardise the look of wedding make-up? Try to prevent stress by introducing some self-care practices. Ensure that some of your daily exercise includes mindful stretching and meditation, yoga is always a great choice. If you have time before your wedding, try introducing a retinol into your regime. Considered the gold standard of skin care, retinols accelerate cell turnover to reveal fresher, younger skin cells and decrease congestion. Always apply in the evening followed by a broad-spectrum SPF the following day. Regular facials aren’t always within budget. Can you recommend a daily at-home self-care/skincare regime to perfect the complexion in time for the big day? You can most definitely achieve great results at home, make sure your basic regime is consistent. Always cleanse thoroughly morning and night, apply broad-spectrum SPF during the day and a daily moisturiser regardless of your skin type. Protecting your natural barrier is key to achieving healthy strong skin so look for ceremides, lipids and antioxidants within your skincare formulas. You can upgrade to salon-worthy skin care by introducing a weekly mask. I’d recommend SBC Hydra-Collagen Clay Mask to purify the skin, while combatting fine lines. To quench thirsty skin, apply one of SBC’s Moisturising Gels: Hydra-Collagen, Hyaluronic, or Propolis & White Willow for example. Use a thick layer to tackle specific concerns while hydrating thirsty skin. What are the biggest trends in skincare at the moment and what’s your favourite? I prefer proven results rather than trends, but I’m delighted to see a return to the clean skin aesthetic. I would, however, urge you not to feel under pressure to achieve flawless skin. Remember that your skin is the most incredible vital organ and feeling comfortable within it and learning to love your own is the real success. Enjoying the process of massaging your skin helps to energise and uplift you before your day begins, and think about just how therapeutic a deep cleanse can be at the end of the day. It all helps us to clear our minds and decompress.

BEAUTY INTERVIEW

Can effective skincare have an impact on mood and stress reduction? Feeling comfortable within your skin will affect your mood and stress levels, particularly if you’re suffering with a skin concern such as sensitivity or irritation. Finding a regime that not only suits your skin but brings back radiance and health is essential for your confidence. As we’re in the midst of winter, how can we protect and treat skin for the ravages of the season? Winter brings different challenges to our skin. The most important thing you can do to protect it is to apply a broad-spectrum SPF regardless of the weather. UV rays are around us 365 days a year and UVA rays that are present in light penetrate deeper into the epidermis where they disrupt the production of collagen and elastin.Look for skin care containing nourishing and repairing ingredients, such as propolis, rosehip oil and hyaluronic acid to protect and maintain the skin’s natural barrier that may be compromised by harsh winter stresses. Dry and stressed skin can really benefit from the addition of a balm, such as the Propolis & Honey Rescue Balm. Finally, indulge in some winter habits you’ll love! Our Arnica & Sandalwood Muscle Soak creates a warming cocoon to soak cold, tired muscles with a beautifully comforting aromatic.

unsettled, but a well-established sleep regime will really help. SBC’s Night Rituals range is formulated with a luxurious sleep-inducing fragrance and enriched with magnesium and silk proteins. Wedding gowns with plunging necklines and open backs are on trend at the moment. What can brides do to make sure skin shown off looks its best. Exfoliation is the skincare key to that vital glow! SBC’s Glycolic Serum is a lightweight body moisturiser that contains a carefully balanced blend of AHA’s to gently remove the dry, dull skin cells on the surface of the skin to reveal fresh, young, and plump skin cells. It also helps to prep before any hair removal, preventing in growing hairs, and of course, if your thing is using self-tan, it will ensure a radiant finish. What product can’t you live without in your beauty kit? SBC Hydra-Collagen Replenishing Cream Cleanser. Nothing else in your regime will work to optimum levels without an effective, respectful cleanser. I love the texture of the nourishing cream that leaves my skin soft and hydrated. Everything else works far better with a great base. CHECK OUT... https://sbcskincare.co.uk www.instagram.com/adeleodskincare

Dry, oily or combination skin. Complexions don’t always fit into one of these tidy boxes. Is it possible to tailor a regime to suit the specific needs of an individual’s skin? While it’d be great if life were that simple, we know it rarely is. Don’t feel the need to commit to one whole skincare range but choose your serum to tackle and visibly change your main concern such as pigmentation or fine lines and wrinkles. Look for textures that suit your skin type with specific actives that relate to your skin’s needs and finally, find formulas you can afford to change according to the season and hormonal fluctuations. How can we achieve that sought after bridal glow on the morning of? Try to set a healthy sleeping pattern at least a couple of months before your wedding, it really is one of the most important factors to ensure you’re caring for both your emotional and physical wellbeing. We understand that sleep the night before your wedding may be a little 67

PLANNING SOS We’ve just started wedding planning; what advice can you share? Money is often a tricky subject to speak about, but oh so very important! If you don’t get this right from the outset, it may return to bite! Before you buy or book anything or visit any venues, agree and decide on your budget envelope or financial comfort zone. This is so important as all your wedding planning decisions will depend on it, like when you want to get married, the location, guestlist, the style and the size of your wedding party – the list goes on. Be clear about the price and understand if any contributions come with ‘strings’, conditions or expectations attached. Remember who you are and choose a wedding style that suits you both! It’s fine if you’re comfortable with formality and that’s what you’re looking for, but don’t be pressured into opting for a style that doesn’t reflect you – this goes for choosing your suppliers too! Identify your ‘must haves’ and ‘don’t wants’ like if you want to get married and have your reception in the same venue or if you wish to have accommodation on-site for guests, just the wedding party or if you don’t want to have guests staying at the venue. A wedding to-do list or checklist will help identify what you need to do and by when. It’s important to be organised and realistic about the time and the skills you have. If the blank canvas wedding appeals to you, maybe a marquee on private grounds, a dry hire venue option or a multiday celebration, do your homework to find out precisely what will bring your wedding vision to life. What help do you need? Do you have access to the level and type of help you need? Do you need to enlist an expert? Try not to get too obsessed with wedding planning, which sounds a little strange coming from a wedding planner, but try to make time for regular breaks from your plans to spend time with each other. Enjoy being engaged rather than seeing it as a gap between single and married. If you need help knowing where to begin with your wedding plans or are starting to feel overwhelmed and require extra help, don’t worry as we’re here to help! Our Planning Inspiration Session is the perfect

solution. We’ll sit down with you for a two-hour consultation and ensure you have the information you need to help you progress your plans without worrying about what you might have forgotten! Use the session to kickstart your wedding plans or later in your planning if you feel like you’re losing your way or hitting a roadblock. YOUR TYPE ON PAPER We’re looking for the perfect stationery while keeping it as sustainable as possible; what advice can you share? There is a range of cardstocks for eco-conscious couples, from recycled options that reduce the demand for new paper production to seed paper that can grow flowers. There’s even a tree-free paper option which uses cotton, bamboo and hemp! If a recycled and seeded option isn’t your vibe, ask your stationer if they can use a printer that uses Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper. Being FSC certified ensures that the paper has come from woodland that has been responsibly managed. Designing your invites yourself? Find a local printer that will cut your carbon footprint when shipping. Bonus points if they use eco-friendly materials, such as vegetable-based inks that are less toxic than petroleum-based ones. Lastly, look at going minimal with your design and utilise the space that you have on your invitations. Can you print on both sides? Could you move some information onto a website, removing the extra card insert? Take out the RSVP card and ask your guests to respond digitally, allowing a reduction in paper waste and managing your responses. Becky Brown | Quirky Fonts | www.quirkyfonts.co.uk

EXPERT ADVICE IT’S A SPRING THING

www.meganwilson.net

I’m set to tie the knot next spring, and I’d love to include some of the season’s most beautiful flowers. What do you suggest? Tulips are the flowers most associated with the coming of spring, made famous in the Dutch Golden Age, and the subject of those gorgeous Dutch Master paintings. As much as I love them, especially the glamorous double ones, spring doesn’t always have to mean tulips. The start of the season is represented by the speckled hellebore in pale rose, pistachio and ivory hues, which are particularly lovely in buttonholes. After this come the early sleepy snowdrops of February, which look fabulous delicately placed in small and low bowls on any wedding tablescape. The blooming of the early spring blossom, blush magnolia, pure white cherry blossom and spirea stems quickly follow these florals and look so light and airy in any spring bouquet. As the season progresses, think of scented narcissi, frothy lilac and viburnum blossom, delft blue muscari and beautiful milky anemones with their velvety dark centres. April signals the arrival of one of my favourites of all wedding flowers, the plum-chequered tiny nodding heads of the fritillary, which give a sprinkling of fluttering flowers hovering over the top of wedding florals. A feeling of movement in a bridal bouquet creates such a mood of lightness. How about some jewel-like auricles in vintage terracotta pots down the centre of a wedding breakfast table? All my brides love the last bloom to flower, the queen of the springtime flower, the ranunculus with layered petals like a ballerina tutu. It’s a perfect alternative to peonies. Think of a spring wedding bouquet full of anemones, blossom, muscari, ranunculus and tulips. Nikki McKinney | The Bell Jar Flowers | www.thebelljarflowers.co.uk

BEAUTIFULLY BESPOKE What are the benefits of hiring a celebrant for our wedding? You’ve named the date, booked the venue and decided what to call your social media hashtag for the big day, but the critical bit is the promises you make to the love of your life. If you’re having a civil ceremony, these are the words used by every other couple getting hitched. There’s not a lot of wriggle room for registrars or clergy to personalise a ceremony to reflect you as a couple. That’s where celebrants come in! We write and deliver bespoke ceremonies that tell your love story, like how you met, what you love about each other and why you want to spend your lives together. Think of it as a handmade suit or a couture gown; it will only ever fit you. We can’t do the legal bit yet, but that’s just signing a piece of paper. Instead, we can create something you and your guests will never forget. You can make personal promises and vows to each other with several symbolic rituals, including handfasting, where the phrase ‘tie the knot’ comes from, lighting a unity candle and exchanging rings. If you want to be a bit left field, how about alpacas as ring bearers or tequila shots at the end? Your celebrant will find out all about you while probably asking the best man and bridesmaids a few questions before creating the perfect ceremony that you get to approve based entirely on what you want. If you’re stuck for inspiration, we have tons of ideas. The best part of a celebrant-led wedding is that it can occur anywhere, like your favourite restaurant, stately home or back garden. Your ceremony should be uplifting and heart-warming. It should make your loved ones smile and maybe occasionally sniff. It’s a huge milestone in your life, and it should be all about you, so let’s do it! Jane Barbeary | Nuptials and Naming Ceremonies www.nuptials-and-naming-ceremonies.co.uk

JEWEL OF THE AISLE What advice can you share when it comes to sustainable wedding jewellery? First, think about any vintage or antique jewellery you may already own. Maybe you have a piece passed down from your family that you haven’t worn because it’s not your style that could be transformed to create something new and wearable. Look for small-scale jewellery makers who often work with brides on bespoke designs and remodelling; this gives new life to old jewellery and reduces the impact your big day will have on the environment. If you’re looking for new wedding jewellery, choose a small brand or a jeweller who uses recycled metals and materials to eradicate the need for new precious metals to be mined. Handcrafted jewellery is the best way to ensure your pieces are as ethical and sustainable as possible. Independent brands who make their jewellery in the UK often use local sources and suppliers, which means your jewellery has a much lower carbon footprint. Finally, you’ll want to ensure that your jewellery is made to be long-lasting and versatile so that it can be worn beyond your big day for many years to come, adding to its sustainability. WEDDING RINGS

How to choose the perfect wedding ring

J

ewellery expert Sach Kukadia from 7879 shares the differences between platinum, gold and white gold rings.

What is a platinum ring? Platinum is a naturally white metal that is both harder to find and more durable than gold. It’s used in a much purer form than white gold, which is why it’s also typically more expensive. The durability of platinum is one of the many reasons it’s a popular choice for wedding rings. This is based primarily on the common belief that it is entirely scratch-proof. While this is technically true, it doesn’t mean your ring will be completely free of blemishes throughout its lifetime. Platinum is also a hypoallergenic metal, making it a fantastic choice for sensitive skin. Unlike white gold, which is commonly plated with rhodium, the absence of these alloys in platinum jewellery means you can purchase it safely, knowing that there’s a low chance you’ll have a reaction. What is a 24-karat gold ring? The other option when considering metal wedding rings is, of course, 24-karat gold. It’s a soft metal, making it easier to scratch and dent than platinum. That being said, 24-karat gold is a beautiful metal that many couples choose for their wedding rings. It has a warm, golden hue that complements every skin tone, and its softness makes it easy to mould into any shape or style. As is the case with platinum, 24-karat gold is also a hypoallergenic metal, making it another great option for sensitive skin. It also requires less maintenance than other metals with just a polish every now and then.

your fingers are usually a bit smaller when your hands are cold! Keep in mind that platinum is a heavier metal than gold, so if you think you’d be uncomfortable with a heavier ring, 24-karat gold may be the way to go. Adversely, many people choose platinum over gold because of the added weight. Which one is right for you? Ultimately, the decision is completely up to you. Try both styles to see what will work best with your preferences, budget and lifestyle.

Budget Considering you will ideally be wearing your wedding ring every day, it’s a good idea to choose something that you really like and is high quality. Since 24-karat gold is more expensive than platinum, if you’re on a budget, platinum could be the way to go. Plus, if you’re a little clumsy with your jewellery already, it may be best to invest in something slightly more durable. Shape and size The most important thing is to find a shape, metal and size that you’re happy with and comfortable wearing. Due to its quality, the best ring metals are also the most comfortable. When sizing, ensure your rings are big enough not to be uncomfortable but small enough not to fall off. Remember that

Strictly Come Dancing star and Shakeup ambassador, Neil Jones reveals his skincare tips for grooms-to-be

O

ur grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Strictly Come Dancing star and Shakeup ambassador, Neil Jones, to discuss male skincare. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their skin in the run-up to the big day? Research potential products and test them on a small part of your skin a few weeks before the wedding. If everything is good, work out a simple routine of cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturising, and try to add in a weekly mask to help get your skin in shape for the big day. Keep to a routine that works for you, and drink plenty of water, as it will help massively. On the big day, use a face spray to refresh the skin in case you get a bit hot and nervous. It’s also good at taking away any oiliness or shine. Do you have a skincare routine you would recommend? I always use a face wash, followed by a clarifying toner, serum and moisturiser. My routine is pretty straightforward, and it suits my skin and its needs. I use the Shakeup Face 4Ward Multi-Action Facial Wash, the brilliant Face 4Ward Pro-Youth Serum, and the trusty Hydrate in a Hurry Moisturising Stick. I’m also obsessed with the Shakeup Age Def-Eye Instant Lifting Eye Cream. With a new baby and a Strictly schedule, it’s certainly helping me look like I’ve had a good night’s sleep when I haven’t. Throughout the day, I use a moisturiser or

face spray to keep my skin soft and hydrated, and then in the evening, I follow the same process. A couple of nights a week, I like to use the You Do the Mask Purifying Clay Mask from Shakeup to help banish any buildup and blemishes. Tell us about your own healthy living regime. How do you stay fit and healthy in between series and tours? Well, honestly, this is something I struggled with in the past, as you just want to rest and recover. But now I’m finding that the best way to recover is with active recovery, which means I continue in the gym but with strength and mobility because my body needs to be able to move. I’m a big ice and cold-water therapy fan, as I find it helps with my blood flow, and mental state, so I take regular ice baths and daily cold showers. I’ve also decided to reduce sugar in my life, but I’ll still have the occasional cake or dessert but no soft drinks. I now drink a lot of tea, black and herbal, plus matcha and as much water as I can, but I’ve never really indulged in alcohol or coffee. Eating the right foods gives our body the vital fuel it needs, and knowing what ingredients are in them and asking where they came from is just as important. You can still have a hamburger, but it’s about the quality. People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our skin? Great question, and one I am excited and passionate about. I truly feel that if we eat and

76

shop more locally, it will have a massive positive impact. I know this is not always possible, but I try to search for a local farm or farmer’s shop, butcher or baker. I’m also looking into how I use my garden because we can grow so much of the food that we use to cook. It’s all about using what we have. Nature provides food in its own protective packaging, so don’t buy it if it’s in extra cellophane. Just one step at a time, day by day, small changes can help. What products couldn’t you live without? Without a doubt, it’s the Shakeup Hydrate in a Hurry Moisturising Stick – it’s an essential, and I also can’t live without my Murdock Beard Moisturiser. The new Shakeup Age Def-Eye Instant Lifting Eye Cream is also a must. It’s helping tackle those eye bags and dark circles I have right now! How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle amidst the pressures of a hectic schedule? It’s really hard, but it’s all about discipline, preparation and balance. Plan your meals and prepare them because you can’t make decisions when you’re hungry or tired. Get enough good-quality sleep and spend as much time as you can being happy with loved ones. Is there anything you can suggest to calm the stress levels during wedding planning? A cold shower! It helps you feel less stressed and brings your blood pressure down. Shakeup products are available from www.shakeupcosmetics.com and www.amazon.co.uk

hilst I sit here in mid-October wrapped up in a blanket, jumper, and thermal socks, my mind can’t help but wander back to earlier in the year when I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Dubrovnik, a city in southern Croatia. Ideal for those of you who are looking for a city break and a beach-side destination, Dubrovnik is a must-visit destination with everything you need for the perfect honeymoon.

ARRIVE IN STYLE My Dubrovnik adventure began bright and early in the morning when I was whisked away to the airport by a private taxi from Jayride. My driver arrived ahead of schedule, picking me up in a luxury vehicle; his friendly demeanour made the journey fly by and, before I knew it, we’d arrived at our destination London Gatwick Airport. A pleasant three-hour flight later, via easyJet, I’d arrived in Croatia ready to begin my adventure in earnest. I couldn’t wait to visit the filming locations for Game of Thrones, having been an avid fan of the TV series for years, and to see what other delights the city had to offer.

A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD A brief drive from the airport and I’d arrived at my accommodation, Valamar Tirena Hotel. Perfectly situated near the beach and the Old Town, the four-star resort has everything I look for in a holiday: culture, friendly staff and luxurious rooms. There are over 208 bedrooms to choose from, many with seaside views, and I was pleased to find mine had a king-sized bed, impressive views and a walk-in rainfall shower – I could have happily spent most of my trip just in the bedroom.

you also have access to the venue’s sister hotels, home to delicious restaurants and my favourite area, the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Located inside the Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel, the spa had all the luxuries you’d expect, such as a steam bath, saunas, a Vitality bar, a relaxation lounge and both indoor and outdoor pools. I spent most of my time by the indoor pool, surrounded by spacious loungers, I loved curling up with a good book and enjoying the peace and quiet. Losing track of time, I’d almost drifted off to sleep when the lovely masseuse came to collect me for my massage. I’ve suffered from neck ache for years, probably due to having a desk job, so I always jump at the chance to have a treatment. Feeling my worries (and knots!) drift away, the masseuse did a wonderful job and 35-minutes later I felt like a new person.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Amongst my friends and family, it’s no secret that I’m a fussy eater, and I often feel overwhelmed when eating at a restaurant; so, I was a bit apprehensive when I arrived for lunch at Oliva Grill, the hotel’s à la carte restaurant by the pool. In hindsight, I feel silly as the menu had so many mouth-watering options that I wanted to try them all. I opted for the carbonara pasta, which was delicious, and I couldn’t wait to come back another day to try the tuna steak that I saw several other diners enjoying profusely. For dinner, the Valamar Tirena’s buffet restaurant is a must-try. I love a buffet, but it’s hard to know when to stop, and that was the exact problem I found myself having each evening. Everything looked so appetising that I had to try it all. Naturally, I also found space for a dessert…or two.

REST AND RELAXATION

FUN IN THE SUN

One of the best things about staying at the Valamar Tirena Hotel is that

Before arriving in Croatia, one of the things I was most excited about was

HONEYMOON

Dubrovnik’s largest play area – Maro World. Ideal for all age groups, it has everything from interactive games, trampolines, and softplay zones to gaming lounges filled with all the latest tech. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop wandering around the 13 different play areas and was very tempted to take my shoes off and try the slides out for myself. With highly trained staff on-site, you can relax knowing your children are taken care of while you enjoy some me-time by the pool, or treat yourself to a spa treatment. Or if you’re a big kid like me, you can even join in with the fun and challenge your kids to a whole host of games and activities. I couldn’t wait to tell my nephews all about Maro World and I have promised to bring them for a visit soon.

A SEA OF DREAMS After spoiling my inner child, it was time to venture out and explore Dubrovnik and what better way than by boat? The marina was a short drive away, and before I knew it, I was on a private vessel heading around the Elaphiti Islands. These magnificent islands are a wonder to behold and as with many stunning locations, the pictures don’t quite do them justice. Jetting around the islands, our boat’s captain chose the perfect spot to drop anchor, giving us an opportunity to swim with the many fish that call the Adriatic Sea home. Diving near the awe-inspiring reefs and caves is a must for anyone visiting the area and is one of the many highlights of my trip.

HISTORIC WONDERS Old Town is an essential destination for anyone visiting Dubrovnik, but the best way to travel, in my humble opinion, is by electric tuk tuk. I wasn’t sure what to expect when the vehicle arrived at our hotel, but before I knew it, we were careering through the streets and mountains of Croatia. Our kind driver even stopped at Dubrovnik Bridge to give the group a moment to snap some pictures and stand in awe of the impressive architecture. With the wind in my hair and the sun beating down on me, I found myself wishing to live in that moment forever. Old Town was everything that I had imagined it to be, with streets steeped in a rich history, I could imagine various Game of Thrones characters scheming around every corner! Our guide told us about Croatia’s past, showing us the beautiful buildings and

introducing the group to friendly locals and what I’d been waiting for: Fort Lovrijenac (AKA King’s Landing!). I must have taken a hundred pictures of Old Town, but looking back, I don’t feel any of them really came close to capturing its beauty; it’s truly a location that needs to be seen to be believed. Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, we were escorted to a cable car, which elevated us up to Srđ Mountain. Providing impressive views of Old Town and the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, the sights were breathtaking. Situated at the top of the 415-metre-high mountain was Panorama Restaurant. A highly desired location, the restaurant not only has the views in its favour, but the food and drink were also spectacular. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have visited this picturesque setting, and I would highly recommend the location to anyone thinking of visiting Dubrovnik.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY For the evening’s entertainment, I was treated to a performance of a musical rendition of Around the World in Eighty Days, written by Jules Verne and performed at Lovrijenac Fort in the Old Town. Having never read the book and knowing a little about the plot, I was excited and interested to see how the story had been translated into a musical. Commissioned especially for the Dubrovnik audience, the play was full of slapstick comedy, catchy tunes and fabulous acting; it was a joy to watch and the perfect way to finish my last day. Lovrijenac Fort hosts a variety of shows throughout the year, so be sure to check out what’s showing when you visit. A short taxi trip back to the hotel, and a couple of drinks later, it was time to hit the sheets. I awoke the next morning dreading checking out. I wanted to spend longer in my little piece of paradise and was heartbroken to be leaving. I’m looking forward to returning with my husband and showing him just how wonderful this city truly is.

HONEYMOON BLISS Whether you’re looking for a relaxing honeymoon, an on-the-go adventure or a family-moon, the Valamar Hotels have something to suit. There’s plenty to see and do across the different properties that will leave you wanting to move there permanently.

Viva España! Kelly Andrews experiences the finer side of life at Hostal de La Gavina in Spain’s Costa Brava

M

y name is Kelly, I’m 42 years old, British and I’ve never been to Spain. Never. How did I manage to miss out on the quintessential Brits abroad destination? Probably because that exact connotation was all I’d ever seen of Spain: Ibiza, 18-30 holidays, and all that jazz. It didn’t appeal. How wrong was I? Let me tell you, the breathtakingly beautiful Costa Brava could not be further from all of that. Having been on my first adventure to sunny Spain recently, I’m happy to report it’s now my most beloved part of the world, which I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to honeymooners, and here’s why...

THE GOLDEN AGE OF LUXURY Nestled between two secluded bays on the Costa Brava, Spain’s less trodden coastline, S’Agaro’s Hostal de La Gavina sings with elegance, luxury and old-world glamour from every corner. Since opening in 1932, the hotel has been patronised by stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age including Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne and Peter Sellers; and, for me at least, evokes memories of classics such as To Catch A Thief with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Indeed, Pandora starring Ava Gardner, Suddenly Last Summer starring Elizabeth Taylor and Mr Arkadin by Orson Welles were all shot here. With 74 suites and rooms with sweeping views over the Mediterranean, its effortless style and second-to-none hospitality will give you a honeymoon to remember. Comfortably ensconced in one of the hotel’s 11 superior rooms, I was very much taken with its Mediterranean romance. The balcony terrace and its breathtaking view is something I’ll never forget. From the moment I arrived and swung open the doors, I sat there looking out to sea and would quite happily still be there now. It was definitely the most difficult farewell when the time came to leave. For two honeymooners enjoying breakfast here, surely there could be nothing better. The glorious shining jewel in the hotel’s crown though is the Royal Suite,

which has played host to Spanish royalty, celebs and honeymooners alike. Stepping through its doors is akin to entering a stately home. Designed in spectacular Louis XV style, the walls are adorned with wood and silks, while Sevres vases, only otherwise found in the Louvre, decorate the alcoves. The opulent, genuine Bohemian candle-glass chandelier is the sitting room’s centrepiece and looms large above the decorative marble floor. Of course, the large terrace spanning the width of the suite is a highlight, complete with loungers and patio set ready and waiting for lazy days sipping champagne and enjoying a bite to eat. The first free moment I got during the trip, not caring a jot for the rain (which we brought with us from Blighty) I made a beeline for the outdoor, seawater pool. I’d been excited to take a dip from the moment I arrived. Bobbing along alone in the bracingly icy, buoyant waters, looking out over the bay at sunset was an experience of sheer bliss. Of course, during the warmer months with the sun beating down on it, the pool will offer you yet another vibe, but this was heavenly for me! Alongside the pool, facing the Med, is the Gavina Spa. Its privileged indoor swimming area boasts magnificent views over the bay of S’Agaro along with a Jacuzzi, two spaces for massages and treatments, plus saunas and a small gym room.

A FOODIE’S PARADISE In nearby Girona, there are no fewer than 18 Michelin stars held between 12 restaurants, including one with three, and Hostal de La Gavina is very much part of that local foodie culture. Indeed, the hotel’s signature restaurant, Candlelight, is overseen by Michelin-starred chef Romain Fornell. Renowned for its exquisite haute cuisine menu, the restaurant combines tradition and modernity in its beautifully tranquil setting where candles flicker and piano music fills the air. I had the privileged opportunity to try the eight-course Spring Collection tasting menu, which was utterly unforgettable. Dishes included white asparagus, beurre blanc

HONEYMOON REVIEW

and caviar; tortellini of langoustine and foie with Nantua cream; and squab in two firings with souffle potatoes. All was expertly paired with unbelievable wine selections by the knowledgeable sommelier. Equally unmissable is La Taverna del Mar, located on the beach of Sant Pol, just a two-minute walk from the hotel. Let’s be clear, seafood is a big deal here, as it is for the region as a whole, and this eatery will bring you the freshest and very best. It was here I discovered Catalonian delicacy sonsos, or Mediterranean sand eel. Fried and crispy it’s delicious served with a chilled glass of local white wine. Plus, the serving of wild sea bass in a sea salt crust is a wonderful piece of theatre, not to mention the perfect way to cook fish. It’s also well worth trying Galician clams and red tuna tartare. In fact, whatever the experts suggest, trust me, go with it. I’ve never eaten seafood like it and given the restaurant’s partnership with local fisherman to deliver the freshest fare, I likely never will again. For a lighter meal in between dips, head to poolside restaurant Garbi. Its light and healthy menu offers many of the delights found in the renowned Mediterranean diet. The paella here is to die for!

on Carrer Ciutadans. For dessert the final stop was the oh-so quirky, Wonkaesque Rocambolesc Gelerateria. As I was visiting during Girona’s Temp de Flors (Flower Festival) they were offering new floral flavours created especially for the occasion, which had to be tasted! If you’re a wine enthusiast, a little further out of town you’ll find Clos d’Agon (https://closdagon.com), a 15th-century vineyard based around a picturesque historical farmhouse. Hostal de La Gavina has recently partnered with it to offer guests exclusive wine experiences. I met the estate’s Nora for a fascinating tour, where I learned of the vineyard’s own micro climate, which allows it to be ecological as the wind clears the humidity creating the perfect environment for its fruit. The grapes are all picked by hand so only the best ones get through at harvest time allowing the passionate winemakers, such as Miguel, to make award-winning wines. Although the aforementioned wet weather didn’t permit us to, you do have the chance to idyllically picnic among the vines, as you indulge in a glass of the wonderful Clos d’Agon Valmaña wine with cheese and charcuterie board.

OUT AND ABOUT

TAKE IN THE VIEW

Just one hour north of Barcelona and half an hour from beautiful Girona, Hostal de La Gavina is excellently appointed for exploring the Costa Brava. I headed into the medieval city of Girona for a culinary tour and thoroughly recommend a visit. Catalans are quite rightly very proud of their local dishes and delicacies, and during the tour I had the opportunity to sample many of them. If you’re in town, do seek out a xiuxiu for breakfast. Made from an old Girona recipe these sweet treats can only be found in the city and its surroundings. When in Catalonia it’s virtually impossible not to try some jamon (Iberico ham), unless of course you’re vegetarian or vegan in which case there’s no shortage of equally divine alternative local bites. Served with some Manchego cheese or perhaps some local Catalan goat’s cheese and a glass of Cava it’s a real treat. I became addicted in a very short space of time! Girona was originally a city of traders, which is a heritage still evident in the city’s food markets. With vegetables at least three times the size of anything I’d ever seen before and more fresh fish than you could ever dream of finding in your local Morrisons – anchovies, cod tartare, sonsos – they’re worth looking in on. Paella is of course a must-have in Spain, but if you get the chance, do try Catalan speciality Fideua, made from short noodles instead of rice. Packed so full of flavour, you won’t be happy until you’ve finished the dish! I stopped at L’Arròs &... for mine, an intimate seafood restaurant

For days when you’re looking to stay a little closer to base, the Cami de Ronda coastal path (www.camideronda.com) runs alongside Hostal de La Gavina. The entire 43-kilometre stretch would take around two days to walk in its entirety, but you can enjoy a gentle stroll in stretches however you wish. I thoroughly enjoyed a short 30-minute stint along the bay, with it’s breathtaking views of S’Agaro, the Mediterranean and the historical hotel with its folly, a particular treat first thing in the morning. So, there you have it. The Costa Brava is an idyllic corner of the world, a paradise for foodies, wine lovers and history buffs alike. Whether you’re looking to relax and enjoy the luxurious surroundings, or set out on an adventure to explore the region, Catalonia has so much to offer and Hostal de La Gavina is a dream of a base.

Parisian elegance

Part of the prestigious Oetker Collection, Le Bristol Paris is everything you could dream of from a once in a lifetime visit to La Ville-Lumière, The City of Light. Rachel Westall checks it out...

I

f a honeymoon with the wow factor is what you’re after, you’ve found it. The iconic Le Bristol Paris is located at one of the city’s most prestigious addresses on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The hotel opened in April 1925, when the roaring twenties were in full swing. During that carefree and prosperous era, Paris attracted all the big movers and shakers from the worlds of culture and fashion: think Balenciaga, Chanel, Schiaparelli, Picasso, Mondrian and Dali. Over the years, famous clients have continued to parade through the doors of Le Bristol Paris: from Rita Hayworth to Charlie Chaplin. Today, photographers still anticipate who will be revolving through the entrance of this chic establishment. This fashionable location is at the heart of Paris, moments’ walk from Metro line Madelaine and walking distance to sights including the Tuileries, Les Invalides and Musee d’Orsay. When you want to rest your feet from city life, the indoor rooftop pool on the sixth floor makes this hotel a cut above the rest. Expect views over Montmartre and the Eiffel Tower. Utterly breathtaking. The spa, backing onto a courtyard garden, offers a menu of luxurious treatments. There are eight treatment rooms, including a private couple suite. What more could you want after a morning at The Louvre than a soothing, restorative massage?

HONEYMOON

PEACEFUL PARIS Did you know, Le Bristol was the first hotel in France to receive the title of Palace? This is a much higher honour than being a five-star hotel. The rooms really are the epitome of comfort – and they’re huge! Indulge in suites with beautiful Louis XV and Louis XVI-period furniture and original artworks. Vast marble bathrooms have roomy showers and deep tubs; many have dual vanities, Dyson hairdryers and plush toiletries. Le Bristol’s Junior Suites can be extended with adjoining Deluxe rooms to create more space for the entire family. Everyone is welcome.

WELCOME HOME Le Bristol Paris is a house of incomparable Parisian style and elegance, where you immediately feel at home. It has an extraordinary way of welcoming guests from the moment you enter. Expect warmth, conversation and even a sighting of Socrate, the resident hotel cat. For pet-owning guests, Le Bristol Paris is singular in its ability to welcome fourlegged family members. As a family-run hotel, VIP treatment is waiting for your mini me’s! Children receive a welcome gift on arrival, as well as special surprise in the room, and the concierge team can arrange a wide range of activities in and around Paris that are sure to appeal to young and old alike. There’s even a kid’s club!

THE SECRET GARDEN A favourite place of mine was the new garden - a hidden treasure where you forget you’re in the French capital. It’s an oasis of flowers and calm where each tree, shrub and flower was deliberately chosen with care by Lady Arabella Lennox – Boyd, world-renowned landscape designer.

HOME TO FOUR MICHELIN STARS Foodies’, there’s no need to leave your hotel. At Epicure restaurant, chef Eric Frechon, who holds four Michelin stars, has created a celebrated establishment that’s typically French and fabulous. White tablecloths and immaculate attention to detail, this is for special occasions. Secondly, there’s the less formal Le 114 Faubourg, for lunch and dinner, which also possesses its own Michelin star. Here, sample dishes such as hand-chopped beef tartar flavoured with anchovies, and potato wafers or Grenebloise style roasted brill, cauliflower mousseline with seaweed butter – mouthwatering. Furthermore, Café Antonia reflects a more spontaneous side of Parisian life, where you can enjoy breakfast, stop for coffee or enjoy afternoon tea or a glass of wine. Le Bristol really is a reason in itself to visit the City of Love. You’ll fall head over heels time and time again.

Keep your Wedding Flowers Forever Preserve your bouquet

Flowers are special and meaningful. They make people smile, spread positivity and are good for mental health, creating happiness and joy. Flowers are a very special part of a wedding for many. But they do not last forever. A way that your bouquet can be preserved forever is by pressing it into clay. My mission is to make so many more brides happy by preserving their special bouquets into everlasting, heart-warming keepsakes using my developed, bespoke way of preserving flowers forever.

Flowers can be fresh or dried – if you have a bouquet up in the loft gathering dust, this is an opportunity to have it made into something special that will last forever! Choose from a vase, jug, wall hanging tiles, bowls, coasters, house number plaques and more, plus thank you gifts for family or suppliers. “I knew about Charlotte since my sister had her wedding bouquet preserved by her and as soon as I got engaged I knew I wanted to do the same. Charlotte’s communication with her clients is great and emails were always replied to very quickly. The process was so simple, I posted my flowers and she kept me updated throughout. Our ceramic pieces now take pride of place in our home and constantly remind us of our special day! Highly recommended!”
