he goal is to remodel or build a new home that will be a great place for anyone to live for the rest of their life.
In 1997, my physical condition was degenerating to the point that I had a very difficult time walking. A friend suggested that true power was not in doing everything in life but rather becoming the CEO of oneâ€™s life. From that profound comment, I created the possibility of a life that worked without compromise no matter the circumstances. In 2002, I renovated my first home without limits with my wife Mary and moved into it. From the stand that all people should live in homes that work, HDC Homes Without Limits was born. Many older people and others with limited mobility find it difficult to remain independent and enjoying well-rounded lives as they always have. A key to this is being able to stay in their homes. And making your home more accessible is not only for your own needs, but to make it more hospitable for others. Most homes have limited flow from living room to kitchen and bedrooms â€“ doorways and halls too narrow for wheelchair access. Bathrooms have impediments such as a curb at the entrance to the shower, and limited room for a wheelchair. Closets are vertical, with racks and shelves out of reach. In the kitchen, appliances, cabinets and working surfaces are too high. Outdoors, sidewalks are usually too narrow for two people to walk side by side, and there are steps at entrances to the house. Swimming pools are very difficult to enter and exit for someone in a wheelchair.
We modify and design homes for greater mobility, accessibility and to put what residents need within easy reach. Examples include wider hallways and doorways, more spacious bathrooms
with roll-in showers, larger walk-in closets with adjustable hanging racks and shelves, kitchens with lower cabinets, working surfaces and appliances with accessible controls. Multiple story homes can be retrofitted with an elevator, installed to look as though it had always belonged in the home. Adding a home elevator is not as expensive as one might think, and really enhances home value. New technology makes possible to control entry locks, security, central phones, lighting, heating and cooling, television, intercom and communications all from a smart phone or tablet computer. Outdoors, walkways are widened and covered where possible, thresholds eliminated, gentle ramps in attractive paving added to replace or complement steps. Patio walls can be set at a comfortable height for sitting, planting beds can be raised to make working in the garden more accessible, and an adult pool for exercising can be added or modified to make it easy for everyone to enter and exit.

The most recent storms were reported throughout St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Franklin County and Jefferson County. It is important to understand that damage to homes and businesses is not always obvious and may not be easily detected by the average homeowner. Hailstorms and damaging winds can be very localized, with some homes in a neighborhood damaged while others are not. Factors such as wind direction and roof pitch determine how much damage is sustained by exposed surfaces of homes - roofs, siding, gutters and downspouts, screens and air conditioning units. The size of hailstones and whether they make direct impact or glancing blows also are factors. To determine damage, insurance companies will send an inspector to your home, right after the storm or up to several months later. Photos on this page show typical damage that can occur from hail and severe windstorms. Impact holes and tattered edges of cedar shingles, denting on a roof vent cap, a dented gutter downspout and a torn window screen help verify hail impact. Hail damage to asphalt roof shingles includes tattered edges, shingle loss, extreme granule loss on shingles and penetration holes. You can also see dents on the fins of an air conditioning unit from a driving hailstorm. Damage from severe winds to asphalt roofs includes lifting, tearing and even missing shingles, as shown on this page. While these signs of damage seem to be obvious, inspectors often miss them, causing claims to be denied or limited to only what the insurance inspector has seen. When the wind gets under asphalt shingles and lifts them, it can pop the glue tabs and nails, causing shingles to tear, not lie down and re-adhere.
Damage to shingles can reduce their useful life and also expose cracks where water can penetrate, making the roof vulnerable to future leaks and more severe exterior and interior damage. If the roof is compromised in this way, it is important that it is completely replaced rather than patched or partially replaced, since there are very likely other areas where the damage is not as obvious. Damage to gutters can cause leaks that rot the soffits where they are attached or cause water to pour down to the foundation or fill window wells, causing further problems. Damage to air conditioning fins can impair operation, reducing air flow and raising the refrigerant temperature, leading to lost performance and reliability. It is important that homeowners have an advocate who can provide a “second opinion” in the event that their insurance company denies or limits their liability to lesser damage than actually exists. Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spa by Master Spas Three years ago, the world’s most famous swimmer teamed up with Master Spas to develop a namesake line of swim spas. It all began when he and his coach Bob Bowman needed a swim spa in which the 6-foot-4 athlete could comfortably work out. He needed a deeper and longer model and more powerful propulsion to swim against. ver since we moved to the St. Louis area four years ago, we wanted to create a great cooking and entertainment area in our back yard. We love to cook, be outdoors, and entertain friends and family, and had a very good idea of exactly what we wanted.”
But this Wildwood family started to give up on having their dream outdoor room. It was clear that our project would be something they had never done before and I was not comfortable with that, and I sensed the builders weren’t either!” They were even going to draw up plans to build a cabin on their lake property just to create the outdoor space they wanted! The family was about to give up on having an outdoor space added to their home when they saw pictures of Heartlands Building Company’s work in this magazine. Once the contract was signed, plans were drawn and Dan, the Heartlands project manager, used 3-D software to let the family see all the details they wanted as well as some features they hadn’t thought of as they were dreamt up. He coordinated with the retaining wall and pool contractors to make sure all aspects of the outdoor area flowed together. “The entire Heartlands team is professional, competent, and experienced. They were so friendly and courteous, they became like part of the family. Unlike most builders we have worked with, they took great pride in keeping the job site clean; never forgetting the site was not just where they work, it’s where we live.” With the help of a structural engineer, Heartlands was able to limit the number of support posts, creating an “open” covered area between the pool and the lower level of the house. The deck above is low maintenance and environmentally friendly Fibron composite. The custom extruded aluminum railing is strong enough to lean on and wide enough to accommodate guests’ cups and plates. The deck adjoins a stone patio with a big, beautiful stone and brick wood burning fireplace. A decorative concrete counter and cooking area sit between the two. Between the fireplace and the infrared heaters Larry recommended, the family was surprised to find that they could use their outdoor room

University City Couple Extends Social Consciousness, Aesthetic Living with Mindful Solar Energy Installation BY CINDY PULLEY
t was an unusually comfortable late summer night in St. Louis on the southern edge of University City, and Mark and Peggy Holly sat on their deck to share their solar energy story as the fading sun’s rays spilled through their unique awning. It made the sunlight dance on the flowers and a fruit-laden tomato plant below. What is so unique about their awning? It is comprised of 14 glass architectural panels that are actually solar photovoltaic energy arrays covering their deck. Not only were Peggy and Mark enjoying their deck garden, they were benefiting financially from those solar panels – which have so far generated up to 80 percent of their monthly electric bill. Mark shared the metered savings tracked by an app on his phone. “You can see here our [electricity] usage since it was installed December 31,” Mark said. “In the winter months we were actually generating 100 percent of our utility costs. During the day the panels collect the solar energy and our [bi-directional] meter would run backward. At night we would draw power.” The Hollys approached their solar energy installation with the same mindfulness they use in their careers, their community involvement, and also in their home improvements. Their home is an elegant reminder of its University City-Clayton neighborhood origins—customized homes built by professionals in the 1920s. They have carefully retained the property’s architecture and character—through window replacements, a kitchen remodel and a “new” bathroom on the home’s original second floor that mimics its early 20th century installation. Over 10 years ago, a 2-story addition was added, and the Hollys’ designer and contractor took pains to match the warm wood floors and the addition’s arch to the one in the home’s front entry. They also made the first floor wheelchair accessible. “We wanted our home to be a place where people could relax and feel welcome, and this addition provides that,” Peggy said of the addition—which consists of a family room, upstairs master suite and deck. There are none of the modern media trappings anywhere on the main level. “No one comes here to watch television,” Peggy said. “We intend this home to be a place for conversation.”
As the conversation with the Hollys unfolded, it became clear that investing in the future by installing solar is more than a sustainability achievement; it is part of their social consciousness. Both of them are actively involved in supporting the arts and both have served on several community boards. All of their dogs have been rescued. Their home is also a gathering place for traveling opera artists who need a room, a kitchen to cook an occasional meal for friends, and a piano for singing practice. Attention to detail was important to the Hollys as they made plans for the solar energy system. “We thought about putting it on our newly renovated garage,” Mark said. Prior to adding the solar system to their history of renovations, they interviewed three companies. The only staff members who had an understanding of sound engineering were the professionals at Missouri Solar Applications (formerly called Certified Solar). “They were the only ones that could answer our questions, and they were the only ones to come up with the solar awning idea.” Mark said. ost Americans don’t realize Missouri’s valuable viticultural contribution to the world’s wine table. They can be forgiven. But they also can become educated.

Beyond the fact that Missouri’s native Norton rootstock helped save the French wine industry in the 1800s, beyond the fact that Hermann was second nationally in wine production before prohibition, there are three significant contributions to the world from Missouri wineries. Taste. Beauty. And fun. The unique native grapes and varietals that spring from Missouri soils are turning heads, and winning awards, both nationally and internationally. That creates a buzz among knowledgeable connoisseurs. Forget all that. I want to visit these Missouri vineyards, discover the beauty, and have some fun. No matter where I go in Missouri, I haven’t seen an ugly winery yet. Quite the contrary. This year nearly two million people will experience a Missouri winery. And one of the best ways to sample the vino and the joie de vivre is along the Weinstrasse.
can pop a cork in just about any direction and hit one of nine wineries in the area. Personally, I gravitate toward beer gardens, especially in this German countryside. Lucky for me the Augusta Brewery beer garden borders the Katy Trail. On a recent bike trip on the trail, I sat down to a plate of curried mussels and a bowl of smoked duck gumbo. But this place serves up something for everybody. Lovers can order an aphrodisiac-inspired meal. Trail joggers can get their hops. And the pious can recite the Beer Prayer, as printed on their playful website.
Cross over the Missouri River to see how a historic town connects with the riverfront. Visit WINE TRUCK Washington, a community heavy into the arts, as evidenced by favorite son Gary Lucy and his world- renowned river scenes. When you walk into the Visitor’s Center at Washington, Missouri, you’re entering a historic passenger train station. Adorned with photographs and displays of old trains—and riverboats too—it’s a living museum, which doubles as the Amtrak depot. Indeed, Washington is part history museum, part arts community. . . all charm. It’s easy to see how an artist gets inspired. Washington’s riverfront is picturesque. And the town doesn’t miss the opportunity to connect to the river, with several outdoor cafes and courtyards. Now follow Highway 100 along gorgeous bluffs and peek down ravines at your road’s companion, the Missouri River.
Start in Augusta. If you’re seeking the two basic food groups–beer and wine–Augusta has a bigger supply than any other town with a bike trail next to a river. Indeed, Augusta is wine country. I know, every region south of the Arctic Circle has a wine country. But this one saved the world. It evolved courtesy of the Missouri River, which delivered German settlers to the area during the 1830s, and they instantly recognized the land’s potential. In the 1880s, a phylloxa nematode killed the vines in France. So Missourians sent boxcars of roots from the Norton grape to the French, who grafted their vines onto the disease resistant Norton roots, and we helped save France...the first time. The reward came a century later. On June 20, 1980 Augusta, Missouri—not Napa Valley—was declared the first official American Viticultural Area. This fertile Missouri River wine industry served America until Prohibition dealt the vineyards a blow. Today from Augusta, you

Sure, folks come to Hermann for the wine. I drink the wine, too. But at some point I sneak over to the German School Museum to see what a wedding cake looks like after the bride crashes into it. Wedding cake is slang for steamboat. One look at the photos that fill the museum’s River Room, and you’ll know why. Many photos show steamboat shipwrecks, proud old riverboats that knew their lifetimes were counted in weeks and months when they entered the unforgiving currents and snags of the Missouri River. But enough frivolity. Back to the wine trail.

A beautiful fall foliage drive west along Highway 94 will deliver you to your next destination. It used to be known as the Summit Winery, because itâ€™s located in the bluffs overlooking the Missouri River near Holts Summit. But the winery closed for a short time as it changed hands. And when it reopened, it took a new name: Canterbury Hill, â€œThe Hillâ€? for short. Itâ€™s a great view from this summit, as you sip wine looking over the vineyards that drape the hill, and peek at the state capitol across the river.
Upstream, just up the hill from historic Rocheport, is a winery known for two things: the wine, and the view. Itâ€™s a spectacular view atop the high bluffs overlooking the Missouri River, just a mile or so from the madding crowd on I-70. And the wines match the scenery. But thereâ€™s something else here besides the wine and the view. The entertainment is a hoot. And the food is outstanding. Iâ€™ve tasted fish & chips in Dublin and London. But the best fish & chips I ever tasted was at Les Bourgeois Winery. Iâ€™m not sure why a landlocked winery can fix fish and chips better than a seaside fish house. But itâ€™s true. Part of the charm is the view, and the pastoral setting on a river bluff, watching a gorgeous sunset.

What Is Most Desired in A Vacation Home A Change of Pace and Scenery That’s Not Too Far From Home
hile the residential real estate market has been soft over the past few years, there has been one consistent bright spot: weekend and vacation homes. For instance, in 2011, while owneroccupied home sales dropped by 15.5 percent, sales of vacation homes actually grew by 7%. Important reasons include low finance rates, as well as gains in the stock market and the improving economy, which have made buyers more upbeat about the future. But there is another factor. According to the National Association of Realtors, in 2002 only about 33% of second homes were located within 100 miles of the owner’s primary residence. Today it is over half. Is Snoring Keeping You Awake at Night? It could indicate a serious medical condition.
bout half of all adults have trouble sleeping, and for some it is a chronic problem. Snoring is caused by impaired breathing while sleeping. Light snoring is quite common and may just be an annoyance to your sleep partner.
But if the snorer is also often feeling sleepy during the day, it could be evidence of a potentially life-threatening disorder called obstructive sleep apnea.
WHAT CAUSES OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA
It is caused by repeated collapsing or narrowing of the airway during sleep. Those with this condition can actually stop breathing hundreds of times during the night, and they may not even be aware of the problem. The danger is that it not only results in increased effort to breathe, but can cause oxygen in the blood to drop to an abnormally low level. If left untreated, it can damage internal organs, particularly the cardiovascular system. Sleep apnea has been linked to high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and diabetes.
Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when air can’t flow through the nose and mouth, but breathing efforts of the throat and diaphragm continue uninterrupted. The snoring sound results when air flow forced through the narrowed area causes soft tissue of the airway to vibrate.
DIAGNOSING THE PROBLEM
Sleep apnea is a condition that was discovered as recently as the mid 1960’s, but is believed to affect at least one of every 200 people in this country. It is also one of the most under-diagnosed serious medical conditions. While most prevalent among middle-aged and overweight men, sleep apnea can afflict men or women of any age. Failure to recognize the disorder occurs both among suffers of sleep apnea and, too often, medical professionals as well. And
many of those in whom warning signs are recognized are reluctant to stay in a hospital for sleep testing. However, over the past twenty years, there have emerged a select group of specialist “sleep labs” specifically set up to effectively diagnose and treat sleep disorders. These are quiet, comfortable facilities away from the crowds and overwhelming environments of large hospitals. These centers are able to provide expertise and personal attention to see the process all the way through from testing to effectively implementing solutions to sleep problems.
A LEADING SLEEP SOLUTION HERE
One sleep lab that has been recognized as a leader in sleep disorders is right here in St. Louis County. gist uses specialized equipment to monitor the body during sleep. They measure airflow, respiratory effort, oxygen levels and more to determine the presence of apnea and other disorders. Data is recorded and analyzed by a registered sleep technologist who measures and identifies each sleep stage and flags any abnormalities. Although sleep apnea is the most common disorder, they can also detect other sleep disorders including narcolepsy, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, sleep walking and sleep talking. Results are then reviewed by Dr. Anthony Masi, a physician specializing in sleep medicine, who makes the diagnosis and recommendations for treatment. If sleep apnea is detected, the most commonly recommended treatment is continuous positive airway pressure therapy, or CPAP, which uses a small device to provide pressurized air to prevent apneas. Sleep testing in the laboratory will determine the specific CPAP settings needed, and will allow you to try the therapy before making a final decision. Patients who choose CPAP therapy are given expert follow-through help to insure that the patient receives maximum benefit from the therapy. Should You Lease or Buy Your Next Car?
onventional wisdom used to say if you lease, you’ll have nothing to show
of leasing. Consider the primary advantages and disadvantages of leasing: QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE To help you decide between purchasing and leasing your next car, consider the following questions: 1. Do you need to conserve cash? Usually the only money required when you lease is the first payment and fees associated with registering the vehicle.
ADVANTAGES OF LEASING
1. Lower Monthly Payments. Since you are only paying off the depreciation on the car -- not its full value -- your monthly payments are much lower than if you finance the purchase of the entire car over the same time period. 2. No up-front sales tax. In Missouri this is a substantial expense. Local and state taxes on a new car purchase total 6-8%. 3. Easy turnover. When your lease is up, you just hand over the keys, and drive out with a brand new car and a new lease arrangement. You don’t have to bother with selling the car or haggling over tradein value. 4.Tax advantages for business owners. Leasing a car may offer tax advantages if the vehicle is used for business purposes. 5. Options. At the end of the lease, if the car is worth more than the residual value, you can trade it in and use the equity toward your new car, you can purchase the car and keep it, or sell the car and keep the profit. If the car is worth less than the residual, you can turn it back in and walk away. 6. Equity. On a lease, equity is never a problem at termination. If you have equity-it’s yours(see #5 above), out of equity-turn it back to lender.
1. Lack of Flexibility. Like a 5-year loan, usually you do not have equity on a lease until near the end of term. You can trade prematurely, but it will depend on your credit and equity situation.
2. You May Pay Extra. Most leases charge an extra 10-15 cents for each mile over a certain limit, usually 12,000 to 15,000 miles per year. But the lease can be tailored to whatever your driving habits are, so the miles are built in up front. Also, you’ll have to pay for any damage beyond normal wear and tear when you turn it in. 3. Insurance May Come Up Short. If the car is totaled or stolen, insurance may only reimburse you for the car’s current market value, which might not cover remaining lease payments. Gap coverage is an optional product offered to prevent this from happening.
2. How often do you want a new car? Leasing is attractive for people who want a new car every three years or so. 3. How much do you drive? If you drive substantially above the lease mileage limits, you will have to pay 10-15 cent per mile extra. If you drive substantially less, you may pay for depreciation you won’t use. 4. Do you use your car for business? If you are deducting a portion of your car expense from your taxes, you may be able to deduct substantially more if you lease. 5. Are you concerned about your car’s resale value? If you worry about your car’s resale value, leasing can provide some security. The risk is with the lender, not the driver.
