The Curse of Impulse Buying

T

hey know how to sell us stuff we neither want nor need, but we buy anyway. It’s there, all spread out for us like a garden of delights. The trap is set. We have to pass by it. Or, worse, stand next to it while waiting for our turn.

R A N D O M

M U S I N G S

You probably know I’m talking about check-out lanes at just about any store. The disease they’ve learned to profit from is “impulse buying.” It happens so easily, attracts us so effortlessly.

CLM

8

So, I bought a bag of licorice tidbits at Ace, “soft, chewy, delicious.” They were made in New Zealand or somewhere not usually associated with licorice. Switzer’s I would’ve understood. I ate three pieces in the car, then pitched the bag into the trash can when I got home. I probably should have given them to the gophers and moles in my yard. That would have speeded them along to a soft, chewy death.

Recently I was standing in line at Ace Hardware. I held a 2-pack of halogen light bulbs and a jar of gopher and mole poison pellets, “Guaranteed to rid my yard” of these burrowing creatures. Two people stood in front of me, so I kept my proper social distance. Next to me was an assortment of hard and soft candy in bars and bags, salty snacks, colorful bracelets, action figures with little or no action, small plastic animals, insulated cups…the variety was impressive. Like a mini-Woolworth’s. Remember, this was a hardware store. Nails and screws and pliers I would have understood, but this was far out of the category of hardware. I’ve got to confess here. I am a sucker for temptation, a victim of suggestion, a consumer of the unnecessary. It usually manifests itself with a sudden need for sugar or salt or something crunchy or chewy. Even an occasional gadget that I didn’t realize how badly I needed until I saw it was “New, Tested, Guaranteed, and Essential.” Guaranteed for what, it didn’t say. Those people have my number.

The good people who design floor plans for retail stores most certainly keep a psychiatrist or two on staff. They have read us like a book, know what our weak spots are, and probably have a list of categories with projections of sales and inventory turnover. These are most certainly connected to the type of retail outlet in which they’ve been installed. Ace

Hardware has different customer profiles from Best Buy, which are different from Schnuck’s and Walgreen’s and Bed, Bath and Beyond. Maybe those impulse items are what “Beyond” means. Further, they all seem to feature a wide variety of gum. Ever notice that? Every configuration of gum is displayed in this impulse purgatory. If you need to chew, you’ll find it here. Possibly the most fascinating category for me is the magazines. I have learned things about public figures I never see in the New York Times or Wall Street Journal. Just put me in a slow-moving line at checkout and I’ll be up to date on who’s getting a divorce or has a drug problem or is pregnant or has been messing around. I’m tired of reading about Prince Harry and Meghan and George Clooney and J. Lo and Ben and even Elvis. People I’ve never heard of fascinate me. Usually, young celebrities who have gone viral for some unbelievable reason. It’s really hard not to read this stuff. Maybe that’s part of the reason reality TV shows are so popular. And I would know nothing about them if it weren’t for their accessibility at a vulnerable time. We’ve become a TikTok nation. Impulse purchases are not relegated to just the checkout line, of course. If you go food shopping without a carved-in-stone shopping list, you’re guaranteed to put a few extra items in your cart. Recently I went to get a half-gallon of 2% milk. I got it, along with a half-gallon of Oatmeal milk (“Made with organic oats”) and a half-gallon of chocolate milk (“Omega-3 Supports Brain Health”). That sounded pretty good, but there’s no way I can drink them all before they expire. I will finish the chocolate milk, however.

junk may be full of items that can have a second life. Some may be able to go to a secondhand shop, such as clothes, household items and furniture. Some may be disassembled and used for parts, like a broken bicycle or power tool. And others may be able to be repurposed into something new, like a table made from an old door. As a last resort, items can be recycled – made into something new from the materials, such as a t-shirt made from recycled water bottles.

Uncluttering Life

ne of my favorite fall memories of the last few years was meeting dear friends for a fall bicycle ride on the Katy Trail. It was a beautiful, sunny day – perfect for being outside. We rode to one of the wineries and spent the afternoon on the picnic grounds listening to one of our favorite local music duos – Rogers and Nienhaus. Great friends, great wine and a great time! We have chosen to appreciate the many gifts all around us and our glorious falls offer the simple pleasure of time outdoors enjoying life!

In the many aspects of health and wellness, I find myself focusing on 3 in particular – physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. These are part of a 10-step Healthy Living System™ (https://wellnesswithinyourwalls. com/10-step-approach/) from Wellness Within Your Walls™. As a WWYW Certified Professional, I’ve learned ways to improve our health and wellness in and with our homes as part of this system. For mental and spiritual health – which are closely connected – having space in our home where I can get away and “Zen

out” has been key. To help me achieve this, uncluttering has been a key action. It has not been easy and is an ongoing experience which I continue to learn from. The emotional part of uncluttering is the hardest for me, yet also the most rewarding. The more we unclutter, the freer I feel.

J UNK – DONATE , UPCYCLE , AND RECYCLE So back to our great outdoor experience. To enable us to have our bicycles for this great outdoor experience meant creating easily accessible space for them. And that meant uncluttering space in our garage. We worked hard to organize needed items and then figure out what to do with all the stuff we no longer needed. One persons’ junk may be another’s treasure, yet all too often, we just set our junk out for the trash collection. That

All of these are ways to make our junk serviceable and keep it out of the landfills. There are many resources and organizations to help. JunkLuggers is a company that has offered environmentally friendly junk removal services since 2004, and a locally owned JunkLuggers will begin booking appointments here this fall. They upcycle, recycle, and donate as much as they can, rather than letting unwanted items add to ever-growing landfills. JunkLuggers makes a green guarantee to donate first, recycle second to extend the life of “ junk.” Had we known about JunkLuggers, we would have saved ourselves a lot of research and effort. As it was, we found places to donate and recycle our stuff. It took some work, yet it was worth it to know we weren’t adding to our landfill. I swear I could hear my grandmother’s voice in my head “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without!” (a New England proverb I heard often growing up!)

arble, granite, terrazzo, limestone, travertine and other natural stone are luxurious architectural elements. These quality materials provide refined surfaces for your home, whether in the foyer, living room, kitchen, bathroom or fireplace. But homeowners can diminish the natural beauty of these surfaces by failing to properly maintain them.

Natural stone is a strong and durable material; however, it’s not indestructible. It is still susceptible to stains, spills and damages from everyday occurrences like steady foot traffic and even the use of inappropriate cleaning products. A little pebble caught in a guest’s shoe sole can cause scratches all over the floor. The good news is that when marble and other natural stone surfaces are scratched or stained, they can regain their natural lustrous appearance with professional cleaning, restoration and protection. Whether it’s a marble or granite floor cleaning or shower, vanity or countertop restoration, with

proper care and maintenance, the potential for future damage can be minimized. Regardless of what problems you may encounter with your stone surfaces, there is a solution. Scratches, dull spots and etches caused by chemicals and sharp objects can be honed and polished to their original shine. Amazingly, even cracked or chipped areas can be color matched to blend perfectly into the existing floor. Because most problems are repairable, properly maintaining natural stone costs substantially less than replacing it. A common part of the restoration process is repairing, cleaning and sealing grout,

BEFORE

restoring it to its original color while also providing superior spill resistance. It’s essential to use the proper application of stone cleaner and sealer to prevent or reduce future damage. True stone craftsmen have the expertise and experience to restore the appearance of your natural stone surfaces, and can provide valuable advice for keeping them as beautiful as the day they were installed. They will work with you to determine the cause of damage and devise a plan to avoid a recurrence. A local stone professional can advise on the maintenance procedures that are suitable for your specific surfaces. They can help extend the life of your stone’s finish for years and regain the elegant appearance you love. Also, ask if they can also provide you with products that are safe for everyday use in cleaning stone surfaces. To contact a company that specializes in natural stone restoration, maintenance and cleaning, you can call the professionals at MARBLELIFE at 888-254-9488 , or visit online at www.marblelife-stlouis.com.

As the head of Studio X, a branding and marketing agency nestled in the heart of downtown Maplewood, Michael juggles photography shoots, graphic design projects, and client meetings. But he can cross off his energy supply as a source of worry, because Michael and Studio X have been powered by solar energy for the last two years.

“This is what the future is”, said Kilfoy, speaking about his rooftop solar array. Eighteen black solar modules cover the roof and generate over 75% of his energy needs throughout the year. He expects the system to pay for itself in 7 years. “After that, it is all free energy”, he explained. With the federal renewable ener-

And it’s good to do”, he said. “Technology is going this way and it is just the right thing to do right now. We are helping change things for the better.” To learn how your home or business can save energy costs and add value, you can contact StraightUp Solar at 314-310-7614 and ask for a free customized solar assessment.

The Newer, Better Way to Make and Keep Garage and Basement Floors Attractive

I

f you are tired of your old, gross concrete garage or basement floor, you should know about the new generation of attractive coatings that go right over your concrete to give you a fresh, attractive shiny surface that stays looking great because it is much easier to maintain than a dull concrete surface.

You have probably heard of and seen epoxy coatings, but may not be familiar with a newer product called polyaspartic. It is similar in appearance, but there are advantages of the newer material, which until now has been used primarily in commercial settings. Polyaspartic coatings were first devel-

oped for steel bridges for their corrosion-resistant properties. In addition to greater strength, two advantages of polyaspartic concrete coatings are their quick drying time and nearly odorless emissions after application. These innovations make them more versatile than traditional epoxy. The coating has a clear, glossy finish and decorative color chips are added for a bolder look and traction materials are added for a non-slip texture. Unlike epoxy, polyaspartic is always formulated to be colorfast, so the color won’t fade or yellow, even after extended exposure to UV rays. That means your garage will keep looking great longer.

Polyaspartic coatings can be applied in a variety of weather and temperature conditions, so you won’t need to wait. They cure within 30 minutes to an hour vs. about 16 hours for epoxy, so you can more quickly get back to your life. Polyaspartic dries hard, but maintains some flexibility, which helps keep a stain, abrasion, chip and scratch-resistant finish. It is also chemical, mold, mildew and salt resistant. Archway Industrial Coatings, Inc. is a St. Louis-based company with many years of experience in quality concrete coatings, both commercial and residential. They are leaders in polyaspartic flooring solutions that withstand the test of time, while meeting their customers’ installation schedules and budgets. Archway is committed to doing the highest quality work at the lowest cost. Their installers are employed directly by Archway, the highly trained “Dream Team” craftsmen who know the difference between a job and a job well done. They are accredited by the Better Business Bureau. You can now take advantage of their Fall Discounts. THE SMART CHOICE FOR UPDATING YOUR KITCHEN

Consider Refacing Instead of Replacing

I

f you’re looking for a fresh new look for your kitchen, you may not need to go to the expense and mess of tearing out and replacing your old cabinets. If they are structurally sound, you can get a completely new look in a much less time and at a fraction of the cost by refacing all visible surfaces of the cabinets instead of building new ones.

PLENTY OF OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM You will have literally hundreds of door styles and colors to choose from, and many options to explore. A few of the most popular options include crown molding, pull out storage in the base cabinets, glass door fronts, and under-

HOW IT WORKS

cabinet dimmable LED lighting. Ask about the build-up option that allows us to add to the top of your cabinet to make a standard 30” cabinet into a 42” tall wall cabinet. Custom counter tops and tile backsplash combine to offer a complete package. A totally new and updated kitchen. ADVANTAGES OF REFACING Cabinet refacing provides a neat, clean installation, and is usually less than half the cost of a total tear out remodel. In most cases the cabinets can be refaced, counter top replaced, and a new backsplash installed in one week. Many of us have friends that have had total tear out remodels. Ask them how long it took for the remodel. Then ask the cost. Classic Kitchen Refacing LLC has been the St. Louis area’s leader in cabinet refacing for years. They can help you make all the decisions in design and selection of coordinating countertops and hardware to give your kitchen a completely new look. You can call them for a free in-home estimate at 314-470-5010.

In refacing, doors are replaced and all exposed surface are covered with matching ¼ inch hardwood or panels. Additional cabinets can be added. With all new doors, new soft close hinges and all new handles or knobs, your kitchen will be completely updated.

WHAT CAUSES SETTLEMENT?

Settlement is the movement your home experiences when changes in the soil below cause it to no longer be able to support the weight of your home, or parts of it. This can be soil that is drying and shrinking, usually after long droughts; soil that remains wet and softens, usually from heavy rain or flooding where there is poor drainage; or compression of poorly compacted fill soil, often where new building lots are developed.

Even if you haven’t seen changes in your home recently, more settlement may occur. Continuing wet and dry cycles can cause soil changes, and settlement is not over unless steps are taken to fix the problem. SOLUTIONS THAT WORK

The most effective way to fix a settling home is to pier it. Steel push piers are driven deep to bedrock or a stable soil layer. They can be installed inside or outside your home to

lift it back to its original position, closing cracks and improving the operation of doors and windows. The solution is quick, and the problem is solved. On lighter structures such as stoops or decks, a helical pier or screw pile may be more effective because the structure may not be heavy enough to drive push piers to a sufficient depth. If you see cracks in walls or floors, inside or out, or doors or windows that don’t close as they should, don’t delay doing something about it. These signs of settlement may get worse if you ignore them. You can call Woods Basement Systems, the highest-rated, most reviewed contractor in their industry, for a free inspection. CABINETRY The next garage storage consideration is cabinetry. Garage storage cabinets are the most secure and accessible solution for a crowded garage. They eliminate clutter and help to convert a messy garage into an attractive and useable space. Garage cabinets can be used to store lawn and garden supplies, tools, sports equipment, workbenches, trashcans, even golf bags.

Storage Solutions for a Functional, Attractive Garage

TRANSFORM THE MOST CLUTTERED ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE

SOLVING THE GARAGE PROBLEM he garage is the most cluttered and messy room in most homes. Now more than just a place to park vehicles, it carries all the overflow of stuff from the rest of the house. In effect, the garage has become a large disorganized and overstuffed cabinet. And because most garages are not really designed as storage space, it is inevitable that they become quite cluttered, crowded and disorderly. Fortunately, with garage organization planning and the help of some clever storage solutions, your garage clutter problem can be readily solved. You can have custom systems in your garage to utilize walls, ceiling and floor to maximize usable space and order.

20

OVERHEAD STORAGE

CLM

H O M E

T

One very practical solution is overhead garage storage. The lofts or overhead racks usually are lightweight but heavy-duty metal frame that can carry

moderate loads and bulky items. They are suspended from the ceiling, which has clear advantages. By freeing up the garage floor from clutter, you have space for more easily parking cars, a work or hobby area and heavier items that should be stored on the floor. Another advantage of overhead storage is easy accessibility. Seldom used or seasonal items like holiday décor are stored overhead out of the way and easily reached when you need them. Overhead garage compartments also keep potentially hazardous items out of children's reach. And now you can access your garage storage with a touch of a button. New overhead racks utilize Bluetooth motors that smoothly lift and lower your items through an app on your smartphone. There's no longer a need to get out a ladder to grab heavy items stored up top.

Common household chemicals and other hazardous substances can also be safely stored in secure cabinets. The proper cabinets can also protect workshop tools and supplies from moisture and dust. Lockable garage cabinets can keep dangerous items away from children. It will also protect your personal belongings when you leave your garage open. ATTRACTIVE GARAGE FLOOR OPTIONS And once everything is up off the floor, so you can actually see it, consider a more attractive floor than oil and paint-stained concrete. Epoxy floors have the look of granite, are durable and resist oil and other stains. Flooring tiles are available in a variety of colors and textures and can be used to create custom patterns. CALL THE PROFESSIONALS Like a custom kitchen or bath, there are advantages of complete garage storage and flooring designed and installed by professionals. he finest advanced digital technology enables us to provide dental restorations crowns, inlays, veneers, and bridges - that are more attractive, accurate, comfortable and long-lasting. And to be able to do it all in one visit to our office.

This revolution covers all phases of dental restorations: modeling the restoration, designing, manufacturing, and cementing it in place.

After the software proposes the restoration, I customize and approve the design for manufacturing your restoration.

Traditionally, to make the models used for molding crowns, inlays and other tooth restorations required the time-consuming process of taking a physical impression. This was done by inserting a tray full of gooey impression material into your mouth and waiting 5 minutes and carefully removing it without pulling other dental work with it. The mold then needed to be disinfected, packed and shipped to a dental lab.

Now we make digital models with the CEREC Primescan, a wand about the size of an electric toothbrush that glides comfortably over your teeth, capturing continuous three-dimensional video images and actually modeling them on a screen in real time. Unlike previous digital scanners, no spray powder is required to get an accurate digital model. In a matter of minutes, I can view, rotate or enlarge a very precise image of your teeth in fine detail. In previous scanning and milling systems one company made the scanner, another made the manufacturing equipment and a third made the software that connected the system together. There were frequent issues in getting the three companies’ systems to work together. CEREC represents a huge step forward because they provide the scanner, the milling and finishing equipment as well as the software that seamlessly connects it all together. MANUFACTURING IN OUR OFFICE This is where the system is really revolutionary. Instead of the time and expense of packing and shipping a model, or even transmitting images, to a lab where the crown, inlay or other restoration is manufactured, the digital images are immediately transmitted directly to a countertop milling unit right in our office. Good Hearing: The Right Instruments and Service Make the Difference BY TODD AB R AMS

M H E A LT H

&

F I T N E S S

y previous article, in the Summer issue, was about the experience of having a comprehensive hearing test at a Miracle-Ear clinic earlier this year. The results of the test were documented for me, showing that I had mild to moderate hearing loss at higher frequencies in both ears – the frequencies of most spoken conversation.

CLM

24

This was the right time to correct my hearing since this is when the most correction options and potential savings are available. And, by correcting hearing at this stage of loss, there is a chance of avoiding auditory deprivation, where the brain loses the ability to distinguish certain sounds because it has forgotten them. I also have had tinnitus for several years, a constant background sound caused by cochlear damage that sends false signals to the brain. I learned that hearing correction, by stimulating nerves appropriately, can reduce or eliminate tinnitus. There are basically two types of hearing instruments – behind the ear and in the ear. Behind the ear models have a barely visible wire that carries sounds to a tiny speaker in the ear. A key advantage is that they can be rechargeable so that you don’t have to buy and replace batteries. They also are more adapt-

able as your hearing changes over time. Advantages of in the ear models are that they really are invisible and can interfere less if you are wearing glasses or a mask. Both types of hearing instruments can be adjusted to different environments with a smart phone app. There is a range of instrument offerings for both behind-the-ear and in-the-ear models for various hearing needs and budget considerations. But one very important thing I learned about hearing correction is that at clinics like Miracle-Ear, hearing correction is not just a product, but is full range of thoughtful, caring services that begin with preparing, testing and analysis of hearing deficiencies that enable the auditory experts to prescribe the correct instruments and tune them precisely to your needs. I opted for the in-the-ear model hearing instruments shown on this page, called the ReadyFitTM. They are so small that you can’t see them in the close-up photo of me with them in my ears. The only thing visible is the tiny clear bead that is used to pull them out.

I couldn’t imagine that these tiny instruments could make a difference. But they are fully programmable, and what a difference they make. Conversation, the main thing I was missing, is much crisper, and I notice that I can hear what people are saying from the back seat when riding in the car, and in other situations where I am not sitting faceto-face with those who are speaking. The adjustments I can make on my iPhone control volume, tone and to allow conversation to be more easily heard in noisy environments. There is a setting for TV or other electronics that adapts to those sounds. I have never had a whistling, buzzing or static sound as I remember hearing from others in the past who were wearing hearing aids. And unlimited, personalized service is always available to optimize performance as I use the hearing instruments. The auditory professionals at any Miracle-Ear clinic answer questions, make adjustments, clean and fine-tune at no additional charge, to adapt to hearing needs as they become more evident or change over time. The net result is that my hearing in conversations and in watching television has improved markedly. I don’t have to keep asking what was said or to turn up the volume, and others aren’t asking me to turn it down. The more I wear them the better they work, as my brain adapts to the change. I am so glad I made the move when I did!

If you would like a free, no-obligation hearing test, you can schedule a thorough examination at any one of the 13 locally owned Miracle-Ear clinics in the St. Louis metro area. Just call 314-789-5202

f you or someone you know has gone through the process of choosing care options for a loved one, you know how bewildering and time-consuming these very consequential decisions can be: Is the need temporary, or long-term? Is it best to stay in the home they know and love with home care support, or move to a facility providing around-the-clock care? How do you know which senior living community is best for your family member? What are options for paying for care? PROFESSIONAL CARE MANAGEMENT is a holistic, client-centered approach

to caring for older adults, disabled, or mentally ill persons. The goal is to put safety and security first while improving the client’s quality of life and reducing family stress through planning and problem-solving, ed-

ucation and advocacy, and family caregiver coaching. CARE MANAGERS assist in actively con-

sidering, evaluating and monitoring these options, as well as assisting with medical care. They identify programs and services to engage clients and provide social interaction. They consult with elder or disability attorneys, accountants or Power of Attorney and review bill paying. And they can source and manage entitlements – Federal, state and local programs to provide financial assistance. A CARE PLAN tailored for each indi-

vidual’s circumstances is prepared after a comprehensive assessment. Local, cost-effective resources are identified and engaged as needed. The plan may be modified, in consultation with client and family, as circumstances change.

here are important reasons why people want to start an exercise and nutrition program. To lose weight, get strong and healthy, look and be their best for an upcoming event, or to simply be a positive role model for their family. These reasons take on personal importance that is unique to each individual.

What is not unique, however, are the three major barriers to success that my clients faced when they tried to reach these goals on their own. These issues are exactly why they turned to me to achieve the success you see in the examples on this page, and why you may consider doing the same if you are having a hard time reaching your health and fitness goals: NOT KNOWING HOW TO PUT A COMPLETE PROGRAM TOGETHER. A com-

prehensive health and fitness program should consist of all the following with the proper amounts/ratios related to your specific goals: Nutrition, Supplementation, Resistance Training, Cardiovascular Exercise, Flexibility or Mobility Work and Proper Rest. If this seems a little overwhelming, you’re not alone.

NOT HAVING A WORKABLE PLAN OF ACTION. You can try the latest and greatest

diet and exercise program known to man, but if it doesn’t fit into your schedule or physical capabilities, as well as integrate all the components listed above, then you’re simply wasting your time. A health and fitness plan must be “doable” for the individual - otherwise it is useless. NOT HAVING A PROPER SUPPORT SYSTEM IN PLACE. Making changes in

your routine necessary for achieving specific health and fitness goals can be extremely challenging. It’s inevitable that you will come up against frustrations, uncertainties and questions along the way. Having someone there to guide, motivate, educate, support and hold you accountable to what you have committed to do for yourself will prove to be one of the best ways to reach your goals. If you are struggling with one or all of these problems on your path to improved health and fitness, then I would recommend not to waste another single day. I have helped dozens of clients achieve their goals and I can help you as well!

Can You Really Improve Your Bone Health?

T

he skeletal system is the foundation for your body and provides more than just strength and protection. We tend to think of adult bones as fixed, rigid structures that don’t change much before they begin to deteriorate as we get older. But the truth is that like the rest of our bodies, the skeleton is constantly replacing itself, and over several years it is replaced completely.

Old bone is broken down by cells called osteoclasts and replaced by bone-building cells known as osteoblasts. But when we hit middle age this renewal process slows down, so our bones get thinner, which is how osteoporosis can set in. But many people in St. Louis, across the US and around the world are benefiting from the discovery that a targeted weekly stimulus can actually trigger growth of healthy new bone tissue. The required resistance is difficult for most people to achieve

HERE IS WHAT MEMBERS OF OSTEOSTRONG RIGHT HERE IN ST. LOUIS HAVE TO SAY:

“Before I joined OsteoStrong I was having terrible leg and hip pain. I struggled to do any type of daily activity without being in pain. By the end of most days, I had such severe leg pain it was difficult to fall asleep. I would often wake up through the night with more pain and leg cramps. My doctor ran blood tests and evaluated my pain, but couldn’t offer any answer and she suggested vitamins. I saw an advertisement for OsteoStrong and immediately called for their free trial offer. What was I to lose since it was free? My pain! I got my legs and my life back! I felt relief after my first visit! I have been going for five weeks and it has made such a difference in my life. My body feels stronger, I have more energy, my balance as improved, and I love going each week because the trainers and other clients are so friendly and supportive! Can’t wait to see how my body feels after another five weeks!" CATHY

"I have been going to OsteoStrong for over a year . I am feeling improvement in general health already. The two important markers I have noticed are in my bone density scan result and in my HbA1C (blood sugar). The bone density numbers have come out to be well outside the ‘panic’ range and my A1C has kept going down from 6.4 to 6.1 and just recently to 5.9. Thank you. I hope to keep on going like this as long as I can." RON “Before OsteoStrong, I had to go up stairs one step at a time because of the weakness in my legs - I now can walk upstairs in a normal way! I also notice that I can stand in the middle of the room and put on my slacks without leaning on something or sitting down. The staff at OsteoStrong are very friendly, make me feel confident and are always complimentary. Overall, I've seen a great improvement in my strength and it's also easier to stand up out of a chair." MARY

with just regular exercise. But for nearly five years St. Louisans have taken advantage of specialized centers here that make it easy, safe and without pain to achieve forces at this level and beyond for nearly all ages and fitness levels. The proprietary Spectrum System is offered exclusively at OsteoStrong, with 10 facilities servicing the St. Louis and St. Charles area. Sessions are once a week and take less than 15 minutes. Many members of OsteoStrong experience improved bone density, posture, balance and athletic ability. Also, less joint and back pain, helping them feel more confident in their daily life. The most compelling evidence is what OsteoStrong members themselves have to say about their experience!

"I am 77 years of age, and for the last 3 years, due to various health issues I have lost a lot of muscle strength. I was reluctant to try OsteoStrong but so glad I did! I have noticed that I'm able to do some of the things I couldn't before - for example lifting my heavy standup mixer from the bottom of the cabinet to the top of my counter! My balance is much better, and I definitely feel stronger - which is exactly what I was hoping for!" SHIR LE Y

lmost everyone suffers from hemorrhoids at some time in their lives. Hemorrhoids are normal “cushions” of tissue filled with blood vessels at the end of the rectum. If enlarged, they can cause unpleasant symptoms. If left untreated, surgery may be required, which can be painful and require days to weeks of recovery.

Treatment options depend on the size of the hemorrhoids and severity of symptoms. Topical medications can relieve itching and shrink mild hemorrhoids. But for enlarged or bleeding hemorrhoids, options for longer-term relief have been limited to sclerotherapy, involving injections similar to those for varicose veins, rubber band ligation, stapling and surgery. Each of these can have varying

results, cause days of discomfort and possibly cause complications, some of which are severe. But another option is available, an outpatient procedure called infrared coagulation (IRC). It provides long-term relief and is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure that many studies have shown to be the optimal non-operative treatment of choice. It is fast, effective, well tolerated and has fewer complications than other options. The IRC treatment focuses infrared light on hemorrhoidal tissues. This coagulates blood vessels, causing the hemorrhoid to shrink and retract. The IRC procedure does not require anesthesia or special preparation. Patients may feel a slight warm sensation, but it usually is painless, and most patients return to work the same day. IRC received FDA clearance in 1984 and is covered by most insurance plans.

Breathe Easier Using Salt Room Therapy

W

hen Clay Juracsik started The St. Louis Salt Room over 10 years ago, it was partially as a therapy for his daughter. She had severe asthma and he saw that it was taking a toll on her health. He was looking for something that could help her and make her less dependent on the drugs she needed to take. Clay had studied halotheraphy and learned of its many benefits, and even traveled to Europe and Russia to visit other salt spas to learn everything he could about them.

Her breathing improved quickly and after several months found that she was able to cut the need for her meds by 90%. “Halotherapy has made her lungs much healthier. It made a huge difference. It made me more of a believer than I already was,” Clay said. “She hasn't needed medication in a long time.” A HISTORY OF BENEFIT

Halotherapy chambers have been popular in Europe and are now seeing popularity in the United States. Salt has been used for

thousands of years to treat a long list of common ailments.

It was discovered in the mid-1800s that people who worked in the salt mines of Poland and surrounding countries had a remarkably low rate of respiratory illnesses. Soon a clinic was placed within one of these salt mines, which is still in operation today. In order to simulate the therapeutic effects within salt mines, spas emulating salt caves were built on the surface, where people would visit routinely to breathe the air which was saturated with beneficial salt particles and negatively-charged ions. Recently, engineers created a device called a Halo-generator, which not only simulates the conditions in salt mines, but accelerates the effect. A salt aerosol fills the air with tiny particles, which have been clinically proven to deliver the most optimal results. FOR ADULTS & CHILDREN

Halotherapy is beneficial to people of all ages, and actually children often experience the

greatest results. Salt Therapy is recommended for those who suffer from respiratory ailments like Asthma, Bronchitis, Sinusitis, and even allergies. Many people use it to lower their stress and relieve fatigue and depression. Athletes use it to optimize their breathing and improve circulation. ST. LOUIS’ FIRST SALT SPA

The St. Louis Salt Room was the first Salt Spa in the Midwest (fifth the in the U.S.) and has many regular clients, including some doctors, nurses and other medical personnel. Trichotillomania is a disorder that involves recurrent, irresistible urges to pull out your hair. BY J OAN K R U EG E R , CE R TI FI E D HYPNOTHERAPIST

The urges involve pulling out hair from the scalp, eyebrows, or other areas of the body. This is actually more common than people would expect. And it can manifest in each person in a different way. Some people pull just the hair on their head. Other people will pull eyelashes. Some people pull eyelashes and eyebrows. Some people will pull all of the above. I saw a girl who was in her 30s that would pull the hair from her head. She would pull from different spots, so she always wore her hair in a high ponytail to disguise the bald spots on her head.

During her session, we talked about the fact that she was always pulling her hair at an unconscious level. She would realize that she was pulling her hair after she had already started pulling it. Her subconscious mind was controlling her movements. When you’re in a state of hypnosis, it is possible to change a behavior to a different behavior, at a subconscious level. If your mind can cause you to pull your hair without thinking about it, it can also keep your body from producing that movement. Or it can make you aware of the movement of your hands so you can stop yourself before you start to pull. With some suggestions that every time either one of her hands would move toward her hair, for the purpose of pulling, her subconscious mind would immediately cause her to become aware of that movement. Not only would she become aware but that she would have the ability to stop that movement and do something else with her hands. She called me several months later and told me that she had not pulled her hair since she left my office. Before her session, she did not know that she could ever be free and yet she was. When you conquer something that has been an issue for you for as long as you remember, it can be life changing. Your self-confidence increases, you feel empowered, and you realize that you can create a change that you want to create. The ability lies within you. Let me help you find it.

manage the Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center in Kirkwood, MO. It is extremely important to us to be good stewards of our natural resources, and to educate others to do the same. Wise use is a consistent theme throughout the exhibits as well as how individuals can help in their own back yards.

I met Chris Siewing of Nature’s ReCreations back in 2011 when we were looking for options to repair and upgrade the water source in our wildlife viewing area. We had a small, block style waterfall that was failing and was no longer repairable. We were adding water daily and decided replacement was the best option. Chris listened carefully to our ideas and never “told” us what we wanted. He was honest about what would work and said he could deliver our vision. After visiting some of his work sites, I was convinced. A very generous donation made it possible for the nature center to pursue the work. Nature’s Re-Creations was selected for

hen planted in the fall, trees and shrubs push their energy into their root systems, which will continue to grow over the winter. This produces brighter, healthier growth above ground in the spring. Here are some terrific options for adding to the health and appearance of your yard.

TREES When planning where to put trees, consider available moisture in the soil, as well as sun and shade conditions. Evergreens and conifers like dry conditions, while river birch, black gum and paw paw trees need more moisture. Evergreens, including pines and

Bayberry is an evergreen that bears white berries in the fall. Winterberry holly is a deciduous shrub that loses its leaves in the fall, then produces bright red berries retained until Christmas. The leaves on autumn brilliance serviceberry turn a bright sunset orange in the fall.

If you want to attract butterflies, some trees are a big draw. The paw paw is the host plant for the zebra swallowtail butterfly caterpillar. Tiger swallowtail butterfly hosts are cherry trees and wafer ash. FLOWERING AND BERRY-BEARING SHRUBS Shrubs provide nice color for your yard. The pinky winky hydrangea gets 4 to 5 feet

won’t continue. But that requires large holes in the concrete - about the diameter of a soda can. It can take an entire day to cure and the mixture itself is heavy – about 100 pounds per cubic foot, which can lead to further sinking. There is now a great alternative called PolyLEVEL™, which uses a lightweight polyurethane mix that expands to fill the void beneath sunken concrete. This not only results in a solution that lasts longer, but also it looks better because it is less destructive to the applied surface. PolyLEVEL requires a much smaller hole – about the diameter of a penny, cures in 15 minutes and weighs much less – about two

pounds per cubic foot. It lifts concrete slabs to a level position with less weight and disruption than the legacy mud jacking or slab jacking process. The result is a safe, secure and level concrete slab. In the St. Louis area, Woods Basement Systems is the authorized contractor for PolyLEVEL concrete lifting. They will inspect your concrete walk, steps, pool deck, patio or driveway and provide an estimate to have your sunken concrete slab lifted with PolyLEVEL. Enhanced Outdoor Living for Your Home

CLM

S

ome people define their quality of life by how much time they are able to spend outdoors. It’s relaxing and refreshing to commune with nature in the fresh air right in the comfort of your own back yard. And with most of us spending more time at home than ever these days, enhanced outdoor living options make an enjoyable “stay-cation” possible. While our climate doesn’t allow us to spend time outdoors every day of the year, there are ways to extend our outdoor enjoyment to eight months a year, and add those days in winter when there is a break in the weather. Covered outdoor living rooms can be enjoyed in the rain, and with shade and a ceiling fan they make hot days comfortable. A fireplace in an outdoor living room or firepit outdoors makes cooler days enjoyable. Lighting, TV, surround sound, directional fans, as well as power screens, and built-in heaters allow for use of the cozy spaces, day or night.

And, of course, outdoor living wouldn’t be complete without great food and refreshing drink. Outdoor kitchens feature gas grills, smokers or pizza ovens, and beverages in refrigeration or on tap. All surrounded by comfortable gathering areas to entertain friends and family.

The best outdoor living spaces work structurally and aesthetically with the existing home. Factors like exposure to sun and weather have to be evaluated in the layout and design, to be fully usable and enjoyable. There needs to be a natural flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, and privacy. But what really makes for the best in outdoor living is the quality of design, building materials and construction. These provide durable spaces that stand up to a lot of everyday use, are timelessly inviting and will last for decades. This work calls for skilled masonry craftsmen and carpenters who create with solid natural materials like stone, brick and wood. One company in the St. Louis area that specializes in extraordinary outdoor living spaces and continues the great masonry tradition that St. Louis is historically known for is Luna Builds StL. They are a St. Louis owned and operated design-build company, working in a turnkey approach with homeowners to provide innovative design and construction. Let Luna Builds StL handle the entire process with their in-house craftsmen and management team, and trusted partners and suppliers. To create your own outdoor quality of life and priceless memories at home, you can call Dan Head, hands-on owner of Luna Builds, at 314-575-2791 or email at danhead@lunabuildstl. com. Celebrating

native grape still in commercial use and Missouri's official state grape, produces the state's signature medium-to full-bodied dry red wines. In fact, Augusta, MO was the first American Viticulture Area (AVA) in the U.S. An AVA is a geographical area defined by the geography, soils and climate that influence the grapes and the wine.

WINEMAKING IN MISSOURI

I

n this bicentennial year of Missouri’s statehood in 1821, County Living is celebrating an important part of the state’s history: our vineyards and wineries. Winemaking is more than an important Missouri industry, it is part of our culture, a product of our heritage, climate, and the distinctive topography of Missouri. The beauty of vineyards and historic nature of winemaking also attract visitor interest, and so they are a key driver of tourism, especially in this fall season.

A STORIED HISTORY Winemaking in Missouri began with French settlers in the area around Ste. Geneviève, and greatly advanced around 1821 with large numbers of immigrants to the new state from Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy. By the late 1800s, Missouri produced as much wine as any other state in the nation. One well-known distinction of Missouri’s vineyards was their role in the revival of the French wine industry. In the 1870s, a root-destroying pest wiped out most

of the vineyards in France. A Missouri entomologist, C.V. Riley, in collaboration with George Husmann and Hermann Jaeger, discovered a pest-resistant Missouri rootstock that was sent to France and successfully grafted with French vines, which began to grow sturdier, restoring French winemaking. Husmann was a grape grower and winemaker in Hermann, MO and Jaeger was a grape grower and grape breeder in Neosho, MO. One of Hermann’s creations was Jaeger 70 which is still used in grape breeding today. Husmann is considered the father of the Missouri grape and wine industry as well as one of the fathers of the California grape and wine industry. He was also the first professor of pomology and forestry at the University of Missouri in 1879.

A LEADING WINE STATE Missouri currently ranks tenth in the U.S. in wine production, selling 1.6 million gallons annually, and is home to about 130 wineries. Missouri has a longer history of growing grapes and winning awards than Napa Valley. Norton, America's oldest

LOST CREEK VINEYARD

But the wine industry in Missouri isn’t sitting on its laurels or on its world-class rootstocks. According to Dr. Dean Volenberg, Viticulture and Winery Operations Extension Specialist at the University of Missouri Grape and Wine Institute, “We offer extension outreach to the Missouri wine and grape industry in viticulture (grape growing) and enology (wine making). Collaborating with the Missouri Wine and Grape Board Technical Committee, we assess grape varieties and advanced grape breeder selections that may have potential in Missouri, as well as survey and assess potential pest threats. Currently we are evaluating the potential of 40 cultivars, or advanced breeder selections, for future introductions into Missouri vineyards.” There are seven wine regions in Missouri. We are highlighting wineries in the three regions in the east-central part of the state, close to us in in the St. Louis metro area. The Augusta, Hermann and Ozark Highlands regions are all official AVA’s, and all distinct wine-producing regions. Be sure to visit these featured wineries and enjoy their great wines and hospitality! Cheers!

Memory Dividends

If the most valuable thing you have are happy memories, you have led a rich life. –Matshona Dhliwayo A recent topic with the four men I have met with monthly for over 20 years is memory dividends. A memory dividend is a return on investment you get from the creation of memories. Every time you are reminded

More specifically, we discussed memory dividends created by having a place on the water, in the mountains or in the country. I like to refer to them as kid and grandkid magnets. A byproduct of these types of investments is financial - when bought and maintained prudently they provide nice appreciation and a lot more memory usefulness than a larger retirement account. We all have our own best memories, and while the list is unlimited some of my personal favorites include these: HUNTING - at

the top of my list is deer camp. But there is much more. A great multigenerational family hunt is mushrooms. For kids it is like an Easter egg hunt with other things that cause childlike wonderment like shed antlers, turtle shells, unique rocks and more. GOLF - I am not a golfer but many of my

friends who love the game especially like family/friend annual trips to their family getaways. Better yet to mix in other activities like fishing and visiting local wineries and attractions. BONFIRES, MARSHMALLOWS AND STAR GAZING - these activities just

aren’t the same in your backyard. It is 8:30 when you start the fire and the next thing you know it is 1:30 in the morning and with more than a glow of the fire if you know what I am talking about.

Something to consider is to make a conscious commitment to allocate your time and resources to creating lasting memories. Block out your calendar a year in advance. Share with spouse, family and friends, get them engaged and have them block out their calendars also. If you can afford a place in the country, by the water or in the mountains choose a professional real estate agent in the lifestyle property you are wanting. 1

That was an epiphany point in my life as a new dad. I made a decision to cut back my hours and take an income cut. Two things happened as a result. I cut my client list by 75% to just the most important ones; the next year my work hours went down to 35 a week and my income doubled. The second thing is, ever since then I have succeeded in achieving life balance. One of the best outcomes of life balance is the memories I have and continue to create with family and friends at our farm, lake property, on vacations and hunting trips.

The attractive young waitress at a restaurant in The Grove welcomed us with a warm smile, handed us menus and took our drink orders. But my eyes were not on the menu nor her smile. I was looking at her left arm, between her shoulder and elbow. There, in bold lines and colors, rested a large tattoo featuring a flower and a cat’s head. When I asked her about the cat - “It was mine.” she showed me two more tattoos, equally artistic. Whatever your opinion may be about tattoos (aka “tatts”), be assured they are here to stay. with wider acceptance. The art of tattoos, and the demand for them, has come a long way in recent years. Even mothers, who might have warned their kids “you better not get a tattoo” are getting inked now. The younger generation in particular has embraced them, but many new customers are middle-aged or older. So here is the dilemma I faced. Which artist do I talk to for this article? How many? Which parlors? St.Louis has at least twenty tattoo studios and dozens of talented artists with a wide range of experience, styles and specialities. The names of the parlors intrigued me: Self-Inflicted, Enigma, Iron Age, AllStar, Threshold, Art Monster, Alchemy, to name a few. When in doubt, Google. I decided on two: Nate Strautkalns of AllStar Tattoo in University City (he’s co-owner) and Trader Bob’s on South

Jefferson in St. Louis; and Brandie Medina of Steel and Ink Studio in South County. One of the oldest continually operating tattoo shops in the U.S., Trader Bob’s opened in the 1930’s. It’s a part of local and national history. Nate has a commanding presence and passion, which became evident as he talked about his journey to tattoos and St. Louis. He’s 51 and has been tattooing for over 30 years. “I was born in 1970 in south Minneapolis. I was an average student, didn’t go to college, had a chaotic childhood, and realized I wasn’t cut out for a straight job.” He was into street art, album covers, graffiti. Gradually he discovered he had a natural talent for art, met someone who showed him some basics in tattooing, and began developing his technique. In 1998 he moved to St. Louis, where he met Brad Fink, an

established artist who offered him the chance to work in his shop. “St. Louis has a good feeling about it,” he adds. While most artists are men, that has been changing over the past few years as more women enter the business. One of them is Brandie Medina, a dynamic young woman who runs Steel and Ink Studio on Lemay Ferry Road in South County.

shops were located near the docks. From there it was just a short hop to the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lawrence, the NBA and every other major sport. Even President Theodore Roosevelt and Lady Churchill (Winston’s mother) had tattoos. Today there are an estimated 21,000 tattoo parlors in the United States.

“I feel like there’s a higher thought process,” She is a combination of energy and enthusays Brandie. “People want to express themsiasm with a widespread knowledge of the selves with a tattoo. It’s a form of medicine business. But it didn’t come easy. “I was to me.” She talks about recent customers born in St. Louis, but grew up in California, who want to memorialize a person or an all over the state. I learned to pierce in San event, a loss to Covid, a marriage or birth. Francisco, then moved into tattoos.” “People feel the need to honor the person or After she had her fourth child, she moved event.” to St. Louis and worked as a nurse at St. I asked Nate about his process with a Anthony’s Hospital. Finding a place for a customer. “I make them comfortable, start tattoo shop in St. Louis County wasn’t easy. a discussion about the tattoo and its placeThere was resistance, but she knew how to ment and the meaning behind it,” he says. “I get things done. “I’m what you’d call a free want them to have confidence in me. It’s like spirit. My grandpa was a beatnik.” That a surgeon.” explains a lot. She opened Steel and Ink Studio in 2009, which created a conflict. Tattooing was illegal in South County then, a dated preconception of the booming industry it has become. “I had to petition for a conditional use permit, attend a whole bunch of meetings, and when the Council rejected my application - after I had built the studio - I appealed. They passed it.”

Are there any boundaries you won’t cross? I asked him. “I won’t do something hateful, or something on a young person he or she may regret later. I’m trying to think ahead for them.” Nate says he loves doing flowers, colorful subjects. “The culture has changed. The art has gotten better. People have access to all these resources and information.”

So why do people get tattoos? Here is what some of them say. She now has approximately ten artists with a variety of backgrounds and experience. Elini: “My tattoos are a source of strength. I asked how she got into tattooing. Her They crystalize what’s important to me in answer seemed to be taken from a tale of life.” fantasy. “When I was sixteen, I had a dream that I was tattooing. But I didn’t know what Nate Strautkalns and his work I was doing. I didn’t know it was tattoos. But it made me curious. I found out I had dreamt about tattooing.” Right about here, I’d like to introduce you to Otzi the Iceman. He was a Bronze-Age man from around 3300 BCE. Otzi, who was found in a glacier between Austria and Italy, had 57 tattoos. His frozen body had aged well. That’s the earliest proof of tattoos historians have. As the centuries passed, Greek, Roman and Persian cultures made liberal use of tattooing. The Greeks, for instance, tattooed slaves and criminals so they could be identified if they escaped. Which brings me to the Civil War and New York City. That’s where the first professional tattoo artist opened shop around 1860. His clients: Civil War soldiers, inked for identification purposes. Which is why NYC is considered the birthplace of the modern tattoo. If you think of sailors when you think of tattoos, you’d be right. It was popular with them, which is why so many

Scott: “They keep track of time. Sometimes things happen and you feel you need to mark them down.” A tattoo artist: ““One of my clients, his father passed from Covid, and he ended up getting a rose for him.” Samantha: “I got the New York skyline on my wrist, to recognize my time locked in by Covid.” Johnny: “My body is my journal, and my tattoos are my story.” People with tattoos feel free to express themselves through body art. Most of those are backed by memory, and they all have meaning. Reasons are varied: attention, self-expression, artistic freedom, rebellion, a visual display of a personal narrative, reminders of spiritual/cultural traditions, identification with a group. Both Nate and Brandie agree on the changing profile of the typical tattoo customer. About half the customers are men, half are women. Nate says popular subjects include flowers, trees, landscapes. Also animals, such as tigers, panthers, eagles, dragons. Brandie says tiny, simple tattoos are hot now. Dainty things. Also the timeless tattoos, which include praying hands, roses, crosses, and the Virgin Mary. In case you’re wondering, I don’t have a tattoo. But after exploring the subject, I’m tempted to get one. Maybe I’ll make it a tribute to Otzi the Iceman. He’s about due for wider recognition.

Confederate General Sterling Price lies here. So does Susan Blow, the American Mother of Kindergarten, the explorer William Clark, teacher and abolitionist John Berry Meachum, poet Sara Teasdale, and a litany of storied Saint Louis names: Barnes and Benton and Busch, Eads, Maritz, McDonnell and Danforth, Lambert, Lemp, Wainwright and Mallinkrodt. Eleven Medal of Honor recipients. All of these iconic Saint Louisans buried in close proximity share one thing in common: each knew that the lifeblood of this land flows through the confluence of two great American rivers. Bellefontaine Cemetery holds stories that forged America. Good. Bad. Wild, like the story of Captain Bill Massie, the world’s greatest riverboat gambler. His unmarked grave belies his prowess. In the parlors of his riverboats, Captain Bill Massie could read the deadest poker face. His ability to count cards was the

same skill he used to memorize every bend and snag on the treacherous Missouri River. From the wheelhouse he could read the signs on the water’s surface—ripples, colors, stream lines—and tell whether they hid snags or sawyers, planters or preachers, those sneaky hazards lurking beneath the waterline, closer to Hell, and he knew how they changed depending on weather.

Other pilots paid Massie so they could follow his course, and sometimes he’d lead a string of six or eight riverboats. In sixty years of piloting, Massie sank only one boat, when the giant sternwheeler Montana hit the Wabash Bridge at Saint Charles. “Steamboat Bill” Heckman tells a story about Massie's Montana and her sister ship, the Dacotah, in the December 30, 1939 issue of Waterways Journal. When Captain John Gonsallis hit a stump in Provi-

dence Bend and sank the Dacotah in 1884, Massie sneered: “Did Gonsollas not know an obstruction as prominent as that stump in Providence Bend?” Gonsollas responded that the stump wasn't near as prominent as the bridge where Massie wrecked the Montana, just three months earlier. Massie eventually retired from the river to his homestead in Berger, Missouri, just a few miles up Highway 100 from Washington. Tucked into this riverboat gambler’s colorful life, luck dealt him a strange hand. On August 2, 1876, Massie sat at a poker table in Deadwood, South Dakota, with Wild Bill Hickok and two other players. On this day Hickok’s back wasn’t against the wall, as was his custom, and Massie apparently refused to change seats with Hickok not once but twice. Massie was winning and Hickok was losing. In Hickok’s last game, as Massie laid down his winning hand, an assassin’s bullet smashed into the back of Wild Bill’s head. The bullet exited through Hickok’s cheek and lodged in Massie’s wrist. Wild Bill’s fists still clutched his last poker hand with two pair— aces and eights—known to modern poker players as the dead man’s hand. Massie carried that bullet in his wrist for thirty-four years and took it to his grave in Bellefontaine Cemetery. Nobody knew the rivers better than Captain Bill Massie. Although he loved the gambling parlors, it was a sure bet your boat would be safe following him up the river. Almost.

I

have always had issues with cell phone reception in our house. We now have fiber optic Internet service, which should be blazing fast. But our Wi-Fi network signal was not reaching all areas of the house, so Internet access was dropped by various devices depending on their location in the house, and cell phone reception on Wi-Fi was spotty. I had what I thought was a great router, Wi-Fi extenders and what turned out to be just a big mess of old, duplicitous equipment that wasn’t doing the job.

The very friendly and helpful tech from Computer Tutors, Jeff Bannister, streamlined my network by installing a new mesh router system to work with the fiber service. Their techs always carry several mesh routers to be prepared for various circumstances. After he reconfigured the network, all devices, including desktop and laptop computers, smart TVs and our cell phones now work without cutting out in any part of our home. Never before had our cell phones worked all throughout the house. Additionally, the internet is even faster.

Also, my brother-in-law, Asher Benrubi/The SMASH, broadcasts a radio show from our lower level. He had contracted for his own cable internet signal because he hadn’t been able to get reliable service from the fiber optic line downstairs. Jeff reconfigured his setup to put him on our fiber network, which allowed him to cancel his cable service – saving lots of money and providing faster internet service for him as well. The Computer Tutors tech also took care of a few additional odds and ends that had been bugging me, like connecting my earbuds to my iMac and a Bluetooth speaker to play music from my cell phone. I recently bought a new printer and he set that up as well, saving me the time and aggravation it would have taken me to get it right. Lots of tech issues were fixed and solved in one visit. I am delighted with the results, and now refer to Computer Tutors as my “Handyman for All Tech Devices!”

A Hidden Fence Protects Your Dog and Adds Convenience for You

I

f you would like the convenience of letting your dog out of the house any time, day or night, without worrying they will wander off your property, there is a great solution. A hidden fence is an underground pet fencing system that uses a radio signal to keep your dog in a designated containment area, or out of an area, such as a swimming pool, patio, or garden. They can also create indoor boundaries to keep your pet off a couch, out of a room or away from a kitchen counter.

HOW A HIDDEN FENCE WORKS

A ‘boundary wire’ is buried a few inches underground around your property. The buried wire carries a harmless, low lev-

With an indoor system, the hidden wire runs around your couch, under the lip of the counter, around the trash or across a doorway or wherever you need to create a containment area tor an “off-limits” area. As your pet approaches the buried wire, the receiver collar emits a warning signal (audible or vibration). If your pet travels further, he will receive a mild but safe stimulation

Training is an important part of the process. This includes teaching your pet to recognize the containment area boundaries. Your pet learns that if he continues beyond the warning alert, he will receive a mild correction (a stimulation from the collar) that is unpleasant, but it will not “burn” or injure your pet. It is similar to the static shock you receive after walking across a carpet in your socks. After training, dogs usually stop before the warning signal to avoid the correction. Business brokers are experts in transition. An experienced broker should be able to help you wade through the minefield of potential problems. The broker and their team should have extensive history in business sales with success stories to back themselves up. Most sales are not as easy Tas all sides would hope. This is where experience with the tough ones helps, and can be vital to your future.

Frank discussion and knowing your situation now is better than working hard to sell when the market is not ready for your type of business. You need advice from someone heavily in the field to guide you. Meet your broker. Get to know them, their history and their company. While the acquisition market is currently strong, 2020 has changed the business and finance worlds. You need to understand how 2020 will affect your particular business as far as likelihood of selling and value. If you own a business that has been adversely affected by Covid, such as a restaurant, travel agency or hotel, you likely will realize a greater selling price by waiting until you have a year or two of positive tax returns behind you to share. But if you must sell now, or you can financially afford to sell and don’t want to put in the additional time, there are bargain hunting buyers active today. Buyers who know that business will return, and that have the cash to buy.

Even a very good businessperson needs a double check on the value of their business, and someone to handle aspects of the sale preparation while the owner focuses on keeping the business running. An incorrectly prepared sale can leave loose ends and can fail in due diligence, financing and transition plans. Even more so, it is very hard to keep a planned sale confidential without an intermediary.

Too often when you hear of a deal falling apart at the last minute, something could have been done to prevent the problems or save the deal. Or the buyer wasn’t told the cold hard facts up front. Skill, experience and assertiveness are musts in getting a deal to the closing table.

here are many moving parts to a business sale. Any owned real estate of course may be one of those parts, while many of the other pieces are not as obvious. Products, hard assets, services, financials, history, staff, competitive market advantage, family, future plans, competition, geography, emotional ties and more. All of these play a part in salability and value.

This Book Should Be in Every Home in St. Louis

any of us who have lived in the St. Louis area our whole lives don’t know much about our own history. We learn in school about world history, US history and facts about Missouri government, but very little is taught about the history of our own county. And newcomers to St. Louis generally know even less about the area.

To help all of us feel more connected to our own community, County Living Publications has re-published The History of St. Louis County, Missouri by William Lyman Thomas, a 100-year old book that documents our history from the earliest settlers through the Civil War and into the first decade of the 20th century. It documents what life was like 100 years ago here - the towns, neighborhoods, schools, churches, social societies, government, businesses, transportation and amusements of the period, and thousands of the people who were active in these endeavors. This is a quality softbound book of over 500 pages, with more than 100 historic photographs.
