CABINETRY The next garage storage consideration is cabinetry. Garage storage cabinets are the most secure and accessible solution for a crowded garage. They eliminate clutter and help to convert a messy garage into an attractive and useable space. Garage cabinets can be used to store lawn and garden supplies, tools, sports equipment, workbenches, trashcans, even golf bags.

Storage Solutions for a Functional, Attractive Garage

TRANSFORM THE MOST CLUTTERED ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE

SOLVING THE GARAGE PROBLEM he garage is the most cluttered and messy room in most homes. Now more than just a place to park vehicles, it carries all the overflow of stuff from the rest of the house. In effect, the garage has become a large disorganized and overstuffed cabinet. And because most garages are not really designed as storage space, it is inevitable that they become quite cluttered, crowded and disorderly. H O M E

T

Fortunately, with garage organization planning and the help of some clever storage solutions, your garage clutter problem can be readily solved. You can have custom systems in your garage to utilize walls, ceiling and floor to maximize usable space and order. OVERHEAD STORAGE One very practical solution is overhead garage storage. The lofts or overhead racks usually are lightweight but heavy-duty metal

frame that can carry moderate loads and bulky items. They are suspended from the ceiling, which has clear advantages. By freeing up the garage floor from clutter, you have space for more easily parking cars, a work or hobby area and heavier items that should be stored on the floor. Another advantage of overhead storage is easy accessibility. Seldom used or seasonal items like holiday décor are stored overhead out of the way and easily reached when you need them. Overhead garage compartments also keep potentially hazardous items out of children's reach. And now you can access your garage storage with a touch of a button. New overhead racks utilize Bluetooth motors that smoothly lift and lower your items through an app on your smartphone. There's no longer a need to get out a ladder to grab heavy items stored up top.

Common household chemicals and other hazardous substances can also be safely stored in secure cabinets. The proper cabinets can also protect workshop tools and supplies from moisture and dust. Lockable garage cabinets can keep dangerous items away from children. It will also protect your personal belongings when you leave your garage open. ATTRACTIVE GARAGE FLOOR OPTIONS And once everything is up off the floor, so you can actually see it, consider a more attractive floor than oil and paint-stained concrete. Epoxy floors have the look of granite, are durable and resist oil and other stains. Flooring tiles are available in a variety of colors and textures and can be used to create custom patterns. CALL THE PROFESSIONALS Like a custom kitchen or bath, there are advantages of complete garage storage and flooring designed and installed by professionals. The Organized Garage of St. Louis offers the most attractive, durable and customizable shelves, racks, cabinets and flooring available. Their 3D Rendering service will give you an accurate depiction of what your finished garage remodel will look like. How Can You Be Assured of the Best Experience Getting New Flooring for Your Home?

T

here are many places where you can buy flooring – hardwood, laminate, carpeting, tile - and have it installed. But the experience can be much less than satisfying. Chain stores are always running ads shouting their deals, but when you go into their stores you really feel you’re on your own. They will eventually ask what you want, point you to it and then go on to the next customer. The choices can be overwhelming, and there doesn’t seem to be a helpful attitude focused on your specific needs. In the big box home stores, you are lucky to find a salesperson at all, and when you do it might be someone from the paint department who’s filling in. And when it comes to installing it, you are often dealing with a different company.

Homeowners who report the most satisfying experiences shopping for flooring emphasize not just finding the right product for their home, but the service they received every step of the way. One flooring specialist that has been satisfying suburban St. Louis homeowners for over 27 years is Basye’s Abbey Carpet & Floor. Their attractive and well-organized showroom features a wide selection of top brand carpet, hardwood, luxury vinyl tile, stone, ceramic, porcelain, and laminate as well as specialty items such as cork flooring, backsplash/wall tiles, custom area rugs and runners. Their flooring experts go through continuous training to be able to recommend the best possible floor choice based on your needs, lifestyle and budget. They will visit

your home to measure without charge or obligation and will bring samples to help in your selection. Basye’s has their own installers who you will feel comfortable having in your home, and they guarantee your satisfaction. Basye’s state-of-the art website has a visualizer that lets you see flooring possibilities in your home before visiting the store. Owners Randy Basye and Tom Gould can be found helping customers in their beautiful showroom at 4091 N. St. Peters Parkway, St. Charles 63304. It is very convenient from both St. Louis County and St. Charles County, just 10 minutes from Page and Highway 270. You can call them at 636-939-3666 and learn more at basyeflooring.com.

t seems that when most homes were built, little thought was given to wardrobe, storage or at-home work needs of families that were going to live there. Maybe that’s why most of us have closets where there never seems to be room to put everything or ways to find anything. ily. For closets and workspaces that are more functional and enjoyable to use, it pays to consider a custom system. A professional designer can provide a solution that will work best for your specific needs, and flexibility to adapt as needs change over time. The process starts from scratch with the designer creating an organizational portrait of family members who will use the space, asking about their needs, accurately measuring and inventorying items that need to go in it. And to make it your own, offering choices of hardware, materials, specialized accessories and finishes.

The leader in custom-designed storage and workspaces for the home is Closet Factory. They emphasize customization in every step of their process, which begins with a free in-home consultation by an experienced designer. You’ll be presented with a selection of drawers, shelving, handles and knobs in an extensive array of the finest materials and finishes, from basic laminates to dramatic solid woods. Once you’ve approved every feature and finishing touch, each piece is manufactured to specification in their own factory. Is the Air in your Home making you sick?

T

hese days, people are spending more and more time at home, especially with more people working from home. According to the EPA, poor indoor air quality is one of the top five risks to public health. Air pollution inside the home can be two to five times higher than outside. The air we breathe inside our home contains many pollutants dust mites, germs, mold spores, bacteria, and even viruses. These can pose serious health risks.

In the 2020 world of Covid-19, it’s important that we all stay as healthy as possible. We don’t want our immune systems compromised, or have any decrease in lung capacity or efficiency. In most homes, the heating and cooling systems recycle the air, which means that if one family member gets sick, there is a good likelihood that

others in the family may also get sick.

THE SOLUTION

A high quality true HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filtration system has three separate filter layers. The first two layers will scrub the air in your home of 99.7% of all bacteria, germs, dust, dander, and pollen. The second layer will also take out 95% of all particles down to .1 micron, the size of virus material. And the third stage carbon filter removes odors, smoke and chemicals that are present in every home. A HEPA system is the best way to improve your Indoor Air Quality and to improve your family’s health. Less dust also means you will have a cleaner home and a better night’s sleep. INSTALLS EASILY IN AN EXISTING HOME.

You do not need a new ventilation system to achieve the benefits of HEPA pure air

quality in your home. BEAM, the leader in built-in vacuums, offers a three-filter, bypass system with all the features needed to provide HEPA pure air everywhere in your house. It is UL listed, and connects directly to your existing ventilation system. And since it runs 24/7, your system will do a better job circulating clean air and maintaining even temperatures throughout your house. BEAM brand HEPA Air Filtration systems are available exclusively at BEAM of St. Louis. Systems start at an affordable price of $759 for homes up to 3,000 square feet. BEAM has been installing HEPA systems, and BEAM Central Vacuum Systems for 39 years. They are A+ rated by the BBB of Greater St. Louis. You can contact them to schedule an appointment at 314-567-1515 or by email at sales@beamstl.com.

If Your Home is Settling, Don’t Panic. UNDERSTAND THE CAUSES, AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.

H O M E

F CLM

18

oundation problems can affect your home’s safety, appearance, and value. If you have wall or floor cracks, bowing walls or doors and windows that don’t close as they should, these are signs that your home may be settling.

WHAT CAUSES SETTLEMENT?

Settlement is the movement your home experiences when changes in the soil below cause it to no longer be able to support the weight of your home, or parts of it. This can be soil that is drying and shrinking, usually after long droughts; soil that remains wet and softens, usually from heavy rain or flooding where there is poor drainage; or compression of poorly compacted fill soil,

often where new building lots are developed. Even if you haven’t seen changes in your home recently, more settlement may occur. Continuing wet and dry cycles can cause soil changes, and settlement is not over unless steps are taken to fix the problem. SOLUTIONS THAT WORK

The most effective way to fix a settling home is to pier it. Steel push piers are driven deep to bedrock or a stable soil layer. They can

be installed inside or outside your home to lift it back to its original position, closing cracks and improving the operation of doors and windows. The solution is quick, and the problem is solved. On lighter structures such as stoops or decks, a helical pier or screw pile may be more effective because the structure may not be heavy enough to drive push piers to a sufficient depth. If you see cracks in walls or floors, inside or out, or doors or windows that don’t close as they should, don’t delay doing something about it. These signs of settlement may get worse if you ignore them. You can call Woods Basement Systems, the highest-rated, most reviewed contractor in their industry, for a free inspection. Their experts can restore your home to safe, functional condition. You can call Woods Basement Systems at 866-735-1890, or learn more at betterbasementvalue.com.

The Newer, Better Way to Make and Keep Garage and Basement Floors Attractive

I

f you are tired of your old, gross concrete garage or basement floor, you should know about the new generation of attractive coatings that go right over your concrete to give you a fresh, attractive shiny surface that stays looking great because it is much easier to maintain than a dull concrete surface.

You have probably heard of and seen epoxy coatings, but may not be familiar with a newer product called polyaspartic. It is similar in appearance, but there are advantages of the newer material, which until now has been used primarily in commercial settings. Polyaspartic coatings were first developed for steel bridges for their corrosion-resistant properties.

Polyaspartic coatings can be applied in a variety of weather and temperature conditions, so you won’t need to wait. They cure within 30 minutes to an hour vs.

Archway Industrial Coatings, Inc. is a St. Louis-based company with many years of experience in quality concrete coatings, both commercial and residential. They are leaders in polyaspartic flooring solutions that withstand the test of time, while meeting their customers’ installation schedules and budgets. Archway is committed to doing the highest quality work at the lowest cost. Their installers are employed directly by Archway, the highly trained “Dream Team” craftsmen who know the difference between a job and a job well done. They are accredited by the Better Business Bureau. You can now take advantage of their Fall Discounts. For a free estimate you can call them at 636-946-6464 and learn more about them at www.archwaycoatings.com.

In addition to greater strength, two advantages of polyaspartic concrete coatings are their quick drying time and nearly odorless

emissions after application. These innovations make them more versatile than traditional epoxy. The coating has a clear, glossy finish and decorative color chips are added for a bolder look and traction materials are added for a nonslip texture. Unlike epoxy, polyaspartic is always formulated to be colorfast, so the color won’t fade or yellow, even after extended exposure to UV rays. That means your garage will keep looking great longer.

about 16 hours for epoxy, so you can more quickly get back to your life. Polyaspartic dries hard, but maintains some flexibility, which helps keep a stain, abrasion, chip and scratch-resistant finish. It is also chemical, mold, mildew and salt resistant.

Stone and Tile Floors Looking Dull? HAVE U G LY G RO UT ?

M

ost stone or tile damage can be corrected. Whether it’s dull, stained, suffering water spots, cracks or chips, the problem can be addressed. A true stone professional will work with you to assess the root cause and to formulate a strategy to avoid a recurrence.

For the stone or tile surfaces in your home, it makes sense to contact a local specialist to discuss what can be done to restore them, and how to maintain them day-to-day. A brief dialog can extend the life of your stone and tile and save you from costly errors. The good news is that most problems are repairable and cost substantially less than replacement. Proper selection and application of a sealer can reduce or prevent damage from stains and water.

A ColorSeal treatment of your sanded grout can not only restore your original grout color but also topically seal it to better resist future stains. Many glass and tile cleaners will actually dissolve grout, leaving a rough spot. Fortunately, even this can be repaired. Grout repair and sealing are part of the repair and restoration process.

BEFORE

Experienced stone and tile craftsmen can provide pointers on how to maintain your stone and tile surfaces to keep them looking like the day they were installed. Your ceramic, porcelain, marble, granite, terrazzo, limestone or travertine will look new when your great-grandchildren come to visit generations from now. Don’t give up on your stone, tile or grout. Secure Your Home and Health During a Power Outage WITH A N AU TO M ATI C S TA N D BY G E N E R ATO R

W

ith increasingly unpredictable weather and power outages in our area, homeowners have more at risk than ever. Hot weather, storms and excessive winds can all knock power out, sometimes for days. Power outages happen in every season and can occur when you least expect them. Would you be prepared for days or long hours without power in the blazing heat of summer?

There has always been risk of losing power for air conditioning, heating, lighting and appliances in an outage. But now, homes with critical medical equipment, computer networks and security systems have more at risk than ever. That’s why many smart homeowners are installing backup generators to protect their home, health and property. Designed to operate even if you

are away, the generator continually senses the presence of utility power, and when it’s lost, automatically starts up. Homeowners who have used portable generators in past outages are trading up to these permanently installed systems. They eliminate the inconveniences of refueling, noise and extension cords. And, home backup generators are now more affordable than ever. Don’t worry whether the next outage will

keep your medical devices, computers and security system from working during a power outage. You can call Spark Daddy, full-service electricians experienced in installing and maintaining backup generators for homes and businesses. Spark Daddy features Generac® commercial and home generators that provide a constant fuel supply and turn on and off automatically. Mobile LinkTM Wi-Fi Connectivity is provided free with every Generac Guardian Series Home Standby Generator, to monitor it from anywhere. And Spark Daddy offers complimentary service for one year on any standby generator system purchased. The master electricians at Spark Daddy have 21 years of experience in residential, commercial and industrial electric services. They are fully licensed, bonded and insured, and ready to take on your electrical problems, including power loss, electrical fire, lighting strikes, storm damage and more. To discuss a stand-by generator at your home or office, or for any other electrical needs, you can reach Spark Daddy for a no-obligation consultation 314-800-6760 and learn more at yourfavoriteelectrician.com.

A Natural Water Habitat in Your Own Back Yard BY CH RIS SIEWING

CHRIS SIEWING is owner and president of Nature’s Re-Creations, nationally recognized as Master Certified Aquascape Contractors, first place winner of the North American Pond/Waterfall Competition and named by Aquascape as Artist of the Year in 2012. Nature’s Re-Creations stays on the cutting edge of technology and installation techniques to continually improve their projects and the environment. A

water feature isn’t just landscaping, it is a way of life. A well-designed water feature offers increasing pleasure as it matures. Over the years, you will notice changes in its appearance. It is, after all, a living thing. It evolves with the seasons, attracts birds and butterflies and it becomes a calming retreat from the stresses of everyday life.

A well-designed water feature is planned to be interacted with. Not just outside, but from inside the house as well. This usually requires placing the feature so it is visible from inside the house, and directing the waterfall toward the house as well. By doing this, you will not only offer a line of sight, but it will throw the pleasing sounds toward the windows, so you can be serenaded by cascading water. It is important to keep your water garden to scale without going overboard. Homeowners are drawn to the idea of large waterfalls in their backyard, but if not sized properly, they can look unnatural instead of blending into the landscape. You want to create something that appears to have been placed there by Mother Nature herself. This can be a challenge when locating the pond close to the house. In most cases, it requires working against the natural grade of the lot, using retaining walls and berms to get the waterfall to the proper height. But even a minimal elevation change can produce beautiful waterfalls that are to scale with the surrounding landscape.

The pondless waterfall is one of the fastest growing options in water features today. It provides a natural-looking waterfall without a visible body of water. It offers all the sounds of natural falls, and allows for many varieties of plants along the stream sections to adorn the water garden. You can have a natural looking feature, without having to worry about the safety of an open body of water or pond. This makes these great for young children, front yards or commercial settings. A natural looking pond will use different shapes and sizes of rock. To better integrate your feature into the natural surroundings, a few extra boulders or outcropping stones in the existing landscape provide good transition between the pond and your yard. The use of rock in your supporting landscape also allows you to create level beds for tall, vertical accents such as trees and shrubs. It is important in the planning phase to consider that when installing a water garden, you get two features - daytime and nighttime. Especially with a pond, when it is lit up at night, you can view your fish and other underwater features in a whole different way. Some people mostly enjoy their ponds at night because they work during daytime hours. If you want to be able to enjoy your pond at night, then you want to consider adding underwater lights to your design. Underwater lights are great for adding that extra “wow” factor to your backyard when you are entertaining friends and family.

hen planted in the fall, trees and shrubs push their energy into their root systems, which will continue to grow over the winter. This produces brighter, healthier growth above ground in the spring. Here are some terrific options for adding to the health and appearance of your yard.

TREES When planning where to put trees, consider available moisture in the soil, as well as sun and shade conditions. Evergreens and conifers like dry conditions, while river birch, black gum and paw paw trees need more moisture. Evergreens, including pines and

Bayberry is an evergreen that bears white berries in the fall. Winterberry holly is a deciduous shrub that loses its leaves in the fall, then produces bright red berries retained until Christmas. The leaves on autumn brilliance serviceberry turn a bright sunset orange in the fall.

If you want to attract butterflies, some trees are a big draw. The paw paw is the host plant for the zebra swallowtail butterfly caterpillar. Tiger swallowtail butterfly hosts are cherry trees and wafer ash. FLOWERING AND BERRY-BEARING SHRUBS Shrubs provide nice color for your yard. The pinky winky hydrangea gets 4 to 5 feet

Does Your Home Have Uneven Concrete Surfaces? –WALKS , STEPS , PATIO, POOL DECK OR DRIVEWAY?

T

hese are unsightly and also tripping hazards that could cause injuries.

You may have tilting concrete steps or sidewalks, driveways or patios where a seam has turned into a step, or repeated cracking in sections of concrete slabs. These problems are often the result of a shifting or a weak soil base or erosion.

In the past, contractors relied upon mud jacking or slab jacking to level concrete that had settled over time. This involves pumping concrete slurry under the settled slab to raise it, hoping that the settlement

won’t continue. But that requires large holes in the concrete - about the diameter of a soda can. It can take an entire day to cure and the mixture itself is heavy – about 100 pounds per cubic foot, which can lead to further sinking. There is now a great alternative called PolyLEVEL™, which uses a lightweight polyurethane mix that expands to fill the void beneath sunken concrete. This not only results in a solution that lasts longer, but also it looks better because it is less destructive to the applied surface. PolyLEVEL requires a much smaller hole – about the diameter of a penny, cures in 15 minutes and weighs much less – about two

pounds per cubic foot. It lifts concrete slabs to a level position with less weight and disruption than the legacy mud jacking or slab jacking process. The result is a safe, secure and level concrete slab. In the St. Louis area, Woods Basement Systems is the authorized contractor for PolyLEVEL concrete lifting. They will inspect your concrete walk, steps, pool deck, patio or driveway and provide an estimate to have your sunken concrete slab lifted with PolyLEVEL. To meet with one of their concrete repair experts, you can call them at 866-735-1890 or learn more at www.betterbasementvalue.com.

O

utdoor chair cushions are exposed to sunlight, wind, rain, dirt and dust and everything that drops from nearby trees. This makes them ideal environments for mold and mildew. So, as the 2020 outdoor season winds down, think about next year. To enjoy relaxing on your patio, by the pool or in your boat in spring 2021, make sure your outdoor seating is clean and ready. Even if you cover your outdoor cushions or store them in the garage during the winter, they may still accumulate dust, dirt and spider webs, so it’s a good idea to have them cleaned well before the season starts. If you have tried this yourself at home, you know what a chore it can be, whether you scrub the cushions in place or unzip them and clean them in your washing machine. And, you may still not be satisfied with the results. Here is a better idea. You can trust your outdoor cushion cleaning to the professionals. Woodard Cleaning & Restoration is St. Louis’s premier furniture cleaning company, and for good reason.

Their upholstery cleaning services will keep your outdoor furniture looking better longer. Woodard’s upholstery cleaning removes dirt and stains using the proper solutions to banish blemishes on even the most luxurious outdoor fabrics. And their Scotchgard®, mildewcide and deodorizers actually help prevent stains, mildew and unpleasant odors, and also prolong the life of your outdoor furniture.

And, Woodard provides an additional helpful service for your outdoor furniture. At the end of this season they will pick up your patio, pool deck and boat cushions, clean them, wrap and store them all winter long, until you are ready to have them delivered next spring. Even better, you can save 20% on cleaning, and they will store them for free, if you drop them off at Woodard and pick them up in the spring. That offer expires November 30, 2020. T

here are important reasons why people want to start an exercise and nutrition program. To lose weight, get strong and healthy, look and be their best for an upcoming event, or to simply be a positive role model for their family. These reasons take on personal importance that is unique to each individual.

What is not unique, however, are the three major barriers to success that my clients faced when they tried to reach these goals on their own. These issues are exactly why they turned to me to achieve the success you see in the examples on this page, and why you may consider doing the same if you are having a hard time reaching your health and fitness goals: NOT KNOWING HOW TO PUT A COMPLETE PROGRAM TOGETHER. A

comprehensive health and fitness program should consist of all the following with the proper amounts/ratios related to your specific goals: Nutrition, Supplementation, Resistance Training, Cardiovascular Exercise, Flexibility or Mobility Work and Proper Rest. If this seems a little overwhelming, you’re not alone. NOT HAVING A WORKABLE PLAN OF ACTION. You can try the latest and

greatest diet and exercise program known to man, but if it doesn’t fit into your schedule or

physical capabilities, as well as integrate all the components listed above, then you’re simply wasting your time. A health and fitness plan must be “doable” for the individual - otherwise it is useless. NOT HAVING A PROPER SUPPORT SYSTEM IN PLACE. Making changes in

your routine necessary for achieving specific health and fitness goals can be extremely challenging. It’s inevitable that you will come up against frustrations, uncertainties and questions along the way. Having someone there to guide, motivate, educate, support and hold you accountable to what you have committed to do for yourself will prove to be one of the best ways to reach your goals. If you are struggling with one or all of these problems on your path to improved health and fitness, then I would recommend not to waste another single day. HERE ARE WHAT MEMBERS OF OSTEOSTRONG RIGHT HERE IN ST. LOUIS HAVE TO SAY: PAT T Y, 62 M E M B E R SINCE SE P TE M B E R 2016

“Ten years ago I discovered that I had osteoporosis in my spine. I chose to monitor it and took no injections. Every year my scans showed no significant changes. I decided to try OsteoStrong in 2016. After five months I had another scan and again had no significant change. But after 22 months of OsteoStrong, I had another scan and my spine density had increased 8.8%! I now have osteopenia instead of osteoporosis. I was shocked and pleased, as was my doctor. My doctor asked what I was doing differently, and I told her that I had been going to OsteoStrong. I couldn’t be happier with my results or with OsteoStrong.”

ecent research shows that standard exercise isn’t nearly as effective as had been thought for building bone density and strength. A peer-reviewed study determined that for adults to increase bone density in hips faster than they are losing it requires osteogenic loading, resistance of at least 4.2 times one’s body weight. When done properly, osteogenic loading also triggers muscle development that is qualitatively different than from conventional exercise. Only high-resistance loading stimulates increased density of myofibrils, the proteins in cells responsible for contracting muscles. In 2012, wellness company OsteoStrong began offering their patented osteogenic loading system in centers across the US. People all over the world who are using this technology are experiencing not only improved bone density, but also muscle strength, improved posture and balance, and increased athletic performance.

It is a seven-minute sweat-free session in four different positions - chest, leg/hips, core and spine, that triggers an adaptive flexing response in bones and connective muscles. This is done in positions that are self-imposed for maximum results and safety. The system improves overall strength, balance and posture, without fatigue or soreness. And it works for people of all ages. The first OsteoStrong center in the St. Louis area opened in Creve Coeur in 2016. Now there are seven additional locations – Clayton, Ballwin, O’Fallon, Chesterfield, South County, Sunset Hills and Ladue. ALL OSTEOSTRONG CENTERS ARE NOW OPEN, BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. The health and well-being of our

members and staff are our highest priority, so we are following St. Louis County and St. Charles County health guidelines. To schedule an appointment or for more information, you can call 314-270-2005. You can learn more about OsteoStrong at: www.OsteoStrong.me.

“I had a total knee replacement four years ago, brought on by a lifetime of competitive golf and tennis. I noticed that my “good” knee was tiring out after 16 holes, and I was contemplating another knee replacement. After six months at OsteoStrong, I no longer feel that way. 18 holes is not a challenge anymore, and my “good knee” is holding up better than ever. I would recommend OsteoStrong to anyone.” JANA , 54 AN D M EGAN , 23 M E M B E RS SINCE FE B RUARY 2018

“My doctor recommended OsteoStrong to me after I started experiencing side effects from osteoporosis medication. After learning there was also a benefit for muscles (myofibrils), tendons and ligaments, I decided to have my daughter join with me. Megan was diagnosed with hypotonic muscles as a baby that caused a lack of muscle tone and a significant muscle nerve delay, which impact her reflexes and have limited her driving capabilities. But after 10 months of OsteoStrong, at age 23 Megan is able to drive by herself and has her own car! I know I’m strengthening MY bones, but Megan’s results are a dream that we never thought would become reality. Thank you OsteoStrong! Photos by JBeauvais Photography

would cry while praying for a miracle to help her stop.

She was very hesitant because she was in her 70’s and had never been hypnotized before. She had no idea what to expect and had many questions. In the end she decided to schedule an appointment. When she came into my office, we sat down and talked so that I could explain hypnosis to her. I do that with all of my clients so that they know what to expect during the session. I also explained what she could look for after the session was over. Then we talked about her smoking habit. She had smoked since she was a teenager and had tried everything that she could think of to stop smoking, with no success. She told me that she was at the point where she

During her session I showed her the power of her subconscious mind and how it was capable of helping her to make changes that she didn’t know she could make. I gave her a suggestion that her arm was so heavy that she couldn’t lift it from the chair. When she tried and was unable to lift it, her mind then accepted all of the suggestions that I gave her about being free from the smoking habit. She successfully stopped smoking after that one session. About 80% of the people that I work with are able to stop after one session. She called me a couple of months later and told me that I was the angel that God had sent to help her. I will always remember her and be thankful that I was able to show her that she had the ability to successfully make a change that was very important to her. We all have that ability. If you have something that you would like to change, I’d be happy to show you as well.

INFR ARED COAGUL ATION IS A PAINLESS , L ASTING TREATMENT FOR HEMORRHOIDS .

BY B ETSY CLE M E NS , M D

A

lmost everyone suffers from hemorrhoids at some time in their lives. Hemorrhoids are normal “cushions” of tissue filled with blood vessels at the end of the rectum. If enlarged, they can cause unpleasant symptoms. If left untreated, surgery may be required, which can be painful and require days to weeks of recovery.

Treatment options depend on the size of the hemorrhoids and severity of symptoms. Topical medications can relieve itching and shrink mild hemorrhoids. But for enlarged or bleeding hemorrhoids, options for longer-term relief have been limited to sclerotherapy, involving injections similar to those for varicose veins, rubber band ligation, stapling and surgery. Each of these can have varying

results, cause days of discomfort and possibly cause complications, some of which are severe. But another option is available, an outpatient procedure called infrared coagulation (IRC). It provides long-term relief and is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure that many studies have shown to be the optimal non-operative treatment of choice. It is fast, effective, well tolerated and has fewer complications than other options. The IRC treatment focuses infrared light on hemorrhoidal tissues. This coagulates blood vessels, causing the hemorrhoid to shrink and retract. The IRC procedure does not require anesthesia or special preparation. Patients may feel a slight warm sensation, but it usually is painless, and most patients return to work the same day. IRC received FDA clearance in 1984 and is covered by most insurance plans.

A Place in the Country BY BILL ZIE RCH E R

Thinking of Selling Your Rural Property? Now Is a Great Time. ru·ral Adjective in, relating to, or characteristic of the countryside rather than the city.

T G E TAWAYS

he demand for rural property is as strong as it has been in long time, perhaps stronger than ever in modern times. This summer has especially seen an uptick in demand. People are spending their time differently, creating more time and cause to take inventory of life. Many who have been thinking about having a place to live or play a little further out are deciding now is the time to make the move.

CLM

42

The long-term trends have to do with a population of all ages looking to get out of the metropolitan “rat race,” and the greater availability of lifestyle options in smaller towns like interesting restaurants, brew pubs, shops and music/winery venues. The renovation and improvement in rural com-

munities, making them more desirable for suburban and urban residents to relocate, has been on a steady increase for a long time. There is a sense of nostalgia about small town life that many people remember fondly from their childhoods and that they are now seeking to recapture.

RV sales are also hitting record highs, increasing attraction to rural activities and for living in their own “home on the road” at their own pace. Many families are connecting with nature more, and like me, they find it addictive. Working professionals are experiencing more life balance. The decline in time and desire to follow and watch professional sports is one example.

BILL ZIERCHER is the founder of Select Properties Real Estate. He has been active in building, buying, selling, and managing rural real estate and income property for over 25 years. His company’s 10-step marketing process offers unmatched exposure for your property on over 500 real estate search sites for the rural real estate market. For a free consultation on marketing your rural property, you can contact Bill at 314.412.3966. and for copies of previous “A Place in the Country” Articles you can email him at ziercher59@gmail.com:

It is about addition not subtraction. What I mean it is not decreasing the importance of career, rather increasing importance in other vital areas of life; recreation, family, exercise (hiking) and nature. People who have been thinking about having a place to live or play a little further out are deciding now is the time to make the move. Shifts in work, education, health, entertainment and shopping options have also added to the trend. With expanding broadband, residents in rural areas can work from home as easily as those in metropolitan areas. They can stream the latest and best in entertainment without having theaters nearby and shop from any website in the world with delivery directly to their homes. From a supply/ demand perspective Missouri, like most of the country, has extreme contrasts in population densities when you look at population per square mile. The shift in demand from urban/suburbanites has created an inventory imbalance increasing rural property demand, making it a great time for families to sell some or all of their rural property. n“Getting Away and Staying Connected” this article addresses how technology makes it easier to live, play, work or raise a family in rural areas n“Attracting Wildlife to your Rural Property” helpful hints for attracting deer, birds and more n“Water Features” explores lakes, ponds, streams and springs on rural properties n“Rural Property is a Great Investment” n“Selling, Buying and Owning Rural Property” Q&A on buying and selling

y recent meeting with Vesna Delevska at her Chesterfield gallery was accompanied by the sounds of cool jazz. She loves American jazz, listens to it constantly, and paints to it. Jazz has become a powerful creative force in her art and her life. Born and raised in Macedonia, Vesna wanted to go to the United States. Her parents were supportive and urged her to go to Oklahoma as an exchange student, where her brother was in college. She enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, graduated, moved to Kansas City, then to St. Louis, where she has lived for the past twelve years. “In Macedonia I was preoccupied with a strict and traditional education,” she said. “My work was subject to a lot of harsh criticism.” She was

driven to do something more with her life, and found education much freer here. “I realized I could dream something creative here, not traditional.” Her father, who lives in Macedonia, is an artist and a guiding force in her life. He

helped give her the confidence to pursue her dream, a dream that has become a reality for her in St. Louis. “I love St. Louis,” she says enthusiastically. “It is something different for me, older and more interesting. It has a soul.” Most of her art has been paintings on canvas in traditional sizes. Her style and subjects, however, are not traditional. She often explores the fantasy, the metaphysical, the hidden beauty of nature. The walls of her gallery are filled with her paintings in a dazzling display of colors and subjects, but all of them probing the deeper meanings of life and the universe. Vesna also expanded her talents to include murals, which began in Kansas City. She found she could express herself better in this larger format. “It started as my personal extension to get to a deeper level. For me, it seemed like a whole different reality.” Murals required her to think and plan differently, beginning with a sketch, which she would then project onto the wall and proceed to paint, making changes as it evolved.

FRIDAY SOUTH BAR & GRILL This mural was painted directly on a framed wooden surface attached to a brick wall. It served a purpose to expand the smaller or more closed feel of the outdoor patio. The soft and rich colors of the forest soften the more masculine look of the brick combined with the heavier wooden outdoor furniture. In its perspective and light it creates depth, expansion and a beautiful connection with nature.

She has several murals in and around St. Louis. They include the Shell Building downtown, The Monarch in Carondolet, and Friday South Bar and Grill in Collinsville. One of my favorites was a block-long jazz-themed painting in Grand Center. It was supposed to be up for two weeks for a street festival, but remained for three years before being dismantled. Which brings us to Vesna and music. She grew up influenced by classical music, but discovered jazz in St. Louis. Not just jazz, but “live” jazz. It started in a coffee shop. “We would bring musicians in. I listened to them, saw them perform ‘live,’ became inspired by the sound and the atmosphere.” Painting to music uncovered a completely different direction for her. “I feel like a musician, even though I don’t play an instrument. I have no idea what I’m going to do, and then the music starts…” Inspiration and imagination take it from there, to create her “live jazz” paintings. She connects with the rhythm and sound, the freedom of interpretation, improvising along with the musicians. “The music moves me to new colors, new realms of awareness.” A few words about her spiritual explorations: “Psychiatry and psychology attracted me in college. Now I read all kinds of things, including Eastern philosophy, books on self-consciousness, and the writings of Jiddu Krishnamurti.” She has also been deeply involved in the St. Louis art community since 2009. That includes the Regional Arts Commission, the Artists Guild, St. Louis Community Colleges, and the Prison Performing Arts, as well as other non-profit organizations. Her paintings have been sold throughout the world, including Australia, Canada, Asia and Europe. Stop by her gallery at 140 Chesterfield Mall. For more of her work and contact information about purchases and lessons, visit Vesna-art.com.

GR AND CENTER MUR AL This mural was commissioned by Grand Center and its purpose was to help celebrate the annual “Dancing In The Streets” outdoor festival through visual arts. My goal was to show movement through Music and Dance. Its transparency resembles sound while the painted figures are like instruments connecting and portraying the essence of sound in form and beauty.

That Famous Hannibal Voice IT’S NOT WHO YOU THINK …

Next time you sit down with the kids to watch Disney’s Pinocchio, listen to the cricket. He was born here. At least, his voice was born here. When that loveable bug sings “When You Wish Upon a Star,” the voice of Jiminy Cricket is a Hannibalian named Cliff Edwards. Never heard of him?

One fan believes a curtain call is long overdue for Mr. Edwards. Stephen Andsager isn’t from Hannibal. He’s from Columbia. But Steve has something in common with Edwards: They’re troubadours whose instrument is a ukulele. Steve stays busy as a bandleader, dusting off tasty ballads and toe tappers from America’s obscure musical archives. Years ago I played with Steve in the Mudbugs, a band with a honky swamp swing style and a sidebar campaign to make the mudbug (crawfish) the state crustacean. The Missouri legislature didn’t share our zeal. Steve is on a mission to reintroduce Missourians to Cliff Edwards. When you look at his body of work, you’ll realize Cliff is a familiar friend. You’ve heard his voice as a dying Confederate soldier in Gone with the Wind. You’ve heard him sing “When I See an Elephant Fly” in Dumbo. His hit records include “California Here I Come,”

Capitol’s Hall of Famous Missourians. The waiting list is long. But Steve makes a compelling case. “Who is the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll?” he asks. “That’s easy: Elvis. But who is the King of Ukulele?” Not Tiny Tim. Not Don Ho or Arthur Godfrey. It’s Ukulele Ike.

“His achievements include nine Broadway productions,” Steve said. “He had his own radio and TV shows. He sold 74 million records and performed in more than 100 films. “Long before the guitar was the mustClifton Avon Edwards was born in Hanhave instrument, all the cool kids played nibal in 1895. He later moved to St. Louis ukulele,” Steve said. “Just about everyone and St. Charles, and eventually Hollywood. knows someone who plays a uke these days, He was a fixture on the vaudeville circuit, but the instrument’s first wave of populariand the Ziegfield Follies. He appeared in ty began before World War II. Ukulele Ike movies starring Buster Keaton, Joan Crawwas the inspiration for millions of budding musicians.

“It’s Only a Paper Moon,” and “Singin’ in the Rain,” which was a chart-topper before the Gene Kelly movie.

“Despite his career success,” Steve told me, “Cliff’s personal life was problematic. Like most entertainers, his brand went out of style and the popular culture of the sixties left him behind. He died penniless in a nursing home with no family and no one to claim his body. “Ukuleles are everywhere lately,” Steve said. “But nowhere is there a memorial for Ukulele Ike. He was a great American entertainer who lacks the recognition he deserves. At the very least, there should be a memorial bust in his birthplace of Hannibal MO.”

There are traces of Ukulele Ike in Hannibal. You can find his story in the Hannibal Museum downtown. But no statue. Underappreciating Ike can be forgiven of a town so immersed in Mark Twain. But when you wish upon a star, what do you sing? John’s new book, Souls Along the Road, is available online.

the answer is the same every time: Your dog pulls on his leash because it works. Many pet parents have struggled with leash skills for years. Their dog pulls as soon as they attach the leash and doesn’t let up during their walk. They’ve learned that pulling on the leash gets them where they want to go, so why would they stop? The key to ending this behavior is persistence. When your dog pulls on the leash, don’t tug him back. Instead, freeze and wait until he stops pulling to continue. Once he brings his attention back to you, reward him and move forward. And if your dog pulls again? Stop again. Repeat. It takes time, energy and patience, but it’s worth it to teach your dog to politely walk on a leash. There’s a whole lot more to leash manners than not pulling. But this is a great place to start! If you’re struggling, visit Petropolis and we can fit your dog to a proper harness and give you some pointers.

he love of a pet remains constant in life’s ups and downs. During happy times they add to the joy and adventure. In challenging times, like many of us find ourselves in now, they bring comfort and companionship. As we are more isolated due to COVID-19, our pets are happy we’re home with them. When looking for the positive in this I think about all the people walking in my neighborhood, dogs on leash, enjoying the beautiful summer weather. While there is no doubt much to worry about, I also see much to be grateful for. For those who do not have a pet yet, or are thinking about adding another, now can be a great time. Most of us are home more and can spend the time potty-training a puppy or bonding with an adult dog, and cats were pretty much made for social distancing. Numerous studies also show pets are good for our

health and reduce stress and depression. There is no evidence that COVID-19 is spread by pets, according to both the CDC and World Small Animal Veterinary Association. The APA Adoption Center continues to help animals in need while prioritizing the safety of our staff and the public. To follow social distancing requirements, we have modified our adoption procedures with options to visit, adopt curbside, or foster to adopt. Potential adopters can view available animals on our website, and each has a photo and description. We have staff available to answer additional questions and complete adoptions over the phone. We can accommodate socially distanced visits with adult animals and all animals over 6 months can go out as foster-to-adopt which is basically a trial adoption. If it is a great fit, we can finalize the adoption over the phone! New animals become

In the first weeks of the pandemic we reached out for help getting animals into adoptive or foster homes and the St. Louis community was amazing, helping us place 138 animals in a matter of days. Every animal that could leave the building did! Regardless of what is happening in the world, people continue to look for ways to help and it is inspiring. Bringing people and pets together is at the heart of our mission. While that centers around pet adoption, we continue to deliver virtual programs such as Tuesday Tails story time and humane education curriculum. We have also launched our Crisis Housing Program to help with the anticipated nationwide eviction crisis. The APA Adoption center has been serving

the St. Louis community for 98 years. Think about it, that includes WW2, The Great Depression, the ‘85 World Series, losing the Big Red, and losing the team that shall not be named. Together we will get through this. If you’re interested in learning more or supporting our work, visit apamo.org. In Business, Your Story Can Make All the Difference. What’s Your Story? BY TOM RUWITCH

FEEBLE STORIES RUIN MARKETING CAMPAIGNS Here's what happened: Their business story was feeble. It was out of tune with prospects' desires and fears. It didn't make prospects say, "Yeah! I can relate!" It didn't inspire them to say, "Tell me more!" It lacked any POWER. And here's the big lesson: When your business story lacks power, your marketing stalls...No matter how great the tool or how clever the tactic. The story is the nucleus of your marketing. If that core doesn't have power, your marketing will break down. WHY I HELP BUSINESSES POWER UP THEIR STORIES That’s why I founded Story Power Marketing – to help businesses power up their stories so prospects will tune in, stay tuned, and take action. It took me years to get this. When I got started as a business owner in the 90s, I made the same mistakes I now see business people repeat over and over. I grew my business, but not efficiently and comfortably.

It was slow, unpredictable, tiring, frustrating, and... unenjoyable…until this happened… THE BEST BUSINESS STORIES ARE ABOUT YOUR PROSPECTS, NOT YOU A prospect was so happy with our sales presentation that she jumped into the rep’s arms and gave him a hug. The prospect was Jane. The rep was Pat, our vice-president of sales. The company was MarketVolt, the email marketing firm I founded in 2001 and ran until we sold it in January.

Most businesses start by describing what they sell. They pitch without stories. Prospects tune out. They’re on guard. They’re skeptical. They resist. When stories evoke prospects’ before-to-after journey, prospects remember what you’ve said and crave more. They’re curious. They’re on the edge of their seats. They want to hear about your products and services. They’ve turned from resistant to eager. They’re eager to take action.

Pat told Jane about a new feature in our software. When Jane realized it would save her hours each week...and it would eliminate buckets full of headache and hassle… and it would make her job SO much easier… This is not some far-fetched fairy tale about story wizards with magical powers. This is she literally couldn’t help herself, and she real. And it’s easier than you might imagine. jumped into Pat’s arms. TOM RUWITCH is founder and president of Story Power Marketing. You can harness the power of stories to make marketing easier and more productive at StoryPowerMarketing.com/CountyLiving. Register for a free training: A Masterpiece Ad That Shows You... HOW TO CREATE STORY-POWERED SUPER-MAGNETS TO ATTRACT LEADS, KEEP THEM TUNED IN, AND INSPIRE THEM TO ACT. ere’s a sad story I see repeated often in business. It’s a cautionary tale with some great business lessons: Business leaders invest big bucks in fancy marketing tools and technology. They hire smart people. They employ consultants. They execute cool tactics. They make all the “right moves” to deliver their pitch, and then…

That story lit a light bulb in my brain. I realized MarketVolt’s story was not about our features and benefits. Our story is Jane’s story -- eliminating headache and hassle, moving from stuck to unstuck, the journey from frustration to fulfillment. I re-told Jane’s story -- and other prospects’ stories – consistently after that.

COMMUNICATIONS: PHONE SERVICE, INTERNET AND TV

CLM

Over the past few months I have spent hours and hours on the phone, online and with multiple service calls in my home with providers of these services, ordering and returning equipment, before arriving at the selection of services that our family is now very satisfied with. As you’ll read, there were hopes, hypes and disappointments along the way, and I am hoping to save you some of what I went through to get to solutions that will make you happy. CELL PHONE SERVICE We have had problems for years with poor cell phone reception in some rooms of our house, even with smartphones and adding wi-fi networks and boosters. “Can you hear me now?” and dropped calls have been a way of life for longer than I can remember. When I was on a call that was working, I dared not answer nature’s call for fear that I

would drop the other call in the bathroom. Only recently did I learn that a specific feature on smartphones, WI-FI CALLING, which greatly improves cellphone reception in wi-fi environments, is not offered by the carrier I had been using for years, which of course I was never told when I signed up with them for cell service. If you have issues with cell phone reception or dropped calls in your house or other wi-fi locations, first go to the Settings section of your smartphone and look for the Wi-Fi Calling option. If it is not activated, try to turn it on. If you can’t do that, ask your provider if it is offered on their system. Note that strong and really stable wi-fi is necessary for thismfeature to work effectively. If wi-fi is spotty in your house, you may need a wi-fi mesh system for more uniform performance. And if you are considering switching to a new cell service provider, be sure to ask if they offer the Wi-Fi Calling feature. If not, I recommend you choose a provider that does offer it. What I found is that it’s not worth saving a few bucks on a cheaper service if they don’t offer this feature that has greatly improved reception and reduced dropped calls in my house. HIGH-SPEED INTERNET One internet service provider here has claimed for years that their service was much higher speed than alternatives. I don’t know if they were comparing their service to dial-up or twisted copper, but I had used their internet service in my home for years, and was constantly bounced offline, and multiple users would slow service

In the last year our little street with just five houses became part of the lucky 25% of US homes that have had fiber optic lines installed. When I saw the skimpy little fiber optic wire from the street to my house before it was buried, I wondered if it could really make a difference. Well, I am here to tell you that the service is blazing fast – up to 20 times faster than what we had before, especially the upload speed, which is the same as download. And there is no degradation of speed when multiple users are online. If you have slow or interrupted internet service or dropped landline calls, the problem could be the copper wire or coaxial cable coming into your house, but it could also be in your modem and/or router. A good IT service company should be able to find the problem. But if your house has access to fiber optic, there is nothing quite like it. WIRELESS TV Now that I have fiber optic internet service, I thought I would try an amazing new service the provider offered: wireless TV. For each TV set you can get a very small wireless receiver that just plugs into the wall and into the TV – no need for a cable connection. The remote takes spoken commands. We were delighted with the simplicity of the system and the reception. Until we learned that our new service did not have an agreement to be able to deliver the local public TV channels. They offered a PBS app, but that was only for archived programs. Well, in our house that was a deal-breaker. So even if you find the latest, highest-tech wireless or streaming option for watching television, be sure to ask before it’s installed whether it offers your favorite stations – all of them. Another option for home TV service is to switch to one or more of the countless number of streaming services. But that's a topic for another column. Please share your own product or service experiences – good and bad – with us. We will select some for future columns and give you credit! love this country. I carry a sense of gratitude for my grandparents and greatgrandparents who arrived from Eastern Europe in hopes of building better lives for themselves and their families.

When my young father, a Marine veteran, married my creative and talented mother, they saved their money, bought a home in St. Louis County, and started their family.

My dad and his father opened and ran a junkyard (he called himself the original recycler). From there, he went to work selling Chevys. His work ethic taught Garry, Joy and me the value of family, community, and hard work. My mom worked part-time and encouraged us to think “out of the box”. We learned that we could do and be anything!

CLM

The three of us became first generation college graduates before starting our own careers and families. After teaching in elementary schools, I built a career with a boutique advertising firm helping small businesses grow. My husband, Mark, started his own company. We are proud of our two sons, now grown--one engaged, one happily married, and all four of them successful in their own careers. But today, families are having a harder time providing their children the opportunity for a better future, which my generation and my parents’ generation had. Even prior to the pandemic, policies rewarding special interests and big corporations at the expense of real people’s needs have often left middle class families behind. Access to quality, affordable health care is

essential, as it was even before COVID-19. Costs, including the costs of prescription drugs, continue to rise. Especially now, the need for quality health care for all of our neighbors is even more clear. Critical to opportunity is access to quality education. Whether at the early childhood, K-12, or college level, apprenticeships or vocational programs, this country will thrive when educational opportunities are available to young people throughout our state and our nation. As small businesses are struggling to stay afloat, and families are facing the agonizing decision of whether to send their children back to school this fall, leadership is essential. My mom and dad taught me to work hard and when I saw a problem that needed to be fixed, to step up and fix it. That’s why I’m running for Congress in Missouri’s 2nd congressional district. From serving on my local school board, to the City Council, State House and now

the State Senate, I have been able to work across the aisle to craft and pass common-sense solutions to real problems that impact people’s lives. What I’ve learned as a public servant is that if you are willing to roll up your sleeves and work hard, even with people who disagree, you can make a difference. All of the legislation I have passed in the Missouri legislature -- where my party is not in power -- has been with overwhelming bipartisan support: ending surprise billing in hospital emergency rooms; making daycare safer for our children; Justice for Survivors: requiring all Missouri hospitals to provide rape kit examinations to sexual assault survivors; requiring training for mental health professionals, and offering all educators training in suicide prevention and awareness and more. Throughout my life, my experiences have brought me to this important moment. And now, I am asking my community to send me to Washington to help take on the problems we face. It is time for change in Washington. We need to elect someone who will address challenges and craft solutions to benefit the people back home. We need someone who is willing to stand up to those in power when the interests of the people she is elected to serve are at stake. It is time to end the partisan bickering and divisiveness that is today’s Washington and work to get things done. As generations of people look forward, we want things to be a little better for those who follow us. It is up to us to create the world we can envision and imagine. It is up to those we elect to listen, learn, and lead. The time for change is now. Together, we can make that change. JILL SCHUPP is running for Congress

any people call every day, and we try to help them all. One elderly couple called last week after 6pm. Surprised that I even answered the phone at that hour, she told me what happened. She had taken a call from “Microsoft” who she let remote into her computer to “fix” it. As it turned out (and always does), it was a scam and they attempted to bilk her out of thousands of dollars.

When she called she was hysterical, having just hung up on the scammer posing to be from “Microsoft.” I told her to immediately stop and block any contact from and with them and to immediately turn her computer off until we could remove the remote-in software program that the scammer had used to get into her computer. She was worried that her banking, credit card, email would all be compromised. Fortunately, she got to me and we were able to help her before any scam was perpetrated. One of my techs went to her house the next morning

and removed the software installed by the scammer to let him remote in. We also did a ‘clean and tune’ and updated all of her software apps plus changed her email, banking and credit card passwords as a precautionary measure. After continued harassment, the scammer finally gave up. I told the couple they could always call me when they get an email or phone call from someone they are suspicious of and I will tell them what to do. It’s frustrating and sad that this occurs every day and I hear about instances – sometimes too late—where one of our clients gets scammed. Don’t let anyone remote in to your computer – no matter how convincing they sound – if you don’t know them. It’s always bad news. While we can’t prevent you from calling suspicious phone numbers or answering suspicious phone calls, we can help by providing guidance if you do receive unwanted phone calls or by telling you not to call the number in the first place. Don’t get scammed, call me first and I will advise you and, if necessary, one of our techs will do a clean and tune to rid you of malware and other problems.

any of us who have lived in the St. Louis area our whole lives don’t know much about our own history. We learn in school about world history, US history and facts about Missouri government, but very little is taught about the history of our own county. And newcomers to St. Louis generally know even less about the area.

To help all of us feel more connected to our own community, County Living Publications has re-published The History of St. Louis County, Missouri by William Lyman Thomas, a 100-year old book that documents our history from the earliest settlers through the Civil War and into the first decade of the 20th century. It documents what life was like 100 years ago here the towns, neighborhoods, schools, churches, social societies, government, businesses, transportation and amusements of the period, and thousands of the people who were active in these endeavors. Selling Your Business in the Year of COVID: THE NEWS IS NOT ALL BAD. BY J E F F BACH fter the better part of a decade of helping many people sell their businesses, I have developed a pretty good feel for where the market is. But early in 2020 when people asked me if it would still be a good time to sell their business, I had to tell them that in all honesty I didn’t know. We were going to have to see how things shook out and that we would know more some months down the road. The year 2020 has been the most interesting and troubling of times most of us have lived through.

A

Now the good news. Solid businesses with revenues that are flat or growing this year are selling. The economy was on fire before Covid, and entrepreneurs know it. If a business did well during this difficult year, people are even more confident to buy it, since 2019 was the best year in small business acquisitions ever! And buyers know that certain industries have excelled this year, making them even more desirable. Examples include home remodeling contractors, building materials, landscaping and exercise equipment. Banks are still comfortable with financing acquisitions for companies that have done well.

Now that we are seeing a light flickering at the end of the tunnel, I can give a bit better answer. First let’s discuss the bad news. If you own a business that has been adversely affected by Covid, such as a restaurant, travel agency or hotel, now is NOT a good time to sell. If there is any way that you can hang on until things turn, please wait. Banks and buyers are going to look at your financial numbers as today’s reality, and take them into account in their valuation.

From the buyer’s point of view, a lot has happened this year as well. Many have realized that their career can change overnight when working for someone else. By owning a business, you at least have some control of your own destiny. This reality has created a large buying pool that will most certainly look at your business if you list it for sale. The market always needs more sellers!

Keep in mind that this won’t change until you have probably two years of positive tax returns behind you to share. So, if you must sell now, or you can financially afford to sell and don’t want to put in the additional time, there are bargain hunting buyers active today. Buyers who know that business will return and that have the cash to buy. If you are in a bad spot, or are just done with ownership, contact a business broker about selling. Make sure they are realistic with you about the potential outcome.

Do take 2020 as a wake-up call, however. Things happen. If your plan was or is to transition out of your business in the near or mid-range future, DO NOT WAIT. What if these business challenges get worse, or something like this happens again? People have lost literal fortunes this year. Work on your succession plan now. Contact a business broker who understands these conditions, and find out what your options are.
