ON THE COVER
This classic home demonstrates how a creative lighting design can completely change the look and feel of your home. The homeowners wanted to have their patio well lit, but with a unique flair all their own. Classic uplighting on the columns and pergolas provide the foundation of the design. Down lights inside the pergolas and creatively placed lighting on the ornamental trees and lights subtly illuminating the lower-level plantings continue to build the ambiance. The dramatic look is further emphasized with lamps on each of the brick pillars throughout the patio.
The ultimate finish to this one-of-a-kind design is the custom Craftsman style bollards at the front of the landscape beds … providing not only the unique design of the fixture itself, but an even more dramatic effect with the light and shadow patterns dominating the foreground. This custom design with layered lighting effects provides the dramatic and unique backyard these homeowners envisioned.
This lighting design and installation were provided by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives. Their lighting designs are considered to be Best-in-Class in the outdoor lighting industry in the St. Louis area. They are proud of their success in meeting and exceeding their customers’ expectations with their focus exclusively on lighting – not only architectural lighting for the front of the home, but they also offer landscape lighting designs for pools, patio and deck lighting, gardens and water features.

New Generation of Leadership at County Living
To our valued readers:
It is an honor and a privilege to lead the next generation of County Living Magazine as Todd Abrams passes the torch of his beloved publication of twenty years to me. I hope to continue to work with Todd as he shifts his focus to his other publication HEALTH&CARE® Journal, while offering so much value to this publication.
My diverse background in occupational therapy, professional photography, graphic design, marketing and sales all uniquely position me to bring vision, interest and creative direction to County Living Magazine. I am passionate about taking all things to their greatest potential and I am looking forward to exploring new ventures and partnerships through this publication.
I invite readers of County Living Magazine to join me as we highlight our local communities, small business owners and together learn about the multitude products, services and information that have the potential to improve our lives in ways that make it easier, healthier and more beautiful. To explore the landscape of our community of the people who are the dreamers, risk takers and hard-working souls enriching our lives.
I have always held the conviction that small businesses are the backbone of our local economies, playing a vital role in building vibrant communities. As nearly a quarter of all transactions done per household are with one of the “BIGS” like Amazon. My vision for this publication is to provide visibility to the multitude of what our communities have to offer to us all, while supporting a thriving business ecosystem.
I look forward to meeting and introducing the many individuals who not only pour dedication into what they do to enrich our lives, but also provide so many jobs for our local economy. Two out of every three new jobs in the US are from small businesses, and so small businesses are still considered vital for innovation, jobs and generating economic growth. It is my hope and chief aim to stimulate our local economy as much as I can, while providing great value for our readers.

WITH J. ELINOR LERCH
Travel, parenting, grandparenting, dating, or just life – the gaffes and the goofy are wasted if not shared. Especially if they are self-inflicted. I hope these narratives make you laugh (or at least smile). And I promise – they are all absurdly true.
From the Beatles to Botox 17
th-century poets suggested that women who painted their faces were “taking the pencil out of God’s hand.”
You know what? If necessary, I’ll wrestle that sharpened kohl from the Almighty himself, and influencers everywhere will get it, because my delight at a well-stocked makeup drawer predates Woodstock. (Well, OK, not quite. But I loved the reference.)
Before there was Goop, or Bobbi Brown, or MAC, there was Bonne Bell and Yardley. (No, Bonne Bell was not a saloon singer in an old Western, nor the ill-fated daughter of Rhett Butler.)
For teenage girls of a certain decade, Bonne Bell meant never being without the magic of Ten-O-Six Lotion, which promised to banish blemishes and create “luminous, healthy skin,” and their ads offered a close-up of actress Cybil Shepherd as proof. Because it was not the still-forbidden “make-up,” my mom happily bought it for me in the largest bottle available. My best friend thought my obsession was absurd. “Oh, please,” she would say, half-amused and half-annoyed. You have NEVER had a zit on that face!”
Around the same time, there was Yardley, a centuries-old English brand re-energized by the mania for all things British. (Think Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton, and a certain Lonely Hearts Club Band.) I knew exactly how many hours I had to babysit before I could walk to the marvelously turreted Lammert’s Department Store in Webster Groves and buy Yardley’s “Goodnight Slicker,” a hugely popular lipstick that was the color of an old Band-Aid, but with a bit of shimmer.
Fast forward a few years, and this skin care/makeup thing had become even more fun, with more choices and (slightly) more disposable income. But tragically, still pre-Instagram and TikTok, so my main influencers were the perfectly made-up ladies behind the oh-so-sophisticated cosmetic counters of Stix Baer & Fuller.
At that point, the must-have brands were Clinique or Lancôme, and so my grocery budget suffered because $20 mascara HAD to be better than the plebeian Maybelline, right? (Of course, Maybelline is consistently one of the best-selling brands in the US, and once I got over my cosmetic snob phase, it became my go-to and still is.)
But the marketing was alluring, and I was eager to believe, for too many years, that Dramatically Different Moisturizer really was. Alas, there is a reason skincare creams were derisively referred to as “hope in a jar.”
The makeup artists were not just skilled at their craft, they were also angels of diplomacy, expressing practiced astonishment at my age (“Your skin is AMAZING!”). And yes, I let myself be enveloped in the compliments, even if they were probably fueled by a commission/bonus mindset. This was, ULTA-mitely, a place about fantasy…
Clearly I was not up-to-date on the latest potions. When my talented artist said she would start “with a little primer,” I felt like an episode of This Old Face and wondered if it required a trowel. I did not understand that this first step had nothing to do with birthdays, but rather the intended and unrealistic goal of a flawless finish. And I have to admit – she knew what she was doing. The end result was, if not a miracle, very satisfying. Oh, yes – about the B word. Ever since my first experience with the magic that is Botox Cosmetic, I’ve been an enthusiastic fan and advocate. Botox, utilized judiciously with Retin-A, is the gold standard for good skin at any age.
Yours truly shopping for Yardley in 1969
As I entered my 7th decade believing all hope was lost, my pretend granddaughter–a savvy, smart young woman with just the right amount of sass—introduced me to the sensory-overload experience that is Ulta Beauty. Julie and her mom — my pretend daughter Michelle — were very amused by my wide-eyed astonishment at the cavernous size of this Cathedral of Self-Care. I was beyond grateful for their company, because the youthful exuberance of customers and staff was more than a bit intimidating.
And I am always perplexed by tabloid headlines like “Famous Beauty Admits to Botox.” Admits? It’s a procedure, not a felony. Those fake-outrage declarations harken back to the 60s once again, when magazine ads and catty neighbors whispered, “Does she or doesn’t she?” and they were referencing hair color.
Appropriating God’s pencil is great fun, but discovering the eraser at the other end is just as rewarding.

The Joys of Gardening and Outdoors
Gardening is a journey, filled with experimentation, learning, and a touch of adventure. For homeowners, the garden and lawn are not just outdoor spaces but extensions of the home that offer beauty, sustenance, and a sense of accomplishment. Here’s a glimpse into one of our gardening adventures to share what we learned.
Harvesting the Rewards of Sustainable Gardening - Straw Bale Gardening
Our best vegetable garden a few years ago flourished and it was an incredible feeling to see it producing so well. We tackled the challenge of our clay-rich soil by trying straw bale gardening. The dense soil requires extensive composting to support vegetable growth, so we opted for straw bales as an innovative solution.
Using straw bales creates a raised-bed garden, which is kinder to the back and knees. This also allowed us to reuse resources, as we sourced the bales from neighborhood decorations post-Halloween and Thanksgiving, acquiring 15 bales that would have otherwise been discarded.
We left the straw bales to decompose over winter. In early spring, my husband treated them with natural fertilizer and water, preparing them for planting. This has been an enjoyable learning experience, and now, we even grew our own seedlings—though next time, we’ll find a better way to label them, as our tags faded in the sun.
My husband installed a drip system with a timer, ensuring our garden was watered even when we were away. This system not only conserved water but also allowed us the freedom to travel without worrying about our plants.
As experimental gardeners, we strive to keep our practices sustainable and
climate and require fewer resources, saving time and money. Consult local botanical gardens for advice on native plants suited to your region.
chemical-free. We have also expanded the garden area to reduce the amount of lawn to maintain. This commitment is mirrored in our frequent visits to the local farmer’s market, where we support farmers who grow beautiful, chemical-free produce. Landscaping for Comfort, Health, and Wellness
Our landscapes offer us many opportunities to impact the comfort, overall well-being, and energy efficiency our homes provide. Strategic landscaping can enhance your home’s beauty while improving comfort and reducing energy costs.
Plants around the foundation can provide insulation, while taller trees and shrubs serve as windbreaks and shade providers. Planting deciduous trees strategically blocks the summer sun and allows winter sunlight to warm your home, enhancing comfort and energy efficiency. Planting trees now ensures they mature over time, providing benefits of shade and wind protection. To paraphrase the old Chinese proverb “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago; the second-best time is now.”
Choosing native plants and trees ensures they thrive with minimal water and maintenance while attracting local wildlife. These plants and trees are adapted to the local
Many homeowners are shifting towards more garden space and less lawn. Lawns require significant water, chemicals, and maintenance. Instead, consider edible gardens or wildlife-friendly landscapes with native plants.
The Other Parts of Your Landscape - Water and Hardscape Materials
Efficient water management is crucial for sustainable landscaping. Rain barrels and rain gardens help retain rainwater on your property, reducing runoff. Upgrading to smart irrigation systems with WaterSense-certified fixtures can further optimize water usage and minimize waste. For all automatic sprinkler systems, be sure they are set to avoid watering during rain and target only your garden and lawn. Drip systems are more efficient, delivering water directly to plant roots.
Choosing the right hardscape materials can influence temperature regulation around your home. Dark concrete absorbs heat, suitable for colder climates, while lighter surfaces reflect heat, keeping the area cooler. Permeable materials like stone or gravel allow rainwater to seep into the ground, replenishing the water table.
Transforming your lawn and garden into a sustainable, efficient, and beautiful space is a rewarding endeavor. By adopting sustainable gardening practices, efficient water management, and thoughtful landscaping, you can create a sanctuary that supports your health and well-being while contributing to a better, greener community. Learn more about gardening and landscaping in my book, Living Green Effortlessly, Simple Choices for a Better Home.
Enjoy the journey of making your outdoor space a true extension of your home, filled with life, beauty, and sustainability.

INTERIORS AND EXTERIORS
Nine Signs That It May Be Time to Rehab Your Concrete Swimming Pool
Aconcrete swimming pool adds immense value to any backyard, offering endless hours of relaxation, entertainment, and exercise. However, over the years, even the most well-built pools can start to show signs of wear and tear. Ignoring these indications can lead to costly repairs down the line and compromise the integrity of your pool. If you notice any of the following signs, it may be time to consider rehabilitating your concrete swimming pool to ensure that it remains safe, functional, and visually appealing.
Cracks and Structural Damage
One of the most obvious signs that your concrete pool needs rehabilitation is the presence of cracks or other structural issues. Over time, exposure to fluctuating temperatures, ground movement, and the weight of water can cause concrete to crack. Small hairline cracks may not be a cause for immediate concern, but larger cracks can indicate a more significant problem, leading to water leakage and further damage if left untreated. If you notice cracks in your pool shell, especially if they are widening or extending, it’s essential to address them promptly.
Leakage
Leakage is a common problem in aging concrete pools and can occur due to various reasons, including cracks in the pool shell, deteriorating plumbing, or faulty seals around fittings and fixtures. While a minor leak may seem inconsequential at first, it can eventually result in significant water loss and may suggest underlying structural issues. If you observe a drop in the water level that can’t be attributed to evaporation, it’s crucial to investigate and repair any leaks as soon as possible to prevent further damage and ensure the pool is functioning properly.
Surface Stains and Discoloration
Over time, the surface of a concrete pool may develop unsightly stains and discoloration that make it appear dirty, even after regular cleaning. Stains can be caused by a multitude of factors such as algae growth, mineral deposits, chemical imbalances, and exposure to sunlight. These blemishes not only detract from the pool’s aesthetic appeal, but can also indicate underlying issues such as poor water circulation, inadequate sanitation, or a deteriorating interior surface.
While minor stains can sometimes be removed through routine cleaning and maintenance, persistent discoloration may be indicative of larger issues, or may require more intensive cleaning or resurfacing to restore your pool’s appearance.
Rough and Uneven Surface
The finish of a concrete pool plays a crucial role in protecting the underlying structure from water damage, chemical corrosion, and wear and tear. However, over time, the finish may deteriorate due to exposure to pool chemicals, UV radiation, weather conditions, or heavy usage. A rough surface can be uncomfortable to walk on and may pose a safety hazard to swimmers. If left unaddressed, a deteriorating finish can accelerate the degradation of the pool structure and compromise its waterproofing properties, leading to leaks and other issues.
Damaged Tiles, Decking, or Coping
Damaged tile, decking, or coping can sometimes be a sign that your concrete swimming pool needs rehabilitation. Over time, harsh weather conditions, pool chemicals, and heavy foot traffic can cause tiles to become cracked, chipped or loose, compromising both the attractiveness and safety of your pool.
Similarly, coping – the capstone or edge material around the perimeter of the pool –and decking can also suffer from wear and tear, including fading, cracking, or deterioration. Not only do damaged tiles, coping, and/or decking detract from the overall appearance of your pool area, but they can
also pose safety hazards such as tripping or sharp edges. Addressing these issues through a pool rehabilitation can involve repairing or replacing damaged tiles, resealing coping joints, or resurfacing decking to restore both the beauty and functionality of your pool and its surroundings.
Antiquated Design or Features
If your concrete pool was built many years ago, it may lack modern design elements and attributes that enhance the general swimming experience. Rehabbing your pool gives you an opportunity to update the overall design and incorporate new features. This can include adding water or fire features, tanning ledges, attached spas, swimup bars, or underwater lighting. Updating the design and features can transform your pool into a more enjoyable and functional space for you and your family to enjoy.
Outdated or Inefficient
Equipment
Another indication that your concrete pool may need rehabilitation is outdated or inefficient equipment, such as pumps, filters, heaters, and lighting. Older equipment may consume more energy, require frequent repairs, or lack the advanced safety features and technology available in modern pool systems. Upgrading to energy-efficient equipment not only reduces operational costs but also enhances the pool’s perfor-
mance, safety, and convenience. Additionally, integrating smart automation systems allows for remote monitoring and control of pool functions, ensuring optimal efficiency and ease of maintenance.
Safety Concerns
Safety should always be a top priority when it comes to owning a swimming pool, especially if you have children, pets, or elderly individuals in your household. Signs of safety concerns in a concrete pool include slippery or uneven surfaces, faulty electrical systems, inadequate fencing or barriers, damaged safety covers, and non-compliance with safety standards and regulations. Rehabilitating your swimming pool to address these issues can help prevent accidents and provide peace of mind.
Constant Repairs
While routine maintenance and occasional repairs are to be expected with any pool, a pattern of frequent or recurring problems may suggest underlying structural or systematic issues that require more comprehensive attention. Continuously patching cracks, fixing leaks, replacing broken tiles, or repairing malfunctioning equipment can quickly become a costly and time-consuming endeavor, not to mention disruptive to your enjoyment of the pool. Moreover, relying on quick fixes to tackle individual concerns without addressing the
Damaged tiles detract from a pool’s aesthetic appearance and may allow water to infiltrate the pool structure, leading to potential leaks and structural damage over time.
root cause can result in further deterioration and compounded problems over time. By opting for a complete pool rehab, you can take a proactive approach to addressing underlying issues comprehensively, restore the integrity of your pool, and minimize the need for future repairs, ultimately saving you time, money, and frustration in the long run.
A concrete swimming pool is a luxurious addition to any home, but like any structure, it requires regular maintenance and occasional rehabilitation to ensure its longevity, performance, and safety. By paying attention to the signs discussed in this article, you can identify when it’s time to rehab your pool and take proactive measures to attend to any issues before they escalate. Investing in the rehabilitation of your concrete pool not only preserves its beauty and functionality, but will also enhance your enjoyment and satisfaction for years to come.

Native Planting Conversions are Solutions for Dull or Problem Landscapes
THOSE AREAS BECOME BEAUTIFUL SELF-MANAGING NATURESCAPES
BY STEVE CALLOWAY
If there is a section of your lawn that needs to be mowed, fertilized and weed killers applied, and after all that is still just ordinary, uninteresting lawn, there is an alternative that is worth considering. Instead, you can convert that part of your lawn to a naturescape meadow, an expanse of native plant varieties that doesn’t require mowing, chemicals or even watering. Create a diverse array of perennial plantings, including beautiful wildflowers that bloom from April through October and come back better year after year. This organic, self-managing meadow eliminates exhaust emissions, air and ground pollution, herbicides and pesticides. And your natural prairie will absorb water and reduce erosion
problems.
The result of this conversion is an ever-changing naturescape that improves your quality of life by attracting birds, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators, attractions that enhance your home’s connection with nature.
mer has worn away to bare dirt where crabgrass and weeds quickly fill in. Instead, you can have creative arrays of bluebells, groundcover ginger, Ohio horsemint, white anemone and other native perennials that will thrive and with just once-a year composting will burst out of the ground into a beautiful variety of colors and shapes year after year. There are also economic benefits: in those areas you have eliminated mowing, fertilizing, weed killers and upkeep. And, real estate professionals will confirm that these plantings increase property values.
If you have wooded borders that are overgrown with honeysuckle, kudzu and other invasive species, you can replace those with attractive native shrubs and flowering trees.
If you have sections of lawn under trees where grass just doesn’t seem to consistently grow, or that are over-exposed to sun where grass burns out, you can convert them to mulched perennial gardens.
You can eliminate the frustration of seeing grass in those areas that may start out looking nice in the spring, but by mid-sum-

Creating the Ultimate Backyard Oasis
by Nature’s Re-Creations
BY GUINEVERE LORENZ
When we had the pleasure of visiting the delightful home of Annette and her son Patrick and family, it became abundantly clear that their backyard transformation was nothing short of magical. With the expert touch of Nature’s Re-Creations, what was once a simple plot of grass has been turned into an enchanting retreat that delights the senses and soothes the soul.
Initially, Patrick and his father, Mark, set out to upgrade their outdoor space with an impressive kitchen feature, complete with a wood-fired pizza oven and two stainless steel grills. It didn’t stop there, however. The idea of a pond was born, and little did they know, it would evolve into something far more spectacular.
In 2012, after many hours of digging and even renting an excavator, Mark suggested they attend The St. Louis Water Garden Society’s Pond-O-Rama pond tour for inspi-
ration. It was there that they discovered the extraordinary work of Chris Siewing and his team at Nature’s Re-Creations. Recognizing the potential to transform their initial idea into a masterpiece, they enlisted Chris to bring their vision to life.
Chris’s plans were nothing short of breathtaking. Over six weeks, the once-ordinary backyard was metamorphosed into an awe-inspiring escape, complete with lush landscaping and impeccable lighting that highlighted every intricate detail of the water feature. The transformation was beyond anything they could have imagined.
Today, the family revels in the serene sounds of water cascading over rocks and the gentle symphony of the waterfall, creating a natural buffer against the noise of nearby traffic. The water feature not only enhances their outdoor experience but also brings the tranquility of nature right into their home. Whether viewed from the family room or enjoyed during backyard gatherings, the water feature has become the heart of their home.
CHRIS SIEWING is owner and president of Nature’s Re-Creations, nationally recognized as a Master Certified Aquascape Contractor, Missouri’s first Water Garden Excellence Member, firstplace winner of the North American Pond and Waterfall Building Competition, and in the elite group of Aquascape Artists of the Year. Nature’s Re-Creations is the area’s leading designer and installer of custom water features.
One of the highlights for Patrick and his family is the wildlife that the water feature attracts, turning their backyard into a lively sanctuary. The beauty and serenity of the space have made it a favorite spot for family gatherings, including three rehearsal dinners and bridal showers.
The maintenance of this beautiful feature is surprisingly minimal. Patrick attests to the ease of upkeep, which involves an annual service by Chris’s dedicated team and occasional cleaning during the year. The family appreciates the company’s proactive approach in scheduling their spring service, ensuring that everything remains in pristine condition.
Perhaps the most sentimental addition to their oasis is the wishing well, a loving tribute to Mark’s fond memories of his grandparents’ backyard. Chris’s thoughtful gesture in creating this nostalgic feature has added a layer of emotional depth to the backyard. The wishing well stands as a poignant reminder of cherished family moments and the enduring bond between generations.
The family’s glowing testimonials speak volumes about the exceptional work of Nature’s Re-Creations. They praise Chris for his patience and professionalism, and commend his team for their dedication and craftsmanship. The transformation of their backyard has not only enhanced their home but has also created a lasting legacy, filled with beauty, tranquility, and treasured memories.
In the words of Patrick, “Chris is amazing in every aspect, and the crew are always professional.” It is evident that Nature’s Re-Creations has crafted more than just a water feature—they've created a sanctuary, a gathering place, and a haven of peace and beauty that will be cherished for generations to come.
For over 27 years they have been committed to high quality design, workmanship and customer satisfaction. Nature’s Re-Creations stays on the cutting edge of technology and installation techniques to continually improve their projects and the environment. To discuss a water feature project, you can contact Chris Siewing at 636-223-2330 or check out their gallery and fill out the contact form at www. Breathe Easier Using Salt Room Therapy
When Clay Juracsik started The St. Louis Salt Room over 10 years ago, it was partially as a therapy for his daughter. She had severe asthma and he saw that it was taking a toll on her health. He was looking for something that could help her and make her less dependent on the drugs she needed to take. Clay had studied halotheraphy and learned of its many benefits, and even traveled to Europe and Russia to visit other salt spas to learn everything he could about them.
Her breathing improved quickly and after several months, she was able to cut the need for her meds by 90%. “Halotherapy has made her lungs much healthier. It made a huge difference. It made me more of a believer than I already was,” Clay said. “She hasn't needed medication in a long time.”
A HISTORY OF BENEFIT
Halotherapy chambers have been popular in Europe and are now seeing popularity in the
United States. Salt has been used for thousands of years to treat a long list of common ailments.
It was discovered in the mid-1800s that people who worked in the salt mines of Poland and surrounding countries had a remarkably low rate of respiratory illnesses. Soon a clinic was placed within one of these salt mines, which is still in operation today. In order to simulate the therapeutic effects within salt mines, spas emulating salt caves were built on the surface, where people would visit routinely to breathe the air which was saturated with beneficial salt particles and negatively-charged ions.
and actually children often experience the greatest results. Salt Therapy is recommended for those who suffer from respiratory ailments like Asthma, Bronchitis, Sinusitis, and even allergies. Many people use it to lower their stress and relieve fatigue and depression. Athletes use it to optimize their breathing and improve circulation.
ST. LOUIS’ FIRST SALT SPA
Recently, engineers created a device called a Halo-generator, which not only simulates the conditions in salt mines, but accelerates the effect. A salt aerosol fills the air with tiny particles, which have been clinically proven to deliver the most optimal results.
FOR ADULTS & CHILDREN
Halotherapy is beneficial to people of all ages,

Improve Your Performance and Enjoyment of Sports
A PERSONAL TRAINER CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
BY BRET KLIETHERMES
Whether you are a “weekend warrior” at golf or tennis, or a serious runner, you may find you have reached a plateau where your game or times aren’t improving as you would like. Or that the weekly activity leaves your muscles more sore than when you were younger, and those extra pounds you’ve put on also aren’t helping your performance.
There is an important step you can take that is guaranteed to improve your performance, and will also make you feel and look better. By adding to your weekend sports just a couple focused training sessions during the week, you can improve your strength, flexibility and balance that can drive improved athletic performance. And being in better shape can also increase your energy, alertness, appearance and enjoyment.
Think about golf, racquet or pickleball. As we get older, we lose muscle mass and flexibility that limit range of motion. Sometimes when you see older players they seem to chop at the ball, instead of having a smooth long stroke that requires greater range of motion. Focused strengthening and stretching routines with a trainer can meaningfully improve your strength, range of motion and balance, for longer drives, more powerful tennis strokes and greater mobility overall. Improving leg muscle strength increases endurance and ability to run greater distances.
But being successful is not just about trying to get more exercise, joining a health club, or buying some miraculous new piece of exercise equipment or dietary supplement. What you really want is expert training that will put you through the specific motions that will improve your performance.
BRET KLIETHERMES is owner of STRONG HUMAN FITNESS LLC, a personal training company that offers Complete Fitness Programs to help his clients reach their personal health and fitness goals. Bret has a Bachelor of Science in Health & Wellness Promotion from Missouri State University, and is a Certified Personal Trainer through The American Council on Exercise.
Strong Human Fitness is located in the Corporate Plaza Building at 14528 South Outer 40 Road and offers a more private alternative to the large box gyms that are often noisy and overcrowded.
Bret offers both private and semi-private training to fit all budgets and schedules. For a no-obligation, no-pressure consultation to discuss your goals, you can call Bret at 314-691-9040, email bret@stronghumanfitness.com or visit www.stronghumanfitness.com.
Most people just don’t have the expertise or discipline to know how to accomplish these goals by themselves. As with any really important endeavor, many things you don’t know can keep you from getting where you want to go. There are techniques to help you get started and to make real progress on a balanced exercise program. These will enable you to see and feel results early in the process, without becoming discouraged or hurting yourself.
An effective coach gives you hands-on supervision, encouragement and also a sense of accountability that make sure you stick with your program in the critical first weeks when you will start to see and feel results. With the right guidance, you very soon get in the groove where the new habits become self-perpetuating and you have the momentum to keep going to achieve your goals.
Does Your Pool Deck Have Uneven Concrete Surfaces?
Shifted concrete slabs look bad and are tripping hazards that can cause injuries.
If your pool deck has a seam that has turned into a step, or repeated cracking, it’s probably caused by a weak soil base or erosion below. The good news is the concrete does not have to be torn out and poured again to fix the problem.
Woods Basement Systems offers the exclusive PolyLevel® process that injects a lightweight polyurethane mix, which expands to fill the void and lift concrete slabs to a level, even position.
We will inspect your pool deck and also concrete walks, patios, steps and driveway, and provide a free quote to have them leveled with PolyLevel.
Fermented Foods: A Delicious Path to Weight Loss and Wellness
Fermented foods have been a staple in diets around the world for centuries, prized for their unique flavors, preservation properties, and numerous health benefits. Beyond their tangy taste and culinary appeal, fermented foods offer a host of benefits that can support weight loss and overall wellness. In this article, we will explore the role of fermented foods in promoting weight loss, their impact on gut health, and how you can incorporate these flavorful delights into your diet for a delicious journey to better health.
The Science Behind Fermented Foods and Weight Loss
Fermented foods are rich in probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that promote a healthy gut microbiome. These probiotics play a key role in supporting digestion, nutrient absorption, and metabolism, all of which are crucial factors in weight management. Research has shown that a healthy gut microbiome is associated with a lower risk of obesity, metabolic disorders, and inflammation – all of which can contribute to weight gain.
Furthermore, fermented foods are often lower in calories and fat compared to their non-fermented counterparts, making them a nutritious and weight-friend-
ly choice. By incorporating fermented foods into your diet, you can not only support your gut health but also potentially aid in weight loss and weight management.
Gut Health and Weight Loss: The Connection
The gut microbiome, comprised of trillions of microorganisms, plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, controlling appetite, and influencing weight. An imbalanced gut microbiome, characterized by an overgrowth of harmful bacteria and a lack of diversity in beneficial bacteria, can lead to weight gain, inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction.
Fermented foods, with their abundance of probiotics, help restore balance to the gut microbiome and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. This, in turn, can enhance digestion, reduce inflammation,
and support weight loss efforts. By nourishing your gut with fermented foods, you are fostering a healthy environment that can optimize your metabolism, regulate appetite, and aid in weight loss.
Incorporating Fermented Foods into Your
Diet
There are a variety of delicious, fermented foods that you can easily incorporate into your daily meals to support weight loss and overall wellness. Here are some popular fermented foods to consider adding to your diet:
1. Yogurt: A classic fermented food, yogurt is rich in probiotics that support gut health and aid in digestion. Opt for plain, unsweetened yogurt to avoid added sugars and maximize the benefits.
2. Kimchi: A spicy Korean staple, kimchi is a fermented cabbage dish that is packed with probiotics, vitamins, and antioxidants. Enjoy kimchi as a flavorful side dish or add it to stir-fries and salads for a tangy kick.
3. Kombucha: A fizzy, fermented tea beverage, kombucha is a refreshing and probiotic-rich drink that can aid in digestion and support gut health. Choose unsweetened varieties to minimize sugar intake.
4. Sauerkraut: A traditional European condiment made from fermented cabbage, sauerkraut is a probiotic powerhouse that can enhance gut health and digestion. Enjoy sauerkraut as a topping for sandwiches, salads, or grilled dishes.
5. Miso: A Japanese staple, miso is a fermented soybean paste that adds depth of flavor to soups, marinades, and dressings. Miso is rich in probiotics, vitamins, and minerals that can support gut health and overall well-being.
6. Tempeh: A fermented soybean product, tempeh is a versatile and protein-rich food that can be used in a variety of dishes, from stir-fries to sandwiches. Tempeh is a source of probiotics, fiber, and nutrients that promote satiety and weight loss. By incorporating a variety of fermented foods into your diet, you can enjoy a delicious way to support weight loss, improve gut health, and enhance overall wellness. Experiment with different fermented foods, flavors, and recipes to find what works best for you and your taste preferences. Remember to prioritize whole, nutrient-dense foods and listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues as you embark on your journey to a healthier, happier you through the power of fermented foods.

Silos become a field of sunflowers
BY JIM WINNERMAN
What do you do with a cluster of three grain silos possibly erected in the early 1900s that are no longer in use and now overgrown and covered with vines? The answer was simple for Karen and Michael Koehneman, the owners of the Sunflower Hill Farm café and event center just outside Defiance, Missouri. Since the silos were alongside the Katy Trail, why not paint the 50-foot-tall concrete block cones with a mural passersby could enjoy.
“The tops of the silos were gone but we wanted to preserve the remaining structures,” Karen says. “I thought a design with sunflowers that incorporated the Missouri River and the scenic vistas in the valley landscape would look nice.”
Karen also wanted the sunflower art to morph from a sunrise on one side of each silo, to a scene depicting the setting sun on the other side.
Kimberly Alsop and Anne Molasky, both St. Louis area artists with experience painting large murals, were awarded the commission to create the “super-size Monets.”
“We budgeted six weeks to paint the silos,” Anne remembers, adding that they painted ten to twelve hours a day to complete the art.
The work was first mapped out on a grid on paper. Then the grid was matched to an existing pattern of support wires that were part of the silo’s structure, and which encircled the towers from top to bottom about 18 inches apart.
Before it was time to get to paint, the vines covering the silos were removed and they were each primed to create a sealed surface that would best preserve the soon-to-appear art.
“We rented a lift with a bucket and a platform where we could stand and paint,” Anne says. “I am not comfortable with heights, but being in control of where the lift would move while we were in the bucket somehow allowed me to overcome my fear.”
While the women had considered using paint brushes, 416 cans of spray paint ended up being the “brush” of choice because the spray was easier to get into the numerous crevices in the surface of the silos..
One challenge in painting the silos is that they curve, so the women could not see more than two feet beyond where they were painting.
Another challenge was the persistent presence of insects. “We would just have to gently move the spiders and bugs out of the way, and apologize to them when we did,” Kimberly says.
“I did see one butterfly flutter by and land on one of the sunflower leaves as we painted,” Anne recalls.

Once the mural was complete the final touch was applying a coat of heavy-duty sealer to protect the paint from fading due to the constant exposure to weather.
When finished, the silos had been entirely painted with sunflowers in the foreground, giving way to art depicting the nearby Missouri River and farm fields in the upper third of each silo. As a passerby walks around the base of the silos the scene transitions from morning to dusk, just as Karen had envisioned.
In addition to being proud of the finished product, the women were delighted at the attention their work received while it was in progress. “As people would pass riding along the Katy Trail, they would yell up greetings like ‘love it,’ and ‘this makes my day,’” Kimberly recalls. “One person said it ‘made my daily commute really special.’”
They even discovered some people were driving for an hour just to see the silos. “It seems like we have created a landmark, a destination,” Anne says.
The fun they had painting the silos and the attention they have received has Anne and Kimberly searching for additional large art projects along the Katy Trail, whether it be silos, or barns, or anything else suitable to become an outdoor canvas on a grand scale. “It would be nice to add art and sculpture along the entire 237-mile length of the route,” Anne says.

Duke’s BBQ Shack Celebrates True Character and Flavor
Duke’s BBQ Shack in Wentzville, Missouri is not your average roadside BBQ joint. Named after owner Peter Venezia’s late father, Duke (pictured below), this restaurant is a tribute to a man who lived life to the fullest. Duke’s adventurous spirit and love for good food are evident in every aspect of the restaurant, from the menu to the décor. His spirit is palpable in the dining room where a prominent portrait of him in his iconic big hat commands attention. “He was a true cowboy at heart,” Peter fondly recalls.
Peter Venezia (pictured to the right of the Fire Chief gas pump above) a seasoned restaurateur with a successful track record, was inspired to open Duke’s BBQ Shack after caring for his father during his final days. The restaurant’s concept was born out of a desire to honor Duke’s memory and share his love for great BBQ with the community. With Chef and Pitmaster Eric
Pierre on board, the duo set out to create a unique dining experience that would pay homage to Duke’s legacy.
The menu at Duke’s BBQ Shack is a reflection of Duke’s eclectic tastes and sense of adventure. The Duke Platter, a customer favorite, features a generous serving of brisket, pork, chicken, ribs, two sides, and a soft drink. The sandwich selection includes mouthwatering options like the Wet Sticky, The Dirty Bird, and The Dirty Mustache all served on buns branded with the restaurant’s beloved pig logo. For dessert guests can indulge in house-made treats like Carrot Cake Cupcakes and Gooey Butter Cakes in a variety of flavors such as the Classic, Oreo Crumb, Chocolate Chip and Peanut Butter Cup.
Peter Venezia takes pride in sourcing high-quality ingredients for his dishes, and their Wagyu beef offerings add a touch of luxury to the menu. Prized for its rich, marbled flavor, this promises premium beef on each of the three offerings. Choose from The Big Doobler, stacked high with double Kobe

patties, cheese, pickle, lettuce, tomato and onion with Doobler sauce; The Frisco Melt, a Wagyu beef burger on grilled Texas toast with melted American & provel cheese and Doobler sauce; or the Wagyu Cheesesteak, with sliced Wagyu beef, provel cheese, peppers and onions. Duke’s BBQ Shack buys two Wagyu cows per week from a local farm, Marie’s River Wagyu. What sets Duke’s BBQ Shack apart from other BBQ joints in the area is not just the delicious food, but also the unique atmosphere and sense of community that Peter and his team have cultivated. The restaurant has become a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, with lines out the door and catering jobs almost daily. Duke’s BBQ Shack has also become a go-to catering source for local businesses and wedding venues in the area, with customers still raving about the food years after their events.
Peter Venezia takes great pride in the success of Duke’s BBQ Shack and the impact it has had on the community. The restaurant’s strong brand presence and loyal following are a testament to the hard work and dedication that Peter and his team have put into creating a one-of-a-kind dining experience. Duke’s BBQ Shack is more than just a restaurant – it’s a celebration of family, good food, and the spirit of adventure.
So, the next time you find yourself in Wentzville, Missouri, be sure to stop by Duke’s BBQ Shack under the Water Tower in Historic Downtown. Murderous Row
BY JOHN DRAKE ROBINSON
“Hello, Bob.”
It was the last thing Bob Ford heard. As he turned, two blasts from a shotgun tore through his throat, “carried his gold collar-button out through the back of his neck,” said Cy Warman, editor of the Creede, Colorado Daily Chronicle.
Outlaw Robert Newton Ford never tried to duck his reputation. In fact, he profited by posing for photographs. He and brother Charlie reenacted the murder of the world’s most famous outlaw in a stage play called The Brother’s Vow; or the Bandit’s Revenge. The pair thought they would become rich. But the play soon fizzled. Bob migrated west to capitalize on the Colorado mining boom. When Bob’s saloon in Creede burned to the ground, he opened a tent saloon called the Leadville Dance Hall. On June 8, 1892, Edward O’Kelly entered the tent and killed him.
the same day they were convicted and sentenced. Always on the run from vengeance, Charlie couldn’t stand the shame, and soon after their play ended he committed suicide. He’s buried in Richmond Cemetery too.
A few blocks away, Pioneer Cemetery holds the bones of Oliver Cowdery, the main scribe for the Book of Mormon, and one of three witnesses who said he saw the sacred gold plates an angel delivered to Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church.
In the same Pioneer Cemetery lies the body of the Devil, or so thought Union
later, retired outlaw Cole Younger reburied Anderson in Pioneer Cemetery in a Confederate military ceremony.
Cemetery searches make me hungry. We started combing the hillsides for some local fare. People in Richmond and Ray County are proud of the food that made them famous: a fungus that looks like a pointy sponge. Fifty billion morel mushrooms hid in plain sight in the warm damp hillsides around Ray County, but I’ll be damned if I could find one, even though some sprout to the size of the Travelocity gnome. Plus, my shotgun kept jamming, so I’m not sure what I would’ve done had I seen one. They sure are good eatin’, though. Better than steak. More expensive, too.
We gave up hunting and rolled back onto the highway to Excelsior Springs. It’s hard to overlook Ray’s Diner. On Broadway downtown, Ray’s low-slung exterior shouts the name “Ray’s Famous HamburgerS” stretched across the diner’s brow in mismatched hand-lettered fonts over an awning that screams candy cane colors.
Ford was buried in Colorado, but his body later was moved home to Richmond Cemetery, where he lies under the epitaph, “The man who shot Jesse James.” Bob and brother Charlie—who rode with the James Gang during the Blue Cut train robbery—had been sentenced to hang for the murder of Jesse James. Both were pardoned by Governor Thomas Crittenden on
sympathizers who were terrorized by Bill Anderson. “Bloody Bill” earned his nickname from a murderous rampage through Missouri during the Civil War, including a slaughter of Union forces called the Centralia Massacre. After Centralia, Union cavalry focused on finding Anderson. They tracked him down near Orrick, Missouri and killed him, paraded his body through Richmond, photographed his corpse, then buried him in a field. Nearly forty-five years

Franchising Offers Abundant Opportunities to Find Your Perfect Business Fit
BY DICK MUELLER
The world of franchises is generally thought of as auto dealerships, sports team ownership and major brand restaurant chains. But the truth is that there is a franchise opportunity in nearly every business segment that you can think of. And most of them are a lot more affordable than those you know best.
Franchising is a way for the franchisor to expand their business and distribute goods and services by engaging others through a licensing relationship. The franchise agreement specifies the products and services that will be offered by the franchisee under the trademark and trade name of the franchisor.
The value of a franchise is determined by the value of the franchisor’s brands, the support they provide to franchisees, how the franchisees meet their obligations to deliver the products and services following the system’s brand standards and, very importantly, the relationship the franchisor has with their franchisees.
What are your passions and skills?
Consider industries you're passionate about and possess skills for. Do you enjoy working with people? Do you have a knack for sales or operations? Aligning your interests with the business will make the work more enjoyable and leverage your strengths. Whether your interest lies in transforming

The scents of September sycamores and campfires, forest fires and kitchen fires. His stories serve up tastes and touches and sounds you can’t coax from a tweet. You probably shouldn’t read this during church.

Don’t Respond to Pop-Ups or Email Scams Claiming Your Computer Has Problems!
BY DEDE CATSAVIS
I’ve received a lot of calls where the client tells me they may have been scammed. “There was a pop-up from Microsoft (or other legit company), that said my computer is infected with Trojan viruses and has been compromised, and I need to call this “888” phone number immediately to avoid losing all data.”
Typically, the client has already called the bogus phone number and clicked on the link sent to them by the scammer, allowing them remote control of the client’s computer and ‘fake’ error messages to make things seem
dire. Or worse—capture bank and credit card passwords. Then, of course, they extort money (or account numbers) to ‘fix’ the problems. None of this is legit.
Then a Google search for Microsoft, HP, AT&T, Brother, etc. can yield first results that are ‘sponsored’ by scammers. If you call these phone numbers, things go downhill from there. Do not allow anyone to remote into your computer unless you know or trust them. People (typically elderly) get scammed
by these unscrupulous companies and it’s rampant, pervasive, and just disheartening. To avoid this, when you see a pop-up or have a question, call a legit company like Computer Tutors for help. We’ve seen all the scams and bailed clients out both before and, sadly, sometimes after they’ve been scammed.
If you have allowed someone to remote into your computer, turn it off asap and call me or someone who can remove the ‘remote-in’ software. Otherwise, you have given the scammer free total access. If you have already been compromised, we will back up your data and ensure that you are free from any intrusions. Also, we do a clean and tune and scan for malware, viruses and make sure all your software is up to date, the best way to stay secure.
COMPUTER TUTORS is a local, woman-owned small business founded in 1997.
DEDE CATSAVIS is the founder and owner. For 25 years they have provided computer services to thousands of satisfied, happy customers. Computer Tutors works on Windows and MAC computers, sets up home networks, eliminates viruses and also will help with any of your other electronic devices.
