he trouble began over a box of Rice Krispies. My wife and I were meandering down the cereal aisle on what seemed like a pleasant venture. I picked up a large box of Rice Krispies and dropped it into our cart. “You’re not really going to get that, are you?” she said. I looked around. Who said that, my mother? Bawling me out? “Sure,” I said, fearing the pending conflict. “It’s one of my favorite cereals.” She handed the box back to me. “There is no nutritional value in that. Read the ingredients.” That was the beginning of my descent into the Seven Circles of Health. I no longer could be content with eating something because it tasted good, or even because it wasn’t loaded with fat, salt or sugar. No, there was more to eating than that. Ingredients needed to be examined; nutritional value demanded attention. The cereal aisle is a graphic example of good and evil. On one side, the aforementioned Rice Krispies sits next to Corn Flakes, Wheaties, Cap’n Crunch, and bags of puffed rice for 99 cents. On the other side, Wholesome Heaven. Cereals made from a global assortment of nuts, grains, seeds, rare plants, clusters of dried fruits and even an occasional sprinkling of sea salt. This all leads me to the conclusion that sadists have been put in charge of our breakfasts. They want to see how many weird things they can combine and sell as “healthy.” I eventually surrendered and began a steady regimen of cereals with “natural,” “whole-

some,” and even “organic” displayed on the boxes. But breakfast wasn’t through with me. Cereal needs milk. Have you looked in the so-called “milk” section lately? I don’t know whatever happened to just plain milk. The choice used to be simple: whole, 2%, 1%, fat free (aka skim, replaced by “fat free”) and chocolate. But old-fashioned milk from cows - so I’ve been told - isn’t good for me. Now there’s Almond Milk. We needed some Almond Milk recently, to go with my all-natural, non-GMO, mainly organic cereal. I went to the ill-named “dairy case” at the store. A half hour later I was still standing there, trying to figure out which form of milk I should buy. Yes, Almond Milk. But vanilla flavored? Regular?

Sweetened or unsweetened? And one that sounded mysterious: Almond Milk with a “hint of honey.” I finally opted for sweetened vanilla. Taste still matters, right? But milk options weren’t through with me. As I reached for the Almond, I noticed - sitting right next to it - Soy Milk. I wondered if that was better for me than Almond. I looked at the ingredients. No clue there. As I replaced the carton, I saw a shelf filled with Rice Milk. Then Coconut Milk. And Cashew Milk. Milk, I finally realized, was no longer a product. It was a category, an industry, a marketing scam foisted on a gullible public in search of The Fountain of Youth. I returned to the vanilla Almond Milk and read it closely. 80 calories. NonGMO, verified. I wondered who verifies these things. What cinched the deal were the following lines: “Free of dairy, soy, lactose, cholesterol, peanuts, casein, glue, eggs, saturated fat and MSG. 50% more calcium than dairy milk.” Now how can you beat that? I felt more vital just holding that carton. Even virile. I’ll be honest with you. I have no idea what GMO means, besides genetically modified organism. It sounds like a new Spielberg movie. I also don’t understand why “organic” is such a hot button these days. Especially on something like bananas. I don’t eat the peels anyway, so does it really matter? Then there’s gluten. I don’t even like the sound of that word. Sounds like someone you don’t want to be around. Anyway, I’m happy now with my cereal and milk resolved. I have conquered the first two Circles of Health. All that remain are lunch, snacks, dinner, dessert, and drinks. I’ll eventually get there.

Damage to homes and businesses is not always obvious, and may not be easily detected by the average homeowner – especially high up on the roof. Typical damage that can occur includes impact holes, tattered or missing shingles, denting on a vent cap or gutter downspout, torn window screens or dented fins on an air conditioning unit. Compromised shingles can reduce their useful life and expose cracks where water

can penetrate. This makes the roof vulnerable to future leaks and more severe exterior and interior damage. If this happens, the roof should be completely replaced, since there are very likely other areas where the damage is not as obvious. Damage to gutters and air conditioning units can reduce their function and lead to further problems. IMPORTANCE OF A SECOND OPINION

To determine damage, insurance companies will send an inspector to your home. If the inspector misses these signs of damage, claims may be denied or limited to only what they have seen. It is important to have an expert “second opinion” in the event the

STUCCO

T WO FRIE NDS’ EXPE RIE NCE

One couple lived in an older home nearby that he had always admired. And his sister and her husband had a condominium at Lake of the Ozarks with a lot of exterior cedar siding that previously had required repainting every few years. What these friends had in common was that instead of having to paint on regular basis, they had discovered a better solution that is warrantied for 25 years. It is a different product and a different process for exterior finishes, a very durable ceramic coating called Rhino Shield. Chris really liked the idea of not having to paint his home again, and he found the warranty very appealing. So he called Rhino Shield for an inspection and estimate. He was impressed by their comprehensive approach to not just coating, but fully protecting his home. THE RHINO SHIE LD DIFFE RE NCE

Once they started the job, Chris really gained an appreciation of the Rhino Shield difference. First they completely power-washed the exterior, replacing boards as needed. He liked that he didn’t have to separately hire a carpenter to do repairs

needed. They then coated every crack with a 60-year elastomeric caulk. They thoroughly masked all of the stone surfaces before applying an adhesive prime sealer to the stucco that waterproofs and also bonds to the coats of durable ceramic finish. Chris said that when the job was finished, the home looked brand new. He never knew that painted stucco could look that good. There is a clean crisp vibrancy to the finish, a thicker, richer look than paint. He learned that the dry film thickness of Rhino Shield is 8-10 times thicker than typical paint. Chris has had lots of compliments from friends and neighbors on the appearance. As it turned out, Chris and his family moved from that home just a few years later, so they personally didn’t get the full benefit of the 25year warranty. However, when they sold their home, not only did it still look great, but they found that the transferable Rhino Shield warranty was an impressive selling point.

C

hris Berry and his family had lived in the stucco and stone home they built in Sunset Hills about 11 or 12 years when it again came time to paint the exterior. As he was planning to have the job done, Chris learned from some good friends about an alternative to painting that they encouraged him to consider.

&

T WO OF HIS HOM E S

They moved to a townhome complex nearby, and soon Chris was recruited to join the homeowners’ board. One immediate project they faced was the need to restore the exteriors of their Tudor style buildings. They had been thinking about adding siding, but were concerned about the cost. Chris suggested that they consider Rhino Shield. The other board members had seen his previous home and liked the look and quality of the job. So they got bids on painting, siding and Rhino Shield. The other board members decided not to use siding, and they really liked being able to get out of the cycle of repainting every few years. They agreed that Rhino Shield would be a sound investment, and hired them to do the exterior coating. Chris was especially pleased that the same crew that had worked at his house would be doing the work on the townhomes. He had found them to be very methodical, respectful and responsive to his requests. That project is now completed. When it’s time for an exterior finish for your home that will really last, you can call the professionals at Rhino Shield for a free inspection and estimate at 877-257-4466. They are rated A+ with the Better Business Bureau, and consistently win Super Service awards locally and nationally. You can visit their website 87725RHINO.com for videos, photos and testimonials from other homeowners in this area who have discovered the difference Rhino Shield makes on their homes and also commercial properties.

water feature isn’t just landscaping, it is a way of life. A well-designed water feature offers increasing pleasure as it matures. Over the years, you will notice changes in its appearance. It is, after all, a living thing. It evolves with the seasons, attracts birds and butterflies and it becomes a calming retreat from the stresses of everyday life. A well-designed water feature is planned to be interacted with. Not just outside, but from inside the house as well. This usually requires placing the feature so it is visible from inside the house, and directing the waterfall toward the house as well. By doing this, you will not only offer a line of sight, but it will throw the pleasing sounds toward the windows, so you can be serenaded by cascading water. It is important to keep your water garden to scale without going overboard. Homeowners are drawn to the idea of large waterfalls in their backyard, but if not sized properly, they can look unnatural instead of blending into the landscape. You want to create something that appears to have been placed there by Mother Nature herself. This can be a challenge when locating the pond close to the house. In most cases, it requires working against the natural grade of the lot, using retaining walls and berms to get the waterfall to the proper height. But even a minimal elevation change can produce beautiful waterfalls that are to scale with the surrounding landscape.

The pondless waterfall is one of the fastest growing options in water features today. It provides a natural-looking waterfall without a visible body of water.  It offers all the sounds of natural falls, and allows for many varieties of plants along the stream sections to adorn the water garden.  You can have a natural looking feature, without having to worry about the safety of an open body of water or pond.  This makes these great for young children, front yards or commercial settings. A natural looking pond will use different shapes and sizes of rock. To better integrate your feature into the natural surroundings, a few extra boulders or outcropping stones in the existing landscape provide good transition between the pond and your yard. The use of rock in your supporting landscape also allows you to create level beds for tall, vertical accents such as trees and shrubs. It is important in the planning phase to consider that when installing a water garden, you get two features - daytime and nighttime. Especially with a pond, when it is lit up at night, you can view your fish and other underwater features in a whole different way. Some people mostly enjoy their ponds at night because they work during daytime hours. If you want to be able to enjoy your pond at night, then you want to consider adding underwater lights to your design. Underwater lights are great for adding that extra “wow” factor to your backyard when you are entertaining friends and family.

reat rooms, with their large windows and beautiful views, provide a wonderful open feeling and their large windows provide great views of the outdoors. For many homeowners the great room was the feature that convinced them to purchase their home, and is the room they enjoy the most. However, many homeowners with great rooms complain about excessive heat from the sun and glare they experience during hours of direct sunlight. And the problem is not only during warm weather months. During winter the sun is actually lower in the sky, meaning that it shines more directly into the great room. Now there is a new generation of exterior shading products that dramatically reduce heat and glare, especially in great rooms, without requiring a change to the beauty of the interior craftsmanship. These solar screens shade from the outside. If you can

stop the harmful rays from passing through your window with an outdoor solar screen, you will eliminate the inside greenhouse effect which captures and retains the excessive indoor heat. Outdoor Shade is so much more effective than the best windows, tinting, or blinds. You will stop the heat, stop the glare and stop the fading. GREAT ROOM SOLAR SCREENS

cover windows from the outside, while still permitting light to come through, maintaining outdoor views. They are motorized and easy to operate with either a hand-held remote control or a wall-mounted remote control. When the sun is not blazing through the window, you can simply retract the solar screen into its discreet, overhead cassette. The smaller screens are fully wind resistant and the larger ones are rated for winds of 40 miles per hour (and winds seldom exceed 40 mph on sunny days). Adding to the convenience is the option

B A L LW I N 10’ X 9’

of having a sun sensor that automatically extends the solar screen during times of intense sunlight and then retracts the solar screen during dim lighting or cloudy conditions. You can reduce air conditioning and fading of furnishings and woodwork by blocking undesirable heat and ultra-violet light. During cooler weather you can retract the screens to allow the warmth of the sun to enter your home, keeping your heating costs down. For more information on this new generation of Great Room Glory, you can contact Shade Your World. Entering their 26th summer of business, this company has provided more retractable awnings than any other company in this area, as well as a full range of outdoor shading products. Their mission is to Shade Your World and Brighten Your Day. Each product is custom designed to your individual specifications and will be built and installed within three weeks. Now you can shade your windows like never before. hese are unsightly and also tripping hazards that could cause injuries. You may have tilting concrete steps or sidewalks, driveways or patios where a seam has turned into a step, or repeated cracking in sections of concrete slabs. These problems are often the result of a shifting or a weak soil base or erosion. In the past, contractors relied upon mud jacking or slab jacking to level concrete that had settled over time. This involves pumping concrete slurry under the settled slab to raise it, hoping that the settlement won’t continue. But that requires large holes in the concrete - about the diameter of a soda can. It can take an entire day to cure and the mixture itself is heavy – about 100 pounds per cubic foot, which can lead to further sinking. There is now a great alternative called PolyLEVEL™, which uses a lightweight polyurethane mix that expands to fill the void beneath sunken concrete. This not only results in a solution that lasts longer, but also it looks better because it is less destructive to the applied surface. PolyLEVEL requires a much smaller hole – about the diameter of a penny, cures in 15 minutes and weighs much less – about two pounds per cubic foot. It lifts concrete slabs to a level position with less weight and disruption than the legacy mud jacking or slab jacking process. The result is a safe, secure and level concrete slab. In the St. Louis area, Woods Basement Systems is the authorized contractor for PolyLEVEL concrete lifting. They will inspect your concrete walk, steps, pool deck, patio or driveway and provide an estimate to have your sunken concrete slab lifted with PolyLEVEL. To meet with one of their concrete repair experts, you can call them at 866-735-1890 or learn more at www.betterbasementvalue.com.

O

ne of the pleasures of the warm weather months in St. Louis is seeing graceful, colorful butterflies fluttering across your yard. If you enjoy these visits, you can attract a bountiful number of the largest and most beautiful butterflies common to our area, the monarch and swallowtail. Two types of plants are essential for butterfly life. Host plants have leaves that butterfly caterpillars feed on and where they form their chrysalis, or pupa. Nectar plants provide butterflies with nourishment. The monarch butterfly is the only insect that migrates to a warmer climate 2,500 miles away each year. Monarchs arrive here in mid-summer looking for food, lay their eggs, and in a few days caterpillars emerge. The butterflies migrate to Mexico in October to hibernate in oyamel fir trees there. The favored host plant of monarch caterpillars is swamp milkweed. Their preferred nectar sources are butterfly milkweed and whorled milkweed.

By having these plants in your garden, you can fulfill the lifecycle of monarchs, and they will come back to your yard year after year. Swallowtail butterflies are active here from April through October, and do not migrate. All swallowtail species found in Missouri hibernate as pupa, which lays dormant through the winter. The caterpillar emerges in spring and feeds on leaves of their favored host plants – zizia or aurea. Plum or cherry trees are hosts for tiger swallowtails. The favored nectar plants of swallowtails are golden Alexander, a low-growing ornamental with yellow cone-shaped flowers in late spring and early summer. Other swallowtail nectar sources include liatris, black-eyed Susan, purple coneflower Ansonia, asters and penstemon, a flowering plant in a variety of colors that attracts hummingbirds as well. By selecting these attractive native perennials, you will have colorful foliage and also plenty of butterflies visiting throughout the growing season.

Keeping Wood Roofs Beautiful

PERIODIC CLEANING AND T R E AT M E N T P R E S E R V E S A N D PROTECTS

N

o other exterior building material compares with wood for its warm, natural look, resilience and versatility. Cedar shake roofs, oak or pine log or cedar walls, down to redwood decks, a wood home has a distinctive look that improves with age. However, to keep wood exteriors looking their best and prevent deterioration that can lead to costly repairs, it’s important to periodically treat wood surfaces that start to dull or darken with mold, show signs of mildew or have lost protection from the elements. Wood surfaces that are unprotected degrade from exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun. These harmful rays turn bare wood dark, dull and uneven in color. Rain penetrates the wood, causing it to swell. Then blistering heat from the sun dries it. This cycle can cause wood to warp, splinter and crack. Moisture also can make cedar and other woods conducive to mold and mildew. Unlike most other building materials, however, wood exteriors can be restored and maintained through proper care and treatment. Preserving wood protects it from moisture and sunlight, and helps it last twice, even three times as long. This extended life makes cedar roofs, wood siding and decks cost-effective building solutions. The experts at Aspen Touch Cedar Restoration & Installation have more than 25 years of experience in preserving, repairing and replacing wood roofs, natural wood siding and decks on St. Louis’s finest homes. Their restoration process uses a high-pressure wash to remove algae, moss and lichen, returning wood to its natural color. Shingles are repaired, replaced and nailed as needed. Professional Landscape and Architectural Lighting: How to achieve the best results.

O

nce you have decided to add the beauty, safety and security of landscape lighting to your home, the next decision is selecting the company that will provide you with the best results and the best value. Here are some considerations for making that choice. First, it is important to select a provider that is really focused on landscape lighting. You can find sprinkler companies, landscapers and others who offer outdoor lighting as a sideline or to fill in months when they are not busy. But a dedicated landscape lighting company brings significant advantages. An experienced landscape lighting professional knows how to artfully showcase trees and plantings as well as the architectural features of your home, without glare or uneven illumination. The company you select should employ their own designers, installers and service personnel for maintaining your system.

Ask about the equipment they use – you want fixtures that will really stand up to harsh weather conditions, a heavy-duty transformer that will provide balanced illumination and long life, with options for automated controls and energy savings. The most experienced outdoor lighting provider in the St. Louis area is Jeff Mitchell Landscape Lighting. Since 1997 they have installed and maintained lighting systems at many of the finest homes and most visible public attractions in the St. Louis area. Their fixtures are made exclusively with corrosion-resistant materials such as hand-spun copper and cast brass. They will stand up for years in harsh outdoor settings where rain, fertilizers and sun would destroy other materials. Jeff Mitchell Lighting is leading the way with premium halogen lights in fixtures that use a fraction of the energy of line voltage systems, saving their clients as much as 75% in energy costs. Residential energy expense for their halogen lighting installations typically range around $10 per month, depending on the number of lights.

They use commercial grade multiple-volt transformers to ensure perfectly balanced illumination, and their lighting control automation allows you to set the system once and never change it again. They take pride in prompt, capable service to their customers, years after the initial installation. Following free maintenance for 12 months after your system is installed, they offer ongoing and very cost-effective maintenance programs where the lighting system is completely checked out and bulbs replaced as needed. Now that you have a basic understanding of what to expect, ask satisfied neighbors who provided and services their outdoor lighting, and check their references. Chances are that those who are most satisfied use Jeff Mitchell Lighting. You can learn more about them and see a gallery of their installations at www. jeff-mitchell-lighting.com. If you would like to schedule a complimentary design consultation or need more information, you can call Jeff Mitchell Lighting any time at 314-665-2500. TS8

ith each of the great new technologies for your home, you also get individual remote controls and more apps for your smartphone provided by each technology. To control your home security, thermostat, lighting, pool and home entertainment, a homeowner already has five or more separate remotes or apps. As you update, add systems for your home, or make plans for technology in a new home, there are several things to consider. Clearly you will want durable systems with quality installation and maintenance availability for years to come. However, adding these new automation options doesn’t have to mean adding more remotes and confusing new controls. Our company, The SOHO Shop, works with the innovative Control4 technology to integrate all of your home functions into one smartphone application. Because Control4 can join over 7,500 individual products from hundreds of different manufacturers, homeowners have a greater choice in the technologies that they can integrate into their home, so it feels more like a technology renovation rather than a complete overhaul as each one integrates seamlessly into your Control4 system. Control4 performs functions as simple as playing home music and as complicated as pool and spa temperature control. Automation can simplify the controls in a home, orchestrate the grand complexity of a home theatre or prepare a company with a business boardroom.

The combinations are endless, and so is the service. With Control4 on your smartphone, you have control while at home or away. We established The SOHO Shop to serve homeowners with the latest technologies to make life easier and overall more enjoyable. hen Tom and Barb Parsons moved into their newly constructed home in O’Fallon, MO, they always planned to complete the living experience of their new home through the addition of comfortable and inviting outdoor living spaces. Focusing on how they wanted to enjoy their new setting and extend their outdoor season, it was important for them to first live in their new home to give time and attention to planning their outdoor oasis. Tom and Barb were looking for a builder to help design the outdoor space that would provide the function and quality they wanted. The Parsons found Heartlands Building Company through friends whose outdoor room Heartlands designed and built, and they loved the level of craftsmanship, attention to detail and the seamless flow with their existing home. They called several references and other friends that had used Heartlands, and everyone had wonderful things to say about their project and experience with the Heartlands team. Details were very important to them. They were able to talk through questions, concerns and needs with Adam Twellman, one of the owners, and the design team. “Heartlands exceeded our expectations by giving us access and input as the project was progressing. When questions arose,

Adam was available, and we met to discuss our options. It was obvious to us that he cared how our project turned out,” Barb recalled. Barb continued, “Our experience with Heartlands was excellent and the Heartlands team was friendly, polite and respectful in answering all of our questions.” Jake Halloran, co-owner, explained “As a design build firm, it is important to listen and translate the needs and wants of our customers to a design outline and eventually construction plans.” Tom commented, “It is really hard to pick one part of our new outdoor oasis that is our favorite. We love the outdoor grilling area and how it flows to the inside and the screened-in room. The finish of the screened-in room exceeded our expectations and looks beautiful from inside the house and in the room itself.” Design elements important to the Parsons included being able to walk from the house into the screened-in room under the cover of a roof thus staying out of the elements, maintaining an open view, sun control and privacy; decorative stamped concrete blending with the décor of their home and outdoor room and accent lighting highlighting the grilling area, staircase and patio areas. Also, the sizing or better said “right sizing” the outdoor room, grilling area, patio and flow to the front yard were important and evaluated based on how they plan to use the area and entertain family and friends. Tom exclaimed, “Our screened-in room

is truly an extension of our indoor space and a wonderful setting where we enjoy a morning cup of coffee to an evening dinner direct from the nearby grilling area. What a wonderful multipurpose area.” Barb continued, “Everyone that has seen our outdoor living space loves it and marveled at its beauty, and we have Heartlands to thank! We most certainly would recommend them to family and friends that are looking to improve their home with quality and luxury.” These outdoor retreats are constructed for frequent high traffic use, and, to be worry-free long after completion, Heartlands uses high quality and durable exterior rated products. This passion for quality is shared by the Heartlands team and co-owners Larry Brost, Jake Halloran, Adam Twellman, and Dick O’Brien. Heartlands Building Company has enhanced many of St. Louis County and surroundings’ finest homes and will work closely with you to develop a design, work plan and a fixed price for your dream project. You can call Heartlands for a free at-home consultation or an appointment at their showroom in Chesterfield Valley at 636-728-0003. Stone and Tile Floors Looking Dull? H AV E U G LY G R O U T ?

ost stone or tile damage can be corrected. Whether it’s dull, stained, suffering water spots, cracks or chips, the problem can be addressed. A true stone professional will work with you to assess the root cause and to formulate a strategy to avoid a recurrence. For the stone or tile surfaces in your home, it makes sense to contact a local specialist to discuss what can be done to restore them, and how to maintain them day-to-day. A brief dialog can extend the life of your stone and tile and save you from costly errors. The good news is that most problems are repairable and cost substantially less than replacement. Proper selection and application of a sealer can reduce or prevent damage from stains and water. A ColorSeal treatment of your sanded grout can not only restore your original grout color but also topically seal it to better resist future stains. Many glass and tile cleaners will actually dissolve grout, leaving a rough spot. Fortunately, even this can be repaired. Grout repair and sealing are part of the repair and restoration process. Experienced stone and tile craftsmen can provide pointers on how to maintain your stone and tile surfaces to keep them looking like the day they were installed. Your ceramic, porcelain, marble, granite, terrazzo, limestone or travertine will look new when your great-grandchildren come to visit generations from now. Don’t give up on your stone, tile or grout. For expert advice and restoration, you can call the professionals at MARBLELIFE-Groutmasters at 1-888-254-9488 or visit their website at www.marblelife-stlouis.com.

If Your Home is Settling, Don’t Panic.

U

H O M E

R E M O D E L I N G

nderstand the causes of foundation settlement, and what you can do about it. Foundation problems can affect your home’s safety, appearance, and value. If you have wall or floor cracks, bowing walls or doors and windows that don’t close as they should, these are signs that your home may be settling.

CLM

28

T YPES OF HOME SET TLING

There are three types of settling in our area: Uniform settling is when the whole structure settles as one unit without damages occurring. Tipping is when one side of the structure remains stable and while another portion of the home does settle. Differential settling occurs between two cracks in vertical foundation walls, which causes the most damage and need for repair. WHAT CAUSES SET TLE ME NT ?

Settlement is the movement your home experiences when the soil below can no longer support the weight of your home. Most likely this is caused by changes in the soil below: DRYING AND SHRINKING OF SOIL

After long droughts, clay soil dries out and shrinks. This creates empty space for your house to settle in. Also, tree root systems can draw moisture from the soil, causing it to shrink around the house. St. Louis

County and nearly all of St. Charles County have experienced severe drought this winter, causing settling problems in many communities. WET TING AND SOF TE NING OF SOIL

In heavy rain and flood conditions, clay soil gets wet, holds water and becomes very soft and weak. This can cause your home to shift or sink into it. Where there is poor drainage next to your home, soil can absorb water and weaken. COMPRESSION OF POORLY COMPAC TE D FILL SOIL

A common practice when developing building lots is removing soil from hilltops and placing it in valleys to create flat, buildable lots. If this fill soil is not well compacted, it can compress under the weight of the home, causing settlement. Even if you haven’t seen any changes in your home recently, more settlement may occur. The constant cycle of wet and dry periods means that soil goes through changes and settlement in a home is not over unless steps are taken to fix the problem. SOLUTIONS THAT WORK

The most effective way to fix a settling home is to pier it.

Steel push piers are driven deep into the soil to bedrock or another stable soil layer. They can be installed from the exterior or interior of your home and are used to lift your home back toward its original position, often closing cracks and improving the operation of doors and windows. The solution is quick, and the problem is solved once and for all. On lighter structures such as stoops or decks, a solution such as a helical pier or screw pile may be more effective because the structure may not be heavy enough to drive push piers to a sufficient depth. If you see cracks in walls or floor, inside or out, or doors or windows that don’t close as they should, don’t delay doing something about it. These could be signs of settlement, and they will get worse if you ignore them. You can call Woods Basement Systems, the highest-rated, most reviewed contractor in their industry, for a free inspection. If your foundation is cracked, buckling, or has other damage, their experts can restore your home to safe, functional condition. You can call Woods Basement Systems at 866-735-1890, or learn more at www.betterbasementvalue.com.

The Most Advertised Windows May Not Be the Best Choice for Your Home

T

here are a few window brands you see very widely advertised. But did you know that there are over 900 different brands of windows and glass doors available for homes and businesses? And a lot of those actually have better energy ratings and better warranties than some of the best-known brands. Because windows should last a long time, when it’s time to replace them it’s important that you make the right decision, so that you will be satisfied for a long time. Is the right choice for your home wood framed windows? Vinyl windows? Double-hung, awning or casement windows? The good news is that windows and glass doors have improved remarkably since most homes were built. So, when it is time to replace them, you will most likely get more attractive, more secure, easier to clean and more energy-efficient windows and glass doors than those you have been living with. And those improvements have been achieved in most brands offered. So, when you see familiar brands touting improvements like more energy-efficient glass, tilt-in frames for easier cleaning, or double-gasket for a better seal, remember that you really have hundreds of choices in windows that offer the same improvements.

One replacement window company here, Arch City Window, takes pride in their depth of knowledge of the brands they offer. This includes the best-known brands, and many you may not know. Their technicians use thermal technology to determine any air leaks and they will also assess any other damage to your existing windows to help you decide whether you are ready to replace them. If not, there is no pressure to buy. In fact, Arch City will happily seal all the windows in your house to help you get a few more years with the existing windows. And their experienced installers assure a secure, insulated and professional job. For a no-obligation window or door consultation at your home, you can call Arch City Window at 314-296-2983, email them at info@ archcitywindow.com. These Homeowners Have Found the Easier Way to a Cleaner House

or some homeowners, their least favorite task is vacuuming. Dragging a big canister or upright vacuum around the house and up the stairs. Getting the power cord tangled up with the hose and hung up on the furniture. The noise bothering others in the house. And after all that, feeling like they really haven’t gotten their house as clean as they’d hoped, because the vacuum just didn’t have enough power to remove all the pet hair, dust and tracked-in dirt. So, they must go through all of that again.

E NTH USIASTIC ABOUT VACU U MING?

And yet we have met some homeowners who are genuinely enthusiastic about vacuuming. How can that be? What they have in common is that instead of dragging around a vacuum cleaner and having to plug in and re-plug the power cord wherever they go, they have a BEAM® vacuum system built into their home, with outlets wherever they’re needed. They have amazing instant vacuum power when they plug in the hose. And they can barely hear the vacuum, because the power unit is in their garage or basement.

PET HAIR CLE AN U P IS SIMPLE

Karen Yeager in Oakville has mostly hardwood and tile floors in her home. “We have had two dogs and two cats that shed like crazy. Bulky canister vacuums – even expensive ones – don’t let you get right up to the baseboards and deep into cracks. The BEAM vacuum has so much suction that if you just get close to pet hair on the floor it will pick it up instantly. I just plug the hose into the wall and go wherever I need to, without having to drag a heavy canister around.” She also plugs a hose into the BEAM power unit in the garage, making it very easy to clean car interiors. Karen has had a BEAM system installed in three of her homes, in her two daughters’ homes and even their lake house. In her kitchen, she has the Vac-Pan, a built-in dustpan connected to her BEAM system. Just sweep dirt over to it, and everything gets whisked away, without bending over or emptying a dustpan. Recent remodeling in their home threw sawdust everywhere. And just like the glitter from Christmas, her BEAM system got everything up quickly and easily.

RE DUCE ALLE RGY SYMP TOMS WITHOUT ME DS

Crystal Younger of St. Charles has had BEAM built-in vacuums in her homes for over 20 years. Her family has allergies, and the canister vacuums they owned in the past would blow dust back out into the house. She says, “The BEAM system removes all dust from the house, and with the canister in the garage, emptying it there keeps the dust from coming back in.” Crystal has a home business that throws off lots of threads and dust in her work room. Two hose outlets in that room keep the space completely clean and dust-free. She enthusiastically recommends BEAM builtin vacuums to her friends. The passion BEAM built-in vacuum owners feel about their BEAM is clear. They all say that once you’ve had a BEAM, you’ll never want to vacuum the other way again. A BEAM whole-house cleaning system can be built into any existing home at no extra cost. For a free phone estimate, or to learn more about a BEAM system for your home, you can call BEAM of St. Louis at 314-391-9303, or visit them online at www.countyliving.info/Beam.

t seems that when most homes were built, little thought was given to wardrobe, storage or at-home work needs of families that were going to live there. Maybe that’s why most of us have closets where there never seems to be room to put everything or ways to find anything. And according to the National Association of Home Builders, a walk-in closet rated number one in the amenities builders planned to include in homes they were building in 2015. Fortunately for homes built before 2015, today there is the opportunity for closet systems and other space solutions that are custom-designed to meet specific and changing needs of each member of the family. For closets and workspaces that are more functional and enjoyable to use, it pays to consider a custom system. A professional designer can provide a solution that will work best for your specific needs, and flexibility to adapt as needs change over time. The process starts from scratch with the designer creating an organizational portrait of family members who will use the space, asking about their needs, accurately measuring and inventorying items that need to go in it. here are important reasons why people want to start an exercise and nutrition program. To lose weight, get strong and healthy, look and be their best for an upcoming event, or to simply be a positive role model for their family. These reasons take on personal importance that is unique to each individual. What is not unique, however, are the three major barriers to success that my clients faced when they tried to reach these goals on their own. These issues are exactly why they turned to me to achieve the success you see in the examples on this page, and why you may consider doing the same if you are having a hard time reaching your health and fitness goals: NOT KNOWING HOW TO PUT A COMPLETE PROGRAM TOGETHER. A

comprehensive health and fitness program should consist of all the following with the proper amounts/ratios related to your specific goals: Nutrition, Supplementation, Resistance Training, Cardiovascular Exercise, Flexibility or Mobility Work and Proper Rest. If this seems a little overwhelming, you’re not alone.

NOT HAVING A WORKABLE PLAN OF ACTION. You can try the latest and

greatest diet and exercise program known to man, but if it doesn’t fit into your schedule or physical capabilities, as well as integrate all the components listed above, then you’re simply wasting your time. A health and fitness plan must be “doable” for the individual - otherwise it is useless. NOT HAVING A PROPER SUPPORT SYSTEM IN PLACE. Making changes in

your routine necessary for achieving specific health and fitness goals can be extremely challenging. It’s inevitable that you will come up against frustrations, uncertainties and questions along the way. Having someone there to guide, motivate, educate, support and hold you accountable to what you have committed to do for yourself will prove to be one of the best ways to reach your goals. If you are struggling with one or all of these problems on your path to improved health and fitness, then I would recommend not to waste another single day. I have helped dozens of clients achieve their goals and I can help you as well! THOMAS TAYLOR, after 6 weeks down 15.5 lbs, lost 3.5 inches and reduced body fat by 3.5%

bout 100 years ago Joseph Pilates developed a comprehensive system of exercise to improve flexibility, strength, posture and endurance. It puts emphasis on alignment, core strengthening, coordination and balance. The Pilates system customizes exercises for beginners to advanced athletes, and increases intensity over time as the body adapts. The Pilates exercise method includes amazing equipment called the Reformer and the Tower to assist clients in achieving their goals. The focus is on doing precise, targeted movements that become second nature, and that carry over into everyday life as grace and economy of movement. Pilates is great cross training and can be combined with other exercise to improve core strength, balance and breath control. Professional athletes, especially golfers, have discovered the benefits of this exercise method. THE PIL ATES CE NTE R OF ST. LOUIS

ou have probably seen a lot of advertising for CoolSculpting, the revolutionary procedure to contour your body by selectively removing unwanted fat without surgery, needles or downtime. I wanted to share with you some information that should be helpful for considering this innovative procedure for yourself. The technology behind CoolSculpting was based on the simple observation, that children who ate a lot of popsicles developed dimples, due to a loss of fat in their cheeks from excessive exposure to cold. The idea that cold can selectively remove fat led to the innovative CoolSculpting process developed at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. CoolSculpting targets that stubborn fat in the abdomen, waistline, back and love handles, thighs, knees, arms or under your chin that just doesn’t go away even with dieting and exercise. The procedure works by delivering controlled cooling to gently and effectively target fat cells underneath the skin, while leaving the skin itself unaffected. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), then die and are cleared away naturally.

Over time, your immune system gradually eliminates these dead fat cells, and they are gone for good. Remaining fat cells condense, reducing the fat layer in the targeted area, for a more sculpted appearance just weeks after treatment, and is permanent. Look at the photos on this page that a recent patient at Eternity Medical Spa took of herself at home. The “after” photos were taken just three weeks after treatment. The procedure is cleared by the FDA, is safe and effective. Most patients return to their normal activities immediately after treatment. And unlike invasive procedures such as liposuction, there is no pain, risk of infection or long recovery period. While CoolSculpting is an established, safe and effective procedure, it is important to select a provider that has considerable experience in providing it. I have the experience and the artistic skill to deliver major, natural-looking results to all my clients. I will spend time with you to understand your goals and tailor a customized treatment to help you achieve them. There is a difference in what various practices charge and be wary if they ask you to commit to multiple treatments before meeting with you to assess your actual needs.

MICHELLE KICHURA is the owner of Eternity Medical Spa and is a certified CoolSculpting Technician. Eternity was one of the first medical spas in the St. Louis area to offer CoolSculpting, and she has been successfully performing the procedure for over five years. She has also been a certified Laser Technician for 10 years. Michelle is very proud that she comes from a family of physicians. She uses her artistic skills to ensure the best possible results for her clients, while using her educational background to help teach them about different options and treatments. Eternity is a full-service medical spa owned and supervised by medical professionals, also offering Botox, Bellafill, Juvederm, Voluma, Radiesse, Beletero, and more, laser treatments, vein treatments and several different options for anti-aging and skin tightening. They use all the latest and most innovative techniques and believe strongly in ongoing training throughout the year. ou’re active, you’re healthy, and you’re adventurous. You’re hip, you have an iPhone! You go out to the Symphony, the Movies, the Zoo, attend clubs and lectures. As active, healthy and adventurous as you are, you may find that you strain to hear others talk. Like most Baby Boomers and especially on the telephone or in noisy environments, you may be beginning to notice difficulty hearing in different environments. You are convinced that others are mumbling when they speak. They tell you that you have the TV or radio turned up too loud, and that too often they must repeat themselves when talking with you. If you, or someone you know, strains to hear conversation, or needs to watch a speaker’s lips more closely to follow along, then it may be time to consider a hearing test. The fact is that one in six Baby Boom-

ers have a hearing problem. In fact, hearing loss is the third largest chronic health condition in America, so you are not alone. If you’re like most people who care about their health, every year your get your vision checked by an optometrist. You may get your teeth cleaned by the dentist. Many people get a physical by their primary care doctor, but less than 10 people out of 100 will ever get their hearing tested. HE ARING LOSS CAN LE AD TO SE RIOUS HE ALTH PROB LE MS

At first, a slight hearing loss seems like a minor inconvenience. But two studies by John Hopkins Medical School reveal that people with a hearing loss are up to five times more likely to develop dementia or other cognitive conditions. Your brain can lose a cubic centimeter or more of brain tissue each year your hearing loss goes untreated. And hearing loss can cause social isolation from avoiding conversation, sometimes leading to depression.

“Think of the pathways from your inner ear to your brain as a road,” said Nathan Bush, Marketing Director at Miracle-Ear Hearing Centers. “If a road is no longer driven, weeds grow over it and it becomes deteriorated. With your ears, the nerves in the cochlea (inner ear) need to be stimulated and exercised to effectively transmit sound waves to the brain. The roads to the brain should be very highly valued.” THE FIRST STE P – A PROFESSIONAL HE ARING TEST

If you haven’t had a professional hearing test, or it’s been a long time since you have, it is a very easy process. A hearing test, tests all three parts of your ear. The three parts of the ear are the outer, middle, and inner ear. To test the outer ear your Hearing Health Specialist will use an otoscope to check for wax buildup, they display this on the television monitor for you to see. To test the middle ear, the specialist will check the eardrum and the three bones (three smallest in the body) for proper functionality and to ensure you are not in need of an emergency medical referral. Lastly, they will check your cochlea. In fact, the Specialist will test 12 different areas of the cochlea. This is to measure how much and at what frequencies you are experiencing loss. For over 70 years, Miracle-Ear Hearing Centers have been helping St. Louisans improve their lives by improving their

hearing. No other provider can match their history in providing the latest hearing aid technology and service to meet individual hearing health needs.

& L A N D S C A P E S 39 CLM

Today’s hearing aids don’t just amplify sound. The Miracle-Ear device actually has a brain. It can identify your voice and the voice of others. When trying to have a conversation, when you’re out to dinner, it will keep your voice natural, amplify the voice of your conversation partner while reducing background noise a full six decibels below speech. Just like your own brain, it helps you tune out the clutter and focus on what you want to hear. Today’s hearing aids are made to sync with your iPhone. You can adjust the volume, programs, and when synced knows when you are moving and relaxes the directionality of the hearing device for a more natural sound in your environments. With today’s devices you can direct stream and still have and hear conversation. Conversation, natural sounds, and stimulation of the nerves in the cochlea are important for your health. A Miracle-Ear hearing aid offers you crystal clear conversations, improved spatial auditory perceptions, and nerve stimulation. All this will curtail loss of brain matter, and keeps you connected to other people. Miracle-Ear Centers are located throughout the St. Louis metro area. They provide free comprehensive hearing tests for everyone. If you need a hearing aid, they offer a full range of discrete behind-theear and in-ear options that allow users to enjoy more natural sound quality, wherever life takes them. This provides an overview of a couple innovations that are having a big impact in our office.

Traditionally, to make dental impressions, the models used for molding dental crowns, inlays and other tooth restorations, a dentist or dental assistant would go through the time-consuming process of taking an impression. This was done by selecting a tray that fits your mouth, mixing up a fresh batch of gooey molding material, inserting it into your mouth carefully to keep you from gagging, waiting patiently while it firmed up, making sure you could still breathe, and carefully removing it without pulling out other crowns with it. The mold then needed to be disinfected, packed and shipped to a dental lab. Now we make impressions with the 3m True Definition Scanner (as shown above). ryotherapy is a brief, intensive exposure to dry, cold air that triggers natural healing. Developed forty years ago to reduce soreness and pain of arthritis, it also provides faster muscle recovery, reduced inflammation, improved skin and a general feeling of well-being. It is painless, and results are dramatically quick and surprisingly long lasting. The Cryotherapy Sauna lowers skin surface temperature to 30 degrees in 30 to 45

seconds and keeps it there for two to three minutes. The cold air is dry, so it never freezes the skin. The cold sends signals to the brain that move blood from extremities to the core, where it is enriched with oxygen, enzymes and nutrients. As you re-warm, this rich blood is pushed back to the extremities, increasing circulation, replacing damaged cells and expelling toxins. Afterwards, you will have a warm, tingling sensation, and experience release of endorphins, your “feel-good hormones. After ten to fifteen minutes you will notice increased energy that lasts for up to six

hours. Reduced muscle soreness enables faster recovery, reduced anxiety and improved sleep. Increased collagen production can reduce cellulite, for healthier skin and appearance. For over four years, SubZero Cryotherapy has been providing these benefits to athletes and others who are active and health-conscious, first at their location at 17722 Chesterfield Airport Road in Chesterfield, and now also in the city at 5323 Northrup Ave. near The Hill.

MEGAN SANDERS is owner of SUBZERO and a certified physical and massage therapist. She also offers Muscle Release Technique stretching therapy to relieve pain, tendonitis and limited range of motion. This treatment lengthens muscles and improves circulation, reducing inflammation so permanent healing can take place. At SubZero, new clients can experience the benefits of cryotherapy for the special rate of just $20 for your first session. You can make your appointment by calling 636-778-2233. You can learn more about cryotherapy and read testimonials from SubZero clients at subzero-wellness.com.

The human body needs oxygen to survive and function properly. Red blood cells in the lungs collect and distribute oxygen throughout the entire body. People with allergies, asthma, COPD and other breathing difficulties are affected by mucous in the lungs that makes it more difficult to absorb oxygen. This affects not only their quality of life, but also others around them. Purifying the respiratory system can resolve some of the most common, annoying and even vicious breathing problems people face, including sinusitis, bronchitis and a host of other respiratory illnesses. Dry Salt Therapy, also known as halotherapy, is a method of inhaling pure, dry, micronized fine salt particles. It disperses fine salt particles in the air that are comfortably inhaled. Halotherapy is 100% natural, drug-free complementary therapy

that works with medications taken by those with respiratory and skin issues. It offers the natural antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and absorbent properties of sea salt to provide relief for respiratory, and also skin conditions, by attracting moisture and absorbing bacteria and other impurities responsible for many skin issues.  Scientific studies show that people who suffer with asthma or other ailments breathe easier after halotherapy. The calming and detoxifying effects also help support the immune, nervous and lymphatic systems. Additional benefits are reduced stress and headaches, increased energy, and better sleep patterns. And there are no reported negative side effects. Dr. Norman Edelman, Senior Scientific Advisor to the American Lung Association,

says, “When fine salt particles are inhaled, they fall on the airway linings and draw water into the airway, thinning mucous and making it easier to raise, thus helping people feel better,” said Dr. Edelman. “Also, these salt air environments are allergen-free and thus good for people with allergies affecting their lungs.” The Salt Box, at 11628 Old Ballas Road in Creve Coeur, offers private concentrated 15-minute halotherapy sessions in their cozy salt room. Sessions are comfortable, at room temperature and require no change of clothes. To book a session you can call or text them at (314) 691-1693, and for more information you can visit their website stlSaltBox.com.

The Advantages of 3D Mammograms

I

f you are a woman over 40, your medical provider will probably recommend a yearly mammogram. Many health care providers are offering 3D mammography to help find breast cancer at an early stage when treatment is most likely to be successful.

WHAT IS 3D MAMMOG R APHY (AK A TOMOSYNTHESIS)?

A 2D mammogram takes 2 pictures of each breast – one from the top and one from the side. For every one picture in a 2D, the 3D captures 40-50 images from many different angles. It takes a millimeter-by-millimeter look through your breast tissue and any masses that may be associated with breast cancers. With 3D mammography, breast cancer detection rates, especially in women with dense breasts, has increased up to 40% according to research presented to the Radiological Society of North America. 3D may be your best choice and the best chance of detecting small cancers. HOW SHOU LD I PRE PARE FOR A 3D MAMMOG R AM?

he ancient ash tree in our back yard reaches halfway to Orion, where its loftiest branches fork and fork again to throw new shoots toward the sun. Tucked into those soaring ash cradles--not big enough yet to make Louisville Sluggers, but the perfect size for slingshots--a trio of squirrel nests ride out the seasons and the storms, safe from most predators, safe from me. As springtime yields to summer, and my young tomato plants push out of the soil to bask in the warmth of the sun, a menace gnaws at the back of my mind. Squirrels are thoughtless thieves. They rob indiscriminately. Bird feeders. Dog dishes. They don’t care. Worse, they don’t remember. You can scare a squirrel by beating a galvanized pail with a crowbar, and in the time it takes your bartender to mix a mind eraser, the squirrel will return to tip the pail and check for birdseed. But the squirrel’s biggest fault, its most unforgivable transgression, is lack of attention to detail. Stubby is different. The other squirrels in our backyard have no ethics. They’re worse than robbers. Worse than pirates and land sharks and extortionists and pick-pockets. Worse than marauders and picaroons, smugglers and swindlers and poachers. Well, maybe poachers are worse. But few filchers and pilferers do a sloppier job of destruction than squirrels. Stubby is none of those things. He’s instantly recognizable because he has a fuzzy stub where a flowing tail should twitch. Not sure how he lost his tail. It might be a birth defect. Maybe a dog bit it off. He might’ve skittered too close under the wheels of an oncoming car. Stubby is a loner.

Other squirrels seem to have mates, or friends. Stubby appears to be an outcast from squirrel society where a bushy tail is prized for balance and warmth. No matter. Stubby persists. And he’s learned to hang around Cheryl and me on our back deck, where we fatten him with almonds and pecans. So despite being shunned by other squirrels, he eats well. He has learned to check us for food. We’re orphans, Cheryl and I. Our last pet left us a year ago. We opted to stay petless for a while, since our vagabond schedules would annoy any self-respecting territorial terrier. So Stubby fills a void. We believe Stubby is male. Hard to tell, since he keeps a safe distance from us, even as he awaits our handouts. Maybe he lost his genitalia in the same skirmish that took his tail, and a chunk of fur from his back.

Regardless, we think he’s smarter than the average squirrel, to quote Bullwinkle, pal and confidant to the legendary Rocket J. Squirrel. Of course Rocky the Squirrel can fly and make witty conversation. Stubby is light on chatter, and carries an extra layer of fat, thank you very much. Yet somewhere in his walnut brain, he has recalculated his ability to leap--without a tail--from roof to tree. This time of year Stubby begins to eye the vigorous tomato vines. And we’ll welcome him to taste the fruit when I transplant the tomato vines into the garden. When Stubby takes a tomato, he eats the whole thing. Not the other squirrels. We believe Stubby is crafty and cunning, wily and sly, stemming from his close encounters with grim reapers. He’d be a dashing mate for one of the other squirrels, if only they could see his good side. Alas, the squirrel kingdom is unforgiving. But we’ll keep favoring Stubby. If you think obsession with a rodent is stupid, don’t take your kids to Disneyland.

STEVEN A. WEBER is Partner – Director of Valuation at Property Assessment Review and PAR Residential. His team of experts has the experience, market and legal knowledge to achieve the biggest tax reduction possible on residential properties. He has been reducing property taxes for 30 years, and before that was a Senior Appraiser for St. Louis County for five years. Property Assessment Review is the leading property tax consulting firm in St. Louis, saving over $100 million for some of the region’s largest commercial taxpayers – the St. Louis Galleria, Solon Gershman, Duke Realty, Mills Properties and US Bank. In 2008, PAR created PAR Residential to represent home owners in St. Louis County. PAR’s residential clients have saved over $9,000,000 in real estate taxes since 2009 with over 80% of appeals resulting in tax savings.

he new tax plan includes a $10,000 cap on the amount taxpayers can deduct in combined property tax and local and state income tax while nearly doubling standard deductions to $12,000 for single filers and $24,000 for married couples who file jointly. This means many people who have historically itemized to deduct things like property taxes or mortgage interest will get more by claiming the standard deduction. These changes make taking steps to minimize your property tax bill even more important than in the past. All St. Louis City and County properties were reappraised in 2017. This value is used to determine your property taxes for 2017 and will be used again in 2018. This appraised value is supposed to represent the market value of your home as of January 1, 2017. WHILE 2018 IS NOT A REASSESSMENT YEAR, PROPERTIES THAT WERE NOT APPEALED IN 2017, OR THAT HAVE SOLD SINCE THE MIDDLE OF 2017 CAN BE APPEALED IN 2018.

With the rise in home values, we have found for many properties the increased value does not reflect the actual changes in value based on recent sale prices of homes that are comparable with yours. In fact, since 2009 we have filed over 15,000 appeals in St. Louis County alone resulting in over $9,000,000 in tax savings to homeowners.

The simple fact is – assessors make mistakes. They utilize computer based mass appraisal techniques, market averages and neighborhood models to determine property values, which may not accurately reflect your property value. These errors and miscalculations end up costing you money year after year. A NO - RISK RESOU RCE FOR HOMEOWNE RS .

You now have the opportunity to have your appraised value professionally reviewed to determine if you are being fairly taxed. We base our opinion of market value not on mass computer modeling like the Assessor does but on real comparable sales in your neighborhood. PAR Residential does all the work and only earns a fee if we are successful in lowering your taxes. All costs of the appeal are paid by PAR Residential including legal fees and appraisal costs. Here’s how it works: 1. SET UP A FILE. PAR will gather information from you and County records, including the assessor’s “appraisal”, and set up a case file on your home. 2. DETERMINATION OF FAIR VALUE.

PAR Residential will determine a fair appraised value for your property based on real comparable sales in your neighborhood. 3. NOTIFICATION. We will notify you of the results of our review of your appraised value. If we determine the assessor’s appraised value is fair no appeal will be filed. There will be no cost to you for our time and efforts.

4. FILE YOUR APPEAL BEFORE THE JULY 9TH DEADLINE. If we determine

that your property is over-valued by the assessor we will file an appeal on your behalf and provide the required information to the Board of Equalization. 5. BOARD OF EQUALIZATION (BOE) hearings The PAR Residential Team will attend the hearing and argue your case. We will send the official BOE results to you in September and let you know if we need to continue your appeal to the State Tax Commission of Missouri. 6. FEE. Only if we are successful in achieving a reduction in your property tax bill, we share equally in the tax savings (50/50). All of our work is performance based: NO SAVINGS, NO FEE . There are no additional costs to you for any of our work. Our invoice will be sent to you in the fall arriving about the same time you receive your reduced tax bill. ver the last 20 years, there has been a great proliferation of computers and other technologies that are now common in most of our homes – Internet, wireless networks, cloud computing, smart phones, highdefinition TV, streaming entertainment, virtual reality, and of course computers that are much more powerful than ever. While these technologies are becoming more user-friendly, that doesn’t mean they are without glitches, difficult-to-understand setup instructions, frustrations when they don’t work, and even some malicious online parties that are out to take your money with the threat of losing your functionality or data. Here are some common problems that you have probably encountered, and how to deal with them. After you have tried to handle such problems on your own, it may be a better use of your time to call professionals who can help get you beyond the frustrations and on the path to enjoying your technology and having it working more productively for you.

Factors that can limit Wi-Fi effectiveness include how your home is built and objects that can block signals – steel or concrete construction and objects like air vents or aquariums, as well as interference from neighbors’ networks and other gadgets. These can all affect your signal strength and coverage. The placement (and type) of your router also can affect Wi-Fi coverage and signal strength. Some easy maintenance you can do yourself can help. But to get at the cause and solve these problems, we can analyze your network and determine how to extend wireless coverage, eliminate dead spots and speed it up. HOW DO I KNOW WHETHER TO HAVE MY COMPUTER OR PRINTER FIXED, OR IS IT BETTER TO JUST GET NEW EQUIPMENT?

When problems come after the warranty expires, you are faced with decisions about each component: whether it is worthwhile to repair it, upgrade it or purchase new. Furthermore, some problems – like software issues – are not covered by your warranty. As new technologies get much better, the price of repair goes up and the price of new comes down. For many items such as printers it just isn’t worth fixing the old equipment, especially as parts become unavailable or more costly. We can help you weigh the pros and cons of fix/repair/upgrade vs. purchasing new equipment.

any of us who have lived in the St. Louis area our whole lives don’t know much about our own history. We learn in school about world history, US history and facts about Missouri government, but very little is taught about the history of our own county. And newcomers to St. Louis generally know even less about the area. To help all of us feel more connected to our own community, County Living Publications has re-published The History of St. Louis County, Missouri by William Lyman Thomas, a 100-year old book that documents our history from the earliest settlers through the Civil War and into the first decade of the 20th century. It documents what life was like 100 years ago here the towns, neighborhoods, schools, churches, social societies, government, businesses, transportation and amusements of the period, and thousands of the people who were active in these endeavors. ike most business owners, you probably think from time to time about selling your business – to retire, start or join another business, pursue other things on your “bucket list” or out of necessity. However, a recent survey of business owners found that over 80% either do not have an exit plan or have a vague plan that has not been documented or communicated. Like any other major business decision, to effectively sell your company or professional practice takes thought and planning. What holds back most owners are that they are so busy running their businesses, and they do not know how to do it because they have not sold a business before. Fortunately, there are professionals whose job it is to provide hands-on help, working step by step through the process to a successful sale. An experienced business broker starts by asking questions in confidence that determine the best timing and price at which your business can be sold. They work through a valuation, which reflects how your company relates to the current local market. Working together, you and the business broker mutually agree to a fair market sale price. The next step is to plan for marketing your business by determining one or more likely buyer profiles to target. The broker will create a generic information release to share with prospective buyers that does not contain confidential informa-
