Arioso is a talented women’s double trio which was formed in 2008. Members are Juliana Elsinga, Claire Caseley Smith, Heather Lauraine-Harris Coulson, Angela Profit, Maureen Brennan, Meghan McCarthy and pianist, Jennifer MacDonald.

Arioso will be presenting four Christmas concerts to help raise funds for worthy causes this Christmas season. They kick the season off Sunday, Dec 1, 2013 7 pm at Kensington United Church, with all proceeds to the Malpeque Credit Union Christmas Tree of Hope. On Friday, December 6, 2013 at 7pm, they will be at Trinity United Church in Summerside, PEI, with all proceeds in support of Janice Gillis.

On Sunday, December 8, Arioso will be joining ARCHER at the beautiful St. Mary’s Church, Indian River, for a concert in support of the Friends of St. Mary’s.

Last, but not least, Saturday, December 14, 2013 they will be at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church in Sherwood, PEI for a concert in support of the church.

Lady Slipper Step Dancers To Host Christmas Concert and Recital The Lady Slipper Dancers will be holding their Christmas Concert and Recital on Saturday afternoon, November 30 at 2 p.m., at the Murray Christian Education Centre in Kensington.

Reels, Jigs, Hornpipes, Marches, Waltzes, Strathespey & Reels, and fun group numbers will be performed by the dancers in colourful costumes to lively toe-tapping fiddle music.

Premier Pledges Gender Parity

by Andy Walker Editor, Island Farmer / Freelance journalist President, Canadian Association of Journalist, PEI Vice president, Atlantic Farm Writers Association When it comes to appointing people to a host of boards and commissions, Premier Robert Ghiz is pledging to institute gender equality by 2018.

Shortly after coming to office, the premier establish an entity called Participate PEI, inviting Islanders to apply to be appointed to the dozens of agencies, boards and commissions that fall under the provincial government banner. Some of these groups are high profile and the members

receive a salary-- The Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission comes to mind. Others are relatively obscure and carry little but a small honorarium. Most people, for example, have never heard of the Boiler and Pressure Vessels Advisory Board.

After making the promise in the Speech from the Throne, the premier told reporters the number of women currently on agencies, boards and commissions ranges between 20 and 33 per cent.

There is no question that number is low, especially considering females make up over half of the population and are now the majority of the student body in most universities and colleges across the country.

I know this may be an unpopular sentiment, but I get nervous when I hear talk of parity or employment equity. Before you get ready to throw something at me or call me sexist, just hear me out for a minute. I believe that nobody should ever be denied a job because they are a woman—the same principle applies

to employment equity.

Most people believe that but not many believe the other obvious truth that flows from that—I don’t think a person should receive a job they are not otherwise qualified for just because they are a woman— again, the same principal applies to employment equity. That sentiment is not as politically correct.

Throughout my career as a journalist, I have seen plenty of women assume elected office. I was covering the legislature when PEI’s version of the “famous five” was in office. The lieutenant governor, premier, opposition leader, speaker and deputy speaker were all women.

Kinkora Regional High School Athletic Program Update School + Community Support= Success

They were all elected by the same system that sent their male counterparts of the day into office—namely they received the nomination of their party and then convinced the electorate they were the best person to represent their interest at Province House.

Those five—Marion Reid, Catherine Callbeck, Pat Mella, Nancy Guptill and Libbie Hubley respectively, didn’t need “gender parity.” There were plenty of other women that have served with distinction since Jean Canfield became the first female MLA in 1970.

To put in a requirement that says a certain percentage of the appointees on boards have to be women or native persons or disabled or any other group leaves a nagging question about those appointed from that group.

People wonder if they

are the most qualified or had gender parity or employment equity working for them.

That being said, is the premier right to encourage more applications from women to Participate PEI and to encourage more w omen to seek elected office? Of course he is.

The premier should keep both politics and gender out of the equation and appoint the most qualified person for the job. I know such talk can make me sound naive, but ideally that is how the system should work.

Those who argue for gender parity would probably agree with my hiring criteria, but argue the system doesn’t work in favour of women candidates. They maintain gender parity is needed to equalize the process. I still say two wrongs don’t make a right.

ANNUAL BLAZER BEEF SUPPER KRHS students, staff and parents are busy preparing for their Annual Blazer Beef Supper (this year roast beef is replacing turkey). This year marks the 41st supper served at KRHS. The first turkey supper was served in 1970 and continued annually until 2002. The event took a brief 4 year break and in 2006 students started serving meals again. This fundraiser is a joint initiative involving students, parents, staff and the community and is one of the major fundraisers carried out by KRHS with all funds supporting school activities throughout the year. Last year the supper was once again a huge success as 610 meals were prepared and served. This year the supper is being held on Sunday, November 24th from 4:00-6:00pm in the KRHS gymnasium.

Eat in and take out meals are available. Please drop by to support this worthwhile and tasty event.

PEI has an excellent climate for trees. The old forests of PEI provided high quality timber for ship building in the age of sail. Pockets of old growth forests still exist. The Hogg Woods off of the Confederation Trail east of Kensington is home to many beautiful pine, oak and sugar maples. Stands of large red and white pine are scattered through Indian River and a small pocket in the Irishtown Woods in Sea View. A beautiful stand of hemlock is growing along the Barbara Weit River south of Kensington. Stands of large sugar maples can be found in several locations.

One of the most beautiful trees to be found anywhere, not just in Kensington North, or PEI, but anywhere, is an American Elm in Burlington, on the property of Jim and Cathy Evans. Recently, professional foresters measured the tree and estimated its age. With a circumference of 405 cm, and a

height of 34 metres, taking into account the ideal location for its growth (a meadow close to a watercourse), its estimated age is 150 years. There are older trees on PEI, but this huge Elm is still very strong and graceful, having achieved quick growth under ideal conditions. It can be seen from the intersection of the Irishtown Rd. (Rte 101) and the County Line Rd. The setting, with a mixed forest and field background, and horses grazing in the foreground, is serene and majestic.

When Bill Drost established Bay Winds Auto Sales last year he know it would be tough to enter into an already competitive used car and truck market.

Last week the car dealer took a new approach and installed a video display where he places a car under the screen and keeps reducing the price until the car sells. “I came to the conclusion that I need to do something different to set me apart from the other local car dealers.” says Drost.

The current car with the roll back price is a 2010 Honda Civic. Drost says the car retails for over $13000 but he started the price at $11500 and is dropping it one dollar every half hour or $48 a day until it sells. The price will soon hit $11000.

Drost isn’t worried that he will lose too much on each car since he is counting on the word getting out and people making a point to have a look at what the car and price is every day and selling more because of it.

Bay Winds Auto Sales also is trying another novel approach to selling by offering a free six month power train warranty on every vehicle they sell.

Special Guest Speaker at Branch No 9 November 11th Banquet, Owen J.W. Parkhouse, gave an impassioned and very enlightening talk on his experience of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Guests gave Mr. Parkhouse a standing ovation for his inspiring and interesting talk.

When in danger, it’s natural to feel afraid. This fear triggers many split-second changes in the body to prepare to defend against the danger or to avoid it. This “fight-or-flight” response is a healthy reaction meant to protect a person from harm. But in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), this reaction is changed or damaged. People who have PTSD may feel stressed or frightened even when they’re no longer in danger. PTSD develops after a terrifying ordeal that involved physical harm or the threat of physical harm.

Army Cadets Participate in Trekking Field Training Exercise The 1231 Kensington and 20 Stratford Army Cadet Corps participated in a joint trekking field training exercise in late October in Dromore Trails.

The cadets participated in a three day exercise which had them setting up and tearing down their bivouac sites, and relocating them each day. The cadets, with only a map and compass, navigating their way and trekked over 12km in a two day span, cooking their military rations along the way. Become a Visionary at Prince County Hospital

What is your legacy?

The “Visionary Society” was established at the Prince County Hospital Foundation in May 2013 providing donors the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy in their community through the Prince County Hospital (PCH). This group is comprised of distinguished individuals and organizations who have made provisions in their will or through an insurance policy to support the PCH in the future.

A donor wall was unveiled at the Prince County Hospital to recognize and thank these friends of PCH Foundation for their foresight and consideration of healthcare in the future. Pep Rally to Celebrate Fall Teams Athletics Thursday KISH is holding their first pep rally of the year. The soccer teams, volleyball teams, golf team, and cross country team will be celebrated during the afternoon. Congratulations to all teams and their success. Sr Boys Soccer finished with a bronze medal, Sr Women’s Volleyball team finished with a silver medal. All KISH teams had a strong season.

The Sr Men’s Basketball team has been selected and the season gets underway in a couple of weeks.

The try outs for the Sr Girl’s teams have already started and the team will be picked next week. Jr High Basketball is still in the stages of try outs and selecting their rosters.

Spirit Week started on Monday. This is the second spirit week of the year! This spirit week began with Moustache Monday to support Movember, Tourist Shirt Tuesday, Pattern Day Wednesday, and Green and White Day on Thursday. Each day there will be activities held in the cafeteria. The students who participate will be eligible to win Spirit king or queen!

KISH is having their first ever Christmas Formal on December 5th with Jr dance 6-8:30 and Sr dance from 8:30-10:30. Tickets will be pre-sold through out November and December. $1 will be taken off the price of ticket if you bring in a non-perishable food item.

Christmas Concert The annual KISH Christmas Concert will be held December 12th. All acts should start preparing for auditions. Stage hands will be needed as well as tech people to help out come concert time.

Chipmunk Gets Ready For Winter Phyllis Nolan of eastern Kings county recently told me of an interesting incident in her back yard.

They were doing some work around their home and it involved the use of the pink insulation that we are all familiar with.

They looked outside one afternoon and a chipmunk was high tailing it across the yard with a chunk of pink insulation in its mouth. I’d like to know if this was the first or last trip of many for Chippy. If so, it’s my guess that he’s going to have one very cozy spot to spend the winter. If you can tell us about a neat nest you’ve come across, please drop me a line.

One More Jar I find it very hard to accept the fact that pickle making is done for another year – and in fact it isn’t.

There are still enough beets in the garden for another batch of beet relish and that may be tomorrow’s project.

I encountered beet relish for the first time when I visited Ontario this fall and it’s a winner in my estimation. Now I Googled it and beet relish takes on many forms but the version I made was simple.

Cooked beets processed in the food processor, plus vinegar, sugar, salt and horseradish with a bit of plain gelatin to stiffen it up. Now there’s no small amount of horseradish in this recipe so it packs quite a wallop for a vegetable as

basic as beets. Besides being full of flavor, it’s pretty and bottled in 250ml jars makes a great hostess gift.

Just be sure to label it well lest some poor soul spread it on his toast. Horseradish - laced beets would give one quite a jolt at 7 in the morning if you had it on toast along with your coffee!

Has horseradish been part of your culinary culture? Not mine, but I think that’s about to change. I realize that horesradish and roast beef go together just like apple pie and cheese (although the latter combo does not appeal to me). And since I had both roast beef and horseradish in the house, this week my lunch on the road every day was home-jmade burger buns with roast beef, horseradish and barbeque sauce. Some good!

Now one reason why I haven’t come across horseradish often over the years is that it’s not a crop everyone would like to have in their garden. It tends to be invasive and if you till it, in an attempt to get rid of it, the exercise will likely backfire on you, for every chunk of root is likely to result in another plant.

plant horseradish. And if your yard is smallish, don’t plant horseradish at all.

I looked to see what the website HortTechnology had to say about this crop. The state of Illinois produces in the vicinity of 1500 acres of horseradish with a farm gate value of around 10 million dollars.

Horse radish in this state is grown in an annual production system.

Pieces of root are planted in the spring and harvested between early November and mid-December. The crop needs a long growing season with hot summers and cooler weather in late summer and fall.

What about the nutritional value of horseradish? I was a little disappointed. I read the label on the bottle of “creamed” horseradish that I bought to make my beet relish.

One teaspoon of the product has 2% of ones daily Value of vitamin C, 15mg sodium and very little else other than taste!

Flap, flap......

They are definitely not rare birds. Morning and evening crows fly past our property. In the morning they head northwest by the dozens – maybe hundreds - and then in the evening make the return trip. It’s been a couple of years since I noticed them making this trip in such numbers.

Maybe farm crop rotations changed

the flight patterns of these birds. When I see them going past in such numbers I think of the enormous numbers of passenger pigeons that once inhabited North America and that bird is now extinct.

There are species of crow that are extinct too.

Wikipedia tells us that the Hawaiian crow is now extinct in the wild – a bird that was known for its “strong flying ability and resourcefulness”. It’s thought that introduced diseases had something to do with the decline of this bird. As of October 2012, there were 109 in captivity and attempts have been made to reintroduce them to the wild but so far with little success.

Speaking of extinctions, the website www. birdlife.org <http://www. birdlife.org/> tells us that it is believed that 151 bird species have gone extinct since 1500 and 19 of them in the last quarter of the 20th century.

Here’s an interesting bird call. The book “Amazing Bird facts and Trivia”

by Lederer claims that you can imitate the call of a “corn crake” by brushing a credit card over the teeth of a comb! This bird breeds in Europe and Asia and the call of the male corn crake can be heard a mile away!

Automotive Heritage PEI

This is one in a series of articles on Automotive History on PEI, researched and written by Rudy Croken, a 40 year member of the PEI Antique Car Club and past-director of the National Association of Automobile Clubs of Canada (NAACC). If you have information on early automobile history you would like to share you can contact the author at rcroken@pei.sympatico.ca The AutomobileVote After the legislature passed the bill that potentially would allow automobiles to run on Island roads community meetings were organized to discuss the issue with most being in opposition to the motors.

I could find few reports on communities lobbying on the pro side of the automobile question. Several such meetings of the soon to be formed Motor Vehicle Association were held in Summerside and Charlottetown. The idea to form the association was not so much to secure the right to run motor vehicles as to educate the public as to the advantages of motor vehicles both with regards to travelling and their general use around the farm and home and also to insist on the rigid enforcement of the law regulating the driving of motor vehicles.

It was felt the only way to deal with the opposition to the auto was to show the people what the modern auto really is and to form a committee “ to wait upon the government asking that a demonstration car be permitted to run in each county on a day and on a road to be specified.”

Shortly after the passing of the bill and the formation of an Automobile Association, a group met in Mount Stewart and formed an Anti-Automobile Association. The following report appeared in the Charlottetown Guardian on May 14, 1913.

Anti-Auto Association Pursuant to notice a large and representative meeting of the electors of Mount Herbert, Southport and Johnston’s River polls, was held in the Mount Stewart Hall on Saturday, the 10th inst, to take into consideration the advisability of organizing an anti-automobile association. They believed that unless they were properly organized, they could do but very little to fight the big automobile club which has lately been formed in

Charlottetown, “which leaves suspicion rife in the public mind that every effort will be made to force the auto.” To be a member of the Anti-Automobile Association you had to be “opposed to the introduction or running of Automobiles on P.E. Island”, be 18 years old, pay a registration fee of 15 cents to the local association and 25 cents to the Provincial Association and take the following pledge: “That he will only vote for such candidate as will pledge himself to repeal the present Auto Act and re-enact the Act of 1907.”

Letters continued from individuals as well and in the May 7, 1913, issue of the Island Farmer a letter appeared that questioned the need of the vote, calling the auto a nuisance and issuing a warning to MLAs that the vote better be carried out fairly. It stated in part: “When the proposed hybrid school meeting plebiscite (the bother of which is made necessary by the treachery of certain of our servants,) is taken, let the signatures, or the marks be placed for or against the prohibitive automobile bill, exactly as it stood in the year 1912.

No concession to any incorporation, no licence to any individual, if the people do not want autos running here. If fraud and strategem and lying are resorted to by the interested advocates and promoters of the nuisance, let them beware.” Another letter appeared and had a warning as well as he closes his letter with a warning that, “If the Auto Act is repealed it will cause an uproar over the whole Island, for people will neither submit quietly or get used to being killed every time they venture on the road, no matter how much money the hotels and bar keepers may make on the head of it.”

ferred to this letter and questioned how many times one could be killed by an auto.

As the debate continued many letters were sent to the press without having the name of the person responsible for writing it but instead using a nom de plume. Many of the unsigned letters were becoming invective and personal with comments and remarks that could be considered offensive. Whether this was the reason for the following announcement in the May 21, 1913, edition of the “Island Farmer” is unclear as no reason is given. It read, “Up to now we have published a lot of resolutions and letters adverse to the repeal of the Anti-Automobile Act. Our columns are open to a perfectly free discussion of the matter and we would like to give equal prominence to both sides of the question. The only stipulation is that the writer’s name and address be furnished for publication.”

Letters to the editor in this paper almost stopped as the vote neared.

It is interesting that almost all the coverage in the newspapers was against the automobile and although there was a fairly large group in support of the auto there was little done in the weeks leading up to the school vote to encourage people to get out and support the running of autos. They simply ran ads stating that people wanting a copy of the 2013 Automobile Bill could contact the Automobile Association.

At the school district meetings the prophecy of the Premier and some government members who expressed the opinion that once the people understood

the restrictions under which automobiles would be allowed to run very few would vote against them.

This was not the case as district after district voted against the automobile, many unanimously against. It was fortunate that the amendment was passed to not require a majority vote of all districts to decide the issue but rather to allow the auto to run in districts that voted in favour of repealing the 1908 Act and permit autos on their roads.

Following is an example of some of the district results especially as it applied to the Kensington/Kinkora area as well as some areas that voted in favour of the automobile.

The following editorial seems to imply the Guardian feels the auto question is on hold for another year. On June 21 the editorial comment was as follows: “The majority of the school districts, having voted down the automobile proposal, motorists will have to restrain their order for another 12 months or so. The surprise was not that the majority polled in opposition but that so many districts favored the running of the automobile, this too, with practically no canvassing in its favor.”

The Summerside Journal expressed disappointment in the vote and wondered with the poor turnout at the school meetings if that was the way the question should have been decided.

The Government now had to make a decision.

I Can Do This, I Know I Can

“I can do this, I know I can. You can too. It’s just going to take time and patience,” explains Cheryl Boom at a recent Kensington TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) meeting. Cheryl, from Edmonton, Alberta recently spent a sunny week here on PEI with her daughter and new grandson, and while on vacation visited the local TOPS group to share her experiences and insight after having lost 125 lbs.

Cheryl’s weight loss journey started about a year and a half ago and was prompted by the forthcoming birth of her first grandchild, Isaac. Like many Canadians, Cheryl was thin and athletically active from childhood to young adulthood but became less active after having her own children. It seemed from her thirties onward she was constantly dieting, and as she professes, “Yoyo dieting simply does not work!”

Before long, the scales tipped north of 300 lbs. At just over 5’3”, she hated the way she looked, how she felt, and when looking at photos of herself, was completely disgusted with the emptiness of her image.

Cheryl’s soul. She recognized that losing weight and keeping it off would be very difficult but was committed to gaining her health and her life back.

All of a sudden, it was a priority for Cheryl to ensure life was as amazing as it could be, and her desire to be around for Isaac and hopefully many more grandchildren for many years had become very important.

The opportunity to share her story with Kensington TOPS members was a dream come true for Cheryl who now has aspirations to be a leader or coach for people with similar challenges.

The event was her first speaking engagement ever. And now, from her home in Edmonton, she regularly checks in with TOPS members she’s met on her Island vacation to encourage them to persevere and ‘win’!

Cheryl’s weight-loss program was custom made, and as she described, her strategies are not rigid. She changes her methods on a frequent basis in order to meet realistic mini goals.

Here are some of the tips she shared with TOPS: •Operate on a 80/20 rule–stick to your program 8 days out of 10, but give yourself some

leeway 20% of the time.

For example, treat yourself to a restaurant meal (within reason of course) on a 20% day.

•Don’t let cravings win.

Simply have that teeny bite of chocolate to satisfy your sweet tooth or mini bag of popcorn if salt is something you desire.

•Do a weekly menu plan in advance.

•Pack your lunch if working outside the home. Make sure healthy and satisfying snacks are included for breaks throughout the day.

•Celebrate NSV’s (nonscale victories). This means acknowledging and rewarding yourself for healthy behaviours such as ‘behaving’ at a potluck or joining a gym.

•Journal-or-track your food to stay focused.

•Drink more water and move! Move lots–any kind of exercise is good.

In closing, Cheryl confesses that a weight loss journey is rewarding but difficult–physically, psychologically and emotionally. You need to be aware and knowledgeable about weight loss, exercise, and nutrition.

You must be committed, and you need support

from family, friends, and organizations such as the TOPS group in Kensington, PEI. She advised, “be kind to yourself,” and cautioned that the best way to achieving goal weight is to choose a slow and steady path. “Losing weight is different for all of us,” says Cheryl, “so design your plan to work best for YOU!” She also cautioned that it was important to feed the fire.

Eating too few calories and depriving your body is not a good road for success. In fact, sometimes if experiencing a plateau or non-weight-loss period of more than a few weeks, adding calories to your daily target can be the solution. This is especially true for folks who’ve increased their physical exertion.

PEI W.I. Spotlights Upcoming Events In November PEIWI’s spotlight falls on a variety of branch listings, events and ceremonies along with extending a note of appreciation on recent WI fall workshops.

Brackley Beach WI invites all to their Christmas Luncheon & Bake Sale on Saturday, November 23rd, 11 am 1 pm at the Community Centre, 3330 Brackley Point Road. Preserves, pickles, and a variety of baked goods will be for sale. Tickets are available from any of the WI branch members or Ellen Cudmore at 672-2063.

PEIWI also encourages participation in upcoming events throughout December.

Annually the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women seeks branch member’s assistance in pinning ribbons to bookmarks for the yearly Purple Ribbon Campaign Against Violence.

This year’s theme is Consent with a slogan of “Ask: sex without consent is a crime”. Branches across PEI are working together to pin ribbons to bookmarks in bringing awareness to the theme and stopping violence against women.

To complete the Purple Ribbon Campaign, an invitation is extended to attend a special ceremony at Memorial Hall, Confederation Centre of the Arts on Friday, December 6 at 12 noon. This event and date caps off the Campaign with a candle-lighting service in remembrance of the fourteen women who were murdered during the 1989 massacre in Montreal at I’Ecole Polytechnique

and to bring awareness about violence against women and children.

To complete Centennial celebrations of PEIWI for this year, provincial President Cynthia Mitchell invites all to an informal gathering to share in the festive season spirit by taking part in a WI Christmas Treat Tree light up. A Christmas Tree, laden with treats, will be lit in the foyer of the WI Office at 40 Enman Crescent. Join in on December 3 from 2-4pm and enjoy a cup of season cheer and a candy cane from the tree. A greeting from the President will be at 2:15pm, with light up commencing at 2:20pm.

Carol Connick, PEIWI Chairperson of the Leadership and Development Committee, extends a thank you to both speakers and those in attendance during the recently held WI fall workshops.

Steve MacQuaid of the Community Foundations of PEI presented their research on exploring issues, challenges and opportunities facing Island youth.

In the second sessions Maureen Kerr spoke on Social Media inclusive of Twitter, Facebook and a host of other internet related communication prospects.

One Sunday my husband and I were leaving church and a lady we hadn’t seen before came up to us, smiling sweetly, and said, “We are having hot dogs for lunchnot fancy I know but, we would love it if you would come home with us and share a cup of tea and lunch.” Her invitation was so genuinely given we accepted it with the same spirit. A life long friendship was formed over a cup of tea and a hot dog lunch. Hospitality is a gift and warms the hearts of all who give and receive.

“Practice hospitality.” Romans 12:13 (NIV) God desires that we, His people, are sincere and hospitable with what we have been given. Sometimes people hesitate to offer just a cup of tea, thinking it is too small an offering, but getting to know each other is the more important part of the invitation. We are designed to be social and we need the company of others in our lives. God knows that! We know that!

A cup of tea offered in kindness has helped form friendships, sealed contracts, formalized plans and brought comfort to people who just needed a listening ear for whatever was happening in their lives at that moment in time. At home my parents always had the tea pot on the back of the stove and everyone who came was offered a cup of tea, a tasty of some sort and a warm welcome. The aroma of tea brewing always brings a nostalgic sense

of coming home. That’s why the coffee shops everywhere are filled with people sharing a cup of tea, (sometimes coffee), and always conversation, because everyone needs somewhere where we are welcome and have someone to talk with- even if we don’t know the person. Over the course of time we do come to know those around us and when someone is missing from the “group”, it is noticed.

One community that gives the sense of “coming home” to us is the town of Kensington.

There is a warmth there that brings us back over and over again. My wise aunt always says, “Get older, my dear, but don’t get old!” By this she means enjoy life and see the new opportunities in each day. Wise words indeed! We have two very precious friends in Kensington who are positive and smiling each time we get together- their attitude towards life is refreshing and delightful.

Jean and Mildred are living examples of real hospitality. We have shared many cups of tea, lots of tasty goodies and heart warming laughter in our conversations. These ladies inspire us to reach out to others and be open to the possibilities in making new friends. (After all they took a chance and got to know us!)

Our journey of life and faith takes us in varied directions often surrounded by people who may need just a smile or a kind look especially in the coming weeks. Life can be hectic and unset-

Christmas Concert at St. Mary’s Church

The group Friends of St. Mary’s Church, Indian River, are hosting their 2nd annual fundraising Christmas Concert in the well-known church this year on Sun., December 8th, at 2:30 p.m. .

Exciting recording artist Tim Archer, newly moved to PEI and working on restoring well-known Kensington area site Woodleigh, will be featured accompanied by several of his PEI musical friends.

And the tightly harmonizing sounds of choral group Arioso will be featured again, back by popular demand following their thrilling performance at last year’s Christmas concert.

Shown below are two photos of some of the interior work being done this past fall at St. Mary’s Chruch. In one photo Blair Martin is shown doing some of the painting.

Friends of St. Mary’s formed in 2009 with charitable status as a foundation in support of the Indian River Festival, focused on the maintenance and restoration work for the building itself.

This year the Friends have coordinated repairs and painting of the interior walls, showcasing new colours taken from news accounts of the colours from the 1902 opening of the church.

KASA grooms approximately 90 kilometers of snowmobile trails between Kensington, Rustico and Fredricton.

The tractor is a 140 horsepower 4-Wheel drive with the Soucy Track System.
