Masons PEI Bikes for Books- supporting learning and public education

Book Launch for Local Author at Heritage Library Kensington Heritage Library hosted a book launch for local author Rudy Croken for Ban the Automobile: Instrument of Death, on Saturday, May 13.

A good number turned out for the event and the response was positive.

Attendees enjoyed a meet and greet and the opportunity to hear highlights about the book from Mr. Croken.

Ban the Automobile gives the unique perspec-

tive and opposition that many in East Prince had about the introduction of automobiles on Island roads from 1900 - 1919.

The book provides the history, and issues on how the automobile’s future was viewed by rural residents on PEI. Mr. Croken noted that regardless of what side you took, the introduction of the automobile was the start of a major cultural revolution that would change Prince Ed-

ward Island society forever.

Mt Zion Lodge #12, Kensington and the Prince Edward Lodge #14, Grahams Road recently sponsored the Bikes for Books program at Queen Elizabeth Elementary School during the month of April. The program is designed to provide kids with a positive incentive for learning and to support the public education of children. The objectives are to increase reading and comprehension skills and, to recognize positive student achievements. Two bikes and helmets for grades 2 to grade 5 (1 boy, 1 girl) were donated by the two Lodges. Books also enlighten, inspire, bring happiness and success, challenge our perspectives and provide comfort at difficult times in our lives. By Andy Walker The Barn Babes from Kinkora Regional High School are the inaugural winners of the provincial Gen Ag competition.

Agriculture in the Classroom Canada and Farm Credit Canada developed Gen Ag, which saw Bluefield, submitted Westisle and Three Oaks high

schools sign up aong with Kinkora. The concept is relatively simple. Working in teams of four, the students were given $100 to develop a marketing plan geared to attracting high school students to consider careers within agriculture.

Preliminary judging was held at the four schools and three teams were chosen to advance to the provincial finals -the Barn Babes and two Bluefield entries -- the Agnators and U-Agriculture. Judges Wayne Riley, Amy Bysterveldt, and Colleen Younie chose

the Barn Babes as the inaugural champion and the team of Angela Arsenault, Hannah Larsen, Kristie Drummond and Bronwyn Roberts won $500. The Grade 12 students in the agri-science program plan to use the money to improve the program for future students.

The team made extensive use of social media, creating a Facebook page and a website. They profiled producers as well as offered information about a host of careers in the agricultural industry.

The Young Millionaires Program Celebrates 25 years of entrepreneurship “Today more than ever entrepreneurship is being encouraged as a sustainable career option.

It creates a strong economy, promotes economic growth and creates jobs,” says Karen Duffy, Provincial YMP Co-Coordinator. With the support of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), Innovation PEI, The Province of PEI, and Central Development, the Young Millionaires Program (YMP) has been offering an introduction to entrepreneurship since 1992. “We plan to celebrate with participants past and present over the summer, so stay tuned for upcoming events.”

“Congratulations to Central Development Corporation on the 25th anniversary of the Young Millionaires Program in PEI,” says the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA. “Teaching young people about business skills and entrepreneurship is an investment in Canada’s future. I wish all YMP participants the best of luck with their business ideas in 2017.”

“That is the way our generation communicates,” she said.

All four members of the team (Larsen was not able to be at the provincial competition) have a background in the industry and Roberts said she was surprised at how little many students with no farming background knew about the industry.

One revelation was the fact that many define agriculture jobs as those on the farm, which the actual range is much broader-- everything from scientists to arbourists.

“It was a lot of work, said Drummond. “It was lunch hours, after school, free periods-- basically any spare time we had.”

Teacher Jessica Reeves praised the students for the way they tackled the task, noting their list of interview subjects included Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Alan McIsaac and Andrew Campbell, who runs a social media site called Fresh Air Farmer that details life on his Ontar-

Students are encouraged to come up with innovative business ideas, develop a business plan and work on their business over the summer. Last year 167 participants started 145 businesses across the Island. One participant made over $1,000 making beach mats out of recycled fishing ropes, but success can be measured in ways other than profit.

Many participants graduate the program with a new sense of responsibility and with work experience they can put on their resume in the future.

The program requires that the participants attend four workshops designed to teach them the fundamentals of operating their own business.

The workshops provide instruction on record keeping, marketing, time management, customer service and public speaking. There is no cost to participate in the program and businesses are eligible for a non-repayable grant of up to $100 for sole proprietorships and $150 for

partnerships.

“For the past 25 years Young Millionaires has helped develop business skills in Island youth and has introduced them to the world of entrepreneurship,” Minister of Economic Development and Tourism Heath MacDonald said. “To maintain a healthy economy we need to foster and cultivate the next generation of Island entrepreneurs who will look for new markets for new products and create good jobs for Islanders.”

YMP is supported by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Innovation PEI. Central Development Corporation administers The Young Millionaires Program provincially, in partnership with RDÉE of Prince Edward Island; Start-up Charlottetown; Montague / Souris Rural Action Centre; and CBDC West Prince Ventures.

“I hope it becomes a national program,” she said. “Who is better suited to carry the message about the career prospects in agriculture to youth than their peers?”

Cowbirds and Crows Make for more Bird Tales

The following is from an email from Donnie Harris of Kensington: “Last evening before supper I was sitting at my coffee table and saw two smaller type birds land outside my windowsill..... Immediately I saw the difference between the two, the one had a brown head to the base of his neck, then black body. He was not as large as a grackle. The female was all black but lighter.

I tried to shoot a photo after they landed on the ground eating the spilled seed from the feeder.

I know the cowbird’s “system” well as my sister experienced a parasitic cowbird egg that hatched and dominated her little songbird’s nest so that the natural siblings perished. The poor little mother couldn’t keep up with feeding them all because the cowbird nestling demanded so much to eat. So, I went out and they flew off !

I was surprised to read in a recent column about a crow attacking a blue jay. Every year we watch, right on our property, the

crows raiding the robin’s and grackle’s nests, first for eggs and then secondly taking the young.

They seem to have no enemies ...although I guess the peregrine falcon and great horned owl are enemies. Here, when the call goes out, I watch them gather from all directions and gather together, flying to gain altitude. Watch their direction and you will see a raven, eagle or hawk.

They get around behind the raptor and start the chase and swooping.

Usually only the raven will engage with them in mid-flight.”

snow all winter. The fall marked the end of the vermin invasion of my basement . Why? The fact that the bark mulch that I spread a couple of years ago has disappeared may have helped.

Coupled with that is the fact that I took a long break from bird feeding. One day this week I watched a hawk glide ever so long over the field a mere 5 or so feet above the ground.

He was looking for something. Today I saw a hawk higher up gliding along with scarcely the flap of a wing. The wind must have been perfect for gliding.

Now if you have an aversion to ravens you may want to skip this section.

One day this week I had in my possession a few lumps of dried up canned cat food. I thought that I would conduct an experiment. It absolutely amazes me how fast ravens show up when certain scraps of food are tossed on the lawn. Where are they the rest of the time? How do that know that there is a picnic ready for them on

my lawn? So I decided to put the scraps on my front deck and then wait and see what would happen. In no time flat, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye!

Sure enough, there was a raven on the deck. He flew when I tried to get his picture but it wasn’t long before he was back to gather the rest of his lunch. How did he know that stuff was there????

Word to the wise If you have a new strawberry patch that you hope to get a crop off this year, you may have some questions. One might be regarding the addition of fertilizer. When spring rolls around and you take a look at your berry patch, it’s possible that it looks a bit pathetic.

Instinct says”Walk the fertilizer to it!” Don’t!

You might indeed turn it into a lovely green mass of leaves, but that might be all that you would get.

Only side dress with fertilizer if you think that there will be absolutely nothing without it. My patch is in its second bearing year and to my delight has survived the

OurSCHOOL Provincial School Survey Program 2017 Schools across PEI are implementing a provincial survey program called OurSCHOOL which involves students, teachers and parents. Surveys will run the first three weeks of May. Results will help to inform our school goals, identify successes and areas for improvement, inform policies and programs, and share information with parents and the community.

PISA stands for Program for International Student Assessment and

is an important study that measures the competencies of 15-year-old students from over 80 different countries in reading, mathematics and science.

Reading will be the major assessment this year and the assessment itself is entirely computer-based.

In preparation for PISA 2018, a field test will be conducted this month in selected schools across Canada. KISH students born in 2001 will complete this all-day assessment on Wed., May 24.

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) presented youth suicide awareness and prevention to gr 9 students on May 15 & 16. Using interactive discussions and a short video, the 80-minute program safely explores the topic of suicide with youth, outlining warning signs and ways to seek help. This program is offered to all gr 9 students in PEI and is part of the grade 8-9 health curriculum.Pat Doyle, CMHA’s Suicide Prevention Coordinator, is a trained facilitator and will present the program to students.

PEI Rural Beautification Society Encouraging Islanders To Take Part

For 72 years, the PEI Rural Beatification Society has been improving the rural landscape of our Province by encouraging Islanders to be good stewards of their properties. The Society has recently launched the 2017 Competition Book and they are now in the process of distributing the books in many areas of rural PEI. “Our Society is full of excitement this time of year” commented Executive Director, Glenn Holmes. “Last year we worked hard to promote our competitions and we were pleased that entries were up over 30%. We expect this to be another great year with even more entries”, said Holmes.

Judges will visit the properties of all the entries and they will select the overall winners.

Awards will be presented at the Annual Awards Dinner, to be held on October 25, 2017.

There are 16 different competitions, with prizes offered in all 3 counties with the overall winners capturing the Provincial Awards. $15.000 in prize money will be awarded in the following categories: Farm Home Improvement, Small Holding Improvement, New Home Completion, Community Building Improvement, Commercial Building Improvement, Tourist Accommodation Improvement, Potato Warehouse Improvement, Rural Cemetery Improvement, Home Owner’s Flower and Vegetable Gardens, Window Boxes, Mail Box/ Home Identification and Commercial Flower Gardens.

A new award we introduced in 2016 was the Reuse-Recycle-Re purpose Competition. “We received several entries and we are pleased to partner again with the Island Waste Management Corporation who sponsor this award”, said Holmes. This competition is designed to encourage home owners to take an old item that might be destined for landfill and make it shiny and new again, or by using their imagination, create something brand new and completely different.

“Almost anything can be used’, said Holmes. “The intention of this award is to save the environment while also challenging Islanders to be creative”.

Competition books are now available at all Island Access PEI Locations, Veseys Seeds, PEI Women’s Institute-Charlottetown, Belvedere Funeral Home, PEI Potato Board, TIAPEI and Island Waste Management Corporation.

How many years will a strawberry patch remain productive? If cared for diligently, books will tell you 5 years. While that is not impossible, it is rather unrealistic. Commercially, one great year and one good year used to be the norm and then they would be plowed under because it was generally not feasible to keep them over for a third crop. I don’t know how long growers tend to keep them these days.

And weather and other issues can have a bearing on this too.

Lilies You may have heard of us discuss the red lily beetles in previous years. If you have lilies in your perennial border, you would be well advised to watch for these insects. They don’t as a rule bother day lilies but Asiatic, oriental, trumpet and tiger lilies are seriously affected. Wiped out , as a rule. They can usually be found chewing away almost as soon as the first green of these plants shows through the ground. Watch for them.

PEI WWII Veteran Celebrates 100th Birthday

By Daria Valkenburg As Borden-Carleton Legion’s Branch Service Officer, one of Pieter Valkenburg’s duties is to send out sympathy and get well cards. Birthday cards? Not usually. But if a World War II veteran reaches his 100th birthday, that’s different.

When WWII veteran Austin Gaudet turned 100 on May 8, 2017, Valkenburg personally delivered birthday greetings from the Legion.

Born in Bedeque to Mosie Gaudet and Agnes Desroches, Gaudet enlisted on June 23, 1941 as a gunner and was a member of the Seventh Canadian Regiment (Canadian Artillery). Gaudet’s daughter, Sylvia Magnotta, notes “He was also a scout. It was dangerous because he was a target at all times, sometimes working alone.”

France, Italy, Germany, and Belgium, before being honourably discharged on March 29, 1946. Along the way, Gaudet fell in love with an English girl, Mabel Dudman, who was in the United Kingdom Nursing Corps.

Magnotta relates the story of their meeting....

“One night on leave, everyone was at a pub. A lot of the men had asked Mom out, but she repeatedly said NO. Dad noticed Mom and told the other men that he would like to ask her out. They laughed and bet that he would not get her to go

out with him. Dad never backed down from a bet!

So he asked Mom out.

Her response was: “You are being sent on a mission tomorrow but if you come back alive, I will go on a date with you.”

They married in England on February 9th, 1946, and all three children were born in England: Douglas, Sylvia, and Elizabeth. In 1962, they moved to Prince Edward Island. Gaudet went to work at Campbell and Burns in Bedeque, and then for the Department of Highways, where he stayed until retirement.

Town councillors voted unanimously to suspend the program during their May meeting, citing new rules put in place by the Department of Education, Early Learning and Culture requiring the program to be licensed under the Early Learning and Child Care Act (2010) as a school-age child care centre.

In a memo to council, chief administrative officer Geoff Baker said the town would have to have at least two staff who held a school-age child care provider certificate. To obtain such a certificate, a worker must take a 30-hour course related to the care and education of schoolage children, approved by the Early Learning and Child Care Board and be

“The Town would have to develop and post behavior management policies that: (a) Demonstrate a positive approach to behavior management and guidance; (b) Require behavior management to be reasonable in accordance with the circumstances and age of the child; and (c) Prohibit physical punishment, verbal or emotional abuse and denial of necessities,” Baker told council in the memo.

The program typically

operated out of the bottom floor of the Seniors Centre at the Community Gardens Complex and to a lesser extent, the rink.

Outdoor areas included the Community Gardens Complex ballfields, green spaces and the fenced in parking area at the front of the property.

Under the new regulations, the centre would require the minimum 3.5 square metres of indoor activity space per child for indoor space and a minimum of seven

2017 is a special year for Gaudet. Not only is it his centenary, but greatgrandson Austin Samuel Kelly was born March 27.

The town has received several calls wondering if the program would be offered. The memo also noted the day camp was cheaper than private child care options, primarily due to the fact that all of the staff funding came through the provincial Employment for Youth funding program. Baker added “It is felt that this puts local service providers at

a distinct disadvantage and puts the Town’s program in direct competition with private service providers.”

On another topic, Mayor Rowan Caseley noted the Kensington Heritage Library is being well used with 1,847 people have Kensington library cards last year. He said 203 programs were offered and attended by 1,096 children and adults in 2016. There were 19,991 books, DVDs, CDs, magazines checked out as well as 917 computer sessions.

As well, 165 children registered in the library’s 2016 TD Summer Reading Program.

Kensington Dancer Returns to Harbourfront in June

Paula Roberts made her debut as a dancer at the Harbourfront Theatre in Summerside to sold out crowds over ten years ago. Many years later and many experiences in Dublin, London, Toronto, New York, Las Vegas and Halifax, her journey takes her back to the Harbourfront Theatre for two shows in June.

Paula Roberts’ show Celtic Fire will feature performances by Richard Wood and well known Island artist Gordon Belsher. For more than two decades, fiddler Richard Wood has impressed audiences all across Canada, as well as in the US, Europe, Australia and Japan. With host Chris Pride of Pride in the Morning, Roberts expects the show to bring an energy to the stage that will be wildly entertaining. Pride says “I’m extremely excited to work with Paula and Richard. I’m really hoping they’re immense talent will make up for my lack of it, either way I’m looking forward to having some fun on stage and seeing these two at work.”

has evolved into an eclectic, expressive, flamenco laced, hard core Irish footwork stage performance. Roberts’ will feature a Lord of the Dance number, Breakout, using several Island step dancers who she will be master classing this month to do the chorus.

Roberts was completely humbled by an email her Manager, Heather Mountain, received from the international touring Flamenco/Fusion group Los Vivancos, who performed on Macy’s Stars of Dance segment on Dancing with the Stars.

“I managed to get a message to the group asking if they would consider having Paula perform with them.” says Mountain. Some tips for replacing windows

Home Landscaping

Replacing those old windows with ones that are more energy efficient can not only improve the look of your home but lead to reduced heating bills next winter.

A good landscaping plan is both pleasing to the eye and functional using trees, shrubs, plants, a water feautre, patio/ deck, outdoor furniture etc. that comes together to create a relaxing atmosphere. These features can help provide your family with recreation, privacy, relaxation and, add to your home’s overall value and curb appeal.

Develop a Plan Your plan can start small, with easy and doable projects. Any project becomes more attainable when you’re willing to accomplish the plan in stages.

One of the first decisions will be whether the new window will fill the same hole or a different size or style will fit the bill.Varying the size will obviously mean higher costs as some carpentry work will likely need to be done.

Then there are decisions about which style of window to use. Single or double hung windows are the most common and open and close by sliding up or down. Single hung windows open from the bottom only by sliding up, while a double hung window can be opened from either the top or the bottom.

Casement windows usually consist of one large sash that’s hinged vertically and opens by

swinging out while awning windows are hinged at the top and opened by tilting the window out from the bottom. Slider windows slide open from side to side and are an excellent choice when there is limited space outside to swing the window open.

Window frames are usually made of wood or vinyl and each choice has its pros and cons. Wood has good insulating properties but requires more maintenance, including painting treatment against moisture and rot.

Vinyl is virtually maintenance free but its insulation properties may lessen over time.

As well as contributing to heat loss, windows in poor condition can lead to water leaks, humidity problems in the home and even pest infestations.

Windows that don’t open or shut completely or that are weak or loose because of improper maintenance

or damage are good candidates for replacement.

Flashing and proper caulking may be the cheapest parts of window installation, but if

&

they’re not done with an eye to detail, the ensuing water leaks will cause a barrage of problems for both builder and buyer that could have been easily prevented.

First and formost it is important to check on what building codes/permits apply to your property.

Decide on what size shed you will need. One thing to take into consideration is to make sure the entryway to your storage building is wide enough to accommodate your largest piece of equipment with room to spare. Some shed do come with double doors, which usually eliminates this concern.

Buying an outdoor storage building with a loft greatly increases storage capability, allowing you to store rarely used supplies overhead.

Cedar is also popular and contains natural resins that make them relatively rot-resistant. Applying a sealer/ preservative to protect it is recommended. Vinyl is often a cost and maintenance-free alternative and comes in a variety of color options. Metal storage units are a rust-free choice.

For those who are handy and wish to save money another option is Do-It-Yourself Outdoor Storage Buildings. These come in an assortment of sizes, colors and designs and are easily available from your local home improvement stores.

Some outdoor storage sheds come with double doors, cupolas and French doors, window boxes, shutters or weathervanes.

Area House Home Services Make sure to choose the right paint for the job Painting, whether inside or out, is a major project, so choosing the right paint for the job is the key to making sure it lasts for years.

Outdoor paint must stand up not only to the elements but everything from dust to car exhaust.

Exterior latex paint is designed to create a durable, non-stick surface, and easy-to-clean surface.

Earth-tone paints containing natural colorants (ex: red and yellow oxides) fare better in the sun than do those with artificial coloration. To

help protect from water damage, the best bet is a paint that penetrates deep into the wood.

One of the biggest issues when it comes to painting areas like bathrooms and laundry rooms is finding paint designed to repel mildew.

The best bet is paint with a stain and moisture resistant finish.

For less-than-perfect walls, matte finishes can help hide imperfections but a glossy base is the best bet to protect against fingerprints or dirt. If brightening up the room is the goal be sure to avoid dark colors and go for a satin or semi-

gloss finish; the sheen will help to reflect light and brighten up a dim room.

Here is a look at some paint terms: Latex Paint: Often called “acrylic latex” because it contains a plastic resin made of acrylics or polyvinyls to help it adhere better Oil-Based Paint: Commonly used on molding, cabinets and furniture.

It provides a protective coating and creates a smoother finish than water-based paint.To tell whether your current wall color is water- or oil-based, douse a white cloth with rubbing alcohol and rub it on the wall (in an out-of-the-way spot). If the paint softens and begins to transfer onto the cloth, it is water based. If the alcohol does not remove any color, it is oil-based.

Primer: Used to seal bare surfaces and provide a base for paint to grab on to.

Sheen: A paint’s sheen gives it a certain finish and quality. There are

several options: Matte/Flat -- Smooth finish, has little or no sheen. Helps hide surface imperfections but may suffer damage more easily than other finishes.

Best for low-traffic areas.

Eggshell -- Velvety sheen, easy to clean.

Great middle-of-the-road option between flat and high gloss. Gives a flatter look than glossy paint but still provides hardwearing and protective coating.

Satin -- Silky, pearl-like finish, stain-resistant.

Creates protective shell that resists moisture and mildew. Good for kitchens, bathrooms and hightraffic areas.

Semigloss -- Sleek, radiant and high resistance to moisture. Good for cabinets, doors and windows.

High Gloss -- Very durable and easy to clean.

Its glass-like finish makes it good for trim and molding.

Finding the Right Tools Which type of paintbrush is best?: Use a

nylon-bristle brush for water-based paint and natural bristles for oilbased paint. Foam brushes are good for intricate work such as painting molding or window casings.

Cleaning Paintbrushes: Use soap and water to clean latex paint off the

brush immediately after painting. For oil-based paints, you’ll need a solvent such as paint thinner or mineral spirits.

Pour about two inches of thinner into a metal container and swirl the dirty brush in it until the paint comes off.

Cabinets can provide both beauty and additional storage apace for a kitchen. An open cabinet can transform the spirit of your kitchen, making it more airy and interesting.

As for surviving while those renovations are in progress, perhaps think about a portable fridge, a camp stove or barbeque (depending on the season) and lots of paper plates and takeout. Think of it as camping without leaving home.

Grant Received for Better Communication With Hard of Hearing Daria Valkenburg As a small organization, the PEI Chapter of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association doesn’t always have the funds to do all the needed outreach and advocacy projects. So the Chapter members were thrilled to learn that that they were one of the recipients of a New Horizons for Seniors Program grant to develop a project that focuses on seniors. Studies show that seniors are most at risk to become socially isolated due to hearing loss.

It’s exhausting and can be both embarrassing and frustrating to constantly ask people to repeat themselves. Going to events such as concerts, church services, parties, can be a nightmare when it’s difficult to understand what is being said. In many instances, it’s easier to stay home, no matter how lonely.

The problem with that is that social isolation can lead to other health related issues, including depression.

While there are various solutions, one way

As Brenda Porter, CHHA PEI VicePresident explains: “Our CHHA PEI Chapter has heard officially that we have received a $12,115 federal New Horizons for Seniors Program grant for our proposed project ‘Pardon, What Did You Say?’ - A Guide for Navigating Our Hard of Hearing World. Wonderful news!

Our plan includes producing a user-friendly, large print, and inspirational booklet that will be a valuable tool for those who are hard of hearing and for the people with whom they communicate in their homes and communities. The

booklet will include a range of simple tips and strategies for communicating in a variety of settings and also personal experiences that readers can identify with. During Fall 2017 there will be community-based seminars across the island at seniors’ centres, etc. as part of the launch.

Having a hearing disability is a key reason why people, many of whom are seniors, withdraw from social activities in the community and become isolated. This island-wide project is designed to give them, and those with whom they interact, simple strategies for talking with others both in their homes and in their communities.”

Chapter members are currently developing this booklet, and collecting stories, tips, and challenges that have been overcome.

Lauretta Balderston free-lance writer Some days seem to be specially made for complaining about everything that is not going as we planned! When we are challenged about our endless complaints, then we become argumentative. The Bible has a verse for that- Philippians 2:1415. (God really knew, and knows, His people!)

While in Quebec recently we had a wonderful opportunity to take a horse and carriage ride through Old Quebec. The day was perfect- sunny and warm. The sidewalk cafes were crowded with people of all ages wanting to slough off the last of the winter dreary and just soak up the sun!

Sidewalks were filled with shoppers- some buying, some browsing and others just meandering along in no rush to be anywhere in particular.

What a pleasant day to be alive and doing something unusual for two folk from PEI! Our driver, Jack, was giving the history of the surrounding buildings and the Plains of Abraham; people were taking pictures of the horse-drawn carriage as it passed slowly along the crowded and narrow streets of Old Quebec. The horses know by heart which streets and turns to take and so the driver pays little attention to the horse most of the time. However when the sidewalk cafes are filled with people enjoying their lunch, drink on a sunny afternoon, the drivers are asked to not pass right by them- in case of an “accident” by the horse. Well our horse, Tom, was having none of this! He tried to resist being re-directed to another route and loudly made his disapproval known to all within hearing distance. He struggles to keep on his regular route and Jack really had to pull on the reins and talk to Tom reminding him of who was in charge.

All the way down that

street Tom kept up his complaining and shook his head in disbelief that he had to listen when he had other ideas- his! The whole experience was memorable and lovely but also instructive.

How many times do we challenge the path God has chosen for us and we make our disapproval loudly known in word and deed. But God knows the plans He has for us: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV). God knows us better than we think we know ourselves.

Stubborn is as stubborn does was a well used phrase in our family when three head strong girls wanted to get their own way- in direct contrast to what mom or dad wanted and expected from us. Our journey may take us along some difficult paths and we may often question the reson for the struggles, but god has everything all worked. He will not ask us to do what is going to harm us or cause us grief although should we choose to not listen we do have to accept the consequences of our decision!

These days whenever I am about to complain about something, I see Tom shaking his head and mumbling because he didn’t get his own way.

Then I smile and give it all to God- who has better vison than I for seeing way ahead of whatever path He me walking and for whatever task He has me doing. I am reminded of that verse in Colossians 3:23- “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the lord, not for men.” (NIV).

“Work hard and cheerfully at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” Colossians 3:23 (NLT) A challenge indeed for all of us in all things!

Recently visiting a garden centre in Summerside, I met an old friend who is also a really good gardener. Talking together he said he now teaches gardening in west Island schools and the the students are really enthusiastic about his classes.

This is a positive thing that the schools have done, to bring back the interest and the stages of learning about gardening. In the long run the students will find that they want to try things out in the earth, build the compost piles..do things for themselves. So there will be digging, planting and later weeding and triumph when they students can bring in vegetables for the family to eat.

Perhaps we might discuss the idea and see if we might extend it...villages might look to see if they have a small piece of land to start to grow things. You need a small piece of earth in full sun...that way you can

Anything you grow gives you that wonderful thing - experience- so that you can do better next year.

Tips for maintaining a lush green lawn Here are some tips to turn those patches of brown into a prime manicured lawn worthy of a magazine spread.

The first step is to rake up dead and dying grasses called thatch. While some thatch is good for lawns, too much can stifle growth.

Over time, the soil becomes compacted, reducing the air pockets that allow nutrients and water to reach the roots of the grass. To combat this, make sure your lawn is aerated annually and spring is the best time to act so you lawn has the best chance to the receive the nutrients and water it needs.

As lawns age, grass reproduction rates slow down. Spread grass seed over your entire lawn at the recommended rate once the last snow has disappeared. New grass will pop up and fill in those unhealthy spots.

Now that the lawn is properly aerated and over seeded, an application of fertilizer at the beginning of spring will help give your lawn a head-start and one during late spring will help feed your grass as it hits its peak growing season

When it comes time to mow, the first step is to sharpen the mower blade. A dull blade will tear the grass, rather than cut it, and it will make your lawn more susceptible to disease and may cause it to turn a dull brown colour.

The first few mowings should be done with your mower set on a lower setting. This allows sun, water, and nutrients to get to the base of your grass to help it get started . How often you need to mow is determined by how fast your grass grows.

We all know that a diagonal cut looks fancy, but did you know that mixing up your mowing direction is actually good for your lawn? By mowing in varied directions you ensure a more uniform cut, an upright

growth pattern and reduce soil compaction.

The best time to water the lawn is early in the morning, when the sun is starting to rise, so less water is lost to evaporation.

A healthy lawn needs soil with a balanced pH level, usually between five to seven, depending on the type of grass. If the pH level is too high (alkaline), you can add sulfate with a broadcast spreader. If your pH level is too low (acidic), you can add lime the same way.

Weed and feed is a spring ritual for many lawn enthusiasts but beware of overdoing it.

Late spring is the best time to do this; just make sure you actually have a major weed problem before treating your entire lawn.

Crapaud Fire Dept Hockey Tournament Raises Funds for ALS Society of PEI

A firemen’s hockey tournament held in March at the South Shore Arena raised $7,200 for the ALS Society of Prince Edward Island. This was the second year the Crapaud Fire Department staged the event and they have raised $15,500 over two years. Fire Chief Chris Paynter (left) and firemen David Walsh (center) and Randy Shaw, present the cheque to ALS board members Cindy Warren (second left) and Maxine Holmes. Shaw, who is the department’s public relations officer and tournament coordinator said teams from Crapaud, New London, Vernon River, New Glasgow, Tyne Valley and Kinkora took part in the event. Vernon River has captured the tournament title both years. Shaw is hoping the event will continue to grow in 2018 and beyond.

Ingredients

1 pkg (20 oz) refrigerated red potato wedges 4 hot dogs 1 small onion, cut into wedges 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (heavy-duty foil)

4-H Members Spring Up to Clean-Up doing their part by participating by helping with their community clean-up

Directions Divide potato wedges among four pieces of heavy-duty foil (about 18 in. square).

Top each with a hot dog, onion wedges and cheese.

Drizzle with barbecue sauce.

Fold foil around mixture, sealing tightly.

Grill, covered, over medium heat 10-15 minutes or until heated through. Open foil carefully to allow steam to escape. 4 servings.

Berry and Banana Terrine Ingredients 2 envelopes (1/4 ounce each) unflavored gelatin 2 cups white grape juice 1/2 cup white granulated sugar 6 cups of mixed fresh berries and slices of banana (berries can include boysenberries, sliced strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries) Directions • Put 1/4 c white grape juice into a small bowl.

Sprinkle the gelatin over the white grape juice and let sit for 2 to 3 minutes while the gelatin softens.

• Put 1/4 c of grape juice and the 1/2 c of sugar into a saucepan and heat on medium high heat until the sugar has dissolved.

Remove from heat and stir in the gelatin mixture until it has dissolved. Stir in the remaining 1 1/2 c of grape juice.

• Put the berries and banana slices in a 4x8 loaf pan. Pour the grape juice mixture over the berries, and press down on the berries to submerge them into the juice/gelatin mixture.

• Cover with plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator until firm, 3 hours.

• To un-mold, fill a basin half-way with hot water.

Carefully lower the bottom of the loaf pan into the hot water and hold for 5 seconds. This will melt the gelatin at the edge of the pan, helping it to release.

Place a serving platter topside down on top of the loaf pan and turn the whole thing over. Shake a little to release the mold.

This past weekend the Albany Centennial 4-H Club participated in the Women’s Institute Roadside Cleanup. The club enjoyed pizza, chocolate milk and ice cream sandwiches before over 30 4-H members and parents headed out to clean the roadside in the village of Albany and along the the TransCanada at the Albany Y. The club expressed thanks to Dairy Farmers of PEI for donating the milk and ice cream sandwiches.

Town of Kensington Cleanup On Saturday, May 13, a group of 25 volunteers, including 5 Council members and staff, gathered at the Kensington Town Hall to help with the town clean-up.

Armed with collection bags, volunteers spent time Saturday cleaning up throughout Kensington. The clean-up shows that working together can make a difference.
