2nd Annual KISH High School Hockey Tournament Underway On Monday, April 4 Donald Mulligan, Principal of Kensington Intermediate Senior High Welcomed everyone to the 2nd Annual KISH High School Hockey Tournament at the Community Gardens Complex in Kensington.

Mulligan went on to say how pleased they were to have Scotiabank Kensington as their main sponsor, without whose support they would not be able to continue with

this tournament.

He also acknowledged and thanked the High School Hockey committee made up of staff from KISH who have been planning the tournament for months and, to the staff who will be putting in a great deal of hours volunteering throughout the week.

Thanks was also extended to the County Line Courier Community Newspaper for putting together

a great program for the tournament, Mike Smith for taking photos and to Elizabeth Burt for singing the national anthem.

Mulligan welcomed Cindy Doucette from Scotiabank Kensington who brought greeting on behalf of Scotiabank and to Deputy Mayor Rodney Mann from the Town of Kensington who, along with the two team captains, dropped the puck for the ceremonial opening face-off.

Area Army Cadet Takes Home Gold in ZONES Marksmanship Competition

“The 1231 Army Cadets recently participated in the “Zones” marksmanship competition March 19th. MWO Carter Moase took home a gold in the open category with his score of 362 out of a possible 400 points, including a 99/100 target. Moase has been an active marksman at the local level for years and through his hard work, he got the chance to represent Canada in England at an international competition last summer, where he also earned a gold medal. Two Masted Schooner Founders at Carleton Point

a little bit of folklore from the Borden-Carleton area

This story was told to me some 40 years ago by the late local historian, Joe MacDonald of Borden-Carleton, locally known as “Long Joe” because of his six foot plus lanky frame where he

stood tall over all of us.

He knew many nautical stories about this area, Rum Running Days, Ship Wrecks and the like. His favourite ending to a story was; “and that’s the God’s truth”.

Whether it was ‘the God’s truth’ will be left for other historians to prove but when he repeated a tale it was always the same, he left nothing out but maybe, just maybe he would inject something that wasn’t in the saga earlier.

“It was 1932, I was just a boy living in Cape Traverse. Rum Running was slowly coming to an end but we often saw schooners sailing up and down the strait, never knowing the contents of their cargo. Coal from Cape Breton and lumber from the Miramichi were the ‘supposed-to-be’ cargoes and once in a while you would see a schooner laden with puncheons of molasses from Jamaica.

The two-masted schooner, The Cumberland, foundered off Carleton Point. Carleton Point is where Borden is. The crew of 8 men all made it ashore in the dark of night and came across a cave. [This cave had been there on the Borden shoreline for years, a favourite swimming hole for kids, but it fell in a few years ago].

The men settled in the cave, lit a fire for warmth

and, with no electronic gear those days, they could only guess where they were. The big question was how they managed to get from the ship over those monstrous waves crashing the shore. The winds, a strong SouEaster with strikes of lightening illuminating the black sky sending crashes of thunder to the ground.

At dawn’s light the men in the cave walked to the shoreline only to find their vessel completely smashed to pieces from being pounded against the large rocks. The mast poles were gone, there was nothing left of the ship but some of the cargo, it was floating from the ship to shore. Here were hundreds of casks of rum from St Pierre-

Miquelon floating along the shore. Now, it didn’t take long for the locals to learn of this ‘cache’ of goodies lining the shore.

And it didn’t take long for what reached shore to be picked up by the locals.

The men in the cave made haste from the scene, we don’t know their names but we assume they were from the French islands, we’ll really never know, and that’s the God’s truth”, Joe said.

How did the men get from ship-to-shore midst the storm? A guardian angel of one of them is said to have seen they all got on terra firma from the doomed ship.

Rayner Hoping To See Proposed Highway Changes Soon

by Andy Walker As far as Ron Rayner is concerned, changes to the major highway that run though his community are long overdue.

“There have been 20 people killed since they changed the highway in 1956 and a lot of those have been over the past few years,” said the chair of the Municipality of Bedeque and Area.

Rayner said he met with the Transportation Minister Paula Biggar shortly after she assumed the post last summer and was promised he would receive the department’s plan for changes to two intersections-- one at the meeting of Route 1A and Route 10 and the other at Route 1A, Dunk River Road and Callbeck Street.

He actually didn’t see the plans until March-- in fact, it was just three days before they were scheduled to go out to tender.

After he contacted the minister, the tender was put on hold and a public meeting to explain the proposed changes was held instead.

Rayner said the recent meeting attracted close to 50 people, and he said there was little support for the idea of a roundabout. He added “there was a good cross-section of the population there and there were some excellent concerns and suggestions brought up. I am looking forward to seeing what changes the department may be making.”

The council chair said he was not given any indication when he might see the revised plans or when any tenders might

be issued. A news release from Biggar commenting on the meeting indicates the work is expected to take six to eight weeks and be completed during the 2016 construction season.

He noted one of the major concerns is the need for a merging lane for trucks coming on to Route 1A from the Dunk River Road. Rayner said there are approximately 7000 loads of potatoes coming through that road each year and the lack of a merging lane interrupts the flow of traffic and increases the risk of collisions. The release from Biggar’s office indicates the department plans to realign the intersection of Route 1A and Route 10 in order to create a T intersection.

World Health Day April 7 Beat Diabetes Key messages WHO (World Health Organization) is focusing the next World Health Day on diabetes because: 1. The diabetes epidemic is rapidly increasing in many countries, with the documented increase most dramatic in low- and middle-income countries.

2. A large proportion of diabetes cases are preventable. Simple lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. Maintaining normal body weight, engaging in regular physical activity, and eating a healthy diet can reduce the risk of diabetes.

3. Diabetes is treatable. Diabetes can be controlled and managed to prevent complications.

Increasing access to diagnosis, self-management education and affordable treatment are vital components of the response.

4. Efforts to prevent and treat diabetes will be important to achieve the global Sustainable Development Goal 3 target of reducing premature mortality from noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) by one-third by 2030. Many sectors of society have a role to play, including governments, employers, educators, manufacturers, civil society, private sector, the media and individuals themselves.

A Season First - The Red-winged Blackbirds

Most days now I see a welcome sight on the front lawn – red-winged blackbirds! I love to listen to the tinkling music of their voices as they gather up sunflower seeds. For me that well and truly means that spring is here. They usually show up with the starlings and are scratching in the dead grass looking for bugs? Seeds? And where have they been all winter?

I checked to see what the Audubon Nature Encyclopedia had to say about these birds. They tell us that the males return first – mid-March, and the females arrive a month or so later. By this time the males have each chosen for themselves a territory. The nests, which they say are rather poorly built, are built entirely by the females.

It appears, however, that the male hovers around, offering her encouragement as she works. I wonder if he criticizes her work, for it sounds as if there could be room for improvement?

The red-winged blackbirds typically nest in colonies in marshes but they may also settle in pasture or brushland.

There are some acres of marshy land in this community and having visits from these birds is a positive spinoff from that!

Today the grackles showed up too – those sleek black birds with their beady little eyes!

Still awaiting robins, although my harbinger of spring is the red -winged blackbird. And they have arrived. YAY! Think spring!”

Graves: “I have always hung three bird feeders with black oil sunflower seed. I read that the birds prefer them to striped as the shells are softer and easier to crack. For sure I have found dozens of these little flying buttercups (summer - coloured male goldfinches) year round including in winter but especially when the ground is covered with snow.

With warmer(?) weather coming I have observed a fox sparrow digging around on the ground under one of my feeders near my back door. Also, the other day after the snowfall and with high winds, I saw easily 100 (maybe more) birds on the snow near my far backyard feeder. This area is protected from large birds of prey by several pine and overgrown fruit trees. I figured the wind blowing the feeder dumped a sizable quantity of seed on the ground. There was almost an even number of red - winged blackbirds, starlings, grackles and mourning doves.

Our first winter here (this is #3) we enjoyed 6 Hungarian partridges eating my cracked corn all winter. The mourning doves are the only others that eat it as well. Last winter and this - no partridges.

Great to get your email, Brenda and I am sure that there are many others who, like us, look forward to the return of the red-winged blackbirds.

I too favor the black oil sunflower seeds as a bird feed but judging by the size of the bags of gray striped sunflower seeds that I see for sale, someone evidently favors the latter. I have harbored a notion, rightly or wrongly, that the blue jays prefer the gray striped seeds and so I buy black oil.

Maybe that’s not kind of me but I feel that the blue jays take more than they really need.

There is something extra special about having a flock of Hungarian partridge around – skittering as they go over the snow’s crust, only flying when it is absolutely necessary. The partridge and the snow buntings are both special winter visitors.

Bird Count I heard from Marguerite Bell of Montague: “I feed the birds over the winter/spring and they all have their arrival times throughout the day.

On March 16: a very large flock of perhaps 70 to 80 cedar waxwings arrived and dined on orange ash

berries which were strewn over the front lawn. It was an amazing sight!

On a daily basis, we also have chipping sparrows, downy woodpeckers, rock doves (pigeons -blue/ white and brown/white – very beautiful coloring), juncos(about 10-12), American goldfinches still in their winter color, several black-capped chickadees, 12+ blue jays, 4 crows and starlings. Then on March 20th, 30 red-winged blackbirds. Lots of visitors as you can see!”

Thank you Marguerite for the interesting bird count! It sounds very much like the crew that frequents my feeders these days. However, I have no pigeons but several mourning doves.

Rare Visitor This note is from Delmar Connick of Spring Valley: “I finally have some doves around. I’ve had a brown thrasher around all winter. It is the state bird of the state of Georgia. Just wondering if any other bird feeders have had one? I presently have about 40 finches, but not on a daily basis.”

Upcoming PEI Family Earth Expo The 6th Annual Family Earth Expo will take place on Saturday April 23rd from 1 to 4 pm at the PEI Farm Centre, 420 University Avenue (next to CBC). The Expo, organized by PEI Sierra Club, is an all-ages event with art and nature activities; information booths by green businesses and environmental groups; live music; art show; food; workshops on environmental action and awareness and much more.

Many hundreds of Islanders have taken part in the Earth Week Expos since the inaugural Expo in 2011.

Among new activities this year will be a Wild Child ‘Nature Immersion Workshop’ for adults and children together. Plus Robert van Warden will be doing a presentation on Climate Action and the Energy East pipeline, including his collection of photographs that is presently touring across Canada.

Information booths include the Fox Club Society; Ducks Unlimited; City of Charlottetown Sustainability Office and Parks; PEI Wildlife Display; Dizolve Eco-laun-

dry detergent; Ellen’s Creek Watershed Group; Storybook Adventures; Sperenza Sport and Family Programs and many others still to be confirmed.

There will be an art show and guided art activities, including the perennial favourite ‘Clothesline Art’ and face-painting; seed planting; UPEI volunteers will have ‘Let’s Talk Science’ activity tables; PEI Wildlife will be displayed; and nutritious food will be available from Simple Feast Catering.

Given good weather, there will be activities in the Farm Centre Legacy Garden, ‘explore a wetland’ near the Farm Centre with Ducks Unlimited, and electric vehicles (EVs) outside with their owners to answer questions.

The Eco-tunes Concert takes place during the Expo with live music featuring The Fresh Air Inspectors, The Rubbish Butterflies, and Musicman Michael Pendergast.

“One and all are invited to come share positive energy and learn about lifestyle changes and technologies that can

lead to a ‘greener’ PEI,” states lead organizer Tony Reddin. “The Expo promises to be lots of fun and a great learning experience for young families and everyone interested in environmental action and awareness.”

Chocolaty Peanut Butter Whoopie Pies Ingredients 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 cup hot water 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup white sugar 1 cup butter 1 egg 1 tablespoon butter 1 3/4 cups confectioners’ sugar 1/4 cup peanut butter 1/2 cup milk Directions Cream together 1 cup of the butter and the egg.

Add 1 cup white sugar, vanilla and hot water.

Stir in the flour, cocoa, and baking soda and mix well.

Drop from a teaspoon onto cookie sheets and bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 10 to 12 minutes.

Sandwich cookies together with Peanut Butter Frosting.

Peanut Butter Frosting: Blend 1 tablespoon butter and peanut butter.

Stir in confectioners’ sugar and add enough milk to make frosting soft enough to spread.

Spread between the flat sides of two cookies and sandwich together.

If you share it makes 6 servings!

Lemon Squares Ingredients 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2/3 cup confectioners’ sugar 3/4 cup butter or margarine, softened 3 eggs 1 1/2 cups white sugar 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/3 cup confectioners’ sugar for decoration Directions Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.

Combine the flour, 2/3 cup confectioners’ sugar, and butter. Pat dough into prepared pan.

Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, until slightly golden. While the crust is baking, whisk together eggs, white sugar, flour, and lemon juice until frothy. Pour this lemon mixture over the hot crust.

Return to the preheated oven for an additional 20 to 25 minutes, or until light golden brown.

Cool on a wire rack.

Dust the top with confectioners’ sugar.

Cut into squares.

Breakfast Shake to Go! for lovers of peanut butter and jam Ingredients 2 cups milk 1 ripe banana, sliced 2 tablespoons peanut butter 2 tablespoons jam, jelly or preserves (any flavor) 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions Place all of the ingredients in a blender; blend for 3 minutes or until smooth. Serve cold.

Kensington Council Considers Emergency Measures Plan

Andy Walker Editor, Island Farmer/Freelance journalist President, Canadian Association of Journalist, PEI Vice president, Atlantic Farm Writers Association Councillors in Kensington considered a draft of an emergency measures plan during a recent committee of council meeting.

Under the committee format, adopted by the municipality earlier this year items are usually for discussion only with a recommendation going forth to the monthly meeting. The draft plan is designed to develop a formal procedure in the event the town faces an emergency.

The proposed plan notes the town has the prime responsibility for responding to any emergency, although they are able to call on a number of other resources including the provincial emergency measures organization and fire departments that have a mutual aid agreement with Kensington.

The list of emergencies laid out in the document plans for virtually

every eventuality including “disease, pestilence, fire, flood, tempest, explosion, accident, attack or sabotage which endangers property, the environment or the health, safety or welfare of the civil population.”

The bylaw calls for the appointment of an emergency measures coordinator (David Elliot has already been named to the position) and an emergency committee of various town departments. The mayor (or the deputy mayor in their absence) would have the authority to declare an emergency. If they were absent, an emergency could be declared by any three members of council plus the CAO and the police chief. It would also go into effect if a provincial emergency was declared.

The bylaw lays out the responsibilities and chain of command with managers working

under the emergency measures coordinator to look after things like administrative services, transportation, communications, public information, health services, fire, public works, police, social services, food and clothing distribution and lodging. Most of the individuals who would fulfill those roles have also been identified.

Councillors also discussed a request from the Kensington and Area Chamber of Commerce to coordinate efforts on

a website promoting the town as a business destination. In a letter to the town, Membership and Events Coordinator Jessica Caseley said the website could include such information as available locations for rent or purchase, tax rates, permits required and information about the town and surrounding area.

She wondered if the town would be willing to pay the cost of setting up the site, with the chamber looking after the ongoing management.

Clean up Season Will Soon Be Here March can be unpredictable. When there is no fear of snow or frost remove burlap or wrapping from trees and shrubs.

Prune away winter-killed branches to make room for new growth. Cut back spent perennials and pull up any old annuals. Take stock of your yard and see if it’s time to thin out crowded beds and do some transplanting to fill in bare spots.

Using a pair of sharp pruners prune flowering perennials to a height of 4–5 inches and ornamental grasses to 2–3 inches to allow new growth to

shoot up. Where soil has thawed, dig up perennials, such as daylilies and hostas, to thin crowded beds; divide them, leaving at least three stems per clump, and transplant them to fill in sparse areas. Cut back winterdamaged rose canes to 1 inch below the blackened area. On climbers, keep younger green canes and remove older woody ones; neaten them up by bending the canes horizontally and tipping the buds downward. Use jute twine or gentle Velcro fasteners to hold the canes in place.

Registration for the upcoming 2016 baseball season will take place at Kensington Community Gardens on: • April 16th 9:00am-2:00pm • April 20th 6:00pm-9:00pm • April 23rd 9:00am-2:00pm Registration Fees for 2016: Rally Cap $50.00 (Players born 2008-09-10) Minor Ball $150.00 (Players born 2007 and before) Players must be registered prior to any practices/tryouts.

Baseball Coaches: KAMBA is accepting applications from those who would like to coach in our association in the upcoming season.

Rake out fallen leaves and dead foliage (which can smother plants and foster disease). Once the threat of frost has passed remove existing mulch to set the stage for a new layer once spring planting is done. Push heaved plants back into flower beds and borders, tamping them down around the base with your foot, or use a shovel to replant them. Now is a good time to spread a pelletized fertilizer tailored to existing plantings on the soil’s surface so that spring rains can carry it to the roots. Add a 5-10-10 fertilizer around bulbs as soon as they flower to maximize bloom time and feed next season’s growth.

Prep Damaged Lawn Areas for Spring Seeding by removing turf damaged by salt, plows, or disease to prepare for the seeding. Work in a ½-inch layer of compost to keep the new seed moist, increasing the germination rate. March is a good time to add the first dose of fertilizer and crabgrass treatment.

Remove dead turf with a square metal rake, then flip it over to spread compost.

Kensington and Area Syrian Refugee Committee Fill Me Change Collection Cans Campaign Update

Kensington, PEI): Over ten thousand dollars, and counting--the committee helping to bring a Syrian refugee family to Kensington PEI says they have passed a major milestone in their fundraising work to make sure they have enough money to support a refugee family “We recently received a major donation from the Malpeque Bay Credit Union of $1,000” said Francis. “And that’s over and above their kindness in serving as a drop-off location for anyone who wants to make a donation. The Credit Union is a community-driven organization, and continues to support local initiatives and people.”

Francis says the Kensington and Area Refugee Sponsorship Committee (KARSI) is within sight of the $15,000 it has set as the minimum to bank before it will commit to clearing a family to get on a plane to PEI. “Our ultimate goal is $30,000, the basic amount needed to support a family for the year of their sponsorship, and we’re following the immigration department’s recommendations that we have at least half of that ready to draw on, before the family leaves to come here.

“We are working pretty hard to get there,” according to Patricia Bennett, KARSI co-chair.

“We started our business community appeal last week, we will be making change collection cans available to any person or business who wants them--while large donations are wonderful, we appreciate every loonie people can give.”

And Bennett is excited about a raffle the group has set up. “It’s for a gorgeous hand-made quilt, valued at over $900, that has been donated by Robin Petty, of Petty Quilt Junction in Long River.

The tickets for that are flying out the door!”

The draw for the quilt will be made at the next public meeting on Monday April 18th, at 7 pm at the Kensington Lion’s Club. Tickets are priced at $5 each, or three for $10, and can be bought from April Ramsay, a member of KARSI’s fundraising committee, by calling 902-439-6536.

And KARSI members are focussing on more than just fundraising.

Well, they say that time flies by when you’re having fun, well we can certainly say this to be true for us at Kensington Community Care. March gave us five weeks and it went by like two.

We had two birthday celebrations in March, Hazel MacKenzie and Clara Rushton added another year in their journey of life.

Our Faith Community continues to nourish us each week. We thank Rev. Robert McCarthy and choir, Rev. Frank Jay and his musical talent, and Rev. Pix Butt and choir.

Thanks also to Barb Moase who came and shared the Easter story and helped us all to create a Cross which we used at our Good Friday service lead by Carol Evans.

Robert and Kathleen Milner came and helped draw (no pun intended) out talents that were hidden and, with some paint and a few swipes with a brush we ended up with beautiful art creations that we proudly display in our rooms.

Lauretta Balderston free-lance writer The large trees were laden with lots of red berries and often we would comment to each other on what kind of berries these were and why were the berries always so red and fresh looking in the winter. On the coldest days the berries looked their brightest and reddest, like they were waiting to fulfill their God-given destiny. One afternoon while we were leaving a friend’s home in Kensington, these berry laden trees were filled with little crested birds having the feast of their lives. The boughs were literally bowed under the weight of so many little hungry birds. This was our “a-ha” moment. God had made these berries for such a time as this- to feed those hungry birds who must have known there would be a source of food because they knew where to come and when to come to get their bellies filled.

What a beautiful picture, (had we taken the camera), watching all the birds arriving one after the other and taking their place on the branches to enjoy their feast. God had provided for His little creatures faithfully for so many years. When they arrived the meal was ready! What an eye opener for we who tend to forget that God knows all about us and what we need, just when we need it!

Sometimes we are so consumed by meeting the needs of the family and others that we feel weighted down and burdened.

Our minds go into overdrive and we forget the fact the God knows what we need. All we really need to do is ask and He is ready

to provide our needs. “Of how much more value are you than the birds?” Luke 12:24a (NKJV) “And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind.

Your Father knows that you need these things.”

Luke 12:29, 30b (NKJV) We live in anxious times and our minds can become crowded with expectations we put on ourselves and expectations others place upon us.

Then worries, followed by fear that we are never going to accomplish all that we have to get done, leave us depleted and discouraged. This is exactly the time we need to look up- and look to our God to give us the strength to get out from under all this weight of frustration and stress. He has promised to provide to us what we need when we need it most. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:19 (NKJV) What if we could be like those trusting little birds who knew their needs were being met long before their arrival.

They had only to show up and take advantage of the provision. God is waiting for us to trust Him enough to show up, ask for His guidance and let Him provide all we need. What blessings we can expect this week, and the rest of this year, if we will learn to walk in faith and trust!

March was a busy month at KHL! We are moving around some things and want to thank you for your patience as we improve the use of our space! Thank you so much to all of the volunteers who have helped speed along the process!

Ten brand new library cards were issued this month and in February, close to 1500 items were checked out!

We are thrilled to have assisted several students to locate materials for their Heritage Fair projects. There are going to be some cool projects, including, Shipwrecks, Ghost Stories and Legends of PEI, The Toronto Raptors and more!

The Friends of the Kensington Heritage Library will be holding a regular book sale at King George Place, 61 Broadway Street (across from KENT Building Supplies). The book sale room will be open every
