April is the Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Month
Kinkora Regional High School is one of the regional finalists in a national contest designed to help teach students about the environment. The Superpower Your School Contest is sponsored by Staples and Earth Day Canada and encourages participating schools to develop innovative environmental programs. Kinkora and Three Oaks Senior High in Summerside were chosen among the top 100 in the first round of the competition. Both schools will now advance to the second stage of the competition, which will see ten schools from five different re-
gions selected to receive $25,000 each towards the purchase of new technology from Staples Canada. The winners will be announced April 22. “Our judges were blown away by the quality and scale of some of the eco programs that these schools are implementing,” said Mary Sagat, president of Staples Canada. “Their passion for making a difference is inspiring. We thank all of the schools who entered the contest and congratulate the 100 finalists for their outstanding commitment to doing their part to improve the environment.” Now in its seventh consecutive year, the contest
saw more than 700 entries from publicly funded elementary and secondary schools across Canada. Earth Day Canada a national environmental charity founded in 1990, provides Canadians with the practical knowledge and tools they need to lessen their impact on the environment. “It’s been amazing to see the level of innovation and creative thinking happening in our schools,” said Deb Doncaster, president of Earth Day Canada. “The next generation of environmental leaders are very dedicated to the cause, and they’re ready to take action now.”

Money raised during this annual campaign helps people with cancer right here in PEI. With the donations we receive, CCS funds a wide variety of activities, including education, advocacy, research and support services so that fewer Canadians will be affected by cancer. Did you know that 2017 marks 60 years since the first daffodils were sold to support the work of CCS? Funds raised through daffodil sales have helped increase the cancer survival rate from 25% in the 1940s to over 60% today. But there is still so much work to be done. In 2016, an estimated 380 Islanders died of cancer, and 910 new cases were diagnosed. By buying daffodil flowers or pins, you are showing others in the community that ending cancer is important to you and that you have joined the fight. Donations during Daffodil Month do not have to be large. Even a single toonie is enough to buy a petri dish or test tube that could help in the next major research discovery to better detect or treat cancer. Join the fight. Buy a daffodil pin, buy fresh daffodils at retail locations in your community, or make a donation at your door or via [cancer.ca/daffodil]. A toonie in the pin box could make all the difference.
Daffodil pin The daffodil is a symbol of strength and courage in the fight against cancer. Buy a daffodil pin and wear it in April to show your support for Canadians living with cancer now.
