Three Weddings and a baby!

In the VanEgmond family, BINGO is a common theme. Not that the hugely extended family plays a normal version of the game. It just happens. Like when this past Thanksgiving, when Brenda took a break of sorts and flew to Edmonton with her mother to attend a family wedding. On the plane, she heard someone call her name, but figured it couldn’t be for her. Well, turned out it was Mike Vandertoorn, also from Brighton, sitting a row or two behind her, flying out to visit his daughter. As with most people of her joyous heritage, Mike is connected. Sort of. Mike’s mother Elizabeth, 81 and a tireless volunteer in Brighton is the sister of Gerald Draaistra’s late mother, Corrie. Both immigrated from Holland after the Second World War. Brenda and Gerald were friends in high school, and it was through Gerald that Brenda met Maurice, whom she married 30 years ago. One of Gerald’s good friends is Ron Prins, who is the general manager of Gerald’s company Vanderlaan Building Products. 1 0 2016 Wedding Trends

Ron’s brother is married to Brenda’s sister, and building is a family trade. Brenda works at Ducon Contractors, owned by David Wikkerink, a relative. Brenda and her husband own and operate VanEgmond Carpentry, and his lead hand is his son Nathan, a licenced carpenter. The company’s apprentice is Kristian Batchelor. Kristian, until his recent marriage, boarded with Doug and Roxanne Ewing, whose daughter Meagan is married to Kyle Rhebergen, a carpenter’s apprentice with Ducon. Meagan’s brother Gavin was the emcee when Kristian married Emily VanEgmond on September 19, 2015, the sixth anniversary of the day Kristian and Emily started dating, and the third wedding of Maurice and Brenda’s children in 365 days.

from their unshakable faith and genuine goodness – keeping Brenda and Maurice sane through the last year. They are the first to acknowledge their blessings – their charming farm on the eastern reaches of Northumberland County, their three daughters, one son, three sons-inlaw and one daughter-in-law, two grandsons, and the massive – no other word for it – extended family – all of whom share and continue to rejoice in the simplicity of mutual support and fellowship.

Nathan and Nadine, who are expecting their first child, were the first to marry in this chaotically joyous year. That was easy. Relatively speaking. The families, already connected through mutual friends, celebrated the union of their children. “Nadine is meticulous in her organization and Arlene is wonderful. She did so much of the work,” admitted the relieved mother of the groom, whose time was to come. The next tremor occurred when Nathan’s sister Ruth and her boyfriend Aaron announced their engagement, with a wedding date set for early in the new year. Ruth wanted snow, and her prayers were answered, followed by ice, and she loved every moment. Mom was less calm, but accepted what may come. “It was crazy. I don’t remember Christmas; I don’t know what we bought anyone. Whatever we were doing, there was always the undercurrent of the wedding lurking on our consciousness. I just wanted Christmas over, so we could focus on the wedding.” As the day neared, and emotions welled, Brenda found comfort. “Plan all you want, but when you wake up the day of the wedding, it is what it is. Deal with it.” Ruth and Aaron’s winter wedding was gorgeous, and after Nathan and Nadine’s wedding and Aaron and Ruth’s wedding, Maurice and Brenda were looking for a welcome break, and longed for a return to normal. Until Kristian proposed to Emily in May. It’s not like the usual suspects weren’t all involved again. Emily’s sister Ruth married Aaron, whose sister Shaloma married Kristian’s brother Jesse. Gavin, Emily and Kristian’s emcee brought down the house with a perfect delivery of his line, “We’re pretty sure it’s all legal.”

Okay, five months to plan. By now, planning a wedding was second nature. Brenda could do this in her sleep. Get a venue, get a photographer, get a dress, get a pastor. Check, check, check, full stop. A family of deep faith, the VanEgmond’s congregation was between pastors, so that was a bit of a hiccup, but successfully handled. Check, check, check. Everything was done. The planets were aligned. Why not get a closer look? After two weddings complete, another in the works, why not jump out of that perfectly good airplane? “I’d always wanted to skydive,” Brenda laughed, with a twinkle of adventure in her eyes. “Rick Jones called Maurice and said he was getting a group together. I signed on.” Off they went in early June. Maurice and Brenda were strapped to their tandem partners, and after climbing in what Brenda calls a, “Very small plane,” to higher than 11,500 feet, out they went. “It was one of the biggest thrills of my life. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.” Everyone needs to relieve the pressure once in a while. Some people take a walk. The VanEgmonds skydive. All was good. The household was relaxed. They simply had the wedding to celebrate, and then prepare for their second grandchild – their daughter Rachel and her husband Joel had one son, Colton, and were expecting October 11. Young Ezekiel had other ideas, and on the eve of Maurice and Brenda departing for a long anticipated and much deserved cruise in midAugust, Rachel called, letting them know she was in labour, two months early. Thankfully, a very robust and health baby boy arrived. After a quick trip to Strathroy to snuggle him, the perennial parents of the brides and groom were off to relax and celebrate their 30th anniversary.

Nadine & Nathan VanEgmond September 20, 2014

Despite the wedding density, each was unique in style, and memorable. “Nathan and Nadine’s wedding had beautiful weather, and they celebrated their togetherness with a unity candle ceremony,” remembered Brenda. Aaron and Ruth wanted a winter wedding with snow, and they marked their union with a sand ceremony, and Emily is an artist, so she and Kristian created a unity canvas with paint. Brenda admitted she was concentrating more on technique than meaning. “I just didn’t want to see blue paint on Emily’s gown and Kristian’s suit.” Looking back, the VanEgmonds wouldn’t change a thing. “We couldn’t have handpicked

better life partners for our children. We all get along wonderfully, each set of parents get along, and we’re excited for the future. Our children are happy.” Brenda has two thoughts after the last year. “Enjoy the day. It goes so fast. You spend months and months planning, it’s stressful and you’re always thinking about it on some level, and then it’s over in a heartbeat.” Her second realization? “We’re so ready for Christmas this year,” she sighed. “We’re so over weddings. We’re on to grandchildren.” And they’re off to Mexico in January. There’s a family wedding…

Reflowering Romance Lorne & Mary Buck’s 60 years of lasting love By Kelly S. Thompson It all started with an orchid. Lorne Buck, determined to take his new sweetheart to a formal dance, borrowed his brother’s coat and shoes, and asked Mary Riddell on a date. Eager to impress her, he spent his meagre salary on an orchid corsage, an expense he claims nearly “broke the bank.” Whether or not the financial sacrifice was evident, Mary still treasures that romantic floral gesture,

having dried it and stored it safely, 60 years later. The couple met while Lorne, an Ottawa Valley native, was pursuing a degree in physical education from Western University. Mary, originally from Toronto, was “toiling over a typewriter,” as Lorne puts it, and they serendipitously met at a church singles event, which Lorne’s brother convinced

him to attend by encouraging him to drag along his guitar. That’s how it came to evolve, eventually, down the road a little bit, into a romance,” said Lorne. Mary claims it wasn’t long before she knew they were meant for one another. The rest is history and the Lorne and Mary married on August 20, 1955. Lorne worked hard during the summers to pay for his degree, and yet, upon returning


to school was told all of his work cheques bounced and he had to devise a method for paying tuition. One thing remained certain Lorne’s physical prowess and desire to teach made his degree a must. With a passion for sports and as a member of the prestigious Western track team, he was determined to complete his bachelor’s degree. His financial solution was to join the Canadian Armed Forces as an Infantry Officer so he could receive a salary to support his schooling and new family. Between school, work, and running on the track team, Lorne admits his marriage was a temporarily lower priority. “I didn’t have much time for anything except studying,” said Lorne. “I had a part time job, I had the track team. I didn’t see Mary much that year.” Persistence paid off. Lorne managed to graduate and after leaving the military, acquired a job as a physical education teacher and coach at a school in Toronto. Quickly, Mary and Lorne’s marriage produced five children, three of them born in just the first three years of marriage, undoubtedly running Mary off her feet. “Back then there was no pill,” joked Mary. “I was a

stay at home mom, which I wanted to be.” Eventually, after four daughters in succession, a son was finally born to the Buck family. Lorne and Mary, being avid adventurers, thrived on creating a family centred on cherished values and shared passions. Together and with their children, they travelled to various corners of North America, seeking out the best skiing, puttering around countless golf courses, and enjoying several cruises once their children were old enough to care for themselves. “We filled our lives pretty well,” said Lorne.

exactly what he wanted, claiming he couldn’t stand to be “fenced in.” The land Mary and Lorne purchased, near the little village of Codrington, is a tranquil oasis from city life, with a laneway winding through mature maples and a sprawling landscape to carve out their ideal life. Over the last 30 years, Lorne and Mary created their dream home, complete with 145 acres of land, several kilometres of groomed trails, and a woodlot 82-year-old Lorne still maintains. His work pants are still dusty from his morning wood delivery to one of his clients, and he notes his woodlot is his gymnasium. Lorne is cognizant of the fact that without Mary, none of the land, experiences, or vacations would have any meaning. “We had many monumental memories,” he said, regarding the pond that extends to the back of the house. The pond itself is home to memories of its own, as Lorne remembers many years spent swimming and skating as a family.

After 30 years as a physical education teacher, coach, and mentor for various sports, Lorne was ready to end his career and instead take time to focus on family. The couple decided it was time to leave Toronto and retire to a quieter community to be their forever home, a property with space to accommodate a growing crew of grandchildren. “I was a country bumpkin It’s clear the secret to Lorne and Mary’s myself. I was looking for a place with property,” said Lorne. competing with the national team, not only in his own career but also later as a mentor and coach. “A lot of my time, unfortunately for Mary, was being away from her,” said Lorne. He is also an accomplished bluegrass musician, still attending open mic nights to strum his own composed songs with a crew of friends. In all of this, his wife stood by and supported him, encouraging his dedication to sport and art. For Mary, her joy was found in home decorating and horticulture and in their home in Codrington, she cultivated countless flowerbeds Lorne remains proud of today. He is eager to take visitors through the house to showcase Mary’s stamp of love on their home, including framed cross-stitch, stained glass, and a host of family photos she meticulously maintains. Although their interests may be separate, Lorne and Mary seem to find a way to return to one another and offer support to each other’s causes. Ultimately, Mary credits togetherness as the element that has allowed their marriage to flourish, while Lorne gives nod to persistence, even in the face of tough times. “There will be disagreements,

but you’ll work them out at the end of the day,” said Lorne. “That’s what you have to do, otherwise, it doesn’t last. We’re still here, looking after one another.” With this, he looks over to Mary and she gives him a smile. Their love is something palpable that seems to swallow the room whole. Like any family, Lorne and Mary have not made it through life and marriage unscathed. They have endured separation from one another during Lorne’s extensive travels, and today, both in their 80s, they seem all too aware of age creeping up, infiltrating their everyday activities. Several years ago, their beloved daughter lost a long battle to lung cancer, leaving behind two daughters to carry on her legacy, and the tragedy is obviously raw for the entire Buck family. In the face of adversity, Lorne and Mary have cultivated a relationship that stands out not only in duration but also in connection, with an uncanny ability to fill in each other’s memories and sentences, a feat only accomplished by those with a firm understanding and appreciation for one another. These days, they welcome visits from their kids as well as 10 grandchildren

and five great-grandchildren, but they are now content to pass the holiday tradition torch to allow the grandkids to host big family dinners. “It’s their turn now. They’ve got to take over,” said Lorne, who is keen to show his family how far he has come, having recently completed his memoirs he then had printed and bound, sharing his story with those he loves. His memories and accomplishments are the stuff of inspiration. Indeed, the Buck family home is a tribute to a treasured family, past and present. Their walls are adorned with countless family photos, some dog-eared and fading, and others vibrant, taken at their recent 60th anniversary celebration. Brightest of all is the blooming magenta orchid sitting in the corner of the living room - fragile, alive, and a symbol of new beginnings.

There’s a rumble in the local catering scene stealing hearts before anyone takes a single bite. Impressive, charming, and gleaming, the 1938 Chevrolet Maple Leaf truck turns heads wherever it goes. Mounted on a 1977 Suburban 4 x 4 chassis, it can go a lot of places. It’s not the powerful V8 engine fed with a four-barrel carburetor or the throaty duel exhausts getting all of the glory, though. It’s the wood-fired pizza oven mounted on the flatbed that activates the saliva glands. Richard and Isabelle of Vintage Pizza Pie Company (www. vintagepizzapie.com) clearly wanted to make a statement, while making exceptional food for their clients. “It’s casual, yet chic,” noted Isabelle. “It’s elegant and fun at the same time, and it’s unique yet comforting.”

Finding themselves downsized from the auto industry, the couple was seeking new horizons. They volunteered at Norman Hardie’s winery in Hillier, helping with his wood-fired pizza oven. Through this experience, they learned traditional pizza making from top-end professionals. “Norm has amazing connections within the restaurant worlds in Toronto and Montreal,” explained Richard. They were fortunate to learn from three of the best pizza chefs, all with their own popular restaurants, including Rocco Agostino of Pizzeria Libretto, Daniel Usher of Ortolan Toronto, and David Mattachioni of Mattachioni Restaurant. “It was high-end training, for sure,” they laughed, acknowledging there are many intimidating moments. “Three weeks after we started, Norm invited professional chefs to dine. We made pizza for Anna and Michael Olson and Jamie Kennedy. The feedback was great. People told us it was the best pizza they’d ever tasted.” Wanting to use that knowledge, but definitely not wanting a restaurant, Richard and Isabelle started looking for ways to share 2016 Wedding Trends 3 3


their craft. They looked at trailers, but they were expensive and lacked personality. “We wanted eye candy, and we wanted vintage. We learned by putting a vintage body on a modern drive train, parts were more accessible and we could maintain highway speeds.” The first road trip for the Maple Leaf was to Maine Wood Heat in Skowhegan, Maine to get the perfect pizza oven. It was engineered to fit the flatbed of the truck, and each component was carefully considered, sourced, and installed. The copper is from Maine; the interior is organic stone from France. “It doesn’t off-gas, there is no mortar,” noted Isabelle.

a luxurious resort Experience experience only minutes from home… “It’s all chiselled and custom fit.” Impressive though the truck and oven are, the fare is equally extraordinary. The process starts with starting a small fire in the throat to warm the chimney, and then gradually builds until about an hour later the temperature is 800 degrees, monitored with a laser thermometer. “We keep pushing the fire back, and when we’re at temperature, we move the fire to the side and clean the floor,” explained Richard. Vintage Pizza’s chefs use select species of hardwood – maple, oak, lilac, and applewood – chosen so they don’t pop and spray ash over the food. The result is a sensual overload – bubbling cheese, a crisp thin crust, with a hint of sweet smoke infused into artisanal toppings. Every pizza crust starts with a two to four-day cold fermentation, with double


zero flour, little yeast and lots of humidity. Richard and Isabelle shuddered at the thought of rolling the dough. “We open it, all by hand. It’s very delicate.” Toppings are as individual as the clients. There are breakfast selections, steak, vegetarian of course, and dessert pizzas. There are smoked peaches with blue cheese, English vanilla cream, and maple couli. Of course, there is the traditional Neopolitan and Margherita, cooked in fewer than 90 seconds, but all of the pizzas are in and out quickly. The oven can cook three at a time, and with nine employees and endless variations, the team can satiate a crowd with ease, using nothing

To Richard and Isabelle, it’s a new venture, an extension of their artistic and technical talents. Whether it’s a wedding or family celebration or a corporate event, we want it to be seamless and perfect.” This is not just another catering truck. It sounds cheesy but not going to bed angry.

Best advice you’d like to pass on?

Talking about things and being open with each other has made our first year that much smoother. Learn to put your spouse first, and it will quickly become natural.

Any advice on the planning a wedding?

You don’t have to have a huge budget to make it the best day of your life. Keep it true to your personalities, and don’t sweat the small details-you won’t remember them anyway.

Begin working on your guest list so you will know how many wedding invites (and maybe save the dates) to eventually order (one per single adult, couple, or family invited). Start your wedding invitation shopping so you can narrow your choices to only your favorites. Be sure to order samples, which are usually blank, so you can personally see the paper and design. If you are planning to mail save the date cards to guests, begin searching for your preferred design of them as well.

If you will be sending save the dates, place your order based on the number of guests to whom you will be mailing them as they are optional. Review sample wedding invitation verses and give some thought as to how your wording will read. If sending save the dates, prepare and mail them.

Select your wedding invitation design and gather all the details that will be printed on them such as date, times, name, and address of location(s), etc. Determine what invitation enclosures or extras you will also be ordering – reception cards, response cards, pre-printed return address on envelopes, direction/map cards, decorative envelope seals, colored lining for inner envelopes, matching thank you cards or informal notes, etc. Some of these options may not be available depending on your chosen style. You may also be able to order matching menu, table, and place cards for your design. The more items you can order together, the more you will save by avoiding separate shipping costs later.

If you are including response cards, check with your dinner location to see how far in advance they need your final guest count so you can select the RSVP date that will be printed on them (typically 2–3 weeks before wedding). You also need to decide whose address will be printed on the response envelope or postcard (meaning they will receive the replies). If you are doing your own invitations, create and mail one to yourself to see how they hold up through the mail.

Finalize your wording and place your wedding invitation order. Remember to order some extras now so you won’t run out if there are last-minute guests to invite and so you also have a few as keepsakes. If the option is available, order some extra envelopes just to be safe. Review your guest list to make sure you have current addresses for everyone. Consider custom wedding stamps for mailing your wedding invites. Some retailers give you the option of choosing from pre-designed wedding postage or simply uploading a photo to create your own stamp design. NOTE: Be sure to have one of your ready-to-mail invitations weighed at a post office before you purchase any postage stamps to make sure you are using the correct amount for each invitation.

Fold and/or assemble your wedding invitations, if necessary. Hand address mailing envelopes and write guest names on inside envelopes, if they are included. Purchase and apply postage stamps to the response card envelopes or response postcards, if they will be included. Take one fully assembled and sealed invitation to the post office to have it weighed to determine the correct amount of postage needed. Purchase your stamps or order custom wedding stamps with appropriate postage amount required for mailing.
