The cast and support crew for the recent production of Nell Gwynn at The Cut would like to thank everyone who came along to support our performances. We had a lot of fun in putting it together and producing what I thought was a great night's entertainment.

Up next is our traditional summer Shakespeare, happening in a pub garden near you in July. This year is

Twelfth Night. Watch out for the notices and flyers for details of venues.

More to explore in '24 on the Green

Meeting at 4:30am didn't stop 16 valiant people turning up for a terrific cacophony of a Dawn Chorus; 18 species identified, hot drinks and nibbles much enjoyed at the end.

What's next for explore in '24?

At the very end of this month on May 30th, there will be an evening walk 7pm-8:30pm with ecologist and plant enthusiast Dorothy Casey, to look for some of the Green's early summer wildflowers and compare today's list with what we know was here 20 years ago. Find out more about why we manage some areas of the Green so intensively and leave others alone. Meet at the River Lane entrance to the Green, that's near the basketball court . (What3words ///chess.supply.shortage) On June 15th is a real first for the Green, Millennium Green's Bike Day from 10am-4pm. Bike wheel sculpture, bike challenges

and fun, plus, something very special; A demonstration of several bikes adapted for people with disabilities by Bike Active North Suffolk. This group will be starting to offer rides on the Green in 2025. The Bike Day is your chance to meet them and their bikes, see how you might make use of the opportunity to join their rides, or to come and help those who do. This will be a new group working in a very similar way to Bike Active Norfolk, have a look at that website to learn more about Bike Active's terrific work.

All the Explore in '24 events planned so far, and there will be more throughout the year, are on our website under 'Our Activities'/'What's On'.

It's 25 years since the Green was set up in 1999 with the help of money from government, Europe, local businesses, local groups and individuals. Halesworth is so lucky to have this extraordinary,

Halesworth Swifts were grateful to M S Property Services for help installing nest boxes.

On May Day, the Coop team installed their own swift nest boxes; just in time to welcome the swifts back to Halesworth from their winter holiday in Africa! These boxes will help to expand the network of nesting sites in the town centre.

The Halesworth Coop team are ready to welcome the swifts to their new homes.

The Burrows

Wenhaston Flower Club

We were delighted to welcome back Moira at our May meeting for a very interesting workshop. Moira showed everyone how to make a bear grass spiral framework which she then used in two very different flower arrangements. The members had a great time coping the spiral framework and producing their own arrangements. Our next meeting is our summer outing which will be on June 4th to The Southwold Flower Company, Wangford Road, Reydon, IP18 6SJ.

Please meet there at 6:30pm. £5 payable on the night. We will go whatever the weather, just bring wet weather gear. Walking boots, wellies or sensible footwear are recommended as we will be going to the field. If you would like to go, please let either Jackie or Jane know by May 27th.

Jane: 01986 874248 07884 030509 jfw6001@gmail.com.

Jackie: 01502 478401 07980 397480 jackiechenery@hotmail.co.uk

• Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.

• Prune spring-flowering shrubs once they've finished blooming.

Support & Staking:

• Stake tall/floppy plants like tomatoes, peppers & dahlias to

• Monitor soil moisture levels regularly & adjust watering accordingly.

As June concludes, the garden thrives as a testament to our care. Each task contributes to its flourishing ecosystem. We eagerly anticipate the journey ahead in tending to nature's wonders.

Peter Beales Roses coming to Halesworth Gardening Club!

'The A-Z of Roses & Rose Growing' is the title of our next talk at the Halesworth & District Gardeners Society. The meeting will be at the Rifle Hall, London Road, Halesworth, IP19 8LR on June 13th. Doors open at 7:15pm for a 7:30pm start. All welcome, just £2 entrance fee for non-members. This will be a talk by Simon

White from Peter Beales Roses, that covers all aspects of rose growing. For every letter of the alphabet, there's something to do with roses, even X, Y and Z. We also anticipate a lively question and answer session from the audience given we have such a rose expert joining us.

Simon is the Garden Centre Rose Sales Manager at Peter

Beales Roses, with over 40 years' experience in growing the nations favourite flower. He loves nothing more than sharing his passion for the rose with others. If you have ever attended one of his talks then you will know we are in for a super evening. We'd also like to inform readers that our annual show this year will take place on August 3rd at the Rifle Hall. All members of the club are invited to take part and can call our Show Secretary Yvonne Eady on 07986 885405 for further information. Doors will open to the public at 2:30pm after judging. There will be a raffle, tea and coffee, and not just any old cake for sale, but maybe prize-winning cake! For further information on all our activities, please see our Facebook page or call our Club Secretary Brian Hammond on 01986 872712. Happy gardening! Adrian

Wenhaston Bowls Club introduces Brian Munro Cancer Trophy

Members of Wenhaston Bowls Club recently had a shock when one of their local members Brian Munro informed them that he had terminal cancer.

The Chairwoman, Vice Chair and Secretary visited him and he surprised them by saying he'd bought a trophy which he'd like Wenhaston Bowlers to play for.

He has called it the Brian Munro Cancer Trophy.

This trophy was played for on April 28th. It's a three wood pairs competition and 16 members (eight teams) took part. It was a most enjoyable day, played in good spirits and included tea, coffee and a bacon roll which

is exactly how Brian would have enjoyed playing his bowls. He was hoping to attend and present the trophy but unfortunately, he was not well enough that day.

After a round robin of three ends the top, two teams ended up in a final between John Robinson and Jim Boggis against James Cantrell and Ray Heater. It was a very close fought encounter, won by James and Ray (Club President) by six shots to four.

As President Ray was one of the winners, the trophy was presented on behalf of Brian by the Club Chairwoman, Jen Daly. The proceeds from the day will be forwarded to Cancer Research.

The Hoppa: From shuttle to stage, supporting community events and youth sport triumphs!

The Hoppa has been very busy over the past few weeks, not only providing a regular scheduled service around Halesworth and Holton, but also supporting the local community in many ways.

For example, during the recent Ink Festival, the Hoppa performed as both a shuttle service and a theatre. As a shuttle, we carried at least 50 passengers a day. But one of the Hoppa buses also became a theatre for the duration of the festival and hosted a very successful series of plays, which must make it one of the smallest theatres in the country. As a theatre, the Hoppa had regular full-houses and had visits from well-known actors, such as Georgie Glen from Call the Midwife and Suffolk born Mike Maloney who recently

appeared in The Crown.

Another example of our service to the local community comes with our hire for the Bungay Town Black Dogs U10s youth football team. They played for the Norfolk & Suffolk Cup this year and won their cup final to bring home their first ever silverware.

As one of the organising team wrote: "Win or lose, we knew that experiences like this don't come around very often and so when we wanted to hire a bus, we were so grateful to the Halesworth Hoppa team for helping out. Especially when we realised at 8am on Sunday morning that we had the wrong date on the form and they still moved heaven and earth to get a driver out of bed and still get us to Norwich in time! Thank you so much to Julia and drivers Alan

ARE YOU INVOLVED WITH A LOCAL SPORTS CLUB? Please send over any game

and John, who were so incredibly accommodating and helpful. They made the boys day extra special, and they loved bringing the cup back to the clubhouse on the bus, singing "We are the champions" all the way."

May 1st was a beautiful day and 19 teams took to the fairways at Halesworth Golf Club to raise funds for the Halesworth Dementia Carers Fund (HDCF). The event was a great success and we're very grateful to John Giles and Sara Higgins for their wonderful organisation. We're also very grateful to Suffolk Car Centre (the main sponsors) and to the following companies who so generously sponsored us: Pearce & Kemp, Spectra Packaging, SJ Geomatics, Kevin Townsend, Micropress, Norton Peskett, Dynamic Dental, Broadway Colours, Cecil Amey, Wickham Care, Gentlemen's Row, A W & D Hammond, Jordan Fencing, Glam R Beauty Salon, Blakemore Foundation (Spar), MRWCF Electrical, Diesels Direct and Durrants.

On the day, members of the HDCF committee held a raffle. There was a wonderful selection of prizes and we're so grateful to the very many shopkeepers, pubs and people who so kindly donated to the raffle, and all those who bought tickets. Our thanks must also go to Halesworth Golf for letting us have this, our second golf tournament, at the course. At the time of writing, the final figure has yet to be worked out, but it looks as if it'll be well in excess of £5,000. Thank you, one and all, for making this such a great success. We look forward to seeing you all again on May 7th 2025.

THE SUMMER PROJECT

Between the 15th and 24th of July this year, The Cut will be home to a nine-day residency for 40-50 artists taking part in a unique cross-disciplinary learning and development programme. More information about The Summer Project is on the Special Events page of our website.

Look out for the launch of our Crowdfunder in early April which will support The Summer Project and its future development.

The Summer Project needs a number of local hosts in Halesworth or nearby who are able to offer a room during the residency period for participating artists. Could you help and what would it involve?

The main requirements will be a bed in a single or shared room, access to a bathroom and possibly a way of making a cup of tea or coffee. The Cut Café will be catering for the residency, so hosts will not be expected to offer meals or cooking facilities. We are able to offer voluntary reimbursements of up to £20 per day to cover expenses and hosts will be offered free access to the series of evening lectures that will be included in the project.

Sadly we can't accept large items of furniture, electrical goods or clothes. After the huge success of last year's 'Maze by Torchlight' hosted by Reydon's Old Hall Café, they've very generously agreed to do it again this year on August 30th. As soon as the tickets go on sale on their website, please book early to avoid disappointment. We will provide some games and stalls again this year. More details to follow. We can't do all of this without all of you. Thank you for continuing to attend our events and so generously supporting the Halesworth branch of Cancer Research.

Tamsyn Imison Award

In 2018, the Tamsyn Imison Award for Halesworth Community Project of the Year was inaugurated. We are delighted to report that the award was won by Halesworth Dementia Carers Fund (HDCF) for the year 2022. The award was presented to Nikki Sawkins (HDCF Chair) by Rev. Dominic Doble on behalf of Michael Imison at a lovely celebration in St. Mary's Church April 27th. The event

was marked by music, and short talks telling of Tamsyn's work and love of Halesworth. There was also a very moving talk by Pippa Evans, telling of her experiences when her beloved husband Bertie developed dementia.

Working with the Pear Tree Centre and other local organisations and service providers, the HDCF works very hard to provide respite for families where a loved one has

dementia, and we're so grateful to everyone for their support. To find out more about our work, ways to help us, and the various activity groups full information can be found by emailing: info@halesworthdementia.co.uk

Later life can be enjoyed in style at our hotel-style care home, where a happy and homely atmosphere prevails. Our warm and experienced care team always put residents’ wellbeing at the heart of everything they do.

Broadway Mouldings Ltd achieves King's Award for Enterprise

Suffolk-based manufacturing company Broadwater Mouldings Ltd is one of 252 organisations nationally to be recognised with a prestigious King's Award for Enterprise. Announced on May 6th, Broadwater has been recognised for its excellence in international trade.

Founded in 1971 and based just outside Beccles, Broadwater is a design engineering and composites manufacturing company, specialising in supplying high quality moulded Fibre Reinforced Plastics (FRP),

fabricated and finish-assembled FRP and vacuum formed components into the medical, industrial and automotive sectors. Broadwater's diverse 170 strong workforce encompasses skills ranging from hand layup, press and spray laminating to engineering and technical design. Broadwater's main market is Europe, where one of its key customers is based, although its products are in daily use worldwide. Broadwater's market position has changed from purely a parts supplier to a strategic design partner for its main

HIRE TRAVEL

customers and has significantly expanded its manufacturing capabilities and processes in recent years. Overseas sales have grown by 90% over the three year application period and the proportion of sales exported has increased to 66% of total sales.

The company wins the King's Award for International Trade in overseas sales over the last three years.

Managing Director Matt Herbert said: "This award recognises the achievements of the entire Broadwater team, some of whom have worked in and have been dedicated to developing the business over decades. We have worked extremely hard to achieve the growth we've seen and this has inevitably presented challenges: every person working at both our manufacturing sites has risen to those challenges. I'm extremely

grateful to every one of our people and I'm looking forward to continuing with them to build on our success. We are incredibly proud to be honoured with this award."

The King's Awards for Enterprise (previously known as The Queen's Awards for Enterprise) was renamed in 2023 to reflect His Majesty The King's desire to continue the legacy of HM Queen Elizabeth II's by recognising outstanding UK businesses. The award programme, now in its 58th year, is the most prestigious business award in the country, with successful businesses able to display the esteemed King's Awards Emblem for the next five years.

Halesworth Town Council have brought in market specialist Suffolk Market Events to help them give their regular market a real lift for the coming months.

There is already plenty of support for this well-established market but with this new attention, the market is bringing in new traders and plenty more shoppers.

Established stalls such as fruit and vegetables, fresh fish, cheese and pies, fresh pasta, dog treats and eggs are now be joined by fresh pastries and bread from Little Pig Bakery, fudge and cakes from Woodlands Bakeaway plus fresh barista coffees from

Roasters coffee van and candles and wax melts from Rosie Stock as well as new refill van joining soon.

You can't get much fresher! Local produce all made, grown, caught, cooked, baked within miles of Halesworth. A great place to meet up with friends and family, shop, drink fresh coffee and chat!

The Halesworth Market is on every Wednesday, from 9am1:30pm on Market Place.

Reydon Scarecrow Trail returns!

Reydon Scarecrow Trail returns this summer with an Olympic and Paralympic theme.

The trail, which raises much needed funds for Reydon Christmas Lights, encourages local people to get creative and make a scarecrow for outside their home or business.

On the second weekend in September, on September 14th and 15th from 10am-5pm, everyone's encouraged to visit the village, spot all the scarecrows

and pick their favourite.

Programmes can be purchased from Reydon Village Hall, Bridgefoot Stores, Little Jems and Boyden Stores. There will also be homemade refreshments throughout the weekend from Reydon Village Hall. So, get your thinking caps on and sign up to make a scarecrow today! Scarecrows could be inspired by an Olympic or Paralympic sport, the attendees cheering them on, or the theatrics and fun of the occasion- no artistic talents

required! Forms can be collected from Barbrooks, Boyden Stores, Little Jems and Southwold Library or can be emailed to you, Just email: reydonscarecrow trail@gmail.com

June events at Halesworth Library

Our headliner this month is an illustrated talk on poems inspired by art which will be given by Tamar Yoseloff on June 27th at 7:30pm. Ms Yoseloff's debut book won the Aldeburgh Festival Poetry Prize, and she currently lectures at Newcastle University. She will discuss her own work as well as poems influenced by Monet, abstract expressionist painting and Greek sculpture.

This month also sees three sessions of our regular Sociable Sunday events (June 2nd, 16th and 30th). You can drop in any time between 10:30am-12:30pm and enjoy meeting new people, and chat over a cuppa and a slice of cake.

The Board Games Café takes

place on the last Monday of the month (June 24th). It's open to all ages and abilities. There will be a range of games available, so join us and meet new friends, have fun, and enjoy tea and cake in the welcoming space of the library. Feel free to bring your own board game along! No need to book. Drop in any time between 2pm-4pm.

If you're reading this paper hot off the press, don't forget, May 23rd at 7:30pm, Halesworth Library is hosting a talk by Simon K. Jones, a writer based in Norwich, specialising in serial fiction, published weekly. His debut novel A Day of Faces won a Watty Award in 2016 and has over 190,000 reads. and as e-books

of The Friends of Halesworth Library. Come along and learn about what the Friends group does to support the Library's role in the community. To round off May we're holding a plant sale outside the library on the morning of May 25th. All events will take place in Halesworth Library and are organised by the Friends of Halesworth Library. Attendance is free, though donations to cover the cost of refreshments are appreciated. It helps our planning (how many biscuits to buy etc) if you can let us know if you plan to attend the book talks. Holton & Blyford Village Hall

Father's Day Classic Car Day is on Sunday, June 16th.

Held at Holton & Blyford

Village Hall (IP19 8RZ), enthusiasts bring their beloved vehicles and show them at their best. We get to enjoy them, listen to music, eat burgers from the BBQ, have cream teas or (new this year) pizza's, together with a refreshing drink from the bar...

What's not to love?!

Free entry for both cars and people. We just ask a donation towards the upkeep of the hall. Stall holders are bringing

interesting items to tempt us. There will be the usual walking raffles of bottles of spirits, a few reasons to sit in the sun and enjoy a relaxing day full of interest.

The Village Hall continues to offer a tasty cooked breakfast on the 1st Sunday of the month, starting at 9am. It's a way to meet friends old and new.

Every other Thursday, the ever popular bingo kicks off at 7:30pm with great cash prizes and a super big raffle. Any stall bookings for the classic car day, or general queries, call: 01986 874442.

Events at Wrentham Chapel

Classic Cars visit Wrentham Chapel: 13 classic vehicles, spanning 80 years of motoring history, visited Wrentham Chapel for national Drive-it Day on April 21st. The Chapel opened from 10am-4pm, offering a variety of refreshments and other 'pit stop' facilities.

The weather was dry and sunny, giving drivers and passengers time to linger and chat whilst admiring one another's vehicles. The Chapel was also pleased to welcome other visitors who called in to see the display and view the Chapel.

Songs, Sonnets & Suchlike:

Wrentham Chapel's next Caedmon evening will be held on Wednesday June 19th at 7pm. Celebrate a Suffolk summer solstice with this evening of 'bring and share' music, word and song. A light buffet with wine and fruit juice will be served in the interval. There is no charge but donations towards the upkeep of the Chapel will be much appreciated. For further details, contact Sue on: 07771 882738.

Upcoming summer event at Sibton Church

A summer art exhibition is planned for July 13th and 14th at Sibton Church, IP17 2NB, with visiting the Sibton Abbey Ruin also available.

Creative artists and craftspeople known for their work, including Suffolk Craft Society exhibitors, will have work on display and for sale and local artists are being invited to take part as well.

The ambience and space at Sibton Church provides the perfect setting for such an event, giving an unusual opportunity in which to contemplate the art of today in an ancient setting. A walk to the nearby Sibton Abbey Ruin can only add to that sense of the influence of art, and the artistic life, in enriching our experience of heritage.

To add further interest for visitors, demonstrations will show how art works come into being. For example, in stained glass creation as well as in other art forms. The Sibton Abbey Ruin site will be open to visitors, and artists who wish will be able to use

Understanding the VAT threshold and when to register

Becoming VAT registered is often a milestone in the life cycle of a business and with it comes a wide range of compliance requirements and deadlines. It's important to be one step ahead and have a plan in place for when this happens, so that your business can continue with little disruption.

A key part to being prepared is understanding when your business is required to register for VAT and the dates that this is effective from.

Let's dive into the criteria:

Threshold amount:

The current VAT registration threshold for the UK has, from the 1st April 2024, been increased to £90,000 from £85,000 as confirmed by the Chancellor in his 2024 Spring Budget. This comes as a welcome change for small businesses who have a general private customer base and would be negatively affected by becoming VAT registered.

When to register:

If your total VAT taxable turnover for the last 12 months exceeds £90,000 (the VAT threshold), you must register for VAT within 30 days of reaching this level. It's important to note that this is looked at on a rolling basis, meaning that it's crucial to have up-to-date, reliable data making you able at any given point, to assess whether you have exceeded the threshold.

Alternatively, if you expect that your turnover will go over £90,000 in the next 30 days, you should also register promptly.

Even if your turnover is below the threshold, you can register for VAT voluntarily, which can prove advantageous if your taxable

outgoings exceed your taxable incomings.

Effective date of registration:

If you exceeded the threshold in the last 12 months, your effective date of registration is the first day of the second month after you went over the threshold.

For example, if your VAT taxable turnover exceeded £90,000 between 10 July 2023 and 9 July 2024, you must register by 30 August 2024, and your effective date of registration would be 1 September 2024.

If you anticipate exceeding the threshold in the next 30 days, you must register by the end of that 30-day period, and your effective date of registration will be the date you became aware of this, not the date your turnover went over the threshold.

Exemptions:

If everything you sell is exempt from VAT, you do not have to register for VAT. However, if you sell goods or services that are VAT exempt and are based in Northern Ireland, you'll need to register if you buy goods for more than £90,000 from EU VATregistered suppliers to use in your business.

By staying on top of this, you can ensure that your business' transition to becoming VAT registered is without the hiccups that many others experience.

Please note that this summary is for information purposes only, and specialist advice should always be sought prior to taking any action on matters discussed in this article.

the opportunity to draw, paint and photograph at leisure in the iconic surroundings of these remaining ancient walls.

Sibton is famous for its refreshments which will be available all day. The exhibition opens at 10:30am and closes at 4pm, so there's ample opportunity to walk down to the abbey site during your visit. Free car parking is available on the old glebe field next to the churchyard at IP17 2LX.

For visitors to the exhibition, day tickets at £5 will be on sale at Eventbrite from June 15th, and also at Peasenhall General Store and the Weavers Tea Rooms. Tickets will be available on the door when the exhibition is open. For artists who'd like to exhibit, pre-booking for any remaining space is available by contacting 07496 373579, though early booking is advisable.

We look forward to presenting this special exhibition and promise an interesting experience for visitors and artists alike.

Cliff Edge Theatre

Halesworth resident Juliet Corbett has founded a brand new theatre company 'Cliff Edge Theatre'.

Juliet founded Cliff Edge Theatre in 2023, with a vision to promote the work of writers and actors primarily over the age of 50. Cliff Edge has a mission to write and perform new works that have a bold, risky, unsettling edge.

The premiere production, 'Daddy's Girl' was performed at The Cut, Halesworth in 2023.

Her latest venture, 'No Country for Old Women' is partnered with The Field Theatre Company in Littleport, Cambridgeshire. It features "three bad ass old bags and a callow youth". 'No Country for Old Women' mixes music, comedy and drama to overturn preconceptions about later life and bring a fresh perspective on

the serious business of "growing old disgracefully".

Funded by the National Lottery, 'No Country for Old Women' is touring Suffolk theatres from June 26th to 28th. For bookings and enquiries, please contact either Fisher Theatre Bungay on: 01986 897130, The Cut Halesworth by emailing: boxoffice@thecut.org. uk or calling: 0300 3033211 or Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall on: 01728 454022 .

BOOM & BUST in medieval Lavenham

From Summer Solstice to Autumn Equinox Sculpture

at the heart of Suffolk's Sandlings

Waveney and Blyth Arts is building a programme of walks, talks, exhibitions and workshops for the second half of 2024. First out of the stocks is the newly revamped Sandlings Summer Sculpture Show, an extended residency at Potton Hall (IP17 3EF) between Westleton and Dunwich, which will run for three months from June 20th to Sept 22nd. The show is open daily from 10am5pm and entrance is FREE. A wide range of sculptures, assemblages and installations are for sale, including works in stone, steel, glass, clay and galvanised wire. If you'd like to buy one or more of the creations on display then we put you in touch with the artist concerned so that you can buy direct and collect by arrangement within days of purchase, rather than

having to wait until the show ends. Our hope is that this will enable the show to change over time as individual works are sold and are replaced by new ones. Potton Hall itself is undergoing refurbishment to match its visitor-facing development. Car parking is now on hard standing. There's a safe tree house for younger children and the unique 'Africa' themed Yurt Bistro for light lunches, moreish bites and refreshments. Plus (by prior booking) there are a wide range of therapies as well as a spa and outdoor swimming pool. Find out more at www.pottonhall.co.uk, or for this and other events run by Waveney and Blyth Arts, visit: www.waveneyandblytharts.com So this summer, come and enjoy a whole new experience! Your senses will be stimulated and your mind relaxed, all at the same time!

Rumburgh Buck presented with fourth CAMRA award

Stella and Tyrone Cattermole (Managers of The Rumburgh Buck near Halesworth) were presented with a fourth 'outstanding pub' award on Saturday April 20th. The pub, which hit national news following a visit by global superstar Ed Sheeran last November, has been voted 2024 Overall Pub of The Year by members of North East Suffolk CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) having won two CAMRA awards in 2023 and another in 2022.

Mrs. Cattermole took on the pub in 2019, just six months before Covid hit and all pubs were forced to close, while her husband

continued to work as a butcher at Cleveleys, helping in the pub at the weekends. He now works full time as the pub's cook.

The Rumburgh Buck is the first pub that the couple have managed. "It's really exciting to be recognised four times" said Mrs. Cattermole, who had a career in marketing before taking on the pub in 2019, adding "It's a big achievement for us."

A focus on the customer, getting the basics right and "very, very good staff" is behind their success, according to Mr. Cattermole. "We listen to what the customers are asking for and deliver what they want." "We do a lot of gluten-free products now" added Mrs. Cattermole. Chris Luck from North East Suffolk CAMRA said: "It's a very welcoming, well-run pub with a loyal group of customers." www.rumburghbuck.co.uk

Written by Jez Donaldson Freelance Journalist

Local customers Stuart and Joanne Cullen, owners of nearby Oasis Barn Holidays, enjoy meeting friends and neighbours at the pub. "It's so friendly and welcoming" said Mrs. Cullen, "I feel safe going there on my own." "Very good beer" added Mr. Cullen, "I love the live folk bands."

Guildhall of the wealthiest towns in Tudor England. This talk by Jane Gosling (former Manager of the National Trust's Guildhall) explores their rise to fame, the houses they left behind and the inevitable crash that followed. Talks are free to U3A members, for non-members tickets are available online or at the door for £4. All are welcome. Halesworth & District U3A BecBun & Leiston 11 & Hales 19 Community News - June 2024

Hopkins Homes set to unveil 'Chediston Place' in Halesworth

Hopkins Homes is set to introduce its latest development, Chediston Place, with the opening of its exquisite showhomes on Saturday 8th June.

Nestled in the heart of Halesworth, Chediston Place is a superb collection of energyefficient two-to-four-bedroom houses and three-bedroom bungalows, offering a perfect fusion of modern living within a historic market town.

Each home is equipped with the latest energy-efficient features such as air source heat pumps, underfloor heating, and a provision for car-charging where possible. Contemporary kitchens with integrated appliances add to the appeal, while acres of onsite open space, including over 340 new trees, provide a scenic backdrop for the community.

Prospective buyers will have the opportunity to speak to the Hopkins Homes team, explore the new showhomes and discover everything that the new development has to offer.

Monika Hanlon (Group Sales & Marketing Director at Hopkins Homes) expressed her excitement about the unveiling: "These new showhomes are the perfect blend of contemporary and classical styles, complete with integrated appliances and underfloor heating to the ground floor. They are built with the latest energy-efficient features, so new homeowners will see significantly lower bills, often saving over £2,000 a year.

If you are thinking of moving home, but not sure how, reach out to us as we have a variety of schemes available to either help you get onto the property ladder or get you moving. Own New's Rate Reducer, for instance, is available exclusively on new build homes and offers below market interest rates, with lower monthly payments for the initial term."

Located near the Suffolk Heritage Coast, residents at

Chediston Place will have access to breathtaking beaches, scenic walking trails and outdoor recreation. Over four hectares of the nine-hectare site is dedicated to public open space, including a dog walking area, providing lots of room for outdoor activities and community gatherings. Equipped play areas encourage safe exploration for children, while green open spaces and wildflower meadows integrated throughout the development offer natural surroundings for residents to enjoy.

170 new homes will be built at Chediston Place, including nine self-build and 51 affordable properties, further expanding upon the success of Hopkins Homes' established Blyth Vale development in the town. First completions are expected in late summer 2024.

To book a visit, call 01986 801690 or email: chediston. place@hopkinshomes.co.uk

Details of the homes for sale can be viewed at Chediston Place, Halesworth.

A talk given by Mark told us of the history and origin of the Thorington Theatre (based in a former WWII bomb quarry). Constructed in 2020, the 350seat open-air venue has wooden seating surrounded by woodland and birdsong. The theatre has gone from strength-to-strength since its opening. This year has seen two new speakers and an updated sound system as well as refreshments available and parking with disability access. They are about to embark on their fourth season with a wide variety of entertainment. Success

has grown year-on-year with companies now approaching them to put on shows. The theatre has won three awards recognising their contribution to tourism in the East of England.

Lindy then gave us details of the 2024 seasons programme with returning favourites and some new talent to delight, this includes music and opera, Shakespeare and theatre, comedy, poetry and storytelling. Something for all ages .The show must go on and is rarely cancelled only in the most extreme weather.

Members welcomed Anne

Fleming to our next meeting as she told us of her 'Life as a Magistrate'. Anne was a magistrate for 12 years and dealt with a wide variety of cases following intensive training. Now instead of a large training manual to read, this has been modernised and can be accessed via the internet. To qualify, you have to be between 18 and 70 years old. Being a magistrate is a volunteer position with no pay, only expenses and involves sitting on the bench a few days per month with two other magistrates and a court clerk to give advice.

The majority of men brought

before the court for motoring offences invariably protest "No, it wasn't me". Although, it can proved it was them through roadside cameras and modern technology. The decision on one elderly man who was brought before the court was that he should be suspended and re-take his driving licence. This was met with absolute approval from his immediate family at the back of the court, who had probably been trying unsuccessfully to get him to give up driving. It was a very interesting talk and we were amazed to hear that the first female magistrate sat in 1919.
