CARE
Going green and
going from
strength-to-strength at Emmanuel Church, Bungay
We've been leading the green environmental journey in Bungay for the last 18 years, putting many things into practice for others to see and hopefully follow suit.
Our old Sunday School Rooms in Rose Lane was turned into the greenest building in the area and became our new Emmanuel Community Rooms, used by many groups and organisations.
Our little garden at the front of our Church has become a quiet tranquil place for members of the community to sit a while and escape from the pressures of modern day life.
We've now started on our next major project - to transform our Church building and to
make it much more accessible for our community around us.
We want to keep some historical aspects to highlight our journey but the pews will be replaced with comfortable chairs and we will have underfloor heating powered by an air source heat pump. The hall will be transformed into modern toilet facilities, office, meeting room and storage. Our beautiful building needs to be used for more than one day a week!
To help with our fundraising, we are holding our annual Christmas Fayre on Saturday December 6th, 10am to 2pm in the Orange Hall of our Community Rooms, NR35 1DG.
From Christmas cards to Christmas bows, traditional gifts
to the unusual gifts, homemade cakes to second-hand books, competitions, hamper raffles and tombola. Jigsaws galore to second-hand toys, handmade crafts and plenty more.
Our Green Room Café will be open all morning and over the lunch time serving tea & coffee, homemade soup, bacon rolls and mince pies. Whatever the weather is like outside, our Orange Hall and Green Room will be lovely and warm due to the underfloor heating powered by our ground source heat pump, matched of course by the warm friendly greeting that you will receive. Come and take a look and I promise that those bacon rolls will smell and taste amazing!
John Patchett exhibition at The Swan House
'Stolen Moments' is the title of an exhibition of recent paintings by local professional artist John Patchett, which is now on display at The Swan House, on 34 New Market, Beccles.
As the title suggests, John never tires of looking at nature; observing, interpreting, and
distilling a host of images that he encounters daily. These include the iconic Norwich Market as well as East Anglian landscapes with their endless skies and peaceful retreats along the River Waveney.
The paintings all bear the hallmarks of this popular artist whose work has been described
as "paintings to lift the spirits".
Spontaneity, movement, sunlight and (above all) colour are features that have made his work much sought after. He distinguishes himself through an ability to blend traditional techniques with an expressive contemporary sensibility.
Besides holding over 50 successful solo shows in Australia and England, John's distinctive pastel paintings have been exhibited in Japan, New Zealand, with The Institute of East Anglian Artists, the Pastel Society, The Royal Society of Marine

The internal scaffolding should soon be removed and the company responsible for fitting the hearing loop are due at the end of November. In addition, the company installing the noise management system are also expected to commence work this month.
Groundwork for the hall's car park (with a capacity of 40 cars, an EV charging point and space adjacent to the hall for Blue Card holders) is also in progress. Badger have also informed us that house sales are proceeding steadily with those that are accessible being occupied or in the process of being sold. On
The Worlingham Summer Fair in September was successful in attracting a good attendance and Hall Trustees were able to answer questions about the hall's progress as well as request the need for donations of spare crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils and pots. To date, there have been some very generous donations of these items as well as chairs and tables to equip the hall for the various functions which it's hoped to attract. Financial support has also been welcomed and enabled the Trustees to purchase some new items of furniture. It's intended that catered functions will cope with 120 guests and conferencestyle meetings will cope with up to 180 guests.
If anyone has any items to donate or would like to involved in the future running of the hall, then please contact us at: worlinghamcf@hotmail.com or phone: 07763 013754.

Time out for your garden in December
December is the time of year when the outside comes into the home in the form of foliage decoration and when gardeners can put their feet up, just for a few minutes.
Natural living decorations and table centrepieces are easy and eco-friendly to create, and are often something all the family has a hand in putting together. Try this for a naturally stunning centrepiece for the Christmas table. Get a good terracotta container, fill it with compost and plant winter cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum) in the centre (a waxy leaved plant with amazing cherry tomato-like berries) then place a few small poinsettias around it with some ivy.
Ivy is a really useful plant and can look stunning in the garden, even at this time of year. English ivy (Hedera helix) is a native evergreen plant, so is well-adapted to our climate and can grow virtually anywhere, in a variety
of soils or sunlight levels - even in the deepest of shade. Ivy flowers in late summer, producing pollen and nectar late in the season, and its flowering clusters form small black berries, providing food for thrushes, blackbirds and blackcaps in autumn and early winter. Its dense foliage and network of stems also provide shelter for insects and small mammals, with many birds and bats nesting in mature ivy plants.
It's is a fast-growing and vigorous plant but can be kept under control by pruning back the stems with secateurs and digging up sections of ground cover ivy if it strays into areas of the garden it's not wanted. Another plant that can keep growing over the winter months in sage - it will survive outside as long as its roots don't become water logged. Common sage (Salvia officianalis) is the standard culinary sage with aromatic, downy, olive-green leaves but there are numerous varieties
to choose from including the widely grown purple sage with its attractive, dusky purple, yearround foliage. Sage has a robust, peppery flavour and can be used in many dishes as well as a herbal tea. It's said to have many health benefits, and its botanical name Salvia is from the Latin salvare meaning to heal.
December garden jobs:
• Check winter plant protection.
• Insulate outdoor taps.
• Protect ponds from freezing over.
• Prune apple and pear trees.
• Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas.
• Trees and shrubs can still be planted or transplanted.
• Take hardwood cuttings.
• Keep mice away from stored produce.
• Reduce watering of indoor plants.

Blyth Valley Parkinson's Support Group
The recent talk by two gentlemen from Medical Detection Dogs was very interesting.
The speakers had travelled from Newmarket and were both over 80 years of age. They showed us videos and talked about the marvellous work these dogs are able to carry out.
Our Annual Christmas Meal will be on December 11th at Wrentham Five Bells. Do contact us on the numbers below if you'd like to come.
We run a support group for people with Parkinson's and their
partners/carers which is a friendly meeting on the second Thursday of most months, in Holton Village Hall from 10:30am to 12pm. We normally have a speaker on some relevant subject and time to chat and share experiences over a cup of coffee or tea.

• Air frosts: Nil, compared with nil in October 2024.
• Rainfall total: 2.57", compared with 3.23" in October 2024 (1981-2010 average: 2.38"). 2025 total: 108% of the average.
• Most rainfall on one day: 0.85" on the 22nd.
• Wind direction: North-west 8 days, south west 7 days, south 5 days, west 4 days and north 3 days.
October 2025 overall was a month of near average temperatures and eventually, marginally wetter than an average. I no longer take sunshine records but am reliably informed October was dull and was the first duller-than-average month this year.
Following very mild Octobers in 2022 and 2023, 2024 overall was nearer average. This one was distinctly average, the coolest since 2020, mainly thanks to the notable cooling of temperatures after Storm Benjamin departed these shores on the 23rd onwards, except on the 31st (maximum
15.6C, minimum 12.0C). A general shift in wind direction from more southerly types prior to the storm's arrival to a run of north-westerlies thereafter.
From October 1st to the 22nd, the average maximum temperature was 15.8C, the average minimum temperature was 9.8C and we had 1.88" of rainfall. Then from October 23rd to the 31st, the average maximum temperature was 12.4C, the average minimum temperature was 6.6C and we had 0.64" of rainfall.
Perhaps predictably, the first week contained the warmer days with the three highest temperatures of the month 20.3C, 19.1C and 18.3C recorded on the 6th, 2nd and 1st respectively.
Relatively high night time levels were also noted generally. 11 nights throughout had minimum temperature now lower than 10C. The highest 12.5C recorded overnight 12th/13th, second highest was the 31st as previously noted. Chillier nights were confined to the last week. The coolest, overnight 25th/26th narrowly avoided the first ground frost of the autumn recorded an air minimum of +3.0C.
Despite 10 rain days noted during the first three weeks, the month was shaping up to be one of the drier Octobers in recent years. This thanks to a large area of high pressure which had formed from the 6th,
not swept away until the 19th. High pressure is often associated with sunny skies, however for many days cloud with periods of slow moving light rain or drizzle trapped within its circulation, termed "Anticyclonic Gloom". In the wake of the arrival of Storm Benjamin, an inch of rain recorded over the 22nd/23rd and four of the following days transformed the month's total to marginally in excess of longterm average.
In recent years, October has enhanced its reputation as one of the three wetter months on average (November and December being the others). This is the sixth which has been wetter-than-average during the last seven, the other was "average" (2.37" in 2022). During this calendar year so far 17.05" has been recorded, well short of the 25.60" longterm average for the whole year. The last two months, September and October has at least provided 5.56" (nearly a third of the 2025 total so far). The water authorities are hoping for above-average rainfall over these forthcoming winter months to top up depleted reservoirs. A totally different situation to this time last year when the 16-month period from July 2023 to October 2024 had produced a total of 48.8". That being the wettest such period on my entire record (commenced in 1968).
Bramfield, Ringsfield and Brampton Primary Schools activities
At Bramfield, we finished off learning about ourselves and our families by holding a grandparents tea party. The children wrote their invitations, made table decorations, name cards, menus and even baked cakes and cheese straws.
It gave the children the opportunity to show their grandparents their classroom, as well as introduce them to their friends. We all had a wonderful time! The children at Brampton learnt about Remembrance Day and watched a video and discussed why it is so important.
The children then made poppies using their hands and paint to make the petals, and they talked about their understanding of
the day while they created their masterpiece. One of the children said "We put poppies on our shirt and jumpers so they know we are respectful. We remember the people who were fighting".
The children were really proud of their creations and we think they look beautiful!
The police visited the Reception and Nursery children at Ringsfield to tell us all about their special job and why they are important in our community.
PC Cunningham often visits our school, but this time he brought his colleague PCSO HedleyLewis for us to meet. Ready for the visit, the children came up with some great questions to ask, including "Do you have to check your car to make sure everything
is in it that you need?" We got to see his car and find out about what he keeps in it to help people when they call 999. We found out that because he is often first on the scene, he has to do some of things that the firefighters or paramedics do.
The children were very enthusiastic about the visit and were particularly excited to see the lights and hear the siren!

Accounting software made simple
How to choose the right accounting software for your business.
Choosing the right accounting software can seem daunting. With so many options available, it's important to find a solution that fits your size, sector, and needs. Here's how to make a smart, informed choice.
Assess your business needs
Start by identifying what you need from your software.
Are you a sole trader looking for basic invoicing and expense tracking? Or a growing Limited company needing payroll, VAT management, and multi-user access? Make a list of must-have features versus nice-to-haves.
Consider ease of use
Accounting software should simplify your life - not complicate it. Look for intuitive interfaces, clear dashboards, and helpful tutorials. If you or your team are not tech-savvy, prioritise userfriendly platforms.
Check for integration and accessibility
Modern businesses rely on multiple tools, your accounting software should integrate with your banking system.
Opting for a cloud-based solution offers the added benefit of accessing the information from anywhere, perfect for business owners who are frequently on the move, or for remote workers.
Scalability matters
Think ahead. Will the software grow with your business? Some platforms offer tiered pricing and features that expand as your needs evolve. Avoid outgrowing your system too quickly by choosing one that supports future growth.
Security
Your financial data is sensitive.
Ensure the software includes strong encryption and data protection measures. Look for

Free memberships launched to boost local tourism businesses
The Suffolk Coast DMO has launched a brand-new inclusive membership tier (including a free option) designed to support tourism and hospitality businesses across East Suffolk during the current challenging times.
Tourism is one of East Suffolk's most vital sectors, contributing millions to the local economy and sustaining thousands of jobs each year.
Yet rising costs, shifting visitor habits, and growing competition have left many small businesses struggling to keep pace.
To help, The Suffolk Coast has introduced a free membership tier, giving businesses of all sizes the chance to tap into the region's leading destination network. Members gain access to exclusive support, resources, and promotional opportunities through thesuffolkcoast.co.uk, a website attracting nearly onemillion visitors each year seeking inspiration for where to stay, eat, and explore along the Suffolk coast.
"We know how challenging it is for local businesses right
providers with a strong reputation for security and regular updates. Compliance with Making Tax Digital (MTD)
Starting April 2026, selfemployed individuals and landlords with income over £50,000 annually (income is defined as gross self-employment income plus gross rental income before expenses as shown on your tax return for the year ended 5th April 2025) will need to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC. Choosing accounting software that is MTD compliant is important.
Budget wisely Free or low-cost options may be tempting, but they often lack essential features. Compare pricing plans carefully and factor in hidden costs like add-ons or support fees. A slightly higher monthly fee could save you hours of admin and costly errors.

Cyclists brave storms for Suffolk adventure
After a fair old wind and some torrential downpours, the intrepid Sunday cyclists who ventured out for the Bike Active event were rewarded with almost perfect conditions for their energetic efforts through the depths of the Suffolk countryside.
Whilst the Rotary club of Woodbridge organised and marshalled this very popular event, the ladies of Inner Wheel delighted in providing liquid and culinary refreshments for these noble riders who presented themselves with big smiles of eager anticipation before the event and exhilaration and satisfaction at the end, ready for a hot sausage
roll and piece of something chocolatey.
At the November meeting, members were intrigued to learn a brief history of the Citizen's Advice Bureau which started by opening the first 200 bureaux in 1939 just four days after war was declared and was invaluable in advising families about everything from how to trace missing servicemen to how to manage financially. 1974 saw the first office open in Tower Street where it remains to this day. Nicky Willshire, the current CEO for Ipswich Citizens Advice, informed members of how diverse the service is, giving free, impartial, confidential and trustworthy advice on any issue
from help with the filling in of lengthy and confusing forms to how to hire a beach hut. There is a staggeringly huge demand for this help and advice and Nicky is striving to link more services together and forge new partnerships with relevant bodies to ensure that this invaluable service will continue to meet the ever-increasing needs. Members are looking forward to the 'Orange the World' campaign walk from the Longshed to Notcutts for refreshments and fun, wearing as much orange possible! Orange the world is a global initiative aiming to raise awareness and take action against violence towards women and girls.
Many thanks to Sizewell C Community Fund for the grant of £26,768.00. This money will pay for new fencing surrounding the playground and replacing two picnic tables plus safety surface for several items of play equipment. This work will be carried out in the next few months.
In the New Year, we'll be looking for volunteers to help clear growth around the old fencing and cutting back low branches (dates will be confirmed in next month's news).
This is a chance for our Adventure Playground to raise much needed funds for the upkeep of the playground. We will have our popular tombola stall (in the High Street), plus some fantastic craft items for sale. All made locally by Pam McIntyre and Kay Bott (we'll also have a stall in Fishers, Market Place) where Pam and Kay's Craft Items will be on sale. The money raised will go towards maintenance and any new equipment needed on the playground.
Christmas at Darsham
The festive season has officially begun, as 'Christmas at Darsham' opens its gates this Friday, transforming the former Darsham Nurseries site into a charming pop-up Christmas experience for all the family.
Visitors can expect a cosy, traditional celebration filled with festive cheer, from handpicked Christmas trees and a beautiful Christmas shop to hot food including hotdogs, burgers, and fries, along with drinks and sweet treats such as freshly made donuts.
Located on the old Darsham Nurseries site, the event promises festive charm, delicious food, family fun, and a warm Suffolk welcome - the perfect way to start the holiday season.
The event has been created in collaboration with Stocks Funfair, bringing festive sparkle and family fun to Darsham.
Children can meet Father Christmas every Saturday and Sunday, when he'll be welcoming visitors to his grotto. Visits cost £13 per child, which includes a special Christmas gift and a ride on the Christmas train - no booking needed. "We wanted to create something truly special for the local community - a place where families can come together, find their tree, meet Santa, and enjoy some festive fun", said an organiser of Christmas at Darsham. The pop-up attraction will be open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm, with latenight openings on Fridays and Saturdays.
January often feels a bit of a downer after the excitement and brightness of Christmas, so why not lift your spirits and let Suffolk Singers entertain you in a fun, joyful concert on January 17th, 2026 at 7:30pm in Woodbridge Community Hall?
Our programme will include contributions from the West Tones, a delightful ensemble of singers from Woodbridge School.
Since the choir's early beginning in 1991 as a handful of singers assembled by the late Andrew Piersenné, Suffolk Singers has been committed to supporting many causes and has donated many thousands of pounds to charity over the years. Now a well-loved, mixed SATB choir of over 30 singers, directed by the talented Claire Weston, Suffolk Singers truly gets pleasure from singing and making a beautiful sound.
Within our yearly programme of concerts, the choir regularly stages a New Year's concert in aid of charity. Our chosen charity since 2019 has been FIND (Families in Need), a local organisation established in 1990 by Maureen Reynel, MBE.
Remarkably, our choir history shows that the choir donated the proceeds of a concert in 1997 to FIND, at a time when neither
the choir nor Maureen's charity were widely recognised. As both choir and FIND have grown and become well recognised, Suffolk Singers are proud to have forged a strong association with FIND. This charity does amazing work in helping those that are deprived of a minimum standard of living, whether they are single, families, lone parents, children, elderly, sick, disabled or homeless. They offer free of charge food, household items, furniture, nursery equipment and nappies, beds and bedding and, when available, electrical goods. When appropriate, this includes personal support too. Our concert in aid of FIND is always sold out, so we strongly advise purchase or reservation of tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. In supporting this convivial concert, you'll combine a memorable evening of great music delivered by Suffolk Singers, with the satisfaction of knowing that your ticket purchase is supporting a very valuable charity.
Tickets are £20 including supper (but please bring your own drinks), and are available from choir members, by calling 07843 840876 or at: wegottickets.com/event/678145 • suffolksingers.com • findipswich.org.uk

We have been busy this year
East Coast Community Healthcare CIC (ECCH). It was highlighted that Minsmere Ward needed a stimulating and relaxing garden area for patients and staff to sit in. Money was raised from local businesses and staff. The League of Friends made a significant donation and assisted getting the project underway. The garden is behind the hospital but not accessible to the general public.
We felt strongly that those who have lost family and friends at Beccles Hospital should have a peaceful area to come and reflect. So another major project
THE HANDY TEAM
is hopefully starting in spring 2026. This includes landscaping and an improved path from the War Memorial to the car park. It's planned that there will be a quiet seated area with a sculpted metal tree with leaves attached inscribed with the names of loved ones. This project is likely to cost approximately £20,000.
The Friends will be making a significant donation. The Friends are a group of 15 volunteers who look after donations and bequests of money for the benefit of patients and staff. Not all purchases are expensive. Slippers that fit seem to be very successful. Not all patients possess these and they help prevent a significant number of falls on the ward which can lead to falls and increased risk of death. We're a very friendly group. If you can spare two hours every two months, we'd love to meet you! If you're interested in becoming a Friend or would like some more information, please contact: peter.harrison198@gmail.com
