Our farming future is in our hands

F

arming is at a turning point. Not because government ministers say so – and not because the Farming Profitability Review has finally published by Defra – but because the assumptions many of us have relied on for decades no longer hold.

As an industry, we have long been waiting for clarity from government. That instinct is understandable – but it is increasingly misplaced.

Public finances are tight. Support is shrinking, more selective and more conditional.

The era of broad, predictable safety nets has gone – and it isn't coming back. The government hasn't explicitly said so – but its actions speak louder than words. It should be seen for what it is: a shift in responsibility.

The danger lies in mindset. Some farm businesses are stuck in a doomloop, says this year's Oxford Farming Conference report, convinced the odds are stacked against them and nothing can be done. Others have pulled up the drawbridge, focusing solely on self-preservation.

To succeed, we need a positive mindset.

That means being agile and honest about our strengths and weaknesses, using data properly, investing in people and thinking harder about

how we retain more value from the food we produce before it leaves the farm gate.

This isn't about abandoning food production or chasing every new idea. It is about recognising that farming is no longer rewarded simply for continuity. It is rewarded for relevance, efficiency and adaptability.

This year – and indeed the next decade – will not be shaped by a single scheme or strategy. It will be shaped by thousands of individual decisions taken on farms – not by any government policy or diktat.

Some farmers will invest. Some will collaborate. Some will diversify. Some will leave the industry entirely. That is uncomfortable, but it is also how sectors renew themselves. And it creates opportunity.

Waiting for certainty is no longer a viable farm business strategy. The future will not be delivered by ministers or market cycles. It will be shaped by farmers who adjust and move first.

Farming still has a future. But it belongs to those willing to seize it.

rowers and livestock producers are being encouraged to throw off the shackles and forge their own destiny.

“Change is not optional,” says Louise Manning, author of the 2026 Oxford Farming Conference Report. “To thrive, not merely survive, UK agriculture must become agile, robust and opportunity driven.”

The report is called UK Agriculture: Grasping the Opportunities. It argues that volatility – rather than stability – is the new normal. Global trade tensions, geopolitical conflict, public debt and extreme weather all make change inevitable, says Dr Manning.

“Traditional approaches to managing risk no longer work,” she told this month’s Oxford Farming Conference. “What has happened in the past does not necessarily reflect what we will need to adapt to in the future.”

Simple questions Dr Manning canvassed the views of 25 leaders, influencers and disruptors from across the agri-food sector.

Her report asks two simple questions.

What does a good future for UK agriculture look like? And what needs to change to get there?

The future of agriculture is already here, says the report

A central theme is confidence. The report argues that farmers and farm businesses must be clear about their purpose. They must be mission-led, data-driven and able to show that they are investible enterprises.

Robust businesses are those that know their purpose, invest in people and retain economic value pre-farm gate. “The UK needs a clear, long-term strategy for agriculture – not one that merely reacts to the immediate pressures.”

Changing minds The report identifies three prevailing mindsets in farming today: a doomloop; a defensive drawbridge; and a growth-focused, opportunity-driven approach. Only the last mindset, it argues, offers resilience.

“We need to move away from defensiveness and despair,” says Dr Manning.

Technology, smarter data use and knowledge sharing are highlighted as practical enablers. So too is education. “Some of the agri-businesses that will transform UK farming by 2040 or 2050 probably don’t exist yet,” she says.

The report concludes that the future is already taking shape on farms.

“Agriculture’s future depends on its people,” Dr Manning says. “We must create space for the New Generation and Next Genertion to enter and shape the sector.”

‘Think differently’ to secure a better future Cash-strapped public finances mean farmers can no longer rely on the government to support the sector, former NFU president Peter Kendall has warned.

Lack of public money leaves little room for government intervention in agriculture, Sir Peter told delegates at last month’s agri-strategy conference hosted by farm business consultancy Ceres Rural at the BelfryHotel in Cambourne, Cambridgeshire.

Strong performance Cereal margins were tight – but it was important to recognise that many other sectors were doing well. They included potatoes and onions. Pigs were having a good run. So too were eggs and poultry. Beef prices were up 27% year on year.

“There’s a lot of people talking about a catastrophic farm outlook and despondency among farmers,” Sir Peter told conference delegates on Thursday, 4 December. “But the truth is if you do look at the total income, the figures are pretty strong.”

Farmers must take ownership of its future rather than relying on politicians, he added. “Government debt is such that the idea we’re going to solve any problems we have with farming by going to government – I think we’re whistling.”

Instead, Sir Peter urged farmers to embrace innovation, investment and new business models.

Conference examines income opportunities

O

pportunities to generate additional farm income will top the agenda at a key county conference this month.

The biannual Farming Conference will take place on Wednesday 28 January at Trinity Park, Ipswich. The one-day event is being organised by the Suffolk Agricultural Association, Fram Farmers and Scrutton Bland.

Hundreds of delegates are expected to attend the event, which is called Fields of Opportunities in a Climate of Change. It is billed as a day of straight-talking discussion, technical expertise and farmer-led experience.

Building on the momentum of the 2024 conference, which welcomed more than 300 delegates and made headlines, the conference promises to offer more than advice - including BASIS and NRoSO points.

Delegates will be taken on a “virtual farm walk,” with each session designed exploring opportunities, case studies from farmers and practical steps from business experts.

Keynote speaker Professor David Hughes, emeritus professor of food marketing at Imperial College London, will examine how shifting consumer behaviour and global retail trends will affect UK farmers.

From there, sessions will dive into five major themes: climate change, natural capital (BNG), renewables, vertical integration, and machinery and labour sharing.

Speakers include Robert Shepherd, of the Environmental Farmers Group, who will explain biodiversity net gain opportunities; while Pete Thompson of Tendring Farm Cluster will share lessons about natural capital.

Charles Ward, of New Stream Renewables, will talk about market access, legal issues, and taxation, with farmers offering their perspective on making schemes work in practice.

and Josiah Meldrum,of Hodmedods, will share how adding value and vertical integration can transform livestock and arable businesses.

There will also be a practical look at how sharing machinery and labour – including pooling kit and people – can help to reduce costs, with farmer experiences spanning three generations.

The day will be chaired by Suffolk Agricultural Association chairman Bill Baker. Representatives from HSBC, Fram Farmers and Scrutton Bland will all participate in Q&A panels.

Defra secretary to give keynote speech at Norfolk conference

T

he Norfolk Farming Conference returns to the county showground next month with a programme that reflects a sector under pressure but keen to shape its own future.

Taking place on Tuesday 10 February 2026 at the Norfolk Events Centre, the one-day event is expected to attract around 350 delegates. It will bring together farmers, landowners, food producers and rural professionals from across the region.

Organised by the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association (RNAA), the conference has become a fixture in the East of England farming calendar, combining debate with practical case studies and networking.

Keynote speech This year’s programme is notable for its emphasis on value, resilience and communication at a time of policy change – including an opening speech

by Defra secretary Emma Reynolds.

The opening speech will be followed by sessions examining how farmers can extract more value from their land, adapt farming systems and make their voices heard more effectively in public debate.

Other speakers include Jeremy Moody, secretary and adviser to the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers; and Professor Jules Pretty, emeritus professor of environment and society at Essex University.

They will be joined by commercial and on-farm perspectives from businesses such as Raynham Farms and Mondra. Case studies from tenant farmers and environmental farming groups are designed to ground the discussion in lived experience.

Communication The afternoon programme shifts the focus towards communication and influence, with a panel on enabling farmers to use their voice for positive change. It will be chaired by Karen Brosman and feature journalists, podcasters and rural content creators.

Organisers say this reflects growing recognition that farming’s future will be shaped not only by policy and markets, but by how effectively the industry explains itself beyond the farm gate.

‘Serious concern’ over winter drought

M

ore must be done to ensure farmers have availability to adequate water, the NFU has warned.

Much of the country remains in drought following last summer. In fact, some 68% of NFU members say that they’ve seen an increase in drought – and 56% say they’ve seen an increase in flooding in the last 10 years.

An NFU survey also shows that of those farmers whose businesses were impacted by severe weather events, 47% reported financial losses of at least £10,000, with 12% reporting losses of over £100,000.

The union says it shows that there is still more to be done to address significant water challenges that impact farmers’ ability to produce food for the nation, particularly the critical issues of water availability, as well as water quality.

“In all my years farming I can’t remember a time when we’ve been worried about drought in December,” said NFU vice-president Rachel Hallos.

“While farmers and growers are out the fields, sheds and glasshouses to make sure the food and flowers get to supermarket shelves in time for Christmas, it’s a real concern that water availability could be difficult in the year ahead.”

farm businesses, said Ms Hallos “It is essential that farmers and growers have resilience built into their businesses to weather these impacts.”

In the past six months, the NFU had helped establish a Water Abstractor Group in Shropshire, with further interest being expressed by members in Kent, West Suffolk, Cambridge, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Yorkshire.

It had also convened meetings with Water Summit partners on planning systems – a key area identified in supporting necessary infrastructure improvements on farms for reservoirs and slurry storage – and on supply chain collaboration.

“There is still more to be done,” said Ms Hallos. “It is vital that government, local authorities, water companies, environmental NGOs and the supply chain work together collaboratively to ensure farmers and growers have access to a clean supply of water to safeguard UK’s food security.”

Growers praised after eradication of potato pest • UK free from Colorado beetle • No pest sightings for two years • Farmers urged to stay vigilant

A

major potato pest has been eradicated from the UK, says the government, following a two-year investigation and ongoing surveillance work.

It follows the discovery of Colorado beetle on a Kent farm in 2023. The beetle can completely strip the leaves from potato plants – devastating the crop if left uncontrolled.

No further beetles have been found in the space of two years, said a Defra end-fo-year update. This means eradication status has been reached – in a boost for growers, it added.

Distinctive Colorado beetles are orange-yellow in colour with 10 characteristic black stripes on their body. As well as potatoes, they can affect tomatoes, peppers and other salad crops.

The co-operation and vigilance of farmers, agronomists and plant scientists played a key part in the eradication campaign – along with biosecurity measures from the Animal and Plant Health Agency and Defra.

Defra farm minister Angela Eagle said: “This is great news for British farmers. We will continue to work with partners and stakeholders to maintain UK biosecurity and protect British crops from future threats.”

Surveillance activities included regular inspections of original outbreak fields and selected potato fields in Kent to rule out incursions resulting from blow over from mainland Europe.

Significant threat Thanking farmers for helping combat the pest, Defra chief plant health officer Nicola Spence said: “Colorado beetle can pose a significant threat to plants and the wider potato industry.

“This has been a huge team effort and is good news for the potato industry, but to prevent further outbreaks, it is vital the public continue remain vigilant and report suspected sightings to the Animal and Plant Health Agency.

Cold snaps help combat grain store insects

inter weather can help naturally combat insect pressure in grain stores, says pest control expert Ross Goodman.

“Grain insects rely on temperatures above 12C to breed and survive – so when the outside temperature drops, farmers should use it to their advantage to cool the grain as much as possible.”

done before and during harvest, says Mr Goodman, who is technical director for Lodi UK. “While adequate preparation of grain stores ahead of harvest is the foundation for keeping grain insects at bay, good pest management practices once the grain is in is just as important,” he explains.

“Once temperatures fall below 12C, most common species are unable to reproduce, grain weevils may continue to breed but at a significantly reduced

rate, and when this drops to 5C, they can’t survive.”

However, temperature isn’t the only factor at play, and Mr Goodman says humidity is also a key variable in controlling grain pests.

“Temperature and humidity work closely together, and when temperatures drop, the air holds less moisture, which naturally reduces the humidity levels inside the store, creating a less favourable environment for insects to breed,” he explains.

The latest assessment places Nulin50 at the top of the supplier’s 2026 Variety Assessment table for overall performance. It ranks highest when yield, oil content and alpha-linolenic acid content are consideredtogether.

Also released are Premium Crops new spring and winter Grower Contracts, especially negotiated to give farmers the financial confidence to invest in minor crops by ensuring consistent, year-on-year profitability.

UK conditions Farmers can analyse performance data to choose the crop varieties best suited to their own situation. In addition to yield, data is collected on a range of important crop characteristics such as maturity, height, vigour and grain quality.

By testing genetics under real UK growing conditions – including 2025’s dry growing season – and across different regions and soil types, the VATs provide farmers with independent, evidence-based information that supports better decision-making.

With the reductions in subsidies and challenges of climate change, the ability to align crops with environmental, market and end-user specifications (including contracts offered by Premium crops) is becoming invaluable.

The tables also highlight key traits such as disease resistance, maturity, lodging risk and oil or quality characteristics.

This enables growers to reduce agronomic risk and plan crop management more effectively.

Profitability “Our alternative or specialist crops such as spring red wheat, fibre flax, borage, linseed, and naked oats can help farmers seeking to extend rotations, or those needing to replace a single crop in a rotation,” says Premium Crops agronomist James Stroude.

“With different nutrient requirements and impacts on the soil, farmers can benefit from extended rotations, as well as creating a break from the usual pests and diseases without any impact on sustainability credentials.

Introducing alternative crops not only benefits soil health and the environment, but as many have a premium selling price, there’s a benefit to the bottom line too.”

Sunset aims to outshine other maize varieties

M

ore growers are expected to try maize this spring – including new variety Sunset, which is suitable for forage, energy production or crimping.

Bred by Limagrain for the “very early” maturing sector, Sunset, was grown in the UK in limited quantities in 2025. It is now available exclusively via ProCam on a wide-scale commercial basis.

“We earmarked Sunset as a promising very early candidate three years ago,” explains Procam technical seed specialist Hayley Wellings.

“Since then, we’ve put it through a rigorous internal screening process at multiple UK locations to test its yield potential and agronomic capabilities, and to ensure it delivers a level of performance consistency that our customers can rely on.”

Performance With an FAO rating of 160-170, a starch yield of 6.62 t/ha and an energy density of 11.57 MJ/kg DM, Sunset is well suited to livestock farmers who want a crop that

can be harvested early in the season, adds Ms Wellings.

“It was grown in limited quantities in the UK in 2025, with those growers who tested it alongside their current first choice varieties achieving some excellent crop yields despite the year’s tricky growing conditions.”

As well as a good forage and crimped maize option, Sunset is also an ideal choice for energy crop growers who are looking to spread the maturity of the different maize varieties they are growing.

pring barley Belter has received full approval for brewing from the Malting Barley Committee, says breeder Secobra UK. The UK-bred variety also secures a leading position on the 2026 AHDB Spring Barley Recommended List. It marks a significant step for growers across Norfolk, Suffolk and the wider east of England, where spring barley remains a cornerstone crop.

East Anglia is home to some of the country’s most important malting and brewing supply-chain businesses – making locally relevant barley genetics essential for arable farming and the drinks industry.

Breeding pedigree Belter was bred in the UK by Secobra barley breeder Paul Bury, whose programme focuses heavily on performance under eastern counties’ conditions. The company is headquartered at Pentney, between Swaffham and King’s Lynn, The variety combines high treated (104%) and untreated yields across England’s main barley-growing regions; strong grain quality, high extract and good fermentability; and stiff straw and high brackling resistance.

It has excellent consistency in what

has become an increasingly variable climate, matching or exceeding other leading varieties across five seasons, reinforcing its suitability for the region’s large area of spring barley.

Norfolk and Suffolk are home to some of the UK’s leading maltsters.

They include Simpsons Malt, who said Belter had “consistently been a top performer” over several years. Soufflet Bairds Malt said Belter had performed consistently well across the entire UK.

Investment Secobra said Belter’s success reflected the company’s commitment to the UK spring barley market, backed by long-term investment in British and European breeding, trials and supply chain partnerships.

Secobra’s UK programme was focusing on delivering genetics that offered resilience, reliability and commercial relevance across the farming, malting, brewing and distilling sectors, it added.

Seed from many eastern distributors will be available for harvest 2026 planting, offering growers a reliable variety bred and trialled with UK and East Anglian conditions in mind, said Secobra UK commercial manager Tom Barker.

Review could give growers ‘stronger voice’

airer terms for arable growers could result from of a government review of the combinable crops supply chain, say farm leaders.

The NFU has campaigned long and hard for government to review fairness in the crops supply chain – and bring it into line with the dairy and pigs’ sectors. It wants growers to respond to a consultation which runs until early February.

‘Power struggle’ NFU Combinable Crops Board Chair Jamie Burrows said: “For too long, there has been an imbalance of power within the combinable crops supply chain, with growers being treated unfairly and shouldering the largest burden of risk.

“That’s why we have been campaigning hard to persuade government to tackle unfair practices, so growers have a stronger voice, better protection and fairer returns for the food they produce.”

Growers receive a raw deal from the supply chain, says the NFU

which would boost farm business confidence. It says farmers would then be able to make informed decisions to help improve profitability and drive long-term investment and growth.

“We are an important part of a farming industry that delivers for the nation’s largest manufacturing sector, food and drink,” said Mr Burrows.

“I’m confident that, through this consultation, we can make the crops sector stronger and more resilient, where fairness and trust are para-

mount so UK growers can continue producing sustainable food for 70 million consumers.

“We will be consulting widely with our members to get a range of views that will form the basis of our submission to government. Arable farmers should also fill in the survey and ask fellow growers to do the same.

armers will find a leaner but more finely tuned set of combinable crop vareities choices in the newly released recommended list for 2026/27.

Updated AHDB guidance for cereals and oilseeds places emphasis on clearer differentiation, stronger yields and a tightening focus on disease resistance after a turbulent year for winter wheat genetics.

The latest edition contains fewer additions than removals, resulting in shorter lists across several crop groups. AHDB says this has helped sharpen the focus of the recommendations.

Many of the new entrants offer notable yield gains, although not always without trade-offs. Particular attention has already focused on the potential susceptibility of some varieties to disease sush as yellow rust.

Paul Gosling: Rust resistance

Good potential Winter wheat remains the centre of attention. For the third year running, a new provision-

al UKFM Group 1 variety secures a place on the list. DSV Arlington follows KWS Vibe and SY Cheer. Its status will be confirmed this spring.

Soft feed variety Sparkler from Elsoms has distilling potential. It is a cluster of new hard Group 4 wheats.

While several of these options deliver high output, the AHDB acknowledges that some arrive with agronomic compromises.

This year’s wheat ratings have been shaped heavily by the breakdown of a major yellow rust resistance gene during the 2025 harvest trials. Revised disease scores issued earlier in the year lowered ratings for several established varieties.

Even so, AHDB analysts stress that a number of varieties – including some of the new recommendations – still maintain strong disease resistance levels, with ratings between 7 and 9.

‘Quieter year’ Paul Gosling, who manages the RL at AHDB, said the quieter year for new varieties had not diminished the complexity of the recommendations.

“It’s been a relatively quiet year for new varieties and several of the new

lists are shorter. The new release includes some niche varieties. Although these won’t appeal to everyone, they will fit some situations.”

Winter wheat, acknowledged Mr Gosling, posed the greatest challenge.

“Winter wheat recommendations were particularly tricky this year, after the shake-up to yellow rust resistance.

“

“We have recommended some new hard group 4s that are susceptible to yellow rust. Many varieties in this group are now susceptible to the disease. However, the recommendations are justified, due to [their] yield advantage.”

Shifting priorities Winter barley options are pared back to just three new additions, but the list reflects shifting breeder priorities. More than a quarter of all winter barley varieties now carry claims for resistance or tolerance to Barley yellow dwarf virus.

Spring barley producers will find several new dual-use varieties with potential to enter the malting market, though this remains a highly competitive space. In oilseed rape, new varieties show good progress in both yield and disease resistance.

A printed RL booklet will follow in January, with updates to the RL digital tools – including the app – released shortly afterwards. The lists are expected to guide seed choices well into the 2026 drilling season.

Breeders focus on protein

W

inter wheat DSV Arlington is a provisional UKFM Group 1 variety recommended for the UK. It has given high Hagbergs, specific weights and good proteins under a regime to achieve milling specification.

New addition KWS Grebe is a UKFM Group 2 variety recommended for the UK. It is classified as a ukp bread wheat for export. It has given high Hagbergs and good proteins under a regime to achieve milling specification.

Soft Group 4 Sparkler is a soft-milling feed variety recommended for the UK. A cross between Graham and LG Skyscraper, it is classified as a uks soft wheat for export and is rated as ‘high’ for distilling.

KWS Aintree promises high, reliable yields while KWS Fowlmere stands out for its exceptionally early maturity. In addition, KWS Grebe offers the rare benefit of Orange Wheat Blossom Midge (OWBM) resistance within a Group 2 variety.

In conjunction with its existing portfolio, the new additions mean KWS now tops Groups 1, 2, 3 and Hard 4 in terms of UK treated yield on the new Recommended List, says the breeder– delivering a broad spectrum of choice for growers.

Front runner Aintree joins the RL as not only the highest-yielding hard Group 4 but the highest-yielding winter wheat overall.

It has delivered 110-111% of controls across three contrasting trial seasons, says KWS UK agroservice manager Matt Bull.

“KWS Aintree’s yield advantage has been proven across a wide range of seasons and growing conditions. That reliability makes it a strong choice for farmers navigating increasingly variable weather patterns.

“At a time when farm economics are under significant pressure, yield remains king and KWS Aintree delivers, performing excellently across different soil types, drilling windows and whether as a first or second wheat.

“Grain quality is as solid as it's septoria score. Like most Group 4s now, yellow rust will need monitoring, but that yield potential is worth investing in and its high specific weight supports

"Early maturity at -2 is a unique feature, helping growers at harvest time to help spread harvest workload and risk. It's also going to be another option as an alternative pre-crop to oilseed rape which is seeing a resurgence in growing area.

"KWS Fowlmere also brings high grain quality alongside OWBM resistance and looks set to be an excellent addition to the hard Group 4 market.

Untreated yield at 88% of controls is strong for a Group 4 too."

Winter wheat promises yield and quality Performs in field and mill

N

ew provisional Group 1 wheat Arlington has joined the 2026/27 Recommended List – with a promising mix of yield and grain quality.

The variety offers significant potential for growers and millers alike, says DSV UK wheat breeder Matt Kerton. “Arlington is a variety that perfectly balances strong yield, top-tier baking performance and excellent agronomic traits.

"Having it on the list as a provisional UKFM Group 1 showcases the success of our breeding programme – focused on delivering varieties that not only meet the high standards required by millers but also perform well for farmers in the field.”

Characteristics With a UK treated yield of 99% of controls, Arlington is just 1% behind current Group 1 leader KWS Zyatt. It is the highest-yielding Group 1 variety in eastern region and Dr Kerton expects it to be the top performer soon.

At 94% of treated controls, Arlington has the highest untreated yield in Group 1. Equally noticeable are its 12.5% specific protein, Hagberg Falling Number (HFN) of 309 and specific weight of 78.9kg/hl, says Dr Kerton.

"Flour millers have praised its strong gluten quality, high water absorption, and excellent bake performance. It delivers a good loaf volume and is agronomically very similar to Skyfall – which has long been the benchmark for Group 1 wheat.”

“KWS Grebe has good rotational flexibility too, performing well as both a first and second wheat. Overall, it looks like a strong variety and has a unique profile with its OWBM resistance which should generate interest on farms.

In terms of agronomics, Dr Kerton says Arlington’s in-built traits offer key benefits for growers. It isn’t just a new variety, it’s a product of years of research and investment, he adds.

"Its disease resistance package is impressive, particularly when it comes to Septoria and yellow rust.”

Performance "With a 7.0 for both, Arlington outperforms many other Group 1 varieties on the market. It also features resistance to orange wheat blossom midge (OWBM) – only one of two varieties to have this in Group 1 – and carries PCH1 resistance to eyespot.

Straw quality is another area where Arlington stands out, he says. “The straw is short and stiff, which significantly reduces lodging risk, making it a stable option for farmers looking to reduce the risk of yield loss during harvest.”

Adaptability “Arlington has the protein levels millers need, while still offering the quality that farmers demand for a reliable and profitable crop. Another unique benefit of the new variety is its adaptability to different sowing conditions, he points out.

“The low vernalisation requirement means that Arlington can be sown late into the season, providing flexibility for farmers who are unable to sow in the autumn or who need to switch to spring sowing to suit the conditions.

"It’s an exciting development for UK farmers and millers alike, and we are confident it will achieve full Group 1 status in Spring 2026 once commercial assessments are completed."

Varieties improve choice for growers

F

ive newly recommended varieties from plant breeder Senova promise stronger yields, better disease resistance and reliable grain quality.

Covering barley, oats, wheat and triticale, the five varieties aim to expand growers’ choices – offering gains in each of these areas as growers plan arable rotations for 2026 and beyond.

Barley Two-row feed winter barley Darcie has a treated yield of 106 and a specific recommendation for the eastern region.

Senova says it has also performed well in northern trials.

Darcie is resistant to both strains of Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus (BaYMV) – one of only two listed winter barleys offering dual protection. Stiff straw sees it rated 7 for lodging, 7 for rhynchosporium and 6 for net blotch. It has a 70.9kg/hl specific weight.

“The genetic potential is clear when you look at its agronomic merit score,” says Senova managing director George Goodwin. “With its strong disease and virus resistance, stiff straw and lower screenings, it’s a variety that will appeal to growers.”

With no available chemical control, BaYMV Strain 2 is becoming more common. “As Darcie has resistance to both Strain 1 and 2, it avoids the yield and grain quality losses caused by infection,” says Mr Goodwin.

“In contrast, most recommended varieties only have resistance to strain 1, so it’s good to see this dual resist-

ance coming through in high performing varieties.”

Winter oats Rannoch, a new husked winter oat, has also joined the Recommended List. It arrives with a treated yield of 106 and an untreated yield of 92. That gives it a 4% advantage over Cromwell and a 10% advantage over Mascani.

Kernel content sits at 74.5%, with a specific weight of 51.7kg/hl. Screenings are low at 3.3%. Trials indicate that its grain quality is very similar to Mascani, still a benchmark for many millers.

“Rannoch is a big step forward,” says Mr Goodwin.

“When you consider that its untreated yield is virtually on a par with the treated yield of the country’s most popular oat variety, it highlights what this introduction represents and the breeding progress that has been made.”

Commercial goals Rannoch has a crown rust score of 8 and mildew at 5. It is slightly taller than other Senova oats but has stiff straw and a lodging score of 7. For Mr Goodwin, its strengths match commercial and environmental goals.

“We’re really excited to see Rannoch added to the latest AHDB Recommended List as it meets both the productivity and sustainability targets that growers are striving to reach,” he says. It also performs well in processing.

Spring varieties The spring cereal line-up includes Merkawa, a new hard Group 4 wheat. It enters the List as the highest-yielding spring feed variety, with a treated yield of 107.

Merkawa is 78cm tall and has early maturity. Its mildew rating is 9, with yellow rust and brown rust both at 7.

Septoria stands at 5.

For spring barley growers, Senova introduces Nolan. It has a treated yield of 103 and untreated yield of 88. Nolan also offers malting potential, with good Hot Water Extract and Predicted Spirit Yield values.

It is suitable for brewing and distilling. The variety has a specific weight of 67.9kg/hl and screenings at 2.8%.

Disease resistance scores include 9 for mildew, 8 for net blotch, 5 for Rhynchosporium and 4 for brown rust.

This places Nolan among the cleanest varieties on the List. As standard, it will now enter MBC testing for malting approval.

Triticale The final addition is Bicross, a new winter triticale. It appears on the Descriptive List with a yield of 99. It has a high specific weight, early ripening qualities and a yellow rust score of 9.

Senova says Bicross also offers flexible drilling dates, making it of interest to growers adjusting to unsettled autumn conditions.

New winter wheat variety closes BYDV resistance yield gap

A

new winter wheat resistant to barley yellow dwarf virus is closing the yield gap with varieties without the trait, says Yielding 102.8% on the new Recommended List, RGT Guardsman is the first BYDV-resistant wheat to yield greater than 100% of the controls – a significant landmark in the development of BYDV resistance.

Step forward “Having a variety that protects against the virus without compromising yield potential is a huge step forward,” says RAGT arable technical manager Andrew Creasy. It effectively closes the yield gap, he adds.

“RGT Guardsman is the culmination of the first generation of varieties with BYDV resistance. Reaching over 100% yield was our main breeding target for this pipeline of material.”

When it comes to foliar disease, RGT Guardsman is rated 7 for yellow rust resistance and 6 for brown rust and septoria. It doesn’t have the YR15 yellow rust resistance gene, so it is unaffected by last year’s population change, says RAGY. Good package Agrii seed technical manager John Miles says RGT Guardsman has a decent all-round agronomic package. But its standing will need to be managed with a good PGR programme, especially in early drilling situations.

“RGT Guardsman is by far the best BYDV-resistant wheat variety that we have seen to date. BYDV resistance remains an important trait,

and it is good to see it combined with a yield most farmers will view as acceptable,” he says.

“There have been a lot of aphids in crops in certain areas this autumn. If farmers notice BYDV in their fields this spring, they should take note. It highlights a background level of infection that becomes visible in a year with earlier drilling and mild conditions.”

New variety RGT Guardsman is a significant landmark, says Andrew Creasy

Clubroot resistance In-built traits are an increasing focus for RAGT. Clubroot-resistant oilseed rape Crios has been listed for the

northern region on the new Recommended List. It yields 97% of controls and a 7 for light leaf spot.

“This is combined with a 5 for maturity, meaning the crop doesn’t finish too quickly, ensuring a decent pod fill,” says Mr Creasy.

It has the growth characteristics to be a big-yielding clubroot variety, yielding well above the average and just behind the market leader Crusoe. Crios is early to flower, providing ample opportunity for the crop to set pods right through the canopy in the spring, pushing yields.

Two-row spring malting barley for brewers and distillers

A

two-row dual-purpose spring malting barley with good malting traits has made its debut on the Recommended List.

Shona promises to be a strong future choice for both maltsters and growers in the east of England, says George Hebdon, barley breeder for Elsoms Ackermann, the company behind the variety.

“Shona is currently under testing for both brewing and distilling. Across three years of trials in the eastern region, it has achieved average treated yields of 106% to controls, underlining its consistency as a high yielding dual-purpose spring malting barley.”

Solid agronomics Although Shona possesses a solid set of disease resistance scores, the variety’s malting characteristics really catches the eye – traits which make it particularly interesting, says Mr Hebdon, “It has one of the highest hot water extracts and predicted spirit yields of any spring malting barley on the Recommended List, enhancing its appeal to maltsters.

“With two years of micro malt testing already under its belt, and a third year of testing due to commence in 2026, the variety looks in a strong position to achieve full Malting Barley Committee approval with no negative reports on its performance so far.”

Aberdeenshire farmer Harry Smith, of Nethermill Farm near Cruden Bay, grew the variety in 2025. Shona has all the right agronomic traits to establish itself as a key choice for growers in the eastern region, he says.

Independence “We annually grow 728ha of spring malting barley, so it’s our most important individual crop and, in 2022, we established our own independent seed production business, trading as Nethermill Seed, so we’re always looking for new high-yielding varieties.”

Mr Smith says he drilled drilled 6ha of Shona into a loamy soil at a seed rate of 190kg/ha on 11 September 2025. The crop established well and raced through its early growth stages, he says.

“Shona progressed well through late spring and summer despite the

very low rainfall and was one of our first spring barleys to come to ear, ripening almost two weeks before our crop of Laureate, despite sharing the same +1 ripening score.”

“A post emergence herbicide of Fluroxypyr was applied on 3 May at 0.5l/ha with 10g/ha of metsulfuron-methyl + tribenuron-methyl alongside a key fungicide spray made up of prothioconazole at 0.4l/ha + Folpet at 1l/ha.

Nutrition “This was swiftly followed by a second split of nitrogen on 13 May, this time applied as liquid nitrogen to combat the drying ground conditions and get some much needed moisture into the crop.”

“All in all, Shona seemed straightforward to manage, coping better with the dry conditions than our other spring barleys and maintaining its green colour into early August,” says Mr Smith.

Harvesting on 25 August, Shona averaged 5.5t/ha, understandably below Mr Smith’s five-year average due to near drought conditions. But it still comfortably outyielding many other varieties onwddqq the farm.

“For harvest 2026, our plan is to increase our area of Shona to 35ha depend-

ing on seed availability. If the variety achieves full malting approval, that area will increase substantially again if the commercial interest in Shona continues to grow.”

‘Step change’ Toby Reich, head of agriculture at Elsoms Seeds, says the addition of Shona to the new Recommended List is timely for growers and maltster It offers an improved agronomic performance – and a step change in quality for brewers and distillers.

“The domestic malting industry annually purchases around 1.9 million tonnes of UK-grown malting barley. Introducing a new, robust variety in the east gives growers and maltsters a fresh option.

“This, in turn, could help the sector remain competitive, maintain domestic supplies of high-quality malting barley, and support long-term sustainability – especially given changing market dynamics, climate challenges, and the need for resilient crops.

“In short, Shona is a timely opportunity for the UK malting barley supply chain, giving growers a forward-looking variety and maltsters a new source of quality grain at a moment when innovation and resilience are increasingly important.

Wide range of rape varieties available

ight oilseed rape varieties from NPZ UK are included in the 2026/7 Recommended List – providing a range of options for growers.

NPZ UK's mainstream varieties are Karat, Maverick, Murray and Vegas. These are complemented by clubroot resistant varieties Crusoe and Crome; and High Erucic Acid Rapeseed (HEAR) varieties Resort and Eriksen.

With exceptional gross output, Karat is new to the list this year. It is the first variety to feature the new Rlm12 resistance to stem canker in combination with RlmS resistance, says NPZ. stantially increased gross output, improved agronomics with exceptional stem canker resistance – it is also Turnip Yellows Virus (TuYV) resistant.

Top-yielding hybrids help to strengthen OSR offer

lant breeder DSV leads the AHDB 2026/27 Recommended List for oilseed rape with its hybrid variety Dompteur.

"The latest Recommended List names Dompteur as the top-performing variety for both yield and gross output, underscoring the strength of its genetics across multiple sites and seasons,” says DSV UK managing director Alex Doering.

"Dompteur delivers exceptional gross output alongside high oil content and a comprehensive agronomic package, including pod shatter resistance, dual phoma resistance and TUYV protection.

The rape variety receives scores of 8 for both light leaf spot and phoma stem canker, with its overall agronomics making it well suited to the demands of modern arable production.

Peas and beans added to 2026 descriptive list

hree new pea and spring bean varieties from NPZ UK have been added to the 2026 PGRO Descriptive List.

The three varieties are Maderas LVC spring bean, Bullet Green pea and Yoshi Marrowfat pea. They are described as delivering high, reliable yields with strong vigour, disease resistance, and agronomic resilience – alongside end-user appeal.

"For spring beans, Lynx has become the well-established variety for both growers and end users as consistently high yielding with high downy mildew resistance and high standing power,” said NPZ managing director Tom Yewbrey.

Agronomics Just next to Lynx in the DL yield table is Genius, with high seed yield and offering growers a large sized bean plus excellent agronomic characteristics.

Loki is the NPZ UK spring bean variety with a good yield and a set of equally good agronomics.

armers are urged to ensure they abide by Farming Rules for Water when it comes to slurry storage this winter.

It follows a clampdown by Environment Agency on inadequate slurry and manure storage, including convictions and fines relating to water pollution and the illegal disposal of organic waste.

Silage, slurry and fuel oil regulations require at least four months storage capacity. This increases to five months for cattle and sheep, and six months for pigs and poultry, for farms in nitrate vulnerable zones (NVZs).

Few exceptions However, the agency strongly recommends that farmers should have at least six months of storage to help comply with the requirements of the Farming Rules for Water – and must spread only according to crop and soil need.

While there are some exceptions, the agency says there is generally no soil or crop need for spreading during autumn and winter. Any slurry or other material spread at this time will not be taken up – and risk running off or leaching into the nearest water course.

“This means that if you are having to spread to land because your slurry storage is full, rather than for any soil or crop requirements, you are breaching these regulations,” says the agency.

Compliance “We routinely check compliance with these regulations, so you can expect us to review them if we carry out a

farm inspection,” the agency adds.

“We also carry out monitoring for spreading during the winter months across the country.”

Recent convictions include Dorchester-based Manor Farm Dairy which was prosecuted for allowing cattle slurry to overflow from a lagoon, polluting a 4km stretch of nearby river in March 2024.

The case was heard last autumn.

Manor Farm Dairy pleaded guilty to an offence of causing a discharge of poisonous, noxious or polluting matter into a local river. It was fined £6,000

and ordered to pay £10,159 costs.

Senior environment officer David Womack said the incident was avoidable. Farmers were advised to regularly inspect their slurry stores, he added, especially during periods of wetter winter weather.

“If they have concerns about not having sufficient capacity, we recommend they contact us. We can give advice on current legislation, help ensure slurry calculations are accurate and reduce the pollution risk by identifying non-compliant structures.

“If an incident does occur, we would urge those responsible to report it as soon as possible to the Environment Agency. This can help reduce any environmental impact. Incidents can be reported 24hrs a day on 0800 80 70 60.”

Farmer fined £40k after slurry incident A Shropshire dairy farmer has been ordered to pay nearly £40,000 for allowing dairy slurry to pollute a quarry lagoon.

Philip McDowell, 38, of Willoughbridge Lodge Farm, Willoughbridge, Market Drayton, admitted allowing a discharge of dairy slurry into Lordsley Wood Quarry in January 2023. His sentencing hearing took place last November.

Victim surcharge Mr McDowell was fined £5,300, ordered to pay compensation of £18,236.40 to the quarry owners and £14,430.34 costs to the Environment Agency. He was also told to pay a victim surcharge of £2,000.

A witness reported to the Environment Agency that he had seen Mr McDowell pumping slurry into

the quarry. Officers went to the site and found that a lagoon contained thick and dirty floating foam which smelled of cattle slurry.

The officers saw that the slurry had spread across a significant area of the lagoon. McDowell attended a voluntary interview under caution. He entered a guilty plea at a hearing in July 2025.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said it took pollution incidents very seriously. “The successful prosecution of this farmer sends a clear message that we will not tolerate practices that harm the environment.

“Slurry pollution can have devastating effects on local ecosystems, and we urge all farmers [and] landowners to comply with environmental regulations.”

Hydraulic suspension among options for slurry tanker range

N

ew options for slurry tankers and trailers will be exhibited by Hi-Spec Engineering at this month’s Lamma event.

They will include the Fad Sidra hydraulic axle system for Hi-Spec’s range of tandem and tridem axle Kompactor trailers and tankers. The company has introduced the option of an electric steering system in place of forced hydraulics.

The Hi-Spec 5000 Tri-SR tanker – on display at Lamma – is among the machines to benefit from this system.

It enables the system to self-stabilise on slopes and provides a far smoother ride over rough ground.

In operation, each wheel acts independently. When crossing rough ground, this has the benefit that the ride of the trailer or tanker is far smoother compared to conventional suspension.

When traversing slopes, the system effectively enables the trailer or tanker body to self-level, so reducing the risk of roll-over. This allows for higher forward speeds and increased productivity.

The operator can also raise and lower the chassis level if necessary. The front axle can be raised to reduce tyre wear when in transport mode.

Overall, the system helps ensure that the trailer or tanker weight is more evenly distributed across all the axles, so helping to minimise soil compaction, but also provide more even braking performance.

Electric steering Available on all machines with tandem or tridem running gear, electric steering offers the same benefits as a forced hydraulic system – but with the added benefit of crab steering. It is neater and simpler than a closed hydraulic system.

The electric steering system works using a system of sensors on the axles for both steering and direction of travel, in addition to a gyroscope to sense any orientation changes.

The system is controlled from the cab using ISOBUS and each axle can be controlled automatically or manually. For safety on the road, the system will also lock out the axles above a certain speed, which can be set by the operator.

also set the axles to crab steer, so reducing compaction.

Hi-Spec tanker The 5000 Tri-SR is one of the largest tankers in the Hi-Spec range and has a capacity of 22,700 litres (5,000 gallons).

A semi-recessed chassis lowers the overall height of the tanker, which runs on tridem commercial multi-leaf axles with forced front and rear steering axles. They are fitted with the standard 710/50 R26.5 BKT tyres and air/hydraulic brakes.

The specification for this tanker includes a high capacity 14,000 litres capacity Jurop pump, with an 8 inch autofill/turbo fill system. The drawbar has hydraulic suspension and is fitted with a spoon hitch to provide a rigid connection to the tractor.

In addition it has a 600mm side access door, internal agitator, work lights and strobe beacons on the rear and four-point linkage brackets.

Spreader and trailer Also on the Hi-Spec stand will be the Hi-Spec XCEL 1250 rear discharge spreader. Unlike other rear discharge spreaders, the XCEL 1250 and larger 2050 use a shredding rotor fitted with 22 heavy duty chains and 12mm Hardox flail heads.

These are mounted under a 4mm Hardox hood that shreds all material to an even consistency. It is then spread by two spreading rotors. An adjustment plate on the shredding rotor hood places the manure onto the spreading discs to ensure an even spread.

Spread pattern The Xcel 1250 and 2050 have the capability to achieve an even spread pattern up to 24 metres and have a capacity of 12 and 20 tonnes respectively.

Typical discharge time is 3-5 minutes. They can spread all types of material such as farmyard manure, sludge cake, muck lime, wood mulch and chicken compost.

New slurry tanker exhibited at Lamma

A

21,000-litre tandem axle unit featuring a new contactless forced steering system for the rear axle will be exhibited by Bauer at Lamma.

The high-specification poly-tanker will be a key attraction at the twoday machinery event, which takes place on 14-15 January at the NEC Birmingham.

Bauer’s tankers are produced in the main for large farms and contractors handling big amounts of slurry from dairy, pig and other livestock units, or digestate from anaerobic digestion biogas plants.

Field mapping The machine will also have new field application control software with field mapping. A Vogelsang 24m Swing Max5 dribble will illustrate the range of application hardware available.

Robust build, considerable varia-

tion in terms of features and layout, and good road manners during highspeed road travel between store and field are key features appreciated by professional users.

Fodder and energy beet varieties on offer

P

lant breeder Strube is offering three varieties for the UK fodder and energy beet markets for 2026: Clemens, Degas and Gahan.

For early planting and on colder soils, Clemens comes with the added benefit of seed priming advancement; although Degas and Gahan have consistently proved themselves over the past four years, delivering exceptional performance.

Bred for all-round performance, all three varieties are ‘low bolting’ and suitable for sowing from mid-March onwards, says Strube. Fodder beet offers a highly valuable constituent in ruminant diets, it adds.

Dietary inclusion from fodder beet when fed to livestock can easily exceed six months annually, ranging from early harvested crops in October to later lifted and well stored crops in March and beyond.

The combination of highly digestible fibre with natural sugars in beet provide a feed that supports stability of rumen pH and in turn encourages dry matter intake for optimised daily

liveweight gain or milk quality, says Strube UK director Rochard Cogman.

All of this can be grown using no more than 120kg of applied nitrogen per hectare, making for a very nitrogen efficient crop. When grown in combination with the use of organic manures, this rate can be reduced accordingly.

A spring sown break crop such as fodder beet may bring additional benefits when planning farm rotation to help with the management of other agronomic challenges, such as pernicious grass weeds.

“Our fodder beet seed is treated with the same fungicide and insecticide treatments as applied to UK sugar beet seed,” says Mr Cogman.

“These in combination with excellence in our seed quality and vigour ensure rapid, uniform emergence, high field establishment and early canopy development to maximise intercepted solar radiation that is essential for root yield optimisation.”

Threat from Spanish African Swine Fever • Concern raised for UK pig industry • Warning follows Catalan outbreak • Border controls must be tightened

P

ig industry leaders called on the UK government to protect the sector after Spain confirmed its first case of African swine fever (ASF) since 1994.

The disease was confirmed in two wild boar – found dead approximately 1km apart – near the Autonomous University of Barcelona in November.

Further suspected cases were then discovered near the Catalan city.

Spain is the world’s second biggest pork exporter – and the UK is a major destination for shipments. The UK imported some 56,000t of Spanish pigmeat products during the first nine months of 2025 – an 11% increase on 202.

The ASF outbreak saw Defra announce that all fresh pork and other affected products from Spain would be held at UK border control posts until further notice as it continued to monitor the situation and keep all measures under review.

Further conditions Trade from outside restricted zones later resumed, with pigmeat products from within restricted areas subjected to further conditions and checks.

Porcine semen was restricted from the entire territory of Spain.

National Pig Association chief executive Lizzie Wilson said it was vital to keep ASF out of the UK. It government must ensure its systems were up

to scratch, so banned pigmeat products from Spain could get past UK borders, she added.

“The news from Spain is of real concern. Obviously, this could have a huge impact on Spanish pig producers, with a knock-on effect on the wider EU and UK pork sectors, if Spain faces significant restrictions on exports over a prolonged period.

Human role “This incident also starkly highlights the huge threat posed by the ASF virus – and its continued ability to pop up anywhere at any time, in this case, as many times before, with humans undoubtedly playing a significant role.”

There was a lot of concern over the government’s handling of the footand-mouth disease outbreak in Germany earlier last year as banned commercial products reportedly continued to enter the UK, said Ms Wilson.

“We also continue to call on the government to provide sufficient funding for port health authorities and Border Force for the vital work they do in intercepting the huge volumes of illegal meat entering the country, particularly at Dover.”

‘Soft borders’ Pork products often originated from ASF-infected parts of Europe, with criminal gangs targeting the UK because of its reputation for soft border

controls. But a UK outbreak of the disease was not inevitable if everybody played their part.

“The government – as various committees of MPs have stressed – must weigh the relatively small resource required against the huge cost of a notifiable disease outbreak like ASF or footand-mouth,” said Ms Wilson.

She added: “We urge all parts of the pig sector – producers, processors, hauliers and the allied industries – to collectively ensure the strictest biosecurity standards are adhered to at all times.”

Premium egg price for independent producers

I

ndependent producers are selling free range eggs for a higher price than premium retailers, according to the latest figures.

An unusually high number of farmers are selling eggs independently rather than selling them to a packer, says to the British Free Range Egg Producers Association. In doing so, some egg producers are achieving more than £3.60 per dozen.

“Higher prices perhaps tell only half the story, neglecting the costs of delivering the product to market,” says BFREPA. 44 ANGLIA FARMER • JANUARY 2026

“Nonetheless, at £3.60 or more, the independent marketeer should be commended for selling at prices above Waitrose and Marks & Spencer.”

Feed prices falling Feed prices continue to fall, says the survey, mirroring independent data collated

by ADAS. Average feed prices were around £295 for November 2025, representing a £4 saving compared to last July survey. The range, though, is considerable.

“Farmers supplying eastern county

packers such as Fridays, Havensfield and Anglia Free Range appear to enjoy feed prices up to £80 per tonne below farms in Scotland, or at least those supplying Scottish packers.”

Egg producers are receiving more from the marketplace generally.

In December 2022, Tesco sold 12 large free range eggs for £2.55, and the producer received on average 91p for their eggs – just over a third of the shelf price. Today, the same pack retails for £3.25 but the farmer keeps nearly half of the value.

Caution urged over lamb shipments

M

eat inspectors are being urged to ensure lamb carcases are clean after French officials rejected £650,000 of exported UK sheepmeat.

The incident last month saw four lorryloads of British lamb returned to the UK from Calais after they were held at a French border control post because wool had been found on individual carcasses.

Defra chief veterinary officer Christine Middlemiss negotiated with the French authorities who agreed to release the consignments of lamb on condition that they were returned to the UK on 10 December.

National Sheep Association chief executive Phil Stocker said: “This release has been made on the agreement that none of the product contained in these affected loads can be consigned to go back to the EU.” Mr Stocker said he wanted to thank Ms Middlemiss personally for resolving the situation as quickly as they could. One processor had tens of thousands of pounds worth of lamb being held and was desperate for help to resolve the problem.

“I would add my plea to processors

and exporters affected that absolutely no attempt is made to re-present any of the product contained in the affected loads for re-export,” said Mr Stocker.

It was important not to do anything to undermine agreements and trust, said Mr Stocker.

He added: “I would also make a plea to the Food Standards Agency that meat inspectors are fully aware of these risks and that they work with due diligence.”

Several refrigerated lorries containing meat from UK processors had been held at the French border, said Mr Stocker. They were stopped after inspectors reported traces of wool being found on individual lamb carcasses.

The carcasses had previously been stamped as fit for human consumption by meat inspectors in the UK, on behalf of the Food Standards Agency.

Export rules This latest rejection of consignments follows reports from other exporters of rejected sheepmeat loads. Issues identified include parasitic damage to lungs and livers, and misalignment between the UK and EU on lead levels in offal.

Mr Stocker said the NSA was questioning whether the situation is politically driven and related to the renegotiation of trade rules. Either way, France was a crucial market for UK produced lamb processors and exporters were bound by the ruling.

“It is important all exporters take note of this incident and be aware that inspections at BCPs over the channel are very thorough and appear to have become even tighter than normal, and we should present no opportunity, or reasons, for rejections.”

“Defra will be discussing these issues with EU border control force with the aim of avoiding future disruption, but whether we like it or not they are the gateway to our marketplace.”

‘Moo loo’ could cut ammonia emissions from cattle

A

£28,000 “moo loo” said to reduce ammonia emissions from cattle is set to make its UK debut at this month’s Lamma event.

Developed by Dutch agri-tech company Hanskamp, the CowToilet is billed as a unique solution to reduce on-farm emissions by separating cow urine and faeces which produce ammonia when mixed together.

Using the simple fact that cows never urinate and defecate at the same time, the CowToilet collects urine directly from under the cow’s tail before it mixes with solid manure.

The system is said to integrate seamlessly into most cattle sheds.

As a cow enters to eat, the CowToilet gently rubs against the suspensory ligament of the udder, triggering a natural nerve reflex 46 ANGLIA FARMER • JANUARY 2026

that encourages urination. Urine is then collected in a sealed receptacle, removed by suction, and stored in an airtight tank.

Research by Wageningen Livestock Research shows that keeping urine and manure separate can reduce ammonia emissions by up to 38%, total nitrogen by 33%, and nitrous oxide by 18% compared with conventional housing systems

“Ammonia is one of the biggest environmental challenges facing the livestock sector,” said Hanskamp founder Henk Hanskamp. “We wanted to create a system that works with nature, not against it – improving animal welfare and helping farmers meet environmental targets without adding to their workload. s 2026 beckons, one thing is clear: the past 12 months was a year of extremes – and we can’t be certain that this season will be any less predictable, writes Nerys Wright.

Last year started with dry, warm conditions that stretched into regions of the UK unaccustomed to drought. Then, just as we adjusted, the rain arrived – and for some, it hasn’t stopped.

Now, many areas remain saturated, and yet it still isn’t cold. These shifts are more than inconvenient; they signal a warming world, with consequences for agriculture, especially one of my favourite topics: sheep parasites.

Changing dynamics Parasite dynamics are changing. Warmer winters mean longer survival for larvae and ticks, while wet spells create ideal conditions for fluke and other pathogens.

We often talk about

testing and treating, and I want to stress this: it’s not because what you’ve always done was wrong. It’s because the playing field has changed. Parasites are adapting, and so must we to stay ahead.

One example is Haemonchus contortus – the barber’s pole worm. It’s not new, but in recent years we’ve seen it causing disease in areas where it hasn’t historically been a problem.

Warmer conditions and shifting weather patterns have allowed it to thrive outside its usual range. That doesn’t mean it will be a major issue everywhere next year, but it’s a reminder that parasite risks are no longer predictable.

Local monitoring and flexible plans are essential. I don’t have a crystal ball, but I can say this: 2026 will be different from 2025. Whether that means another dry spring, a wet summer, or something unexpected, we need to be ready.

That means having a Plan B, C, and even D. Why? Because hope, as a friend wisely says, is not a course of action.

Professional Services Mixed fortunes for farming forecast throughout 2026 Margins to remain tight for producers

F

arm profitability will drop by £1.19bn in 2026, according to business consultants Andersons – but all is not doom and gloom.

Andersons forecasts that Total Income from Farming (TIFF) will fall to £6.48bn next year as weaker global commodity markets, higher labour costs and rising fertiliser prices converge. But the decline would still leave profitability close to the long-term average.

Factors shaping 2026 are plain to see, says Andersons director James Webster-Rusk. Cereal prices are stubbornly low, milk prices are falling and it remains to be seen how long the recent surge in beef values can last.

Spring fertiliser Fertiliser prices look set to rise again, influenced by the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. Its impact is “already being seen in merchants’ spring terms, depending on the origin of the fertiliser”.

Cashflow planning and delayed capital expenditure are also likely themes. Andersons expects another modest contraction in 2027 as reductions in farm support continue and labour and fertiliser costs remain elevated.

Mr Webster-Rusk suggests the shift towards schemes such as the Sustainable Farming Incentive carries hidden pressures. SFI, he noted, “comes with a cost of delivery which will reduce overall returns to farming”.

Recent performance The outlook for 2026 and beyond is sharper when set against recent performance. Andersons estimates farm profits in 2025 were broadly level with 2024 – a finding that “may come as a surprise to many” arable farmers, said Mr Webster-Rusk.

One reason is because a relatively small land base in sectors such as intensive livestock and horticulture generates a disproportionately large share of output, which perhaps distorts the view of how well, or not, the industry is doing”.

Beef has been the standout performer of 2025, with prices up 27% on the previous year generating an extra £1.1bn of revenue despite slightly lower output. Milk prices also remained strong through much of the year.

Turning point Eggs and broilers have also fared well, buoyed by firm egg prices and increased poultry demand as red meat costs rose. But global supply trends suggest a turning point ahead – with dairy prices dropping in the last three months.

As the industry moves into 2026, Andersons stresses that falling profits should not be mistaken for a collapse. Rather, it sees a sector adjusting to tighter margins, elevated costs and shifting support structures.

This represents a recalibration more than a retreat, and one that will shape decisions well into the decade, said Mr Webster-Rusk.

Upheavals at Defra will influence farm policy Tighter budgets and shifting priorities at Defra are set to shape farm policy throughout 2026 and beyond.

The Basic Payment Scheme has all but disappeared, with residual payments falling to just £600 by 2026– 27. The Sustainable Farming Incentive remains closed to new applications – with only a Defra promise it will reopen in the first half of the year.

The expectation that the SFI would provide a broad, accessible replacement for the BPS was undermined by its sudden suspension last March, leaving many farm businesses unable to plan with confidence.

Selective support Although Defra has pledged that a revised SFI scheme from 2026, its likely focus on narrower environmental outcomes and targeted landscapes suggests a more selective approach to future support.

Elsewhere within ELM, Countryside Stewardship is effectively limited to Higher Tier agreements, while Landscape Recovery remains slow to progress and heavily dependent on hard-tosecure private finance.

Capital grants and productivity schemes have proved oversubscribed and unpredictable, reinforcing a sense of competition rather than continuity.

Looking ahead, sustained pressure on Defra’s budget points to a leaner support landscape, suggests the Andersons Outlook 2026 report, which examines prospects for the year ahead in farming.

The Farming Profitability Review written by Baroness Minette Batters signals government recognition that policy must now confront the economic resilience of farming – not just its environmental delivery.

What are the predictions for the East of England farmland market in 2026?

Oliver Carr from Savills says the most desirable farms continue to attract a premium The start of a new year is always a good time to reflect and take stock – and there’s little doubt that challenging economic conditions coupled with alterations to government policy and support have forced many farms and estates into making changes to their business.

But despite the well-reported headwinds – and in line with most of the UK – this did not necessarily translate into more farmland coming onto the market in the East of England in 2025.

Restricted supply - By the end of last year, only 16,326 acres of farmland had been advertised for sale in the region – compared with 16,506 for the same period in 2024. Of that, more than 4,000 acres were offered publicly for sale in both Cambridgeshire and Essex, with only about 2,000 acres and 1,000 acres traded in Suffolk and Norfolk respectively.

Sellers' motivations varied – for some business retirement and restructuring played a role, but there were also institutions disposing of non-core assets and sales triggered by probate. At the same time, both private individuals and corporates were actively buying land.

Strong demand - Values performed largely as expected, dipping slightly from their peak in 2023 by 5.5% and remaining stable but ever more varied. Statistically, the average price paid for prime arable land in the region was £9,370 per acre, but in reality we saw land trading anywhere between about £8,500 and £16,000 per acre.

Where there was competition, the most desirable farms commanded a premium – with location, soil quality and presence of well-maintained infrastructure all influencing price. The right opportunity, to the right buyer, still carried strong appeal – and we expect that to continue for 2026.

armers and rural business owners are being urged to prepare for changes to inheritance tax – due to come into force this spring.

Farm assets worth more than £1m will be subject to 20% inheritance tax from 5 April 2026. It follows the now infamous Budget announcement made

by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in October 2024.

Speaking at last month’s Larkin Gowen conference at Fakenham, Country Land and Business Association president Gavin Lane called on farming families to seek advice in a bid to mitigate the impact of the tax.

Large liability Mr Lane, who farms 200ha at Tittleshall in Norfolk said: “We do need the farming community to be prepared for the changes because, as we stand today, any untimely death after April 2026 could trigger a large tax liability.”

A year-long campaign and scores of protests by farmers have been held in a bid to persuade the government to change its mind on the issue. But so far, said Mr Lane, the Treasury had remained largely unmoved.

tential economic and social impacts of this incredibly counter-productive taxation change.”

Mr Lane said he believed Defra knew inheritance tax would be hugely damaging. “That does, at least, give us some access to ministers where we can try to find some easy policy wins for them to show that they are serious about growing the rural economy."

Planning reform The CLA’s biggest ask is for greater planning reform on farm – an extension of permitted development rights and a relaxation of planning conditions. This would make a huge difference and encourage much needed investment into and onto farms.

“Hopefully, we may gain some ground on this,” Mr Lane told delegates. “My focus has been and will be predominantly on fighting the IHT changes but now pragmatically I am steering my members to take advice in case no change happens.

“Elsewhere, we need to shape the new version of the Sustainable Farming Incentive to make it fit for purpose so those coming out of schemes next December plus those who aren’t currently in a scheme can get in more quickly and easily."

The government was clear that the Defra budget would remain set at £2.7bn annually until April 2029, said Mr Lane. Given that payments under existing schemes already accounted for £1.8bn, there didn’t appear to be much

Other speakers underlined that inheritance tax was a challenge facing the whole industry – not only in terms of structuring farming businesses but also how any IHT liability could be financed and serviced.

The take-home message from Brown & Co was that change would bring opportunity – but businesses needed to produce detailed budgets, including cashflow, to assess the impact of any decisions and plans for different scenarios.

Conference speakers covered the complex issues involved in succession planning and potential ways to minimise any liability.

They also emphasised the need for farming businesses to have a trusted team of advisors.

Red Tractor unveils scheme's priorities for improvement

major review of the Red Tractor assurance scheme aims to make inspections less onerous for farmers.

Priorities for delivering improvements in each farming sector were unveiled by the scheme last month. They aim to streamline the inspection process and eliminate unnecessary assessments.

Clear direction Red Tractor said the move would improve the scheme and mark an important step in the organisation’s commitments to greater transparency and delivering positive, tangible change for UK farmers and growers.

Scheme chairman Alistair Mackintosh said: “By setting out these priorities, we’re giving stakeholders, including farmers and growers, a clear view of the direction of travel in each farming sector and providing an ear-

ly opportunity for feedback.”

The priorities were developed and agreed by representatives sitting on Red Tractor’s Sector Boards. They sit alongside wider improvements already in progress including the Red Tractor portal, communications and assessor training.

Mr Mackintosh said: “The collective focus of the review is to support reduction of unnecessary audit burden, delivering efficiency while maintaining rigour and helping farmers demonstrate due diligence or meet their customers’ expectations.”

Red Tractor’s members include over 40,000 farmers and growers across all areas of livestock and agriculture. Together, they 75% of UK agricultural production. Some 95% of poultry and 90% of pork in the UK are produced to Red Tractor standards.

Recommendations The Red Tractor board sets the organisation’s strategic direction, while each farming sector is represented by its own sector board. This comprises farmers, growers, vets, processors, retailers and supply-chain experts.

The next phase of work will see Red Tractor Technical Advisory Committees (TACs), bring together experts from across each sector to develop detailed recommendations designed to deliver the priorities and objectives.

“Farmers and growers have asked for greater transparency and clearer opportunities to have their say, and this is what we aim to achieve,” said Mr Mackintosh. Feedback at this early stage will help shape the work that follows.

Further opportunities to comment on draft standards will take place during 2026. Final standards will then be devised and independently accredited.

Take time to ‘nip it in the bud’ We need to make sure we look after ourselves – and one another, says Fen Tiger

I

t can be a lonely old life farming.

Like many people, I was always happy to work long hours without the support or the need to see others.

Fortunately, I was usually happy with my own company. But long hours spent working alone and a lack of access to support services can have a huge effect on farmers, farm workers and entire farming communities.

Health checks The hours worked and the commonly held belief that “I'm alright” means many farmers don’t have regular health checks. Sadly, this means that sometimes the early signs of cancer may be difficult to identify or missed entirely.

To make it easier to seek help and stay healthy, Macmillan has formed an important partnership with the Farming Community Network (FCN). Their aim is to make cancer care more accessible.

The project helps to create an important bridge between Macmillan cancer support and farmers encouraging them to reach out for help. According to recent research, living in a rural area makes you 5% less likely to survive a cancer diagnosis.

Farmers are at a higher risk for some cancers – including skin cancer and cancers from exposure to harmful chemicals. Diagnosis is frequently delayed because family farmers

feel they don’t have time to get checked out.

Certain symptoms of early-stage cancer are often viewed as general aches and pains due to the job. Embarrassment can play a part in non-diagnosis too because farmers are often viewed as physically and mentally strong and should simply “man up”.

But sometimes just being able to talk about problems and have someone to listen can make a difference. Doctor surgery hours are often not the best times for farmers – and it can be increasing difficult to actually see your local GP.

Farming comes first I know from personal experience of a close farmer friend who felt he did not want to take up his doctor’s time. Calving was considered more important than a routine blood test and he felt he couldn’t spare the time away from the farm.

It seems traditional methods of cancer awareness has failed to reach the farming community. In the case of my neighbour, the

eventual blood tests were not good news but a diagnosis was achieved and hopefully caught at a early stage.

One way to support farmers has been developed by veterinary professionals in Northern Ireland. As vets have regular contact with the farming community and are often a trusted voice. It has been called the Nip It In The Bud campaign.

Difficult conversations It is hoped that vets can encourage farmers to talk about those difficult conversations about health and early signs of cancer. Sometimes it is easier to talk to a relative stranger than close family.

Northern Ireland vets have decided to update their training and review every year aspects of human health. Hopefully, this will encourage farmers to be more aware and talk more. Farming needs support more than ever.

It is well known that farmers face mental health issues particularly with the solitary nature of their work. This can sometimes lead to anxiety and depression which in turn prevents farmers communicating about their issues.

It is important for farmers to open up and talk more. Traditionally, it isn't an easy task for most of us – but please do remember that it is ok to not be ok.
