Epping is a historic market town nestled in beautiful Epping Forest. Situated close to the M11 and M25 motorways and at the end of London Underground’s central line, it is easily accessible by car or tube train and served by a local bus network.

At its heart is a town green, which leads onto a vibrant High Street lined with coffee shops, independent retailers, charity outlets and several famous chain stores. There’s a wide selection of excellent restaurants to suit all tastes, including Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai and Turkish.

Epping is famous for its Royal Charter Market held every Monday in the High Street, which attracts many visitors. The traditional market offers everything you would expect and the town is very proud of this. With a population of approximately 12,500, it’s large enough to offer a variety of facilities, but small enough to enjoy a close community feel.

Whether you’re looking for a day out or a longer stay, you will receive a warm welcome in Epping. There are a number of country style pubs, plenty of green spaces and walks into the forest. Epping sits on a ridge and if you delve a little deeper into its fields, meadows and woods, you’ll stumble across wonderfully hidden countryside views!

Stonards Hill Recreation Ground is one of the town’s favourite outdoor spaces and it’s only a short walk from the High Street.

Here, you’ll find something to entertain all the family, as it plays host to a café, tennis courts, children’s playground, skate park and outdoor activity equipment.

History of Epping...

Over the next couple of pages, we’ll journey through the fascinating history of Epping - A market town perched on an ancient ridge, where stories of prehistoric settlers, royal charters, and Victorian railways have shaped the vibrant community we know today.

The Domesday Book of 1086 mentions “Epinga,” a small community of farms and a chapel on the edge of the forest, now known as Epping Upland. But the Epping we know today began to take shape in the mid-12th century, when forest clearance for farming led to the development of a new settlement called Epping Heath, later renamed Epping Street.

A Stroll Through the History of Epping: Nestled on a ridge between the River Roding and River Lea valleys, Epping is a charming market town in Essex with a rich and layered history that stretches back thousands of years. Though today it’s known for its bustling Monday market and as the eastern terminus of the Central Line, Epping’s story begins long before the arrival of trains and commuters.

Market Town Magic: In 1253, King Henry III granted the right to hold a weekly market in Epping Street, and that tradition continues to this day. The market quickly became a hub for trade, especially in cattle, with pens lining the High Street until as late as 1961. It’s even said that, in the more colourful corners of history, wives were occasionally bought and sold at the market!

Ancient Roots & Forest Beginnings: Evidence of human activity in the Epping area dates as far back as 7500BC, thanks to archaeological finds in the surrounding forest. The name “Epping” has its origins from the Old English word yppeingas, meaning “the people of the raised place” - a nod to its elevated position and early settlers.

Today, the Monday market is a lively affair, drawing in stallholders and shoppers from across the region. It’s a lovely way to experience the town’s community spirit and long-standing tradition of trade...

Epping’s Role in the Wider World: Epping’s location made it a key stop along the old trade route running southeast to northwest. This helped it grow into a linear town, with buildings springing up along what is now Lindsey Street. Some of the oldest buildings in town, like Beulah Lodge from the 17th century, can still be seen here.

The town also played its part in national history. In 1882, Queen Victoria officially opened Epping Forest to the public, preserving it for generations to enjoy.

Another layer in the towns historical tapestry is a strong connection to Britain’s wartime Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, who represented the Epping constituency as MP for 21 years between 1924-1945.

From Workhouses to the Underground: Epping wasn’t just a place of trade and travel - it also had its share of social history.

A workhouse once stood on Lindsey Street, offering shelter to the town’s less fortunate until a new Union Workhouse was built in 1838. Meanwhile, the arrival of the railway in the 19th century helped connect Epping to London. Today, it’s part of the London Underground network, making it a popular spot for commuters who want the countryside with city access.

If you and your pup are exploring Epping, you’re spoilt for choice! Here are three friendly walking routes with approximate distances, plus quick notes on parking and lead guidance. Distances are estimates to help with planning - feel free to extend or shorten on the day.

1. Epping Forest - Ambresbury Banks Loop (2.5-3km / 40-60mins): A gentle circular walk through ancient oak and beech trees around the Iron Age Hill Fort. Paths are well-defined with some undulations and occasional mud after rain. Dogs can roam under close control away from roads; keep dogs on a lead near horse riders and busy crossings.

3. Roding Valley Nature Reserve (3-4km / 45-70mins): A flat riverside amble alongside the River Roding, ideal for older dogs or an easy-paced stroll. It’s rich in birdlife, so keep dogs under control and use a lead in sensitive areas.

Paths can be narrow in places.

Parking: Small lay-bys on the B1393 and forest car parks nearby.

Parking: Signed bays near the reserve (e.g., close to Loughton).

2. Theydon Bois to Bell Common (4-5km / 60-90mins): A varied out-and-back or short loop walk across open fields and hedgerows linking Theydon Bois to Bell Common, with views towards Epping.

Expect stiles and livestock at times - use a lead around stock. Finish with a dogfriendly pub stop in the village if you wish.

Top Tips: Ensure to pack water, towel, and poo bags; check seasonal lead guidance and any notices from the City of London Epping Forest team and local councils.

What Can You See?

A Little Bit of History

One of the best things about Epping Forest is its incredible variety of landscapes.

You’ll find ancient oak and beech trees, open heathland, and tranquil ponds. It’s a photographer’s dream, especially in autumn when the leaves turn golden and the forest floor is carpeted with colour.

Epping Forest has been around for centuries... literally! It was once a royal hunting ground, and its ancient trees still whisper stories from the past. The forest became a protected space in 1878, thanks to the Epping Forest Act, which ensured it would remain open for everyone to enjoy. Today, it’s managed by the City of London Corporation, and it’s one of the most important green spaces near the capital.

Wildlife is everywhere. In spring, look out for bluebells and listen for the song of warblers and nightingales. Summer brings butterflies and dragonflies around the ponds, while autumn is prime time for spotting fungi (over 1,000 species grow here)! Deer roam the forest all-yearround, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a fox or badger at dusk. Birdwatchers will love the variety: woodpeckers, nuthatches, and even the occasional hobby (a small falcon) in summer.

Things to Do Epping Forest isn’t just for strolling, though the walking trails are fantastic.

There are over 50 miles of paths, from gentle family-friendly routes to more challenging hikes. The Oak Trail near Theydon Bois is a favourite, offering a mix of woodland and open views.

Cyclists can enjoy dedicated routes, and horse riding is popular too (there are bridle paths throughout the forest). For something a bit different, try orienteering or geocaching - great fun for kids and adults alike.

Speaking of kids, there’s plenty to keep them entertained. High Beach Visitor Centre has interactive displays and information about the forest’s history and wildlife. There are picnic areas dotted around, so pack a hamper and make a day of it. In summer, you can even hire rowing boats at Hollow Pond - perfect for a lazy afternoon on the water.

Epping Forest District Council, in partnership with Places Leisure, is proud to announce the official opening of the brand-new Epping Leisure Centre. The facility welcomed its first visitors at 9am on Monday, 12th January 2026.

Epping Leisure Centre...

Located on Bakers Lane, the state-ofthe-art facility replaces the existing Epping Sports Centre on Hemnall Street and form an integral part of the wider regeneration project for the town.

Designed to be the most energyefficient leisure centre in the district, Epping Leisure Centre is a key milestone in the council’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. The centre will feature cutting-edge air-sourced heat pumps, advanced digital technologies, and the highest levels of insulation to significantly reduce energy consumption and minimise future carbon emissions and operational costs.

Epping Leisure Centre will offer a comprehensive range of facilities to meet the diverse needs of the community, including: a Main Swimming Pool, a Learner Pool, a Sports Hall, a Health & Fitness Gym, Studios and Squash Courts.

The project’s being delivered by Epping Forest District Council in partnership with Places Leisure, who have designed and built the new facility with their construction partner Pellikaan Construction.
