BOLD hearing: What did voters OK? BY JESSICA ANDERSON CONTRIBUTING WRITER
June 24, outside a courtroom at the Washington County Courthouse, about 50 people gathered, many of whom wore red t-shirts reading “strong community strong schools.” They were waiting for the hearing of Melisa Douglas versus Stillwater Area Schools to begin. Erick Kaardal, the attorney representing Douglas, argued that due to their phrasing of the ballot language for a May 2015 bond, the school district did not receive adequate legal advice. Therefore the plans for the COURTESY OF KRISTA THOMAS allotted money – changed with the school board’s approval of the BOLD A group in support of keeping Marine, Withrow and Oak Park elementary schools (Building Opportunities to Learn open gathered at the Washington County Courthouse June 24 for a hearing on and Discover) consolidation plan in whether the Stillwater school district acted outside its authority in approving SEE BOLD, PAGE 2

Spirituality, sustainability to be discussed
Marine author Judy Stern and St. Paul author and radio host Karen Olson Johnson will come together next Sunday in a conversation hosted by Stillwater’s Valley Bookseller. Topics are sure to include but aren't limited to: intuition, Native American wisdom, spirituality, sustainability, and care for Planet Earth and the people on it. As described previously in the Country Messenger, Stern has been a mother, student, gallery owner, clothing designer, shopkeeper and teacher. Now she’s the author of a trio of literary journals with the series title “Teachings from Mother Earth.” Part lived experience, part history lesson, the books outline attitudes and perspectives Stern has gained over a lifetime, following little but her intuition. The series is strongly influenced by decades of learning from American Indians about their traditional cultures. SEE AUTHOR, PAGE 2
