Mooneye, sturgeon, microplastics in trout: New research revealed at ‘Rendezvous’

Marine artist’s work on exhibit The Minneapolis Club will host an exhibition of original artwork by Marine artist Bob White during the month of November. Many of the images are of familiar upper Midwestern sporting themes. Others are records of White’s outdoor experiences from Alaska to Argentina. While visitors are welcome to walk the show at any time, there will also be an informal opening on Thursday, Nov. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. to which the public is invited. Use of the club’s parking ramp is complementary for the event. The Minneapolis Club Edward Curtis Gallery 729 2nd Avenue South Minneapolis, MN 55402. Phone: 612-332-2292.

In the swiftly flowing waters of the St. Croix River, a federally endangered species of mussel called the spectaclecase shelters among boulders on patches of gravel and sand. It’s not easy to make babies when you’re spectaclecase. First, the male must release sperm into the river current, hopefully upstream of a lady mussel. If a female that is siphoning water for food and oxygen intercepts mussel sperm in that water, she can fertilize her eggs.

River Grove sixth graders explored the outdoors during a five-day learning program at Camp Widjiwagan on the edge of the Boundary Waters.

River Grove students head north This fall, sixth graders at River Grove Community School had a five-day outdoor learning experience at YMCA Camp Widjiwagan on the edge of the Boundary Waters in Northern Minnesota. Students stayed in cabins and learned about the magic and wonder of the northwoods through a program that com-

bined environmental education and experiential learning. Favorite activities included canoeing, hiking, predator-prey games and learning about voyageurs. "This is a new tradition at River Grove that will continue for every sixth grade class,” reported River Grove parent and program leader Stephanie Le-

To grow into adult mussels, however, there is one last step. When the female spectaclecase expels her microscopic larvae into the water, the glochidia (baby mussels) have to attach to the gills of a passing fish – but only the right kind of fish — in order to grow into juveniles that can live independently on the river bottom. For years, scientists have wondered which species of fish acts as the larval host for spectaclecase. At this year’s St. Croix Research Rendezvous, they finally revealed the answer. The annual St. Croix Research Rendezvous is a unique one-day event organized by the St. Croix Watershed Research Station and hosted by Warner Nature Center to share the latest research on water, wildlife, geology, and botany in the St. Croix River Basin. During the conference, scientists give 20-minute briefs on their latest projects, providing attendees with an overview of how they did their work and what they learned in the process. At this year’s Research Rendezvous, attendees learned the answers to several zoological conundrums, including, “Who carries SEE RENDEZVOUS, PAGE 2
