Marine council approves offer for school purchase

Candidate Q&As Marine Mayor Glen Mills First elected in 1998, Marine Mayor Glen Mills is running unchallenged.

know the history of my Swedish ancestors and meeting my Swedish relatives ignited when I was living in Brazil during my undergrad. In 2014 I met two Swedes named Per and Per who, after knowing me for less than 15 minutes, said I’d be a fool not to audition for the show “Allt För Sverige.” At the time I was more focused on my career and didn’t think

1. Please share a little bit about yourself and your background. I am an Army combat vet and St. Paul police sergeant eager to give back to the community. I have my M.A. in Public Safety Administration, and lead a successful nonprofit. I am civically engaged. Our family loves Marine, and I want to work to preserve our vibrancy and quality-of-life. Anderson 2. Many residents complain about poor internet service in this area. As a city official what would you do to improve internet service in Marine? This is a top concern of respondents to my resident priority survey, and a personal frustration as well. I’ve already started researching this issue in earnest. The existing franchise agreement (which needs updating) between Marine and Midco is about providing internet through coaxial cable to residents that fit a density requirement (20 homes per cable mile), but doesn’t address variance in subscriber fees, higher speeds, or how to provide internet to those outside the density requirement (approx. 30 percent of residents). I have called for a citizen-led task force to study this problem and make recommendations to the council. I’ve spoken with many subject matter experts locally in the field of IT eager to help. Other options include hive technology, broadband wireless, and grant opportunities for study and infrastructure. If we are to attract young families and support businesses we must provide access to high-speed, dependable internet to our entire population. 3. Aside from internet service, what are two important issues facing the City of Marine and how would you work to address them? I strongly believe the sustained viability of Marine is inextricably tied to the presence of an elementary school in our town. The River Grove Wilder campus is wonderful, but it presents longterm infrastructure and leasing difficulties. I support acquisition of the school building, and I pledge to work with stakeholders (to include the RG board) to bring River Grove home to Marine. There are opportunities to bring the wider community into this process, and strengthen our school and support young families in their

The City of Marine last week made official a $950,000 offer to buy Marine Elementary School.

BY SUZANNE LINDGREN EDITOR@COUNTRYMESSENGER.COM

The Marine on St. Croix City Council approved a $950,000 offer last Wednesday to buy the Marine school property. The bid now goes to the Stillwater school board for review and potential approval.

The city council plans to pay for the property with 30-year general obligation bonding. Tentatively, the plan is for River Grove Elementary to expand into the school without giving up its current campus in Wilder Forest. The Marine Area Community School Board would decide how to split the campus

in the future, with an expected move in date of June 2020. Once the school is in use, bond repayments and maintenance costs would be funded by student lease aid. For the estimated 22 months between the purchase and the school’s inhabitation, SEE COUNCIL, PAGE 2

and what inspired you to try out? First, I’ve always been curious about my living Swedish relatives and ancestors since I was a young kid. Growing up, I’d attend huge family reunions which I enjoyed but there was never much emphasis on our living Swedish relatives. It was a gray area in my life that I couldn’t let go of but didn’t know how to take action on. Really wanting to
