For the past six months a group of Marine residents have worked together to research the history of Marine itself. This effort has all been part of a project to place historical signifying signs around the city center. “To educate and inspire our residents and visitors” said Andy Kramer who presented an update to the city council on Oct. 13. In addition to Kramer the group includes Jack Warren, Mary Vogel, Anne Reich, and Fitzie Heimdahl. They have, over the course of their research, discovered 19 possible sites that they feel could have their own sign around the city center. Kramer explained, after statements from the council expressing concerns about a clutter of signage, that by no means do all 19 sites need to be marked; this was just the results of their research. “The saturation of signs bothers me” stated Mayer Glen Mills to the agreement of the council. The total project could potentially cost the city up to $15,000. However, the city is planning on applying for a grant that could potentially provide $10,000. The fi fteen thousand is still within the budget the city has set aside; they have been hoping to be able to do signage of this kind for awhile. The grant program accepts applications four times every year, the next opportunity being Jan. However, in order to apply the details of

Trick-or-treating should be an activity that all kids can look forward to. However, for those who have food allergies it’s either restricted or dangerous. It’s heartbreaking to think that a child might miss out on the fun of Halloween because of an allergy. This is where the Teal

Pumpkin Project comes in. The project originated in Tennessee with the Food Allergy Community of East Tennessee, becoming a national campaign in 2014. The concept is pretty simple: place a teal pumpkin outside your home if you will be handing out non-food treats to trick-or-treaters. Stickers, bubbles, glow sticks, and crayons are all options to give instead of, or

May Township Moves to Manage Residential Renewable Energy BY GREG SEITZ CONTRIBUTING WRITER

May Township should soon have a legal framework for residents who want to install solar panels on their property. At its Oct. 6 meeting, the town board discussed a draft residential solar ordinance and prepared it for a public hearing later this month. The new ordinance will provide guidance for people who want to generate their own renewable electricity, as well as protections for neighbors who want to preserve the scenic rural environment. In June, seeking to preserve the town’s

non-industrial character, the board prohibited new commercial solar facilities, which would provide energy for multiple customers. “[Solar panels] appear to be universally unliked by whoever has to look at it but doesn’t see the benefit,” supervisor John Pazlar said. The draft ordinance is intended to tie the energy benefit to the viewshed impact. It was drafted based on the township’s existing outbuilding policy, which dictates setbacks and size of pole barns and other nonhome structures. Like SEE MAY, PAGE 5

Gathering of glasses The Scandia-Marine Lions celebrate the success of Sight Day. Prescription eye glasses, readers, and sun glasses are all accepted. These donations are taken to Rochelle, Wis. where they are cleaned before being shipped to a third world country. Once there an optician will try to match the prescriptions to peoples’ specific needs.
