Intent on not wasting his summer, a 15 year old from Marine on St. Croix headed north last June, successfully hiking 250 miles of the 300-mile Superior Hiking Trail, most of it alone. Maxwell Smitten first visited the trail a few years ago with Camp Widjiwagan. He returned with his mother, Kristina Smitten, hiking from Split Rock to Silver Bay. On that second trip, he met a trail volunteer who had hiked from end to end. Inspiration struck. But it wasn’t until after the summer between eighth and Smitten ninth grade that he

With an end goal of re-erecting and restoring the Hilltop Tower Barn that stood near the Scandia Café until 2014, the Scandia Heritage Alliance has planned a fundraising progressive dinner. The group’s board — comprised of Scandia Mayor Christine Maefsky and residents Sarah Porubcansky, Susan Rodsjo, John Herman, Pam Plowman Smith and Leila Denecke — is considering possible locations for the historic structure. They’re also determining how it might be used to serve the community. “We’re excited but it’s going to take some work,” Plowman Smith said. “We also think it’s a
