Soaring Eagles win blue at State Fair Members take home individual awards BY SUZANNE LINDGREN EDITOR@COUNTRYMESSENGER.COM
The project had been in the works since August 2015, and
was no small feat. It involved planting two 8-by-25-foot demonstration gardens at Oren Road and Olgilvie Avenue in Scandia, a coordinated effort between the Soaring Eagles 4-H Club, volunteers from the Friends of Scandia Parks & Trails and others in the community. In June, the collective planted
400 wildflowers to establish the demonstration gardens, part of a day of learning and celebration in honor of pollinator species. Soaring Eagle club members Sophia and Olivia Nienaber presented the club’s Pollinator Habitat Park project at the Minnesota SEE WINNERS, PAGE 9
River Association debuts Pedal Paddle BY JESSICA ANDERSON CONTRIBUTING WRITER
This weekend the St. Croix River Association (SCRA) will be hosting a new event called Pedal Paddle; an idea which has become quite popular across the country. As the name suggests the main activities involved are bicycling and rowing (kayaks, canoes, etc.). With specifics on the SCRA website, the event will kick off at 9:30
a.m. and go until 3 p.m., however there really is no time restraint. It’s an “at your own pace” event with time set aside in the middle for lunch in Marine. One of the main reasons for this event is to celebrate and utilize the new bike racks that have been placed in the community through an REI (Recreation Equipment, Inc.) grant. ‘Once Upon a River’ coming to Marine
Dan Chouinard’s “Once Upon a River” returns to the stage Oct. 15, 7 p.m., at the Marine Village Hall. Butch Thompson, the River City Quartet, and the 30-voice Festival Chorus directed by Marty Harding will be featured. Tickets are available at brownpapertickets.com. For more information, go to MarineCommunityLibrary.org or call 651-433-5569. St. Croix Valley residents are familiar with this well-loved Festival Theatre production. This fall, with the Auditorium theatre under construction, the show has been embraced by the Marine Library Association (MarLA) with all proceeds going to support the role of this nonprofit organization in Marine on St. Croix. For more than 10 years, Dan Chouinard (along with other artists) has produced “Once Upon a River,” an anthology of music, poetry and prose in celebration of Earth Day and the St. Croix River. This year marks our nation’s centennial celebration of the National Parks, and “Once Upon a River” will recognize the importance of the St. Croix River to all of us. A unique aspect of this year’s program is the musical and photographic collaboration of Marty Harding and her husband Gary Noren, who spent the month of July as artists in residence at Pine Needles, the historic James Taylor Dunn cabin on the St. Croix. This program, sponsored by the St. Croix Watershed Research Station, has brought artists to the region to interpret the St. Croix River and study with scientists for the past 15 years. Through the program, Harding is creating a choral composition entitled “Bound to the River,” and Noren has captured the beauty of the St. Croix and the work
