Enrollment opened over the weekend for fall 2017 at the Marine Area Community School (MACS), a public, non-district elementary school for children living in and near Marine on St. Croix. The deadline for the lottery is 4 p.m. Aug. 25. Applications are available
on the school’s website, marineareaschool.org. The drawing will also determine rank in any waiting lists. Applications received after Aug. 25 will be added to the bottom of the waiting list in the order they’re received. Approval of the policy was one of the charter school board’s first official actions at the inaugural board meeting, Aug. 13.
Marine, Withrow and Oak Park elementary schools. Although the board did not reveal specifics on the other two locations, all will meet the needs of the charter’s curriculum and design model, envisioned as a place-based, student-centered learning environment. The board plans to make its selection in January and occupy the space in July 2017.
Building Board members are looking at three spaces to potentially house the charter school. One is the current elementary school, though District 834 cannot discuss the option until a ruling has been made on the legality of the district’s decision to close the NEWS 651-433-3845 editor@countrymessenger.com

school organizers hope to acquire money for hiring and other start up costs. Changes to the application will focus on the language and structure of the application itself, and should not change proposed programming at the Marine Area Community School, according to the board. The school’s mission is to use local history, natural resources, and arts and civic stewardship of the community as a foundation for its curriculum.
