Congressional seat Republican Tom Emmer is wrapping up his first term representing the 6th Congressional District. Previously a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, he represented District 19B from 2004 to 2011. Though he was known in state politics as an unEmmer apologetic conservative and tea party supporter, his congressional attitude has been less strident. Emmer calls trade, including international trade, a top priority, citing Minnesota’s economic dependence on agriculture and

Franconia iron artists pouring molten iron into community molds.

Franconia Sculpture Park is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2016 with events that celebrate two decades of big dreams, big space, and big art. Heat up your summer to 2700° fahrenheit at the Community Collaboration Hot Metal Pour. This sizzling experience, as old as the sculpture park itself, includes the chance to watch professional sculptors work with molten metal and the opportunity for both experi-

manufacturing. As a member of Congress he supported the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA, which fasttracks proposed international trade agreements) and legislation supporting training for American workers displaced by foreign trade agreements. He also has voted to restrict women’s access to abortion and in favor instituting a stronger screening process for refugees from Iraq and Syria. A.J. Kern identi fies as a cons t it ut io n a l conservative and has worked as a county planner and served as Kern a planning commissioner. She has criticized Emmer for supporting the Every Student Succeeds Act (which replaced 2001’s No Child Left Behind Act, retaining annual standardized testing requirements but shifting accountability to states) and the TPA. She is opposed to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). If elected, she says she would aim to downsize federal overreach, reduce spending, re-

ject weak trade agreements, stop illegal immigration and place a moratorium on the acceptance of international refugees.

Patrick Munro, an Iraq War Army veteran, served as the anti-terrorism officer for his last unit. If elected, M u n r o says he would introduce legislation Munro giving veteran and military families preference for federal jobs. He also identifies as a constitutional conservative and says his top legislative priorities include expanding the economy, securing the Mexico-U.S. border and enforcing current immigration law.

‘Gulliver’s Travels’ to screen outside Hay Lake School How many remember going to the drive-in movie theater as a kid? In 2016, drive-in movies are on the decline and the younger generation may never get the chance to feel what it’s like to watch a movie under the stars. But at dusk on Thurs., Aug. 11, the Washington County Historical Society will project the 1939 film “Gulliver’s Travels” onto the side of the Hay Lake School Museum. Free tours of the museum begin at 7:30 p.m. The film will begin at dusk. Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to sit on, and there is room on the grounds to park a few cars to truly give it

that “drive-in movie feeling.” Concessions will be available (popcorn, candy, soda, water, etc.) with all funds going to the Washington County Historical Society. “Gulliver’s Travels” follows seaman Lamuel Gulliver, the sole survivor of a shipwreck in a distant land whose people are no bigger than peanuts. Adventure ensues. With a run time of 76 minutes, “Gulliver’s Travels” is a great time for both children and adults. Children will enjoy the music and animation, while adults tend to enjoy the “it’s so bad its good” feel to this 1939 classic.
