Smith writes original story for Lilleskogen Park BY JASON SCHULTE EDITOR

Visitors to Scandia’s Lilleskogen Park Children’s Story Path are going to be in for a treat. Nationally published children’s literature author and Scandia native Debra Mitts-Smith debuted her newest book “Early to Bed, Late to Rise”, which tells the tale about Sven, the rooster and his interesting life on the farm. Smith explained the Scandia Parks board came to her husband, Marschall, and wonder if she’d be interested in writing a book. She already had one in mind. “I always like to write,” Debra

continued. “I love animals and I love photography.” A little revising occurred and the result came what was shown around the park. Sven, a rooster sleeps late and the hens are trying to find out why. “It tells the job of a rooster and you understand at the end,” Debra said. The photos accompany the text along the path are animals from Smith’s farm. “I think it was a great idea to have it along the story path,” Debra continued. The Smiths have called Scandia home for the last 12 years after Marschall took a job at 3M. “I didn’t want a home, so we took a farm instead,” Debra explained. “We

love it here. It’s been a great community. The countryside has been great and the wildlife has been amazing. Smith previously taught children’s and young adult literature at the University of Illinois. She has Master’s degrees in French and Library and Information Science and a PhD from the University of Illinois. Her publications include articles in Princeton University Library Chronicle and Library Trends, and a book chapter in From Colonialism to the Contemporary: Intertextual Transformation in World Children’s and Youth Literature and her book, Picturing the Wolf in Children’s Literature. “I hope people go and visit it,” she said.

Oak Park Heights man dies in car accident

Archaeologists nd new evidence of early St. Croix River residents Recent excavations have turned up tantalizing clues about prehistoric people. BY GREG SEITZ ST. CROIX 360

It was a hot and humid day like so many recently. The team of people slowly digging square pits on the banks of the St. Croix River were dripping sweat — while wearing face masks. Even the mosquitoes whining in their ears sounded warm. The young excavators scraped slowly at the soil using flat shovels, then sifted the dirt through screens. A stone stood out. One edge was straight and sharp. It showed chips that hinted it was hammered into this shape. The apprentice archaeologist who uncovered the stone handed it to her teacher, Dr. Ed Fleming of the Science Museum of Minnesota. He cleaned the dirt off with a soft brush, studied it, and agreed it appeared to be a scraper made by prehistoric people. It might have last been held by human hands a thousand years ago.

Holding it made the heat and humidity only seem like another connection to its makers, people who would have also swam in the St. Croix to cool off on a steamy summer day.

A 20-year-old Oak Park Heights man died July 16 due to the result of a motor vehicle versus commercial vehicle collision. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported at 6:20 p.m., deputies learned a dump truck was southbound on Manning Avenue North and a Nissan Sentra was northbound. Witnesses on scene reported the Nissan crossed over the centerline into oncoming traffic, causing a head on collision with the dump truck. Both vehicles had single occupants. The Nissan driver was pronounced dead at the scene after Washington County deputies, Bayport Fie and Lakeview EMS attempted lifesaving measures. Minnesota State Patrol assisted on scene.
