Social Enterprise Camp sparks creative solutions Students inspired to make a living making a difference Imagine a distribution system for getting locally grown organic foods to families in need. Or a business focused on recycling used and abandoned small watercraft such as kayaks and canoes. Or a program for recycling trash that is picked up along the St. Croix River. Come for the beauty, stay for the pie Cycling Scandia surveys cycle tourists “Such a beautiful bike ride around Scandia,” is what Janie O’Connor, Marlys Johnson and volunteers heard on July 1, 2, 3 and 4 as they handed out surveys to 62 cyclists in front of the Scandia Market & Mercantile. Cycling Scandia is a new initiative with city council endorsement. Its mission is to increase cyclist traffic to Scandia, potentially impacting economic growth by providing amenities that cyclist say they need and want. What cyclists said they needed was water and toilet facilities. What they wanted was pie and craft beer. Volunteers John Chrun, John Westphal, Mayor Christine Maefsky and Mary Hooley each spent a few hours handing out the surveys and visiting with cyclists from Shorewood, Maple Grove, Shoreview, Woodbury and all places in between. The cyclists like to stop at the Scandia Market for a protein bar or a banana. The Market ADVERTISING 651-433-3845 sales@osceolasun.com
