GreenStep Cities is a free, voluntary program designed to help Minnesota cities meet environmental sustainability goals through the implementation of 29 best practice actions. “This award is a great achievement for Scandia,” said Mayor Christine Maefsky of Scandia. “And by being part of the program, Scandia and our peers are helping to make Minnesota more resilient for the future while also helping our cities thrive economically.” Scandia reached Step Two in May after implementing eight of the program’s best practice actions, which aim to reduce costs and energy while encouraging innovation. “This recognition shows community mem-

bers and other cities across Minnesota that the City of Scandia is taking great steps in the direction of energy and resource conservation and innovation,” said City Administrator Neil Soltis, who serves as the GreenStep program lead with Scandia. Cities achieve Step
One recognition by passing a resolution to become a GreenStep City. Step Two requires cities to implement up to eight of the program’s best practice actions. To reach Step Three, cities must implement up to 16 best practice actions. In Step Four, cities track and submit met-
rics from a selection of categories, such as energy and water use, vehicle fleet efficiency, community and economic development, and more. Cities achieve Step Five status by documenting and demonstrating improvement SEE GREENSTEP, PAGE 2
The Stone House Museum’s collection of logging tools nearly doubled this month with a gift from Betty Walquist. The donation was made in honor of her late husband, Robert Walquist, a lifelong Marine resident and collector of historical objects. “Bob’s collection started with a small wall in the early 1970s and grew into the entire basement,” Betty said. He made a habit of attending auctions and estate sales, SEE TOOLS, PAGE 6

An iron, which would have sat on the stove to heat, is one of the only household objects among the 42 items donated by Betty Walquist from her husband Bob Walquist’s collection. Most of the donation was comprised of tools for logging and harvesting ice.

A folk school is set to join River Grove Elementary in Wilder Forest after an official OK from the May Town Board. The school will offer courses for a broad age span with an emphasis on traditional skills and project-based learning. Before plans for the school could move forward, May Township board members had to approve a modification to the Marine Area Community School’s conditional use permit. They did so July 5, allowing the Marine Mills Folk School to operate in tandem with River Grove. Additional car traffic and foot traffic to the site are not expected SEE SCHOOL, PAGE 2
