Marine resident wins Great Idea Grant ‘Power of St. Croix’ utility box project Transform mundane utility boxes into public art? That’s a Great Idea! Marine on St. Croix resident Fitzie Heimdahl is the winner of Stillwater Area Community Foundation’s sixth annual Great Idea Competition.

Heimdahl will receive a grant to launch the Power of the St. Croix Utility Box Mural Project.

The award was presented at the community foundation’s annual reception and fundraiser at the Lake Elmo Inn Event Center on May 16.

Each year, Stillwater Area Community Foundation accepts applications from local individuals, businesses, nonprofits and other groups who have an idea that will benefit our local communities, and who have the determination and ability to put it into action.

As outlined in the Country Messenger on March 28, Heimdahl’s winning Great Idea focuses on transforming plain, unsightly utility boxes into beautiful works of art.

The majority of the $6,750 grant funds will go towards the commissioning of original art from local artists, centered around the theme of the St. Croix River, to be applied to selected utility boxes.

Hay Lake School Museum readies for beer tasting

The Washington County Historical Society will host the 11th Annual Hay Lake Beer Tasting Fundraiser & Silent Auction on June 16, from 4 to 7 p.m.

The event is the keystone fundraiser for the Washington County Historical Society. This year, it will be sponsored by Sportsman’s Redneck Juice Bloody Mary Mix and include 10 breweries.

Many Minnesota favorites will participate: Joseph Wolf Brewing, Lift Bridge Brewing, Bent Paddle Brewing, Castle Danger Brewing, Fair State Brewing Cooperative, St. Croix Brewing Co., East Lake Craft Brewery, Bent Brewstillery, Surly and more.

The tasting features food from the Scandia-Marine Lions Club, B3 – Burgers Brats BBQ food truck and snacks by Dot’s Homestyle Pretzels. The Cutaways will perform live music.

Other additions to the 11th Annual Hay Lake Beer Tasting include Hammerschlagen and Joseph Wolf Brewing historical artifacts on display.

A presentation by Joseph Wolf Brewing’s owners will take place prior to the event at 3:30 p.m. in the Hay Lake School.

The event’s silent auction includes cleats signed

by Minnesota Twins player Glen Perkins and a puck autographed by Phil Housley. There is a golf package with green fees from the Les Bolstad, Tanners Brook and Oak Meadows courses along with other fine restaurants and destination points in the Twin Cities. Other items feature the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Lynx, Water Street Inn, Guthrie Theater and St. Croix Harley Davidson.

1860 Vintage Base Ball will be played on the grounds near the school from noon to 4 p.m. and is free to watch. Once you’re done watching “old time” base ball, walk over some beer, music, food and friends.

Admission is charged and participants must be 21 years or older. All proceeds benefit the Washington County Historical Society.

Ten years ago, the lake was considered one of the worst in Washington County. The water was murky, phosphorus and algae levels were high, and the Metropolitan Council gave the lake an “F” on its annual report card.

Ten of the covered boxes will be located within Lowell Park in Stillwater and 13 boxes will be within the city of Marine on St. Croix. Both cities have committed to co-funding the project.

According to Heimdahl, several cities across the country have completed similar projects to beautify and enliven their downtowns. He has previously worked

with Menomonie, Wis, and Minneapolis to introduce the concept. “This project will be the first of its kind in the St. Croix Valley,� said Heimdahl. “Besides recognizing local artists, it will also crate a distinct attraction within the Valley, encouraging visitors to stop and explore. Residents will also benefit by having increased access to the arts within their community.�

Cities and taxpayers stand to

benefit, too. Similar projects have proven to reduce graffiti and tagging on utility boxes, and the process used to apply the art will make it easier to clean and remove any graffiti that may occur in the future.

Artists who want to participate by creating a work of art for a utility box are invited to apply through ArtReach St. Croix (ArtReachStCroix.org/opportunities).

watershed district and Washington Conservation District (WCD) to re-design his lakeshore landscaping. He also volunteered to join a new program – Master Water Stewards – that trains and empowers volunteers to work on water issues in their communities. Through the program, Furey learned about watersheds, stormwater management, water policy, strategies for engaging friends and neighbors, and landscaping practices to reduce runoff pollution in urban and rural settings. This summer, for his capstone project, he is helping a neighbor with a native planting on her property and is also organizing a series of informative gatherings for people living on Bone Lake, including a pontoon tour and the pizza night in town.

The Master Water Stewards program (not to be confused with the similarly named Master Watershed Stewards

program) was developed

by Freshwater Society as a way to help amplify the impact of conservation districts and watershed management organizations in Minnesota.

Stewards receive 50 hours of free training through a combination of online instruction, in-person classes, and hands-on, outdoor activities. After becoming certified, Master Water Stewards provide 25 hours per year of volunteer support to their watershed organizations, helping to support outreach, education, and community engagement efforts.

Currently, the Washington Conservation District has funding from a Minnesota Clean Water grant to train and certify 20 stewards in Brown’s Creek, Carnelian-Marine-St. Croix, Comfort Lake – Forest Lake, Middle St. Croix, and South Washington Watersheds. Grant funding is also available to help stewards complete their capstone projects – projects such

as raingardens, shoreline plantings, and rural lands habitat improvement. The first cohort of stewards will be certified in November, and the WCD is currently recruiting 12-14 new stewards for the 2018-19 program, which will begin in October.

Though Master Water Stewards all share a passion for protecting water resources, their interest areas, capstone projects, and volunteer efforts are quite diverse.

Down the road from Scandia in Marine on St. Croix, steward-in-training John Goodfellow is working to develop a weed cooperative that could help local landowners manage invasive species such as buckthorn and garlic mustard. In Woodbury, Joan Nichols and Susan Goebel are creating a planting plan, and helping to design interpretive signs and lessons for two new outdoor classrooms at Lake and Middleton Schools.

has developed a habitat improvement plan for Marsh Creek Preserve and is recruiting volunteers to help remove buckthorn during the summer. In Lakeland, Sally Arneson will be planting native plants to stabilize an eroding ditch near the St. Croix River and, down in Cottage Grove, Cole Williams is restoring a piece of shoreline property on the Mississippi River.

In addition to helping local partners to stretch limited resources, the Master Water Stewards program offers area residents a meaningful way to make new friends and get involved in their communities. Since 2013, Freshwater Society has certified 141 stewards in the Twin Cities area, and there are another 70 currently in training.

A trailer was overturned and two vehicles had apparent damage after a crash north of the intersection of Hwy. 95 and Hwy. 97 on Friday night.

Traffic was slowed on Minnesota State Highway 95 Friday evening north of the intersection with Highway 97 by what appeared to be a two-vehicle crash. A trailer was overturned and two vehicles had apparent damage.

Scandia Fire and Rescue, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Patrol responded to the scene.

As of press time Monday morning, the Minnesota State Patrol had not posted a report offering further details about the crash, and was unable to answer the Messenger’s requests for more information.

A graduating Scandia teen has committed to swim for St. Catherine University beginning in the fall.

Katie Crum, 17 years old and a graduating senior at Chisago Lakes High School, also earned a merit-based Presidential Scholarship from the school. She plans to major in biology and public health on a pre-veterinary track. “I was looking at St. Kate’s but wasn’t really looking at swimming in college,� she said. “But the coach contacted me and said they’d love to have me swim for them.�

Before that, he earned three world championships and three Paralympics gold medals in the 100-meter backstroke (S10 class). “He was really supportive and seems like a great coach,� Crum said. “That’s how I decided I wanted to swim for them.�

Crum started swimming in seventh grade.

Although the first year was challenging, she stuck with it and earned the team’s MVP award last season. “I really like swimming,â€? she said. “It keeps me in shape. ‌ In the summer lake days are my favorite days.

But I’m pretty competitive. I like that feeling of looking over while you’re taking a breath and seeing the swimmer in the lane right next to you.�

unday is Father’s Day, a time to acknowledge the pater familias (the male head of the household, as the Romans referred to him), pop, dad — he has many names, many jobs and is truly never appreciated until he is gone.

Even though I have been a father for over half of my life, when I consider Father’s Day, my thoughts invariably go to my own father, Arved Stangl, otherwise known as “The Chief,” who passed away in 2001.

The chief was a hard-working Publisher man and got his moniker from his constant assertion that he Tom Stangl was in charge. With six children, doing anything was a struggle.

Children often have the annoying habit of questioning authority figures and my father, like every other father, had a saying to quash these potential uprisings. He’d say “we have too many chiefs and not enough Indians. I’M the chief, and YOU are the Indians. What I say goes.”

The chief had spoken. End of discussion. Time to buckle down and get the job done.

The chief had many catch phrases that he would apply to problems or questions. Many were veritable verbal Swiss army knives, being able to be utilized in many different situations, much like the common butter knife he often used that did extra service as a screwdriver, putty knife and pry bar.

I’m sure your father had similar phrases.

Here are a few of the chief’s nuggets of wisdom: After a long day at the garage: “I like people less than I do squirrels...and I HATE the damn squirrels!” The chief disliked working with the public and had fought an ongoing war against squirrels invading the attic of our home. He often counseled us to “avoid working with the public.” He worked in an era when customers were often allowed in the shop to observe and comment on their automotive repairs as they were being made.

The chief did not suffer fools well.

On work and play: “If you’re not making money, you’re spending money.” Truer words have never been spoken.

Answer for any request for material possessions he did not want to grant: “People in Hell want ice water, too.”

“You need the right tools to do the job.” This sage advice was often given while trying to pry swollen storm windows loose with a butter knife.

In the summer, when gasoline was 25 cents a gallon, we would often pile into the Rambler station wagon and go for a drive, just to cool off and have something to do. Many times, when we would drive past the local Dairy Sweet, we would implore the chief to stop for ice cream. His response: “There’s ice cream at home.” After I became an adult, he confessed that he didn’t have enough money to buy one cone, let alone four or five. But we did truly always have ice cream at home.

When we weren’t paying attention to what he was trying to tell us, his favorite line, used by my sister during her years as a middle school teacher, was “no one ever learned anything while they were talking.”

Don’t even get me started on holding the trouble light.

Happy Father’s Day to all the “chiefs” out there.

PRINT Act could pause newsprint tariffs

A

bout a month ago I wrote a column briefing readers on proposed tariffs to newsprint from Canadian paper mills (see “Could tariffs kill the small town newspaper?” in the May 9 edition for more detail).

While the specific effects of these new duties on the Messenger are still unknown to me, consider this report from National Newspaper Association President Susan Rowell. “All over the nation, we are hearing from newspaper executives who are experiencing lasting damage to their news-gathering missions,” she said in a release last Friday. “The tariffs have already increased print production prices Editor up to 30 percent this year in many Suzanne Lindgren areas, and smaller newspapers are being told they may not be able to h purchase paper at all this summer as the market contracts in response to these sanctions. I believe many in Congress see how dire our situation is and they want to help.”

I imagine the ultimate impacts of such an increase could take many forms: Perhaps the company would raise advertising rates or newsstand prices to try to absorb costs. Or, as many of the tariffs’ critics have suggested, perhaps the Messenger would simply shutter its doors.

But there is some good news. Last Friday, the NNA informed members that legislation to temporarily pause the trade sanctions was introduced in the US House of Representatives by a bi-partisan coalition led by Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD) and Rep. Charlie Crist, (D-FL).

The PRINT Act (HR 6031) would suspend the tariffs while the Department of Commerce studies whether the newspaper industry is healthy enough financially to absorb the new costs.

Why were the trade sanctions imposed? Because of two cases brought to the Department of Commerce and International Trade Commission last year. The complainants allege that Canadian newsprint suppliers are selling paper in the US below market prices, thanks to subsidies from their government.

Final determinations are expected in August by the International Trade Commission, following a July 17 hearing, and in September by the Commerce Department.

The best summer burgers

D

oes anyone else love it when you’re walking through the neighborhood and you smell someone grilling?

I feel like a cartoon character with my nose leading my helpless body as it floats behind following the trail of an invisible scent.

Who doesn’t love grilled food?

Chicken, ribs, and hot dogs are delicious, but grilled burgers are irresistible—when they are done perfectly.

There is something about a tender burger piled high with Wisconsin melted cheddar cheese, Wild Chow bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo. My mouth is watering just Lisa Erickson writing about it.

I’ve been to enough BBQs to know not all burgers are created equal.

Last week, I was taking the dog for a walk, when I walked into a fog of grilled burger scent.

As I walked past the house, I turned my head in hopes of getting look at the cooking operation. I saw a large plume smoke billow up from a grill and knew how they were cooking. There is a less smoky and tastier way.

Burgers taste better when they are cooked in a heavy cast iron pan or griddle.

Grilling over the open flame makes “okay” burgers, but for sublime burgers, cook them on a griddle on top of the grill.

Cooking them on a griddle keeps the grease next to the burger to help cook them for the best tasting burgers.

In 2014, the New York Times did a piece on the best burgers based on an old documentary called “Hamburger America” from 2005. They agreed cooking burgers this way was best. And, after my own trials, I concur.

There are many components to a good burger, but how you cook them is the most important.

Place the griddle or a cast iron pan on the grates and cook away. This creates a barrier from the flame and the grease won’t burn as it drips to the bottom of the grill and it helps cook and flavor the burger. The flavor comes from the grease.

Keep the heat reasonable. I cook over medium heat—about 400 degrees on an outdoor grill.

I also add a little seasoning to the meat when you cook it. Don’t let it sit. It can leach some of the juice out, which will make your burgers dry.

Keep it simple and less smoky. Use a griddle on the grill or cook it on the stove top. Season right before you cook.

Perfect Summer Burgers 16 oz ground 80/20 chuck steak meat, divided into 4 2 Tbsp. Butter Seasoned salt 4 buns 4 thick slices of Wisconsin cheddar cheese Heat the grill to 400 degrees. Place a cast iron pan or griddle on the grill grates when nice hot.

Melt the butter. Place the piles of meat on the griddle in the butter and press down with a spatula or a burger press. Flatten the meat to the size of the bun. Cook for about 2 minutes and season. Flip and top with cheese. Cook until done. Place on buns and top with your favorite toppings.

A.J.’s disappearance feeds Marvin & Maxine’s

s was usually the case in late September, leaves and temperatures were falling as the Good Folks of Lennox Valley woke on Wednesday morning. In a small town like ours, it was common to rise earlier than most of the residents in Springfield, 11 miles away.

We had more than our share of farmers and folks who grew up on Columnist farms, so waking up early was just Kevin Slimp part of our DNA. A lot of folks missed hearing Raymond Cooper’s voice welcome them at “sign on” each morning on Talk Radio 88.3. The station still played “God Bless The USA,” but with the election four weeks past, Cooper still hadn’t returned to the air.

The station carried mostly syndicated programming to fill the void. Valley residents were getting their fill of information about UFO sightings in England, political conspiracy theories and radio preachers. In an effort to appease his loyal listeners, Raymond asked Marvin Walsh to host “Renderings with Raymond” each afternoon until his return.

Wednesday would mark Marvin’s first appearance as host of the show.

Wednesday mornings were special in our town. That’s when the Lennox Valley Hometown News came out each week. You would think as small as our town was, everyone would already know

any news before it came out in the local paper. Whether they did or not, the Valley depended on Iris Long, editor, to give them the facts each week and she held their faith as a sacred trust. Sure, there was the usual bickering about slanted reporting during the mayoral election but that was history and just about everyone in the Valley woke up on Wednesday morning hoping to learn something new about A.J. Fryerson’s disappearance.

Iris went back and forth at least a dozen times before settling on a headline. She had been a reporter and editor for longer than most Valley residents could remember and she felt the newspaper should report the news, not create it. After much deliberation, she settled on, “Press Conference Breeds More Questions Than Answers.”

In essence, she described the eight-minute conference from beginning to end. There were three persons present: Chief Dibble, Iris Long, and the newest member of the press, Marvin Walsh. She didn’t mention it in her story but Iris couldn’t help but note how excited Walsh was about being allowed into the conference.

Apparently, A.J.’s disappearance wasn’t big news in Springfield and it was obvious Chief Dibble was disappointed in the turnout.

The facts were straightforward.

No one had seen Fryerson in three weeks. Dibble had obtained a warrant to search the home.

Nothing was out of order. A.J. was not present but his car was in the driveway. Nothing seemed out of place or unusual in the home.

There were no signs of foul play.

When it came time for questions, Long asked if the chief had contacted any friends or family.

So far, Dibble had been unable to locate any friends or family of Fryerson. He seemed to be a loner.

Knowing the history between Dibble and A.J., Marvin asked, “Did you kill him, Chief?”

At that point, Iris was afraid she was going to have to break up a fight. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed.

“No,” Dibble responded, “I did not.”

Maxine Miller did not need a press conference to fill her popular column, “Rumor Has It,” with less inhibited observations about Marvin’s publicly announced suspicions.

“Rumor has it,” she began, “Marvin Walsh caused quite the commotion at the Hoffbrau on Tuesday when he named Chief Dibble his lead suspect in the disappearance of A.J. Fryerson.”

Maxine loved to stir things up, and Iris had learned long ago readers expected a well-stirred pot.

Long could only imagine what Walsh would have to say on his show at noon but with all she knew about Marvin, she wasn’t surprised by his opening words, “I smell a cover up!”

Iris felt it best to keep her final letter from A.J. to herself for the moment. There was no telling what might happen if word of its contents got out.

A different kind of bird

L

ying in the grass flat on his belly made it impossible to see the big Tom Turkey but all the gobbling made it sound like he was coming in closer. Carefully raising his head to try to get a peek at the bird through the sparse knee high grass was risky but Josh Bennett, my adult son and hunting companion on this hunt felt it had to be done. He needed to know what was going on.

We had started out the morning hunting together in Paradise Woods with its many mowed trails with a trout stream running through it, but we split up going to gobbles off in the distance. The gobbler Josh found on the other side of a newly planted field Wild River did not respond to the diaphragm call in his mouth, it disappeared Trails into the brush. when suddenly Josh was startled by a closer gobble!

Another gobbler only 100 yards away out in the dirt field had also spotted then hen.

This Big Tom was anchored to his spot calling to the hen expecting her to come to him, standing erect in full strut. She wanted nothing to do with him. Josh started to call to him using a variety of soft yelps and purrs that a willing hen would make.

It had no affect on this gobbler. Getting more aggressive Josh made fast cutting calls mixed in with some soft yelps that got a few gobbles and strutting displays but he still wouldn’t move from his spot. Then it all changed.

“I must have hit the right note or series of calls because all of sudden that Big Gobbler looked right at me and gobbled and move in my direction. He was coming in but very slowly right at me as if he was on a rope,” added Josh.

County Board approves new BENNETT: Big Tom zoning, land use ordinance FROM PAGE 5

The Washington County Board of Commissioners approved a new Zoning/Land Use Ordinance June 5, along with a revised Development Code, after repealing the county’s current guidelines.

The code is official controls for the purposes of regulating the physical development of land in the unincorporated areas of the county.

The revisions made to the current development code include: · partial transfer of the zoning/land use authority; · a buffer ordinance; · a consistent chapter format; and · general housekeeping items.

At the beginning of 2017, the county transferred to township zoning authority, retaining for the county authority over: · subdivisions in townships without a subdivision ordinance; · subsurface sewage treatment systems; · Lower St. Croix Bluffland and Shoreland Areas in the St. Croix River Management District; · shoreland areas in the shoreland management district; · mining in sand and gravel pits; · floodplains; and · official map areas.

It’s hard to judge distance when you are lying flat on your belly with no points of reference in a flat dirt field. Seeing the bird occasionally Josh was able to make out a little more detail as the gobbler slowly moved in. Finally, Josh realized that the big bird had to be in range. With the gun already pointing the right direction Josh carefully raised the shotgun and put the bead on the bird. The shot echoed through the morning.

“I didn’t realize what I had shot at until I got close to the bird laying in the field when I noticed all of the different combinations of colors on this gobbler. It had some genetic differences from the normal wild eastern turkey we have here. The different cream and tan colors on the wings and back and the big fanned tail was almost rust colored. It looked pretty amazing.”

Housley files for U.S. Senate special election

Karin Housley, Republican-endorsed candidate for United States Senate, officially files the necessary paperwork with the Minnesota Secretary of State's office, June 4.

On Monday, June 4, Karin Housley filed paperwork with the Minnesota Secretary of State’s office to run in the special election for United States Senate.

The seat is currently held by Tina Smith. Smith was appointed to the position after Al Franken’s January resignation following accusations of sexual harassment.

Housley’s filing came on the heels of an endorsement by the Republican Party of Minnesota at its state convention in Duluth. Housley currently serves in the Minnesota State Senate, representing District 39 including the Scandia-Marine area. She is also a wife, mother, grandmother and small business owner.

“Since we began this journey in December, our campaign’s message has struck a chord with Minnesotans across the state,” she wrote in a press release announcing her campaign. “People are tired of the partisan logjam and obstruction that has prevented anything from getting done – and this campaign aims to change that. I’m thrilled to make it official.

“But,” she continued, “the hard work is just beginning. Over the next five months, we’ll be visiting all corners of our state, learning more about the challenges Minnesotans are facing, and talking about how we can work together for meaningful change. By working hard, playing fair, and doing the right thing, we can win this race.”

Minnesota’s primary election is August 14 and the general election is November 6. The special election coincides with a regularly scheduled U.S. Senate election. That seat is currently held by Amy Klobuchar.

Northbound I-35 ramp to eastbound Highway 8 in Forest Lake reopens

Crews finished paving the area around the Highway 8 interchange in Forest Lake and were able to re-open the northbound I-35 ramp to eastbound Highway 8 ahead of schedule on Saturday morning, June 2.

The northbound I-35 ramp to eastbound Highway 8 is currently not scheduled to close again during this project.

Motorists are advised to check 511 for daily real-time traffic updates by visiting www.511mn. org or calling 5-1-1.

Traffic delays and backups are expected throughout the course of the two-year project. Motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

The work is part of the I-35 North Metro Split project, which includes resurfacing the existing pavement from the I-35W/I-35E split to Highway 8; replacing the Highway 97 bridge with a diverging diamond interchange; replacing the northbound I-35W bridge over I-35E and the westbound Highway 8 bridge over I-35. The project will provide a better ride quality, as well as improve safety and traffic flow at the Highway 97 interchange. Washington County Parks offering ‘Passport to Parks’ for summer fun Washington County Parks is offering a program called “Passport to Parks” to add fun to this summer’s parks visits.

The passport, available at all Washington County Parks offices, has a map of those parks, along with “scavenger hunt” type questions about each of the major parks and trails in the county. Participants may receive a prize by completing all questions from at least five out of the nine parks. Bring the completed passport to any park office to receive a prize.

Park offices are at Big Marine Park Reserve, Historic Courthouse, Lake Elmo Park Reserve, and St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park.

Passports will be collected through Nov. 1.

A technology update at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office has disrupted the regular release of daily incident reports to the Country Messenger. Staff are in contact with the sheriff’s office in an attempt to have the reports delivered again. Stay tuned.

A Swedish couple visited Scandia’s Eko Backen in late May to learn more about hosting barn weddings.

After purchasing a farm in southern Sweden in October 2016, Pernilla and Ulf Rönndahl opened Stallgården the following May. A year in, they were continuing to refine their concept. Minnesota seems to be on the forefront when it comes to barn weddings, they noted, and the state has many links to Sweden. The couple contacted Eko Backen owner John Fraley in April

to see if they could come for an inspirational visit.

“We worked day and night for eight months before we opened and had our first event,” they told Fraley.

“We have followed your business for some time via the internet. We think you have a fantastic barn, beautiful areas and an incredibly nice offer to your customers.

“We would like to learn more from you,” they continued. “Learn more about your concept, try to catch ideas and get inspiration to develop our concept even better in Sweden.”

Fraley hosted the Rönndahls on May 25.

Nestled into downtown Marine, Brookside Bar & Grill has been an integral part of the community for over 80 years.

Brookside owners, Greg Miller, Matt Miller and Jeanne MacGregor, purchased the property in 2010 and began extensive renovations on the historic building.

“We talked about it over breakfast one morning and decided to go for it,” Matt Miller said.

The site was built as a creamery in 1930 but only operated as one for about a year. The building still has a brook running through its basement, which was likely used to keep the creamery’s milk cold.

After running through the restaurant and under the street, the brook cascades into the St. Croix River.

The building was first converted to a bar and restaurant in 1939. Since acquiring new owners, the Brookside has undergone restoration in the kitchen, dining room, rest rooms, grounds, exterior and back-of-the-house.
