Scandia grants liquor license to new pizza joint BY KYLE WEAVER CONTRIBUTING WRITER
A new pizza parlor appears to be headed Scandia’s way. The Scandia City Council last week granted a liquor license for Brookside Pizza & Hoagies, a new business to be located in the former Chikos Bar & Grill building. Matt Miller, a co-owner of the nearby Brookside Bar & Grill in Marine on St. Croix, said during the May 15 meeting the Brookside ownership group will also be running the new establishment.

Sixth grade tradition continues with 'Aladdin, Jr.' Genie, played by Nolan Bednar, sings to a shocked but impressed Aladdin, played by Ike Domke Hoekstra, in River Grove's sixth grade play. With the play, students continue a decades-old tradition started by students at Marine Elementary.
Three Forest Lake students earn perfect ACT scores A trio of Forest Lake Area High School students learned earlier this month that they each earned a perfect score of 36 on their ACTs. Scandia brothers Matthew and Adam Strupp, a junior and sophomore, respectively, and Ben Cartford, a junior from Linwood, all aced the national college entrance test they took on April 3. Earning a perfect 36 is a statistical rarity. Statewide, only 79 students out of 61,000 earned a 36 in 2017. Cartford and the Strupps are part of the approximately one tenth of one percent of test takers across the nation to achieve such an accolade. A score of 36 is created by averaging a student’s scores in the subject areas of English, reading, mathematics, and science. All three students credit preparation and perseverance for their success.

Tagged bighead carp leads DNR to two others in River The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources captured two bighead carp May 11 during a search on the St. Croix River to recapture a tagged bighead carp they have been tracking as part of an invasive carp pilot project. The carp were captured in Anderson Bay on the St. Croix River. One was a 46-inch, 39-pound mature male, and the second was a 43-inch, 46-pound mature MN DNR female. They were removed from the water and euthanized, and further lab analyses will provide more detailed and useful information about the fish. “We may not have immediately captured these two if the tagged carp hadn’t, in effect, led us to them,” DNR invasive fish coordinator Nick Frohnauer said. “Tagging is another proactive step Minnesota is taking to prevent the spread of invasive species.” The capture of the two bighead carp, an invasive

“We’re very excited to be coming into Scandia,” Miller said. Miller said the group hopes to create a full-service pizza and bar business that takes advantage of some of the menu items the existing Brookside offers, but won’t directly compete with the Marine business. The group plans to feature their full menu of pizzas and Italian-style sandwiches, and also plans to do some small scale remodeling inside and add some arcade games
