Monument repair may be the most visible aspect of a restoration project in the works for Marine’s Oakland Cemetery this fall. But if the project goes as organizers hope, it won’t be the only outcome. Before a single stone is touched, those planning the project hope to spark interest and will invite the public to help document the stories of people buried there. The group hopes those initial sparks grow into a long-burning ethos of community stewardship toward the city-owned cemetery. The project pays homage to Gary Campbell, who spent his retirement repairing headstones in Washington County cemeteries. Campbell was raised in Marine and is buried in Oakland Cemetery. “He represents the kind of civic spirit of people

Withrow Ballroom celebrates grand re-opening The new owners of the Withrow Ballroom, Laura Miron and Annie Hlavka, held a ribbon cutting ceremony before the Rockin’ Hollywoods dance night on Saturday, April 21. Miron is cutting the ribbon, with Hlavka and her husband, Brandon, to the right. Holding the ribbon are May Town Board Chair Bill Voedisch on the left with wife Laurie Carlson, and Town Treasurer Cheryl Bennett on the right, with her husband Joe. To the rear of Annie is her father, Joe Jahnke. Miron and Hlavka are continuing the 90-year tradition of the facility, originally known as Zahler’s Ballroom, as a dance hall and event center in May Township.
Scandia DI team wins state competition Sets sights on international meet For the fourth time in 10 years, a Destination Imagination team from Scandia Elementary IB World School took first place at the state meet. This year’s meet was held on April 14 at Jackson Middle School in Coon Rapids. The Scandia team, called “The Scientific Seven,” comprised of students in grades four through six, took top honors in the middle school division. The win earned the team the right to compete at the global tournament in Knoxville, Tenn., from May 23 to 26. Coached by Emily Stegmeir, the team will be raising funds to support their trip. in Marine,” explained Charlie Anderson, one of the project’s organizers. “We wanted to tap into that and use it as a catalyst to call others in Marine to action, to say, ‘This is our shared sacred space and we need to take care of it.’” The project is bringing together organizations including the Marine Restoration Society, the City of Marine and its Urban Forest Task Force, Christ Lutheran Church, and River Grove Elementary School.
