The color of understanding

At Camp Lakamaga, traditions relived each summer BY SUZANNE LINDGREN EDITOR@COUNTRYMESSENGER.COM

Swimsuits, popsicle sticks and nature hikes: In a world that seems determined to change at an ever-increasing pace, the traditions of summer camp – that childhood rite of passage – remain comfortingly unaffected. Last year at camp, Olivia Majeski, then fresh out of kindergarten, went swimming, tested out an adventure course, tried archery and did art projects at Camp Lakamaga through a summer recreation program offered by the City of Scandia. “We went canoeing and swimming,” she reported of the halfday camps offered for her age SUBMITTED group last year. “And we got to Olivia Majeski at Camp Lakamaga last year. see nature.”

Majeski recalls crafting with popsicle sticks and yarn, and learning to paddle by making “ice cream scoop” shapes – which she did even though she doesn’t like ice cream. When her mother, Amy Majeski, asked Olivia if she wanted to go back to camp this summer, she replied with an enthusiastic, “Yes! And this year I get to go for longer.” As a graduating first grader, Majeski is now eligible for the full day camp experience. Several co-ed camp sessions accommodate different age groups and interests at Camp Lakamaga, which sits on the shore of Big Marine Lake and is owned and operated by the Girl SEE LAKAMAGA, PAGE 2

Save the date for Mill Stream Day Mill Stream Day is set for Sun., May 15, from noon to 4 p.m. in Burris Park (near the Village Center in Marine on St. Croix). Marine’s annual festival of spring in the St. Croix Valley is celebrated with live music by local artists, performances by traditional Morris dancers and a maypole ribbon dance. The menu features fresh brook trout, carefully cooked and layered with dill, lemon and butter. The popular trout lunch brings back aficionados year after year. Brats and side dishes are also available. The maypole ribbon-weaving dance is scheduled for 2 p.m. The event also features exhibits on etymology, fly tying and local history.

What would happen if a crayon had the wrong colored label? Faced with such a question, many would probably find a way to keep coloring. But for Michael Hall, a 22-year Marine resident who moved to Minneapolis three years ago, the question warranted a thorough investigation. It was a story waiting to be told. “It started like a lot of my books, with an idea,” said Hall, who has been writing and illustrating children’s books for about eight years. “Everything went from there, figuring out what kind of story it would be.” It became “Red: A Crayon’s Story,” the tale of a blue crayon in a red label no one can seem to see beyond. His strawberries and fire trucks are blue, no matter how hard he tries to get the hang of red. Eventually, with the help of a new friend, he begins to understand and accept that he has different talents. Hall’s book won the Minnesota Book Award for Children’s Literature this year. The story is one almost anyone can relate to, and that’s part of its broad appeal. “I’m dyslexic and I relate to it on that level,” said Hall. “People say things about the character, KAROL KOHORST SULLIVAN
