Hundreds comment on Log House Landing project BY KYLE WEAVER CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Few topics in Scandia’s first decade as a city have engendered so much public attention. As of Monday, the Scandia City Council has recieved more than five dozen oral statements, at least that many written comments, and two online petitions pertaining to the city’s ongoing debate over what to do about the Log House
Landing boat ramp on the St. Croix River. At last week’s public hearing, many of those voices were in the same room together. Commenters at the April 25 hearing were given three minutes each to state their preference for one of four project options: Option 1: Leave the ramp “as is.” Option 2: Improve the ramp for trailered boats. Marine sixth graders rehearse for this year's play. They've been working with professional dancer and former Marine student Lela Pierce on choreography for the opening number, "Circle of Life."
Sixth graders prepare ‘Lion King Jr.’ Final play for Marine Elementary BY SUZANNE LINDGREN EDITOR@COUNTRYMESSENGER.COM
The chatter of sixth graders at Marine Elementary subsides as former Marine student, now a professional dancer and visual artist, Lela Pierce addresses them during their final choreography session. “OK, does anyone have any questions before we begin?” she asks. Then, altering her gaze slightly, “You had a question about your entrance — you’re giraffes, right? You enter on ‘more to find than can ever be found.’”
In preparation for this year’s play, “The Lion King Jr.,” Pierce has been working with the students on choreography for the opening number, “Circle of Life.” In character as animals, the students variously crawl, shuffle and flap their way across the stage, finally raising their arms in praise and bowing deeply. They run through the song a few times, tweaking movements — the arc of an arm, the angle of a foot — between each full playthrough. Pierce, who played Snoopy in the 1998 sixth grade play, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” says working with the sixth graders has been “awesome.” “They’re enthusiastic,” she
explains. “And it’s been fun to think back to when I was their age, some of the silliness but also the beginnings of some insecurities as they’re about to enter middle school. … The sixth grade play is a big deal in town. It’s a coming of age process and it’s great that the town comes out and supports the kids as they enter into the next phase of middle school.” Sixth grade teacher Abby Brown, who has codirected many of the plays, says the lessons learned through the experience can be transformative for kids. “What we have for evidence
Date set for 20th Mill Stream Day BY SUZANNE LINDGREN EDITOR@COUNTRYMESSENGER.COM
“Citizens band to preserve Mill Stream” reads the front page of the Country Messenger almost exactly 20 years ago — May 7, 1997. The story, written by Carroll Davis-Johnson, explains how Marine residents Jim Shaver and Bob White had reached out to the Department of Natural Resources in an effort to protect the health of the stream. Then-DNR-project-coordinator Annette Drewes was elated by the citizen-led initiative, in light of a recent DNR study that had concluded waters of high SEE MILL STREAM DAY, PAGE 8
