City offers parks committee ‘proactive’ funding Council endorses School Forest initiative BY KYLE WEAVER CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Scandia’s Parks and Recreation Committee now has a budget. The Scandia City Council last week approved a budget transfer of $100,000 to the city’s Parks Improvement Fund. Previously only funded by park dedication fees collected after subdivisions

are created, the fund had been carrying roughly $20,000 of debt, created when the city pre-funded the parking lot improvements at Lilleskogen Park and the Scandia Veterans Memorial. Recently, though, the council has discussed giving the committee some funding to work with to stimulate more long-range parks planning. Councilman Steve Kronmiller formally proposed the transfer to allow the committee to be “more proactive and less reactive.” Kronmiller noted that the city had

carried over a $400,000 surplus from 2017 after a stellar year in collecting building permit fee revenue. The city is also contemplating the sale of a city-owned lot on Goose Lake. The lot is not viewed as viable for a possible park or public lake access. “In my mind, this allows the parks committee to plan,” City Administrator Neil Soltis said. Council members Chris Ness and Jim Schneider, though, felt the transfer SEE COUNCIL, PAGE 2

“We are excited about the One Stop Donation Drop and Blood Drive because it gives children, teens and adults an opportunity to work together to support the community,” said Sophia Nienaber, the Forest Lake-Scandia Leo Club’s Secretary. The Leo Club is a program for 12-18 year olds who help

Olivia Nienaber, the Leo Club’s Treasurer added, “Our service fair has lots of ways to help those locally, in Minnesota, and throughout the world.
