The U.S. State Department has selected a painting by St. Croix Valley artist Mary Jo Van Dell to be part of its Art in Embassies program. The large oil painting, "Approach," depicts an iron ore freighter sailing the waters of Lake Superior toward the port of Duluth. The painting will hang in Sri Lanka. "I am honored that this painting will be accessible to citizens of another country, especially because it represents such an iconic and historic part of Minnesota and the Great Lakes' region of our country,” said Van Dell. Attendees at the Marine Oscar Party fundraiser did it again, voting for what turned out to be the winning Oscar nominee in Short Documentary. Organizers of the Marine Community Library fundraiser showed the five nominees in Short Documentary Saturday, a day ahead of the Oscar Awards broadcast. Everyone in the room voted for their favorite, and “Period. End of Sentence.” won. The following day it was announced the official winner at the Oscars. This is the sixth consecutive year the audience attending the Marine event has picked the winner ahead of the awards ceremony.

Elim Lutheran Church Explores Possibility of 2019 Living Cemetery Tour CONTRIBUTED ELIM CEMETERY COMMITTEE

After a one-year hiatus of Elim Lutheran Church’s Living Cemetery Tour, the congregation is thinking about producing another tour in 2019. The cemetery tour features actors who perform stories about several “saints” who are buried in

the cemetery. For each tour, organizers take suggestions for interesting Scandia members to feature. Many “saints” are portrayed by family members. “It’s an interesting event that helps us understand people and events that shaped our community and church,” said Scott Walcker, chair of Elim’s cemetery committee. “In the past, this event has

been attended by hundreds each year and enjoyed by all.” There will be an Exploratory Planning Meeting March 10 at 10:45 a.m. in the small chapel (there will be signs on entrance doors directing visitors to the small chapel) to see if the group can enlist enough people to bring SEE ELIM, PAGE 2
