‘Alice in France’ makes shortlist for state book awards BY SUZANNE LINDGREN EDITOR@COUNTRYMESSENGER.COM

One hundred years ago this March, 26-year-old Alice O’Brien boarded a ship bound for France, and war, to volunteer with the American Fund for French Wounded and eventually the Red Cross. Without descendants to share her story, it might have been lost were it not for her grand-niece, author and historian Nancy O’Brien Wagner, who compiled and edited O’Brien’s letters in “Alice in France: The World War I Letters of Alice M. O’Brien.” The book has been selected as a finalist for this year’s Minnesota Book Awards. For a different reason, O’Brien’s legacy remains tangible in the Marine area. Decades after the war had ended, she donated 180 acres of riverfront property to Minnesota in honor of her father, a lumber baron and landowner. Since that 1947 donation, William O’Brien State Park has grown to 1,653 acres, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. O’Brien is the namesake of the park’s Lake Alice. The Friends of the St. Paul Public Library announced book awards finalists Jan. 27. “Alice in France,” published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press, made the General Nonfiction category. Winners will be named at the 30th Annual Minnesota Book Awards Ceremony on Sat., April 21, at the InterContinental Hotel Saint Paul Riverfront. For more information or to purchase a ticket to the awards ceremony, visit www.thefriends.org/mnba or call 651-222-3242.

In a press release announcing her campaign, Mozey outlined a platform to increase the minimum wage, work for single-payer health care, and create jobs in the renewable energy industry while promoting environmental conservation. She also vowed
