National Park Service to conduct brush burns The St. Croix National Scenic Riverway plans to burn numerous brush piles in the riverway corridor in January and February of 2018.

These burns may take place January 31 - February 17, depending on weather conditions.

The National Park Service (NPS) is conducting these burns to improve prairie and savanna habitat along the St. Croix and Namekagon rivers.

The areas where piles are to be burned are: • Arcola: this site has seven piles and is in Washington County, four miles north of Stillwater, Minnesota. The site is being restored to native prairie and oak savanna.

• Rice Lake Flats: located northwest of Somerset, Wisconsin in St. Croix County, this site has approximately 40 piles. The area will be restored to oak savanna and native prairie.

• Springbrook Savanna: this site, along the Namekagon River, has approximately ten piles.

It is located about one quarter mile northeast of Springbrook, Wisconsin, in Washburn County.

School district seeks input on economic challenges Forest Lake Area Schools is sponsoring Community Conversations to seek input from the public on ways to address its current economic challenges. There will be six Community Conversations throughout the district. All members of the community, including parents, students, staff and members of the general public are welcome to attend these events. Participation could include asking questions, expressing ideas or concerns, and learning more about

how the school district’s financial system works.

Snow on ground for Ski MO

After some 10 inches of snow fell last Monday then started to melt later in the week, enough stayed on the ground to suit participants in the annual Marine O'Brien Ski Race at William O'Brien State Park on Sunday, Jan. 28.

According to result listings on Skinny Ski, Tyler Radtke (age 20, Minneapolis) took first place for men in the 25K freestyle and Marit Sonnesyn (age 24, Minneapolis) won the women’s title.

Henry Wortman (age 19, St. Paul) and Sara Zimmerman-White (age 48, Roseville) led the 25K classical race.

Voters will weigh in on gubernatorial candidates Feb. 6

Minnesotans will have chance to vote for the candidate they’d like their political party to support for governor during Minnesota’s precinct caucuses, Tues., Feb. 6, at 7 p.m.

Voters can find their caucus location through the Secretary of State’s Precinct Caucus Finder: http://caucusfinder.sos. state.mn.us (see sidebar for a list of local caucus locations).

Run by the state’s political parties, the caucuses mark the start of the candidate endorsement process. Delegates and district leadership are also selected at

caucuses, according to Secretary of State Steve Simon, and goals and platforms may be set. “I encourage all Minnesotans to go out and caucus on Feb. 6 and make their voices heard,� Secretary Simon said in a Jan. 17 press release. “Minnesota has a proud tradition of civic engagement and going to a caucus is a great way for Minnesotans to show support for their preferred candidates, raise an important issue, and meet people in their community. This is an important and historic election year in Minnesota and every voice matters.�

May Town Board works to bring violators into compliance Three residents of May Township have appeared at board of supervisors meetings to address concerns about the occurrence of violations on Panorama Avenue.

At the December meeting, board members proposed an off-line meeting among the residents, board and town attorney. At the January meeting, these three residents appeared again to ask the board for assistance in working with the Washington County Sheriff’s office for enforcement.

One resident explained that he had called Washington County to report a concern about a potential violation on Panorama Avenue.

The responding officer spent time talk about their concerns, but stated that they were unwilling or unable to invest any further time into the situation.

The board chose to move forward with the initial proposal for an off-line meeting among residents, board members and the town attorney. Supervisor John Pazlar asked for a little more background on the sheriff’s reticence to work on behalf of the township. Town Attorney Dave Snyder will contact the sheriff’s

planted following pile burning.

The NPS has developed detailed plans for pile burning and the fires are carried out by trained and certified personnel. The plans address temperature, relative humidity, wind, and other conditions under which a burn can take place, protection of adjacent properties, communications, needed manpower and equipment, safety, and other considerations.

The piles will be burned with snow on the ground. If snow or other conditions are not favorable on the day when burning is planned or while piles are still hot, the burn will be rescheduled or piles may be extinguished.

Duplex, subdivision violations Another item on the agenda was a motion by Board Chair Voedisch to approve Resolution 201801 and ordering corrective action, citing violations of a town code on Keller Avenue. The violation involved property operating as a duplex. The board has informed the property owner that he is required to bring the property into compliance by September 30.

The board also discussed plans to address a failure to record a subdivision. Town Attorney Dave Snyder advised the board that the individual should be notified of the violation, including specifications on the size of a building in violation and the lack of follow through on the subdivision requirements. The notification should also offer the landowner an opportunity to be heard at a subsequent town board meeting.

The board asked planner Nate Sparks to send a letter to this effect for discussion at the next meeting.

Carnelian Creek Access from 155th Street Culvert

Supervisors received recommendation to pass an ordinance that would restrict access to certain waterways from the public right of way. The recommendation, based on research conducted by the watershed district’s attorney, would include restricting access to Carnelian from 155th Street Culvert. Town Attorney Snyder suggested holding a public hearing to discuss the restricted access decision, which was held January 18.

Friday, Jan. 12, River Grove Elementary students wrapped up the first semester for students. The date also marked the close of the open enrollment period for next school year.

Jan. 19, the board held a lottery drawing from applications received, determining placement in class and on waiting lists. However, pre-enrollment applications are still being accepted.

Students will be placed in a class or on a waiting list in the order applications are received.

Kindergarten offers of enrollment are scheduled to begin in late January. First through sixth grade offers of enrollment will be made from late March and

2018 - 2019 School Calendar MACS board members have proposed a draft for the 2018 -2019 school calendar. Items on the calendar include: first and last day of school, early dismissals, New Teacher Day, Student Contact Day, and no school for teacher inservice, conferences and grading days. The proposal consists of 169 school days and 187 teacher contract days.

River Grove Rockhounds As part of their mission and site based learning model, River Grove students get to enjoy the forest campus

by getting outside in all weather. Beginning Thursday, January 25, third through sixth grade students are digging into the world of geology. Each week River Grove students will have the chance to explore their interest in rocks, volcanoes, earthquakes, crystals and fossils. Students will experience a new, hands-on topic, participate in experiments and begin to create their own rock collection.

Topics include: caves, crystals, mineral structures, fluorescence and geology in space.

Move to the Beat Dance Crew The Move to the Beat Dance Crew will give third through sixth grade students the opportunity to learn

stretches, warm-ups and several choreographed pieces from several styles of dance such as hip hop, jazz, musical theater and modern dance. Students will also create their own pieces.

Those returning for the spring session will work towards putting on a dance recital at the end of the year.

Other events for students include continuing their work with artist in residence Karron Nottingham, the Winter Warm-Up Challenge and field trips to places like Warner Nature Center and Asfolk Viking School.

Meet Mr. William O’Brien William O’Brien was one of Minnesota’s most successful businessmen during the heyday of logging in Minnesota and the St. Croix Valley during the 1890s. He owned and operated logging camps, saw mills, even trains to move timber from Minnesota’s remote forests to build cities throughout the United States. His businesses survived despite the damages and losses caused by the Great Hinckley Fire of 1894. On Saturday, Feb. 3, at 3 p.m. local storyteller Dwight Wilcox will present an afternoon program as Mr. William O’Brien, explaining how William O’Brien State Park was started through generous donations of the O’Brien family and relating the harrowing events of the 1984 Hinckley Fire. We will meet around the fire at the Visitor Center.

Candlelight Walk Along the St. Croix River William O’Brien State Park will host a special candlelight walk along the beautiful St. Croix River on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Start at the Visitor Center, then follow the flickering lights as they lead you down the hill, and then along Lake Alice and the St. Croix River. Look for stars and listen for owls as you walk along this packed 2.5 mile trail. When you make it back up the hill, hot apple cider, and marshmallows for roasting awaits you at the Visitor Center. Everything old is new again

J

anuary is coming to a close. The days are getting longer, the winter sports seasons are coming to a close and if you breathe very deeply, you can almost smell a hint of spring.

Yes, we are on the down side of winter and hopefully we won’t get clobbered for just mentioning spring.

January is the start of the second season for network television.

The shows that were launched in the fall that failed to catch on with viewers have been given the axe and the mid season replacements have been launched.

With the ever expanding ways viewers have to watch television, competition for viewers and adPublisher the vertising dollars has become more heated. Network television execuTom Stangl tives, looking to hedge their bets on new series, have looked to the past for what they feel are safe bets for the future.

Now called “reboots” instead of “remakes,” network executives are taking shows from 30 and 40 years ago, changing a few items and hoping that old and new viewers will tune in.

Last week CBS announced reboots of the 1980s hits “Magnum P.I.,” “Cagney and Lacey” as well as a revival of “Murphy Brown.” ABC has ordered a pilot for “The Greatest American Hero,” with an Indian American woman as the lead.

ABC will air episodes of “Rosanne” in March with the original cast involved. NBC brought back the comedy “Will and Grace” this year and FOX is currently airing the second season of a revival of “The X Files.”

Everything old is indeed new again.

Buoyed by the success of some revivals, it is natural for networks to return to shows that were hits in the glory days of the 1970s and 1980s before cable television and the internet.

“Magnum P.I.” aired on CBS for eight years and starred Tom Selleck as the as ex-Navy Seal working as a private investigator in Hawaii. Selleck became a star as the easy going flatshoe. “Cagney and Lacey” starred Tyne Daley and Sharon Gless as New York City detectives.

The reboots will be updated with Magnum as a returning Afghan war vet and Cagney and Lacey being set in Los Angeles instead of New York. No word if the original stars will be involved in the new productions.

The lure of familiar success has a strong appeal for entertainment companies. It is not a new phenomenon. When sound became the norm in Hollywood, silent movies of the past quickly become fodder for remakes. When color became the standard, old black and white epics were remade.

Hollywood favorites were translated to the small screen as televisions began popping up in households across the nation.

It’s all cyclical.

Sometimes it works. When the 1978 ABC series “Battlestar Galactica” was rebooted in 2005, the new show changed a few items and remains a cult classic nearly 10 years after the last episode aired.

CBS has enjoyed success with “Hawaii 5-0” and hopes that these new “old” shows will prove popular with viewers.

I think I’m skeptical of these reboots because I was around for the originals. It’s OK to update and redo stories, but I think that sometimes it’s best to leave the past in the past.

But I’m not a network programmer.

I wonder if they will keep the “Magnum P.I.” theme…

I’m dreaming of a whitefish Christmas

T

he temperature was 40 when we went to sleep but only 7 degrees and very windy when we awoke to go ice fishing. Normally I would have slept in on such a morning but not on the last day of our trip for Lake Michigan whitefish off Sturgeon Bay. We were waiting at the launch when our guides arrived exactly at 8 a.m..

Leaving our warm car, hopping into a warm Polaris Ranger, we rode 3 miles before hopping into a warm ice shack. We had learned that perfection was the standard from Bret Alexander Sport Fishing, our guide service for that weekend.

It was the same shack where my brother Dick Bennett of Hudson, Wild River Jon McCorkle of North Branch and I caught our limit of 30 whitefish Trails yesterday. Jon, the Fish Whisperer got the first couple of fish again and Jim Bennett Dick followed suit as I struggled in the beginning like yesterday, but struggles are part of life. The first struggle was the storm and cold front. Another when Dick grabbed his morning coffee from the microwave not realizing that the handmade cup was going to be as hot as the boiling water inside it. The burns doubled the size of his index finger and the top half of his thumb with water blisters. It was no wonder he lost that special feeling you need to detect imperceptible bites for cold front whitefish.

The other strike literally hit while driving through Green Bay. I was behind the wheel rocketing 70 mph down I-43 South to get to the turn off that would take

us up to Door County Peninsula. I spotted a State Trooper with lights flashing so I began to switch lanes to give the officer room. A slower moving van in front of me caused me to pull around it and when I did I had a big surprise.

There was a full Christmas tree right in front of no time and me to react. Pine needles flew in every direction and we heard the tree dragging under the car. Hitting the brakes I headed for the concrete center medium and stopped barely off the road. Crawling under the car I spotted the tree trunk, reached under as far as possible and gave it a jerk. The trunk snapped and there I was with half a Christmas tree in my hand. I sat it on the medium, jumped back in the car and away we went. Luckily the car sounded good so we kept going, knowing the other half of the tree jammed in the undercarriage wasn’t going to go anywhere unless we could find a hungry beaver to gnaw it out.

Fishing picked up as the morning passed and again we got our limit of 30 fish. Back at the landing Jon peeked under his car and saw all kinds of pine branches in the grill as well as needles covering the back window of his van. When he got home he took his car in for an oil change and a quick check-up.

There was lots of talk about the Christmas tree and some corn stalks jammed among the pine branches.

Sorry, Jon, you get corn stalks when you go goose hunting with me, but I didn’t expect Christmas tree fishing for whitefish.

ast week writing about grilled cheese sandwiches got me thinking about all the good things that go with cheese. I shared my dad loved lavosh crackers with Havarti cheese.

Cheese is the highlight, but what you serve it with can make the cheese even better.

What I mean, is if you have a great cheese and, say, put it on saltine crackers, the cracker doesn’t improve the cheese.

I could argue that many cheeses are like great wines. A good wine can make whatever you are eating better.

Wild Chow taste Many cheeses are great alone.

They don’t need anything else, Lisa Erickson but when you pair cheese with the right cracker or bread, it will taste even better. Cheeses that are mild and delicate could be paired with a light and airy cracker such as Havarti. When you have a strong sharp cheddar, paring it with a more flavorful cracker will make the nuances in the cheese stand out.

I love these homemade crackers. If you’ve never had a warm fresh from the oven cracker, you’ve been missing out! They are amazing.

Annabel’s Lavosh Crackers Adapted from Anabel Langbein 1 cup flour 1 cup whole wheat flour 2 tbsp. each black and white sesame seeds or 4 tbsp. of either 1 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp salt ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tsp sesame oil ½ cup water Avocado oil or olive oil Sea salt Preheat oven to 325 degrees and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flours, sesame seeds, oregano and salt. Mix the oils and water together and add to the dry ingredients, stirring to form a soft, pliable dough.

Divide the dough into 4 pieces and roll each out on a lightly floured board as thinly as possible.

Each piece of dough should yield a 12 x 6 inch rectangle. Cut each rectangle into strips measuring about 2 x 6 and roll again. They need to be almost see-through—as thin as you can handle.

Carefully transfer strips to a baking tray, brush lightly with oil and sprinkle with salt. Bake until crisp and lightly golden, about 15-18 minutes.

Crackers can be stored in an airtight container for about one week. To freshen up, heat oven to 325 and re-bake about 5 minutes.

Ballot count takes center stage in Valley

In Lennox Valley, election nights were generally drab affairs, with tight results a rarity.

Usually, the good folks of the Valley booted the old mayor out with the same lackluster fanfare used to welcome the new leader into office.

However, 1998 was no ordinary year, and like so many other things, the mayoral election didn’t go according to script. If it wasn’t enough the Valley was split between a fairly respected incumbent and the town celebrity, Juliet Stoughton’s last-minute entree into the campaign created enough drama for two episodes of “Murder, She Wrote.”

Heated debates made their way to dinner tables. Wives slept separately from husbands, pastors ignored the campaign for fear of controversy, and there was a general uneasiness which didn’t befit the small-town friendliness for which our small town was known.

Traditionally, a handful of Valley residents were on hand to witness the counting of ballots at the Town Hall. Our Town Hall wasn’t like the palatial governmental buildings in larger cities.

It included a small reception room with four seats rarely used, the mayor’s office, the office of the chief of police and Assembly Hall, where Valley Council meetings were held each month.

Tightly packed, the room might have accommodated 100 people.

It hadn’t dawned on anyone that most Valley residents would show up to see the ballots counted.

Polls closed at 7 p.m., and the ballot box from each precinct was carefully delivered to the Town Hall under the watchful eye of the precinct election coordinator and two Valley Council members. As the coordinators approached the building, you’d have thought they were carrying precious jewels as the crowd silenced in awe.

Once the boxes were safely inside the building, Chief of Police Buford Dibble appeared in front of the entrance with his bullhorn.

“Citizens of Lennox Valley,” he began. “In an attempt to maintain control during the ballot count, we will allow only 100 persons into Town Hall to view the proceedings.”

“Who decides who gets in?” barked Marvin Walsh, local egg farmer and Raymond Cooper supporter.

Chief Dibble continued, “Each adult will be given a piece of paper with a number on it. We will call out numbers until we have reached the limit of 100 in the room.”

“Does that include the people counting the ballots?” shouted Elbert Lee Jones.

A hushed conversation took place between Dibble and the Valley election coordinator, Vera Pinrod.

The chief continued, “100 persons will be admitted to watch the proceedings. This is in addition to the election coordinator, the precinct coordinators and

myself.”

“What about the press?” asked Iris Long from the back of the crowd.

After an even longer discussion between the chief and Vera, Dibble blared over the bullhorn, “The 100 persons admitted are in addition to the election coordinator, the precinct coordinators, the three candidates, members of the press and myself.” Then after a pause, “Persons not of voting age will not be admitted.”

Folks squealed like lottery winners as their numbers were called. Marvin Walsh was in.

Rhonda Goodman was not.

Billy Joe Prather, pastor of First Baptist Church, was in. Father O’Reilly was not.

On a riser at the front of the room, a large whiteboard with the names Bland, Cooper and Stoughton across the top secured everyone’s attention. A fourth column with the word, “Other,” fit along the right edge.

Tallies would be recorded by hand with a large black marker.

“Cooper!” shouted Vera.

A tally was marked on the board under Raymond’s name.

“Cooper!” Vera shouted again.

Iris Long made a mental note of the count while shooting pictures with her 20-year old Nikon.

“This is going to be a very long night,” thought Iris.

Bold North? I’ll be staying in.

ver heard of “Frozen?” It’s a Disney musical.

If you’ve been anticipating this year’s Super Bowl and the associated frenzy that is the Twin Cities Bold North celebration, you probably already know that Broadway star Idina Menzel sang “Let it Go” (the hit from the Disney movie) last Friday in Minneapolis.

There’s no doubt about it. The woman can sing. Menzel — whose Broadway chops include starring roles in “Rent” and “Wicked” — played the voice of Queen Elsa in “Frozen.” She was a fitting pick to launch the festivities.

The closest I came to an encounter with Queen Elsa over the weekend, however, was at my niece’s third Editor birthday party. Balloons were Suzanne Lindgren adorned with ice queen Elsa, her sister Anna, and Olaf, the cheerful, bumbling snowman.

The cake was also decorated with Elsa’s likeness. I got the piece with her right hand and forearm on it, which will have to suffice as my “Frozen” fix for the Super Bowl season.

Lest you call me a homebody, know that I tried to celebrate the Minnesota winter outdoors at Scandia’s Vinterfest on Saturday. I’m still wondering why. Objectively speaking, the young festival is getting better every year. But for me, this year’s trip was akin to disaster.

I went in the late morning with Strummer, hoping to snap a few photos of Lions serving pancakes and kids building snow sculptures. This plan hinged on Strummer sitting contentedly in his stroller or tooling around near me, with the option of napping if he wished.

It was a flawed plan.

Fast forward to me and a screaming child in the bathroom, minutes ticking by as breakfast wraps up and sculptors complete their works of snow art outside.

I should have predicted the total meltdown that started en route and continued across the parking lot as I carried what might as well have been a 30-pound alarm system into the community center.

The wailing kept on until I’d taken off his hat, coat

and boots, desperately trying to discover what had set him off. And then, suddenly, he fell asleep in my arms.

Somehow, I got all the winter gear back on without waking him up and managed to snap a few photos before we took off for home. Disaster not averted, but contained. We returned to the festival in the early evening to eat chili and watch a little hockey.

All was well.

most populous municipality, and two members of the county board selected by the board from its members who are not candidates in the election. Any member of the canvassing board may appoint a designee to appear at the meeting of the board, except that no designee may be a candidate for public office. Three members constitute a quorum.

Guided morning bird hikes on tap in Washington County Parks in 2018 A rotating schedule of bird hikes throughout Washington County Parks will continue with a hike 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Lake Elmo Park Reserve.

Learn to identify the birds that call the St. Croix Valley home and contribute to citizen science data collection by completing bird count surveys with the guide.

The surveys collected will assist the county’s Natural Resources team and related work in conjunction with the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Fund grant.

It is a one-hour guided hike. Meet at the Nordic Center Foyer, with parking at the Nordic Trailhead Lot. The hikes continue: • March 10, Big Marine Park Reserve, meet at the playground; • April 7, St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park, meet at the Hilltop Pavilion; • May 26, Pine Point Park, meet at the Trailhead kiosk; • June 2, Explore Your Parks Day, Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park, meet at the playground;

The Washington County Historical Society has depended upon its membership ever since it organized back in 1934. There was a drive to organize a county historical society as far back as 1881, but because of indifference and lack of support the idea died and it took 53 years to resurface.

Those people who gathered at the Stillwater Public Library in 1934 from all over the county were tired of seeing the history of one of Minnesota's first counties fading away.

Historical Society purchased from the State of Minnesota the old Warden's House of the Stillwater Prison.

In June 1941, the Historical Society opened that house as a museum, the second house museum open to the public in the state.

of the one room school in Washington County. The pioneer log house of the Johannes Erickson family was also refurbished on the site to serve as an example of early days in the Scandia area. All three museum buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.

In the reconstructed Carriage House, behind the Warden’s House Museum, the Washington County Historical Society has a research library for people who want to find out about their ancestors. This includes many photographs, manuscripts, and books that cover Washington County history from the beginning to present day. The society has invested in providing a temperature- and humidity-controlled environment for storing valuable artifacts.

Today the Society does so much more! Staff and volunteers reach out to the county schools to bring county history to the classroom. The Historical Society writes and publishes books about county history, keeps an informative history web site (www. wchsmn.org), sponsors a vintage baseball team (look for them in your hometown next summer), and develops history displays, lectures and workshops at many locations around the county.

Recent donations of hundreds of photos from the Forest Lake area, the operation of two National Register of Historic Places museums in Scandia, and

many stories of individuals from the county make up so many of the fabulous stories of Washington county!

Membership is one way that you can help support the Washington County Historical Society. With a membership in this organization you will be able to visit the museums for free, and be able to research in the library without paying a research fee. You will receive a quarterly newsletter filled with information about upcoming programs and informational articles about some aspect of Washington County history. Each year the Society holds two membership meetings with excellent speakers on a variety of historical subjects. A member of the historical society also receives 10 percent off any of the books and other items for sale in our gift shop, which has the best selection of local histories in the county.
