Marine takes a green step, honors a citizen

From ‘alone’ to ‘all one’ Marine woman wins Minnesota Book Artist award BY SUZANNE LINDGREN EDITOR@COUNTRYMESSENGER.COM

Mystical. That’s one word writer and artist Wendy Fernstrum uses to describe her book, “One is the Holiest Number (#2),” which earned her the title of Minnesota Book Artist for 2016. “In the book, I’m playing around with logic and rational thought,” said Fernstrum of the work. “First of all, it’s called “One is the Holiest Number,” but it’s

number two. I’m kind of messing around, but it’s a mystical book and it shakes up the rational mind.” The book – artfully hand printed and pressed, then meticulously bound to incorporate pages that overlap for wordplay – explores different cultural notions of “one” and the chasm between them, belied by language. In the book, “alone” becomes “all one,” “hole” becomes “whole” and “atone,” “at one.” “Sometimes we feel we’re all alone, completely isolated,” Fernstrum explains. “And at the other end of the spectrum, we can feel

like we’re one with everything and everyone. “I’m really interested in how that shift can happen in an instant, or not. And what does it mean to be one with all? … I felt like it was a universal book, so I dedicated it, ‘To those who have lost a loved one. Which pretty much includes all of us.’ It felt like that’s the spirit of the one. This is everyone’s book.” The genre of artist books allows Fernstrum to explore such concepts playfully, but with reverence. “I find (artist books) appealing because I’m SEE ARTIST, PAGE 2

Marine’s GreenStep efforts were recognized last Thursday at the January city council meeting when Diana McKeowan, Metro CERT (Clean Energy Resource Team) director, presented an award for becoming a Step One GreenStep City. There are now 91 GreenStep cities in Minnesota. “We are expecting to surpass 100 before the League of Minnesota Cities conference this summer in June,” McKeowan said. Though Marine just completed step one, it is only one “Best Practice” away from being a Step Two city and McKeowan expects to be back this time next year to present another award. “It’s very exciting,” she said. “I know you’re a small city, and the program includes lots of cities small and large, rural and urban, and so we’re really happy to have Marine on the program.”

Citizen of the Year Diane Mills was voted Citizen of the Year for her work as the EMS Deputy Chief, her help with the art fair and her support as treasurer of the relief association. "That’s quite a bit of work that she’s done for the past six years,” said council member Lon Pardun. Nancy Cosgriff and Tony Poletes were also nominated for Citizen of the Year. The next regular meeting of the Marine City Council will be held February 11.

Oldest ski race in the Midwest offers Nordic races for all ages

Skiers of all abilities are invited to the beautiful St. Croix River valley to participate in the 45th annual Marine O’Brien Cross Country Ski Race on Sun., Jan. 24, 2016. Called “Ski MO,” the event will be held at William O’Brien State Park north of Marine on St. Croix. All proceeds from the race benefit the St. Croix Valley Ski Club youth skiing program. “We’re excited to celebrate our 45th year partnering with William O’Brien State Park to benefit our youth ski programs,” said Katie Brekke, Ski MO race coordinator. “It’s a great activity for the entire family, and we invite local residents to cheer on their friends and neighbors and make some noise for the finishers.” There are three adult races of

varying distances and children’s races through age 13. Honoring the history of the race, organizers are also hosting a wooden ski race. “Dust off those wood skis, oil up your leather boots and pull the moth balls out of your wool knickers and socks,” added Brekke. “The wooden tour is always a fun

sight to see, honoring Marine’s skiing heritage, and we love to see participants dress the part.” For more information on the race, visit Zap Event online, or check out the details below.

Registration Participants can register online through Jan. 21. Day-of registra-

tion and packet pickup opens at 9 a.m. and will close 30 minutes prior to race start. The first 100 registrants for the 25 km and 12.5 km races will receive a custom Ski MO race hat.
