The League of American Bicyclists last month named Minnesota the nation’s second most bicycle friendly state. That’s good news for Cycling Scandia, a local group working to put Scandia on the map as a bicycling destina-

tion.

The group’s founders, Janie O’Connor and Marlys Johnson, have gathered a team devoted to increasing Scandia’s cyclist appeal. Smaller goals include helping to raise money for amenities such as bathrooms and a bike fix-it station.

That the state has made biking

Short-term rentals enabled by online platforms such as Airbnb will not be allowed in May Township, the town’s board of supervisors decided November 2.

Due to the popularity of vacation rental websites such as Airbnb and VRBO, the Town of May Board of Supervisors has been considering how to manage short-term rentals since June. At issue was growing concern from residents about how such properties would be regulated and local rules enforced.

The board requested that Nate Sparks, who works as a planning consultant for the town, examine the existing ordinance and possibly frame an ordinance more specific to the definition of short-term rental.

At the August meeting, Sparks explained that Washington County operates under an ordinance that corresponds with resort

standards and state licensing requirements, in which the common standard for short-term rentals is 30 days or less.

After review, the Board of Supervisors made their final decision at the November meeting, determining that short-term rentals are not allowed.

Voters in the Forest Lake school district have rejected two referendum questions that would have increased taxpayer funding across the district, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State’s office.

tion of the city’s 2018 budget.

The Scandia City Council approved the increases in order to get ahead of roughly $1.2 million in repairs and upgrades the two systems are going to need within the next seven years.

The two systems serve 110 homes on either side of Big Marine Lake—the Bliss and Anderson-Erickson neighborhoods—and are entirely maintained and supported by user fees.

In order to comply with a Minnesota Pollution Control Agency standard, the Bliss system will have to begin treating its wastewater for nitrates by 2025. That means the city will either have to pump the sewage into the MPCA system, which could mean connecting to the sewer line along Highway 61 south of Forest Lake, or purchasing land somewhere to replace the existing drainfield. Either option might cost as much as $1 million.

The Anderson-Erickson system will need to replace several lift pumps and to expand its drainfield by 2022, a likely $200,000 cost.

According to a council memo, the fee hikes will generate a reserve of about $100,000 by 2022, when the Anderson-Erickson improvements will be needed.

During a Nov. 1 meeting, the city council noted that even with the proposed increases, the systems may have to take on debt to finance the improvements. “Tonight, this is about the best we can do,� said council member Jim Schneider, who chairs the city’s Wastewater Advisory Committee.

The sewer budget also established a fee for holding tank pumping and drastically increases the fee for any new connections to the system, from $4,250 to $8,000. “I don’t have a problem with (the new connection fees), because we have a lot of expansion to plan for,� council member Steve Kronmiller said.

Does that matter in Scandia? “I think it does,� said O’Connor. “Especially since people are looking for beautiful scenery, safe roads and fewer cars.�

In early July, Cycling Scandia surveyed 62 cyclists riding through Scandia, and found that they enjoyed the scenic beauty of the river valley and liked wide shoulders and the back roads.�

The riders came from many different places, as far as Shorewood and Coon Rapids and as near as Scandia itself. “I think that we are a microcosm of what’s probably happening on a larger scale,� said O’Connor. “Wanting to be away from the busy life of the inner city, for the scenery, the exercise and the camaraderie of biking with a friend or a club.�

The city will hold its annual budget hearing on Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m.

With Your Family?

Thanksgiving is almost here. Ideally, this day should be about more than football and the imminent arrival of Black Friday mega-sales.

After all, the spirit of the holiday invites us to be grateful for what we have and for the presence of our loved ones.

But it’s important to look beyond just one day in November if you want your family to take part in your “abundance.â€? If you want to ensure your Âżnancial resources eventually are shared in the way you envision, you will need to follow a detailed action plan, including these steps: • Identify your assets. If you haven’t done so already, it’s a good idea to take an inventory of all your Âżnancial assets – your retirement accounts (401(k) and IRA), other investments, life insurance, real estate, collectibles and other items. Once you know exactly what you have, you can determine how you would like these assets distributed among your loved ones. • Get professional help. To ensure your assets go to the right people, you will need to create some legal documents, such as a will and a living trust. The depth and complexity of these instruments will depend a great deal on your individual circumstances, but in any case, you certainly will need to consult with a legal professional because estate planning is not a “do-it-yourselfâ€? endeavor. You may also need to work with a tax professional and your Âżnancial advisor, as taxes and investments are key components of the legacy you hope to leave. • Protect your financial independence. If your own financial resources were to become endangered, you clearly would have less to share with your loved ones, and if your Âżnancial independence were jeopardized, the result might be even worse – your adult children might be forced to use their own resources to help support you.

Consequently, you will need to protect yourself, and your ¿nancial assets, in several ways. For one thing, you may want to work with your legal professional to create a power of attorney, which would enable someone – possibly a grown child – to make ¿nancial decisions for you, should you become incapacitated. Also, you may want to guard yourself against the devastating costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. Medicare typically pays very little of these expenses, but a ¿nancial advisor may be able to suggest techniques or products that can help. • Communicate your wishes. Once you have all your plans in place, you’ll want to communicate them to your loved ones. By doing so, you’ll be sparing your loved ones from unpleasant surprises when it’s time to settle your estate. And, second, by making your plans and wishes known to your family well in advance of when any action needs to be taken, you’ll prepare your loved ones for the roles you wish them to assume, such as taking on power of attorney, serving as executor of your estate, and so on. And you’ll also want to make sure your family is acquainted with the legal, tax and ¿nancial professionals you’ve chosen to help you with your estate plans.

Thanksgiving comes just once a year. Taking the steps described here can help ensure your family will share in your Âżnancial abundance as you intended.

For now at least, Cycling Scandia’s focus is on serious cyclists who bike on roadsides, because that’s the demographic the group has observed pass through. “That’s what we have right now and we’re trying to meet the needs of the people we’re seeing now,� Johnson explained. “Serious bikers would rather be on a road than a trail,� said O’Connor. “If they’re going 20 or 25 miles an hour, it’s hazardous to come across a slow-moving rider on the trail,� said Johnson.

Trails are more appealing to families and casual bikers, noted O’Connor. “We’re not working on any property development that might become a trail,� O’Connor said. “But in the future, we don’t know. We’re seeing how the bicyclists can help move us in the direction they want.�

Plans are in the works

to extend the Gateway Trail to Scandia. “When the Gateway does come Scandia will be an endpoint for awhile,� said Johnson. “The demand may push us that way,� said O’Connor, “but first we have to get them here to see.�

Meanwhile, Cycling Scandia is cultivating connections within and outside the community

to encourage cycling in Scandia.

Whatever the group’s focus, if Minnesota legislators and the DOT heed the bicycle league’s suggestions to create long-term state funding programs for safety and increasing access to bicycle networks, Cycling Scandia could benefit from the momentum.

within a large cell area with high coverage needs or within large geographic areas with poor cell coverage. Small cell towers are defined as a maximum height of 50 feet with an additional 10 feet for antennas.

Because of the recent changes in the state law and the specific requirements for deployment of small wireless facilities that do not apply to other telecommunications right-of-way users, it is recommended that cities work with their city attorneys to review and update their ordi-

nances.

Planner Sparks is working to further examine regulation of small cell towers through local and existing ordinances. The discussion will continue at the December meeting.

E

very now and then, I am struck by the love/ hate relationship that exists with all media, even newspapers as small as this one.

In an era of partisan and divisive opinions masquerading as “news,” it has become increasingly difficult to know who to trust. The continuous flow of information online and with more people living their lives inside their own social media “bubble,” the problem becomes even more pronounced.

So, who can you trust?

I’d like to make a case for your hometown paper.

We are members of the National Newspaper Association (NNA), a trade organization that helps keep us up to date on legislation and provides the amplification of a group voice when it comes to dealing with as well as Washington.

Publisher vendors The NNA recently conducted a national readership survey, and Tom Stangl the results are eye-opening.

Over half of the respondents who read their community newspaper, 54 percent, said they trust their newspaper more than any other news source. An overwhelming majority, 76 percent, said their community newspaper really understands things that are important to them.

When it comes to knowing what’s happening locally, the community newspaper is the primary source, according to the survey respondents. The community newspaper beats TV, radio and internet as the number one source for local news as well as local shopping and advertising information.

Fifty-six percent of the respondents said they read a print newspaper that covers their community specifically. Four percent read their local paper online only, and 7 percent read it online and in print, bringing the total to 67 percent who read a local paper.

Nearly a third of respondents, 30 percent, have been reading their local newspaper for more than 30 years. The survey highlights the loyalty readers have for their local newspapers. Another 18 percent have been reading their hometown paper for over 20 years but less than 30.

The loyalty that has been built is based on results, relevancy and trust. Eighty-four percent said they read their local paper for local news, information and obituaries.

And when people like something, they want others to know. Sharing of newspapers is still extremely popular. Over eight out of 10 readers of a community paper share it with one or more people.

Nearly half, 46 percent, share their newspaper with at least one other person. But the sharing doesn’t stop there. Twelve percent share it with at least two people, 10 percent share it with three people, 6 percent share it with at least four people and 8 percent share it with five or more people.

Survey respondents expressed a great interest in their local communities. More than half, 61 percent, read their local paper for school news somewhat often to very often. Forty-six percent read it for local sports somewhat often to very often. And 60 percent read their local paper for the editorials or letters to the editor somewhat often to very often.

It has become fashionable to downplay the importance of the local newspaper, or to believe that it is no longer relevant.

Nothing could be farther from the truth.

The rut is on

W

e had just left Burkhardt heading west toward Willow River State Park when all of a sudden a doe appeared in the road right in front of us. Her mouth was hanging open, her tongue dangling out of her mouth and she looked ragged, sweaty and tired. There were no cars coming in the 45 MPH speed zone so I just stopped the car and told my wife, Nancee, ” Watch for the buck.” As if on cue he appeared out of the ditch with his mouth hanging open, tongue dangling out of his mouth, looking ragged, sweaty and ready to chase that all day. Nancee Wild River looked at me and asked how did I know that? I smiled. “The rut is on!”

Trails A couple of days later we were hunting geese in a cornfield that Jim Bennett butts up against the woods where my tree stand is when my hunting companions Ben Elfelt and Jon McCorckle spotted a bunch of deer romping around in the same field a quarter mile away. I could see there was some chasing and playing and fun going on so I grabbed my binoculars to find the buck. The white rack stood out even though it’s not a big buck, just average, but the color of those antlers made him look better. That’s when Ben spotted another deer standing back along the woods by itself. Putting the glasses on him I saw it’s a buck. I think it’s time to spend some time in the

woods.

Terry and Michelle Ragsdale are archers but not ordinary archers, as both have won multiple Archery World Championships and National Championships, and they are accomplished deer bow hunters as well. Michelle in fact was in a tree recently when a doe and a fawn appeared and fed on acorns within her range. “I was watching those two when I saw the doe look back the way she had come and twitch her tail. I figured a buck was coming so I drew back just before he appeared. I saw the antlers right away but lost him for a second as he went under the tree. I picked him up in the sights again because of the antlers when he headed towards the doe.

I wasn’t nervous when I took aim and let the arrow go, but right after the shot my heart was pounding.

Terry told me that buck didn’t go 100 yards before they found it dead. “We’ve seen a lot of deer moving and in the rut. One was a little one -point buck that was trying to chase a doe around. It was funny watching him, curling his lip and trying to act like a big buck. I laughed because I don’t think he knew how big that rack on his head really was!”

This Thanksgiving, both dressing and stuffing

S

tuffing or dressing? I’ve always thought dressing and stuffing were the same thing, like pop and soda, but I was wrong.

They are made with same ingredients: bread, onions, celery, seasonings, but the way you bake it defines whether it’s stuffing or dressing.

Stuffing is stuffed and cooked inside the bird.

Dressing is baked in a separate dish. I prefer stuffing because it soaks up the turkey drippings and takes on the flavor of the turkey.

Many years our Thanksgiving guests number over 30 and I’ve made extra stuffing that can’t fit inside the turkey cavity. I found a way to make sure it still cooks in the turkey juices that give stuffing its great appeal. This year, I’m expecting another large crowd so Wild Chow I bought a whopping 27 pounder!

Even though this bird is a giant, I Lisa Erickson still won’t have enough room in the cavity for all the stuffing.

I brine the turkey the day before, for about 24 hours in salted water in the refrigerator. I place the turkey in a very large disposable foil pan and place that on a flat cookie sheet because the flimsy foil pan needs support. I dry the turkey with paper towels and rub it with butter, then season it. I stuff the turkey cavity first, lightly spooning in the bread mixture, not packing it tightly. I spoon the remaining stuffing around the outside of the turkey.

As the turkey cooks, you may need to remove some of the stuffing (technically, dressing) from the pan so it doesn’t over cook, which will make space for more turkey juices.

Be sure to check the inside of the turkey stuffing to make sure it’s cooked throughout. I use a meat thermometer. When it hits 165 degrees in the center of the stuffing, it’s done.

Thanksgiving Turkey Dressing or Stuffing Adapted from Victoria Granof in Bon Appetite 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter plus more for baking dish 1 pound Italian bread, cubed (about 10 cups), about 2 loaves 2 1/2 cups onion, chopped 1 1/2 cups celery, chopped 1 apple, chopped 1/2 cup flat-leaf parsley, minced 2 Tbsp. fresh sage, minced 1 Tbsp. fresh rosemary, minced 1 Tbsp. fresh thyme, minced 2 eggs, beaten 2 tsp. kosher salt 1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth, divided 1/2 cup half and half cream Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Scatter bread in a single layer on a baking sheet. Toast, stirring occasionally, until dried out, about 1-1 ½ hours. Let cool; transfer to a large bowl.

Meanwhile, melt 3/4 cup butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat; add onions, apple and celery. Stir often until just beginning to brown, about 10 minutes. Add to bread; stir in seasonings.

Drizzle in 1 ½ cups broth and toss gently. Let cool.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9 x 13 baking pan; set aside or butter the pan your turkey will cook in. In a bowl, whisk the other ½ cup of broth, half and half and eggs. Add to bread mixture; fold gently until thoroughly combined. Transfer to prepared dish or stuff as much as you can in the turkey cavity. Put the rest around the turkey. Cover with foil and bake until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of dressing registers 160 degrees, or about 40 minutes when not stuffed in the turkey. Continue to bake uncovered until stuffing is thoroughly cooked and top is browned and crisp, 40-45 minutes longer or keep covered until turkey is done. Serve immediately.

Cooper silenced by shocking Raymond Cooper’s plan was simple on Wednesday as he began his daily program at noon on Talk Radio 88.3. As had become his custom, the show commenced with Lee Greenwood singing “I’m Proud to Be an American,” followed by a heart-warming prayer by Raymond.

Just a few hours earlier, as Juliet Stoughton sat across the booth from Sarah Hyden-Smith, sipping hot tea and memorizing the Hoffbrau’s breakfast menu, neither she nor Sarah had any suspicion this conversation would alter their friendship in so many ways.

Eventually, Juliet lowered her guard enough to share something she had been hiding from her new friend. “I need to tell you something. Something really important.”

“OK,” responded Sarah in a caring tone.

She explained that her old life was much different. Before moving to the valley, she had a good job. She was involved in several community causes. She just wasn’t the same person before moving to The Valley.

After her friend’s confession, Sarah asked if there was anything else she’d wanted to tell her.

Back at the radio station, Raymond Cooper was revved up for an exciting show. After the prayer, Cooper began a stirring discourse concerning the importance of honesty in the press.

Cooper knew that by now almost

every listener would have read the morning edition of Lennox Valley Hometown News, and he was none too happy about the words Editor Iris Long used to characterize his election campaign.

“Perhaps,” Cooper barked, “the alleged editor has an ulterior motive. Maybe there is more to her negativity than meets the eye.”

Raymond welcomed Farley Pucket, to the show. Pucket owned the local True Value Hardware Store and was Cooper’s biggest advertiser. Raymond knew where his bread was buttered and trusted Farley to agree with his opinion on most any subject.

“Did you get a chance to read the so-called editorial in the paper this morning?” Cooper quizzed his guest.

“I feel,” answered Pucket, “it’s the duty of every citizen to keep up with the goings-on in their community, but it’s getting harder for me to read the biased opinions of that so-called editor every week,” continued a riledup Farley. “I’m just about ready to cancel my subscription.”

“Have you,” asked Cooper, “heard any rumors about Long planning to enter the mayor’s race?”

“It wouldn’t surprise me none,” answered Pucket.

“There’s no other explanation for the way she is defaming a fi ne man like you.”

With that, Cooper opened the telephone line for his fi rst caller.

After a brief introduction by Cooper, Penrod spoke in a disconcerted tone, “I just came from the county courthouse, where I was going over the list of vendors for this week’s farmers market.”

Vera stopped to catch her breath before continuing, “That’s when it happened.”

“That’s when what happened, Vera?” asked an interested Cooper.

“There was a young woman there. I’ve seen her in town once or twice. Her name was Juliet Stoughton.”

“Go on,” prompted Cooper, hoping for the kind of gossip for which Vera was best known.

“She was there to place her name on the ballot for the Lennox Valley mayor’s race. She had that new woman preacher with her.”

This might have been the fi rst time Raymond Cooper found himself totally speechless.

There was at least ten seconds of complete silence before a recorded commercial for tiller repair kits at Pucket’s True Valley Hardware began playing.

Upon his return to the air 30 seconds later, Cooper was loaded for bear. “Who is this Juliet Stoughton?”

“I wonder,” Farley chimed in, “if she could be an employee of the Federal Reserve System.”

“I smell trouble,” said a worried-sounding Cooper. “The last thing our valley needs is a tool of the media running for public office.”

The second question, which would have allowed the school to bond for $9 million to improve athletics and arts facilities, fared slightly better with 4,246 voters, or 43.22 percent, in support. Still, 5,578, or 56.78 percent, voted against the bond, which would have increased taxes about $11 per year on a $250,000 property.

Pollution Control Agency drafts renewal of Jackson Meadow wastewater permit The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has made a preliminary determination to reissue the wastewater treatment permit for Jackson Meadow in Marine on St. Croix.

A draft permit is available for review on the MPCA public notices webpage (pca.state.mn.us/ publicnotices). The MPCA will mail or email a copy of the draft upon request.

Comments, petitions and other requests must be received at the MPCA in writing on or before the public comment period deadline, 4:30 p.m. Dec. 6.

The Jackson Meadow wastewater treatment facility is a Class C facility consisting of two treatment systems, the North and South systems. Each is designed to treat an average wet weather

flow of 5,600 gallons per day with a five-day carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand strength of 250 milligrams per liter and a total suspended solids loading of 250 milligrams per liter. Each system serves 32 individual homes.

Wetland Treatment System A wetland treatment system differs from a standard septic system because the water is treated before it applied to the soil. The process starts with septic tanks.

The septic tanks are much larger for Jackson Meadow because the wastewater from 32 homes is processed for treatment – not just one home.

After setting, the liquid is pumped into a constructed wetland for treatment. This wetland consists of a plastic liner, gravel

bed, and insulating mulch layer.

Wetland plants and bacteria work in concert to purify the water as is flows through the cell. The water level is kept below the top mulch layer so that no water is exposed during the treatment process.

After treatment in the wetland cell, the water is discharged into an unlined infiltration bed. The pretreated water undergoes additional treatment (polishing) as it percolates down through the soil.

The Jackson Meadow treatment system is called a subsurface flow constructed wetland. This unique and innovated constructed wetland is used to treat and dispose of the sewage from all homes in the community.

Dynamic Recycling will transport, recycle county’s consumer waste Dynamic Recycling will transport and recycle waste consumer electronics collected at the Washington County Environmental Center, after the County Board approved a contract with the company Nov. 7.

Washington County has been collecting and recycling waste consumer electronics since 2008. In 2017, it is estimated that 1.9 million pounds of waste electronics will be collected from county residents.

The county monitors the hazardous waste and recycling markets, and recently conducted a request for proposal to ensure that the county receives the best available rates for recycling waste electronics.

The county currently uses Dynamic Recycling under a state contract as its vendor for recycling waste electronics. The new contract, directly with Dynamic, will save the county about $78,000 annually.

Under the state contract, the 2018 cost for recycling waste electronics was projected to be $345,000; under the new contract, the 2018 cost is projected to be $267,000.

‘Warden’s House Trunk Show’ Special exhibit of Victorian and Edwardian Fashions Seldom displayed gowns, clothing and accessories from the Washington County Historical Society collections are on view this month, many for the first time.

The Warden’s House Trunk Show opened last Saturday and continues November 18 and 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. WCHS members enter free; others will be asked to pay $5 admission.

The first floor of the Warden’s House is filled with mannequins and display cases showing off the dresses, suits and accessories of the Victorian through Edwardian eras. Items on display have come to the historical society from throughout Washington County and include a 1914 wedding ensemble worn by Stillwater resident Leona Triebel Kreimer and the 1880s hand-made morning coat of Cottage Grove resident Eva Perkins Steen, the wife of Dr. A.H. Steen.

There is also a beautiful dress worn by Mary Severance of Cottage Grove, who lived in the historic Cedarhurst Mansion. Items from Evelyn Bolles Grant of the Afton area will be on display and also dresses from Ada Slaughter and Ada Pennington, both of Stillwater. The earliest piece is said to have been worn in the 1850s.

Washington County releases transit needs study for public comment The Washington County Board of Commissioners approved a Transit Needs Study for the county Nov. 7, and the report has been released for public comment.

The Washington County Transit Needs Study examines the challenges Washington County faces in providing transportation services. It also prioritizes a series of strategies that can be implemented within the short term.

The Tier 1 strategies are: • general purpose dial-a-ride: increase use of transit service requiring advanced scheduling; • community circulator: local transit for shopping, commuting and participating in community activities; • site-specific shuttle: connections for the beginning and end of an individual trip to get to major employers, institutions, or retail destinations;

• subsidized taxi or ride-hailing service: implement program for use of vouchers or subsidies for taxis and other transportation services; • volunteer driver program: explore opportunities for volunteer reimbursement and driver incentives; • travel information and referral services: compile and provide travel information and referral services, conduct countywide educational marketing campaign; • trip brokerage: centralizing the scheduling of transportation services to maximize efficient use of resources and provide more choices for consumers.

Other strategies were deemed to be Tier 2 or 3 strategies, meaning they could be carried forward but offer fewer benefits for the target markets, have higher projected costs, or are more complex to

implement in the short term.

The draft report also details demographic analysis, existing transit service coverage, stakeholder input, best practices, funding opportunities, and an implementation framework.

The Washington County Board of Commissioners invites public input on the plan from all interested parties. Comments will be accepted between Nov. 7 and Jan. 6, 2018 by telephone, email, mail, or online. caught a glimpse of Bigfoot last summer on my way home from work. There he was just off Highway 95, hanging out at the edge of the woods near someone’s mailbox.

Maybe you saw him too?

Not the actual creature of folklore, of course, but a cut out silhouette of Bigfoot on the move. I’m no Sasquatch tracker, but even I can pick out that bulky, hairy silhouette in a line up.

I figured whomever had the driveway next to said mailbox was having a little fun and that I’d be saying hi to Bigfoot on my commute for years to come. I liked the idea.

Then, just as suddenly as it had appeared, the Bigfoot was gone.

Editor Briefly, I wondered what had Suzanne Lindgren happened. Perhaps it had unnerved the mail carrier? Or been knocked over by a defensive bear? Maybe the landowner (or more likely, their significant other) had gotten tired of looking at the thing?

The questions had little need for answers. Until recently, when I saw Bigfoot again near Highway 61 in Forest Lake. It was the same cutout: a hulking, hairy figure, mid stride, set up to look like he was emerging from the woods.

Now, I suppose it’s possible that these things are on sale at big box stores and my Bigfoot sightings are little more than coincidence. Or perhaps — and I like this idea a lot more — someone made this cutout and is moving it from place to place.

If that’s the case, who knows where Bigfoot trekked between my first sighting and the second?

The thought of him on the move, and whoever is behind that movement, has captured my imagination.

I don’t know why, exactly. It’s a little bit of whimsy in a serious world, and a reminder not to give in to that seriousness completely.

I did a little research online and I don’t see this guy for sale at Target or Walmart, Home Depot or Menards. If it’s some kind of public art project (maybe those wily artists up at Franconia Sculpture Park?) I didn’t find any evidence of it by way of Google.

In short, I’ve found nothing. Which naturally has left me more intrigued by this mystery than I ever was by the legend of Sasquatch itself.

I’m wondering if others might be able to help fill in the blanks. And so, I ask in earnest, have you seen Bigfoot lately?

Farmers Union and Farmers Union Insurance Agency invest in 40 Square as viable farmer health care option The Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) Executive Committee voted on Nov. 3 to approve the organization’s purchase of shares in 40 Square Cooperative Health Solutions, a new health care cooperative for Minnesota farmers.

MFU, a grassroots organization, has its heritage in the cooperative model. 40 Square is a relevant example of farmers forming a cooperative to collectively address a need.

“Ever since farmers in Jackson County started organizing for fairer commodity prices in the early 1910s, MFU has been a strong backer of new cooperatives,” said Gary Wertish, president of MFU. “We supported legislation passed this year that allowed Minnesota farmers and agribusinesses to form cooperatives for health care, which makes

Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority Hearing

In other recent news at the Capitol, the State Government Finance Committee, of which I am a member, held a second hearing last week regarding the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority (MSFA) and Monterrey Security. As you may recall in news stories earlier this fall, the MSFA hired this security firm for U.S. Bank Stadium in spite of a history of problems. It turns out, Monterrey Security failed to give background checks to its employees as required under state law, and also had troubled billing practices.

The security of the thousands of Minnesotans who attend sporting events, concerts, etc. at our public stadiums is of paramount importance and something that should not be taken lightly. What’s more, with big events coming next year including the Super Bowl, we want to ensure that people are well-protected and safe when attending these events.

Holding these hearings is helping us get to the bottom of the serious breach of public trust by the MSFA and Monterrey Security. It also highlights why Republican efforts this session to bring more accountability, oversight and transparency to the MSFA were critical to protect citizens and taxpayers.

Thanks to a number of solutions put forward last session, we were able to reverse a four year trend of double-digit premium increases, as GOP lawmakers advanced policies to address affordability, accessibility, stability and choice on the individual market. For 2018, rates are stable or declining, a huge turnaround from a nearly 60 percent jump just one year ago. What’s more, according to the Minnesota Department of Commerce, without these reforms, rates would have risen by 20 percent or more.

While it’s unclear what steps will be taken at the federal level regarding health care reform, here in Minnesota we are making strides to lower costs for the Minnesota families, small business owners and individuals who purchase their own insurance.

Real ID Update Recently, the Department of Homeland Security announced that Minnesota was granted another extension for Real ID through October of 2018. This is great news that will ensure a Minnesota issued license or ID card can continue to be used to fly, enter a federal building, or visit loved ones on a military base.

And while the Real ID extension is a positive step forward as our state works to fully implement the federal requirements, it also highlights the ongoing problems with the new Minnesota Licensing and Registration System that the state transitioned to earlier this summer. Also called MNLARS, it has caused frustration and headaches for many Minnesotans who have been caught up in an error-riddled system. Ensuring that the MNLARS system works properly is critical to move forward with Real ID implementation.

MnDOT seeks public comment regarding mowing/haying on state right of way Listening sessions being held across the state to hear from Minnesotans

Celebrate 25th Christmas at the Courthouse Nov. 17-19 The 25th annual Christmas at the Courthouse will be Nov. 17-19 at the Washington County Historic Courthouse in Stillwater.

To celebrate the 25th year of this annual celebration in the longest standing courthouse in Minnesota, the courthouse will be decorated in holiday splendor and opened to gift vendors, singers, and food stalls.

The public is invited to the opening gala for Christmas at the Courthouse 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, to taste hors d'oeuvres from local vendors while getting the first look into the holiday bazaar featuring unique goods from local craftspeople and vendors.

Lift Bridge Brewery, Northern Vineyards, and St. Croix Boat & Packet will supply refreshments in souvenir glasses. Friday night’s menu will be provided by Brine’s, Chowgirls Catering, Kowalski’s, Wedge & Wheel, Scheel Catering, Gladys’ Dazzling Desserts, and Acapulco’s.

There will be live entertainment throughout the event, starting on Friday evening with harpist Karissa Kockelman, and Curtis & Loretta performing in the courtroom.

Saturday’s entertainment will include the Vallee de

Croix chorus, and the St. Croix Brass Quartet, as well as a holiday fashion show and ballet performers in costume, among others.

Sunday’s entertainment will include the Stillwater Junior High Choir, and other singers.

Vendors will supply locally-created foods and gift items, including hand-cut paper, blacksmith seasonings, coffee, jewelry, soaps, wood crafts, ceramics, and more.

Friday’s gala is $25 per person, with proceeds going to the building’s restoration fund.

Christmas at the Courthouse continues with the Holiday Bazaar 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, and Sunday, Nov. 19, with free entrance and all the gift and food vendors available to visitors. Santa will visit 12 noon to 3 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

Sheriff’s Office to receive grant to assist in securing courthouse entrance The Washington County Sheriff’s Office will receive a $6,604 grant from the state Court Administrator’s Office to help pay for the county’s court security unit. The County Board accepted the grant Nov. 7.

The Washington County Court Security Unit deputies screen approximately 110,000 visitors and 84,000 bags or parcels annually at the court’s secure entrance checkpoint.

The deputies use walk-through magnetometers and x-ray baggage scanners, as well as hand-held metal detectors. The deputies locate approximately 2,000 prohibited items each year.

The grant will be used to further strengthen the security features, to continue to provide safety for employees and visitors.

The cost of this project is $13,761; the grant will fund $6,604 of the cost, requiring a county match of $7,157.
