Valley Dance April Family Dance

On Saturday, April 18 the fourth dance in The Valley Dances Series continues the program, enabled by donations from area sponsors and volunteer staff. This event is designed to encourage community members of all ages to enjoy live music and dancing from many different cultures. All events are held from 7 to 10 p.m. at Taylor’s Falls Community Center, 312 Government St., Taylors Falls, Minn. 55084. Admission is charged. Bob Walser is a popular local musician who has been a long time favorite for fun family dance music. He performs a wide range of music from sea shanty and Scandinavian traditional tunes to Irish and Finnish folk music that he will play along with his friends: fiddler Art Bjorngjeld, concertina/banjo player Pat O’Loughlin and bass player Julie Young. Don’t have a partner or know how to dance? No problem. This kind of dancing is all inclusive! “This program was meant to bridge the gap between the young and elders, and bring everyone together to dance says founder Dr. Kelley Hagenbuch, of Taylor’s Falls Family Chiropractic. “Dance is a wonderful way to build a healthy community The last dance of the season will be coming up on May 16 with The Mad Cow Band, as a fun conclusion to the Spring Awakenings Festival in St.

work of art. For the congregation, says Moratzka, the piece represents Jesus’ challenge to his followers to find those who had been told they were junk and to change that message into one of acceptance and beauty. The crucifix was erected in front of the church’s Thorvalson statue of

Christ — the usual focal point of the altar — and stayed there through Good Friday. “Easter Sunday is Resurrection Sunday, so [the Thorvalson] statue will be un-veiled and front and center for all to see, said Moratzka. The found art crucifix was placed in the chapel until next Lent.

the Scandia Fire Hall. The policy had previously been 15 minutes, but was narrowed to eight in 2012. Jason May, who lives 11 minutes away from the hall, asked the council to reconsider the policy at a council meeting in March. May is a former member of the Wyoming, Minn., fire department. From the audience, Klay Farnham, who is

currently a member of Marine on St. Croix Fire & Rescue, said he lives nine minutes away from the Scandia fire station. He could easily be a dual member of both departments if the requirement was one minute broader, Farnham said. Farnham noted he works nights and would be available to respond during the weekdays, when both departments currently are more challenged to find volunteers.

Hinz, though, recommended the city keep the policy where it is, noting that response times of firefighters are factored into the city’s ISO rating, which affects property insurance rates. Likewise, Hinz said, firefighters who live farther out are frequently unable to respond in time to assist with many of the medical runs. “They miss more trucks and they get frustrated, Hinz said. “Even those at eight minutes have a hard time making some of the trucks.

Following the recent resignation of city worker Brian Jahnke, the city has begun advertising for a full-time maintenance worker. During the portion of the meeting held jointly with the Comfort Lake Forest Lake Watershed District, the council heard reports on the number of watershed district projects and a proposed memorandum of understanding between the district and the city. The next Scandia City Council meeting will be held April 21 at 7 p.m.
