It's My Turn Guest Column Opinion

Local police show how it should be done

I am a true crime aficionado. You can usually find me watching true crime or listening to a true crime podcast. As a result, I have heard about hundreds and hundreds of cases.

Too many of those have been about children who have vanished. Far too often, one thing I’ve heard is about a parent who reported a child, especially an older child, missing only to get almost no response from local police.

Many times, the responding officers say it’s likely just a runaway and to call them back if they don’t hear anything in a day or two. In many cases, that is too late.

I am happy to report that is not the case in Coos Bay.

Last weekend, a 13-year-old boy went missing from his home early in the morning. I learned a lot about it because my wife works with the boy’s mom, and I live on the street where they eventually found him.

When Coos Bay police got the call about a missing teen, they came out in force. I counted at least five Coos Bay police cars, saw additional officers from North Bend, the Coquille Tribe, the Confederated Tribes and the Coos County Sheriff’s Office. There was also a big contingent of Coos Bay firefighters.

When the search didn’t find the boy quickly, the sheriff’s office search and rescue team.

At some point, they were able to find security video that showed the teen walking down my street, so the search turned to that area. Police, firefighters, search and rescue volunteers and search dogs spent hours going up and down the street, walking through

the forest nearby, talking to anyone who was out and going door-to-door in the neighborhood.

In this case, the outcome was a good one. I watched as a Coos Bay police officer drove down the street calling the child’s name. And then someone walked out of the woods.

It turns out the boy has a medical condition that has led to him sleepwalking. He apparently got up and walked out of his house while sleeping, ending up blocks away before falling back to sleep. As the search for him was happening, he was sleeping nearby.

This is not the first time I’ve seen the response. The first two times were with my family. My then 16-year-old disappeared one afternoon, and again Coos Bay police and firefighters showed up in force. The sheriff’s office K-9 officer was on its way to my home, when I found my kid.

Six months later, my youngest child went missing. Again, there was a massive turnout with police and firefighters walking through the forest, going door-to-door and searching. This time, a neighbor found my daughter walking several miles from home.

We were lucky that in all three cases our children were found. There was no crime and no accident. But it is reassuring to me that if there comes a day when a crime or accident does happen, our police, our firefighters, our law enforcement community as a while will show up en masse and they will search until they get an answer.

Kudos to our local officers, firefighters and search and rescue team members. I hope I never need you, but I’m glad you’re always ready just in case.

A Word, Please: Less or fewer

People who are careful about their grammar take extra care with “less” and “fewer.” Most of the time, the results are good. “Ben has fewer worries this year” sounds better than “Ben has less worries this year.”

But even though they make good choices most of the time, sticklers on the less-and-fewer issue usually don’t understand the grammar as well as they think they do. So when they take a hard line approach, they set themselves up for a fall.

Ask anyone who’s careful with “less” and “fewer” to explain the difference, and they’ll tell you this: “Less” is for mass nouns and “fewer” is for count nouns.

Mass nouns are things that aren’t counted, like “music,” “air” and “energy.” Count nouns, as the name suggests, can be counted: “song,” “molecule,” “volt.”

Mass nouns have no plural form. You say, “I love music,” not “musics.” You say, “I breathe air,” not “airs.” And you say, “He has so much energy,” not “so many energies.”

Count nouns have a plural form and a singular form. So you can say, “I like that song” or “I like those songs.” You can say, “one molecule” or “two molecules.” You can say “one volt” or “100 volts.” So if it’s true you must use “fewer” for count nouns, then those grocery store express lane signs that say “10 items or less” are grammatically incorrect. After all,

as any stickler will tell you, “item” is a count noun. And if count nouns require “fewer,” then those checkout lanes are wrong to use “less.”

But there are a few problems with this reasoning.

First, people often want words to have one exclusive meaning.

If “to rob” involves a direct confrontation, then “to burglarize” must mean the stealthy kind of theft. If “eager” is the happy, excited kind of anticipation, then “anxious” must mean the kind filled with dread. If “farther” refers to physical distance, than “further” must mean something other than physical distance. In fact, none of these rules are absolutes, and dictionary definitions allow overlap for these word pairs. The same is true for “less” and “fewer.” Dictionaries allow “less” to mean “fewer” in any context where it sounds natural and makes sense. So it’s not wrong to say, “10 items or less,” it’s simply not as proper as “10 items or fewer.”

Also, a better guide for when to choose “less” or “fewer” isn’t about mass nouns and count nouns. It’s about singulars and plurals. Consider this scenario: You’re in the express lane, which is for 10 items or fewer, and you realize you have 11 items, so you take one out of your cart. You now have one less item, not one fewer item, since “item” is singular here.

Lastly, people focused on “rules” can sometimes make poor choices. If you’re trying to be proper and you say your destination is “fewer than 10 miles away” or that you have “fewer than 50 dollars in your wallet,” you’re making a bad call. Why? Because “fewer” emphasizes individual units. And while, yes, dollars and miles are individual things, you probably were not talking about them that way. That is, 10 miles isn’t really 10 things so much as it’s a singular physical distance. So “fewer than 10 miles” implies it’s exactly 9 miles or 8 miles or 3 miles, eliminating the possibility it’s 9 1/2 miles or 8.8 miles or any other distance that isn’t hyper-focused on counting precise one-mile units. Similarly, “fewer than 50 dollars” leaves no room for cents. You’re counting whole dollars only — or so the verbiage implies. “Less than 50 dollars” better captures your meaning of a singular sum of money.

To pick between “less” and “fewer,” the rule about mass nouns and count nouns will serve you well in most situations. But if the results sound awkward, like “one fewer item,” forget the rule and go with your ear: “one less item.”

John was born to Leonard and Carol Garrett on November 2, 1956 in North Bend, Oregon. He passed away unexpectedly at his home in the early morning of June 13, 2023.

John is remembered as a quiet “sweet” man who loved his family and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He graduated from Marshfield High School, class of 1975. He enlisted in the US Army in 1983 and worked as a helicopter weapons service technician. Following his honorable discharge he worked as a Longshoreman like his father and as a maintenance technician for the Coquille Indian

Darren Eric Jones

March 4, 1985 – June 13, 2023

Darren Jones, 38, of Myrtle Point was born on March 4, 1985, in Coos Bay, Oregon to Danny Alvin Jones and Nancy Rae (Partney) Jones. He passed away at home on June 13, 2023, in Myrtle Point, Oregon.

Darren grew up in Coos Bay and attended Eastside Elementary, Millicoma Middle School and graduated in 2003 from Marshfield High School. He was very active in many youth sports and went on to play 4 years of football and basketball at Marshfield High School.

After high school, he completed the Carpenters Apprenticeship and became a Journeyman Carpenter while working for his uncle at Scott Partney Construction. He worked his way up in the company to become a supervisor on large commercial jobs and multi-million-dollar homes. He loved working construction and took great pride in his workmanship. With his dedicated work ethic and positive attitude, he gained many friends during his 20-year career.

Darren met Becca (Rebecca) Pearl Scolari in 2008 and they were married on June 27, 2009 in Myrtle Point. They were blessed with a son, Brody Michael Jones (2009) and daughter, Kendra Madison Jones (2012). They settled down to a rural farm life outside of Myrtle Point. Darren enjoyed planting and growing a garden and adding in a variety of animals to the farm.

He was happiest sharing his love of the outdoors with family and friends. He loved to fish

and hunt and carried on the skills he learned from his father, grandfather, and uncles. But fishing was his passion. His kids fished with him as soon as they could hold a fishing pole. They were his favorite fishing crew along with his father. Friends were always welcome to join him on a fishing trip.

Darren had a loving, giving, helping nature. He also had a great personality and sense of humor. His family was his whole world, and he enjoyed sharing it with extended family and friends. He loved having large gatherings at the farm where he was at the grill, sharing his fishing tales, adventures on the farm, and work stories, all with his comedic sense of humor.

Darren is survived by his wife, Becca; son, Brody; daughter, Kendra; father and mother, Danny and Nancy Jones; sisters, Danica Jones, and Karlissa (Carrie) Jones; fatherin-law and mother-in-law, Carl and Donna John-

Hannah Klopping

Hannah Klopping, a dear and vibrant friend to many, was born September 28, 1985 to her loving family - Paul and Caron; and brothers, Ryan and Jonathan. Her trusting nature grew from being carried on her brother’s shoulders during the first five years of her life. She spent twenty in Corvallis, and graduated from Crescent Valley High School in 2003.

All lifelong, Hannah ran, swam, hiked, bowled, snow-skied, played softball, and loved her partners, teammates and coaches. She acted, sang, wrote songs and raps,

studied piano, played the tuba, performed as a percussionist, and loved her band members and directors. A graduate of the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences, she staffed concerts in Arizona, worked as an intern at 4th Street Recording Studio in Santa Monica, and loved musicians.

At Medford’s Copper Plank, she cooked, cleaned, booked performers, tapped kegs, served, charmed, and loved her customers. She demonstrated, campaigned for equal rights and justice, voted, and loved democracy. She barbered, shaved, cut,

Will James “Bill” Will

January 5, 1944-May 25, 2023

A celebration of life will be held July 22, 2023, at 12:00 pm at the Marina Activity Center, 263 Marina Way in Winchester Bay, Oregon.

James “Bill” William Will was born January 5, 1944, in Bandon, Oregon to Luella and James Will. He passed peacefully on May 25, 2023.

Bill attended his elementary and high school years in Bandon. He was proud of the fact that he started his school years in a bassinette in the back of his mother’s classroom, where she taught at the Quonset Hut. Bill graduated from high school in Bandon, Oregon where he grew fond of fishing and hunting. He attended Oregon State University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Forest

Velleen O’Brien

Kozakiewicz

July 5, 1942 - January 3, 2023

In loving memory of Velleen O’Brien Kozakiewicz, youngest daughter of Harry Farmer and Lottie O’Brien was born on July 27, 1955 in Palmer, Alaska and passed away on June 14, 2023. Her family moved to Ashland, were she went to school and grew up. She was loved by all she came into contact with, because of her love for life.

Velleen worked at Takta in Moses Lake, Washington. In Show Low, Arizona she worked at the Elks, VFW and Allied Cash Advance as a manager. In Show Low she met her soulmate, Michael Kozkiewicz and married in June of 2003.

Velleen is survived by her husband, Michael; sons, Roger Voiles, Josh Voiles, Joe Jacobsen Jr., Chris Platter and Jere-

colored and styled hair, and loved her clients - in her home salon and at Evy’s in Bandon. She blew bubbles, read stories, played hide-andseek, danced, cavorted, and loved children.

Hannah infused poetry, music, humor, and kindness into the lives of people who were lucky enough to meet her on a wide and divergent path. She knew her purpose in life – to bring joy, love, and belonging to everyone she met, and she lived that purpose every day. She took burritos to kitchen-less people in the park, and gave community-sheltered

people free haircuts to help them return to the job market or school. Her luck of the draw was genetic biochemical imbalance, medical conditions that were treatable, but complicated and difficult to manage. She embraced the imperfections of her and each of our beautiful lives. Her smile, like sunshine, filled and warmed the space between us. Her Facebook tagline was “Life is short, be happy.”

Hannah loved her partner, Jonathan and his sweet three-year-old daughter. Their plans for a life together ended tragically with Hannah’s

death on April 28, 2023, in a single-car accident on HWY 20.

Those wishing to honor Hannah’s life may contribute to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness that educates and supports the 20% of us who, on any day, are struggling with a mental health condition.

In following their daughter’s example that her door was open and welcoming to everyone, Paul and Caron are hosting a celebration of Hannah’s life on Sunday, July 16, 2023 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at North Bend Lanes and Event Center, 225 Virginia

Avenue, in North Bend. Friends and family are invited to dine, play games and music, share stories, and offer prayers of gratitude for her life, and guidance for ours.

Engineering. During this time, he married his wife of 59 years, Sharon Will (Mellish). Together they raised three daughters: Pamela, Debbie and Cheryl.

Bill worked multiple jobs in the timber industry throughout his lifetime. He was employed by personal business owners, as well as for International Paper Company, Bohemia Incorporated, Willamette Industries and Weyerhaeuser. He spent his time outdoors and building his business relationships. Bill and his family settled in Reedsport in 1981 where he started his employment for Bohemia Inc. He loved the Oregon coast and all of its outdoor adventures. In his older years, taking daily drives to

Winchester Bay became one of his favorite hobbies. Fishing and hunting were among his favorite past times.

Bill was known for his social personality and jovial smile. He could strike up a conversation with anybody and he knew no strangers. He was often seen driving his truck through town with his dog riding passenger.

Bill is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughters, Pamela, Debbie and Cheryl; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Bill is preceded in death by his mother, Luella; father, James; and son John.

He often visited his local animal shelter and had a strong love of dogs. His family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his

name to Reedsport K9 Shelter, 146 N. 4th St., Reedsport, Oregon, or online at tinyurl.com/ReedsportK9S.

The property in which you are living is in foreclosure.

A foreclosure sale is scheduled for 09/27/2023 (date). The date of this sale may be postponed. Unless the lender that is foreclosing on this property is paid before the sale date, the foreclosure will go through and someone new will own this property. After the sale, the new owner is required to provide you with contact information and notice that the sale took place. The following information applies to you only if you are a bona fide tenant occupying and renting this property as a residential dwelling under a legitimate rental agreement. The information does not apply to you if you own this property or if you are not a bona fide residential tenant. If the foreclosure sale goes through, the new owner will have the right to require you to move out. Before the new owner can require you to move, the new owner must provide you with written notice that specifies the date by which you must move out. If you do not leave before the move-out date, the new owner can have the sheriff remove you from the property after a court hearing. You will receive notice of the court hearing. PROTECTION FROM EVICTION IF YOU ARE A BONA FIDE TENANT OCCUPYING AND RENTING THIS PROPERTY AS A RESIDENTIAL DWELLING, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO CONTINUE LIVING IN THIS PROPERTY AFTER THE FORECLOSURE SALE FOR: • 60 DAYS FROM THE DATE YOU ARE GIVEN A WRITTEN TERMINATION NOTICE, IF

primary residence, the new owner can give you written notice and require you to move out after 30 days, even though you have a fixed term lease with more than 30 days left. You must be provided with at least 30 days’ written notice after the foreclosure sale before you can be required to move. A bona fide tenant is a residential tenant who is not the borrower (property owner) or a child, spouse or parent of the borrower, and whose rental agreement: • Is the result of an arm’slength transaction; • Requires the payment of rent that is not substantially less than fair market rent for the property, unless the rent is reduced or subsidized due to a federal, state or local subsidy; and • Was entered into prior to the date of the foreclosure sale. ABOUT YOUR TENANCY BETWEEN NOW AND THE FORECLOSURE SALE: RENT YOU SHOULD CONTINUE TO PAY RENT TO YOUR LANDLORD UNTIL THE PROPERTY IS SOLD OR UNTIL A COURT TELLS YOU OTHERWISE.

IF YOU DO NOT PAY RENT, YOU CAN BE EVICTED. BE SURE TO KEEP PROOF OF ANY PAYMENTS YOU MAKE. SECURITY DEPOSIT You may apply your security deposit and any rent you paid in advance against the current rent you owe your landlord as provided in ORS 90.367. To do this, you must notify your landlord in writing that you want to subtract the amount of your security deposit or prepaid rent from your rent payment. You may do this only for the rent you owe your current landlord. If you do this, you must do so before the foreclosure sale. The business or individual who buys this property at the foreclosure sale is not responsible to you for any deposit or prepaid rent you paid to your landlord.

ABOUT YOUR TENANCY

AFTER THE FORECLOSURE SALE

The new owner that buys this property at the foreclosure sale may be willing to allow you to stay as a tenant instead of requiring you to move out after 30 or 60 days. After the sale, you should receive a written notice informing you that the sale took place and giving you the new owner’s name and contact information. You should contact the new owner if you would like to stay. If the new owner accepts rent from you, signs a new residential rental agreement with you or does not notify you in writing within 30 days after the date of the foreclosure sale that you must move out, the new owner becomes your new landlord and must maintain the property. Otherwise: • You do not owe rent; • The new owner is not your landlord and is not responsible for maintaining the property on your behalf; and • You must move out by the date the new owner specifies in a notice to you. The new owner may offer to pay your moving expenses and any other costs or amounts you and the new owner agree on in exchange for your agreement to leave the premises in less than 30 or 60 days. You should speak with a lawyer to fully understand your rights before making any decisions regarding your tenancy. IT IS UNLAWFUL FOR ANY PERSON TO TRY TO FORCE YOU TO LEAVE YOUR DWELLING UNIT WITHOUT FIRST GIVING YOU WRITTEN NOTICE AND GOING TO COURT TO EVICT YOU. RESIDENTIAL TENANTS

The property in which you are living is in foreclosure.

A foreclosure sale is scheduled for 09/15/2023 (date).

PROTECTION FROM EVICTION IF YOU ARE A BONA FIDE TENANT OCCUPYING AND RENTING THIS PROPERTY AS A RESIDENTIAL DWELLING, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO CONTINUE LIVING IN THIS PROPERTY AFTER THE FORECLOSURE SALE FOR:

• 60 DAYS FROM THE DATE YOU ARE GIVEN A WRITTEN TERMINATION NOTICE, IF YOU HAVE A FIXED TERM LEASE; OR • AT LEAST 30 DAYS FROM THE DATE YOU ARE GIVEN A WRITTEN TERMINATION NOTICE, IF YOU HAVE A MONTHTO-MONTH OR WEEKTO-WEEK RENTAL AGREEMENT. If the new owner wants to move in and use this property as a primary residence, the new owner can give you written notice and require you to move out after 30 days, even though you have a fixed term lease with more than 30 days left.

AFTER THE

FORECLOSURE SALE

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR RIGHTS, YOU SHOULD CONSULT A LAWYER. If you believe you need legal assistance, contact the Oregon State Bar and ask for the lawyer referral service. Contact information for the Oregon State Bar is included with this notice. If you do not have enough money to pay a lawyer and are otherwise eligible, you may be able to receive legal assistance for free. Information about whom to contact for free legal assistance is included with this notice.

A bona fide tenant is a residential tenant who is not the borrower (property owner) or a child, spouse or parent of the borrower, and whose rental agreement: • Is the result of an arm’slength transaction; • Requires the payment of rent that is not substantially less than fair market rent for the property, unless the

rent is reduced or subsidized due to a federal, state or local subsidy; and • Was entered into prior to the date of the foreclosure sale.

ABOUT YOUR TENANCY AFTER THE FORECLOSURE SALE The new owner that buys this property at the foreclosure sale may be willing to allow you to stay as a tenant instead of requiring you to move out after 30 or 60 days. IT IS UNLAWFUL

I found my first picture in a photo album given to me by my long-time friend Diane Blake Lewis, and recently found the story that went with the picture of the 1927 Bandon High School football team, who became Coos County football champions that year.

Although I can't identify them, I do know who is in the picture, including Coach John Fasnacht, top left, and Vern Brown, bottom right. I am pretty sure the man at top right is Kenneth (Denny) Blake, Diane's father. I believe that others in the picture are Fred and Powell Lancaster, Buel, Euel and Curt Beckham, Hank McCue, Chet Campbell, Virgil King, Ned Gurney, Dan Curren and Lawrence Dorland. The Beckhams and the Lancasters were cousins.

And here is the story about the big game as reported in the Nov. 3, 1927, Western World, probably written by my grandfather.

"When Powell Lancaster, captain and fullback for the Bandon High School football team, raced across the field for a distance of 85 yards at the kickoff for a touchdown Saturday he made football history. It was the opening play of a battle between Marshfield and the local team which resulted in Bandon's victory by a score of 18 to 6.

"The game was her-

alded as an elimination contest in which one of the other of the two was to surrender its chances for the county championship, neither team having up to that time lost a game this year.

Marshfield, with its years of success in defeating all teams of the county and with its recent victory over Eugene High School by a score of 24 to 0, was easily the dopester's favorite and invaded the Tigers' territory confident of adding further laurels, but the opening play was a decided upset to their plans and as the game progressed it was more and more apparent that the Bandon eleven was superior in every department.

"Through it all sat Coach Fasnacht on the sidelines, coolly watching every move and mentally tabulating the strength and weakness of each play as his team, in college style, demonstrated the superiority of the well-drilled plan of attack. To him is due the honor of developing the greatest football organization every perfected in Coos County." Us old-timers knew John Fasnacht well, as we remember that not only was he an administrator and coach at the high school for many years, but he served as manager of utilities for the City of Bandon, in the position we now know as "city manager."

The second photo is the home often referred to as the Kronenberg

house, as it survived the Fire of 1936 and was the long-time home of Mr. and Mrs. John L. (Ottilie) Kronenberg. For many years after the Fire, their son, George, and his wife, Marie, lived in the home. Last I knew it was owned by Terry and Joy Tiffany.

In the Jan. 17, 1929, Western World I saw an interesting item, which explained that Jack Kronenberg (who built the Wecoma Baths) and his mother, Mrs. O.K. Kronenberg, spent the day in Marshfield where Mrs. Kronenberg attended the fashion show and antique display given by the Marshfield Civic Club.

"The program was of unusual interest, according to Mrs. Kronenberg, and the display of beautiful antiques would have done credit to any city. Mrs. Kronenberg contributed a number of antique pieces to the display, among them the Book of Common Prayer which belonged to the Trinity church in New York and was thrown out by the British in 1776. It has been in possession of Mrs. Kronenberg's family on the paternal side since 1841."

Mrs. Kronenberg was the daughter of Captain Judah Parker, who founded Parkersburg.

Since the Kronenberg house (located at the top of Caroline Avenue) did not burn in the Fire, I am curious if Mrs. Kronenberg's granddaughter, Jean Kronenberg Rittenour, still has

possession of the Book of Common Prayer.

The third picture was taken in April of 1980 when members of the Bandon Police Department gathered at city hall for the retirement party of Officer Harry Franson. From left are Marc Johnson, Mike Trotter and Chief D. S. "Big Mac" MacDonald.

I hadn't heard from Lloyd Gabriel in quite a few months and was beginning to worry .... but I talked with John and Chele Gamble at the Wine Walk and they had just returned from Yakima, Wash., where they had visited Mr. Gabriel. He suffers from macular degeneration, but outside of that he is in great health and good spirits, considering that he is 101 and a half. He and his wife, Ruth, taught school here from 1955 until 1961, and today they have an apartment in an assisted living facility. Their address is 3808 Summitview Ave., Apt. 301, Yakima, Wash., 98902. I know they would love to hear from their former students. I also have an email address for them, but apparently they have not been able to access social media for some time ... and that is why I hadn't heard from them.

BANDON CHRISTIAN

Among my collection of treasures, I found a Coos County directory for school officers and teachers in Coos County for the years 1956-57 (the year I graduated from high school and had Mr. Gabriel as my teacher).

I was curious as to how much teachers and administrators made in those days. The yearly salary for Mr. Gabriel, who taught social studies, was $5,250; his wife, who was the homemaking teacher, made

Fedje, had died June 4 in Indian Wells, Calif., where she had moved several years ago to be near her daughter, Bettyrae Easley. Betty, who grew up in Buhl, Ida., was 94. During her years in Bandon she made many close friends, including Dennis and Nora Thomason, and was active in the Bandon Rotary Club.

Betty held a bachelor's and a master's degree in music from Boston University. In her retirement, she directed a number of dinner theatres to raise money for Rotary. These performances became a beloved event of the year at her favorite restaurant, Lord Bennett's.

The family has started a Memorial Music Scholarship in her honor at the local Rotary club. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made in Betty's name to Bandon Rotary Club, PO Box 2176, Bandon, OR 97411.

People have been asking me what is happening in Bandon on the Fourth of July, and so far this is what I've found on the local events calendar.

A parade, gathering near Dairy Queen, will start at 10 a.m., and wind its way through Old Town. Jan Hester is chair, and she can be contacted at 541297-9299 or tiger63@ peoplepc.com for an

application or more information.

The Port's annual cardboard boat races will start at noon at the boat launch, with registration at 11 a.m. For an application and the rules, go to info@ portofbandon.com.

GBA is sponsoring a Wine Walk, beginning at 5. Glasses are $10 at the port picnic shelter.

The fireworks display will be shot off at dusk (around 10 pm) from across the river, making the show visible from most places along the waterfront.

After nearly two years, an arrest has been made in the killing of a Coos Bay doctor, with the return of a secret indictment charging Reina Gabriela Jackson, with one count of murder in the second degree and two counts of second degree conspiracy to commit murder.

The charges pertain to the homicidal death of Dr Craig Jackson, which occurred on Aug. 2, 2021. She is the exwife of Dr. Jackson, who was a physician with Bay Clinic.

At that time, Dr. Jackson's wife, Yen Zhou, told police that two men entered their North Bend home in the early morning hours and after a physical altercation, they shot Dr. Jackson and fled.

A nationwide arrant for Reina Jackson's arrest was issued shortly thereafter. The Coos County District Attorney's office asked for the assistance of the

U.S. Marshal Service and the U.S. Attorney's Office in locating and arresting Reina Jackson as it was believed she was residing in her home nation of Guatemala.

On June 14, 2023, Reina Jackson was arrested by the US Marshal Service in Atlanta, Ga., after Mrs. Jackson, apparently unaware of the arrest warrant, had decided to return to the United States for some reason. She was arrested when she entered the country that day.

John Gunther recently wrote a neat article for The World about the fact that the Bandon girls track team, winners of the Class 2A state championship, also ranked first with the highest GPA among programs in the 2A division, at 3.93. Bandon's boys golf team finished fourth at state and were fifth for Class 3A/2A/1A with a 3.66 group GPA. The Tigers boys basketball team finished third for Class 2A in the classroom, the highest placing for any winter program in the area, according to Gunther, with a 3.64 GPA. Bandon Girls basketball had a combined GPA of 3.56., and the girls golf team was eighth among Class4A/3A,/2A/1A at 3.79. The boys track and field had a combined GPA of 3.36. The Bandon/Pacific softball team had a combined GPA of 3.10, while the Bandon/Pacific baseball team had a 3.08 GPA.

Oregon Charter Academy presents 2023 graduates

The Fifth Street Chess Tournament was June 24. All ages and all skill levels were invited for some fun chess as well as outdoor. Badminton, squirt guns and other fun games were available for between rounds.

Frank Morse earned opportunity to compete in the National Open at the Las Vegas International Chess Festival June 14 through the 18, where 1,200 people from around the world came to compete. He had a rough start with a loss in his first round held in the evening.

Coach Nancy Keller may have worn him out as they had explored Las Vegas that day. He recovered in round 2 and made less mistakes for the rest of the tournament. It came down to positional advantag-

es rather than material imbalances in his later games. He won four out of seven games in the Under 1300 section and vows to return and do better. He did get some prizes as winning the last round earned him the tournament playing board to bring home and winning more than half his games earned him a $50 gift certificate for the chess store.

Meanwhile, Coquille Chess Club alumni Aaron Grabinsky was in Czech Republic and competed in his first of five European Chess Tournament in an attempt to earn the coveted grandmaster title. If he succeeds, he could the second grandmaster in U.S. history to come from Oregon and he will join the 105 current grandmasters in the United States.

Unfortunately, a loss in his third game shuffled him to into the lower rated player bracket and despite 6.5 points out of 9, he did not earn his second grandmaster norm (he needs three) or the international rating of 2,500. He did beat the #1 player in Italy and tied with the #9 player in Argentina. Grabinsky is currently ranked No. 1746 in the world.

On June 10, Oregon Charter Academy (ORCA) honored its 2023 class of graduating students at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem. Of the nearly 260 graduating students, four are from Coos County cities of Bandon, Coos Bay and North Bend.

Oregon Charter Academy is the state’s first online school, established 18 years ago as Oregon Connections Academy. The tuition-free virtual public charter school became independent in 2020 to better serve K-12 students throughout Oregon with advanced technology and customizable approaches to a standards-based curriculum.

“Oregon Charter Academy has given

me the confidence and knowledge to pursue my career in veterinary medicine after graduation,” began Ingrid Peterson, ORCA senior. “The teachers, the events, and my friends have shaped me into the person I am today. Thank you, ORCA!!”

Some of the area students who received diplomas included: Chloe Bock of Bandon (Chloe participated in the school’s ASCEND career and technical education program and received cumulative honor roll recognition) and Justin Rohrer of North Bend (Justin received cumulative honor roll recognition).

“As we say goodbye to our graduates, our hearts fill with joy and pride. We are confident that the solid foundation

they built at Oregon Charter Academy has prepared them for the next phase of their lives," said Allison Galvin, executive director, ORCA. "To the diligent and dedicated Oregon Charter Academy students, I extend my warmest congratulations. On behalf of the entire staff, we wish you all the best in your future endeavors!”

Graduating students experienced an individualized, dynamic and responsive curriculum that has prepared them for college and careers. Options like the career and technical education program (ASCEND), the college readiness program (AVID), and other social opportunities have given students a head start.

Dear Abby Abigail Van Buren

Dear Abby:

I am a 29-year-old housewife with a loving husband, a caring mother and equally supportive in-laws. I'm writing because I feel useless. I don't even have a hobby I'm good at. Although I like to play music, draw and play with cats, I don't think I'm good at any of them, despite others telling me otherwise. My friends and family are better off than I am. My friend is participating in a skating competition, my brother is working toward becoming an electrician, and my husband's first cousin is an illustrator whose book recently got published. Because of this, I have developed low self-esteem and argue with those around me.

I can't afford college because I have no job. I tried applying for a few only to be turned down. Abby, I haven't accomplished anything special. All I want is to be good at SOMETHING, but I'm afraid it will blow up in my face. I can't accept criticism.

I'm at a loss about what to do. I'm ready to give up on everything. Why should I keep trying when I know I will get the same bad results?

TALENTLESS IN OHIO

DEAR TALENTLESS:

There are many kinds of success beyond the monetary or winning prizes. As an unemployed housewife with time on your hands, why not put some of it to use by volunteering in your community? Many places would be glad to have you. The library, schools, senior centers, veterinarian's offices or animal rescues would welcome someone. Please try it. If you do, you may find you have talents you're unaware of. An added benefit will be that the more you do, the higher your level of self-esteem will become.

My 12-year-old grandson, "Adam," doesn't talk to me. He converses with other adults, but when I walk into a room and say hi, he pretends he doesn't hear me. He does not

answer questions that I ask and will sit on the floor rather than at the other end of a large sofa where I am. He lives pretty far away, so I take small gifts when I visit every two to three months. He does come over with a smile when I am handing them out, but he never comments or says thank you. His younger brother and I get along great, so I do not pressure Adam. When I leave, I give him a quick hug and tell him I love him. The phone is useless. He's obviously miserable when my daughter insists he speak with me. I send a short text once a month or so so he knows I care. I don't feel comfortable mentioning this to his parents, as his dad is pretty hard on him. Any suggestions?
IN
Yes. Adam's behavior is rude and disrespectful, but it's perhaps not his fault. I am surprised his parents haven't noticed this. Because you feel his father might be heavy-handed, mention it to his mother and ask her to find out what the problem is with Adam because, clearly, there is one.

As I have mentioned before, I like stories, so let me share another true one with you.

Eleven year old Preston Sharp was with his mom at the cemetery, visiting and decorating his grandfather’s grave, who was a veteran. As he looked around, he realized that not every veteran had a flag at his marker, and that disappointed and made Preston angry. Several hours later, he was still harping on it. His mom said, “Son, if you are going to complain about something, you either have to do something about it or let it go.”

Next thing she knew, Preston was taking odd jobs and soliciting

donations to buy flags and flowers for every veteran in his grandpa’s cemetery. And when that cemetery was covered, he moved onto another, and then another. In his first two years, some 23,000 graves were decorated. Now when word gets out Preston will be at a cemetery, a lot of folks feel compelled to join in. It is a movement of young and old, of those who served themselves and those who are so grateful they did, all led by this little pied piper of patriotism who saw an injustice and decided to do something about it.

What that young man’s actions

represent is the something that is special in each and every one of us. We have all have the ability to make a difference. We have to be aware of what that talent is and more importantly step up to use it. Maybe at school or work or the food bank or in the Chamber. That’s our challenge as individuals and a community. And if we, together, decide to make that difference, I have no doubt that our Oregon Coast, will have an excellent future. It’s in your hands.
