North Bend Community Scholarship Fund celebrates 30th anniversary of major donation Support for students remains strong

The North Bend Community Scholarship Fund is still helping students pursue their career goals after providing scholarships for more than 30 years. Since its inception in 1990, the scholarship fund has given out a total of about $3.8 million in scholarships to North Bend graduates.

This year, founding board member Pat Choat Pierce, wanted to share the story behind a very important donation that impacted the organization tremendously. In 1993, Pauline Perry became a major donor by gifting the scholarship fund $700,000 in real estate.

Choat Pierce reflected on the woman who generously gave back to her community on the 30th anniversary of the donation. She described

And the winner is… Fifth graders showcase healthy recipes in future chef challenge

The World Students are being encouraged to make healthy food choices at school and beyond. What better way to promote healthy eating than having kids share their favorite healthy recipes?

Fifth graders from across the Coos Bay School District recently created and submitted their own original recipes for the Sodexo sponsored future chef challenge. Sodexo’s National Future Chefs Challenge has encouraged thousands of elementary students across North America to learn more about nutrition, healthy food choices, cooking techniques and presentation by participating in a good-natured cooking competition for more than a decade.

The Coos Bay School District

participated in the challenge this year with director of nutrition services, Janine Lee, and Sodexo administrative assistant, Candice Cabudol. The nutrition staff said the future chef challenge was a fun way for the students to become more capable in the kitchen.

“It helps to foster growth and community with students to be more comfortable cooking healthy food,” said Director of Nutrition Services Janine Leep.

“It also fosters a little more respect between students and those who prepare their meals everyday – to know what goes into it. It’s not as easy as they think.”

Out of nearly 30 submissions, four students were selected to showcase their recipes in front of

Bandon art gallery reopens after pandemic closure

BREE LAUGHLIN

The World Riverside Studio and Art Gallery is back showcasing local artists with an in-house custom frame shop after being closed for three years due to the pandemic.

Stepping into the gallery just north of Old Town Bandon, customers are greeted with a bright and open creative space adorned with warm and colorful wall hangings, including paintings and photography, and 3-D art displays including pottery, woodwork and fabric and jewelry.

Nearly all of the art inside the gallery was created by artists in Coos County – a feature that sets them apart from other gal-

leries in the area, as well as a frame studio that features custom, refurbished and vintage frames.

Several local artists gathered together during the last weekend in March for a reception to celebrate the reopening of Riverside Studio and Art Gallery.

John Bealey has a longtime history with art, including teaching elementary and high school students. He also helped open the pottery studio at the Coquille Valley Art Center. Bealey has owned Riverside

“The students were super excited and was really fun to stand back and watch them,” Leep said.

Community volunteer judges Casey McCord, Donna Koski and Aimee Blevins had the task to select a winner from the group of talented finalists. The recipes are judged each year on taste, healthiness, kid friendliness, originality, ease of preparation, plate presentation and student chef presentations to the judges.

While it was difficult to choose just one, young chef Charlotte Aurdahl was pronounced the winner with her recipe for tiny apple balls.

“When Charlotte wheeled her cart up and presented her stuff to the judges, she had

Winter Waters Gets Oregon-Grown Seaweed Onto Local Menus

A series of dining events in Portland and along the Oregon Coast put sea vegetables front and center, shining a light on bottlenecks and opportunities for Oregon’s seafare supply chain.

In February, the Winter Waters campaign, a dining event series designed to introduce Oregon restaurant-goers to locally grown seaweed, made a bigger splash than the organizers anticipated.

“We had so much more interest in Winter Waters than we could have imagined,” says Kristen Penner, co-founder of the campaign and food systems value chain coordinator with Oregon Coast Visitors Association. “The series and team did a fantastic job creating market opportunities for producers in the Oregon seafare economy, building distribution pipelines and rallying new buyers.”

Penner teamed up with Alanna Kieffer of Oregon Seaweed and Rachelle Hacmac of Blue Evolution to create the series, one of the biggest food collaborations to ever take place between Portland and the coast. Thirty chefs and restaurant partners in Portland and along the coast, from Astoria to Newport, educated diners about how to prepare sea vegetables and created seaweed-forward specials, from crudo and cocktails to ramen and burgers.

One of Oregon Seaweed’s biggest challenges has been consumer education about how to cook their Oregon-grown Pacific Dulse, a deep purple, nutrient-packed seaweed that takes on a different flavor profile depending on how it’s prepared.

“It’s like a land vegetable,” Kieffer says. “There are going to be ways that people cook it and love it, and some ways that they won’t. The chefs participating in Winter Waters were remarkable at showing people creative ways to cook with seaweed.”

As Oregon Seaweed was breaking into the Portland market, the company would deliver small orders of dulse to restaurants, one at a time. It was an inefficient use of staff time

and had a high carbon footprint.

Luckily, Keiffer notes, they were able to contract with North Coast Commons, which provides delivery service for Oregon Coast farmers, ranchers, fishers, and makers of locallysourced specialty foods to reach customers along the coast and in Portland. “Flying Fish was our first retail store in Portland, and we are excited that you will soon be able to pick up our Oregon Seaweed products at New Seasons across Portland,” Keiffer says. The series will culminate with the Winter Waters Finale, Sunday, April 2, 4 to 8 p.m. at The Salmonberry restaurant in Wheeler. Salmonberry chef Charles Lutka is inviting chefs Maylin Chavez and Trever Gilbert into the kitchen to collaborate on Mexican-inspired dishes that celebrate local seafood and sea vegetables.

No one wants to collide with a deer

A deer stands paralyzed in the middle of a mountain highway, stunned by the lights and deafening roar of an 18-wheeler barreling toward it. At the last second, the deer leaps back into the forest.

This time, the deer and the trucker avoid a fatal collision, but this stretch of Interstate-5 in southern Oregon is a known killing field for wildlife and dangerous for motorists. The highway cuts through a critical connection for wildlife moving between two mountain ranges and home to the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, which is the only national monument specifically established for the protection of its rich biodiversity.

In this country, according to Federal Highway Administration estimates, 1-2 million motor vehicles crash into large animals such as deer each year.

“These wildlife-vehicle collisions cause approximately 200 human deaths, 26,000 injuries and at least $8 billion in property damage and other costs.” According to The Pew Trust.

In Oregon alone, the Oregon Department of Transportation records approximately 7,000 large-animal vehicle deaths annually. Each one involving deer averages $6,617 for emergency response, towing, repairs and medical expenses.

Sometimes, a vehicle

hits a deer and the animal disappears, so that many injured animals die unseen. The roadkill deaths of smaller species are also never recorded. Still more animals, from frogs and salamanders to rare species like marten and fisher, to top predators like cougars, are prevented from moving freely by the lights, noise and physical barrier of major highways. This disrupts the lives of wildlife and prevents genetic interchange among their populations.

In Oregon in 2021, a group of local environmentalists, hunters, scientists, and state and federal agency staffers came together to do something about the problem: They formed the Southern Oregon Wildlife Crossing Coalition and started gathering data.

They learned that more than 17,000

vehicles travel daily on I-5 between the town of Ashland and the California border, and that significant portions of this stretch of highway are in the state’s high-risk “red zones” for wildlife-car collisions. The coalition decided that it would work to reduce collisions and help animals move freely by promoting the construction of crossings both under and over and under the freeway.

In recent years, wildlife crossings have gained increasing attention and support, with perhaps the most famous success story in Canada. There, 22 wildlife underpasses and two overpasses in Banff National Park reduced roadkill by 80 percent.

In Washington state, an ambitious effort is underway to reconnect habitat in the Cascades by establishing safe wildlife crossings under and over Interstate 90.

Guest Column

This week, we want to highlight the Coos County Sheriff’s Office Civil Division

Guest Article

The Coos County Sheriff’s Office Civil Division is staffed by three members. Chief Civil Deputy T. Hansen, Deputy J. Owens, and Office Specialist C. Cade. It is important to note that these three office members perform ALL the duties you see below for EVERY agency in the County. (North Bend, Coos Bay, Bandon, Lakeside, Myrtle Point, Powers, Coquille, and County Jurisdictions)

• Serve Subpoenas on behalf of the District Attorney, Department of Justice, Child Support, Juvenile Department, Law Firms, and many others, including civilians with private court cases being held.

• Serve Eviction papers and remove persons from addresses as per court order.

• Serve Restraining Orders, and if requested by the courts, move

the respondent out of an address. May also stand by to transfer custody of a child by court order. (We cannot do “civil standbys” without a court order)

• Serve Divorce papers, Child Custody, Summons, and Petition.

• Small Claims, Summons and Complaints, Writ of Garnishment, and other documents relating to money awards and judgments.

• Perform Foreclosed Real and Personal Property Sales and seize money and property from local businesses per court orders.

• Assist the public with information regarding Civil Process (but not give legal advice)

• Assist Patrol and investigations

We are very thankful for the difficult job the Sheriff’s Office Civil Department performs. They go above and beyond daily to care for each person they serve while providing top-notch services to Coos County.

Eleven large wildlife crossing structures are completed, with a planned total of 26 large ones and many smaller ones to come. The most well known is near Snoqualmie Pass, where a $6 million overpass has been readily accepted by elk and deer, virtually eliminating wildlife-vehicle collisions in the fenced project area.

Meanwhile, in southern California, the largest wildlife crossing in the world is scheduled for completion by 2025.

The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing will span the 10-lane, 101 Freeway, allowing the reconnection of small, isolated populations of cougars in the Santa Susana Mountains to the north and the Santa Monica Mountains to the south.

Other major wildlife crossing projects are underway throughout the West, including

Wyoming, Montana and Colorado.

Highway projects are always expensive and complex, and to get them done requires collaboration among diverse, often disagreeing groups. In the case of southern Oregon’s coalition, our members include the Bureau of Land Management and activist environmental groups; the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and hunting and fishing organizations; academics from Southern Oregon University and engineers from the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Though we may have differing priorities, we all offer our expertise to the shared goal of improving wildlife crossings over “our” stretch of I-5. Together, we have also raised enough money from public and private sources to finance a feasibility

study of eight possible over- and under-crossings, and we’re working closely with the state to identify the highest priority sites.

It is our hope that our carefully documented proposals will attract the federal highway funds required to make these crossings a reality.

In a time of social and political polarization, it is immensely heartening to work on a project that brings together wildly different interests. Wildlife crossings, I have found, bridge not only divisions on the landscape but divisions in our communities as well.

June 18, 1931 – March 19, 2023

Melvin Rosema, born June 18, 1931, gladly went home to Jesus on Sunday, March 19, 2023. Mel was a loving son, brother, husband, and father. A man of few words, he served all around him with kindness and gentleness. Even through much suffering he remained a gentleman and exhibited dignity.

Mel was born in Grandville, Michigan and later served during the Korean War as a Navy cook. Afterward, Mel completed his bachelor’s degree in psychology

from San Francisco State. Most of his career was at the California Employment Development Department with Job Corps, where he helped many challenged teens learn job skills that led to gainful employment. At his retirement dinner, one coworker said he’d never heard Mel speak a bad word about anyone. Very active in church through the years, especially at Stockton Covenant Church, Mel served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and choir/quartet member. He had a

beautiful tenor voice even up to age 90 and loved singing in the Naval Choir, community chorales, and with his family. A lover of beauty, he grew striking roses and took up watercolor painting in his 70s. Even through 20 years of dementia, Mel delighted in praising the goodness of his Savior, “the living God”.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Agnes and Thys; daughter, Melanie; sister, Ruth; beloved wife of 68 years, Perle; brother, Rog; and sister-in-law, Fran.

have collectively decided that this is not an environment where we can continue our work. The level of mistrust and deceit which started with the Executive Committee over the last few months, and has continued with the ascension of Melissa Cribbins to the CEO position, has created an intolerable, hostile place to work. We care deeply about the work we have done and had planned to do for our patients and our community. Yet we face retaliation for being whistleblowers in addressing violations of Federal laws and regulations, as well as being honest about the

behavior of those on the Board.

"We have been treated as insignificant and criminals, not being given any information on any changes, such as learning of Melissa Cribbins in the same email as the rest of the staff (after Ann Kellogg was told to be interim CEO). We were dismissed by the Executive Committee in January when we told them to contact HRSA (Health Resources Services Administration), as required, and instead were admonished. You are talking to HRSA now only because we finally reached out while the board has squandered many thousands of dollars for lawyers to

research whether this needed to be done or not. This is money we do not have. We have been asked by the Executive Committee to look the other way on our compliance and internal policies so that issues are done to their liking, and they have retaliated in response to our upholding of the standards. We have tried to bring this to the board's attention, only to have it fall on deaf ears.

"We have experienced a moral injury with the removal of our experienced and compassionate CEO (referring to Linda Maxon). We understand that you believe that you had no choice, but what you had was an

incorrect description of the situation. The general board was used to get the outcome that they wanted, and they got it," said the letter, referring to at last one board member with a vendetta "to get Linda."

"Yet, you are unaware how critical this role is for our health center. You placed an inexperienced and lazy person into the role, who is also missing the deep love for our staff and our mission, and refuses to interact with her leadership team unless she needs something. To talk to the Board is not the job - it is running a health center. Then to find out you are paying her $300 an hour

Dear Abby Abigail Van Buren By

My son is in a relationship with "Cheryl." They live together. Cheryl has a daughter and is demanding that I treat the girl as one of my granddaughters. I have bought birthday presents, Christmas gifts and generally spend the same amount on all the kids. But I have been told that Cheryl doesn't like what I buy her daughter and tosses the clothes at one of my other granddaughters who lives there and says, "Here! YOU take it. It's ugly!"

I know she talks bad about me to my son, and so does her mother. Interestingly, Cheryl's mother doesn't have to buy anything for my granddaughters on their birthdays or Christmas. I'm frustrated because I'm not allowed to have my granddaughters spend the night with me without being told that I must include her daughter. My granddaughters prefer it'd be just them and me.

Am I wrong in feeling that I shouldn't have to take Cheryl's daughter every time my granddaughters want to spend the night with me?

Dear Abby: — GRANDKID DILEMMA

DEAR DILEMMA:

No, you are not wrong. Is Cheryl's mother also being blackmailed into hosting your granddaughters every time her grandchild stays the night with her? If the answer is no, the same should be true for you. It's time for a serious private discussion with your son, because it doesn't seem right that he and his girlfriend have an automatic date night every time his daughters want to spend some quality time with Granny. It would be more equitable if you took Cheryl's daughter PART of the time instead of every time.

Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Contact Dear Abby at www.DearAbby.com or P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, CA 90069.

I have a longtime friend, "Eve," whose husband just died at 55. She is, of course, devastated. To combat her grief and loneliness, she's going out every day or night with dozens of girlfriends. This is good because she's doing all kinds of new sports and activities and filling her time with interesting people and events. The problem is, she has developed a close relationship with "Anne." Anne did some unbelievably mean, cruel things to me (and others) when she hired me for a short job, and I saw how Machiavellian she really is. I know Eve will one day have a party or some other gathering and invite the two of us with others. I cannot bear to see Anne ever again.

I don't want to tell Eve about my terrible encounters with Anne. But I'm certain she is vulnerable right now in her profound grief, and I'm also certain Anne is using her. Without going into more detail, what would you do?

Dear Abby: — CORNERED IN COLORADO

DEAR CORNERED:

I would tell Eve about my unpleasant experience with Anne. I would also mention my concern that she is emotionally vulnerable right now, and that in your experience, Anne was extremely manipulative, and she should watch her back. If she asks for specifics, I would give her chapter and verse. In the event that you are subsequently invited to a gathering where Anne will be present, give your regrets.

Now that we have over half of Oregon legislators confirmed to attend we have shifted our registration to SignUpGenius, so you can pick the legislator closest to you. If you previously registered, please register via SignUpGenius as well to commit to the times you are available. Your voice matters, don’t miss out on this important opportunity to make an impact. Team OCD will share an Advocacy Day Resource Packet with everything you need to prepare, whether you’ve done this 1000 times or you are brand new to advocacy!

Children’s Advocacy Day Agenda – Our event is virtual and now scheduled from 12:30 pm – 4:15 pm. 12:30 pm – 12:45 pm, Welcome! What’s on the Children’s Agenda Overview with Policy & Advocacy Director Ivy Major-McDowall. 12:45 pm – 4:15 pm, Individual legislator meetings. Legislator meetings are not 1:1 conversations, but rather group conversations with community members and a trained advocacy lead to facilitate and support. Meetings will begin 15 minutes prior to the selected time. This will allow participants to connect with Advocacy Day Leads to ask any questions and understand the meeting flow before the legislator logs on to the Zoom meeting.
