Siuslaw students return from MarketingJAM SIUSLAW HIGH SCHOOL STAFF

Students from the Business Careers in Technical Education (CTE) program at Siuslaw High School took part in the 2024 MarketingJAM. This event was held from January 26th to 28th at Spark at Booth-Kelly in Springfield, Oregon. At MarketingJAM, CTE business students are given a realworld marketing scenario for a local business. They create a strategy to increase the firm’s profile, promote, and even rebrand. Then they present their marketing campaign to a panel of judges made up from industry professionals. This marketing contest was organized by Connected Lane

County, exemplifies the synergy of community, education, and industry. Eddie Mielke, a coach from Siuslaw High School, praised the event: “This competition in business and marketing couldn’t be more relevant and useful!” Siuslaw fielded several teams, including Team Siuslaw (Seniors Team), composed of Jordan Strickland, Quinn Hammond, Sean Martinez, Gabe Whitney, and Ethan Moore. These students had previously achieved ‘Best in Show’ in the 2023 competition. “The

With no seasonal end in sight for rainfall and half a winter remaining, the Florence Emergency Cold Weather Shelter board continues to look for a suitable location where supplies can be left ready to set up. Just before the last cold snap arrived, the word had not gotten out that a shelter location was available. Linda Stent said low numbers were likely due to the fact that the word hadn’t got around that a temporary shelter had been set up. While the Florence Unitarian Universalist Fellowship hall at 87738 Highway 101 is likely to host the shelter if temperatures drop again, the shelter could really use a steady location. Stent said she has been attempting to contact the owners of the former Sears Store in Florence. She said that volunteers have to pack a lot of supplies and equipment into, and out of, temporary warming center locations. She said the items then have to be stored at another location. “We would like to have a spot where we can bring stuff in, set it up and leave it,” she said. Anyone with information about a large building with electricity that may be used as a temporary warming shelter can contact Stent at 541-844-5573. More information about the shelter and how to help can be found at https://www.florenceemergencycoldweathershelter.com/

Ann Rule. For the last seven years, the event has been sponsored by Florence Kiwanis Club. Pearson urged people to check out the social media pages of the groups, who posted endearing reviews of Florence and their time here. She said much of the advertising for the event came from the artist themselves via their social media. “All but one are active on Facebook,” she said. FACE’s next community event will be its yard sale at the Florence Entertainment Center on March 23. she said signups will be available in late February.

As part of this effort, LCHSD will be taking extra steps to ensure youth who are experiencing homelessness are captured in the 2024 PIT Count. A broader definition of homelessness will be used to count youth on the local level, which includes those who are unstably housed or couch surfing. These efforts include pop-up magnet events on the day of the count to engage with youth to complete a survey. Just as with the broader count, these surveys will be cross-referenced with our HBNL and, if the young

This year’s youth PIT Count strategies have been vetted and approved through the YHDP Youth Executive committee. The full report from the PIT Count will be made available in the Spring, following final submission to HUD.

“I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend.” — Thomas Jefferson (1800)

LETTERS Was just reading the long article in our paper about the proposed charter school in Florence. It seems like what is wanted by a few is a rightwing school that teaches both religious and political curriculum. I find there is no place in our community for such an institution unless it is funded by private money. More importantly I am completely against using property owners tax monies to support a charter school without us having a vote on it. Win Jolley Florence

Our city is built on sand at sea level. As temperatures rise, as they have been consistently doing, will there be less rainfall to refill our aquifer? Will saltwater intrude into our aquifer as sea levels rise, contaminating our groundwater? Global Warming

Dear community….

By TONY REED Associate Editor

An older gentleman came to my office a couple weeks ago to tell me of a project he’s wanted to see built in Florence. While his little rescue dog Toby climbed around on my lap, Chip Asplund told me of his late wife Melody Joy, who died of COPD complications five years ago. He shared that he moved with her from Arizona to the Oregon Coast because it was easier for her to breathe here. He said her favorite thing to do

was to take their dogs to the Singing Pines Dog Park. Chip recalled a coastal trip with his wife and two dogs in the rain but found it tough to find outdoor places for the dogs to safely play and relieve themselves. After they settled in Florence, she was too sick to be out in the rain, so she sat in the car while Chip went out in the park with the dogs. “We need a rain shelter,” he said, taking out printed ads for covered gazebo kits and other structures. He said some of the cheapest gazebo kits were in the $15,000 range, but suggested erecting one similar to the cover at Exploding Whale Memorial Park. The shelter could cover the dog park entrance and overlap both the large and small dog sections so owners could stay dry while tossing balls and letting dogs play. He suggested several fundraising options, from selling

inscribed bricks at the site to city donation jars. He also showed me a receipt for $1,000, dated June 2019, for his contribution to the proposed project. Also in his wallet were two photos of his late wife, both of which he showed me at different points during our discussion. He remarked that he’d wanted to build a sort of Taj Majal for his late wife but his voice cracked when he made the next request. His only ask was to have some sort of memorial placed at the site reading, “To dog lovers of Florence, in memory of my wife, Melody Joy. She loved all her dogs, including me.” His genuine, undying love for his late wife and his determination to see something created in her memory tugged on my heart as I drove back to my office. Of course, I found myself wanting to

As an individual I can see photo evidence of glaciers eroding and and have watched worldwide and witnessed extreme changes to our environment in the past years which has included both extreme heat, rainfall and winter conditions. During the past few years on the West Coast we have experienced major fires due to drought and most recently in Oregon an ice storm. help, but was unsure how to start. I called Public Works Director Mike Miller, who recalled the community effort that funded repairs and improvements at the park in 2019, including wood chips, a paved entry and more. He said such projects come up from time to time and a pocket park on 18th Street was recently done in a similar manner. He said it can be done, but the city would have to handle priority projects first. He estimated that after Chip’s donation, about $9,000 would still be needed to build a rain shelter there. Miller said monetary donations can be made directly to the city, if earmarked for the Dog Park rain shelter, and City Staff could collaborate with any volunteers. As the editor of your local paper, I cannot manage such a project but I can share the vision and report on any progress as it comes to fruition. Perhaps someone else here has those connections and can help. Perhaps your club or group would like to help the city raise the barn, as it were. I’m sure this can happen soon with community support. Then maybe, just maybe, part of Chip’s donation can be used for that small memorial to his wife that will remain forever at the dog park she loved so much.

The rest of Siuslaw participants were Team Bonesaw, Delylah Hammond (senior), Colton Johnson (sophomore), Lily Clemons (freshman), and Team Little Man Dan, consisting of freshman students Cayden Knapp, Mykah Knabe, and Joshua Honza. Siuslaw’s coaching and chaperone team included Eddie Mielke, Bill Shaw, Robin Moses-Mielke, Amber Clemons, and Donna Shaw. The challenge kicked off at Siuslaw High School with teams choosing and researching a company from a provided list. These firms were Lane Workforce Partnerships, Springfield Education Foundation, City Club of Eugene, and Positive Community Kitchen. The teams then worked through the weekend at SPARK at Booth-Kelly to develop their marketing plans. During this time, students got the opportunity to work with industry professionals from the Eugene/Springfield area as mentors, including Becky-Joe Samples, marketing director at Lane Connected, and Andrew Brown, director of sales for the Eugene Emeralds. At the end of Saturday’s work session at Spark, students refreshed at a Mongolian Grill for dinner; then, they were off to overnight work session at a hotel in Eugene/Springfield prompting Team Siuslaw member Ethan Moore’s statement, “Rocking it out with our team overnight is the best school field trip!” Team Siuslaw focused on a website redesign for City Club of Eugene, Team Bonesaw created a social media campaign for Positive Community Kitchen while Team Little Man Dan worked on rebranding and logo design for Springfield Education Foundation. The event concluded with presentations and awards. “I liked seeing how other teams treated the same challenges as us, not just Siuslaw teams but the other schools!” said Team Siuslaw member Gabe Whitney. Creswell High School won ‘Best in Show’ for 2024, while Team Siuslaw (Seniors), last year’s champions, were recognized with the “Most Knowledgeable” award. Bingo fundraiser supports local children in arts

By BREE LAUGHLIN Country Media

ART WALK BY ALAN HUCK:

“Joy”

The goal of these articles is to inform the public about the many unique visual arts in Florence, and the many stories they have to tell. A strange thing happened to me when I was walking past the Siuslaw Public Library. A voice called out to me. A gentle voice said, “Hey you! Over here!” The voice was coming from a sculpture of a woman. Now you may be thinking that I would be a good candidate for the Florence Public Health Services. The sculpture was not verbally talking, but was using a visual voice. All art has its own voice and story to tell. Understanding art is learning to see and, like verbal communication, it must be learned. Looking at art is much like a good detective story. All the clues are here to solve the mystery. To find these clues, you will need a few things from your detective kit. You will need determination, time, sensitivity, patience, imagination, an open mind, and most important, your own life experiences. With these, you are ready to solve the mystery. What story is this sculpture trying to tell? At the base of the sculpture is a plaque that reads, “Joy,

created by Mack Holman of Gardiner, Oregon, dedicated in June 22, 2013”. Mack Holman is a sculptor and owner of the Tsunami Gallery in Gardiner, Oregon. His sculptures are realistic and straight forward. “Joy” is life size, and appears to be in her 30’s. The surface looks weather-beaten, which makes her look much older. As you walk around her, you see the surface colors change with the light. Joy has that Oregon pioneer look, hard working, determined, practical. She is coming from the library. A cool, hard wind blows her hair back. Joy clutches an open book against her heavy coat. Joy’s story is told in her facial expression. The artist has captured a moment in time. What has she just read to take her to a different place and time? “Joy” celebrates life and the power of books. Joy’s story encourages you to visit our unique library, and to look at all art in a new way. Joy’s story does not stop here. It continues with your participation in her story. Alan Huck, Local Artist and Art Teacher Florence, Oregon

Pet of the Week

BINGO! It’s what everyone will want to shout out at the C.R.O.W. fundraiser on Feb. 17 at the Three Rivers Casino and Resort event center. While not everyone at the event may have the chance to win a game – everyone will be able to say they supported local children participating in the arts. Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshops, also known as C.R.O.W., has a mission to inspire, educate, and empower local youth through professional caliber arts education and performance opportunities. All proceeds from the 2024 C.R.O.W. Bingo Fundraiser go directly toward their programs. Organizers said the event is sure to be total blast. “We decided we wanted to break away from a traditional auction format and create an event that is fun and people can play games and laugh. We themed it to coincide with our upcoming musical, ‘Newsies,” said Melanie Heard, C.R.O.W.’s Artistic Director. In addition to many fastpaced Bingo games with prizes, the event will feature a 50/50 raffle, a wheel spin game for alcohol, and a dessert auction. There will even be a Bingo grand prize. In addition to the fun and games, an “Italian Feast” dinner will be included, plus a no-host bar for those over 21. This event is for adults only, ages 18 plus. Costumes are not required, but encouraged.

Art director Heard said she was surprised and amused at how many people really got into the Bingo games, during the C.R.O.W. fundraiser last year. “I think it’s funny to watch how into the games the people get. They’ve got their dauber. They’ve got their boards all laid out – and they are focused,” she said. “It’s funny and cute at the same time. But then again, the prizes are really good, so I can fully understand why they would want to win,” Heard said. The CROW Director said she is really looking forward to seeing people have a great time at the event, but she is also hoping they will come out in full force to support C.R.O.W. and their mission. This is the core fundraiser for the nonprofit’s programming throughout the year. The funding is much needed, Heard said. “This is what makes the entire program available and accessible for our local kids,” she said. It also helps C.R.O.W. maintain their unique vision to keep their mainstage theatre shows totally free for kids to participate. This is not common for community youth theaters, Heard said. Parents around the nation often have to fit the bill for hundreds of dollars for costumes and other fees in order to watch their children perform high-quality art programs on stage. But local C.R.O.W. organizers want to make the arts accessible to all children.

PRINCESS PERIWINKLE

Periwinkle was adopted from OCHS as a kitten and then arrived back at the shelter after her owner passed away. She lived peacefully with a cat in her previous home but prefers cats that will give her the space required by a princess. She enjoys treats, playing with toys, and napping in the sun. Stop by the shelter or apply online if you’d like to add this royal feline to your family!

New state audit stresses patient protection, public trust STAFF REPORT Country Media, Inc.

The Oregon Medical Board (OMB) can do more to ensure it disciplines health care professionals fairly and consistently, according to a new audit released today by the Oregon Audits Division. OMB regulates health care professionals in the state of Oregon under Oregon’s Medical Practice Act. The primary mechanism by which this happens is licensing health care professionals, investigating complaints, and disciplining any licensees who violate the Act. The board receives between 700 and 800 complaints each year. Auditors found many opportunities for the board to better standardize its disciplinary process to ensure all licensees are treated consistently and equitably. Auditors did not review individual complaints or make

judgment calls on their results but focused on complaint outcomes on a systemic level.

When it comes to regulations that affect public health, people need to have confidence that those rules are being implemented equitably and effectively.”

OMB chart

Ensuring consistency can be tricky. Medical complaint cases are often complex with unique circumstances that affect the outcome. Two allegations may appear to be similar but have entirely different outcomes based on the details of each case. For instance, say two patients encounter similar complications with a specific type of surgery. One patient was already in a poor state of health before the surgery. The other patient was in good health, but had a surgeon who lacked experience, or had a prior history of negligence in patient care. This could result in very different board decisions for each physician. However, it’s important OMB be consistent and

equitable in its regulation of health care professionals to protect patients — as well as providers — and maintain public trust. “Regulations are often talked about as rules to follow to protect people who receive services,” Oregon Audits Director Kip Memmott said. “But effective regulation also protects those providing the services. When it comes to regulations that affect public health, people need to have confidence that those rules are being implemented equitably and effectively.” In 2021, the Centers for Disease Control officially declared racism a serious public health threat. Racism

affects an individual’s ability to obtain housing, education, employment, and wealth — factors which experts refer to as the social determinants of health. Racial and ethnic minority populations experience higher rates of poor health and disease in a range of health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, asthma, and heart disease. These disparities persist even when controlling for socioeconomic and other factors, such as income and the quality of health insurance coverage. If licensees are disciplined inequitably, especially as a result of discrimination or even unconscious bias, it can

Hillsboro Quilt Artist to Present Guild Program, Workshop Pattern and fabric designer Karen Walker of Hillsboro will present a “trunk show” at a meeting on Thursday, February 8. This Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild (OCQG) meeting will be in Atonement Lutheran Church’s Fellowship Hall, 2315 North Coast Highway in Newport. “Table walk,” which offers the opportunity to see and participate in various guild activities, begins at 12:30 p.m.; the general meeting starts at 1 p.m. The public is welcome to attend the meeting at no charge. In Walker’s program, “Piecing Tiny Pieces,” she will share her tips for successful piecing. However, she states that quilters don’t need absolute perfection: “It’s all about the journey and the joy of creating.”

She will also teach a workshop, “Smoochie,” on Friday, February 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at Atonement’s Fellowship Hall. Attendees at all skill levels will learn how to make a fun Valentine table topper or a Tummy Time play mat for children. The borders of the quilt are made using the leftover trimmings from corner triangles—nothing wasted! Cost for the class is $41 for guild members ($5 more for nonmembers), including the pattern and Walker’s “Golden Rules”. Signups, supply list, and additional information are available from OCQG member Pamela Potter via email at quilterocqg@gmail.com. OCQG is a non-profit organization founded in 1991. Tuesday, the Lady Vikings trailed by only six after the first quarter, 12-6, but fell behind 31-6 at halftime as the Lady Eagles went on a 19-0 run. Harrisburg made it 42-11 after three quarters, and the fourth quarter was played with a running clock. Two of the Lady Vikings’ final five games are at home, including Senior Night Feb. 9 against La Pine. Siuslaw will leave the MVC after this season, and next school year will be in the 3A Far West League with Coquille, Douglas, Glide, South Umpqua and Sutherlin.

The new Far West League is starting to look a lot like the old Far West League for the Siuslaw Vikings football team. Siuslaw appears destined for a football league this fall of Brookings-Harbor,

Coquille, Douglas, South Umpqua and Sutherlin. So, instead of North Bend and Marshfield in the old Far West League, it is Coquille and Sutherlin. Brookings-Harbor replaces Cottage Grove, which was in the original committee recommendations announced earlier in the month. (Siuslaw recently competed in a 3A special district that included Creswell, Elmira, Harrisburg, La Pine, Pleasant Hill and Sisters.) It will not be known as the Far West League for football. It will be 3A-4 Special District 4. And it will be 3A,

not 4A, when the Far West League included Marshfield and North Bend. But it will be a bit of a travel relief for the Vikings, who will avoid an annual trip to either Sisters or La Pine. It’s three hours or so, but it is down the lovely Oregon coast, and not over a couple of mountain ranges to the state’s high desert. Siuslaw will be in a new 3A Far West League of Coquille, Douglas, Glide, South Umpqua and Sutherlin next school year for volleyball, boys and girls basketball and baseball and softball.

Special District 5 (6) — The proposed 40-school 3A includes: Cascade Christian, Klamath

Special District 1 (7 schools) — Banks, Kennedy, North Marion, Rainier, Valley Catholic, Warrenton, Yamhill-Carlton. Special District 2 (8) — Amity, Blanchet Catholic, Dayton, Newport, Santiam Christian, Scio, Taft, Willamina. Special District 3 (8) — Cottage Grove, Creswell, Elmira, Harrisburg, La Pine, Madras, Pleasant Hill, Sisters. Special District 4 (6) — Brookings-Harbor, Coquille, Douglas, Siuslaw, South Umpqua, Sutherlin.

Union, Lakeview, North Valley, Phoenix, St. Mary’s. Special District 6 (5) — Burns, McLoughlin, Nyssa, Umatilla, Vale. Each special district will receives two automatic berths in the 16-team 3A state playoffs, with four teams earning berths via at-large rankings. The OSAA Executive Board meets Feb. 5 to approve the changes.

The Oregon legislature established the Commission in 1977 as an industry-funded agency and is part of the Oregon Department of Agriculture’s Commodity Commission program. The Oregon Dungeness crab fishery is one of the few remaining state-managed fisheries

in the nation. Currently, the Oregon crab fleet has 424 boats. It was in 2009 that, after being petitioned by the 4th grade class of Sunset Primary School in West Linn, Oregon designated the Dungeness crab (cancer magister) as the official state crustacean. Northwest’s seafood heritage and has been harvested commercially since the late 1800’s. Going from ocean to table is a hard-earned journey for the eight legged, two clawed creatures. Newly hatched crabs stay in a larval stage for up to twelve months and must survive not only the ocean currents but predators as they progress through

six successive stages before resembling a miniature crab. It takes roughly four years for male crabs to reach legal harvest size (6 ¼” across the shell back), while female crabs are never harvested as the preferred method to protect the breeding process that is vital to the industry. City Club of Florence meetings are held in the Bromley

Room of the Siuslaw Public Library located at 1460 Ninth Street in Florence and always are open to the public. City Club meetings begin promptly at 1:30 p.m. and the door opens at 12:30 p.m. For more information go to Facebook.com/ CityClubofFlorence.

Class of 2023 achieves second highest graduation rate ever in Oregon STAFF REPORT Country Media, Inc.

Shop. Eat. Support.

The statewide graduation rate for the class of 2023 is 81.3 percent, tying the previous class as the second highest graduation rate ever recorded in Oregon, according to data released today by the Oregon Department of Education (ODE). While the overall rate held steady, some student groups reached all-time highs for graduation including former English Learners (87.6%) and Migrant students (81.6%). “These 37,700 graduates overcame historic challenges to earn their diploma. During their journey to graduation the class of 2023 endured the full, multi-year impact of COVID and its aftermath,” Oregon Department of Education Director Dr. Charlene

Williams said. “Each diploma represents an inspiring step forward for a student, their loved ones, and their community. With impressive grit and resourcefulness, they worked their way through the jarring and isolating impacts of the pandemic to earn their education. We need to maintain high expectations and provide high levels of support that will lead to academic excellence for all of our students. Each and every child from birth through 5th grade must be set up for success in learning to read and reading to learn and be provided opportunities to find their path to graduation success and their dream career.” “I am never satisfied when it comes to our kids. We will continue working hard to improve results in the coming

school years,” Governor Tina Kotek said. “Still, it’s important that we are seeing some positive results in key areas where the state has been targeting resources, such as career and technical education and supporting English Language Learners. This targeted approach to success is working for our students, so let’s do more of that, and I hope lawmakers support summer learning investment in the 2024 session.” Other key findings include: Students completing two credits in an approved Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program of Study significantly exceeded the statewide average, graduating at a rate of 95.0 percent. Former English Learners - students who have successfully completed English

Learner programs prior to entering high school in Oregon - graduated at 87.6 percent, 6 percentage points higher than the statewide average and an all-time high for that student group. Special Education students also saw the highest graduation rate for that student group at 68.6 percent. The graduation rate for students experiencing houselessness increased 2 percentage points to 60.6 percent which is also a record high for that student group. For the first time, graduation rates are reported for military connected students (86.7%), students with experience in incarceration or detention (35.8%) and students recently arrived (63.3%).
