Measure R returning to Del Norte County voters tures and 480 were certified. That left supervisors with no choice but to vote to send the issue back to voters in November. While supervisors voted without comment, Norma Williams, the Del Norte County Employees Association SEIU president, said her union would be fighting against the measure in November. Williams said the SEIU executive board fully supports
Measure R funding. “As of last week, when we met with our local leadership, they have 100 percent told us they are behind all county employees and they will be working with us to defeat these two ballot measures in November,” Williams said. She also challenged other unions representing county employees to publicly fight against

Newsom appoints two Republicans to Fair Board

Voters in Del Norte County will have two chance to vote on whether to support sales tax measures to help fund vital government services. Weeks after the city council in Crescent City agreed to put Measure S back on the ballot after a petition drive collected enough signatures, the Del Norte County
Board of Supervisors voted to do the same with Measure R. Both measures were approved by voters in 2020, although Measure R won by a much slimmer margin. The measure, which raised the sales tax in Del Norte County by 1%, was narrowly approved as 5,018 votes cast ballots in favor of the tax and 4,971 voted against it. Petitions were taken out in an effort to send both measures
back to voters, with supporters saying local residents are already paying too much in taxes and the increased sales tax hurts local businesses as similar businesses in Brookings, Oregon, charge no sales tax. According to Del Norte County Registrar of Voters Allissia Northrup, organizers needed to collect 416 signatures to force another election on Measure R. Supporters turned in 578 signa-

MCL while playing football for Shasta College And Molly says his encouragement helped her through the setback. “Honestly, my brother helped a lot,” she said. “We both had the same mindset.” That determination has paid off for both siblings, with Anthony recovering well and on course to play in Shasta’s season opener
Just in time for the county fair, Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed two new members to the Del Norte County Fair Board. What it most notable about the appointment of Meagan Curtis and Anthony Fabricius is that both are registered Republicans. Kevin Hendrick, the chair of the Del Norte County Democratic Party, said he supports the appointments and it shows Newsom pays attention to local stakeholders and appoints the best people regardless of party. “I was contacted a couple months ago by the governors’ appointment secretary to help find qualified candidates for this board,” Hendrick said. “These two candidates came highly recommended by Fair Director Kim Floyd. I passed these recommendations along to the governors’ appointment secretary with encouragement to move expeditiously with filling the vacant seats on the Fair Board. I am happy to see that these appointments have been made, so the Fair Board can begin to operate with a full contingent.” Both residents of Crescent City, Curtis and Fabricius have long been active in the community. Curtis has been a financial advisor at Edward Jones since 2014, where she was senior branch office administrator from 2011 to 2014. She was an office manager at Alexandre Dairy from 2004 to 2011. Curtis was an executive direc-

Older brother helps Molly Slayton on the path to recovery BY RAY HAMILL For the Triplicate
Molly Slayton had already won the respect of College of the Redwoods volleyball head coach Petra Lorenzi long before she decided to join the program. Slayton, a 2022 Del Norte High graduate, will play for the Corsairs this fall, completing her comeback from a couple of devastating injuries that saw her miss much of her high school
career. The multi-sport standout, who also competed for the Warriors in basketball, softball and golf, suffered torn ACLs in her sophomore and senior years. But the setbacks appear to have made her more determined than ever, and Lorenzi is excited about the addition for a number of reasons. “She’s just a tough kid,” said the CR coach, who is a former Warrior herself and is now in
her sixth year in charge of the Corsairs. “She’s had two knee surgeries and she still wants to play.” Slayton admits the second ACL tear was tough to take, but that the setbacks have made her mentally stronger as she gets ready for the jump to the collegiate level and college life. Her older brother Anthony also suffered a bad knee injury around the same time, tearing his ACL and partially tearing his
